The Indian Navy will commission its third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), INS Mangrol, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai later today. The ceremony will be presided over by Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, and attended by senior naval officers, defence ministry officials, representatives of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), and industry partners. Built by CSL in Kochi with more than 80 percent indigenous content, Mangrol is designed to detect and counter underwater threats in coastal and shallow waters, where larger warships face operational constraints. India is now moving towards this new underwater battlefield, with the industry working on increasingly large autonomous underwater vehicles that could perform surveillance, reconnaissance and other high-risk missions for the Indian Navy. India has summoned Pakistan’s top diplomat in New Delhi after what it called the ‘unacceptable and unprofessional conduct’ of Pakistani naval units that led to a collision with an Indian Navy ship in international waters. The Ministry of External Affairs said the Pakistani chargé d’affaires was called in on Wednesday and a ‘strong protest’ was lodged. Indian Navy's first multipurpose vessel: A platform to test weapons, sensors at sea

The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Nipun, its second indigenous Diving Support Vessel, strengthening deep-sea diving and submarine rescue capabilities. With China expanding its underwater reach and Pakistan adding Chinese-origin Hangor-class submarines, India is building a wider undersea defence network combining submarines, sonar systems, anti-submarine warfare craft and deep-sea support vessels. This video explains how INS Nipun gives Indian navy a dedicated deep-sea diving and submarine rescue platform on the western seaboard.

India’s long-delayed Project 75(I) submarine programme could finally be moving closer to fruition, with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) emerging as the preferred partner. A proposal for six advanced diesel-electric submarines fitted with air-independent propulsion (AIP) is expected to go before the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for final clearance in the coming days, Indian media reports claimed. Over 85% of its crude oil does too. Four key choke points matter most: the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea-Suez route, the Strait of Malacca and Bab el-Mandeb. Hormuz alone has carried a large share of India's oil, gas and cooking fuel. A blockage at any of these gates can hit kitchens, factories and refineries within weeks. Recent events show the risks. Houthi attacks have hit shipping near Yemen. An Indian-flagged cargo ship was struck and sank in early August 2026; its crew was rescued. Indian warships then escorted tankers through Bab el-Mandeb. More than 50 are already under construction. A second home-built carrier still awaits full approval. Ships take years to build. Crises arrive in days. Geography gives India an advantage. The Indian Navy has taken delivery of Nipun, its second indigenously built diving support vessel, from Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam. The handover marks another step in the country’s effort to build specialised underwater capabilities at home. Nipun, whose name derives from a Sanskrit word meaning skilled, is a 118-metre ship displacing more than 8,560 tonnes. Officials say more than 80 per cent of its value was sourced within India. The vessel has been designed and built to the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping. It is intended for deep-sea diving, submarine rescue and underwater intervention work. At its core is a dynamic positioning system that allows the ship to hold a precise position over a worksite without anchors, critical when divers or rescue equipment are operating below. The vessel is fitted with saturation diving systems, including compression chambers and life-support equipment, so divers can remain at working depth for extended periods. A side diving stage supports operations, while remotely operated vehicles extend the ship’s reach for inspection, monitoring and light salvage beyond the limits of human divers. Nipun will also serve as a mother ship for a Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle, managing launch, recovery and communications during efforts to reach a disabled submarine and evacuate its crew. Few navies maintain this complete chain as an organically owned capability. Also read | India's GPS has a satellite problem: Government says NavIC no longer working. India aims for 200-ship Navy by 2035 to counter China and Pakistan | Gravitas

