West Texas Intermediate, the main US crude benchmark, plunged more than 17 per cent to around $93 a barrel by late Wednesday GMT. Brent Crude wasn't far behind, dropping nearly 16 per cent to $93.38. Oil prices fall below $100 as Iran-US ceasefire kicks in after last minute Strait of Hormuz deal

Iran on Tuesday (Apr 7) gave a green light to safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for a period of two weeks as the United States and Tehran agreed to a temporary ceasefire just under an hour before US President Donald Trump's deadline to launch a devastating new wave of strikes was set to expire. In a post on X, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced a temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint whose closure has rattled global energy markets, sent oil prices surging past $100 a barrel, and pushed several Asian nations toward fuel rationing since the conflict began on February 28.Also read | God supports Iran war?
Two-week ceasefire in place: What did Iran say about Hormuz?
The United States of America and Iran pulled back from the edge Tuesday, agreeing to a two-week ceasefire. Announcing the truce on Truth social just an hour before his deadline to launch large-scale military strikes, Trump said, "Subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks."Also read | Betting on a missing US pilot? Polymarket apologises for ‘DISGUSTING’ wager amid Iran warConfirming the ceasefire, Iranian FM on X said that this includes a temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Araghchi credited Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir for what he described as "tireless efforts" in brokering the pause, and confirmed that Iran had agreed to halt its "defensive operations" if "attacks against Iran are halted" first.

The ceasefire framework appears to be a hybrid of two competing proposals — a 15-point US plan and a 10-point Iranian counterproposal. Araghchi said Washington had accepted Iran's general framework as a basis for negotiations, while Tehran responded to Islamabad's direct appeal to stand down. The Strait will reopen to maritime traffic on a coordinated basis, with Iran's armed forces managing passage and flagging what Aragchi described as "technical limitations." US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Monday (Apr 6) drew parallels between the rescue operation of the F-15E crew member, who was stranded in Iran after his fighter jet went down in enemy territory on Good Friday, and Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. The US pilot was rescued on Easter Sunday following an intense special forces operation deep in Iran.Speaking during a press conference on the rescue mission, Hegseth detailed how the airman “evaded capture for more than a day, scaling rugged ridges while hunted by the enemy.”“When he was finally able to activate his emergency transponder, his first message was simple and it was powerful. He sent a message: ‘God is good,’” Hegseth said. “In that moment of isolation and danger, his faith and fighting spirit shone through.”Speaking of the F-15E shot down and the pilots rescue, Hegseth said, “You see, shot down on a Friday —Good Friday — hidden in a cave — a crevice — all of Saturday and rescued on Sunday,” Hegseth said. “Flown out of Iran as the sun was rising on Easter Sunday, a pilot reborn. All home and accounted for. A nation rejoicing. God is good.”The F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet was shot down over southern Iran on Friday (Apr 3), the first such incident since the start of the war. While the first pilot was rescued by the US forces earlier, the second had remained missing behind the enemy lines as American and Iranian forces raced to locate him. Reports suggested that the second crew member from the downed F-15E has been recovered after a “heavy firefight”.“No American lives were lost,” Hegseth said. “We leave no man behind. And that is not luck. It’s the result of unmatched training, superior technology and unbreakable warrior ethos and sheer American grit. Our special operators, pilots and support crews performed with near perfection under fire, and they were lethal.”“Just ask any Iranian soldier who dared attempt to get anywhere near that pilot before or during that mission. This comes after US President Donald Trump threatened Tehran with “complete demolition” of the country’s civilian infrastructure once the deadline to make a deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz is over. In a statement, IDF’s Persian-language spokesman, Lt. Col. (res.) Kamal Penhasi said, “Dear citizens, for your safety, we request that from this moment until 21:00 Iran time, you refrain from using and travelling by train across Iran.” He added, “Your presence on trains and near railway lines puts your lives at risk.” A day earlier, Defence Minister Israel Katz said that the Israeli military has been instructed to “continue striking with full force the national infrastructure of the Iranian terror regime.” Meanwhile, the IDF confirmed bombing another petrochemical facility in Iran a day earlier, Times of Israel reported. It said that it was “one of the few remaining facilities” used to manufacture materials for ballistic missiles. Iranian media on Monday (Apr 6) reported that airstrikes hit the Marvdasht Petrochemical Complex, near Shiraz, hours after the Israeli Air Force bombed Iran’s largest petrochemical facility in Asaluyeh. In a statement, the IDF said that the facility near Shiraz “was used by Iran’s armed forces to produce nitric acid, a substance necessary for manufacturing explosives and additional materials used in ballistic missile development processes.” The Israeli Air Force also struck an Iranian ballistic missile forces facility in northwestern Iran. “The site was struck while soldiers and commanders of the missile array were operating within it to advance and carry out terror activities against the State of Israel and other countries,” the IDF said. Serious questions are being raised about the true scale of U.S. military casualties in the ongoing Iran conflict.

A report by The Intercept claims that the number of American troops killed or injured could be far higher than officially disclosed. While U.S. Central Command has acknowledged over 300 wounded personnel, independent estimates suggest the figure could be closer to 750.

An anonymous defence official has even alleged a “cover-up,” accusing the military of releasing outdated or incomplete casualty data. Meanwhile, officials have declined to provide clear figures on fatalities.

As President Donald Trump's deadline approaches, media reports suggest a last-ditch effort by mediators for a 45-day ceasefire. Pakistan has reportedly proposed a two-stage plan to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The framework involves an immediate ceasefire followed by a final agreement within 15 to 20 days. Under the proposal, Iran would forego nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief and access to frozen funds. Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir reportedly held talks with US Vice President J.D. Vance, US envoy Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to coordinate the plan.
