The Strait of Hormuz is once again at the center of global concern as rising tensions threaten to disrupt one of the world’s most vital oil routes. Gulf producers, heavily dependent on this narrow passage, face significant exposure, with limited alternatives despite pipeline networks. As risks grow, the situation is putting pressure on global energy markets, raising fears of supply disruptions and potential price shocks.

Hormuz Choke Tightens: Gulf Oil Giants Face Major Export Risk as Strait Tensions Rise

A rare and intense public clash has erupted between US President Donald Trump and Pope Leo, with Trump calling the pontiff “weak on crime” and refusing to apologise despite mounting backlash. The row deepened after Trump shared—and later deleted—controversial images depicting himself in a Christ-like form. The dispute stems from sharp differences over the Iran conflict, highlighting a growing divide between political power and moral authority on the global stage.

The escalating Iran-US tensions around the Strait of Hormuz are now hitting global trade hard, with shipping insurance costs surging dramatically. ‘War risk’ premiums have reportedly jumped up to four times, forcing shipowners to seek specialised coverage for voyages through the region. Insurers fear a potential conflict could disrupt one of the world’s busiest oil routes, pushing costs higher and adding fresh pressure on global supply chains.

Hormuz Uncertainty Reflects In Shipping Costs And Insurance

Tensions are rising sharply after the US moved to enforce a blockade around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route. The move came after failed talks with Iran, immediately disrupting shipping and raising fears in energy markets. China has called the blockade “dangerous,” urging restraint while signaling it will safeguard its vital energy trade with Iran. As global powers take positions, the crisis is fast turning into a wider geopolitical standoff.

Trump's comments came hours after the US imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports and after marathon talks in Pakistan over the weekend failed to yield an agreement.

The United Kingdom cut debt after the Napoleonic wars so it had the fiscal firepower to fight subsequent battles. But today’s superpower struggle between the United States and China, and the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, are occurring when government borrowing across the world is already high.
Governments are spending more on defence and cutting their reliance on rivals in response to global threats. That is pushing up debt relative to GDP, limiting their ability to project power. Borrowing costs have also shot up. The yield on 10-year U.S. government bonds has almost trebled to 4.3% over the past five years.
