The ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran is inflicting deep economic pain far beyond the battlefield. A new United Nations study estimates that Gulf nations could lose nearly $200 billion in economic output as regional growth contracts and jobs are threatened. Meanwhile, war spending in the region is also steep: Israel’s defence costs are nearing $15 billion, and US operational outlays are mounting as the conflict drags on.

Fresh questions are being raised over unusual betting patterns linked to the Iran war, with prediction platform Polymarket at the centre of the controversy. Massive, well-timed bets placed just before key announcements have triggered insider trading concerns. Some accounts reportedly made huge profits within hours, fuelling suspicions of privileged information access. Experts warn this could challenge the credibility of emerging prediction markets and demand stricter oversight.

Tensions in West Asia are escalating after Iran warned Israel of possible retaliation over its latest airstrikes in Lebanon. The warning comes after Israel launched one of its largest coordinated strike waves across Beirut and other parts of Lebanon, hitting more than 100 targets in minutes and raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

Iran on Thursday (Apr 9) announced alternative routes for ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz. "NATO WASN'T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON'T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN," he wrote. The vital meeting came amid fears that the POTUS' outrage over NATO allies' steadfast refusal to join his war against Iran could prompt him to pull the United States out of the nearly eight-decade-old alliance. Also read | Iran’s 10-point plan EXPLAINED: Compensation, sanctions, Hormuz and more, here's what Tehran wants after 2-week ceasefire deal 'NATO WASN'T THERE' In his signature all-caps post on Truth Social, Trump slammed the alliance and wrote, "NATO WASN'T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON'T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN," he wrote. Then, with no further context: "REMEMBER GREENLAND, THAT BIG, POORLY RUN, PIECE OF ICE!!!" Before the Iran war took over headlines, Trump's designs on the Danish Arctic territory had been NATO's most pressing headache. Its sudden reappearance — unprompted, the day after a fragile US-Iran ceasefire — was a reminder that the Greenland ambition never really went away. In recent days, Trump has been openly contemptuous of NATO's response to the Iran war, calling the alliance a "paper tiger" for refusing to take a leading role in reopening the Strait of Hormuz and for limiting American forces' use of bases on allied territory. He also mounted personal attacks against UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, comparing him to Winston Churchill and dismissing Britain's aircraft carriers as "toys." The meeting itself produced no public resolution on the question everyone came to answer: whether Trump is seriously considering pulling the United States out of NATO. However, a NATO spokesperson, in a statement on X, said that the Rutte and Trump "had a frank discussion on a range of issues related to our shared security, including in the context of Iran." "The Secretary General underscored the importance of Allies continuing to step up to deliver a stronger, fairer Alliance," added the spokesperson. Before the meeting, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that withdrawal was "something the president has discussed" and would be discussing with the NATO Secretary General. Rutte, the former Dutch prime minister, has built a reputation for managing Trump through a combination of flattery and strategic patience. Last year, he made headlines for calling Trump "daddy" at a summit. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine addressed the media following a 14-day ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. The Pentagon says it is ready to act if tensions rise again, as the world watches whether this ceasefire holds.

‘Changes nothing’: US lawmakers divided after Trump announces Iran ceasefire

At a press conference, a reporter asked Donald Trump about his mental state, leading him to spiral and say things that further raised questions about his capability to lead the United States. The 79-year-old has been raining constant threats on Iran, which have been flagged as unsuitable for a President. Earlier this week, he told Iran, "Open the F--kin’ Strait, you crazy bastards" in a rant on Truth Social. Using expletives to handle a delicate situation, a war that the US and Israel started, led to concerns about Trump and his ability to do the job. A journalist questioned Trump about it outright. "Yesterday on your Truth Social, you called the Iranians ‘crazy bastards.’” Trump replied, "True." People on the internet lauded the journalist for finally asking what many people had been pointing out. They said that Trump's response cements the belief about his mental health instead of rejecting it. "His answer doesn’t help disprove the point that he’s completely gaga," a user wrote. Another person commented, "Thank you Mr. Reporter!!!! The president has said on several occasions that the war is over, only to later warn Iran of more attacks. On the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said that the US can open it alone, and later said "The countries of the world that do receive oil through the Hormuz Strait must take care of that passage." His words like "Open the F--kin’ Strait, you crazy bastards" and "a whole civilization will die tonight" have further led to American lawmakers being called on to invoke the 25th Amendment.

Donald Trump mental health: A journalist asked the American president about the critics who say that his mental health should be examined. Trump responded without losing his cool, saying that he had not heard about it, and said they need more people like him.

"Yesterday on your Truth Social, you called the Iranians ‘crazy bastards.’” Trump replied, "True." The reporter goes on to ask, “What is your response to critics who say that,” and was cut off by Trump, who said, “I don’t care about critics.” The reporter continued, irrespective of what Trump said, and asked, “What is your response to critics who say that it is your mental health that should perhaps be examined as this war continues?” To this, Trump openly answered, "Well, I haven’t heard that. US President Donald Trump declared Tuesday (Apr 7) a “big day for World Peace” after a two-week ceasefire was announced following an agreement between the United States and Iran. Calling it “the Golden Age of the Middle East,” Trump said that Iran wanted this to happen as “they’ve had enough”. He added that the US will be helping the traffic buildup in the Strait of Hormuz that has been blocked by Tehran due to the war. The US president stated that Iran can start the reconstruction process, while the US will be loading up supplies and “hangin’ around” to make sure “everything goes well”. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, “A big day for World Peace! There will be lots of positive action! Big money will be made. Iran can start the reconstruction process. We’ll be loading up with supplies of all kinds, and just “hangin’ around” in order to make sure that everything goes well. I feel confident that it will. Just like we are experiencing in the U.S., this could be the Golden Age of the Middle East!!!”The recent post came after Trump announced that he had agreed to “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks” after receiving a 10-point proposal from Iran that he believes is a “workable basis on which to negotiate”.Trump has suggested that the US military will remain in the region despite the Iranian proposal demanding the withdrawal of US forces from the Middle East. Reports suggest that the US deployed roughly 7,000 additional personnel (including the 82nd Airborne and Marine Expeditionary Units) to the region in March 2026 to bolster defences. According to estimates, there are approximately 50,000 to 57,000 US troops currently stationed across the Middle East.
