<p>Season three of hit Hulu series 'Only Murders in the Building' is already looking exciting thanks to the star cast. The show's principal cast included Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short. And now veteran star Meryl Streep along with Paul Rudd has joined the cast of the show, which is currently filming its third season.&nbsp;<br />

Gomez who also serves as the executive producer of the show shared the news on Instagram as she shared a group selfie with her co-actors. She also posted a video with her co-stars from the sets where Streep makes an appearance at the end, right behind the lead trio.<br />
<br />
'Only Murders in the Building' started on Hulu in August 2021 and instantly became a hit. Its second season premiered in July 2022.</p>

Michigan state scientist Dr Randall Mindy(DiCaprio) &nbsp;and PhD student Kate Dibiasky (Law) are suitably excited one night when they discover a comet. Their excitement in hours turns into fear as they realise the comet is coming straight at Earth which can lead to complete destruction of mankind.&nbsp;<br />

With the help of the NASA chief, they manage to get an appointment with the President of the United States Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep), who after making them wait for a day, finally is willing to devote 20 minutes of her time to the concerned scientist. The world is sold by his idea even as Mindy and Dibiaski roll their eyes and cry hoarse that the idea still not going to help the world from extinction. At one point as the tech guru explains the billions of dollars that can be earned out of extracting the minerals, Dr Mindy exasperatedly says "what's the use of so much if we are all going to die?" He is of course thrown out soon after making such a comment.&nbsp;<br />

McKay takes references from the current scenario, where everything turns into a hashtag and the obsession to opinionate on social media and turns it upside down. All his characters have exaggerated reactions to the mayhem that is about to descend on earth. There is a midterm poll, that the President cannot afford to lose, and hence wants to go with whatever the main financier, the tech guru billionaire is pelting, the working class to wants to agree as they are interested in the jobs that the comet&nbsp;and extraction of minerals would bring in, then there is a very public break up and makeup of two pop stars going on amid this mayhem. Everyone has an opinion about it, and groups have been divided- some side the government and are being short-sighted while others (only a handful) believe that Dibiasky is correct.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
As time inches towards impending doom, no one really addresses the issue at hand and instead is propagating separate agendas. The film, made by McKay, is slightly presumptuous much like other Hollywood disaster films have been. It becomes a white people's problem which the world eventually catches on to and fights for (Bollywood actor Ishaan Khatter too makes a fleeting appearance as an online activist). The shortsightedness of Mckay is not just limited to him but time and again, Hollywood has made films on impending doom that may affect the world over and every time it has been the Americans who have risen up to the occasion to salvage the situation.&nbsp;<br />

However, McKay wins because he takes a wry take on the current scenario and makes a hilariously mockery of how systems run. So Streep characters are a mix of several terrible, incompetent world leaders rolled into one. The news anchors are keener to keep the news 'light' instead of asking pertinent questions. The head of the chief is keen to make quick bucks selling snacks from the White House pantry.&nbsp;</p>

Streep's President Orlean is insensitive, shortsighted and basically a terrible leader who has no idea what has hit her. Streep, the immensely talented actor, owes her part and is ably supported by actor Jonah Hill. The other actor who stands out is Mark Rylance as the weird tech billionaire who hates eye contact and can predict your death based on algorithms. Rylance's character is so bizarre and yet you can't stop watching him when he is there on the screen. The actor may just earn an Oscar nomination in the supporting role category for this film.&nbsp;<br />

McKay in fact has some of the best Hollywood actors in his film- each playing walk away from parts. There is Cate Blanchett as the popular TV show host who has eyes for the hot doctor Mindy. There is Timothy Chalamet playing Dibiasky's sympathiser in hopes to get laid. Ariana Grande makes her acting debut as a millennial popstar going through a break-up in public- which most are eager to lap up more than news on a killer comet.&nbsp;<br />

At 2 hours 40 minutes, the film is a bit of stretch but you will find yourself relating to the film. The pandemic has taken over our lives in the last two years and nearly no one has a coherent idea on how to tackle it. <p>To whom would you turn if you learned a comet was on a collision course with Earth and decisive action was required to prevent the extinction of all life on this planet? If your first thought was Meryl Streep, you have made both an excellent and terrible choice.</p>

