<p><meta name="uuid" content="uuidUlp1rWRbML5n" />In recent years, the Indian Navy has been playing a crucial role in furthering the wide-ranging India-Saudi ties. The Kochi-headquartered Southern Naval Command(SNC), which is the hub of the Indian Navy's diverse and sophisticated training facilities, has been spearheading these efforts. Since 2023, batches of Saudi Naval cadets have been undergoing training along with their Indian counterparts at the Indian Navy's 1st Training Squadron in Kochi,&nbsp;a city that prides itself for having built India's first indigenous aircraft carrier - INS Vikrant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The first batch of 55 Royal Saudi Navy Officer trainees arrived in Kochi,&nbsp;Kerala, from the King Fahad Academy of the Royal Saudi Naval Force (RSNF) in the year 2023. The Saudi Government had deputed them for training aboard India's 1st Training Squadron, Southern Naval Command. Following the success of the 2023 edition, 76 Saudi trainees came to Kochi in 2024, thereby giving a fillip to the Indo-Saudi ties and bonhomie.</p>

<p>The Indian Navy's 1st Training Squadron (1st TS) comprises numerous training ships that offer hands-on training for newly-minted Indian Navy officers, before they go on to serve aboard frontline warships. The Indian Navy's Southern Naval Command also boasts of Asia's Largest Naval Academy, the sprawling Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala, where Indian Naval and Coast Guard officers are imparted ab-initio training.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The primary aim of the First Training Squadron is to impart sea training to Naval and Coast Guard officer cadets (within a span of months). All the trainees are trained in Seamanship, Navigation, Ship Handling, Boat Work, Technical aspects etc. whilst being exposed to the rigours of life at sea, so as to earn their metaphorical ‘sea legs’. The Saudi trainees not only trained along with their Indian counterparts, but also undertook three sea sorties along with the Indian Navy trainees aboard the 1st Training Squadron ships. During these sea sorties, the Saudi cadets performed various exercises including Visit, Board, Search &amp; Seize Operations (VBSS), transfer of personnel from one ship to another, replenishment at sea, etc.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Regarding the course conducted onboard 1TS, a senior Naval officer from SNC mentioned, “The course not only imparts crucial technical skills, but also emphasises the importance of discipline, teamwork, and leadership, which is vital for achieving success in naval operations.”&nbsp; This year the course has been made more practically oriented to prepare trainees to handle various challenges at sea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The most important aspect of cross-training is the capacity to learn together and about each other. An Indian Navy officer trainee onboard 1TS commented, “We have formed really close bonds. <h2><strong>Evolution of India-Saudi defence ties</strong></h2>

<p>India-Saudi Arabia relations have grown from strength to strength in recent decades. Such growing closeness with Saudi Arabia is part of India’s broader focus on nurturing ties with West Asia. India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy focused not just on ‘Look West’, but also, on ‘Act West’. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to UAE in August 2015 was the first-ever by an Indian PM in 34 years. Later in 2019, India signed a pact with Saudi Arabia for the establishment of a Strategic Partnership Council (SPC), expanding the ambit of bilateral relations to cover political, security, social, economic, investment, and cultural cooperation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among these domains, military ties stand out, as India and Saudi Arabia conducted their first-ever bilateral Naval exercise, 'Al Mohed Al Hind', in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, in August 2021. Later, as a measure of reciprocity, in February 2022, Saudi Arabia became one among more than three dozen countries to participate in the Indian Navy’s ‘Milan’ Exercise on the shores of India’s eastern city of Visakhapatnam. Jan-Feb 2024 also witnessed the first edition of the India-Saudi Arabia Joint Military Exercise, 'Sada Tanseeq', held in the deserts of Rajasthan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These military exercises prove crucial in imbibing the best practices from each other, increasing interoperability, and fostering trust - all three being emblematic of growing relations between the two countries. Among these, trust manifests most significantly when two countries decide to train together in the military domain. Because training together exposes one force to the strengths and weaknesses of the other. As a natural consequence, the rigorous and stressful nature of military training also fosters strong bonhomie and camaraderie, which lasts a lifetime.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The growing roles and responsibilities of the Royal Saudi Navy have necessitated the need for well-trained military personnel and greater exposure to global practices and training.&nbsp;</p>

