IPL 2020: BCCI president Sourav Ganguly leaves for Dubai to oversee preparations

Virat Kohli says he has "never felt so calm" going into an Indian Premier League season as the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper chases an elusive title in the Twenty20 tournament.

Kohli's Bangalore finished runners-up in the 2016 edition but have since disappointed and were bottom of the eight-team table last year.

But the world's leading ODI batsman expects a turnaround from a team containing big names such as South Africa's explosive AB de Villiers and Australia's big-hitting white ball skipper Aaron Finch.

"I (have) never felt so calm going into a season before," Kohli said during an interview posted on his side's YouTube channel on Monday ahead of the tournament beginning September 19 in the United Arab Emirates.

"He (de Villiers) is coming from a very different space and he is enjoying his life and is very relaxed and fit as ever. I feel I am in a much better space, much more balanced, when it comes to environment of (the) IPL.

"Aaron Finch is someone who has experience of playing international cricket."

Kohli has captained Bangalore since 2013 and said the tournament being played outside India because of coronavirus meant his side would be "disconnecting with things that have happened in the past and not taking that baggage, as we have done that way too many times.

"Just because we have a bunch of players that are so skilled... people have had so much expectation," he admitted.

Bangalore's other imported talent includes South African pace bowler Chris Morris and little known Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Philippe.

"Morris brings in a lot of balance," said Kohli. "Some of the youngsters we have picked this time are quite exciting too like Josh Philippe, a very exciting player."

The IPL will be played across three venues within relatively close proximity -- Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi -- and Kohli feels that will lead to consistent playing conditions across the tournament.

"It (the usual home and away system in India) gets hectic, conditions change... This time, it's more of a level playing field and everything would now boil down to skill level rather than home advantage," he said.

"We have unpacked all bags and stacked clothes in the wardrobe. We go, practise, live in our own bio-bubble… It's a more settled and calm feeling."

IPL 2020: From Raina to Malinga - Top players who have pulled out of the tournament

Anil Kumble, the head coach of Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), on Tuesday said that the side bought Glenn Maxwell in order to give the line-up a much-needed impact player in the middle.

The 2020 edition of the IPL will be played in the UAE from September 19 till November 10 across three venues -- Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.

In the players' auction which was held in December 2019, Maxwell was bought by KXIP for INR 10.75 crore. The side had also increased depth in their bowling ranks after acquiring Windies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for INR 8.5 crore.

"In the players' auction we addressed that we needed an impact player and that is why we bought Glenn Maxwell. He can field and bat, he is a gun fielder as well. The other part was that we needed a fast bowler who can bowl at the death that is why we looked at Sheldon Cottrell. Overall we are satisfied with the squad we have. In the end, it's about keeping the things simple," Kumble replied to an ANI inquiry during a virtual interaction.

Kings XI Punjab will be led by KL Rahul this year, and Kumble is well aware of the qualities of the Karnataka-born batsman having seen him from childhood.

Talking about KL Rahul's leadership, Kumble said: "Knowing KL and some of the players from the past really helps. I have seen KL from his childhood. So far he has been brilliant, he knows the players better than me, he has been with the franchise for two years, he is very relaxed, he has been in the scene for a while now, he understands the nuances of the game, so all of that put together it really helps, I am happy with the start we have had, I am looking forward to the IPL under his leadership."

Kumble also gave his take on MS Dhoni playing the IPL 2020 after announcing his retirement from international cricket. The former India coach said that the wicket-keeper batsman would be highly motivated to do well for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

"I don't understand what is the meaning of extra motivation. I am sure Dhoni is motivated that is why he is here. Knowing MS, he will obviously give his 100 percent, even when I played IPL's second season, I had retired, the last two seasons I played in IPL, I was retired. I am sure MS will be as motivated to do well in IPL," Kumble said.

Mumbai Indians will lock horns with Chennai Super Kings in the opener on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. Kings XI Punjab will face Delhi Capitals in their opening match of the tournament on September 20.

