ENG vs IND: When and where to watch England vs India 1st T20I match - IST time and streaming details

India dominated proceedings for most parts in the just-concluded Edgbaston Test before losing the contest by seven wickets as the five-match series, which commenced during 2021 English summer, ended in a 2-2 stalemate on Tuesday (July 06).

In Rohit Sharma's absence, India were led by pacer Jasprit Bumrah whereas Rishabh Pant was his deputy. India were asked to bat first as they posted 416 after centuries from Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. In reply, England posted 284 courtesy of Jonny Bairstow's ton, giving a 132-run healthy lead to Team India. India, however, didn't capitalise and only managed to post 245 in their second essay, setting up a challenging 378-run target. While the target was a stiff one, India had a chance to completely bat England out of the contest by setting up anything over 450, however, they fell flat. In the run-chase, England were 109/3 before tons from Bairstow and Root took India home.

After the match, former Indian stumper Deep Dasgupta highlighted a glaring issue which has been a big factor in the national side's recent failures.

"It is very important for the team to have a stable captain. The position of the captain had been really [unstable] in the last few months, especially during England Test or Ireland tour," Dasgupta told ANI. "Due to injury and any other reason, we had to shuffle between captains. But now Rohit is fit and is available for the upcoming games," he stated.

"With only 2-3 months left for the T20 World Cup, there are many players who have showcased their spectacular performances. India is left with 20-22 games before the World Cup, so the selectors might have started shortlisting the players for the big tournament. Each and every match will be very important from now on," Dasgupta added.

India tour of WI: Shikhar Dhawan to lead ODI side as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli & other big guns rested

Virat Kohli's century-drought remains a talking point in the cricketing fraternity. It isn't an unknown fact that the 33-year-old former skipper's last international hundred came in late 2019, in the pre-Covid era. Since then, the right-hander has crossed the fifty-run mark on several occasions, especially in shorter formats, but hasn't touched the triple-figure mark.

Ahead of the fifth and final Test between India and England -- which is part of the incomplete five-match series held last year in England -- former Indian opener Aakash Chopra opined whether Kohli will be able to break his century jinx during the series decider, which got underway on Friday (July 01) in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

"Kohli and Pant together will score more than 120 runs. The big question is will Kohli finally get his 71st hundred in this game? I don't think so. Although he got his first Test hundred in England on this ground, I doubt whether he will get a hundred this time. But he and Pant will still be among the runs," the former India batter said on his YouTube channel.

At present, India are 53 for 2 in 20.1 overs after being asked to bat first in the first session of the opening day before rain, and wet outfield, interrupted proceedings. Jasprit Bumrah is leading India in regular captain Rohit Sharma's absence, who is ruled out due to Covid concerns.

Will Virat Kohli end his century-drought in one-off Test vs England? Former Indian opener gives his verdict

In 1959, as many as five players (Vinoo Mankad, Hemu Adhikari, Datta Gaekwad, Pankaj Roy and Gulabrai Ramchand) led Team India. In 2022, India have broken the 63-year-old record as Jasprit Bumrah became the sixth player to lead the team in the calendar year.

It has been a unique year for India, with captaincy changes happening at regular intervals due to injury and Covid concerns or with two sides playing parallelly. In this regard, the likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and now Bumrah have led India across formats. Kohli led India in a solitary Test, during the third and final match versus hosts South Africa, before resigning from the post. KL Rahul had led in his place in the second and penultimate Test with Kohli out of action due to injury. Rahul also led in the three ODIs in South Africa before Rohit Sharma resumed captaincy duties in the home white-ball series versus West Indies and Sri Lanka, respectively.

Post IPL 2022, Rishabh Pant led India in the five T20Is versus the Proteas at home, as regulars such as Rohit, Kohli, etc. were rested before the one-off Test against England. Hardik led India in the recently-concluded Ireland T20Is as Rohit & Co. were preparing for their rescheduled fifth and final Test versus the Three Lions, which got underway on Friday (July 01). With Rohit being ruled out of the England Test due to Covid concerns, Bumrah became the sixth captain of India in 2022.

Talking about the final Test, Ben Stokes-led England opted to bowl first versus India. Bumrah said at the toss, "It's a good feeling (to be captain) and is a big privilege. Can't get better than this. Excited and looking forward to this." Ahead of the match, head coach Rahul Dravid told the broadcasters, "I think he (Bumrah) is a very thoughtful individual, understands the game very well. Also he commands the respect of the team, which is very important as a leader. Bowling changes, field changes obviously will only get better with time. It's a new challenge. It's not easy for a fast bowler to captain, he's got to think about his own bowling too. Have had a few conversations with him, and told him that we need him more as a bowler. Captaincy is something that you'll get better at as you do it more."

Bumrah became the second pacer to lead India in the purest format after Kapil Dev. He is officially India's 36th Test captain.

ENG vs IND, 5th Test: Jasprit Bumrah becomes India's 6th captain in 2022, shatters 63-year-old record

Team India are in a spot of bother ahead of the fifth and final Test versus England, which will get underway on July 01 in Edgbaston, Birmingham. On Sunday (June 26), the regular captain Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 and went into isolation since then. As per a report in PTI, Rohit tested positive for the deadly virus once again on Wednesday (June 29) and was scheduled to undergo another test in the evening, followed by another on Thursday (June 30) on the eve of the final Test.

Addressing the media during a press conference, head coach Rahul Dravid spoke on Rohit's availability, whether Jasprit Bumrah will captain in Hitman's absence, and also made heads turn by stating that the team has plenty of options regarding who will open with Shubman Gill if Rohit misses out.