<p>In “Don’t Look Up,” from writer-director Adam McKay (“The Big Short,” “Vice”), two scientists played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence find themselves facing this end-of-the-world scenario and must turn to a U.S. government led by the fictional President Orlean for assistance.</p>

<p>The good news (for the movie, which will reach theaters on Dec. 10 and Netflix on Dec. 24) is that Orlean is played by Streep, the venerated film and TV star; the bad news (for humanity) is that Orlean is a self-centered scoundrel who cares a great deal about her public image but little to nothing about running the country.</p>

<p>Orlean is one of several malefactors in “Don’t Look Up,” a social satire that McKay wrote about climate change but that he fully expects will be interpreted as a commentary on the pandemic. The president is also a character whose many faults and shortcomings Streep delighted in bringing to life, and she credits McKay for giving her and her co-stars the latitude to indulge in awfulness.</p>

<p>As Streep explained in a recent phone interview, “He never lost heart or confidence in this vision that he had for this thing, which was to make an atmosphere as free as possible for everybody — just go nuts and do what you want. But with a deadly serious intent.”</p>

<p>Here, Streep and McKay explained the steps they followed to put Orlean in the Oval Office.</p>

<p><strong>Create a Backstory</strong></p>

<p>Based on what she had read in McKay’s screenplay, Streep said she was already envisioning how Orlean could have won office. “You could imagine a group of various miscreants was pulled together, and she was the least bad of a lot of other candidates that they could have put out there,” Streep said, adding that she thought of Orlean “as someone whose elderly husband had a lot of money, and she got rid of him, and it was in California, so she got half. She had no real agenda except to have and retain power, and when she got there, she just realized that the job was pretty easy.”</p>

<p>McKay said that in naming the character, he was thinking of New Orleans — “It’s a fun city, but it’s kind of in jeopardy” — and not the fact that Streep played author Susan Orlean in “Adaptation.” (The notion that he manifested Streep in the role by naming it for her, McKay said, is “definitely not the case.”)</p>

<p><strong>Draw on Real-Life Inspiration</strong></p>

<p>McKay said he thought of Orlean as “a goulash” of recent presidents. That meant “the self-serving con man aspects of the last president, the dangerous inexperience of George W. Bush, the slick polish of Bill Clinton, the celebrity of Barack Obama and the coziness with big money,” McKay said. Another inspiration was finance expert Suze Orman, whom McKay described as “a brash populist with a strong fashion statement.”</p>

<p>To that recipe, Streep said she added a dash of the “Real Housewives,” whose televised squabbles often play in her house when her daughters come to visit. Although Streep won an Oscar for playing Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady,” she said that performance was instructive only up to a point. Thatcher, she said, “wielded a kind of femininity that was intimidating to men, and part of her power was how she could pull it together — it was very specific to the ladder she climbed there.” Orlean, she said, is “more of our time — algorithmically put together.”<br />
&lt;b&gt;Look the Part&lt;/b&gt;</p>

<p>Streep had a hand in devising Orlean’s fashion sensibility, which she said communicated something essential about the character: “So what if she’s 70 years old and dresses like she’s 35?” she said. “No one told her you can’t be 35 forever.” That meant attire modeled after TV news anchors who, Streep said, “tend to pick these broad swaths of bright, happy colors to put on themselves — no prints, no polka dots or plaids or, God forbid, florals. None of the things that other people wear. Just these power suits and pencil skirts.” It also called for a specific hair regimen: “When I was in high school, you’d set your hair in rollers, then take it out and brush it 100 times,” Streep said. “This is the kind of hair where you take it out of rollers and just leave it like that — the longer, the better. And then those are sprayed and crisped and the ends curl out in weird ways. And that’s a thing. It has always escaped me why this was good. So I thought, well, I’m going to try to that — God knows I won’t do it in my real life.”</p>

