The ceremonial ‘ship launch’, where a newly-built ship is transferred from land to water, was performed for the Indian Navy's indigenously-built cadet training ship 'Krishna'. The ship pays tribute to the River Krishna, the third longest river in the country. Krishna is the first in the series of three Cadet Training ships that are being built in India by private firm L&T Shipbuilding. The ship launch took place at the L&T shipyard in Kattupalli, near Chennai, in the presence of India's Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, and senior officials. Cadet Training Ships are meant to provide comprehensive sea training to Naval cadets, by honing their professional skills in real-world conditions at sea. Cadets undergo training aboard training ships after completing their basic training at shore-based facilities. When the need arises, Cadet Training Ships also perform other roles such as non-combatant evacuation operations, hospital ship, Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, search and rescue. At the time of launching, a ship is not in a state of operational readiness. At present, Krishna is referred to as 'Yard 18003'. After launch, the ship would have to be integrated with various equipment, systems, and sub-systems, and they would have to be rigorously tested and proven. Thereafter, the ship's weapon systems and armaments are to be integrated and tested. During these phases, when the ship is nearing the final stages of readiness, it is commissioned (formally inducted) into the Indian Navy; that's when it would be designated as INS Krishna. Yard 18003 is expected to be delivered to the Indian Navy by the end of this year. Krishna and the two successor vessels in this series are 122meters in length, 18meters wide, and have a displacement of 4700tons. These ships are meant to have a crew strength of 20 Officers, 150 Sailors, and 200 Cadets each. The ships will be equipped with training-specific facilities such as classrooms, cadets training bridge, and will accommodate men and women trainees. Cadet training ships are part of the 1st training squadron, also known as 1TS of the Indian Navy. The squadron is based out of Kochi, Kerala, and functions under the Southern Naval Command, which is the training command of the Indian Navy.

Over the last nine months, as part of their respective missions, the Indian Army and the Indian Navy have used the services of Europe’s Eutelsat OneWeb internet-beaming satellites. Eutelsat OneWeb operates a constellation of 648 satellites, which can beam high-speed internet to portable receivers almost anywhere on Earth. The Indian military using this European commercial service is a significant development, as the Indian Government does not possess similar internet-beaming satellite constellations to support its requirements. The French Government, British Government, and India’s Bharti Group are among the major investors in Eutelsat OneWeb. The Indian Army first used OneWeb’s services while undertaking humanitarian assistance duties in earthquake-hit Myanmar under ‘Operation Brahma’ in April 2025. Likewise, in November-December, the Army team rendering assistance to Cyclone-hit Sri Lanka during ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ were using OneWeb terminals. The Indian Navy’s INSV Kaundinya is the latest to have deployed OneWeb terminals during its 1,400 km voyage between Gujarat, India and Muscat, Oman. INSV Kaundinya is a traditionally built stitched-plank sailing vessel inspired by ancient Indian shipbuilding techniques. The voyage retraced historic maritime trade routes, showcasing India’s rich seafaring legacy while promoting maritime innovation and national pride. Eutelsat’s OneWeb Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity technology has been deployed and remains operational onboard Kaundinya, enabling reliable, real-time communications throughout the journey, the firm announced. Given the vessel’s traditional design and the absence of conventional communication infrastructure, OneWeb’s LEO technology served as the sole connectivity link for the expedition. Notably, OneWeb satellite internet is specifically meant to connect the unconnected, and serve disaster-hit regions, remote places where no communication infrastructure (internet cables or telecom towers) exists: such as high seas, deserts, mountains. The company offers its niche services to Governments, defence customers, business entities. According to Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the Indian Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) and a core member of the Kaundinya crew and its project architect, “Throughout the voyage, having reliable satellite connectivity from Airtel OneWeb has been invaluable for the crew. It has allowed us to stay connected with shore-based teams, supporting communication, live feeds, and above all morale during long and sometimes challenging periods at sea.”