In this regard, Dravid said during a press conference, "We'll make a decision. We will weigh a lot of factors. Obviously, Mayank is a regular opener. someone who opens regularly. We have other options too; (KS) Bharat himself has opened in a lot of games for Andhra and showed in that side game that he is batting superbly at the moment. He scored a 70 and a 40 (43) after opening the batting. We got him to open in that innings keeping a lot of things in mind."

Dravid also added No. 3 batter Cheteshwar Pujara's name in the mix and said, "Pujara has got a lot of great quality. He has opened for India as well in the past. So I would not want to give things away, but like I said, in our minds, we are clear on the direction we are going. We will see what happens to Rohit, but I am not at liberty to disclose the playing XI. But we have clarity."

In Pujara's absence, when he was dropped for the Sri Lanka home series early this year, Hanuma Vihari had been slotted at the No. 3 position. Even Hanuma has opened for India in the MCG Test in 2018-19. Hence, India have a lot of options if Rohit misses out. For the unversed, regular opener KL Rahul is also out of action due to injury. Thus, India is without their two openers who commenced the innings in the four Tests of the incomplete five-match series versus England, which ended abruptly last year due to the Covid crisis in the then Virat Kohli-led Indian camp.

India is ahead by 2-1 in the series and, thus, have an unassailable lead. Hence, they have a solid chance to win a Test series on English soil for the first time since 2007.

Rahul Dravid names 3 batters who could open for India if Rohit Sharma gets ruled out of 5th Test vs England

India's top three looks pretty much settled heading into the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia this year. While skipper Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are likely to open the batting, Virat Kohli will continue batting at number three for the Men in Blue. The trio has been consistent at the top over the years now but their recent form and struggles over improving their strike rate don't inspire much confidence.

While Rahul had a brilliant campaign in IPL 2022, amassing over 600 runs yet again this season, his inability to accelerate in the Power play and during crucial phases of the game cost his team Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) a couple of games. On the other hand, both Kohli and Rohit had below-par seasons with the bat by their own standards.

With intense competition for spots in the batting line-up and the emergence of the likes of Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad among others as openers, the strike rate of Rohit, Rahul and Kohli remains a concern for the Indian team. Speaking about the same, former India cricketer Saba Karim said the trio needs to find solutions for the issues soon.

While he insisted all three of Rohit, Rahul and Kohli will walk into the XI, Karim suggested the selectors to have hard conversations with the trio if their strike rate doesn't improve in the build-up to the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

"A tough call for the selectors. At this stage, I'm sure all three of them (Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul) will walk into the XI," Karim said in an interaction arranged by Sony Sports Network.

"If such criticism (over strike-rate) is being levelled at them, it is up to them to find a solution so that they emerge in a much better manner. And if it's not happening then the team management or selectors need to have hard conversations with the individuals involved because there is stiff competition coming through. The players whom you have named enough experience to make the required changes in their batting so that it is beneficial for the national side. India are certain to head into the T20 World Cup 2022 with Rohit, Rahul and Kohli as their top three. They are also the senior-most batters in the side and will have to shoulder more responsibility than others in the difficult conditions Down Under. While Rahul is currently out with an injury, Rohit and Kohli are expected to feature in the T20I series against England next month.

Also Read: 'We are generally the enemy': Maxwell left in awe after special gesture from Sri Lankan fans in Colombo While he insisted all three of Rohit, Rahul and Kohli will walk into the XI, Karim suggested the selectors to have hard conversations with the trio if their strike rate doesn't improve in the build-up to the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. I'm sure they understand the needs of modern T20 batting," he added. Selectors need to have hard conversations with Rohit, Kohli & Rahul over their strike-rate: Ex-India cricketer

Among the cricket fans, all eyes are on the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022, which will be held in Sri Lanka, followed by the T20 World Cup, set to be held in Australia in October-November. The two big marquee events will also give fans plenty to cheer for as India and Pakistan will square off against each other in both the tournaments.

Last year, the senior men's teams locked horns against each other in the T20 World Cup (T20 WC), held in the UAE. Contrary to expectations, the Babar Azam-led Men in Green demolished India by ten wickets to achieve their maiden win over their Asian neighbours in any World Cup (ODIs or T20Is). Thus, this time around, fans will see more of both sides against each other in the Asia Cup as well as the eighth edition of the T20 WC. Ahead of the rivalry getting resumed on the 22-yard cricket strip, former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has made a big statement claiming that Babar & Co. are a better side than Rohit Sharma-led India.

"India is no doubt a good team, but there’s no example of the way Pakistan is currently playing cricket," the former Pakistan cricketer was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan. "Pakistan has players like Shaheen Shah Afridi, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan who are currently named as the best players by the ICC," he opined.

Further, the ex-Pakistan captain and keeper feels it will be India vs Pakistan in the Asia Cup, to be held in the Island nation in August-September, in the T20I format. "I am hopeful for Pakistan to win the Asia Cup in 2022. The victory against India in the recent T20 World Cup 2021 has increased hopes for Pakistan," Latif stated. "No doubt other teams are also competitive, but the main competition in Asia Cup 2022 will be between India and Pakistan," Latif mentioned.

'India is a good team, but....' - Rashid Latif makes big statement on Men in Blue's rivalry with Pakistan

India were handed a huge blow ahead of the all-important one-off 5th Test against England in Edgbaston, Birmingham after KL Rahul was ruled out due to an injury. The opening batter had earlier missed the recently-concluded T20I series against South Africa at home after suffering a groin injury and is set to remain on the sidelines ahead of the Test match against England.

