Match 33 of IPL 2022 saw a thrilling clash between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday evening (April 21). Opting to bowl first, Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK restricted MI to 155-7, who rode on Tilak Verma's 55* after early strikes from Mukesh Choudhary.

In reply, CSK were 88 for 3 and remained in the hunt courtesy Robin Uthappa's 25-ball 30 and Ambati Rayudu's stay in the middle (who departed for a 35-ball 40). However, CSK were soon reduced to 106-6, courtesy Daniel Sams' 4 for 30, as the onus fell on Dwaine Pretorius and MS Dhoni in the final overs. The South African played a crucial 14-ball 22 before former Chennai captain Dhoni finished off proceedings with an unbeaten 28 off 13 balls to take CSK home on the final ball of the contest.

Can we request MS Dhoni to come out of retirement for T20 WC, says ex-India pacer after CSK beat MI

Mumbai Indians (MI) versus Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been referred to as the El Clasico of IPL since time immemorial. Match 33 of the IPL 2022 edition saw a winless MI take on defending champions and four-time winners CSK, just a position above bottom-ranked Mumbai, in a thrilling encounter before the Yellow Army fought till the very last ball to emerge on top courtesy MS Dhoni's masterclass finish.

Opting to bowl first, Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK had a dream start at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday evening (April 21). Mukesh Choudhary's 3 for 19 rocked MI's top-order as they were soon reduced to 23-3 and 47-4 in no time. Rohit achieved an unwanted record with most ducks in IPL after a two-ball dismissal. The likes of Ishan Kishan, and Dewald Brevis couldn't do much as Suryakumar Yadav fell for a good-looking 32.

While wickets tumbled left, right and centre, CSK's fielding weren't upto the mark as the likes of Dhoni missed a stumping whereas captain Jadeja missed a few sitters. Eventually, Tilak Verma's 51 not out and handy cameos from Kieron Pollard-Jaydev Unadkat propelled MI to 155-7 in 20 overs. Along with Mukesh, Dwayne Bravo also chipped in with two key wickets.

In reply, CSK lost Ruturaj Gaikwad on the first ball of the run-chase. Daniel Sams struck at regular intervals to unsettle Chennai.
Dhoni looked in decent touch before the last over. However, he upped his game effortlessly in the last over against one of his favourite bowlers, Jaydev Unadkat. Dhoni went deep into the crease, anticipated the slower ones and bouncers to smash 6, 4, 2, 4 and take CSK past the finish line on the final delivery. The former Chennai captain remained unbeaten on 28 (13)* as the defending champions attained two crucial points.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have their task cut out in a bid to stay alive in the playoffs race in IPL 2022 edition. The Ravindra Jadeja-led Yellow Army have not hit the ground running so far in the 15th season of the IPL, with only one win from six games. The defending champions and four-time winners CSK got off the mark with a win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) -- in what was their fifth encounter -- and were on top versus Gujarat Titans (GT), in defence of a competitive 171, before David Miller-Rashid Khan's blitz took Gujarat past the finish line. While Chennai's batting has been expressive, their bowling has continued to let them down in crunch situations. Given they are facing arch-rivals and five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI), who are the only team yet to get off the mark in IPL 2022, CSK will churn out their best XI to get the better of Mumbai on Thursday evening (April 21). Predicting CSK's XI versus MI With Ruturaj Gaikwad finally getting some runs under his belt in the game versus Gujarat, Robin Uthappa and he will continue to don the opening slots. Moeen Ali will follow suit at No. 3 with Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni, skipper Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo to form the middle and lower order. Chris Jordan was highly-expensive versus Gujarat, returning with 3.5-0-58-0, and looks set to make way for South African all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius -- who should never have been dropped in the first place as per many experts. Mukesh Choudhary and Maheesh Theekshana will continue to hold onto their respective spots and hope to strike with a few wickets in the powerplay overs, the nemesis of CSK this season. CSK's predicted XI vs MI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja (c), Dwayne Bravo, Dwaine Pretorius, Mukesh Choudhary, Mahesh Theekshana

IPL 2020: Mumbai Indians hand heaviest defeat to Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has heaped praise on the experienced players in his side after they toppled defending champions Mumbai Indians in the opening match of the Indian Premier League.

