<p>On December 14, the Malta-flagged vessel reported that six unknown personnel had boarded the ship prompting the Indian Navy to deploy its Maritime Patrol Aircraft to investigate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Subsequently, the personnel from the responding team established communication with all 18 crew members on board the vessel. No Indians were on the vessel at the time, the Ministry of Defence had said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On December 16, INS Kochi intercepted ex-MV Ruen and closely followed it during its transit towards Somalia. The Indian Navy also ensured that a crew member who got injured during the ordeal was released by the pirates and received medical attention on board the warship.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He adds that the entire Arabian sea region is a contested one, with China delivering four frigate-class warships and eight diesel-electric submarines to the Pakistani Navy, and Turkish-origin drones that would become a part of Maldives' inventory.</p>

<p>Notably, Maldives has taken a blatantly pro-China stance since President Muizzu came to power last year. Amid such a rivalry in the region, India is looking to make the most of the Lakshadweep and Minicoy islands on the west and the Andaman and Nicobar islands on the east, he opines.</p>

<p>However, he highlighted that it would be extremely challenging to base aircraft on a permanent basis at an island base that will need to contend with the vagaries of southwest monsoon, the associated harsh weather conditions, and the inevitable dependence on intermediate level support infrastructure that require vast tracts of land.</p>

<p>"I doubt if naval aircraft that are maintenance intensive would be stationed permanently at INS Jatayu. Such basing requires infrastructure built not just to brave storms and harsh weather, but to manage the complexity that causes corrosion, etc. India does have an airstrip at Agatti, further North in the Lakshadweep islands, but is it used to permanently base aircraft?," he asks.</p>

<p>He believes that INS Jatayu would serve well as an Advanced Landing Ground or forward base with facilities for aircraft turnaround, servicing and related support facilities. It will be beneficial in terms of surveillance, response, building up of assets. There is also the plan for an airfield and&nbsp;the jetties to be strengthened and improved."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Experts have noted that the Naval detachment will also enhance operational reach, and support the Indian Navy's efforts in anti-piracy and anti-narcotics operations in the&nbsp;Arabian Sea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier in the day, while addressing the gathering at Minicoy after the commissioning of INS Jatayu, the navy chief said that the unit was named after the mythical creature in the epic Ramayana who tried to stop the abduction of Sita.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In the Ramayana, Jatayu was the 'first responder', trying to stop the abduction of Sita ji, even to the peril of his own life, exemplifying service before self. So the naming of this unit as Jatayu is an apt recognition of this spirit of providing security surveillance and selfless service," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The navy chief had said that the information Jatayu relayed to Lord Ram provided crucial situational awareness and the Indian Navy also expects that this unit will provide situational awareness to maintain good maritime domain awareness of the entire region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While speaking to WION on the Red Sea crisis, Admiral Kumar said that the situation is a "little volatile" but in a sense it is manageable.</p>

<p>He said that it is because of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that so far Indian flagged vessels are safe and there have been no reports of any damage to Indian vessels.</p>

So the naming of this unit as Jatayu is an apt recognition of this spirit of providing security surveillance and selfless service," he said. He said that it is because of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. He said that so far Indian flagged vessels are safe and there have been no reports of any damage to Indian vessels. He said that the Indian Navy has been "providing support to them, and providing escort to cargo such as fertiliser and grain, and our assets have been deployed there."

<p>As quoted by the news agencies, Admiral Kumar said, "We follow all roles, all ranks. Hoping that 30-35 years down the line we will have a woman chief of naval staff speaking to you all."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He noted the current presence of a female commanding officer of a ship based in Goa and the introduction of women sailors within the ranks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also said that women are welcome in all areas of the Navy, even as marine commandos, provided they possess the skills, confidence, competence, and ability to perform their tasks as sailors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a joint operation conducted at sea, the Indian Navy and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) intercepted a suspicious vessel carrying approximately 3300 kilogrammes of contraband, the largest in recent times.</p>

<p>The said contraband comprised of 3,089 kg&nbsp;of Charas, 158 kg&nbsp;of Methamphetamine, and 25 kg&nbsp;of Morphine.</p>

<p>The Indian Navy plays a crucial role in patrolling and securing maritime activities and preventing illegal activities such as drug trafficking, piracy, and smuggling.</p>

<p>Acting on intelligence provided by the Indian Navy's maritime surveillance aircraft and corroborated by the NCB, an Indian Navy warship was deployed to intercept a suspicious dhow. The dhow was heading towards Indian waters with a significant quantity of contraband.</p>

<p>The naval units successfully located, tracked, and intercepted the suspicious vessel at sea.</p>

<p>Following the operations onboard the dhow, the "largest seizure of narcotics in recent times" was made. After the interception, the Indian Navy warship towed the dhow to the nearest Indian port. There, the crew and the seized contraband were handed over to law enforcement agencies.</p>

Indian officials said Saturday (Feb 24) that the Palau-flagged vessel MV Islander came under attack, resulting in the injury of at least one crew member.</p>

<p>The vessel caught fire after the attack, prompting it to issue a distress call. Responding swiftly to the attack, the Indian Navy dispatched an explosive ordnance disposal team aboard a navy destroyer, which sanitised the victim ship for any residual risk and cleared it for further transit.</p>

<p>The attack on MV Islander came amid a slew of such attacks on merchant ships by Iran-backed and Yemen-based Houthi rebels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.</p>