ISRO launched 72 OneWeb satellites
Few years ago, on a commercial basis, Indian space agency ISRO had placed a total of 72 OneWeb satellites in orbit. In contrast, it is unviable and too expensive to lay down similar communication infrastructure in sparsely populated regions, mountains, forests, islands. A fleet of satellites in Low Earth orbit can help bridge a large part of this connectivity gap and offer high-speed internet for such remote regions. Which is why there are multiple business entities such as Europe's Eutelsat OneWeb, Elon Musk's Starlink, Jeff Bezos' Amazon Leo (formerly Project Kuiper), China's Guowang and Qianfan that are competing for this lucrative market. In simple terms, they want to ensure that there no major internet connectivity blind spots in most parts of the world. Such LEO-based constellations serve military applications as well, as they offer significantly better capabilities than conventional communication satellites placed in higher geostationary orbits (36,000 km above Earth).

In 1956, a special review honoured the Shah of Iran during his state visit, an early example of maritime diplomacy. The 1960s showcased INS Vikrant, India's first aircraft carrier, while later decades highlighted indigenous builds like the Leander-class (Nilgiri) and Godavari-class frigates, each vessel a testament to growing self-reliance. The shift to international participation came in 2001, when India hosted its inaugural IFR in Mumbai under the theme "Bridges of Friendship". Despite the recent Gujarat earthquake, President K.R. Narayanan reviewed 97 ships, 73 Indian and 24 foreign, from 20 nations. It projected India as an emerging partner on the global stage. Fifteen years later, in 2016, the focus moved east to Visakhapatnam. India's International Fleet Review: A tradition of maritime diplomacy set for historic 2026 edition

The Indian Navy has begun work on a new base at Haldia, in West Bengal, to strengthen India's maritime presence in the northern Bay of Bengal region amid increasing Chinese naval presence and evolving regional security situations pertaining to Bangladesh and Pakistan. According to media reports, the new base, which is unnamed yet, will work as a naval "detachment" for small warships like Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC) and New Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (NWJFAC). The Navy will upgrade the existing Haldia dock complex to rapidly operationalise with minimal additional infrastructure. Initial work will include building a dedicated jetty and shore-support facilities. Currently, the Indian Navy have bases along the eastern coast of India, chiefly in Vishakhapatnam, where the Eastern Naval Command have its headquarters, and also in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. However, the Haldia bases assume significant importance for several reasons, including rising movements by the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in the Indian Ocean Region, growing threats of maritime infiltrations, and rising incidents of illegal crossings from Bangladesh into India using sea routes. Also Read: Under blackout, Iran's streets run red: Tehran doctor says at least 217 killed as regime opens fire on protestors - Report The base also becomes a key asset amid China's growing defence and infrastructure engagement with Bangladesh, along with its long-standing military cooperation with Pakistan. The base will house around a hundred officers and personnel, possibly fewer. Its location at Haldia, about 100 km from Kolkata on the Bay of Bengal, is advantageous as it avoids the long and time-consuming journey up the Hooghly River. In 2024, the Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved the Navy’s proposal to procure 120 Fast Interceptor Craft (FICs) and 31 Next-Generation Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (NWJFACs). The FICs, for example, are small, agile boats of around 100 tonnes, capable of speeds up to 45 knots. Armed with machine guns, they can carry 10–12 personnel and are designed for a wide range of operational roles.

