"When players prioritise IPL over playing for the country, we what can we say. Players should take pride in playing for their nation. I don't know their financial conditions so can't say much," Kapil Dev said on ABP News.

"But I feel that first in line should be the country's team and then franchises. I'm not saying do not play cricket there (IPL), but the responsibility is now on the BCCI to plan its cricket better. To not repeat mistakes we committed in this tournament is the biggest learning for us," he added.

Kapil further stated that the Indian team should quickly move on from the debacle at the T20 World Cup 2021 and should focus on the future. The former captain believes there should have been some gap between the IPL 2021 and the T20 World Cup which potentially took a toll on players mentally and physically as they were playing in strict bio-bubbles since a long time.

"It's time to look at the future. You should start planning right away. It's not that since the World Cup is over, the Indian team's entire cricket is too. Go and plan. I just feel that there should have been some gap between IPL and the World Cup. But this is certainly there that our players today have a lot of exposure but they could not make the most of it," said Kapil.

If a team decides to retain 4 players, it will have to spend INR 420 million (Rs 42 crore) in total if they want to retain four players, INR 330 million (Rs 33 crore) of they want to retain three players and INR 240 million (Rs 24 crore) of they want to retain two players.

If a franchise decides to retain a total of four players, INR 420 million (Rs 42 crore) will be deducted from their total purse. In the case of three retentions, a team will have to part ways with INR 330 million (Rs 33 crore). INR 240 million (Rs 24 crore) will be deducted from a team's purse in case of two retentions and INR 140 million (Rs 14 crore) will be deducted from a franchise's purse in case of single retention.

BCCI confirms retention policy for IPL 2022: Existing teams can retain 4, 3 picks for new sides - Report

The 2022 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be a 10-team affair and the two new inducted teams, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, are likely to target T20 stars -- David Warner, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and Surya Kumar Yadav, among others to make a solid team and loyal fan base. 
 
The Lucknow IPL team was bought by RPSG Group for Rs. 7,090 crore, while CVC Capital Partners paid Rs 5,625 cr for the Ahmedabad team. 
 
Though it's not official yet, the eight existing IPL teams are likely to retain a maximum of four players and the two new franchises will be able to acquire three players from the rest of the player pool via drafts before the 2022 auction. Also, unlike the previous big auction ahead of the 2018 season, there could be no right-to-match cards (RTM) at the auction. 
 
As per ESPNCricinfo, these were among the rules discussed informally this week between the IPL organisers and the franchises. 
 
As far as the three players going to the two new franchises, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, is concerned, the IPL is mulling over a combination of two Indian players and one overseas. However, it is still not clear whether these players will need to be picked strictly from the group of players not retained by the existing franchises, or can be from the larger auction pool -- which will have new additions -- ahead of the 2022 auction.

If the two new franchises are allowed to pick only from the group of players not retained by the other eight, then a player-draft system is likely to be put in place. 
 
Notably, which cricketers plays for whom could make or break the franchises` fan base as well as the team combination. And there is a strong possibility of some big names such as David Warner, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Surya Kumar Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar being up for grabs via drafts this time. 
 
Lucknow: 
 
David Warner: RPSG Group, who now owns Lucknow, had bought the Pune franchise for two years in 2016. In those two years, they had appointed experienced captains in MS Dhoni and Steve Smith for one year each. 
 
An attacking opener as well as an experienced captain like Warner could be a perfect choice for the owners to lead Lucknow. And, considering the short boundaries and flat pitch of the Ekana Stadium, the Australian could be a sure-shot match-winner for the franchise. 
 
Surya Kumar Yadav: Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Kieron Pollard will be the three automatic picks for retention for Mumbai Indians. There could be a discussion between Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan for the fourth slot. With Kishan being the wicketkeeper-batsman and age also on his side, Surya Kumar could be left out of the Mumbai team. 
 
If Surya becomes a free agent, Lucknow owners can convince him to be a part of the franchise. Though he plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket, the batsman`s father belongs to Varanasi, UP. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have no doubts about retaining captain MS Dhoni if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) allows retentions for all eight teams ahead of the mega player auction. All eight teams are set for a major revamp of their respective squads as BCCI is set to conduct a mega auction ahead of IPL 2022.

Two new teams will be added to the league's roster from the 2022 season and the board will look to give a fair chance to all teams to make their squads from scratch once again. Dhoni 'will be the first name' on the retention list if the franchises are allowed to retain players ahead of the mega auction.

As per a CSK source, Dhoni's future with the Yellow Army will depend on the retentions rules framed by BCCI ahead of the new season. The source stated that Dhoni will be the first man to be retained by the team.

"MS will be the first man to be retained, there is no doubt about it. But first of all we need to know the retention rules, which we are not aware of as of now. If we can retain (players), Dhoni will be first to save," a CSK source told Sports Tak.
