A short circuit is being cited as the likely cause of the fire in one of the dressing rooms. The stadium is under renovation for the ODI World Cup. It is also reported that there was no big damage but the administration has taken a serious note of the incident. The fire-fighting department was immediately called to the incident site to avoid further damage. A few belongings lying in the dressing room were ruined and no one was in direct contact with the fire.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is yet to break silence on the incident but is determined to get the venue ready by September 15. The CAB is thought to be in contact with the officials regarding the cause of the fire and will take all the necessary steps to avoid any further damage. The venue has been certified by ICC and the body is&nbsp;satisfied with the stadium preparations. The ICC committee was in India last week and inspected all the venues for the main event and warm-up matches of the World Cup.

On Wednesday (August 09), India face another challenge as they host arch-rivals Pakistan for the first time in the tournament, which is expected to be another thrilling contest.&nbsp;

Ahead of the marquee Indo-Pak clash, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo caught up with India head coach Craig Fulton in an exclusive interaction. Prior to the much-awaited face-off in Chennai, Fulton stated that he is excited about the big-ticket clash but played down the hype saying Harmanpreet &amp; Co. need to 'back their own structure and training' and look to keep improving.

<h2>'We need to play the game and not the occasion'</h2>

On India's overall run so far, Fulton said, "Been a great experience so far and the home fans have been fantastic." Sharing his take on the Indo-Pak rivalry, he opined, "I have watched a few of these games before (Indo-Pak clashes). Been prepared for a long time for this clash ever since I took this job. Very excited about this, especially at this stage of the tournament. It is an important game. We need to play the game and not the occasion. It brings its own pressure but you got to back your own structure and training and look to improve in areas where we need to."

The 48-year-old Fulton opened up on the Pakistan line-up and said, "Yeah, they are in a nice rebuilding stage. As every national team does, they are in a rebuilding stage and a team to watch out for."

It is to be noted that the Men in Green are in a spot of bother in the continental tournament. They need to win to guarantee a spot in the last four. A defeat would leave their fate on the result of the China-Japan tie. If they lose to India, Pakistan will hope for China's win. Incase Japan outplays China, the victory of the margin should be lesser. In addition, Pakistan will hope for Malaysia to go past&nbsp;South Korea by a handsome margin to benefit their chances.

Talking about India's run and the fitness standards, the South African said, "In four games, we have scored 16 goals. Putting back-to-back performances has been tough. We have done well versus China and Malaysia. We are still in a good place and am very happy with where we are. I am happy with the fitness level. We have played nine games in 12 days and we still have three more games to go. It is a challenge but we are up for it. We need most recovery towards the end of the tournament."

India is riding high on confidence in the Asian Champions Trophy 2023. Captain Harmanpreet recently entered an elite list of players with 150 international goals and has already scored on five instances. Besides, the Pakistan-Sri Lanka match that was supposed to get underway on October 12 in Hyderabad will now take place at the same venue on October 10, giving Pakistan team more to prepare for the high-octane clash against India.

Apart from the opening match in Multan - a new addition in the draft schedule as opposed to the previous versions, Bangladesh vs Afghanistan on September 3, Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan on September 5 and a Super Fours match between A1 and B2 is scheduled to be played in Lahore, Pakistan. It has also been mentioned in the schedule that regardless of where the teams finish in the group stage, Pakistan will remain A1 and India will be A2. As for the Group B, Sri Lanka will be B1 and Bangladesh B2. In the unlikely scenario of Nepal or Afghanistan making it to the Super Fours, they'll replace the knocked-out team in their respective groups. Yes, India defeated Pakistan at the T20 World Cup in Australia but that was purely because of Virat Kohli. He won it single-handedly. Clearly the best-ever T20 innings."

Nonetheless, none of PCB's reported requests were accepted as ICC and BCCI released the schedule earlier this week. Pakistan will open their campaign versus Qualifier 1 in Hyderabad on October 06 and meet arch-rivals India on October 15.&nbsp;

CWC'23: 'They have signed...' - ICC on Pakistan's participation in mega event in India

The stage is set for the biggest clash of the winter between India and Pakistan during the ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup on October 15 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Following the schedule announcement on Tuesday, fans from across the world got busy booking flights and hotels for the CWC 2023; however, the latest reports emerged state there is a surge in hotel prices for D-day, Sunday, October 15, in Ahmedabad, with a ten-fold increase in prices in comparison to July in most hotels.

While in some luxury hotels in Ahmedabad, where the usual tariff for one night is somewhere between INR 5000-8000, on October 15, the prices shot up from INR 40,000 to INR 1 Lac. For instance, the Pride Plaza hotel, which costs around INR 4000 for a room per night in July, is charging a whopping INR 75,000 for that one night.&nbsp;

As per a report in PTI, the Welcome Hotel by ITC Hotels – whose one-night fare is around INR 5699, will charge 72,000 for the same room on October 15.

Meanwhile, because of this there has been non-availability of rooms at all five-star hotels in the city, including the ITC Narmada, the Courtyard by Marriott, the Hyatt and the Taj Skyline Ahmedabad.

