Rubio: US had no role in Bolsonaro's exit, Trump yet to decide on Iran strikes

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday urged G20 counterparts, including Russia's Sergei Lavrov, to work together to address geopolitical crises, warning that the world is at a decisive moment as conflicts in Ukraine and Iran deepen divisions among member countries. A traditional group photograph scheduled for Friday morning was cancelled shortly before the two-day meeting began after some European officials objected to appearing alongside Lavrov.&nbsp;European leaders have also refused to participate in photographs with Russian delegations at previous G20 meetings this year, as fighting continues following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. A US official said the photograph was cancelled because of the controversy and to prevent a ceremonial photo opportunity from becoming a diplomatic distraction. The foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, is taking place just days before the US midterm elections. It also comes as global energy prices have surged following the US war on Iran.&nbsp; The gathering will set the stage for a December G20 leaders' summit in Miami at President Donald Trump's Doral resort. However, despite Washington's efforts to prioritise economic growth, trade imbalances and supply chain challenges, including energy and critical minerals, major breakthroughs are not expected. A diplomatic source said the meeting would likely end with a chair summary drafted by the United States rather than a final declaration.&nbsp;Addressing the opening plenary on Friday, Rubio said the world was facing a critical ‘moment of choosing’ as it dealt with interconnected economic and geopolitical crises. He called on the Group of 20 economies, which include China, India, Russia, Japan, Germany and France, to cooperate in tackling threats to global energy and food supply chains, as well as protecting freedom of navigation.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/gravitas/putin-s-war-warning-shakes-europe-nato-builds-war-bunkers-britain-stockpiles-food-gravitas-1793383901529">Putin's war warning shakes Europe: NATO builds war bunkers, Britain stockpiles food | Gravitas</a><h2>'No normality' with Russia</h2>Russia has remained isolated by most Western countries since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, while Lavrov continues to face international sanctions. Ahead of the Atlanta meeting, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul told German media that there is no normality with Russia. "We have to exchange our differences of opinion here at the table," he said. "But we must not send out any misleading visual signals," he added, referring to European objections to appearing in a photograph with Lavrov.&nbsp;"Today, in this forum, I will once again call on Russia to finally accept Ukraine's offer of a ceasefire, starting in the Black Sea," Wadephul said. Rubio's meeting with Lavrov is expected to attract considerable attention as Washington continues diplomatic efforts over Ukraine while seeking Moscow's cooperation in bringing down fuel prices, a major campaign issue ahead of the US midterm elections. Lavrov's visit to the United States comes ahead of fresh negotiations between Moscow, Kyiv and Washington scheduled for November.&nbsp; However, analysts said his presence was not unexpected, given that Washington has welcomed Russian officials to G20 events this year while excluding member country South Africa. Trump has also invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to Miami for the December summit. He has eased some sanctions on Moscow while promoting a deal allowing Russia to sell diesel as rising prices put pressure on American consumers.<h2>Threat of further escalation</h2>Freedom of navigation is another major issue on Washington's agenda. A US State Department official highlighted the need for a shared resolve to confront urgent crises and keep critical sea lanes open to commerce without threats or tolls. Global energy prices have surged since US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February prompted Tehran to block the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is a vital route for the global transportation of oil, gas and fertilisers.&nbsp;China's top diplomat Wang Yi did not attend the Atlanta gathering and instead sent his deputy. Meanwhile, the possibility of further escalation in the Middle East is growing, with Trump signalling that he could launch an attack after Tuesday's midterm elections.<h2>Kaja Kallas accuses Lavrov of spreading 'lies' during G20 talks on Ukraine&nbsp;</h2>European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas accused Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of presenting false narratives during G20 discussions on the Ukraine conflict, saying Moscow was showing no willingness to engage in genuine peace negotiations. "We were talking about the big geopolitical crises, including Ukraine, and we were able to address Sergei Lavrov head-on with this," Kaja Kallas said on the sidelines of a G20 foreign ministers' meeting.&nbsp;"Of course, he put forward a lot of lies, a lot of false narratives that we were also able to then rebuke," she added. Kallas said Russia's actions continued to contradict any claims that it was willing to pursue peace talks. "Even if they would have said this in words, their deeds tell something else," she said. “July, August, and September have been the deadliest months for civilians in Ukraine.” "They should show with their deeds that they are ready to negotiate, but they are clearly, clearly not," she added.

