China has become only the third country to discover a new mineral on the moon after its scientists said on Friday that they had found one. At a press conference, Dong Baotong, vice chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority, announced the name of the new mineral as Changesite-(Y). It was found in rock and dust samples retrieved from the moon by China’s Chang’e-5 mission.

The mission was launched in 2020 and was China's first to return a lunar sample. US and Russia are the other two countries to have done so till date. It is the sixth new mineral humans have discovered on the moon.

Wang Xuejun, a party official with China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), informed that a research team from the Beijing Research Institute of Uranium Geology carefully separated a single crystalline particle of the material from more than 140,000 lunar particles using hi-tech processes, including X-ray diffraction.

The particle was about 10 microns in diameter, or about one-tenth of a human hair, Wang told reporters. Changesite-(Y) is a phosphate mineral found in lunar basalts. The Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association has confirmed it as a new mineral.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) recently announced the successful test of a supersonic 'Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator' (IAD). The IAD was indigenously designed by ISRO's lead facility, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre(VSSC), and was realised by the Indian industry. WION spoke to Dr S. Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, VSSC, regarding the significance of this test; what went into the making, and the potential this technology holds.

Traditionally, rocket scientists think of ways and means to have their rockets travel faster and do so more efficiently. However, when it comes to performing interplanetary missions and recovering spent rocket stages(re-usability), it is crucial to slow down a rocket/spacecraft. The rocket stages that are re-entering earth's atmosphere travel at supersonic speeds and spacecraft entering other planets travel at hypersonic speeds.

The commonly used technology to slow down a descending spacecraft/rocket is the firing of a retro-rocket. Simply put, when a rocket is on the ground its engines are fired to lift it off and it functions like a typical rocket. In the case of re-entry, the rocket is travelling at high speeds owing to the energy added by its propulsion system and gravitational pull on its mass.

So, the same engines used for lift-off are fired again to slow it down to a suitable speed for landing. The IAD aims to do something similar without firing rocket engines. It just uses friction or aerodynamic drag.

"IAD is an inflatable structure made of kevlar fabric, coated with Polychloroprene. As the IAD is made of fabric, it can be packed into a small volume of 15litres and can be packed into the nosecone of RH300 rocket (which was used for the test). Once the test rocket reaches an altitude of about 84kilometre, the IAD is deployed and begins to slow down the rocket body(the component known as the payload part) as it undergoes atmospheric re-entry and finally splashes down in the sea" explained Dr Nair.

He added that the inflation of the IAD was carried out by compressed nitrogen gas stored in a gas bottle. Once the IAD falls into the sea, it is deflated by firing a pyro valve to prevent it from floating and thereby causing any harm to sea vehicles.

Notably, this is the first time that an IAD is designed specifically for spent stage recovery. The IAD has huge potential in a variety of space applications like recovery of spent stages of the rocket, landing payloads on Mars or Venus, and making space habitats for human space flight missions.

"This demonstration opens a gateway for cost effective spent stage recovery using the IAD technology. This technology can also be used in ISRO's future missions to Venus and Mars" said Dr S Somanath, Chairman ISRO, and Secretary DOS, who witnessed the successful launch.

Queried about the scalability of the IAD and the possibility of guided landings, Dr Nair said that it can be scaled up to recover even a spent rocket stage.

"It can be used to systematically decelerate a re-entering vehicle by gradually inflating the decelerator. As such, the IAD is not guided. For sea landing precise guidance is not a must. By suitably sizing the IAD, the need for a retro rocket can be avoided for spent stages of vehicle first stage, where energy of spent stage is comparatively less." said Dr Nair before adding that we are yet to do a scaled-up design.

The hunt for alien life has been a strong pursuit for scientists over the years and it looks like Jupiter’s second Galilean Moon – Europa – can hold some significant answers.

According to studies conducted by NASA in the last few years, Europa was found to have an icy crust and an inner system of oceans which can be crucial in supporting life.

The moon has been a subject of study since the 1970s and Alyssa Rhoden, a principal scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado, told The Independent that the ocean water can "somehow moves through the shell and reaches the surface".

"I started researching Europa 22 years ago, and I’ve had the same images to work with the entire time. So, I would say I am EXTREMELY excited for the new data sets that will be delivered by Clipper. As for habitability, there are probably many ways it will inform habitability, but what I am most interested to see is evidence of liquid water within the ice shell," he explained.

As a result, there has been speculation that the moon of Jupiter can actually be a habitable place in the universe. Michael Manga, a geophysicist and professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at UC Berkeley, also supported the theory as he said that Europa is quite similar to Earth.

"Its evolution and dynamics are fascinating, some similarities but also fundamental differences from Earth," he told Universe Today while speaking about the possibility of alien life.

The theories will be further put to test in the near future as NASA will be launching the Europa Clipper in 2024 and the data received can be crucial to expanding on the existing studies.

A lot of theories exist about the early dark days of the universe, but Chinese scientists have found a new way to get a glimpse into that period. The Discovering the Sky at the Longest Wavelengths (DSL) mission, which is also called Hongmeng, will be sending around ten satellites to orbit around the world in order to pick different cosmic signals. The satellites will also block the electromagnetic interference from humans on earth to completely understand the cosmos in a better way.

