The amendments shall come into force on July 12, the date of the publication in the Official Gazette-- a move in anticipation of the speculated assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the Transaction of Business of the Government of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Rules, 2019 (hereinafter referred to as the principal rules), some rules have been inserted.&nbsp;

International Yoga Day is celebrated annually on June 21. This year, Srinagar will be hosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the celebrations with 3000-4000 people expected to attend the event at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).&nbsp;

Srinagar gears up for International Yoga Day Celebrations 2024

India strongly denounced the "unwarranted references" to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir made in a joint statement by China and Pakistan stating that both J&amp;K and Ladakh "will remain integral and inalienable parts" of the country.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a statement firmly made it clear that no country possessed the authority to comment on the status of Jammu and Kashmir.

"We have noted unwarranted references to the Union Territory of Jammu &amp; Kashmir in the joint statement between China and Pakistan of 07 June 2024. We categorically reject such references. Our position on the issue is consistent and well-known to the concerned parties. The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh have been, are and will always remain integral and inalienable parts of India. No other country has the locus standi to comment on the same," MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in response to media queries on references to Jammu and Kashmir in the China-Pakistan Joint Statement.

MEA's remarks came following a meeting between Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping in China where both the leaders also discussed the so-called China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through India's sovereign territory in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK).

"The Pakistani side briefed the Chinese side on the latest developments of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Two days after terrorists targeted a bus carrying pilgrims in Reasi and&nbsp;killed 10 aboard the vehicle, security forces on Tuesday evening (June 11), shot dead one terrorist in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The development comes amid a massive operation to neutralise terrorists from the region.

The terrorists hit Saida Sukhal village near Koota Mode in the Hiranagar sector on Tuesday evening, reported news agency PTI citing a police spokesperson.

The official said that in the subsequent search operation, one of the terrorists was shot dead.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that he was in touch with top civil and police officials in the district.

“I am in continuous online contact with DC (deputy commissioner) Kathua Sh Rakesh Minhas in the wake of the terrorist attack on a house in village Saida in Hiranagar sector close to the International Border," he said.

Mela Kheer Bhawani festival is scheduled to be held on June 12 and security has already been beefed up across the region. The meeting chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Police's IG also stressed on proper security arrangements for the Eid Ul Adha which is to be celebrated on June 17.

Meanwhile, Security forces have formed a total of 11 teams in Reasi after the terror attack that will investigate the case and will be working on two different axes.&nbsp;

The Jammu and Kashmir police have some leads and inputs that these teams are acting upon.

According to officials , half a dozen people have been detained for questioning in the case. The NIA team led by a DIG visited the area to take stock of the situation as well.

July 2017

On July 10, 2017, a bus carrying Amarnath Yatra Pilgrims was attacked in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. Seven pilgrims were killed in the attack while over a dozen were injured. Most of them belonged to the Gujarat state of India. The Jammu and Kashmir Police had said that the attack was carried out by terror outfit Lashkar Toiba.

July 2006

In 2006, one more attack took place in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district. A grenade was lobbed at a bus carrying Amarnath Pilgrims at Beehama area in Ganderbal resulting in injuring five pilgrims. The attack was not owned by any terror outfit.

July 2002

One of the biggest attacks on the Pilgrims took place in the year 2002. There were two attacks by the terror groups in 2002. The first attack took place on July 30 in Srinagar when a grenade was lobbed at a taxi carrying pilgrims. Two pilgrims lost their lives in this attack. Sources in the security forces say there is a high possibility of the same group involved in the Reasi terror attack. However, they have not officially confirmed the involvement of the same terrorists.&nbsp;

Abu Hamza, a 32-year-old Pakistani terrorist, has a bounty of one million Indian rupees on his head. He has been active in the Rajouri Poonch belt for the last two years.

Sources say it was a group of terrorists that infiltrated through the LoC and International Border in the Jammu region. Abu Hamza has been responsible for multiple attacks in the region in recent times.&nbsp;

Jammu and Kashmir Police had said that it was Abu Hamza who was responsible for the attack on the convoy of Indian Air Forces on May 4. He was the main attacker in the killing of a government employee by the name of Mohammad Razaq on April 22 in Rajouri.&nbsp;

He infiltrated with another terrorist by the name of Fauji who is said to be a former commando of the Pakistan army. India: 21 dead, more than 60 injured after bus falls into deep gorge in Jammu

The sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections witnessed the Anantnag-Rajouri Parliamentary Constituency (PC) scripting history as it recorded a voter turnout of 51.35 per cent, which was the highest in around last 35 years, i.e. since 1989.

This comprised of Anantnag, Poonch, Kulgam, and the districts of Rajouri and Shopian.

With this, all three parliamentary constituencies in the Kashmir valley, which include Srinagar, Baramulla and Anantnag-Rajouri, have recorded the highest voter turnouts in several decades, the Election Commission said in a press release.

Srinagar recorded a voter turnout of 38.49 per cent, Baramulla recorded 59.1 per cent, and Anantnag-Rajouri at 51.35 per cent.

The Commission led by CEC Rajiv Kumar and ECs Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu said, "People of Jammu and Kashmir, in the Anantnag Rajouri PC polling too, have reposed faith in democracy and proved naysayers wrong."

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Electoral Officer PK Pole said that the Union Territory recorded an overall voter turnout of 58 per cent.

"Today voting was held for the Anantnag-Rajouri Parliamentary Lok Sabha seat. A voter turnout of approximately 53 per cent was recorded. The highest voter turnout was recorded in the Surankote assembly segment while the lowest was recorded in the Kulgam Assembly segment," Pole told reporters.

"As far as the poll percentage is concerned in Union Territory... in 1989 the poll percentage was 29.93 per cent, in 1996, the poll percentage was 47.99 per cent, in 1998, it was 43.35 per cent, in 1999, it was 30.89 per cent, in 2004 it was 34.07 per cent, in 2009, it was 39. 04 per cent, in 2014 it was 49.58 per cent, and in 2019 it was 44. 07 per cent and it was 58 per cent in 2024," he added.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Rashtriya Janata Dal's Tej Pratap Yadav courted controversy on Sunday (May 5) for their remarks calling Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch attack "pre-planned".

Channi accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of plotting such stunts in order to win the elections.

"This is stuntbaazi. And not the (terror) attacks. When elections come, such stunts are done to make the BJP win. These are pre-planned attacks, there is no truth in them...," alleged the Congress leader while campaigning in Jalandhar, the seat from where he is contesting the polls.

"To kill people and to play with their bodies....BJP knows it...," he claimed.

He further went on to draw a parallel between the Poonch and the Pulwama attack&nbsp;that took place in 2019.

"These attacks are not really happening but just meant to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party... Whenever elections take place, such stunts are played – like it happened last time," he added in an apparent reference to the Pulwama incident.