Rahul was named captain of the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma for the five T20Is against South Africa. However, he was ruled out of the series ahead of the opening game and will not return to the team for the upcoming Ireland and England tours. While India have not named his replacement for the England Test, there were speculations about Cheteshwar Pujara being promoted as an opener in his absence.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently took to social media to post footage from India's training sessions at Leicestershire and hinted at India's opening pair for the Test match. With captain Rohit Sharma confirmed to open the innings, there was a tussle between Pujara and Shubman Gill for the second spot.

However, BCCI's post has now hinted that Rohit will open the batting with Gill in the upcoming four-day warm-up match in Leicestershire followed by the 5th Test against England. "#TeamIndia openers captain @rohitsharma45 and @shubmangill are getting into the groove on Day 1 of our nets session," BCCI captioned their post with pictures of Gill and Rohit batting in the nets.

The 5th Test was originally scheduled to be played in Manchester last year during India's tour of England. However, it was postponed due to COVID-19 and will now be completed in Edgbaston in July. It will be the final game of the five-match series between the two teams which is currently locked at 2-1 in India's favour.

If India manage to win or draw the Test match, it will be a historic series win for the visitors. India have never won a Test series in England since 2007 and this will be their first triumph on English soil in the whites since 2007.

Will Cheteshwar Pujara open against England in KL Rahul's absence? BCCI's post hints at India's opening pair

India and South Africa were involved in a closely-fought five-match T20I series in the former's own backyard, which ended tamely with the fifth and final encounter being abandoned on Sunday (June 19). Due to persistent rain in Bengaluru, the final match of the series led to a no-result, however, Rishabh Pant-led Men in Blue had a lot of takeaways from the series.

The return and form of Dinesh Karthik, who made a comeback in the Team India setup after almost three years, made heads turn. DK returned with a tough 21-ball 30* in the second T20I and was the Player-of-the-Match in the fourth and final encounter, in Rajkot, which helped India level the series 2-2 before the final game resulted in no winner. Thus, calls have intensified for him to be a part of Rohit Sharma-led India's 2022 T20 World Cup squad.

DK had a splendid IPL 2022 season as well, returning with 330 runs at a strike rate of 183.33. Thus, he carried his form for India whereas Rishabh Pant fell flat with the bat in the SA series, ending with scores of 29, 5, 6, 17 and 1*. He had a decent IPL 15, scoring 340 runs at 151.78 but hardly made match-winning contributions, unlike DK.

Thus, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan -- who was part of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious 2007 T20 World Cup squad and ended as the Player-of-the-Match in the finale -- picked his ideal XI for Rohit & Co., naming DK over Pant.

Speaking to Star Sports, Pathan picked star batters KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the top 3 of his World Cup playing XI. “In Australia, you need powerful starts because the ball swings and seams a lot. Further, after picking the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, Irfan chose DK over Pant and mentioned his all-rounders in Ravindra Jadeja, Harshal Patel (who can bat a bit) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar before ending his XI with Yuzvendra Chahal and Jasprit Bumrah.

India legend Rahul Dravid has had to work with a number of different captains since taking over as the head coach of the Indian cricket team last year. Dravid was appointed as the coach of the Men in Blue after former head coach Ravi Shastri's contract expired following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 last year. Dravid has seen overseen a huge transition in Indian cricket.

After Shastri's departure, Virat Kohli stepped down as the captain of the Indian T20I team before he was also asked to let go of Test and ODI captaincy paving way for Rohit Sharma to take over as India's captain across all three formats. However, with injuries and COVID-19 still wreaking havoc, Dravid has had to work with not just Kohli and Rohit but many other players leading the side.

Opening up about the regular changes in the leadership of the Indian team, head coach Dravid said it is not something that the team management had planned for but it has been due to COVID, injuries and workload management that a number of captains have had to be installed over the last few months.

"Probably been 6 captains in the last 8 months that I have had to work it. Which wasn't the plan when I first started. But it is the nature of COVID, the nature of the number of games we play, it is about managing the workload of the squad," Dravid said on Star Sports ahead of the start of India's 5th T20I against South Africa in Bengaluru on Sunday (June 19)

"Few changes in captaincy means I have had to work with quite a few people over the last few months which in itself has been challenging but great fun too. It's good a lot of guys have got to lead the team and given us the opportunity to create leaders in the group," he added.

While Rishabh Pant is leading the side in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa after Rohit was rested and KL Rahul got injured ahead of the series-opener, Dravid had worked with Kohli during the South Africa Test series before Rahul led the side in his absence.

Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane also led the team in a Test match against New Zealand last year in the absence of both Kohli and Rohit while Dravid had also worked with Shikhar Dhawan during India's tour of Sri Lanka last year before being appointed as India's head coach permanently.

India are currently taking on South Africa in a five-match T20I series at home which is locked at 1-1 after the hosts defeated the Proteas in back-to-back matches following two losses on the trot in the first two games. India will be hoping to clinch the series by winning their third game on the bounce when they take on South Africa in the 5th T20I on Sunday.

'Wasn't the plan': Rahul Dravid opens up on working with 6 different captains as India head coach

On Wednesday (June 15), Hardik Pandya was named as India's captain for their upcoming two-match T20I series versus Ireland, in Dublin. Thus, Hardik will get a chance to lead India for the first time as he has been rightly rewarded for his maiden stint as an IPL skipper in the 15th season, where he led debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to the championship.

Thus, Hardik joins the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah who are among the younger lot being considered for India captain after Rohit Sharma's stint is over. Ahead of Hardik's captaincy stint for India, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has picked him as the next white-ball captain after Rohit. In addition, Jaffer wants Hardik to be India's first choice vice-captain in the shorter formats, instead of KL Rahul.

