Peddi row: Why Janhvi Kapoor’s hypersexualisation and the post-release fix feel like a calculated marketing move

Ram Charan‘s latest release Peddi is in the news not for the film’s plot or execution but for hypersexualising the film’s leading heroine, Janhvi Kapoor. While the film’s director Buchi Babu Sana has issued an apology and assured fans that the objectionable shots will be edited out, the row has also led to some questioning Janhvi and why she did not object to the shots during the filming itself. Now, her make-up artist has come out in support of the star and shared a post that Janhvi had actually objected to certain shots in the film.

Janhvi Kapoor's make-up artist defends her amid Peddi criticism

Amid the ongoing criticism surrounding the portrayal of Janhvi's character in Peddi, her make-up artist, Savleen Kaur Manchanda, spoke in defence of the actress. Taking to Instagram stories on Saturday, Savleen wrote, "It is easy to blame an actress for the roles she takes, but the actual timeline tells a different story. Reports show that Janhvi Kapoor explicitly questioned these shots during post-production, a boundary that perfectly mirrors her recent public stance against the industry's habit of oversexualizing women."

The post further claimed that Janhvi had objected to the camera angles used in some scenes. It stated, "She drew a professional line, but the final edit kept the footage anyway. This isn't a case of an actress failing to stand up for herself. It is a director choosing to ignore a boundary because he decided her consent mattered less than his box office numbers."

More about the Peddi controversy

Screenshots of Janhvi's text messages have been shared by various fan clubs in recent days. The actress seems to have texted someone about how she objected to the way she was being filmed.

Also read: 'Decided to make changes': Peddi director Buchi Babu Sana issues apology over Janhvi Kapoor’s ‘hypersexualised’ scenes

One of the most widely circulated screenshots is dated 30 October. In the conversation, Janhvi allegedly claimed that she had specifically asked for certain camera angles not to be used during filming. “I told him no b**b and waist shots. Many pointed to sequences that focus heavily on her body rather than establishing her as a character. Another scene that came under scrutiny involves Peddi expressing his desire to be with Achiyyamma despite her lack of interest. Another scene showed him kissing her during a power cut without her consent.

As controversy around Janhvi Kapoor's sexualised depiction in Peddi continues, her make-up artist has spoken out in defence of the actress. Leaked chats on social media have also revealed that the star had raised objections but was ignored.

Janhvi Kapoor's make-up artist defends her amid Peddi criticism Amid the ongoing criticism surrounding the portrayal of Janhvi's character in Peddi, her make-up artist, Savleen Kaur Manchanda, spoke in defence of the actress. Taking to Instagram stories on Saturday, Savleen wrote, "It is easy to blame an actress for the roles she takes, but the actual timeline tells a different story. Reports show that Janhvi Kapoor explicitly questioned these shots during post-production, a boundary that perfectly mirrors her recent public stance against the industry's habit of oversexualizing women." The post further claimed that Janhvi had objected to the camera angles used in some scenes. It stated, "She drew a professional line, but the final edit kept the footage anyway. This isn't a case of an actress failing to stand up for herself. It is a director choosing to ignore a boundary because he decided her consent mattered less than his box office numbers." More about the Peddi controversy Screenshots of Janhvi's text messages have been shared by various fan clubs in recent days. The actress seems to have texted someone about how she objected to the way she was being filmed. And Ram sir is so sweet he also yelled at him and said, you will not take such angles of her ever again. So he got upset,” Janhvi wrote. The actor has not publicly reacted to the criticism so far.

Bridging tradition and modernity

The kurti is the attire worn by the women of Bollywood and is a tightrope walker between tradition and modernity. In fact, the silhouette of the kurti provides ample opportunities to work with prints, lengths, layering, and texturing while retaining an Indian essence.

Also read: Nupur Sanon-Stebin Ben: Salman Khan blesses newlyweds at Mumbai reception. Watch

In some urban storylines, the kurti came to represent a design solution for characters leading their lives in the modern world while also remaining grounded in their culture. This also relates to the manner in which many Indian women in today’s world like to wear their clothes, blending their heritage with the latest fashion trends.

Embodiment of effortless Indian chic

In contrast, “extremely styled” costumes can’t compare to this, as they somehow dwarf the wearer. The essence of “kurti” lies in subtlety, although it has managed to convey “individuality without excess, style without strain” on screen, which has, in turn, made this attire a staple of Bollywood for smart, independent, and earthy characters.

Why is this trend growing?

Speaking about the influence from B-Town is also substantial, according to Mr Anuj Mundhra, Founder, Chairman & Managing Director, Nandani Creation Limited (Brand: Jaipur Kurti) , “Bollywood has changed the perception about wearing kurtis with western accessories like jeans or jackets. Today’s youth finds these outfits more relatable. The jeans and kurti trend has completely changed the perception about middle-aged outfits and transformed them into trendy and modern wear for everyday use.”

Also read: Mattel unveils first Barbie on the Autism Spectrum featuring AAC tools

These insights explain why kurtis are now being embraced more widely in contemporary wardrobes. The eclectic orders of many fashion designers is driven by demand for the new modern wardrobe, with kurtis being in the top spot. Their comfortable, relaxed fit aligns perfectly with current lifestyle needs, while sustainable fabrics and modern cuts further enhance their appeal.

Mr. Mundhra adds, “What I find most interesting is the normalization of Kurtis as everyday wear. From travel and coffee runs to casual meet-ups, the styling of kurtis by celebrities makes ethnic fashion feel accessible and more relatable.”

The legacy of cinema on closets

As the film fashion trend filters down, the impact of the film journey of the kurti is reflected in the manner in which the garment is being worn outside the film industry as well. Right from the workplace to travel attire, the impact of the film industry, in the form of the Bollywood film, is such that it not only featured the kurti but also repositioned its utility in the contemporary Indian wardrobe.

