The six Next-Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV) that are being built by the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the Indian Navy will be propelled by US-origin General Electric LM2500 marine engines.

The six NGMVs&nbsp;capable of maritime strike operations, anti-surface warfare operations, and sea denial for enemy ships at choke points&nbsp;are being built by the government-run Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL)&nbsp;at a cost of USD 1.16 billion (Rs 9,805 crore).

The facility in Kochi, Kerala, is to hand over the first of the six warships to the Indian Navy in early 2027. CSL had also built India's first and only indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.&nbsp;

The NGMVs are a new class of heavily armed warships incorporating stealth, high-speed, and offensive capability. The primary role of the ships would be to provide offensive capability against enemy warships, merchantmen, and land targets.&nbsp;

With a top speed of 35 knots (64 kmph), these vessels carry an array of anti-surface weapons.&nbsp;

Additionally, GE Aerospace will be supplying its composite base and enclosure, and full complement of gas turbine auxiliary systems. The LM2500 also propels the INS Vikrant, the Indian Navy's latest frigates, and over 700 vessels globally.

GE Aerospace and HAL, India’s premier public-sector aerospace company, have ties in both marine and aerospace defense dating back to 1986. HAL has assembled and tested all LM2500 gas turbines that are used on Indian warships.

The first of two multi-purpose vessels being built by Indian conglomerate Larsen and Toubro (L&amp;T) for the Indian Navy was launched on Monday (Oct 14) at the firm's Kattupalli shipyard, near Chennai. The ceremony was presided over by Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi. The ship has been named ‘Samarthak’ which means ‘supporter’ and is synonymous with the multi-dimensional role that the platform is expected to perform.&nbsp;

The Indian Navy was keen for the deal as it was a critical requirement for cushioning&nbsp;the underwater capability gaps.

These boats which are going to be built under the ambitious Project Advanced Technology Vessel project, are separate from the five nuclear submarines being built under the Arihant class at the same location.

The other major deal cleared today by the Cabinet Committee on Security is for the acquisition of 31 Predator drones from American General Atomics under a Foreign Military Sales contract between the governments of the two nations.

The deal had to be cleared before October 31 as the validity of the American proposal was till that time and now it is expected to be signed in the next few days only.&nbsp; As per the contract, the defence forces will start getting the drones over four years after signing the deal. 

The Indian Navy will get 15 of the 31 drones while the Army and the Indian Air Force will get eight each and also deploy them together at two bases in Uttar Pradesh. Indian equipment made by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and private sector firm Solar Industries may be used as the Make in India element on the 31 drones which are expected to be game changers in peacetime surveillance.

The Indian Navy will get 15 of the 31 drones while the Army and the Indian Air Force will get eight each and also deploy them together at two bases in Uttar Pradesh. Speaking during the ceremony in Visakhapatnam, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the submarine would further strengthen India’s nuclear triad and deterrence capabilities.

He added that the submarine would help New Delhi maintain peace in the region and play a decisive role.

Rajnath Singh also highlighted the “unwavering resolve” of the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to achieve ‘Atma Nirbharta (self-reliance) ’ in the defence sector.

The defence minister also lauded the efforts of the Indian Navy, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and defence industry for their dedication and hard work. He added that the boost to the defence sector would also help the country achieve economic prosperity as more jobs would be generated.

INS Tabar arrived at London Harbour on Aug 7 during its ongoing Operational Deployment to European Nations. Upon its arrival, the frontline warship was welcomed by the Indian diaspora amid cheer and celebrations at the iconic Tower Bridge.

INS Tabar was in Hamburg, Germany from July 17-20. “The conduct of MPX between Indian Navy and German Navy off Kiel Canal signifies Indian Navy’s outreach and sustenance efforts also marking a significant milestone in the maritime cooperation between the two countries,” the release stated.

INS Tabar was commissioned on 19 April 2004, in Kaliningrad, Russia and it arrived at its home port Mumbai on 31 July 2004. Alongside its sister ships, INS Talwar (meaning 'sword') and INS Trishul (meaning 'trident'), INS Tabar is part of the Indian Navy's Western Naval Command headquartered in Mumbai.

During the four-day visit, a series of professional interactions between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy took place at the London port.&nbsp;

The crew of INS Tabar also offer community service to the retired pensioners of the Royal Army at Old Age Home, highlighting the ideology of Indian PM Narendra Modi of Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam. These engagements seek to enhance bilateral relations, particularly in the maritime domain between both countries and also offer an opportunity to showcase Indian culture.

The British and Indian Navies also share a long-standing partnership for a bilateral naval exercise called Konkan, which has been held annually for the past several years.

The Indian Navy successfully evacuated an injured Chinese seaman from a bulk carrier off the Mumbai coast on Wednesday (Jul&nbsp;23).