“He deserves it. Going forward, Indian selectors should look at him seriously for leading in white ball cricket. Especially if Rohit Sharma is not available, Hardik Pandya should be the first choice in my opinion. The way he led in the IPL, the way his performances came through, he is somebody who relishes that job. Going forward he is probably my number one choice after Rohit Sharma,” said Jaffer on ESPNCricinfo.

“If Rohit is playing, I would like Hardik to be the vice-captain in white ball cricket. He is somebody who enjoys their job and gets the best out of himself and others. Everybody feels at home and he gets the best out of the other players. So he is my next in line after Rohit Sharma,” added Jaffer.

'He's my next captain in-line after Rohit Sharma in white-ball formats': Wasim Jaffer on star India player

On Wednesday evening (June 15), the BCCI selection committee announced a 17-member Team India squad for the forthcoming two T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin. With regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and many other white-ball regulars to be in England to prepare for the one-off Test, Hardik Pandya has been named as the Indian captain for the Ireland series.

Hardik will, thus, get a chance to lead India for the first time ever. In IPL 2022, the talented all-rounder had led the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden championship and led with example with both bat and ball, ending with 487 runs and eight wickets (three of them coming in the final). Thus, a lot is expected from Hardik the captain, who will have Bhuvneshwar Kumar as his deputy for the Ireland tour.

After his appointment, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra reacted to the new development and lauded Hardik. "Rise and rise of Hardik Pandya. Even though he’s captained only one seasonI feel that he’s the most mature captain amongst the younger lot of contenders. Here’s wishing him all the very best for the first assignment for Team India," Chopra said exclusively on the Koo app.

While Hardik hasn't led India when compared to some other youngsters such as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, he has operated in a much better wat than them during IPL 15. Hence, a lot is expected of him.

KL Rahul has been in form for Team India, and also in the IPL, whereas he has also raised his stature by becoming Rohit Sharma's deputy across formats since the start of the year. When the Rohit Sharma-less Indian T20I squad was announced by the BCCI, for the ongoing home series versus South Africa, Rahul was set to lead India for the first in the shortest format.

The obvious implication of the overseas treatment is that the Indian vice-captain Rahul will miss the England tour, where Rohit & Co. are set to play the rescheduled fifth and final Test, from last year's series, and three T20Is and ODIs each. The tour will kick off with the one-off Test, in Edgbaston, on July 01 whereas the white-ball matches will take place from July 07-17. In Rahul's absence, the Indian selectors will have to name Rohit's deputy and there are high chances that the post will go to pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has served as the vice-captain earlier in Rahul or Rohit's absence.

Rahul's absence will surely hurt the visitors, who also was their second-highest run-getter (third overall) in the four Tests -- of the five-match series -- played between India and hosts England last year.

KL Rahul was ruled out of the ongoing India-South Africa T20Is at home. Rahul was set to lead India for the first time in the shortest format of the game, in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma. However, the talented 30-year-old suffered a huge setback as a groin injury led to his omission from the home series.

While a second-stringed Indian team is set to travel to Ireland for two T20Is, Rahul is expected to be part of the Rohit Sharma-led red-ball side ahead of their one-off Test versus hosts England, starting on July 1. Nonetheless, a report in Cricbuzz recently stated that the vice-captain Rahul has been ruled out of the England Test. Now, another report has emerged saying that he remains in contention but will have to undergo a fitness test on Saturday (June 18).

As per Insidesport.in, Rahul will go through a fitness test later this week and will board the plane to the UK if he is deemed fit. “It’s a slow process. His recovery has been slow and that’s not a good sign. We have 3-4 days before the second batch leaves. There will be a light fitness test on Saturday. If he clears that, he will board the flight. If he doesn’t, we will wait for him to continue recovery process. He is certainly not ruled out at this stage,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by InsideSport.

Rahul had been in sublime form during the five-match Test series versus England in 2021. The right-handed opener was India's third-highest run-scorer (315 runs with a hundred and fifty each) before the Covid-19 virus halted the series before the fifth and final Test, which will now be played in Edgbaston, followed by six white-ball matches from July 07-17.

Vice-captain KL Rahul set to undergo fitness test on June 18 for one-off red-ball match vs England: Report

Rishabh Pant-led India came to the second T20I, of the five-match series, versus South Africa with an aim to level the scoreline after a loss in the first encounter. However, the script remained the same for the home side as they conceded the game by four wickets at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on Sunday evening (June 12).

Being asked to bat first, India rode on Ishan Kishan's 34, Shreyas Iyer's 40 and Dinesh Karthik's unbeaten 30 to post a moderate 148-6 in 20 overs on a difficult batting track. In reply, Temba Bavuma-led SA reached the target in 18.2 overs courtesy of Heinrich Klaasen's rapid 81. With the series now on the line, as Proteas are one win away from taking an unassailable lead, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Rahul Dravid-led thinktank to include Jammu & Kashmir pacer Umran Malik in the playing XI for the decisive third T20I.

"The first player I got excited to see was Sachin Tendulkar. The second player is Umran Malik." Gavaskar said after the match. "He should play," Gavaskar added.

Talking about the 22-year-old Umran, he impressed one and all in his first full IPL season which was held recently. Playing for the one-time winners Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Umran churned out as many as 22 wickets and was also able to clock over 150kph at regular intervals. Thus, Gavaskar feels his extra pace will come in handy for Pant & Co., who have struggled for wickets in the middle overs. For the unversed, Umran was used extensively in the middle overs by SRH and he was quite successful in that phase of the game for the franchise in IPL 2022. Thus, he can be a valuable addition.