Navies from 27 countries have completed a major international maritime security exercise in southern India, hailing it as a practical success in building cooperation against threats at sea. Operation Southern Readiness 26-2, a four-day programme hosted by the Indian Navy in Kochi, ended on Thursday with participants praising the high-standard training and India's modern facilities. The exercise, run under the Indian Navy-led Combined Task Force 154 (CTF-154) in partnership with the 47-nation Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), brought together 276 personnel from around the world, supported by 76 facilitators and experts from four international organisations. Its aim was clear and urgent: to improve readiness and interoperability so that partner navies can better tackle shared challenges such as drug trafficking, piracy, irregular migration and other maritime threats. CTF-154 is the CMF's dedicated training task force. Set up in 2023, it focuses on capacity-building rather than patrols. It organises multinational courses on five key areas: maritime domain awareness (understanding what is happening at sea in real time), maritime law, interdiction operations, search-and-rescue, and leadership development. In February this year, India became the first nation from the region to command the task force, with Commodore Milind M Mokashi taking charge in Bahrain. Rear Admiral Deepak Singhal, Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Southern Naval Command, inaugurated the exercise on 20 July. "It is a great enabler for India's SAGAR and MAHASAGAR initiatives," he said. "It has brought together personnel from 27 nations to train along with us, exchange with us. It provides a platform to make seas, oceans safer." Commodore Mokashi said hosting the event in India demonstrated the country's commitment. "India shared its best practices [and] training infrastructure with partner nations," he added. Also Read: Google hit with $1 billion European Union fine: What lies behind Brussels' massive penalty? Indian Navy officials point out that the success shows Kochi is emerging as a preferred global hub for maritime training, thanks to its professional expertise and state-of-the-art infrastructure. They used advanced simulators for ship handling, navigation, damage control and firefighting, and some joined operational training aboard an Indian naval vessel. Cmde Andrew Dowling of the Royal New Zealand Navy described the exercise as "incredibly important… in a busy and contested environment". Cdr Melissa Desjardins of the Royal Canadian Navy called the simulations "great" and the overall experience "a great experience". Imagine a giant warship, almost as long as one and a half football fields, quietly moving through the deep sea. Yet no enemy machine can spot it until it is too late. This is not a scene from a film. This is INS Mahendragiri, the newest and one of the smartest warships of the Indian Navy.On July 11, 2026, the Indian Navy will proudly welcome INS Mahendragiri at Visakhapatnam, a port city on the eastern coast. This ship is the last one built under a special plan called Project 17A. It belongs to the Nilgiri-class of stealth frigates. A frigate is a medium-sized fighting ship that is fast and can attack enemies in the air, on the water, and even deep underwater. The word "stealth" simply means the ability to hide. Also read | India's big diplomatic win: Canada says 'no evidence' linking New Delhi to Nijjar killingSo how does such a huge ship hide? The answer lies in radar. Radar is a machine that sends out invisible waves to find ships and aircraft that are far away. When these waves hit a normal ship, they bounce back, and the enemy sees it clearly. INS Mahendragiri is built cleverly to fool this radar. Its body has smooth, angled surfaces with very few sticking-out parts. It is coated with special materials that soak up radar waves instead of bouncing them back. The deck is kept almost flat, removing sharp edges and corners that usually reflect these waves. The most special feature is its "integrated mast." On older ships, the top is crowded with many antennas and poles, which radar catches easily. Here, all the sensors sit inside one clean, closed tower. This tower holds the powerful MF-STAR radar, an advanced system that can watch many targets at once. Because of all these tricks, INS Mahendragiri is far harder to see and follow than older Indian ships. This hiding power is not just for safety. It is a big fighting advantage. Since enemies cannot easily spot it, the ship can quietly come close to a target or enter dangerous areas and survive better. And when it decides to strike, it hits with tremendous force. Its weapons are truly frightening for any enemy. It carries eight BrahMos missiles, which are supersonic cruise missiles, meaning they fly faster than the speed of sound to smash enemy ships. For protection from air attacks, it has 32 BARAK missiles that shoot down incoming enemy planes and missiles. It also has a Super Rapid Gun and close-in weapon systems for last-moment defence. To fight submarines hiding underwater, it uses torpedoes (underwater missiles), RBU-6000 rocket launchers, and a modern sonar suite. Sonar works by using sound to detect enemies beneath the sea. The ship can also carry two helicopters, which extend its eyes and reach far beyond the horizon. Also read | 'Most wanted': FBI puts $50,000 bounty on Lawrence Bishnoi aide Goldy Brar after charging him in Hardeep Nijjar murder caseThe story of how this ship was made is equally proud. In such times, a warship that stays hidden gives India better choices. It can silently watch, gather secret information, or get ready to strike without being seen first. This changes the enemy's calculations completely. With INS Mahendragiri joining the fleet, the Indian Navy becomes stronger and smarter. Its real power lies in mixing invisibility, sharp sensors, and deadly weapons in one body. As more such ships enter service, they will form a strong backbone of India's navy, ready to guard our oceans for the years ahead. This warship is a proud symbol of India's growing sea power.

