IPL 2023: Mark Wood's fifer headlines LSG's day in one-sided contest, beat Delhi Capitals by 50 runs

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) coach Andy Flower admits he had written off injured Mohsin Khan as a selection option for this season but adds if the left-arm seamer gets fit at any stage later in the tournament, he would be happy to include him in the scheme of things. Last season’s hero, Mohsin suffered a shoulder injury, and while he continues to be with the squad doing his training and rehab, he remains unavailable for selection until further notice.

Speaking ahead of the IPL 2023 opener on Friday, Flower said Mohsin’s absence comes as a body blow to LSG, who will now have to find alternatives to deliver at the top level. Flower added though he wants his franchise’s find-of-the-tournament to get in line for selection, he doesn’t expect that to happen in reality.

"It is a blow not having him; there is no doubt about that. We are hoping that he might come good towards the end of the tournament," Flower said during a media interaction. "But, quite frankly, I had pretty much written him off as a selection option, and if he becomes fit at some stage during the tournament, I see that very much as a bonus. But I am certainly not expecting that.

"He (Mohsin) was a brilliant performer last season, and he showed how quickly one move can up in a matter of weeks. That's really exciting for any young cricketer to witness," Flower added.

"Our goal is obviously to win this competition. I suppose the first big step in that direction is getting through to the playoffs. We will have obviously individual plans for them (Delhi Capitals), they are a quality side, every IPL team have match-winners in their XI, and we will have individual plans for them," Andy concluded.

Two young left-arm seamers, Mukesh Choudhary and Mohsin Khan are in serious doubt to play in the upcoming IPL 2023 due to injuries. Mukesh and Mohsin got picked by Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, respectively, for INR 20 lacs each ahead of last year’s auction. They impressed everyone, including the critics and the pundits with their performances. This time, they are nursing injuries, and while they are in constant touch with their franchises, even training with them, both are running against time to get fit.

As things stand, Mukesh is suffering from a back injury and is currently training at the National Cricket Academy and undergoing rehab. Mohsin on the other hand is training with the Lucknow squad but is likely to spend time on the sidelines throughout the season.

<h3>LSG in new shades</h3>

Ahead of the latest season, LSG took to their social media handle to showcase their new kit and will be wearing the Navy Blue colours for the premier tournament. Earlier, the shades of the team were Sky Blue, but have opted to change the colours ahead of the upcoming season. LSG made a bold statement in the IPL 2023 auctions as they brought in Nicholas Pooran for Rs 16 crore and have bolstered their ranks this season.

LSG became the newest participant in the IPL fold in 2016 after Sanjeev Goenka-owned RPSG group bought them for a whopping Rs. 7,090 crores. Gautam Gambhir was adjourned as the mentor of the side and was seen in the dugout of the side. KL Rahul was bought up for an astonishing price tag of Rs 17 crores ahead of the first season in 2022.

Rahul finished second to Jos Buttler in the Orange Cap race and ended with 616 runs in the IPL 2022 season. On the flip side, the team won 11 of the 16 IPL matches in the process qualifying for the playoffs, where they eventually lost to RCB.

Skipper Rahul will look at the season as an opportunity to revive his career as he looks to regain his form. He was recently dropped in favour of Shubman Gill in the Indian Test side for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Gambhir has set up a kitchen in Delhi's Gandhi Nagar where the poor and needy can get meals at the cost of just Rs 1. Thousands of people get affordable meals from his kitchen every month. Gambhir said he pays for all of it from his own pocket and is not ashamed of working despite being a politician.

“Why I commentate in IPL or work in it is because I spend INR 25 lakh (INR 2.5 million) every month to feed 5000 people. This translates to roughly 2.75 crore (INR 27.5 million) per year. I've also spent INR 25 lakh to build a library," Gambhir said during the press conference.

“I spend all of this money from my own pocket and not from the MPLAD fund. The MPLAD fund doesn't run my kitchen or other things that I do. I don't have a tree in my house from where I can pluck money either.

Only because I work, am I able to feed those 5000 people or establish that library. I have no shame in saying that I do commentary and work in the IPL. All of this that I do has an ultimate goal,” he added.