Never had ego issues about IPL auctions, even a player like Amla went unsold: Pujara

There has been a lot of talks surrounding the future of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh after the duo pulled out of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 citing ‘personal reasons’. Raina has been a herculean figure for CSK over the years. Seven franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 have collectively hired a charter to bring 22 players from Manchester to Dubai which will cost them around one hundred thousand pounds and more.

England and Australian players, who are currently involved in the ongoing limited-overs series, will aboard a charter flight in Manchester after the last ODI of the England-Australia white-ball series, on September 17 and will be with their respective teams well ahead of the IPL 2020 openers, according to a report in Mumbai Mirror.

The likes of Steve Smith, David Warner, Aaron Finch, Pat Cummins, Jos Butter, Eoin Morgan, Jofra Archer among others will be heading to the UAE in a charter flight after the franchises decided to shell out a lump sum money together in a bid to get the six-day quarantine exempted. The only team that has not participated are Mumbai Indians.

The idea of bringing in a charter flight into the play is to transport all the players from the England bubble to IPL’s bio environment. Kolkata Knight Riders, based in Abu Dhabi, will need their players to undergo six-day isolation due to the strict protocols in the emirates. However, all three KKR players – Cummins, Banton and Morgan – will be eligible to play on September 23 – their seventh day in Abu Dhabi – after clearing all three COVID-19 tests.

IPL-bound English and Aussie players will travel to the airport in a sanitized bus and will land at a different airport, not at the regular Dubai International Airport.

“It has all been taken care of. The idea is that they are not outside of the bubble. If we had flown them by commercial flights, they would have had to undergo quarantine. And costwise also it would have been dearer as each player will have to be flown by business class. Close to Rs 1 crore for 22 players is not much I suppose,” a franchise official said.

ALSO READ: Rajasthan Royals' Ben Stokes likely to miss first part of IPL 2020 The Dream11 IPL 2020 schedule has been locked in! Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 outfit Rajasthan Royals (RR) may start their campaign without the services of Ben Stokes with the England all-rounder set to be unavailable for the tournament for at least the first phase of IPL 2020.

The 29-year-old is currently in New Zealand with his father, Gerard, who was earlier diagnosed with brain cancer. Stokes had flown to his hometown to be with his father, who is also a former New Zealand rugby player and has just completed his 14-day mandatory quarantine period.

Stokes pulled out of the final two Tests against Pakistan and will go on to miss at least the first phase of IPL 2020 and there are chances that he might skip the entire IPL.

CSK are now set to commence their practice session after completing their quarantine phase and will look forward to take to the field in the lucrative T20 tournament.

As per a report in TOI, CSK have been unofficially informed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that they will play the season opener against Mumbai Indians on September 19 with the schedule officially expected to be released on Friday.

After the news of 13 members including two players in the CSK contingent broke out, the BCCI delayed the announcement of IPL 2020 schedule. Speculation was rife that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) could play Mumbai Indians (MI) in the season opener of 13th edition of IPL.

However, the board is happy with the latest round of results and how the virus hasn’t spread to other teammates. Now, they are planning to release the schedule with CSK vs MI as opener.

"It's not a problem at all. We will be happy to play game 1 if we are asked to," a CSK source told TOI.

However, CSK will be without Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad while Suresh Raina have opted out of IPL 2020. Even Harbhajan Singh is likely to pull out of the tournament. Without much training, it will be a massive challenge for CSK to hit the ground running when IPL starts.

Harbhajan Singh likely to skip IPL 2020: Report

While there is massive anticipation surrounding the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, scheduled to kick-start on September 19, COVID-19 has already left an impact in the lucrative tournament as after 13 members of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) contingent, one member from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team has tested positive for the dreaded coronavirus.

The latest positive case takes the tally to 14. However, the positive member of the BCCI medical team was tested in India and didn’t leave for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where the cash-rich tournament is scheduled to be played.