Beyond ethnic! How kurti became Bollywood’s go-to symbol of effortless Indian style

Bollywood remains more than just entertainment, as reflected in its ability to function as a mirror to the cultural sensibilities of India, its penchant for reinventing the many wardrobe staples that the industry subscribes to, and, in the process, its ability to turn the kurti into the signifier of Indian understated elegance. This signifier of Indian understated elegance, in turn, extends its boundaries to the Indian indie scene. From traditional attire to everyday expression The kurti was traditionally known to belong to the category of region-specific attire for daily use and not to the glamour attire category. This changed with the intervention of the Bollywood industry, which brought the kurti within the realm of everyday situations like college campuses, office spaces, cafes, or homes. Instead of being portrayed as formal attire, it was showcased as a part of daily attire. Because of this, the kurti began to be recognised not as ‘ethnic wear’ for times past, but as an all-purpose article of clothing that integrates perfectly into contemporary lifestyles. The voice of comfort on screen Comfort is perhaps the single largest reason why the kurti has become a staple of Bollywood cinema. With a shift towards realism in the types of stories told on screen, the clothing worn by characters reflects this shift as well. The kurti is a clothing item which provides a strong visual vocabulary that talks about ease and realism. Whether wearing the kurti with jeans, palazzo pants or churidars, the garment symbolized effortless poise.

Beyond celluloid, Bollywood and its stars are trendsetters when it comes to fashion. Whatever the ladies of B-town wore became the go-to look for girls in the common crowd. And among many styles, the one look that's seen a major transformation in recent years is the Kurti.

Prabhas-Malavika Mohanan to Ram Charan-Janhvi Kapoor: Fresh pairings to watch out for in 2026

Sometimes the movie is nothing but an extended version of a trailer. Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor's Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is out in the theatres, and before the world watches, the critics have been shown the film. Sometimes we love a movie, other times we hate it, and then there are some films, we are sceptical about. But Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari doesn’t land in any of these aforementioned categories. It’s torturous, overdramatic, and all things nonsense.

It makes you think and question again what made them release this in the theatre. The world now has a medium called OTT, which is best for films like this, where you can watch, pause, watch again, pause again, and even end the movie whenever you want. While the option to step out of the theatre is still available, the price you pay to watch this film makes the experience a struggle throughout.

What is Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari about?

Uff the plot! It was the most juvenile thing that I had watched this year. The movie starts with a dialogue from SS Rajamouli's Baahubali, and people who had watched Badrinath Ki Dulhania get the gist that it's Varun's entry. Okay, so Dhawan plays the role of Sunny Sanskari, who is head over heels in love with Ananya (Sanya Malhotra). They have been dating for over two years now. She's returning from Italy, and Sunny proposes to her in Baahubali style. Why? Because it's Ananya's favourite film. However, his heart breaks when Ananya says no to his proposal and tells him about a new boy in life- Vikram Singh (Rohit Saraf) who is rich and oh-so-smart and obviously Ananya's choice. Sunny is now the heartbroken lover who is unable to move on. He, with the help of his best friend Bantu (Abhinav Sharma), gets to know about Vikram's love saga.

Much like Sunny and Ananya, Vikram has also been in a relationship with a school teacher, Tulsi (Janhvi). They both are in love, but Vikram refuses to marry her because his mother and brother don't like Tulsi. When these two heartbroken lovers meet, and Sunny persuades Tulsi to gate-crash their ex's wedding to gain their old lovers back.

Still from Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari

What breaks your heart the most?

I have always loved watching director Shashank Khaitan's films, be it Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania or Badrinath Ki Dulhania. From stories to heroes' buffoonery, songs and all the cringeworthy things that people do in love, Khaitan's films are mostly entertaining. However, this film is not one of them. It has the things that don't make you laugh; the over-dramatisation of the film bores you. Although the palette is very colourful, filled with designer clothes and everything nice, the story and actors fail to grip you on the screen.

It's a Bollywood lovey-dovey drama backed by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. The renowned director said in the recently released Aryan Khan's Ba***ds of Bollywood, that nobody makes love stories better than him. Yes, I agree too, howevere, Johar the producer has not backed a great love story this time around.

The story of the movie didn't even look striking on paper, but it may have been discussed how they would fill all the holes with the dazzling presentation. But that didn't work. Varun has accurately tried to bring his unbeatable charm with his comic timing, and energy. But what can he do when his dialogues are not enough to make you laugh? In this movie, even Janhvi is not at her best. Varun and Janhvi were the focus, so they got the best of all, and they did their best. But do only dance moves and a few lines make the movie watchable?

One scene in the film was so cringe that I wish it was not there at all. The scene post Holi party, where the lead cast Varun, Janhvi, Sanya and Rohit, are struggling to crawl as they are all drunk was so badly enacted. The scene has no feel; everything felt fabricated.

Rohit Saraf and Sanya Malhotra, great actors otherwise, get hardly any scope to perform in this film.

Maniesh Paul, as the wedding planner, was the most cartoonish character. But at least, he made me laugh through his dramatic performance. The lack in the script is covered well with some cheeky dialogues and well-dramatised monologues. Although Khaitan's rom-com fails to make a connection with the audience, you don't feel for the characters, the stories, and you don't even have any reaction to the climax, which has a cameo of Saraf's most popular co-star.

Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is an OTT film that you can pause, fast-forward, and re-watch anytime. But it's running in theatres across the country.

Directed by Shashank Khaitan, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is a movie loaded with star power, but it stumbles with a weak and juvenile script. The OTT-friendly movie is now available to watch in theatres.