The third T20I will be held in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday evening (June 13).

'He should play': Sunil Gavaskar urges India to play Umran Malik in 3rd T20I with series on the line vs SA

Rishabh Pant-led India faced South Africa in the five-match T20I series opener in New Delhi, India on Thursday evening (June 09). In the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, vice-captain KL Rahul, former skipper Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and some other key players, Pant & Co. couldn't help India achieve a world record of most successive T20I wins (13) courtesy of David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen's fifties in a run-fest in New Delhi, India.

Being asked to bat first, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, openers Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad took their chances and were lucky enough initially -- being rewarded for their positive intent -- as they put on a 57-run opening stand.

Against the run of play, Ruturaj fell but Ishan continued and hammered the bowlers whereas No. 3 batter Shreyas Iyer took on Tabraiz Shamsi. While Ishan fell for a 48-ball 76, and Iyer followed suit, Pant and Hardik Pandya's cameos (12-ball 31*) took India to 211-4, the highest T20I score at the venue.

In reply, South Africa started with some good strokes before skipper Temba Bavuma fell to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Quinton de Kock got a start whereas pinch-hitter Dwaine Pretorius went hard from his end as SA remained in the hunt.

Harshal Patel's change of pace completely outfoxed Pretorius (13-ball 29) as the onus quickly fell on in-form finisher David Miller. He was assisted by Rassie van der Dussen (75 not out), who wasn't at his best, but stood firm with Miller to keep Proteas alive.

Miller (unbeaten 64) got more than he could have asked for from Rassie, who was struggling in the middle, as the latter came to his own and smashed Harshal Patel in the 17th over, accumulating 22 runs (all in boundaries). From thereon, there was no looking back for the Proteas who rode on Miller-Rassie's unbroken 131-run fourth-wicket stand. The Harshal over sealed the deal for the visitors and they also prevented India from achieving a world record with the most successive T20I victories. In addition, Bavuma & Co. recorded their highest successful run-chase ever.

Thus, the trio of Afghanistan, Romania and India enjoyed a 12-match winning streak, however, the latter couldn't create history on Thursday evening.

1st T20I: David Miller, Rassie van der Dussen prevent India from achieving world record, SA win by 7 wickets

Ishan Kishan slammed a sensational half-century as India locked horns with South Africa in the 1st T20I at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday (June 09). Asked to bat first after losing the toss in the series-opener, Ishan and his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad got India off to a flying start and added 57 runs for the first wicket. The duo might not have gotten a chance to open in the first game had it not been for an injury to KL Rahul.

India are missing both Rahul and skipper Rohit Sharma in the ongoing five-match T20I series against the Proteas allowing Ishan to open with Gaikwad. While there is no denying the intense competition as far as opening slots are considered in the Indian team, many believe Kishan should be given more chances at the top.

The young explosive left-hander has the ability to take on the bowlers from the word go and can single-handedly destroy bowling attacks on his day. On Thursday, Kishan was in fine form once again as he took the South Africa bowlers to the cleaners wen route to his 48-ball 76 laced with 11 fours and 3 sixes.

The young southpaw was asked if he believes he should be getting regular chances to open for the Indian team going forward. Kishan said he cannot ask the likes of Rohit and Rahul to drop themselves to let him play as an opener for the Men in Blue in T20Is. Kishan said he would like to make the most of opportunities that come his way and leave the rest to the coaches and the Indian team management.

India rode on Kishan's 48-ball 76 and crucial knocks from the likes of skipper Rishabh Pant (29 off 16), Shreyas Iyer (36 off 27) and Hardik Pandya (31 off 12) to post a strong total of 211 runs on the board, batting first. However, South Arica managed to chase down the target comfortably to win the game by seven wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Can't ask Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul to drop themselves to make me play in Team India: Ishan Kishan

Hardik Pandya's captaincy stocks have risen ever since he impressed one and all with his leadership qualities in the IPL 2022 edition. In what was the star all-rounder's first-ever season as captain, the 28-year-old made a huge mark by leading the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden title, beating Rajasthan Royasl (RR) with ease in the final.

Hardik's calm and composed nature on the field, leading the charge in all departments despite additional responsibility and some tactical decisions stood out as many former cricketers and experts of the game are impressed with his game-reading abilities as captain. Ahead of the India-South Africa T20Is, where Hardik has been promoted as the vice-captain after Rishabh Pant replaced an injured KL Rahul to become the new stand-in skipper, former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh made a huge claim on Hardik.

"One of the biggest revelations in this year's IPL was the advent of Hardik Pandya as the skipper of the Gujarat Titans and the way he led the team from the front to win the coveted title is definitely praiseworthy. His intent and positive captaincy are signs that he can lead Team India in the future," Harbhajan told PTI in an interview.

Before the SA series opener, head coach Rahul Dravid had also lauded Hardik's captaincy in IPL 15. He told the reporters, "I just met Hardik a couple of hours ago. For the guys who played the final, we gave them an extra day off. But I think his leadership was very impressive right through the IPL. He performed very well. In the sense, you don't have to be designated as a leader to be part of any leadership group. It's not only about Hardik being designated in a position. At this point in time, it's really about it's good from our perspective that he has started bowling again. We know what that does for us, and what his bowling can add to our depth."

'He can lead Team India in future' - Harbhajan Singh lavishes praise on Hardik Pandya's leadership

Injury-hit Team India will face Temba Bavuma-led South Africa in the series opener of the five-match T20Is at home on Thursday evening (June 09), in New Delhi, India. On Wednesday evening (June 08), news broke out that stand-in captain KL Rahul has been injured, along with wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, hence, Rishabh Pant will lead India in the five T20Is versus the Proteas.