As per BCCI SOPs, testing is rigorous on everyone who is involved in IPL 2020. A webinar was held by the BCCI last week, where members of the BCCI medical team answered queries from players and franchises in a bid to clear their doubts of bio-secure bubble protocols and other safety guidelines.

However, some IPL teams failed to get in touch with the medical expert in the BCCI medical team after the webinar. Reportedly, the person has been moved to a separate quarantine facility and is self-isolating. But no confirmation has been issued by the board on this matter yet.

Moreover, two people at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru have also tested positive for the coronavirus but they are not linked to IPL 2020.

Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly, to ABP News, confirmed that IPL 2020 schedule will be out on Friday (September 4) if the final details are cleared on Thursday. It was apparently delayed due to COVID-19 cases in the CSK camp.

Even the BCCI has acquired necessary exemptions on quarantine for players and staff which means no one participating in IPL will have to self-isolate when travelling from Dubai to Abu Dhabi or Sharjah to Abu Dhabi for matches. Abu Dhabi has strict quarantine rules in place as compared to other Emirates with new positive cases in UAE touching 735 as reported on Wednesday.

The badge can be opened inside the designated hotel rooms of the players and officials as well as on the field of play.

IPL 2020: Mumbai Indians sign Australia's James Pattinson as Lasith Malinga's replacement

Suresh Raina on Wednesday revealed the reason behind him leaving the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp ahead of much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. There were many reports citing different theories but Raina has now come out in public to reveal what made him return back to India.

Raina said that there was something that needed to be addressed immediately on a personal front while adding that he might even return back to the Super Kings camp for IPL 2020. The swashbuckling southpaw said that he has a young family and was worried about them during this time of global pandemic.

“It was a personal decision and I had to come back for my family. There was something that needed to be addressed immediately on the home front. CSK is my family too and Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) is very important to me and this was a tough decision. There is no issue between CSK and me. Nobody will just turn their back on Rs 12.5 crore and walk away without a solid reason. I might have retired from international cricket but I'm still young and I am looking forward to playing for them in the IPL for the next 4-5 years,” Raina told Cricbuzz.

Speculation surrounding Raina’s sudden exit was rife when Srinivasan termed him as ‘Prima Donna’ while adding that sometimes success can get into the head of players among other comments. However, the Super Kings boss clarified that he was misquoted.

Speaking of Srinivasan, Raina said: “He is like a father figure to me and he's always stood by me and is close to my heart. He treats me like his younger son and am sure a lot of what he said was taken out of context. Ek baap apne bacche ko daant sakta hai(A father can scold his son). He didn't know the real reasons for me leaving when he gave those comments. Now he's been informed about them and he even sent me a message thereafter. We've chatted about it and both CSK and I just want to get over with it.”

Raina didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to Chennai Super Kings camp for IPL 2020 and lauded the BCCI and CSK team management for doing a commendable job with the bio-secure environment and organising IPL 2020 in UAE.

“I've been training even while quarantining here. You never know you might see me in the camp there again.

“The team management and BCCI are doing a very commendable job keeping everyone safe. This has never been done before and its new for everyone. It's a highly secure environment and no one without access can move anywhere. We were all inside our rooms with no human interaction and there was a test every 2 days,” Raina said.

“I have a young family back home and I was concerned about the fact that if something happened to me, unka kya hoga?(what'll happen to them). My family is most important to me and I am really concerned for them during these times. I haven't seen my kids for more than 20 days, even after coming back, since I am in quarantine,” he added.

Raina further spoke about the horrific incident involving his family in Pathankot, Punjab, where his uncle was slaughtered to death by assailants as he said it was his responsibility to return home and take care of them.

“The Pathankot incident was horrible and has really been very disturbing for everyone in our family. And it was my responsibility to come back and take care of them. But since I've returned, I've been in quarantine here. So, I still have to go meet my parents and my buawho are all in great distress,” Raina said.

