<h2>More shows announced by Disney: Lilo &amp; Stitch 2, Hexed and more</h2><p>Disney Animation’s <i>Hexed</i> has added two particularly good voices to its cast. Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country) will voice Queen Celeste, while Walton Goggins (The White Lotus) plays Beef Roger, described as a three-eyed green cat wearing a pink coat who serves as the witch’s sidekick. They join Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye) in the animated film, which arrives this November 25.</p>

<p>Disney and Pixar also unveiled another look at <i>Gatto</i>, which is due in cinemas in March 2027. <p>The<i> Ice Age</i> franchise is returning once again with <i>Ice Age: Boiling Point.</i> Queen Latifah and Denis Leary appeared at D23 to tease the latest animated adventure, which arrives on February 5, 2027, in cinemas.</p>

<p>Following the live-action remake, Disney is wasting little time pushing ahead with <i>Lilo &amp; Stitch 2</i>. Maia Kealoha, who plays Lilo, appeared at D23 and revealed the sequel will introduce Angel, Stitch’s pink counterpart from the wider franchise. <p>Victoria Alonso, a long-time executive at Marvel Studios, was fired abruptly last week. Now a new report in The Hollywood Reporter may point towards a reason, and it has to do with the Argentine historical legal drama film <em>Argentina, 1985</em>, which was nominated for an Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category. Alonso was one of eight producers on the historical drama and breached her contract by assuming a producer role in the film, which was distributed by Amazon. Despite repeated warnings, Alonso continued to violate the terms of her contract, leading to her termination after the Academy Awards 2023 ceremony.</p>

<p>Alonso was let go after she breached a 2018 agreement that stated employees cannot work for competing studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter sources. She did not ask permission to work on the Oscar-nominated film <em>Argentina, 1985</em>, nor did she give notice.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, The Walt Disney Company, better known as Disney, announced it is restructuring itself and that includes laying off 7,000 employees or 3 per cent of its workforce. The company also announced reorganisation into three sections: Disney Entertainment, ESPN, and Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. All this follows Bob Iger getting reinstated as the CEO in November last year, replacing Bob Chapek, a Disney veteran who was removed from the position after dismal earnings reports and controversies that plagued his tenure. Iger, CEO from 2005 to 2020, led the company as it expanded aggressively by acquiring valuable (in terms of popular appeal and expected returns) IPs like Pixar, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Marvel Entertainment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Oh, he also spearheaded the negotiations to acquire 20th Century Fox. Under his leadership, the company became a behemoth. In 2019, the heydays, the studio released an incredible seven movies that surpassed the $1 billion dollar mark. This was domination on an unprecedented scale.</p>

<h2>Signs of concern at Disney</h2>

<p>But since Iger left in 2020, there have been signs of trouble at the company. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic shut down movie and TV productions, and the theatrical film experience all but died. This allowed Netflix, the market leader in streaming, to release already-produced shows and movies and gain millions more subscribers.</p>

<p><strong>Amusing digression:</strong> It is interesting that Iger left Disney in February 2020, a month before the pandemic really came into effect. Not to be a conspiracy theorist or anything, but did he know something we don't?</p>

<p>Anyway, Chapek, who had been at Disney for more than a quarter of a century before being handed the reins, became the man in charge. Call his bad luck or just fate, Disney, like every film studio, suffered when the cinema halls were shuttered by governments around the world in the pandemic-induced lockdown. Many intended-for-theatre movies like Mulan were sent instead to Disney+ in order to strengthen the fledgling streaming service. Then China banned Hollywood movies from releasing in the country, though it did not say it outright (the country has become friendly to American cinema again this year, though).&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Bob Chapek's dismissal and the uncertain future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe</h2>

<p>While many Disney movies continued to do decently, considering the enduring concerns over COVID-19 infection among people, Disney did suffer losses. By the time Chapek's removal neared, the Disney stock had descended to a multi-year low. The quarterly earnings report was even worse than expected. The costs associated with streaming, and dismal returns on the investment only added to the company's financial woes. Disney+, which many said was on course to overtake Netflix eventually in terms of&nbsp;subscriber base, reported a loss of 2.4 million subscriptions. In comparison, it had taken more than a decade for Netflix to lose subscribers (in April last year), and not gain. The company had also lost a large chunk of revenue from parks and experiences.</p>