For the unversed, Pant was already named the captain when the BCCI selection committee named a Rohit Sharma-less Indian squad for the SA T20Is. With big names such as Rohit, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah rested, and now with Rahul's absence, Pant has a huge task to keep India's winning run intact in the shortest format (12), who are one victory away from creating a new world record of most successive T20I wins.

As soon as Pant will enter the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi for the coin toss with Bavuma, he will join an elite list by going past former captains Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. Suresh Raina, the former all-rounder, is the youngest ever Indian captain in men's T20Is (23 years and 197 days), hence, Pant is all set to join him at the second spot. The 24-year-old Pant will then be followed by MS Dhoni (who captained in T20Is at 26), Virender Sehwag (who was 28 when he led India in their first-ever T20I in 2006) and Virat.

India vs SA: Captain Rishabh Pant set to join elite list during 1st T20I, to go past Virat Kohli & MS Dhoni

India and South Africa will lock horns with each other in what is expected to be a mouth-watering five-match T20I series with the opening game to be played on Thursday evening (June 09). While Temba Bavuma-led Proteas are a strong squad, India have been hit with several injury concerns after their famed trio -- regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah -- were rested.

Ahead of the first T20I, news broke out from the Indian camp that regular vice-captain and stand-in skipper KL Rahul has been injured, along with wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Hence, Rishabh Pant is all set to don the captain's hat for the first time ever for Team India whereas the 28-year-old IPL-winning skipper Hardik Pandya will be his deputy for the series. Thus, India have lots riding on them to beat Proteas and also keep their unbeaten streak alive in the shortest format (currently at 12). If India win the series opener, they will create a world record of winning the most consecutive T20Is.

Match prediction for India vs SA 1st T20I: The sweltering heat of a typical June afternoon is set to trouble players from both sides. While the majority of them have played IPL 2022, the heat and humidity has just worsened in the national capital. Dew is, however, expected in the evening game and, hence, both sides' captains will prefer batting second, which has become a trend in the shortest format.

For India, they will have some issues finalising their playing XI after injuries to Rahul and Kuldeep. Nonetheless, they still have a lot of options, especially in bowling, but it will be interesting to see the all-rounders and bowlers who get the nod. India vs South Africa 1st T20I: Match prediction and likely playing XIs of both teams

Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant was in for a surprise on Wednesday (June 08) as he was named captain of the Indian cricket team just a day ahead of the start of the T20I series against South Africa at home. KL Rahul had been appointed as the captain of the side in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma. However, Rahul was ruled out of the five-match series due to an injury on Wednesday paving way for Pant to be named captain.

Pant, who is part of the Indian team's leadership group under captain Rohit, will now geat a chance to lead the team for the first tim in his career. Pant has never captained the Indian team but has been leading the Delhi Capitals (DC) for the past two seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has significant experience behind his back.

Reacting to his appointment as captain of the Indian team, Pant said it was a good feeling overall but he would have liked the announcement to have come under better circumstances. Rahul along with spinner Kuldeep Yadav have been ruled out of the series due to injuries which is a huge blow for the Indian team ahead of the T20I series against the Proteas.

“It is a very good feeling, did not come under very good circumstances but at the same time I am feeling happy. I would like to thank the BCCI for giving me this opportunity to lead the Indian side. I will try to make the most out of it. Thank you to all my well-wishers for supporting me in my journey through the thick and thin of my cricketing career. I will look to make it a base and keep improving and keep making my life better and better each and every day," Pant said during a press conference ahead of the first ODI on Wednesday.

With Rahul no more in the scheme of things, India have been left with fewer options on top of the order. While Shikhar Dhawan is not part of the squad, Rohit has been rested and Rahul is now ruled out leaving India with only two specialist openers in Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Venkatesh Iyer didn't have a great season with KKR in IPL 2022 as an opener and is unlikely to get a chance at the top against the Proteas. When asked about the change in the batting order in Rahul's absence, Pant admitted India do not have many options at the top and it remains to be seen what combination will be the best for the hosts.

“I think there would not be much change in the batting order as KL would have opened. We do not have many openers, we will discuss about it after some time," said Pant.

The stand-in skipper also hinted at a change in India's strategy and approach as far as T20 cricket is concerned. Pant said the hosts are looking to play a different brand of cricket with the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia not far away now.

“I think as a team we have thought about certain goals we want to achieve as a team. At the end, we have the World Cup at the back of our head and we are preparing for that. In the coming days, you will see there will be changes and how we play cricket I guess," Pant added.

'Didn't come under very good circumstances': Rishabh Pant on captaining India for the first time in his career

India have been handed a massive blow ahead of the start of the T20I series against South Africa as captain KL Rahul has been ruled out due to an injury. Along with Rahul, spinner Kuldeep Yadav has also been ruled out of the five-match series owing to an injury. Rahul was supposed to lead the team in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for the series.

However, with an injury ruling him out, Rishabh Pant will now replace him as captain for the five T20Is. This will be the first time Pant will captain the Indian team having led Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the last two seasons. Both Pant and Rahul remain part of India's leadership group under regular captain Rohit.

BCCI confirmed the development on Wednesday and said star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be the vice-captain for the T20I series against South Africa. Hardik enjoyed a phenomenal campaign for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the recently-concluded IPL 2022 by leading them to their maiden title in their debut season.

BCCI confirmed that Rahul has injured his right groin while Kuldeep will miss out after getting hit on his right hand while batting in the nets on Tuesday (June 07). No replacements have been named yet for the duo.