The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, received a distress call from bulk carrier ZHONG SHAN MEN 200 Nm (approximately 370 km) from Mumbai.&nbsp;

A distress call was made to authorities, stating that a 51-year-old Chinese mariner on board the ship had sustained life-threatening injuries with heavy blood loss, requiring urgent medical intervention, according to reports.

Responding to the medical emergency, a Seaking helicopter flew from Indian Naval Air Station INS Shikra at 0550 hrs. Despite adverse conditions, the Indian Navy personnel successfully airlifted the injured mariner from the bridge wing of the vessel.

The injured Chinese mariner was then flown back to the naval air station by Indian Navy helicopter before being transferred to a hospital for advanced medical care.

The Indian Navy shared dramatic footage and images of the rescue operation on its official X account.

"Challenging weather conditions with winds over 45 knots and&nbsp;heavy rolling of the ship were compounded by non-availability of the continuous deck. The patient was successfully airlifted from the bridge wing of the vessel and&nbsp;transported back to the air station by and subsequently shifted to hospital for further medical management,” wrote SpokespersonNavy.

Indian Navy rescues Chinese sailor in high-seas operation

The body of the Indian Navy sailor, who was missing since India's warship INS Brahmaputra caught fire at the Mumbai naval dockyard earlier this week, has been found.

"The body of Sitendra Singh, Leading Seaman, has been found today after intensive diving operations," Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said.

Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi and all personnel of the Indian Navy extend their deepest condolences to the family of Singh, he added.

The CNS directed that all actions by the Command and Naval Headquarters to make INS Brahmaputra seaworthy and combat-ready are to be initiated immediately," the Navy said in a statement.

"The Indian Navy stands resolutely with the bereaved family in this hour of grief," it added.

The Navy said in a statement on Monday (July 22) that the ship was resting on its side after a major fire&nbsp;on the ship on July 21. The fire was brought under control with the assistance of firefighters from Mumbai's naval dockyard but it suffered "listing" to its port side.

Indian Navy sailor missing after INS Brahmaputra catches fire, topples at Mumbai dockyard

In a sign of the growing defence cooperation between India and Saudi Arabia,&nbsp;76 trainees from the King Fahd Naval Academy of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) completed their Afloat Training Course at the First Training Squadron (1TS) of the Indian Navy on Thursday (Jul 18).

The instructions&nbsp;were&nbsp;imparted at India's Southern Naval Command, Kochi, which is the training command of the Indian Navy. This is the second batch of Saudi Naval cadets who are undergoing training in India. The first batch completed their training in 2023.&nbsp;

Spanning three weeks, the training at Kochi comprised a harbour phase and a sea phase. The harbour phase focussed on simulator-based training on navigation, firefighting and damage control. During the sea phase, the trainees were introduced to nuances of life at sea, which included first-hand experience in ship handling, communication procedures and seamanship.

Besides this, the trainees were introduced to sail training at the Watermanship Training Centre and onboard INS Tarangini.&nbsp;

Participation of RSNF trainees alongside Indian Naval trainees of 107 Integrated Officers Training Course (IOTC) has immensely contributed towards enhanced&nbsp;bonhomie and friendship amongst the trainees of both maritime nations. The training program also facilitated cultural exchange and engagements through organised visits to historical and local places of interest and friendly sports fixtures with Indian trainees.

In a sign of the growing defence cooperation between India and Saudi Arabia, 76 trainees from the King Fahd Naval Academy of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) completed their Afloat Training Course at the First Training Squadron (1TS) of the Indian Navy on Thursday (Jul 18).

In a sign of the growing defence cooperation between India and Saudi Arabia, 76 trainees from the King Fahd Naval Academy of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) completed their Afloat Training Course at the First Training Squadron (1TS) of the Indian Navy on Thursday (Jul 18). The instructions were imparted at India's Southern Naval Command, Kochi, which is the training command of the Indian Navy. This is the second batch of Saudi Naval cadets who are undergoing training in India. The first batch completed their training in 2023. Spanning three weeks, the training at Kochi comprised a harbour phase and a sea phase. The harbour phase focussed on simulator-based training on navigation, firefighting and damage control. During the sea phase, the trainees were introduced to nuances of life at sea, which included first-hand experience in ship handling, communication procedures and seamanship. Besides this, the trainees were introduced to sail training at the Watermanship Training Centre and onboard INS Tarangini. Participation of RSNF trainees alongside Indian Naval trainees of 107 Integrated Officers Training Course (IOTC) has immensely contributed towards enhanced bonhomie and friendship amongst the trainees of both maritime nations. The training program also facilitated cultural exchange and engagements through organised visits to historical and local places of interest and friendly sports fixtures with Indian trainees. Saudi Naval cadets complete training in India for second year in a row