<p>And the cash cow that was Marvel Cinematic Universe could no longer be relied upon to deliver. If you are generous, MCU's journey post Avengers: Endgame until now can be called mediocre. Analysts say that was due to too much expansion done too quickly. In 2021, Disney+ released five TV shows set in the MCU. The following year, three. Oh, and four MCU movies also saw the light of day in 2021, and three in 2022. This bombardment of content was clearly not appreciated by the fans, many of whom, this scribe included, thought the world of entertainment was saturated too much by Marvel and less by... everything else.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, the interconnectedness of MCU movies used to be a fun thing. Now, it had become annoying whenever a character in a project referenced another movie or show in MCU. It was now artificial and tacky. And there's been little innovation, and almost none of the projects were worthwhile. Due to the abundance of content now, Kevin Feige, the overlord of MCU, could not have quality control over everything. And thus, MCU was suffering.</p>

<p>The latest entry, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, is also crafted in the traditional Marvel mould — designed as per the good old formula that Feige et al perfected over the last one and a half-decade. In other words, it feels like your typical MCU movie. One can understand why the formula has survived. For it has indeed worked. But now even Feige admits it's too much and plans to slow down a bit, at least with the shows. He told Entertainment Weekly, "I do think one of the powerful aspects of being at Marvel Studios is having these films and shows hit the zeitgeist. It is harder to hit the zeitgeist when there’s so much product out there — and so much “content,” as they say, which is a word that I hate. [Laughs] But we want Marvel Studios and the MCU projects to really stand out and stand above. So, people will see that as we get further into Phases 5 and 6. The pace at which we’re putting out the Disney+ shows will change so they can each get a chance to shine."</p>

<h2>What's next for Disney and Iger?</h2>

<p>Ever since he joined, Iger has been proactive in cutting down costs and overhauling strategies. He plans to achieve profitability in streaming by 2024. In terms of IPs, the MCU juggernaut will not stop until it is profitable for the company. And judging purely by the box office numbers, the movies in the cinematic universe remain moneymaking and this may be just a brief lull after the mega extravaganzas that were the last two Avengers movies. On the Star Wars front, several movies and TV shows are in&nbsp;development. With the Fox&nbsp;acquisition, Disney now owns James Cameron's Avatar franchise. The second film, which was released in December last year, has become the third-highest-grossing movie of all time, so we can expect Cameron will get to make as many sequels as he wants. For now, the future of the company's film business looks solid. Though one fallout of the recent losses is that the company will rely on already-popular franchises. The company recently announced Toy Story 5, Frozen 3, and Zootopia 2. With big studios already apprehensive about financing films based on original ideas, it looks like another blow to those who watch more than just tentpole films.</p>

