<p>The aircraft would be fitted with the required radars and sensors. India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) will turn them into maritime patrol planes.</p>

<p>"There are plans for acquiring long-range maritime surveillance aircraft, which the Air Force has taken, and the contracts will be signed with TASL (Tata Advanced Systems Limited), wherein we are about to get six C295 transport aircraft,"&nbsp;Indian Coast Guard Chief Director General Rakesh Pal was quoted as saying by ANI.</p>

<p>He said, "The Ministry of Defence is giving us adequate funds to ensure that our acquisition processes are all fast-tracked."</p>

<h2><strong>Significance of the move</strong></h2>

<p>The procurement of 15 aircraft for the navy and coast guard will boost the surveillance, reconnaissance, and patrol capabilities of the two forces.</p>

<p>Earlier on Wednesday (Feb 14), the Ministry of Defence also inked an INR 1,752.13 crore contract with a Kanpur-based firm for manufacturing and supply&nbsp;of 463 indigenously built 12.7 mm stabilised remote control guns for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard.</p>

<p>The Navy's commitment also extends beyond physical presence, encompassing information exchange and intelligence sharing with friendly foreign countries.</p>

<p>Demonstrating international cooperation, the Indian Navy has taken bilateral and multilateral maritime exercises, surveillance in joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and carried out coordinated patrolling with friendly foreign countries.</p>

<p>This approach has been taken by the navy in a bid to counter non-traditional threats.</p>

<p>The incident took place as the Sri Lankan-flagged multiday fishing trawler, Lorenzo Putha 04, reported a hijacking approximately 955 nautical miles east of Mogadishu, Somalia. Earlier Sri Lankan navy spokesman Gayan Wickramasuriya reportedly said, “Our information is that they were captured by Somali pirates."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Three pirates had taken control of the fishing trawler on Saturday last week (Jan 27).</p>

<p>Responding swiftly to the distress call, the Indian Navy deployed INS Sharada from Kochi on January 28 and tasked HALE Sea Guardian to locate and intercept the hijacked fishing vessel.</p>

<p>The collaborative efforts extended to efficient operational coordination and information sharing through the Sri Lanka and Seychelles International Liaison Officers at IFC IOR, New Delhi.</p>

<p>Currently, the hijacked vessel is under escort to Mahe, Seychelles after a successful joint operation to rescue the Sri Lankan fishing crew and secure the vessel from the threat of piracy.</p>

<p>The bulk carrier MV Ruen also fell victim to a hijacking by Somali pirates last month. The vessel, owned by Bulgaria and flying the flag of Malta, was taken over 380 nautical miles east of the Yemeni island of Socotra on December 16.</p>

<p>Following the seizure, the pirates, after releasing one injured sailor to the custody of the Indian navy, transported the MV Ruen along with its remaining 17 crew members to the semi-autonomous state of Puntland in Somalia.</p>

<p>As quoted by news agencies, Commander Vivek Madhwal, who is the Indian Navy spokesman, said: "Pirates had boarded the fishing vessel and the crew taken as hostages."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Madhwal named the vessel as the Iranian-flagged Iman, and further added that its warship had "ensured the successful release of all 17 crew members along with the boat".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The official said that India had deployed its warship INS Sumitra after receiving a distress message from the fishing vessel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At that particular time, INS Sumitra was said to be on anti-piracy patrol off the east coast of Somalia in the Gulf of Aden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"INS Sumitra, on anti-piracy operations along the East Coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, responded to a distress message regarding the hijacking of an Iranian-flagged Fishing Vessel Iman. The vessel had been boarded by pirates and the crew was taken as hostages," Madhwal said.</p>

<p>The video has been posted on other social media platforms as well and is being widely shared. According to All India Radio News, Lt.cdr Rajkumar (Retd) is now a professional skydiving analyst and also an instructor for military and sports persons.</p>

<p>At the start of the video, Rajkumar can be seen gearing up. With everything ready, he can be seen walking towards an aircraft. He is wearing a helmet, a harness, parachute backpack and carries in his hands something that looks like a bag with military fatigues.</p>

<p>When the aircraft reaches the pre-determined altitude, Rajkumar and his fellow skydivers can be seen giving each other high-fives. With some last-minute adjustments, the fearless men take steps towards the opening at the side of the plane that shows a straight drop towards the ground. Rajkumar jumps out, so do others, and when he opens his parachute mid-air, the flag with Jai Shree Ram can be seen unfurled.</p>

The feat of Lt.cdr Rajkumar (Retd) who jumped from an altitude of 10,000 feet with the flag has been posted as a video by All India Radio on its official handle on Instagram. The video has been posted on other social media platforms as well and is being widely shared. According to All India Radio News, Lt.cdr Rajkumar (Retd) is now a professional skydiving analyst and also an instructor for military and sports persons. At the start of the video, Rajkumar can be seen gearing up. With everything ready, he can be seen walking towards an aircraft. He is wearing a helmet, a harness, parachute backpack and carries in his hands something that looks like a bag with military fatigues. When the aircraft reaches the pre-determined altitude, Rajkumar and his fellow skydivers can be seen giving each other high-fives. With some last-minute adjustments, the fearless men take steps towards the opening at the side of the plane that shows a straight drop towards the ground. Rajkumar jumps out, so do others, and when he opens his parachute mid-air, the flag with Jai Shree Ram can be seen unfurled.
