<p>In a major step towards indigenisation in the defence sector, the Indian Navy successfully developed a new explosive which is two times more lethal than standard TNT (Trinitrotoluene).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new explosive named SEBEX 2 was developed by Nagpur-based Solar Industries and is now among the most powerful weapon non-nuclear explosives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SEBEX 2 is expected to revolutionise artillery shells and warheads by further enhancing their destructive power without adding extra weight to them, official reports said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new formulation for SEBEX 2 was tested under the Defence Export Promotion Scheme of the Navy, as per Economic Times. A total of three new explosive formulations have been developed at the Economic Explosive Limited (EEL), which is a subsidiary of Solar Industries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The three new explosive formulations can prove to be a game changer for our armed forces due to the sheer enhancement of firepower and explosive effect. SEBEX 2 is a new explosive formulation that provides a much more powerful blast effect than any currently available solid explosive," ANI quoted the company's officials saying.</p>

<h2><strong>SEBEX 2: One of the most lethal non-nuclear bombs</strong></h2>

<p>Conventional explosives like DENTEX/TORPEX, which are generally used in conventional warheads, aerial bombs and various other types of ammunition, have TNT of 1.25-1.30, explained&nbsp;EEL officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, measuring an explosive’s performance in terms of TNT equivalence, the explosives having higher TNT equivalence have more “lethal destructive power,” they noted.</p>

<p>SEBEX 2 is developed under the 'Make in India' initiative and&nbsp;its composition is based on high-melting explosives (HMX).</p>

The navy’s elite Marine Commandoes (MARCOS) aboard warship INS Talwar conducted the operation ‘'Crimson Barracuda' and carried out the seizure, a spokesperson of the Indian Navy said.</p>

<p>According to media reports, it is for the first time that the Indian Navy, a member of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), has conducted a "drug interdiction".</p>

<p>The CMF in a statement said, “INS Talwar, operating in support of the Canadian-led Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, conducted its first interdiction of illicit narcotics as a member of CMF, seizing 940 kg of drugs in the Arabian Sea.”</p>

<h2><strong>About Combined Maritime Forces</strong></h2>

<p>The CMF is a 42-nation naval group, which aims to uphold international rule-based order in the international waters. The group’s primary responsibility is to secure and stabilise 3.2 million square miles of water encompassing some of the world's most important shipping lanes.</p>

<p>Speaking of the Western Arabian Sea, it’s an important shipping route for oil tankers coming from Gulf nations.</p>

<p>The spokesperson of the Indian Navy said the drugs are being disposed off as per regulations.</p>

<h2><strong>How did the Indian Navy conduct this operation?</strong></h2>

<p>Last December, Somali pirates had hijacked the Bulgarian ship MV Ruen and last week&nbsp; they ventured out of Somali waters with piracy intentions, but the Indian Navy stepped in to thwart it.</p>

<p>On March 15, INS Kolkata intercepted the pirate ship, disabling its steering system and navigational aids, forcing it to halt. The operation involved a navy destroyer, a patrol ship, an Indian Air Force C-17 transporter flying over 1,500 miles to airdrop marine commandos, a naval drone, a reconnaissance drone, and a P-8 surveillance jet.</p>

<p>A press note by the Ministry of Defence read, “The Indian Navy as part of Maritime Security Operations has been carrying out extensive surveillance in the region including monitoring of traffic in Areas of Interest. Based on analysis of surveillance information, the Indian Navy was able to track the movement of the pirate ship Ruen and directed INS Kolkata to intercept the ship about 260 nautical miles (NM) east of Somalia.”</p>

<p>The Indian Navy safely evacuated all 17 original crew members of MV Ruen without any harm. Additionally, the 35 Somali pirates surrendered themselves the same day.</p>

<p>The pirates will face legal action under Indian laws, including the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act and the Arms Act.</p>