Around fifty-five large and small ships are on order in Indian Shipyards, including three support ships at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd and two Krivacks in Russia at Yantar in Russia. Due to the Russo-Ukraine war, Russian supplies have slowed. All Indian Navy ships are equipped to handle diverse maritime challenges, provide humanitarian aid, hunt pirates and attackers at sea and have a modicum of nuclear deterrence from the sea. The Navy adheres to a Maritime Capability Perspective Plan (MCPP) and has built world-class 500 km anti-ship cum surface Brahmos and 60 km Barak AA missiles and fitted them on front-line ships. It has fitted the underwater 650 km K-15/BO-05 nuclear-capable missiles in the home-built nuclear submarines INS Arihant and INS Arighat, which await commissioning. The nuclear-capable 3000 km K-4 has been tested from an underwater launcher. All of the Navy's airborne, surface, and subsurface platforms are networked over a common data link using multiple means of communication, including Rukmini. The Navy has around 220 aircraft, including 40 Mig-29Ks and 12 P8i Boeings operating from INS Hansa at Goa and from a Southern Air Station and Heron and Searcher drones, including 2 MQ-Guardians drones on lease from General Atomics. The Guardians operated on the Indo-China border in 2020. An order for 26 Rafale-M fighters for the two aircraft carriers has been placed on Dassault; 12 out of 26 MH-60R multi-role helicopters from Lockheed with Kongsberg naval missiles and Mk 58 torpedoes have arrived for induction, replacing the Soakings MK 42B. The IN is unique because its pedigree is from the Royal Navy, founded as the Royal Indian Navy (RIN) on 2nd October 1934. The RIN took part in WWII with distinction, lauded by C-in-C Lord Louis Mountbatten. In 1950, India became a Republic and dropped the prefix Royal. In the 1960s, the IN deputed around 3000 officers and sailors to the United Kingdom's shipyards to commission the 28,000-ton aircraft carrier INS Vikrant (1961) with Seahawks and Alizes, and they brought back eight new potent frigates. After being shunned by the West, India had to forcibly turn to the Soviet Union for warships, submarines, aircraft and helicopters, and large cadres went to the Soviet Union to bring back ships, submarines and planes. Many were trained in specialist schools and imbibed the best operational features of the Soviet Navy that paid dividends in the 1971 war and heralded Missile Warfare from the Seas. IN's Osa class boats ingeniously struck PN ships off Karachi in the opening bell of that war. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the IN turned to the USA to gain technology and acquire equipment. At the same time, the Government continued to balance Russia and the USA in a cold war developing situation. The IN is also unique as the IN learnt to operate the Combined Enterprise Regional Information Exchange (CENTRIX) satellite systems loaned by the US Navy to IN ships in the Malabar exercises and then operated the ISRO-supplied GSAT 7 satellite with an Israel-supplied antenna for net-centric warfare. IN's forte is its deep training, and men and women of calibre, man ships fly aircraft and man submarines. Hence, it can be said that the Navy, called "India's Cinderella Service", has emerged from its chrysalis, pulled itself up by its bootstraps and gotten its act together. IN is the envy of many Navies, as seen in exercises like Malabar with the US, Japanese and Australian QUAD navies, RIMPAC with multiple navies, Garuda with the French Navy and Konkan with the Royal Navy and the Russian Navy. The Indian Navy is India's maritime instrument, and it can play the right hand with the Indian Air Force's sea-going assets in a Sea-Air Battle Strategy. With better economic conditions in the last decade, the Indian Navy's capabilities have grown under the audacious and determined leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who realises the geo-strategic importance of the seas around us. With the efforts of the Navy and DRDO, ample shipbuilding steel is now available locally to Indian shipbuilders, and the timeline of shipbuilding has been reduced. All front-line ships have advanced world-class radars and advanced technology, like the Multi-Function M/F ELM 2248 Star radar from Elta (Israel). The M/F STAR radar is reported to deliver better-quality situation plots and weapon support than the US Aegis system. The Navy's 40,000-ton aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) that flies Mig 29K with K-35 missiles, has the Selex RAN 40L, which is an L band search radar developed by Leonardo. The Indian Navy is a uniquely potent force with cutting-edge technology & powerful weaponry

India and Russia are all-weather partners. From fighter jets to submarines to an aircraft carrier, India and Russia share a long legacy of cooperation in the Maritime domain. At present, four Russian-origin warships meant for Indian navy are being built - two in India and two in Russia.

Amid Indian Navy's negotiations with Dassault Aviation to buy its Rafale Marine Fighter Jets, a report has claimed that the French defence major may be selling the aircraft at twice the price of what it had sold for Indian Air Force.

Amid Indian Navy's negotiations with Dassault Aviation to buy its Rafale Marine Fighter Jets, a report has claimed that the French defence major may be selling the aircraft at twice the price of what it had sold for Indian Air Force. Indian Air Force had bought the French-made fighter jets in 2016. Now, Indian Navy is in talks to buy its marine version. The reported cost of the deal at Rs $6 billion for 26 aircraft seems nearly double of what IAF paid earlier as the "base price" of 36 Jets, Businessworld newspaper said in a report on Thursday (May 30) citing defence experts.
