Odysseus moon landing: Historic mission reaches lunar surface

A spacecraft built and flown by Texas-based company Intuitive Machines landed near the moon's south pole on Thursday, the first U.S. touchdown on the lunar surface in more than half a century and the first ever achieved by the private sector.

Moon landing: US clinches first touchdown in 50 years

Private US spacecraft Odysseus crafted history by landing on the surface of the Moon near the South Pole, days after blasting off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida last Thursday (February 15). This is an astounding success as it is the first time in over 50 years that a US lunar mission has been successful. About over 50 years ago, the US Lunar Module named "Challenger" landed in the Taurus-Littrow region of the Moon on December 11, 1972.

Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus, while providing an update on the moon landing of Odysseus, which is also called “Odie” or IM-1, said, "I know this was a nail-biter, but we are on the surface, and we are transmitting."

"Welcome to the moon," he added. The time of expected landing for the lunar lander was 6:24 pm ET, shortly after which Intuitive Machines provided an update on the landing in a webcast.

Earlier, saying that the lander is "not dead yet," an Intuitive Machines flight controller said, "We have an onboard fault detection system for our communications that after 15 minutes with lack of communication will power cycle the radios and then after that for another 15 minutes it will then switch antenna pairs, so we have some time here to evaluate."

Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus, while providing an update on the moon landing of Odysseus, which is also called “Odie” or IM-1, said, "I know this was a nail-biter, but we are on the surface, and we are transmitting." "Welcome to the moon," he added. The time of expected landing for the lunar lander was 6:24 pm ET, shortly after which Intuitive Machines provided an update on the landing in a webcast.
The moon has been a thing of fascination for humanity for thousands of years. It's not exactly easy to ignore the brightest object in the night sky. As human ideas and later scientific understanding evolved, there were theories about the exact origin of the Moon. Some of them say that the Moon formed from Earth when it collided with another planet millions of years ago. Other theories suggest that the Moon was an independent celestial body which was later drawn into Earth's gravitational field and became its satellite. Now Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is hoping to have some clues.

JAXA's Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) lander is on the lunar surface right now and carrying out important scientific observations. The Associated Press (AP) quoted JAXA's Shinichiro Sakai who said that SLIM has been using its multi-band spectral camera to study the composition of rocks on the lunar surface.

Japan became the fifth nation to land on the lunar surface with a precision landing of SLIM on January 22. The mission experienced last minute hiccup as the lander landed the wrong side up due to a last-minute failure. After the initial period during which the lander was not generating power, it finally did and began functioning.

A secret moon might be the reason behind the mysterious rings around a space rock.

According to the research published in The Planetary Science Journal, scientists have found that a tiny, unseen moonlet might be shepherding a pair of gossamer rings around Chariklo, a minor planet orbiting the Sun in the space between Jupiter and Neptune.

Chariklo is 250 kilometres (155 miles) in diameter and is the only known centaur with rings. It has not one, but two rings. However, researchers are still figuring out how asteroids maintain rings.

Scientists have found that moonlets might be the plausible explanation behind the rings. Amanda Sickafoose of the Planetary Science Institute told Science Alert, "Rings around minor planets have only been recently discovered, and only a small number of such systems are currently known."

She added, "There has been significant research into the dazzling rings around the giant planets; however, the mechanisms of ring formation and evolution around small objects are not well understood. We've shown that one of the possibilities for thin rings to exist around small bodies is that a small satellite is sculpting them."

Chariklo has two rings that are very close to a distance to it, known as the Roche limit. Another factor favouring the moonlet theory is that a small moon can keep the ring perturbed enough to stay.

"Planetary rings will naturally spread or disperse over time. Chariklo exhibits two thin rings, a few kilometres in width. In order for the rings to stay this thin, there needs to be a mechanism to confine the material and prevent it from dispersing," Sickafoose said.

However, Chariklo is tiny and far away. Thus, scientists cannot gather more information about Chariklo until and unless they send out a mission to get a bit closer. There might be some indirect way of figuring out whether or not there's a moonlet orbiting the asteroid-like chunk of rock and maintaining its rings.

"We show this in the paper by simulating a Chariklo-like ring system that does not have a satellite, and we find that the width of the rings increases linearly with time. It is unlike the situation when there is a satellite in resonance with the ring material, which acts to confine the rings into the kilometre-sized widths that are observed," Sickafoose mentioned.