The Indian Navy's activities in 2025 showcased a blend of high-profile power projection and quieter, essential duties that underpin regional stability and India's growing maritime role. While Operation Sindoor and carrier-led deployments captured global attention, the Navy's broader contributions included combating maritime crime, delivering humanitarian aid, strengthening international partnerships through exercises, and advancing self-reliance in shipbuilding. One notable operation came on 31 March 2025, when the frigate INS Tarkash, assisted by a P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, intercepted a suspicious dhow in the Western Indian Ocean. The boarding team seized approximately 2,500 kg of narcotics, including hashish and heroin, highlighting the Navy's ongoing commitment to disrupting illicit trafficking and securing vital sea lanes.Constabulary tasks formed a steady rhythm throughout the year. Under Operation Sankalp, the Navy escorted merchant vessels, conducted anti-piracy patrols, and performed boardings and rescues. These efforts, though less glamorous than carrier strikes, are crucial for protecting India's trade routes, which carry the majority of the country's energy imports and exports.Humanitarian missions also stood out. Following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025 near Mandalay, causing widespread destruction and significant loss of life, the Navy swiftly launched Operation Brahma. Ships including INS Satpura, INS Savitri, INS Karmuk, LCU-52, and INS Gharial delivered hundreds of tonnes of relief material, medical supplies, and emergency stores to affected areas. Coordinated with Indian Air Force airlifts and Army medical teams, the operation reinforced India's reputation as a rapid regional first responder. The Navy's search-and-rescue capabilities were repeatedly tested, with helicopters and vessels conducting medical evacuations and firefighting aboard distressed merchant ships in locations ranging from the Gulf of Aden to waters off Kerala.Beyond operations, the year emphasised international collaboration. TROPEX-25, a major theatre-level exercise, honed warfighting skills across the Indian Ocean. Multilateral and bilateral drills followed, including KONKAN-25, where INS Vikrant operated alongside the UK's HMS Prince of Wales carrier group, with Norway and Japan, and Samudra Shakti with Indonesia, focusing on anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance. Other highlights included the Quad's Malabar exercise off Guam, the French-led La Pérouse involving nine navies, Varuna with France, and the inaugural India-Africa multilateral AIKEYME. These engagements built interoperability and positioned India as a reliable partner in the Indo-Pacific.A key achievement was the push towards indigenisation under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. While INS Tamal marked the final foreign-built warship commissioned from Russia, 2025 saw a surge in domestically produced vessels. Notable inductions included the destroyer INS Surat (Visakhapatnam-class), the first three Nilgiri-class stealth frigates (INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, INS Udaygiri), the last Kalvari-class submarine INS Vagsheer, shallow-water anti-submarine craft such as INS Arnala, INS Androth, and INS Mahe, the diving support vessel INS Nistar, and survey ships INS Nirdeshak and INS Ikshak. These additions not only enhance combat capabilities but also bolster India's defence industry, creating jobs and fostering technological innovation with civilian applications. The Navy's multifaceted role, from deterring threats and saving lives to forging alliances and building capacity, directly supports India's economic security and regional influence. Looking ahead, events like the International Fleet Review and MILAN-26 in Visakhapatnam in February 2026 will showcase these strengths on a global stage, aligning with the MAHASAGAR vision of India as a collaborative maritime leader.2025 was defined by both visible assertion and persistent endeavour, and the Indian Navy proved that modern naval power is as much about sustained presence and partnership as it is about headline operations.

Indian Navy boasts its state-of-the-art aircraft carriers, submarines, warships, but its newest addition, a 5th-century vessel, takes pride in not employing any modern technology as Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Kaundinya, the Navy’s indigenously built traditional stitched sailing vessel, on Monday (Dec 29) embarked on its maiden voyage from Porbandar, Gujarat, to Muscat in Oman. The ship set sail for the Indian Ocean with the Naval band playing “Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire. In every era, the character of warfare changes before the battlefield notices. In South Asia today, that change is unfolding not in the waters of the Arabian Sea, but in the digital ecosystem surrounding it. Pakistan’s recent deployment of AI-generated deepfakes, doctored missile footage, and synthetic naval “victories” marks the arrival of a new and deeply destabilising form of conflict — one in which the mind is targeted before the missile, and perception is shaped long before capability is tested. The most alarming illustration of this shift came not from any ship or submarine, but from a viral video that attempted to impersonate the Chief of the Indian Navy.
When Admirals become targets
The video in question appeared to show India’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, criticising the government for restricting naval action and admitting to fabricated operational losses. For those unfamiliar with modern deepfake technology, the clip looked credible at first glance. But a detailed examination by India’s Deepfakes Analysis Unit revealed that while the opening seconds contained real footage, the remainder of the audio was entirely synthetic — an AI-generated clone grafted onto legitimate visuals. This was not mischief. It was a deliberate attempt to simulate a breach in naval cohesion and erode public trust in one of India’s most disciplined institutions. Around the same time, Pakistan-linked digital networks circulated a second manipulated video, this time targeting the Director General Naval Operations (DGNO) — one of the most crucial operational authorities in the Indian Navy. The fake clip suggested internal disagreement over deployment plans during the Pahalgam–Sindoor crisis. It too was later found to be digitally altered. When a nation directs deepfakes at another’s admirals, it is not engaging in trolling. It is engaging in cognitive warfare.