South African veteran Faf du Plessis smashed an unbeaten 58 to guide Chennai to a five-wicket win, chasing Mumbai's 162 in Abu Dhabi as glitzy Twenty20 tournament started months late because of the coronavirus pandemic.

'Indian Paunch League': Stars pilloried for 'healthy waistlines' in IPL opener

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has confirmed that their star all-rounder Dwayne Bravo will miss another couple of matches of the 13th IPL.

Despite missing the seasoned West Indian who is recovering from an injury, three-times winners CSK began their campaign on a positive note, beating arch-rivals Mumbai Indians by five wickets here on Saturday.

"Dwayne Bravo is out for a couple of games," Fleming said in the post-match press conference.
Bravo picked a niggle during the recently-concluded Caribbean Premier League and didn't bowl in the final due to a knee injury.

Playing in place of Bravo, English all-rounder Sam Curran smashed 18 off six balls to help CSK cross the finish line after Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis' scored brisk half-centuries.

In his quota of four overs, Curran returned impressive figures of 1/28 while picking up the wicket of the dangerous looking Quinton de Kock, and then played a cameo with the bat.

"Curran's performance was terrific," Fleming said.

The head coach also heaped praise on Rayudu, who played a match-winning knock, making a 48-ball 71 and along with du Plessis, who scored an unbeaten 58, helped Chennai chase down a target of 163 with four balls to spare.

"Rayudu has been nothing short of fantastic. He has been pretty emotional and played a great knock," Fleming said.

The former New Zealand captain further said that the pitch was "difficult" to score and that the team is looking for ways to find the right balance.

While addressing his team's post-match press conference, Mumbai Indians pacer James Pattinson said that they were looking to bowl first.

"We were looking to bowl first, with the temperature being high at night time the ground does get a bit wet. So, there is an advantage in bowling first. Both the teams were looking to bowl first," Pattinson said.

"There's little bit of wetness around the grass. It skidded on a little bit. It was a good wicket overall," the Australian added.

Speaking about Kieron Pollard's batting position, Pattinson said that he expects the West Indian to bat higher up in the order in the future.

Pollard batted at number six against CSK.

"I think between him (Pollard) and the two Pandya brothers, it's just going to float at number 5, 6 and 7 depending on the situation of the game. I'm sure he'll bat higher at some stage, depending on the situation in the game," said Pattinson.

The bowler also talked about the absence of crowd in the IPL.

"You just have to make your own noise out there. It's obviously hard when you don't have fans cheering behind you, especially the Mumbai Indians fans who are great.

What makes Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings rivalry in IPL special? Sachin Tendulkar gives his take

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to face defending champions Mumbai Indians at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. CSK vs MI is arguably the biggest match of IPL given it is also considered as ‘El Clasico’ of cricket and the match promises to be an instant blockbuster considering the star-studded line-ups both the teams boast.

MI defeated CSK in the final of IPL 2019 by just one run and that heart-crushing defeat will somewhere be in the CSK players.

The pitch of the Sheikh Zayed Stadium generally stays on the slower side but given this is the first match of IPL 2020, the track would be fresh and plenty of runs are expected in the season opener.

All eyes will be on MS Dhoni as ‘Thala’ is set to mark his return to the cricket field after playing his last match in the ICC World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand. Dhoni has led CSK to three IPL titles and remains one of the best captain of all-time in cricketing history.
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming, ahead of the match against Mumbai Indians, heaped praise on Dhoni as he said: “It has been no different. He’s very fit and mentally he’s been very engaged and determined. In some ways the break can work for the experienced and older players that we have. MS is fresh and ready to go,” Fleming told CSK’s official website.

Also termed as ‘El Clasico’ cricket, CSK vs MI will be the perfect season opener for IPL 2020. Talking about the match, Fleming said, the encounter always adds extra excitement and pressure.

“The first game is always full of anxiety, nerves and excitement, and CSK-MI has added extra excitement and pressure and we enjoy that. We’ve earned the right to play the first game by playing well last year, and given the way the final finished last year, it’s nice to have another crack at MI. They are a very good side and it gives you a good gauge as to how the pre-season has gone and the areas that need improvement. You get a good idea after the first game as to where your team is sitting,” Fleming said.

CSK will be without the likes of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh who opted out of IPL 2020 citing personal reasons.