The researchers are still finding the composition of these rings. There's a high probability that ice accounts for quite a substantial proportion. However, it's unclear how massive the particles are or how they interact.

Here is why NASA wants to put nuclear reactor on Moon and ditch solar energy

New NASA-funded research has uncovered a surprising reality behind the serene facade of the moon. It turns out that the beautiful celestial object in our night skies is not as calm as it seems! Research suggests that it may actually be hiding some turbulence right at its core, that is causing it to shrink.

Wrinkles on the moon

As per The Guardian, as the moon's core cools down, it is actually shrinking. This is causing its surface to shrivel and form what scientists call thrust faults—basically, giant ripples across its surface.

These thrust faults aren't just harmless wrinkles; they can actually lead to moonquakes and landslides that last for hours.

Also read | Aliens made the 'meteor' that hit Earth 10 years ago, scientist claims

In the new research published in the Planetary Science Journal, lead researcher Tom Watters from the Smithsonian Institution explains: "Our modelling suggests that shallow moonquakes capable of producing strong ground shaking in the south polar region are possible from slip events on existing faults or the formation of new thrust faults," he said.

The researchers took a close look at the moon's South Pole, an area believed to have places with water ice hidden in the shadows. This region is super important and is set to be explored by NASA's Artemis III mission in 2026.

Using cameras aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, researchers spotted lots of "relatively small, young thrust faults widely distributed in the lunar crust, and seismic devices left on the moon's surface by astronauts decades ago".

They compared these findings with seismic data and found that they matched.

Why is this significant?

You may be asking why does this even matter. Well, it is not great news for astronauts or robots exploring the moon. These can actually be very dangerous as humans continue to explore Earth's natural satellite.

In a statement published by NASA, Watters said that "The global distribution of young thrust faults, their potential to be active, and the potential to form new thrust faults from ongoing global contraction should be considered when planning the location and stability of permanent outposts on the Moon".

In a statement published by NASA, Watters said that "The global distribution of young thrust faults, their potential to be active, and the potential to form new thrust faults from ongoing global contraction should be considered when planning the location and stability of permanent outposts on the Moon". He said taht he just wants to warn future astronauts that the moon is more dynamic than it looks. "The moon is not this benign place where nothing is happening," he remarked. Moon's serene facade is hiding a turbulent reality, reveals NASA-funded research

The United States is gearing up for its next lunar mission set to launch on February 14, on Valentine's Day. This comes just weeks after a private American moon lander, Peregrine, burned up in the Earth's atmosphere upon its return. The objective of the next lunar mission is to achieve the first landing of a US-built lunar lander on the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.

This upcoming endeavour will involve a collaboration between Houston-based Intuitive Machines and SpaceX. The Intuitive Machines' lander, named Nova-C, will be mounted atop a SpaceX rocket. In contrast, Peregrine Mission One had a lander built by Astrobotic Technology and was on the Vulcan Centaur rocket, by United Launch Alliance (ULA).

If successful, it will also mark the first such feat by a private company. The mission is scheduled for a 12:57 am blast off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida by SpaceX. Nova-C lander moon touchdown is anticipated to be on February 22.

Nova-C is expected to land on an impact crater close to the lunar south pole.

Space marvel! NASA's incredible shot of Moon, Earth in one frame leaves internet awestruck

NASA, in a sheer delight for space enthusiasts, shared a striking close-up image of Jupiter's moon Io, courtesy of the Juno spacecraft. NASA, while sharing the image wrote in its caption, "On Saturday, Feb. 3, our @NASASolarSystem Juno spacecraft made its final close flyby of Jupiter's moon Io. Similar to the previous flyby on Dec. 30, 2023, this second pass was at a distance of about 930 miles (1,500 kilometres) - or the distance from New York to Orlando, Florida."

Jupiter's moon Io is one of the four largest moons of the planet, known as the Galilean moons. It was discovered by the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei in 1610. lo is the innermost of these four moons and is the fourth largest moon in the solar system. NASA, while sharing the image wrote in its caption, "On Saturday, Feb. 3, our @NASASolarSystem Juno spacecraft made its final close flyby of Jupiter's moon Io. Similar to the previous flyby on Dec. 30, 2023, this second pass was at a distance of about 930 miles (1,500 kilometres) - or the distance from New York to Orlando, Florida." Jupiter's moon Io is one of the four largest moons of the planet, known as the Galilean moons. It was discovered by the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei in 1610. lo is the innermost of these four moons and is the fourth largest moon in the solar system. A new study led by NASA scientists has revealed that the Moon is shrinking in size. It has shrunk over 150 feet in its circumference over the past few hundred million years. Molly Gambhir reports.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has successfully re-established communication with its Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM), bringing an end to a week of silence.