<p><strong>Get Ready to Face the Crowds</strong></p>

<p>All that advance planning may still not fully prepare you for the demands of the presidency, as Streep discovered on her first day of shooting. She had spent several weeks in isolation, as screen actors have been required to do during the pandemic. Then, on the appointed day, she said, “I bundled up in my big down coat, put the dog in the back of my car, drove through a snowstorm to Worcester, Massachusetts, and got out at a stadium and parked.” Once there, Streep said, “They tried to turn me away at several points to get into the set. I said no, I’m in it.” After getting into hair, makeup and costume, Streep took to the stage where she saw her face on a Jumbotron and heard the delayed echo of her voice as she spoke to a crowd of several hundred extras. “And I just lost it,” she said. “I thought, well, I clearly have to retire. I can’t do this. I actually can’t do this. It was really a crisis of confidence.” Needless to say, Streep did find her bearings, but, she said, “it took awhile.”</p>

For one, the experience of waging a campaign, she said, is likely more than she could bear: “The cost, since the rise of social media, is so high that you have to be a nun to be elected,” she said. “Anybody in your family who was in trouble or in jail or anything, your family is offered up on the altar for sacrifice. I can’t even imagine what that’s like.”</p>

<p>Acting, said Streep, “is the only thing I can do. I could act like a politician, but I wouldn’t be good at it. I acted like I could play the violin, but I can’t really play the violin.”</p>

In “Don’t Look Up,” from writer-director Adam McKay (“The Big Short,” “Vice”), two scientists played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence find themselves facing this end-of-the-world scenario and must turn to a U.S. government led by the fictional President Orlean for assistance. The good news (for the movie, which will reach theaters on Dec. 10 and Netflix on Dec. 24) is that Orlean is played by Streep, the venerated film and TV star; the bad news (for humanity) is that Orlean is a self-centered scoundrel who cares a great deal about her public image but little to nothing about running the country. Orlean is one of several malefactors in “Don’t Look Up,” a social satire that McKay wrote about climate change but that he fully expects will be interpreted as a commentary on the pandemic. The president is also a character whose many faults and shortcomings Streep delighted in bringing to life, and she credits McKay for giving her and her co-stars the latitude to indulge in awfulness. As Streep explained in a recent phone interview, “He never lost heart or confidence in this vision that he had for this thing, which was to make an atmosphere as free as possible for everybody — just go nuts and do what you want. But with a deadly serious intent.” Here, Streep and McKay explained the steps they followed to put Orlean in the Oval Office. Create a Backstory Based on what she had read in McKay’s screenplay, Streep said she was already envisioning how Orlean could have won office. “You could imagine a group of various miscreants was pulled together, and she was the least bad of a lot of other candidates that they could have put out there,” Streep said, adding that she thought of Orlean “as someone whose elderly husband had a lot of money, and she got rid of him, and it was in California, so she got half. She had no real agenda except to have and retain power, and when she got there, she just realized that the job was pretty easy.” McKay said that in naming the character, he was thinking of New Orleans — “It’s a fun city, but it’s kind of in jeopardy” — and not the fact that Streep played author Susan Orlean in “Adaptation.” (The notion that he manifested Streep in the role by naming it for her, McKay said, is “definitely not the case.”) Draw on Real-Life Inspiration McKay said he thought of Orlean as “a goulash” of recent presidents. That meant “the self-serving con man aspects of the last president, the dangerous inexperience of George W. Bush, the slick polish of Bill Clinton, the celebrity of Barack Obama and the coziness with big money,” McKay said. Another inspiration was finance expert Suze Orman, whom McKay described as “a brash populist with a strong fashion statement.” To that recipe, Streep said she added a dash of the “Real Housewives,” whose televised squabbles often play in her house when her daughters come to visit. Although Streep won an Oscar for playing Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady,” she said that performance was instructive only up to a point. Thatcher, she said, “wielded a kind of femininity that was intimidating to men, and part of her power was how she could pull it together — it was very specific to the ladder she climbed there.” Orlean, she said, is “more of our time — algorithmically put together.” <b>Look the Part</b> Streep had a hand in devising Orlean’s fashion sensibility, which she said communicated something essential about the character: “So what if she’s 70 years old and dresses like she’s 35?” she said. “No one told her you can’t be 35 forever.” That meant attire modeled after TV news anchors who, Streep said, “tend to pick these broad swaths of bright, happy colors to put on themselves — no prints, no polka dots or plaids or, God forbid, florals. None of the things that other people wear. Just these power suits and pencil skirts.” It also called for a specific hair regimen: “When I was in high school, you’d set your hair in rollers, then take it out and brush it 100 times,” Streep said. “This is the kind of hair where you take it out of rollers and just leave it like that — the longer, the better. And then those are sprayed and crisped and the ends curl out in weird ways. And that’s a thing. It has always escaped me why this was good. So I thought, well, I’m going to try to that — God knows I won’t do it in my real life.” Get Ready to Face the Crowds All that advance planning may still not fully prepare you for the demands of the presidency, as Streep discovered on her first day of shooting. She had spent several weeks in isolation, as screen actors have been required to do during the pandemic. Then, on the appointed day, she said, “I bundled up in my big down coat, put the dog in the back of my car, drove through a snowstorm to Worcester, Massachusetts, and got out at a stadium and parked.” Once there, Streep said, “They tried to turn me away at several points to get into the set. I said no, I’m in it.” After getting into hair, makeup and costume, Streep took to the stage where she saw her face on a Jumbotron and heard the delayed echo of her voice as she spoke to a crowd of several hundred extras. “And I just lost it,” she said. “I thought, well, I clearly have to retire. I can’t do this. I actually can’t do this. <p>The American actress plays a cheated widow out to right financial chicanery in "Laundromat", a deft satire on the maze of shell companies that criminals and the super-rich use to hide their billions.</p>