TRENDING | Watch: COVID-19 positive Deepak Chahar inspires as CSK share his leg-day workout video Speculation surrounding Raina’s sudden exit was rife when Srinivasan termed him as ‘Prima Donna’ while adding that sometimes success can get into the head of players among other comments. We've chatted about it and both CSK and I just want to get over with it.” Raina didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to Chennai Super Kings camp for IPL 2020 and lauded the BCCI and CSK team management for doing a commendable job with the bio-secure environment and organising IPL 2020 in UAE. Raina further spoke about the horrific incident involving his family in Pathankot, Punjab, where his uncle was slaughtered to death by assailants as he said it was his responsibility to return home and take care of them. When looking at our squad for UAE conditions we felt it was an opportunity to bring in another quality leg spinner in Adam Zampa to provide cover for Chahal and also give us extra options if conditions suit spin as expected during the tournament.” ALSO READ: Suresh Raina opens up for first time since leaving Chennai Super Kings camp Zampa will add to Bangalore’s already impressive spin department which consists the likes of Chahal, Washington Sundar, Pawan Negi and Moeen Ali. Both Richardson and Zampa are in the UK as part of Australia’s 21-man squad for three T20I and as many ODIs against England. IPL 2020 is scheduled to commence from September 19 with the final slated to be held on November 10 in the UAE.

IPL 2020: Australia's Adam Zampa replaces Kane Richardson in Royal Challengers Bangalore squad

The Indian Premier League’s eight teams are counting the cost of COVID-19’s impact on their finances but having faced the prospect of the tournament being wiped out by the pandemic this year they are taking a ‘glass half-full’ view of the situation.

The IPL’s original March start was scuppered by the first wave of the novel coronavirus and India’s cricket board (BCCI) had to pull out all the stops to rescue the Twenty20 league, which has an estimated $6.8 billion brand value.

The tournament has been shifted to the United Arab Emirates, will be played under a hastily-arranged title sponsor and will start on Sept. 19 — nearly six months later than scheduled.

After Vivo paused its title sponsorship for this year’s edition, fantasy gaming company Dream11 took it up for 2.22 billion Indian rupees ($30.36 million), roughly half of the 4.4 billion the Chinese smartphone maker paid annually.

“The discount provided to Dream11 would be a major (financial) hit for the BCCI, along with making arrangements for bio-secure bubble which will be an additional cost burden on the board,” Santosh N, an external advisor at financial consultancy firm Duff & Phelps, told Reuters.

The league shares 50% of the title sponsorship money with the eight franchises, who will also miss out on gate receipts and in-stadium revenue this year while existing sponsors demand discounts in the absence of fan initiatives.

The switch has seen Delhi Capitals lose shirt sponsor Daikin, with the air-conditioning equipment maker saying the new dates did not work for them.

“The reason being the business scenario and the timing, which earlier, being the summer, would call for advertising efforts to create awareness and recall for the AC category,” a Daikin spokesman told Reuters.

Capitals Chairman Parth Jindal said the BCCI should look at compensating the franchises.

“If the BCCI doesn’t compensate, there will be a significant loss to each franchise, about a 30% drop in revenues,” Jindal told Mint newspaper earlier this month.

SILVER LINING

But with the BCCI at risk of a $547 million drop in revenue had the entire season been cancelled, treasurer Arun Sigh Dhumal preferred to look on the bright side.

“When you encounter such challenging times and so many impediments, you are bound to lose on certain revenues,” Dhumal told Reuters.

“Looking at the overall picture, everybody should be happy that at least we’ve been able to organise it.

“At such short notice, we’ve been able to get a new title sponsor. It speaks volumes of IPL as a brand, and how it has grown over the years.”

Sponsors continue to trickle in for the franchises and the league also welcomed edutech start-up Unacademy as a new sponsor on Saturday on a three-year deal, reportedly worth 1.2 billion rupees.

Santosh said that as the tournament draws closer more would come onboard.

“And with the IPL happening around the festive season this time around, it’s an added bonus for the companies to be associated with it,” he added.