Iger, CEO from 2005 to 2020, led the company as it expanded aggressively by acquiring valuable (in terms of popular appeal and expected returns) IPs like Pixar, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Marvel Entertainment. Oh, he also spearheaded the negotiations to acquire 20th Century Fox. Under his leadership, the company became a behemoth. In 2019, the heydays, the studio released an incredible seven movies that surpassed the $1 billion dollar mark. This was domination on an unprecedented scale. Signs of concern at Disney But since Iger left in 2020, there have been signs of trouble at the company. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic shut down movie and TV productions, and the theatrical film experience all but died. This allowed Netflix, the market leader in streaming, to release already-produced shows and movies and gain millions more subscribers. Not to be a conspiracy theorist or anything, but did he know something we don't? Anyway, Chapek, who had been at Disney for more than a quarter of a century before being handed the reins, became the man in charge. Call his bad luck or just fate, Disney, like every film studio, suffered when the cinema halls were shuttered by governments around the world in the pandemic-induced lockdown. Many intended-for-theatre movies like Mulan were sent instead to Disney+ in order to strengthen the fledgling streaming service. Then China banned Hollywood movies from releasing in the country, though it did not say it outright (the country has become friendly to American cinema again this year, though). Bob Chapek's dismissal and the uncertain future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe While many Disney movies continued to do decently, considering the enduring concerns over COVID-19 infection among people, Disney did suffer losses. By the time Chapek's removal neared, the Disney stock had descended to a multi-year low. The quarterly earnings report was even worse than expected. The costs associated with streaming, and dismal returns on the investment only added to the company's financial woes. Disney+, which many said was on course to overtake Netflix eventually in terms of subscriber base, reported a loss of 2.4 million subscriptions. In comparison, it had taken more than a decade for Netflix to lose subscribers (in April last year), and not gain. The company had also lost a large chunk of revenue from parks and experiences. If you are generous, MCU's journey post Avengers: Endgame until now can be called mediocre. Analysts say that was due to too much expansion done too quickly. In 2021, Disney+ released five TV shows set in the MCU. The following year, three. Oh, and four MCU movies also saw the light of day in 2021, and three in 2022. This bombardment of content was clearly not appreciated by the fans, many of whom, this scribe included, thought the world of entertainment was saturated too much by Marvel and less by... everything else. Earlier, the interconnectedness of MCU movies used to be a fun thing. Now, it had become annoying whenever a character in a project referenced another movie or show in MCU. It was now artificial and tacky. And there's been little innovation, and almost none of the projects were worthwhile. Due to the abundance of content now, Kevin Feige, the overlord of MCU, could not have quality control over everything. And thus, MCU was suffering. The latest entry, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, is also crafted in the traditional Marvel mould — designed as per the good old formula that Feige et al perfected over the last one and a half-decade. In other words, it feels like your typical MCU movie. One can understand why the formula has survived. For it has indeed worked. But now even Feige admits it's too much and plans to slow down a bit, at least with the shows. He told Entertainment Weekly, "I do think one of the powerful aspects of being at Marvel Studios is having these films and shows hit the zeitgeist. It is harder to hit the zeitgeist when there’s so much product out there — and so much “content,” as they say, which is a word that I hate. [Laughs] But we want Marvel Studios and the MCU projects to really stand out and stand above. So, people will see that as we get further into Phases 5 and 6. The pace at which we’re putting out the Disney+ shows will change so they can each get a chance to shine." What's next for Disney and Iger? Ever since he joined, Iger has been proactive in cutting down costs and overhauling strategies. He plans to achieve profitability in streaming by 2024. In terms of IPs, the MCU juggernaut will not stop until it is profitable for the company. And judging purely by the box office numbers, the movies in the cinematic universe remain moneymaking and this may be just a brief lull after the mega extravaganzas that were the last two Avengers movies. On the Star Wars front, several movies and TV shows are in development. With the Fox acquisition, Disney now owns James Cameron's Avatar franchise. The second film, which was released in December last year, has become the third-highest-grossing movie of all time, so we can expect Cameron will get to make as many sequels as he wants. For now, the future of the company's film business looks solid. Though one fallout of the recent losses is that the company will rely on already-popular franchises. The company recently announced Toy Story 5, Frozen 3, and Zootopia 2. With big studios already apprehensive about financing films based on original ideas, it looks like another blow to those who watch more than just tentpole films. <p>I am referring, of course, to the show’s practice of releasing new episodes only once every week.</p>

<p>Releasing TV installments on a schedule — “Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel,” as the show’s superhero predecessor “Batman” promised — was standard practice in the days of black-and-white TV, and still is on most traditional networks. But the age of Netflix has led accustomed streaming fans to getting full seasons all at once, and some WandaViewers did not care to wait for what an IndieWire review referred to as “inconvenient weekly installments.”</p>

<p>“WandaVision” is not the first streaming show to face complaints for not feeding its audience on the all-you-can-eat plan. Last year, Eric Kripke, showrunner of Amazon’s dystopian superhero drama “The Boys,” defended the decision to release Season 2’s episodes weekly, against some fans’ objections, “to have time to sort of slow down a little bit and have conversations about everything.” (“The Boys” did release its first three episodes on its premiere date, “WandaVision” its first two; Disney is also following the weekly model with its latest Marvel series, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”)</p>

<p>Slow down? We are not much of a slowdown society these days. If people can have something, they increasingly believe they should, in Costco-size portions, to be savored or swallowed anaconda-like as they see fit. Who the hell is anyone else to tell us to chew between bites? We’ll chew when we feel like it!</p>

