India starts withdrawing troops from Maldives as ties with Male remain tense

The inaugural session of the three-day event saw Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh embarking at sea to witness the Indian Navy’s ability to conduct ‘twin-carrier operations’. Both aircraft carriers showcased the growing capabilities of the Navy to safeguard India’s maritime interests. The demonstration served as a powerful testament to the crucial role of sea-based air power in maintaining maritime superiority.

Indian Navy Sets new milestone with 'Twin Carrier Operations' conducted off Western Coast

In a week filled with significant milestones for the Indian Navy, the spotlight has not only been on its hard power but also on the subtle yet profound homage paid to India's rich maritime legacy. The Indian Navy marked a pivotal week with the inauguration of the new INS Jatayu naval base, twin carrier operations featuring INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant, and the Biannual Naval Commanders’ Conference presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh aboard INS Vikramaditya.

Amongst the headlines of new naval bases and operational prowess, a deeper narrative unfolded, tracing back to the roots of Indian maritime history. The inauguration of the INS Jatayu naval base in Minicoy, Lakshadweep, marked a strategic move in securing the vital Sea Lines of Communications (SLOCs). Situated on the southernmost island of Lakshadweep, INS Jatayu's significance extends beyond its geographical location. Named after the 'Jatayu' from the epic Ramayana, the base embodies the spirit of "Service before Self," echoing Jatayu's valiant attempt to thwart the abduction of Sita, even at the cost of his own life.

Naval Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar, speaking at the commissioning ceremony, emphasized the role of INS Jatayu as a sentinel, providing crucial security and surveillance in the region. Drawing parallels to Jatayu's pivotal role in providing situational awareness to Lord Rama, Admiral Kumar underscored the base's importance as the eyes and ears of the Navy on the western front, complementing INS Baaz in the east at Andamans.

He said, "The naming of this unit as 'Jatayu', is an apt recognition of this spirit of providing security, surveillance and selfless service. Jatayu's information to Lord Rama provided him with crucial situational awareness leading to the successful quest that followed"

The inauguration of the Naval War College building, Chola in Goa, adds another layer to the narrative, paying homage to the Chola Empire, one of India's greatest maritime powers. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, presiding over the ceremony, highlighted the historical significance of the Chola imprint on the Indian Navy. The newly inaugurated building stands as a testament to the Chola legacy, symbolizing their maritime prowess and strategic acumen.

In 2022, the Indian Navy embarked on a symbolic journey by adopting a new ensign, paying tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha kingdom and a naval pioneer. The design elements of the ensign, featuring a Golden Octagon shape inspired by Shivaji Maharaj's Rajmudra, symbolize the Indian Navy's maritime outreach, encompassing the eight directions and reflecting its commitment to safeguarding national interests across the seas.

Chola and Jatayu: Indian Navy's ode to maritime history in a week of naval milestones

India fortifies its security infrastructure in the Indian Ocean - INS Jatayu commissioned on the Minicoy island. Located near the Maldives. The strategic base will enhance the operational reach of the Navy in the Indian Ocean. A clear eye on China.

At the strategically important Minicoy island, the southernmost among the Lakshadweep archipelago, the Indian Navy has commissioned INS Jatayu, the country's newest naval base. In the long run, this facility is meant to enhance the operational reach of the Indian Navy and facilitate the Navy's anti-piracy, anti-narcotics operations in the region.

Interestingly, by naming the base after a bird (Jatayu - a reference to the vulture from the Ramayana epic), the Indian establishment has clearly indicated that it intends to eventually operate air assets from this location, which is barely 150km away from Maldivian islands. The commissioning of INS Jatayu comes shortly after the inauguration of an airstrip and jetty that India built at Agalega, Mauritius.

The Indian Navy's presence at Minicoy, which straddles the vital Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOCs) or busy maritime highways, is not a recent development. Naval Detachment Minicoy was setup in the early 1980s.

However, with INS Jatayu being commissioned, more infrastructure, personnel and resources are to be added. Jatayu will be the Indian Navy's second base in the Lakshadweep archipelago, where the force already operates the base INS Dweeprakshak at Kavaratti, approximately 250km north of INS Jatayu at Minicoy.

Indian Naval Aviation and the legacy of naming Naval air bases after birds

For more than seven decades, the Indian Navy has been operating air assets and the country's first Naval Air Station (meant for stationing aerial assets) was established at Kochi, Kerala in 1953. Known as INS Garuda, it is the Navy's oldest air station and continues to be in active use.

The US-origin 'MH-60R' multi-role maritime helicopters procured from America will also be operating from Garuda, thereby enhancing the anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue medical evacuation, maritime surveillance capabilities of the Indian Navy. Overall, it is a platform that can be used for both benign and offensive roles.

An interesting pattern can be observed in the naming of Indian Naval Air Stations - all of them are named after birds. 'Garuda', 'Parundu', 'Rajali', 'Dega', 'Hansa', 'Baaz', 'Shikra', 'Jatayu' etc. are all words from various Indian languages and each one of them refers to a bird species. Prefix INS to each one of them and we get the names of the Indian Naval air stations that dot the country's east and west coasts, the island territories.

Typically, different classes of aircraft with varying capabilities are stationed at naval air stations. For example, INS Hansa, in Dabolim, Goa, which is India's largest Naval Air station houses multiple variants - the Mig-29K deck-based fighter jets, Kamov-31 airborne early warning helicopters, P8I 'Poseidon' long range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare planes, the Dornier-228 Maritime surveillance planes, Chetak and Dhruv helicopters.

INS Jatayu - the possibilities and challenges

By naming the base as INS Jatayu, the Indian Navy has made it obvious that the facility would be eventually used as a Naval Air Station. However, there are constraints in establishing a large and full-fledged air station in this small island, which is densely populated on one side and has very little land available for such a military aviation facility.

Commodore Vasan (Retd), Director General of the Chennai Centre for China Studies (C3S) told WION. INS Jatayu: Possibilities and challenges for India’s Naval airbase in Minicoy, Lakshadweep

Indian Navy chief Admiral Radhakrishnan Hari Kumar on Wednesday (Mar 6) spoke exclusively to WION's principal diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal on board INS Vikrant, which is India's first indigenously designed aircraft carrier.

The Indian Navy on Wednesday commissioned its new base INS Jatayu at Minicoy Island which will bolster its operational capabilities within the strategically important Lakshadweep islands.

While speaking on how INS Jatayu will act as the Indian Navy's eyes and ears in the Arabian Sea, Admiral Kumar said, "INS Jatayu is in Minicoy Island. It is the southernmost island of the Lakshadweep chain and the western seaboard. It is about 200 miles off the coast of India. So, therefore, it is located right next to the 90-degree channel through which all the traffic, entering and exiting the Arabian Sea, comes through."

He further said, "While we always had a Naval Detachment there, but commissioning the base will help us with operational support and infrastructure, administration support facilities. It will be beneficial in terms of surveillance, response, building up of assets. There is also the plan for an airfield and the jetties to be strengthened and improved."
