In the first major announcement by an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise ahead of the mega auction for the 2022 season, the RPSG Group has confirmed the appointment of former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower as the new head coach of the Lucknow IPL team. RPSG Group owns the Lucknow franchise which is one of the two new teams to debut in the IPL from the 2022 season.

Flower has left his post as the assistant coach of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) franchise to join the Lucknow IPL team ahead of the new season. The former Zimbabwe wicket-keeper is an experienced coach and has worked with a number of teams including the England national side.&nbsp;

Flower worked as an assistant coach for Punjab Kings for two seasons under their current head coach Anil Kumble and is now set to be at the helm of affairs himself at the Lucknow franchise. Welcoming the former Zimbabwe cricketer, Lucknow IPL team's owner Sanjeev Goenka lauded him for his contributions to world cricket.

"As a player and a coach Andy has left an indelible mark in the history of cricket. We respect his professionalism and hope he will work with our vision and add value to our team," said Goenka.

Chennai Super Kings have retained captain Dhoni ahead of the mega auction and the 40-year-old is all set to lead the team once again next season. The Aussie batter is also coming off a brilliant campaign for Australia in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2021 where he had notched up 289 runs in seven matches to bag the Player of the Tournament award. Assistant coach Andy Flower has parted ways with Punjab Kings and is expected to land a role in one of the new teams ahead of IPL 2022.

Former Zimbabwe captain Flower, who worked as a coach in England for more than a decade and guided the national team there, was hired for his maiden IPL stint ahead of the 2020 season.

"He sent his resignation to the team recently. It has been accepted. There is a good chance that he goes to one of the new teams (Lucknow or Ahmedabad)," a BCCI official told PTI.

Punjab wanted to retain Rahul but he did not want to stay.

It remains to be seen if Flower stays as head coach of CPL franchise Saint Lucia Kings, which is owned by same consortium that owns Punjab Kings. Saint Lucia finished runners-up in 2020 and 2021 season.

Ahead of making their retentions official, SRH took to Instagram to thank their players for their contributions over the years. SRH also stated that it was not a goodbye from the franchise side as they would like to buy back some of the players again during the auction.

England batter Jonny Bairstow is among the players to be released by SRH ahead of the mega auction. Bairstow himself confirmed the end of his association with the Orange Army as he reacted to SRH's farewell post for their players and wrote - “Thank you all for your support! Hopefully, at some point our paths cross again in the future,”&nbsp;