<p>Fans’ increasing expectation of — and creators’ occasional pushback against — the binge model resonates with other tech-driven arguments over how art should properly be enjoyed. Should the audience or the artist decide how the work is best experienced? Are you violating the artistic intention of an album when you listen to it on shuffle? Are you a cretin for watching a movie on your phone when the director insisted it be viewed on a big screen?</p>

<p>Certainly, advocates of “I want it all, now” can sound entitled, like kids on the Wonka factory tour grousing that the gobstoppers aren’t coming fast enough. But there can also be a kind of high-handedness to the defense of weekly airings, as if the communal watercooler ritual were somehow more authentic, and as if viewers needed to be guided toward the correct choice lest they, like children failing the marshmallow test, make the wrong one.</p>

<p>Maybe a more useful way of looking at the weekly and binge models is that neither is inherently better. Instead, they’re one more set of storytelling tools — like shooting in front of a studio audience, or not — creatively suited to different kinds of stories.</p>

<p>Release schedules, like many aspects of TV, are a case of the creative format following the business model. In the days of rabbit ears TV, you watched a show when it was beamed at you or not at all. Weekly (or daily) schedules built habits and fan bases.</p>

<p>When Netflix entered the original-series business in the early 2010s, it could have followed some form of scheduling. Instead, dropping full seasons at once was a way of branding it as a forward-looking business — this ain’t your grandma’s TV! — and a way to find viewers where broadcast TV wasn’t. (By letting viewers watch at their leisure, Netflix laid claim to the vast stretches, like Fridays and Saturdays, when fans had a lot of time and less marquee scheduled programming.)</p>

<p>For an era — well, a few years — this defined streaming TV. And the different formats led to different creative forms. Traditional TV serials broke stories into structured units with tune-in-next-time endings. Binge series are often looser in episode structure, sometimes to the extent that whole seasons can feel like extended “episodes.” (Or extended movies, such as Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” whose season titles — “Stranger Things 2” and “Stranger Things 3”— recalled the film franchises that inspired the series.)</p>

<p>Eventually some competitors, including Hulu, Apple and Disney, separated themselves from Netflix with old-school weekly schedules, at least for some series. And Disney+, with its first streaming phenomena, showed that the traditional TV schedule works best for shows that play like traditional TV, with tight episode construction and careful maintenance of suspense.</p>

<p>Mystery, in particular, lends itself well to the waiting game. In “WandaVision,” part of the mystery was the show itself: What were these weekly “sitcoms,” really, and who was in charge? The effect wasn’t ruined by bingeing (I recently rewatched it with my wife, who caught up on it over a couple of days), but it really benefited from giving it a long-term lease in your head.</p>

<p>Disney+’s “Star Wars” western, “The Mandalorian,” was a different sort of mystery. Each episode arrived with little information about what it was or where it was going. (The existence of its pint-size breakout star, Grogu, aka Baby Yoda, wasn’t even revealed until the end of the first episode.) Every installment dropped you into a new world, on a new adventure, without warning; it felt like watching a serial short before the main feature at an old-timey movie parlor.</p>

<p>But “mystery” here doesn’t have to mean genre mystery. This was the case with “Mad Men,” whose creator, Matthew Weiner, has said, with justification, that it wouldn’t work if released a full season at a time. Its artfully withholding storytelling and its willingness to drop the viewer in unexplained circumstances made watching feel like allowing yourself to be blindfolded and kidnapped once a week. (Of course, that hasn’t stopped bingers from mainlining it during the pandemic.)</p>

<p>Bingeing, on the other hand, benefits certain kinds of immersive long-form TV that Netflix has gotten adept at: more straightforward miniseries, such as “The Queen’s Gambit,” and the visual equivalent of page-turner novels, such as “Bridgerton.” In some cases, a binge also helps gloss over weaknesses or repetitions that you might linger on with more time to dwell on them. (In general, I’m thinking of serial stories here; sitcoms, anthologies or procedurals with self-contained episodes feel less affected by the choice.)</p>