<p>"This movie is fun and it's funny, but it's really important," Streep told reporters at the Venice film festival.</p>

<p>Director Steven Soderbergh shows how the massive 2016 leak of documents from the Panama law firm Mossack &amp; Fonseca exposed the lengths the rich and powerful go to avoid paying tax -- mostly legally.</p>

<p>It sent shock waves across the world when the off-shore dealings of leaders in a string of countries were exposed, leading to the resignation of the Icelandic prime minister Sigmundur Davio Gunnlaugsson.</p>

<p>But rather than casting the firm's partners as shady baddies, Soderbergh lets the pair -- played by British actor Gary Oldman and Spanish star Antonio Banderas -- dig their own graves by telling it from their point of view.</p>

<p>"This is a funny way to tell a black-hearted joke, a joke that's been played on all of us," Streep told reporters in Venice.</p>

<p><strong>'It's a crime'&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>"But it's a crime not without victims, and many of them are journalists. The reason the Panama Papers were exported out to the world was the work of journalists.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"People died because of this," Streep said, referring to the Maltese columnist Daphne Anne Caruana Galizia, who was killed in a bomb attack in 2017 after taking part in the Panama Papers investigation.</p>

<p>Soderbergh, the maker of classics such as "Sex, Lies and Videotape", "Traffic", "Erin Brockovich" and the "Ocean's" trilogy, said he hoped the Netflix film would increase pressure for real change.</p>

<p>"Along with climate change, this kind of corruption is the defining issue of this moment. In 2000 the top 1 percent controlled a third of the world's wealth. They now control half.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"That does not seem sustainable and yet here we are. Transparency is the only solution," he added.</p>

<p>In the film Soderbergh admits that five companies he has been involved with have been registered in the low-tax US state of Delaware, where more than quarter of a million shell companies are registered to a single address.</p>

<p>The director hailed the new Unexplained Wealth Order in Britain which targets "people with extreme wealth which seems to have come from nowhere".</p>

<p>However, Gerard Ryle, head of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which led the year-long secret inquiry by a global network of 400 journalists into the Panama Papers cache, said the US and Britain were now among the two worst offshore offenders, "crusading against it internationally but sweeping up the benefits themselves".&nbsp;</p>

<p>While he welcomed the spotlight being turned back on the issue, Ryle told AFP that it "was a pity" it had somewhat overlooked the patient and dangerous work done by investigative reporters.</p>

<p>Jake Bernstein, who wrote "Secrecy World", an account of the ICIJ investigation on which the film is based, said America is now "one of the biggest tax havens in the world, and there is a lot of vested interests in keeping the system exactly how it is.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Delaware is a factory for anonymous shell companies, and making a billion dollars a year from that business. That is something they fight zealously to protect. Transnational gangs and all kinds of malefactors are using Delaware companies around the world to do terrible things."</p>