India has maintained that its energy decisions must take into account the requirements of its large population and the need to secure reliable supplies at competitive prices. Any progress on the issue could have implications for the wider economic relationship between the two countries. His Mumbai meetings will take place against the backdrop of negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement, which has cleared the first phase. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had indicated that the trade negotiations are approaching a possible resolution, while acknowledging that some issues remain outstanding. Rubio’s visit could provide an opportunity for the two sides to assess the broader state of economic relations. Why Jamnagar matters Beyond Mumbai, Rubio is scheduled to visit Jamnagar, home to Reliance Industries’ major oil-refining complex. The proposed visit comes amid a broader push by the US administration to deepen energy and commercial links with India. Reliance’s reported plans to invest in a new refinery in Brownsville, Texas, have added significance to the energy dimension of the relationship. His earlier visit in May included engagements in Kolkata and New Delhi, where he met Indian leaders and participated in the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting. Before travelling to India, Rubio is scheduled to visit Uzbekistan for the C5+1 Ministerial meeting in Samarkand and bilateral engagements with Central Asian leaders. His wider tour is intended to advance US diplomatic and economic engagement across the region.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to visit Mumbai on October 18-19 and then Jamnagar in Gujarat. The visit comes amid continuing differences between New Delhi and Washington over India’s purchases of Russian oil and US measures targeting countries that buy Russian energy.

US Secretary of state Marco Rubio to visit India on 19th October

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday (Sept. 23) that Washington was seeking a halt to attacks by Russia and Ukraine on each other’s energy infrastructure.&nbsp;“We'll try, and I think we're prepared to play a positive role if we can in making that come about,” Rubio said.&nbsp;Rubio's remarks came a day after he said U.S. linked oil infrastructure had been targeted in recent weeks during the Russia-Ukraine war. He also linked recent increases in oil prices to fighting in the Black Sea between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the conflict in Yemen involving the Houthis.&nbsp;“The one thing we are concerned about, however, is that over the last few months, on a number of occasions, American-linked ships and American oil supplies have been targeted, probably not deliberately, but targeted nonetheless by Ukraine. These people can never have nuclear weapons... Eventually, someone has to do something about it or it’s going to happen.” “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon—they just simply can’t. If we can’t use our base when we have a contingency, then what’s the point of having the base and, frankly, what’s the point of having the alliance?” Replying to a question on the Greenland deal, Rubio said, “It’s a great deal. It’s a fantastic achievement... Multiple American presidents understood the geographic importance of Greenland. This is the first president that actually has done something about it.”

The US State Department on Thursday (August 20) stated that China's detention of American scholar U Min Zin is unjust and confirmed that securing his release has become a key priority for President Donald Trump's administration as the leaders of the two countries prepare for a Washington meeting next month.&nbsp;According to media reports, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio moved to review Min Zin’s case following his detention on 3 June in China's Yunnan province in southwestern China, where he had travelled at the government's own invitation to take part in an academic conference. Min Zin's brother stated that he had journeyed to Yunnan this summer to attend a conference at Kunming University, invited by a professor he'd known since 2018. He had made previous trips to China without incident, including one for a conference in 2025. This time, however, he was taken into custody almost as soon as he landed in Beijing, with Chinese authorities alleging he is "suspected of spying and endangering Chinese national [security]."<h3>Who is Min Zin?</h3>Min Zin is a Myanmar native and also an expert on his country. He was a student activist during the pro-democracy movement in his youth. He later became a US citizen after marrying, and then the couple went on to have a teenage daughter. In 2016, Min Zin returned to Myanmar, where he founded a think tank, the Institute for Strategy and Policy-Myanmar (ISP). Following the 2021 coup, he and his family relocated to Thailand, where they have remained ever since. His brother, Aung Maw Zin, recalled that the year 2012 was incredibly important in Min Zin’s life, adding that he became both a naturalised US citizen and a father. A US federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration's policy freezing green card applications from 75 countries was unlawful, dealing a significant setback to President Donald Trump's immigration agenda.

The ruling, issued by US District Judge Amit Mehta in Washington, D.C., found that the State Department's "public charge" policy exceeded the authority granted under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Introduced earlier this year by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the policy had largely halted immigrant visa processing for applicants from countries including Nigeria, Colombia, Russia, and Egypt.

The policy mainly affected family-sponsored immigrant visa applicants and some employment-based green card applicants. While the administration argued that the measure was intended to prevent immigrants from relying on public assistance, critics said it effectively blocked applications without proper individual review.

The Middle East conflict is entering a dangerous new phase as Yemen's Houthi rebels intensify attacks on Saudi-linked shipping in the Red Sea. After announcing a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, the Houthis claim they have struck Saudi oil tankers, raising fears of a wider regional war and renewed disruption to global energy supplies.
The escalation comes as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains heavily disrupted, placing immense pressure on another vital maritime chokepoint—the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Saudi Arabia, which has relied on Red Sea ports to bypass Hormuz, now faces fresh threats to its oil exports.

US President Donald Trump has once again accused China of interfering in the 2020 US Presidential Election, claiming Beijing obtained American voter data and attempted to influence the election. Speaking at the White House, Trump said the alleged interference happened "a long time ago" but confirmed that the United States would raise the issue with China. The remarks come just ahead of the expected Xi Jinping visit to Washington, as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met China's top diplomat in Manila to prepare the groundwork for high-level talks. However, Rubio reportedly did not raise Trump's election interference allegations during the meeting, instead focusing on Iran, trade, fentanyl trafficking, and broader US-China relations.