Rishabh Pant to lead India in T20I series vs SA after KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav ruled out due to injury

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has lavished praise on head coach Rahul Dravid ahead of the India-South Africa T20Is, which gets underway on June 09. Pathan, who has played under Dravid's captaincy, hailed The Wall for his knack for being crystal clear with his players in terms of what he wants from them.

In this regard, Pathan feels Dravid must have given role clarity to a new-looking Indian squad which is gearing up to face Temba Bavuma-led Proteas in the five-match T20I series at home and must have communicated what he wants from KL Rahul the batter and captain (in regular skipper Rohit Sharma's absence).

Speaking on Star Sports, Irfan said, "It is extremely necessary and the clarity would have been given. I have been saying that since Rahul Dravid has come as a coach, I have played under his captaincy, his biggest thing is the clarity of role.

“It is not that the earlier coaches have not done that, Ravi Shastri was there and Virat Kohli was captaining, but he (Dravid) will take it one step ahead. I have full belief the communication would have happened and KL Rahul would have been told that if he is the captain, it means he is the next in line,” he further added.

KL Rahul would've been told he's next-in-line: Irfan Pathan on Rahul Dravid's communication with India captain

Team India already have one eye on the forthcoming T20 World Cup, set to be held in Australia later this year, after their disastrous run in the last year's edition. Ahead of the showpiece event, former Indian captain, Kapil Dev slammed India's top order's T20 batting approach and asked them to strike at a higher rate.

The 1983 World Cup-winning skipper Kapil feels that Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli have the potential to go at a strike rate of 150-160, however, they restrict themselves and often get out while accelerating at the latter half of the innings, putting pressure on the rest of the batters. Kapil also went on to add that if they can't change their approach in a fast-moving game, they should be replaced by fresh faces.

"They have a big reputation and there's huge pressure on them, which shouldn't be the case. You have to play fearless cricket. All of these are players who can hit at a strike rate of 150-160. Whenever we need them to score runs, they all get out. When it is time to take off (in the innings), they are out. And that adds to pressure. Either you play an anchor or you play striker,” said Kapil on the Youtube channel Uncut.

Kapil stressed on Rahul and said, "When you talk about KL Rahul, if the team tells him to play the entire 20 overs and you come back with a score of, say 60 not out, you're not doing justice to your team." He added, "

“I think the approach needs to change. And if it doesn't, you have to change the players. A big player is expected to make a big impact. Having a big reputation is not enough, you also have to deliver great performances."

At present, a second-stringed Rahul-led India are gearing up for the home T20Is versus South Africa, starting on June 09. Rohit and Virat have been rested and will return to action during the one-off Test versus England, on July 01.

When we need them to score runs, they get out: Kapil Dev on India's top order's T20 batting approach

India have begun their preparations for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home. KL Rahul will lead the Indian team in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma in the five-match series against the Proteas. Several youngsters who impressed in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 have made the cut into the squad and will be eager to perform for the Men in Blue.

The five-match series against South Africa is scheduled to get underway from June 09 at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi. Each member of the Indian squad was in action during IPL 2022 which concluded on May 29 and got a much-deserved break before returning for national duty this month.

Apart from skipper Rohit, senior players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have also been rested from the squad and will return to action in the one-off Test against England next month. In their absence, it will be a litmus test for Rahul as captain in charge of a young team.

A 'one in 15 million' event, as described UK's air traffic control provider NATS, caused the air traffic meltdown last week. The chief of NATS cited a flight plan with two identically named markers as reason for the air-traffic chaos.

On August 28, 1500 flights were cancelled as a result of which thousands of passengers were stranded abroad for days. The disturbance came during one of the busiest travel periods of the summer.

"This was a one in 15 million chance," NATS CEO Martin Rolfe told the BBC.

"We've processed 15 million flight plans with this system up until this point and never seen this before."

A few days ago Rolfe said that the problem would not be repeated.

On Wednesday, NATS published a report that said that the flight plan included two identically named but separate waypoint markers outside UK airspace, which forced the system to enter fail-safe mode.

"In these circumstances, the system could not reject the flight plan without a clear understanding of what possible impact it may have had. Nor could it be allowed through and risk presenting air traffic controllers with incorrect safety-critical information," NATS said.

It said that the flight plan was complying with Eurocontrol's flight planning distribution system.

UK's Civil Aviation Regulator (CAA) has said that it will review circumstances surrounding the failure.

"If there is evidence to suggest NATS may have breached its statutory and licensing obligations we will consider whether any further action is necessary," Rob Bishton, Joint-Interim Chief Executive at the UK's CAA, said in a statement.

This may mean that NATS would end up footing some of the bill for the chaos that ensued last week.

According IATA, the global airline group, the episode is likely to cost airlines up to 100 million pounds ($126 million) as travellers whose flights were cancelled would claim back expenses for the hotels or the tickets.

Britain-based airline easyJet said the NATS report left some questions unanswered. It added that though it welcomed the review, it believed a more wide-ranging examination of resources and IT systems was necessary.

"A full independent and wide-ranging review of NATS is needed to ensure it is fit for purpose today and in the future," easyJet said.

India vs SA, T20Is: 'He'll do very well' - Suresh Raina makes bold prediction for star Indian batter

KL Rahul was criticised by many for failing to change gears in time during his side Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)'s clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Eliminator of the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Chasing a big target of 208 runs, Rahul scored 79 off 58 balls for LSG but failed to get them over the line as they lost the game by 14 runs.

While his skills and talent is there to see for everyone, Rahul didn't quite manage to make the best use of his potential for LSG in IPL 2022. He was often scrutinised for being too slow in his approach and was also slammed by fans for not accelerating his strike rate despite the team being under pressure.