“Since their first choice would be luxury hotels and they plan in advance, they might have started booking rooms in city hotels, which might have resulted in no occupancy in some of the hotels," Deshmukh added.

He also added the surge in demand for the luxury hotels is mainly due to NRIs and upper middle-class people living in nearby cities or states who would be travelling for the match. Deshmukh noted budget hotels in the city are yet to see this rise in fares because the middle-class people, who would be deciding to stay there at the last moment.

Meanwhile, the home World Cup begins with the opener between England and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium on October 5, while India will play its first match against the mighty Aussies in Chennai.

<h2>Unprecedented delay in announcing schedule</h2>

Notably, never in the history of the marquee tournament has there been such delay in announcing the schedule. The same for the last two editions was announced one year in advance. BCCI secretary Jay Shah, on May 27, had said that the schedule would be announced during the World Test Championship (WTC) Final. ICC CEO Geoff Allardice too, on the first day of WTC Final, had said that the schedule would be announced 'anytime soon,' while speaking on BBC's Test Match Special. Nonetheless, the schedule seems all but certainty now with draft being out.&nbsp;

Apart from their clash against India, Pakistan will face two qualifier teams on October 6 and 12 in Hyderabad before facing Australia in Bengaluru on October 20. Pakistan, who had earlier threatened to boycott over Asia Cup hosting, will then be facing Afghanistan and South Africa in Chennai on October 23 and 27, respectively. The final three matches of Asia Cup hosts are set to be played in Kolkata on October 31, Bengaluru on November 5 and Kolkata again on November 12 against Bangladesh, New Zealand and England, respectively.

“Everyone talks about Sachin Tendulkar, but Inzamam-Ul-Haq is Asia’s biggest middle-order batsman,” Sehwag told Gaurav Kapoor on Breakfast with Champions. 
“See, Tendulkar was above the league of batsmen. So he doesn’t count. But when it comes to the most superior-middle order batsman across India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, I have never seen anyone better than him (Inzamam),” Sehwag added.

Elaborating on what made him call Inzamam the best, Sehwag said unlike other batters or captains during the early 2000s, Inzamam was not afraid of chasing down huge totals – even if the run rate is above eight.

A World Cup winner with Pakistan, Inzamam had scored over 10,000 runs in ODIs and was instrumental in leading Pakistan to heights during that era. Speaking on the same lines, Sehwag said,

“In that era – 2003-04 – he used to talk about scoring eight an over. He would say, ‘Don’t worry. We’ll score easily. 80 required in 10 overs, any other players would panic, but he was always confident,” Viru said.

“It was in 2005. Kaneria (Danish) was bowling round the wickets right at my pads. They were trying to stop me from scoring. I played an over or two defensively. I said to him, ‘Inzy bhai, it’s been a while. Now my legs are also hurting… How long should i stretch and take it on my pads?

“I told him to call the long-on fielder inside the circle. He asked me what I’d do then. I said that I’d hit a six. He said ‘your are joking.’ I said, ‘sent the fielder back if I don’t hit a six,” Sehwag said.

“He agreed and called the fielder closer. Kaneria bowled a googly. He didn’t know about this and I hit the googly for a six over long-on. Kaneria got angry. He said, ‘Inzi bhai, why did you bring the fielder up?’ Inzamam told him; ‘Be quiet, you don’t know what’s going on here…Go back and bowl. Otherwise, I’ll send you out from the ground."

Sethi, who is handed an extension to his interim tenure earlier, suggested that they could allow India to play at a neutral venue in the Asia Cup while the same should be implemented for the ODI World Cup later in the year.

"We have been advised to play the Asia Cup at a neutral venue and also go to India for the World Cup,” Sethi said while not hinting at where the proposal came from.

"We feel this hybrid experiment can also be applied when it is time for the World Cup," Sethi said.

"Our stance is that everything should be on a reciprocal basis. In the old times, yes, there were security issues in Pakistan. But now there are no issues, so what is India's excuse for not playing in Pakistan?"

India has strongly hinted that they will not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup later in the year and have asked for a neutral venue to stage their matches. The diplomatic relations between the nations have been in hot water in recent years, with India’s last visit to Pakistan coming in June 2008 in the Asia Cup.

Sethi, whose tenure was set to expire as the interim boss on Saturday, will be given an extension of two to four weeks. While could succeed as the new permanent head, he still feels India could come to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

"We have been told that, maybe, the ice will keep on melting - if this happens when the Champions Trophy is held in Pakistan in 2025, India would consider playing in Pakistan," Sethi said at a press interaction.

"Our government has imposed no restrictions about playing against India," Sethi said.

"But I can say right now that the public mood is: we are not needy and we can stand on our own feet financially and we want to play cricket with India honourably. We are also negotiating with the ACC."

The Asia Cup 2023 will get underway in Pakistan in September with six teams participating in the continental event. While the format will remain the same for groups, the fixtures will be played in 50 overs. Both India and Pakistan will be grouped together and could meet three times while Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and one team will be identified after the qualifiers, which are currently underway in Nepal.