Japan's 'SLIM' lander resumes exploration of the moon's surface

Japanese moon lander 'SLIM' comes back to life and resumes mission

Japan Aerospace Exploration Company (JAXA) has unveiled the first image of its lunar lander on the moon's surface, which showed that the lander had an unusual upside-down landing. The spacecraft encountered a setback with an "abnormality in the main engine" when it was merely 50 metres above the lunar surface. Subsequently, an unexpected change in landing orientation occurred, JAXA said in an update on Thursday (Jan 25).

Japan's Moon landing still a distinct achievement

Despite the anomaly affecting the spacecraft's ability to charge its solar panels due to misalignment with the sun, Japan has become the fifth nation to successfully execute a soft landing on the moon.

The onboard software of the SLIM (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) mission continued to autonomously guide the descent autonomously, resulting in a landing speed below the design range at around 1.4 metres per second.

Japan's successful Moon landing was 'upside down', quite literally

European Space Agency (ESA) in an interesting feed on its social media handle on Tuesday (Jan 23) spoke about recreating the Moon's surface on Earth!

ESA made it official back in December, pledging to roll out not one, but two cutting-edge facilities to simulate lunar vibes and pave the way for groundbreaking exploration technology.

The anticipation is sky-high as these futuristic spaces, set to debut in 2024, promise to catapult us into a world where the Moon's mysteries become as familiar as our own backyard.

ESA experts, teaming up from the UK and Germany, spilled the beans on their secret ingredient - terrestrial rock samples sourced from a Greenland mine, mirroring the very essence of lunar materials.

''To do this, we needed rock samples with similar properties to materials found on the Moon. Some of our experts from the LUNA and VULCAN facilities recently travelled to Greenland, to start a collaboration with a mine that will provide us with anorthosite, an igneous, light-coloured rock that has similar properties to material found on the Moon,'' the video caption read.

Why ESA is recreating Moon here?

ESA's moon-duplication mission isn't just about creating a cosmic spectacle. It's a launchpad for training future astronauts in an immersive lunar environment, mirroring every inch of the lunar surface's activities.

''They will also be used to develop new technologies, including those that use local lunar materials to generate oxygen, water, and building materials, for instance,'' ESA added.

Also Read | Stellar show! NASA is set to delay its next few missions to the Moon as technical hurdles mount with the various spacecraft it intends to use to get there. Watch this video for all details.

Why is NASA pushing back Moon mission timelines?

A privately built moon lander launched Monday morning to make the first U.S. soft lunar landing in more than 50 years failed to enter its correct orientation in space, suffering what its owners termed an "anomaly" that calls the mission's fate into question.

US: First Lunar mission in 50 years faces technical difficulties

Almost three hours post-landing, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) "switched off" the Moon lander and revealed that "a lot of data has been obtained" during the descent and lunar surface exploration.

"We were able to complete the transmission of technical and image data acquired during the descent and on the lunar surface before the power was switched off... a lot of data has been obtained," the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said.

This comes after a historic achievement when Japan's 'Moon Sniper' craft, also known as the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM), successfully executed a "soft landing" on the lunar surface on Friday (Jan 19).

This accomplishment solidified Japan as the fifth nation globally to achieve a lunar landing, joining the ranks of the United States, Russia, China, and India.

Additionally, the country's space agency said that there still exists a chance of restoring the lander.

"According to the telemetry data, SLIM's solar cells are facing west. So if sunlight hits the Moon from the west in the future, we believe there's a possibility of power generation, and we're currently preparing for restoration," said the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Japan's 'Moon Sniper' successfully lands on lunar surface, but solar cells not generating power

This may sound very romantic had the entire affair not involved cutting edge science jargon. But the development is notable indeed.
Right now, NASA has an orbiter revolving around the Moon while the ISRO has an orbiter as well as a lander on the surface of the Moon. The 'Vikram' lander had a successful soft landing near Moon's south pole, putting India in the elite club of a handful of countries.
