Pierce Brosnan as James Bond
Pierce Brosnan famously played the iconic British secret agent in four feature films, including GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day between 1995 and 2002. He is credited with successfully revitalising the franchise after a six-year gap following Timothy Dalton's tenure. The actor was replaced by Daniel Craig in the 2006 film Casino Royale. He went on to portray the role in four more films until 2021. Post Craig’s exit, the makers are still on the hunt for the next James Bond with several names being discussed as options. When The Times asked who would be the perfect choice to play Bond next, Brosnan said that “there are lots of good hats in the ring” and “lots of great actors” being considered. “I see it. I follow it. They could probably just go left-field and pick someone that none of us knows about," he said. When asked to reveal a name, the actor responded, “I wouldn't pick anyone. My wife told me not to say anything, and I've said too much. Because once I say something it goes [everywhere] and I get hanged.” Pierce Brosnan will next be seen in Chris Hemsworth-starrer Extraction 3.

Pierce Brosnan attended the US Open 2026 final on Sunday and stole the spotlight briefly as the camera gave a hat tip to beloved character James Bond, which the actor had played famously in the early 1990s.

I really think it's very sad: Former James Bond actress on Amazon takeover

Amazon MGM Studios will take creative control of the James Bond franchise following a landmark joint venture agreement with longtime producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the parties announced Thursday.
The deal is a major shift in the governance of one of cinema's most valuable properties, though Wilson and Broccoli's company will remain co-owners of the franchise through the new venture, a statement said.
The agreement coincides with the retirement of Wilson and Broccoli from active production of the Bond films.
Wilson, whose career with 007 spans nearly 60 years, said he would focus on "art and charitable projects," while Broccoli announced plans to pursue other ventures following the conclusion of "No Time to Die."

"We are honoured to continue this treasured heritage," said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, noting the franchise's six-decade impact on filmed entertainment.
The deal builds on Amazon's 2022 acquisition of MGM, which included distribution rights to Bond's extensive back catalog.

The new arrangement gives Amazon MGM Studios creative authority over future productions of the franchise, which has been closely guarded by the Broccoli family since Albert "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman first brought Ian Fleming's character to theaters.
Barbara Broccoli, who has worked with four different actors in the role of 007, described her tenure as "dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy" inherited from Cubby, her producer father.
Those four leading actors are Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, whom Broccoli played a direct role in casting.
The pair were steadfast in preserving the integrity of the James Bond character and brand and resisted spin-offs and licensing that they felt might have tarnished the franchise.
The financial terms of the joint venture were not disclosed.
"No Time to Die"—the 25th James Bond film—was released in 2021 and earned $775 million.
There have been no announcements regarding the timeline for production of the next film or Craig's replacement.

History May Repeat Itself

So far, several big names have been considered for the part, including Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. However, the studio’s decision to consider a lesser-known actor aligns with past casting choices. All the actors who have portrayed the iconic spy only rose to stardom after securing the role.

When factoring in the additional costs associated with hiring a high-profile actor, it is understandable why the studio is looking at fresh faces. The search for a director to helm the next instalment of the franchise is also underway.

Who is Stuart Martin?

The Scottish actor is known for his role in Zack Snyder’s sci-fi action movie Rebel Moon and its sequel The Scargiver. He has also appeared in Army of Thieves, Miss Scarlet and The Duke, and Jamestown. If cast, he would be the second actor of Scottish origin to portray James Bond, following Sean Connery, who first brought the character to life on the big screen.
We will have to wait for an official announcement to determine whether these reports hold any weight. Until then, speculation about the next 007 will continue.

Rebel Moon star Stuart Martin in talks to play James Bond

Daniel Craig was very clear about not returning to the big screen as James Bond. He wanted to explore other stories, other characters and he believes that he couldn’t have done so while playing Bond in the future.

Daniel Craig will next be seen in Luca Guadagnino’s Queer in which he plays William Lee, an American expat who becomes infatuated with a discharged US Navy serviceman named Eugene Allerton played by Drew Starkey. The film is based on the 1985 semi-autobiographical novels of the same name by William S Burroughs.

Speaking about the limitations of playing the world’s most famous spy on screen to The Sunday Times, Daniel Craig said, “I couldn’t have done this while doing Bond. It would look reactionary, like I was showing my range.”

He continued, “Early on with Bond I thought I had to do other work, but I didn’t. I was becoming a star, whatever that means, and people wanted me in their films. Incredible. Most actors are out of work for large chunks so you take your job offers — but they left me empty. Then, bottom line, I got paid.

"I was so exhausted at the end of a Bond, it would take me six months to recover emotionally. I always had the attitude that life must come first and, when work came first for a while, it strung me out.”

'Couldn't have played gay while playing James Bond': Daniel Craig

Daniel Craig played the iconic MI6 agent James Bond in five films. The actor however recently opened up about his biggest apprehension of stepping into the suave spy and said the he had problems with the societal expectations of the character tied to masculinity.

"I would say one of my biggest reservations about playing [Bond] would be the construct of masculinity," Daniel said during a recent event while promoting his latest film Queer by Luca Guadagnino. "It was often very laughable, but you can't mock it and expect it to work. You have to buy into it," he added.

Daniel also noted that his understanding of masculinity, which was essential to playing Bond, felt limiting at times. He explained how societal norms surrounding male behaviour were a challenge, "We're all vulnerable. It doesn't matter who you are. It doesn't matter how tough you are, everybody's vulnerable," he said, adding, “But it's how boys are brought up, how men are expected to behave, how someone like Burroughs was expected to behave.”

Daniel plays a queer man in his latest film Queer which is set in 1950s Mexico City. The film, based on William S Burroughs' novella, delves into themes of human vulnerability and desire. Daniel also noted that he could never have taken on such a role during his time as Bond.

"Listen, [Bond] is nearly 20 years of my life. When I took it on, I was one person. I'm now a completely different person," he explained, adding, "But I couldn't have done this movie when I was doing Bond. It would've felt kind of, 'Why? What are you trying to prove?'"

As he reflects on his 15 years long Bond career, Daniel revealed that there he feels a sense of liberation post-Bond. Having become a global superstar through the role, he now enjoys the freedom of taking on projects outside the shadow of 007.

As per Deadline, he also spoke about losing the "freedom" he had as a semi-anonymous actor before James Bond catapulted him to global stardom. Daniel, who first portrayed James Bond in the 2006 hit Casino Royale, went on to appear as the British secret agent in Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015), and No Time to Die (2021).

While playing the famous spy became a defining moment of his career, he has over the years repeatedly spoken about stepping away from the franchise.

In Queer, he plays a character struggling with personal isolation and romantic turmoil, a stark contrast to his action-packed portrayal of Bond. The film, set against the backdrop of Mexico City's vibrant yet challenging society, also explores themes of identity, desire, and emotional turmoil.