The mission, led by Chen Xuelei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and his team of researchers, was approved by Chinese Academy of Sciences' New Horizons Program.

This was among a number of projects covering topics like “astronomy, exploration, Earth science, heliophysics and exoplanet missions”, according to media reports.

During the initial days of the earth, there was “faint, stretched out, ultra-long wavelength light emitted by hydrogen atoms” which were created from the Big Bang, according to South China Morning Post. Those signals will be collected by nine out of the ten satellites.

While it is extremely difficult to collect the signals near earth due to ionosphere, the mother satellite will be storing the data from the other satellites while orbiting on the far side of the moon.

“The proposal is an innovative alternative to the much more costly and technically challenging route of setting permanent telescopes on the surface of the lunar far side,” Wu Ji, a senior Chinese space scientist, told the South China Morning Post.

'A giant leap for lambkind': Shaun the Sheep will be ESA, NASA's first 'astronaut' to the Moon

There's a possibility that humans will live on Moon — someday, one day. This is not just science fiction, scientists are actually optimistic as multiple researchers attempt to know how the so-called lunar habitation will happen in reality. Some pits on the Moon have temperatures comfortable for humans, NASA finds

The NASA is now getting ready to send man to the moon, mars and beyond. NASA is ready for the next lunar odyssey, it has concluded its test for its Artemis program rockets.

Moon, Mars & Beyond: NASA to embark upon new lunar odyssey

American aerospace and defence company Lockheed Martin alongside tyre-maker Goodyear is reportedly working on a joint project to develop a new lunar rover that will be used by space astronauts for NASA's Artemis lunar landing program.

NASA is reportedly planning to have a variety of lunar vehicles on its roster. From hauling commercial payloads to carrying human astronauts to isolated regions of the moon on extended trips, NASA is looking for a wide pool of options.

Kirk Shireman, vice president of Lunar Exploration Campaigns at Lockheed Martin stated that, unlike previous rovers that only lasted a few days, the new and much improved jointly-developed rover is being built for extended use and other commercial setups as well.

“We’re developing this new generation of Lunar mobility vehicle to be available to NASA and for commercial companies and even other space agencies to support science and human exploration,” said Shireman.

It is pertinent to note that Goodyear has previously worked with NASA on the famous Apollo missions. The tyre company is expected to use a state-of-the-art airless tyre technology that can be used for rovers as well as passenger vehicles, here on Earth.

Chris Helsel, senior vice president, global operations and chief technology officer at Goodyear was quoted as saying to the media, “Everything we learn from making tires for the moon’s extremely difficult operating environment will help us make better airless tires on Earth."

Lockheed Martin and Goodyear to jointly develop lunar rover for NASA's Artemis mission

Can we form human colonies on Moon and Mars? We do have concept designs ready but travel to space is in itself an extremely expensive enterprise. Space agencies and billionaires like Elon Musk are working in this direction but if a Japanese concept is implemented perfectly, we can possibly hop on to a bullet train and travel to Moon or Mars. After all, it was Japanese who gave the world bullet trains.

Researchers from Japan's Kyoto University and Kajima Construction are planning to make artificial space environment with Earth-like atmosphere in specially made habitable zones on Moon and Mars. They also working on the concept of bullet trains to travel there. For this, the transportation system called 'Hexagon Space Track System' is in the works.

“There is no plan like this in other countries' space development plans. Our plan represents important technologies crucial to ensuring human beings will be able to move to space in the future,” said Yosuke Yamashiki, director of the SIC Human Spaceology Center of Kyoto University in a press conference earlier this month.

“As the idea of living in space becomes more realistic, the problem with the low gravity, which I intuitively became aware of when I was a child, is an issue we must overcome. We are committed to achieving the plan so it will be useful for human beings,” said Takuya Ono, a project associate professor with the Center and a senior researcher at Kajima.

Researchers said that the project is expected to be completed by 2050.

Is it really possible for a country to take over Moon? Or declare Moon as its own territory? NASA accusations suggest so. On Saturday, NASA chief Bill Nelson said in an interview that China could someday land on the moon. He also claimed that Beijing might declare Moon as its own territory. As per Nelson, China will complete the construction of its own Moon station by 2035. The country will then be able to launch several lunar missions. China is planning to land on Moon and the NASA chief admitted that the US space administration has been "very concerned" about the country's agenda to take over the natural satellite. China rejected the accusations In response, China says it has always called for the building of a community of nations in outer space. And rejected the accusations and called NASA's chief claims an irresponsible smear. In recent years, China has stepped up the pace of its space programme, with a focus on Moon exploration. China made its first lunar uncrewed landing in 2013 and expects to launch rockets powerful enough to send astronauts to the moon towards the end of this decade. He added that China has always promoted the building of a shared future for humanity in outer space and opposed its weaponisation and any arms race in space. As far as NASA is concerned, its Artemis programme plans to send a crewed mission to orbit the Moon in 2024. Also planning to make a crewed landing near the lunar south pole by 2025. On the other hand, China is planning uncrewed missions to the Moon's south pole later in this decade. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Is it possible for China to declare Moon as its own territory? Beijing rejects NASA's claims

A mystery rocket has crashed into moon creating two large craters. Scientists are baffled, they don't know where the rocket came from & why the impact was spread over two distinct areas. Palki Sharma reports.