From ships to screens: Pakistan’s ‘AI navy’ emerges
These deepfakes are not isolated incidents. They are part of a systematic trend. Following Pakistan’s latest test of the P-282 ship-launched anti-ship ballistic missile, the official statement was deliberately vague: no ship name, no telemetry, no seeker details, no confirmation of range or speed. The video showed a missile rising into the sky and a distant splash. That was all. Yet immediately after this minimalist announcement, an entire ecosystem of Pakistan-friendly pages — many of which routinely amplify ISPR narratives — began circulating enhanced, exaggerated, and in many cases doctored ASBM videos. These clips claimed Pakistan had demonstrated an “800 km hypersonic strike,” “carrier-kill capability,” and “South Asia’s first ship-fired hypersonic missile.” None of these details came from Pakistan’s military. They came from Pakistan’s informal information warfare proxies, giving the establishment plausible deniability while reaping the benefit of inflated narratives. This is the architecture of Pakistan’s AI Navy: a virtual force built through synthetic media, operating on social networks, designed to compensate for constraints at sea.
Operation Sindoor shows the real balance of power
During the Pahalgam standoff, India launched Operation Sindoor, deploying nearly three dozen ships, including an aircraft carrier group, across the Arabian Sea. Indian destroyers, frigates, submarines and P-8I aircraft demonstrated maritime dominance and operational readiness. Pakistan Navy, by contrast, remained largely confined to Karachi and nearby waters. Public reporting documented propulsion issues and limited availability of several major vessels. Pakistan issued multiple NAVAREA warnings rather than undertaking forward deployments. Yet online, the picture was the opposite. Digitally altered videos circulated showing Indian ships allegedly destroyed, Pakistani missiles hitting moving targets, and simulated engagements designed to portray dramatic Pakistani victories. In the comments sections, Pakistan’s “virtual navy” appeared to overpower India’s real one. This divergence between operational reality and online fiction shows why cognitive warfare is becoming central to Pakistan’s maritime strategy.
Synthetic capability as a substitute for real capability
Pakistan’s real ASBM capability—to the extent publicly known—aligns with a short-range, China-linked coastal missile comparable to the CM-401 system. Its reach is estimated around 290–350 km. This places it in the realm of littoral anti-access capability, not long-range anti-carrier warfare. Yet the absence of official details allowed Pakistan’s digital ecosystem to stretch this modest capability into a grand narrative of technological breakthrough. This dual-track approach—official vagueness coupled with unofficial hype—allows Islamabad to shape perceptions without being accountable for exaggerations. It also places the burden of countering misinformation on the target nation, in this case India. But India did not play that game. The Indian Navy did not respond with theatrics, press conferences, or counterclaims. It responded with posture. It kept sailing. And in any maritime contest, presence is power.
Why this matters for regional stability
Deepfakes targeting naval leadership, combined with realistic-looking doctored strike videos, introduce risks that go far beyond propaganda. Navies rely on decision cycles, command authority, and crisis clarity. When false statements circulate in the name of senior commanders, or when synthetic footage simulates “victories” that never occurred, misinformation can distort escalation dynamics. A fabricated clip of a ship strike could inflame public opinion in Pakistan.A deepfake of an Indian admiral could generate doubt during a crisis.A doctored ASBM launch could embolden decision-makers already operating under pressure. This is why countries across the world—from the EU to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command—are treating AI manipulation as a strategic threat. South Asia cannot afford to ignore it.