Built to stay unseen, ready to strike: India's new Stealth Frigate 'Mahendragiri' is about to join the Navy. Here's everything to know

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (Jun 21) commissioned three indigenously designed and built naval ships - INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray, an anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft. During the ceremony, the Indian PM noted that said India is steadily moving towards becoming a major maritime power, highlighting the country's growing indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and the rapid expansion of the Indian Navy.
India aspires to be a creator
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the three indigenously built naval vessels in Kolkata, Modi said more than 40 Made-in-India warships and submarines have joined the Navy in recent years, while another 45 major naval platforms are currently under construction."India aspires to be a Nirmata (creator), and as a creator, we will also become Nirnayak (decisive). We are moving rapidly in this direction," Modi said. Also read | PM Modi leads International Yoga Day celebrations from KolkataThe Prime Minister commissioned INS Dunagiri, an advanced stealth frigate, INS Sanshodhak, a large survey vessel, and INS Agray, an anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft.
Why India's maritime journey matters
Highlighting the economic significance of the maritime sector, Modi described it as an important driver of employment and industrial growth. "India's maritime sector has the potential to create millions of new jobs in the coming years. This is why we don't consider the maritime sector merely an isolated sector. We see it as the employment engine of a developed India. A modern ship requires hundreds of tons of steel, electronics, machinery, and thousands of components, and thousands of companies work behind all this. INS Kolkata tracked the vessel based on surveillance intelligence and intercepted it nearly 260 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia.During the operation, the Navy used aerial monitoring and drones to confirm the presence of armed pirates on board. One of the drones deployed for surveillance was reportedly brought down by hostile fire. In response, Indian naval forces executed a carefully coordinated operation that disabled the vessel’s navigation capabilities, forcing the hijacked ship to stop. The mission continued for more than 40 hours and involved marine commandos, naval aircraft and additional warships. Eventually, all 35 Somali pirates surrendered, while the 17 crew members aboard the vessel were rescued safely without any injuries. Conducted roughly 1,400 nautical miles away from Indian shores, the operation highlighted India’s growing maritime reach and the Indian Navy’s ability to respond effectively to piracy threats in international waters.

In the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), where trade routes carry the lifeblood of global commerce, the Indian Navy is quietly reinforcing its role as a stabilising force. Through a robust programme of training and capacity-building, New Delhi is nurturing partnerships with friendly littoral states, positioning itself as the preferred security partner amid growing strategic competition. Data from Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme and Self Aided Programme (SAP) reveal sustained engagement with key neighbours. For Bangladesh, India allotted 42 naval training slots in 2024-25 (34 availed) and 39 the previous year (37 utilised). Mauritius received 78 slots in 2024-25 (62 availed), while Myanmar saw 60 (56 availed). Sri Lanka, under SAP, was offered 311 slots in 2024-25 (148 availed), reflecting high demand despite varying utilisation rates over the past four years. In Kolkata on Monday, India's Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) delivered three new warships to the Indian Navy in a single day, a rare "triple delivery" that shows the country's accelerating push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The most significant handover was the stealth guided-missile frigate Dunagiri (Yard 3023), the fifth ship of the advanced Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) and the second built at GRSE. Named after a Leander-class frigate that served the Navy for 33 years until 2010, the new Dunagiri represents a major technological leap. At around 6,670 tonnes, these multi-mission frigates feature enhanced stealth design, improved survivability and a sophisticated weapons suite including BrahMos supersonic missiles, the MFSTAR radar, MRSAM air defence system, a 76mm gun and anti-submarine torpedoes and rockets. Powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, they offer greater automation and combat capability than their Shivalik-class predecessors. GRSE delivered Dunagiri in just 80 months, down from 93 months for the lead ship Nilgiri, thanks to lessons learned from earlier vessels in the programme. With 75% indigenous content, the project has supported over 200 MSMEs and generated thousands of jobs. Also Read: G7 vows ‘all necessary steps’ to stabilise energy markets as crude oil surges to $116 amid escalating West Asia war The same day saw the delivery of Sanshodhak, the fourth and final Survey Vessel (Large) in a class contracted in 2018. Powered by diesel engines, it can exceed 18 knots. Its indigenous content exceeds 80%. Previous ships in the class, Sandhayak, Nirdeshak and Ikshak, were commissioned between 2024 and 2025. Completing the trio was Agray, the fourth of eight Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC). Roughly 77 metres long, these are the largest Indian Navy warships propelled by waterjets. They carry lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and shallow-water sonar for detecting and engaging underwater threats in coastal waters, bolstering mine-warfare and surveillance capabilities. Agray revives the name of a decommissioned 1241 PE-class patrol vessel. Like its sister ships, it boasts over 80% indigenous content. GRSE has now built 118 warships, including 80 for the Indian Navy.