Rahul had yet another prolific season with the bat for LSG, amassing 616 runs in 15 matches for his team but failed to inspire them to their maiden title. LSG bowed out of the tournament after losing against RCB in the Eliminator. Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif recently shared his views on Rahul's batting.

Latif said there is no doubt that Rahul is a fine batter and a special player but he is not in the same league as the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The former Pakistan skipper explained that Rahul plays a lot of dot balls and needs to work on that to improve his game.

"Wasn't he playing for Punjab Kings before this? He used to bat till the 15th-18th over, while Glenn Maxwell hardly faced 2 balls. The team did not qualify. Even Gayle was there but he played in the end. See, there is no doubt that KL Rahul is a fine player, and the pitches he played on and scored hundreds were the same where Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan struggled. Sometimes when an opener bats, he thinks it is his responsibility to bat through," Latif said on his YouTube channel 'Caught Behind'.

"Rahul is not like Rohit Sharma. Rohit and Kohli belong to a different league, but Rahul too is a special player. Having said that he needs to improve a little. He plays a few too many dot balls for his liking. Since the runs he scores are big, the balls faced a lot too. When he was playing for Punjab, I noticed the same," the former Pakistan skipper added.

Rahul has been one of the most consistent performers with the willow in the IPL over the last few seasons. He was the highest run-getter in the league in IPL 2020 before finishing third on the list in IPL 2021 last year. He once again went past the 600-run mark this season to continue his purple patch. However, his efforts were not enough to take his side to the final of the season.

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen picked his best XI from the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. It was a memorable season with debutants Gujarat Titans getting crowned as champions after scripting a fairytale run in their debut campaign in the league. The tournament saw a number of youngsters rise to the occasion once again while some of the experienced campaigners continued their impressive run for their respective teams.

Pietersen named Hardik Pandya the captain of his IPL 2022 XI after the star all-rounder led the Titans to their maiden title triumph in style. Hardik led from the front and contributed with both the bat and the ball to help his side dominate the proceedings throughout the season. He scored 487 runs in 15 matches and also picked up 8 wickets, including a match-winning performance in the final against the Rajasthan Royals.

Pietersen picked Jos Buttler and Quinton de Kock as the two openers in his side. Buttler had a fabulous season finishing as the highest run-getter in IPL 2022 with a staggering 863 runs while De Kock too was consistent with the willow and notched up 508 runs in 15 matches. Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul, who played as an opener, was picked at no.3 by Pietersen.

"Hit 140* as he and KL Rahul batted the entire 20 overs unbeaten against KKR. That innings, combined with some other solid contributions, means he warrants a place in this team", the former England captain said on Betway explaining the reason behind keeping Rahul at 3.

While there were other popular picks like David Miller and Liam Livingstone in his best XI, Pietersen also had a surprising inclusion in the form of R Ashwin. He snubbed GT spinner Rashid Khan, who picked up 19 wickets at a brilliant economy of 6.59 to keep Ashwin in the side.

"Averaging over 27 with the bat and taking 12 wickets is a great effort. That all-round output means that this was a fine campaign," said Pietersen on Ashwin's selection. He completed his bowling attack with the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, who was the highest wicket-taker of the season, Umran Malik and Josh Hazlewood.

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) concluded recently with Gujarat Titans (GT) lifting the elusive trophy for the first time in their debut campaign. The debutants played some impressive cricket throughout the tournament and emerged as favourites for the title after dominating the proceedings in the league stage. They were one of the most consistent teams during the league stage and deservingly went on to lift the trophy capping off a stunning debut campaign.

Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets in the final on Sunday (May 29) to script history by becoming only the second team to win the IPL in their debut season. From skipper Hardik Pandya to the likes of David Miller and Rashid Khan, several players stepped up for the Titans across the season and won them a few games from almost improbable situations.

Sachin Tendulkar named his best XI from IPL 2022 and picked Hardik as the captain of his side after the Gujarat Titans skipper showed excellent leadership skills this season to inspire his side to their maiden title triumph. The Master Blaster also picked both Miller and Rashid in his team of the tournament.

The cricket legend picked Shikhar Dhawan and Jos Buttler as the two openers in his team. While Dhawan continued his prolific run with the bat for Punjab Kings, amassing 460 runs from 14 matches, Buttle enjoyed a stunning campaign for Rajasthan Royals. The English opener amassed a staggering 863 runs in 17 games and finished as the highest run-getter of the season.

"I would want a left-hand, right-hand combination and hence I am going to play Shikhar Dhawan. He accelerates beautifully and keeps rotating the strike. "One need not discuss who Dhawan's opening partner would be. Jos Buttler - what a season he has had, just fabulous. When Buttler gets going, no one can match him," Tendulkar said in a video on his YouTube channel as he picked his best XI from IPL 2022.

Snubbing superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who both had average seasons with their respective teams, Tendulkar picked Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul at number 3 and Hardik at number 4. In the middle order, Tendulkar went with the in-form Miller, the dangerous Liam Livingstone and Dinesh Karthik, who was arguably the best finisher in the tournament.

In his bowling attack, the Master Blaster picked Rashid and Yuzvendra Chahal as the two spinners while Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah were the two pacers in his best XI from the tournament. Chahal was the highest wicket-taker of IPL 2022 with 27 scalps to his name.

"I would have Rashid as he is a dangerous batter and, with the ball, he gets the breakthroughs in the middle overs. His success rate is very high. Chahal was the highest wicket-taker. He always thinks about outsmarting batters," said Sachin.