India’s Task: Defend the seas—and the truth
India’s naval superiority remains unquestioned. The Indian Navy has stronger platforms, deeper surveillance reach, and greater operational confidence than Pakistan’s fleet. What now requires equal attention is information superiority—the ability to detect, expose, and neutralise synthetic manipulation before it shapes public or strategic perception. In future crises, the opening salvo may not be a missile launch. It may be a deepfake. And in that moment, the ability to defend narrative integrity will matter as much as the ability to defend the coastline.
Last word
Pakistan’s turn toward deepfakes and doctored naval videos marks the emergence of a second navy — one that exists not in the Arabian Sea, but in the digital domain. It is this “AI Navy,” not the real one, that Islamabad uses to project strength, mask vulnerabilities and influence public opinion. India must recognise this shift and adapt accordingly. The battles of tomorrow will be fought not only with ships, submarines and aircraft, but with algorithms engineered to deceive. In this new era, the Indian Navy must prepare to command both the seas and the truth. (Commodore (Dr.) Johnson Odakkal is a maritime scholar, strategic affairs analyst, and Indian Navy veteran.)

Why this matters for regional stability Deepfakes targeting naval leadership, combined with realistic-looking doctored strike videos, introduce risks that go far beyond propaganda. Navies rely on decision cycles, command authority, and crisis clarity. When false statements circulate in the name of senior commanders, or when synthetic footage simulates “victories” that never occurred, misinformation can distort escalation dynamics. A fabricated clip of a ship strike could inflame public opinion in Pakistan. A deepfake of an Indian admiral could generate doubt during a crisis. A doctored ASBM launch could embolden decision-makers already operating under pressure. This is why countries across the world—from the EU to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command—are treating AI manipulation as a strategic threat. South Asia cannot afford to ignore it. India’s Task: Defend the seas—and the truth India’s naval superiority remains unquestioned. Last word Pakistan’s turn toward deepfakes and doctored naval videos marks the emergence of a second navy — one that exists not in the Arabian Sea, but in the digital domain.

Harish highlighted the Navy’s “decisive action” in the March 2024 liberation of the hijacked bulk carrier MV Ruen from Somali pirates, the first successful anti-piracy boarding operation in years, and its rapid response after the tanker Marlin Luanda, crewed partly by Indians, was struck by a Houthi missile in the Gulf of Aden. The Indian Navy’s role in that rescue earned an IMO Commendation, while the seafarers received the IMO Bravery Award.Beyond kinetic operations, the ambassador pressed for global recognition of India’s maritime coordination hub. “The next logical step is to include the IFC-IOR as the IOR’s primary reporting centre in the IMO Maritime Safety Committee resolution,” he said, referring to the Gurgaon-based Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region, already listed in IMO best practices. While noting India’s contributions as a leading seafaring nation, “India, being in the top three maritime communities, with 12% of the world’s seafarers”, Harish kept the focus also on labour protections. GSAT-7R or CMS-03, India's largest military communications satellite, will enable secure and real-time data, video, and voice connectivity between Indian Navy ships, submarines, aircraft, and Maritime Operations Centres, the Navy said. This indigenously built satellite is to be launched by India's largest rocket LVM3 from ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, at 5:26 pm Sunday (2nd Nov). The 4,400 kg GSAT-7R is India's heaviest military communication satellite and the heaviest satellite that will be launched from home soil. According to the Indian Navy, the satellite carries components that were specifically developed to meet its operational requirements. The satellite is meant to provide telecommunications coverage across the Indian Ocean region and enhance the Navy's space-based communications and maritime domain awareness capabilities. After liftoff at 5:26 pm on Sunday, the three-stage rocket is expected to complete the mission in about 16 minutes. The satellite will be hurled into a lower initial orbit and then gradually raised into the destined orbit over the next few weeks.Eventually, all heavy communication satellites are placed in geostationary orbit, which is about 36,000 km above the Earth's equator. From there, the satellite will be able to provide coverage for about one-third of the Earth. In this case, the CMS-03 will be placed above India, so that it can provide coverage in the vast maritime region surrounding India. The CMS-03/GSAT-7R is a replacement for the ageing GSAT-7 that ISRO built for the Indian Navy in 2013.