Gravitas: Mysterious rocket crash on moon baffles scientists

Aliens, if they are there somewhere in the outer space have not yet made a contact with us. It may also be that they have and we missed the message.

Just imagine an alien craft coming to Earth and then going back dejected because we were too busy doing other things than to notice them. But what if there are tell-tale signs of such a visit? Not on Earth but on the Moon?

A double-crater formed due to crash of a mystery spacecraft has piqued scientific interest. This crater has been found on the Moon. The eastern crater measures 59 feet (18 metres) across and a western crater measures 52.5 feet (16 metres) across.

Scientists expected a crater to be formed as they knew an unknown piece of space junk crashed into the Moon last year. But here's the thing, no other previous crash of any space junk has formed twin craters like this one.

NASA has said that the double crater was 'unexpected'.

"The double crater was unexpected and may indicate that the rocket body had large masses at each end. Typically a spent rocket has mass concentrated at the motor end; the rest of the rocket stage mainly consists of an empty fuel tank. Since the origin of the rocket body remains uncertain, the double nature of the crater may indicate its identity," NASA has said in its release.

So is there a possibility of a tentacle-y alien brooding on the Moon because his spacecraft crashed? Time will tell.

In the past, the Indian Space Research Organization has astounded the globe by carrying out space missions at astonishingly low rates. Following in this tradition, the ISRO has now set its sights on an expedition to Venus, which will only cost between Rs 5 billion and Rs 10 billion.

The ISRO chooses budget-friendly projects compared to other international space agencies like NASA, which spend enormous sums on space missions. Costing about Rs 3.86 billion, ISRO's Chandrayan-1 was a low-cost spacecraft. While the launch of Chandrayaan-2 cost Rs 3.67 billion, the mission itself cost Rs 6.3 billion.

Following its Moon and Mars expeditions, the ISRO is currently considering a Venus trip. There are reports that the ISRO had been considering a December 2024 launch window for the Venus expedition.

It wouldn't be made public until the Union government gave it its final approval. The ISRO has been working to make sure it will be a distinctive mission.

According to sources, ISRO's "Shukrayaan-I," the expedition to Venus, has been conceptualised. The mission hopes to solve these questions in the coming years when it explores the sun's hottest planet. Several international space agencies have expressed interest in the mission and want to send payloads with "Shukrayaan."

Most likely, "Shukrayaan-I" will be launched on a GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) Mk II, though it may potentially travel on a more potent GSLV Mk III in order to carry additional equipment or fuel.

Several international space agencies have expressed interest in the mission and want to send payloads with "Shukrayaan." Most likely, "Shukrayaan-I" will be launched on a GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) Mk II, though it may potentially travel on a more potent GSLV Mk III in order to carry additional equipment or fuel. Nasa, along with the US department of energy, is working to enhance space nuclear technologies. The space agency has chosen three design concept proposals for a fission surface power system design which may be ready for launch by the end of this decade for a demonstration on the Moon and is going to benefit exploration under the Artemis mission in the future.

Three companies, Lockheed Martin, Westinghouse, and IX (a partnership between Intuitive Machines and X-Energy), will be receiving a contract through DOE's Idaho National Laboratory, each valued at nearly $5 million.

The contracts will finance the development of initial design concepts for a 40-kilowatt class fission power system which is being planned to last for a minimum period of 10 years in the lunar environment.

Fission systems are reliable and relatively small and lightweight in comparison to other power systems. These systems will have the capacity to enable continuous power regardless of location, available sunlight, and other natural environmental conditions, paving the way for long-duration missions on the Moon and even Mars.

NASA to test 3 nuclear fission plant designs on the Moon to power Martian and deep space exploration

Pluto may have been stripped of his status as a planet but the distant icy world, and its satellite Charon are surely objects of study. Pluto is more than 5 billion years away from Earth.

Till recently the best image we had of Pluto was a fuzzy blob reflecting sunlight. It was due to its enormous distance from Earth that we couldn't click clearer picture.

This changed when NASA's New Horizons flew past Pluto and Charon. The interplanetary probe captured never before seen images with unprecedented clarity. Pluto's satellite Charon was seen to have a 'red cap'.

The colour red often represents iron and rust for us. But for worlds like Pluto, so far away from the Sun, iron may not always be the right answer for such a phenomenon.

Now, a group of researchers has put forth their conclusion which may help us know why Charon has that red cap.

The research was published in journals Science and Geophysical Research Letters.

The researchers say that red cap on Charon is likely to be due to chemicals known as tholins. These compounds absorbed a specific colour of ultraviolet rays from the Sun to become red and get deposited around north pole of Charon.