<p>There are also business dimensions to the debate, particularly the argument that spreading a season over months can allow a show to build word-of-mouth and grow, whereas binge-series just crash and recede, like waves on an endless content ocean. But business and artistic choices are two different things.</p>

<p>HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” for instance, might not have become the same mass phenomenon if it had dropped its seasons Netflix-style. But (unpopular opinion alert!) it plays better as a binge. All those slow-rolling character arcs are clearer, the ending feels better foreshadowed — even Daenerys’ years wandering Essos don’t seem quite so interminable.</p>

<p>NBC’s afterlife comedy “The Good Place,” likewise, always felt to me like a binge show trapped in weekly form, with the end of each episode igniting the storyline of the next, in the chain-smoking fashion of so many Netflix shows.</p>

<p>On the other hand, the first season of Amazon’s corporate mystery “Homecoming” might have built more suspense if it had been doled out over weeks. And on the other hand, Apple TV+’s alternative space-race drama “For All Mankind,” a slow burn of a series whose current season builds to two gripping final episodes, might have been better dropped all at once; I could see it losing viewers on the long, digressive journey before the payoff.</p>

<p>Regardless, it’s good to see streaming platforms experimenting with their schedules; hopefully, they’re starting to see “To binge or not to binge?” as one creative choice among many. It made sense for Netflix to prove that the binge model could work, which unlocked a form of TV storytelling whose rules creators are still figuring out.</p>

<p>But just because you can make TV a certain way now doesn’t mean you always should. Sometimes, good things come from those who make you wait.</p>

Mystery, in particular, lends itself well to the waiting game. In “WandaVision,” part of the mystery was the show itself: What were these weekly “sitcoms,” really, and who was in charge? (The existence of its pint-size breakout star, Grogu, aka Baby Yoda, wasn’t even revealed until the end of the first episode.) Every installment dropped you into a new world, on a new adventure, without warning; it felt like watching a serial short before the main feature at an old-timey movie parlor. But “mystery” here doesn’t have to mean genre mystery. This was the case with “Mad Men,” whose creator, Matthew Weiner, has said, with justification, that it wouldn’t work if released a full season at a time. Its artfully withholding storytelling and its willingness to drop the viewer in unexplained circumstances made watching feel like allowing yourself to be blindfolded and kidnapped once a week. (Of course, that hasn’t stopped bingers from mainlining it during the pandemic.) Bingeing, on the other hand, benefits certain kinds of immersive long-form TV that Netflix has gotten adept at: more straightforward miniseries, such as “The Queen’s Gambit,” and the visual equivalent of page-turner novels, such as “Bridgerton.” In some cases, a binge also helps gloss over weaknesses or repetitions that you might linger on with more time to dwell on them. (In general, I’m thinking of serial stories here; sitcoms, anthologies or procedurals with self-contained episodes feel less affected by the choice.) There are also business dimensions to the debate, particularly the argument that spreading a season over months can allow a show to build word-of-mouth and grow, whereas binge-series just crash and recede, like waves on an endless content ocean. But business and artistic choices are two different things. HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” for instance, might not have become the same mass phenomenon if it had dropped its seasons Netflix-style. But (unpopular opinion alert!) it plays better as a binge. All those slow-rolling character arcs are clearer, the ending feels better foreshadowed — even Daenerys’ years wandering Essos don’t seem quite so interminable. NBC’s afterlife comedy “The Good Place,” likewise, always felt to me like a binge show trapped in weekly form, with the end of each episode igniting the storyline of the next, in the chain-smoking fashion of so many Netflix shows. On the other hand, the first season of Amazon’s corporate mystery “Homecoming” might have built more suspense if it had been doled out over weeks. And on the other hand, Apple TV+’s alternative space-race drama “For All Mankind,” a slow burn of a series whose current season builds to two gripping final episodes, might have been better dropped all at once; I could see it losing viewers on the long, digressive journey before the payoff. Regardless, it’s good to see streaming platforms experimenting with their schedules; hopefully, they’re starting to see “To binge or not to binge?” as one creative choice among many. It made sense for Netflix to prove that the binge model could work, which unlocked a form of TV storytelling whose rules creators are still figuring out. But just because you can make TV a certain way now doesn’t mean you always should. Sometimes, good things come from those who make you wait.
