When it comes to ICC events, an India vs Pakistan match is usually the biggest attraction, as the rivalry draws huge global interest, especially because the two sides have not played a bilateral series since 2012 due to political tensions. With the ICC announcing new formats for the 2027 ODI World Cup and the 2028 T20 World Cup on Wednesday, there is now a possibility that cricket’s biggest rivalry could take place more than once in the same tournament.
ODI World Cup 2027
Under the new format, 12 teams from the 14 participating nations will move into the Super Seven stage. Before that, the teams finishing 12th, 13th and 14th will play a new “Super Series” round, with one team qualifying for the main competition. The top four teams from the Super Seven stage will then advance to the semi-finals. If India and Pakistan are placed in the same group in the opening stage, as has often happened in ICC tournaments, both teams would still be expected to reach the Super Seven stage unless there is a major upset. Since the Super Seven is a round-robin league, they would meet again, meaning the rivals could play each other at least twice during the tournament. Also Read - ICC ODI all-rounders rankings: Axar Patel storms into top 10 after England heroics If both teams also qualify for the semi-finals or even the final, another meeting could be possible depending on the draw and results.
T20 World Cup 2028
The 2028 T20 World Cup will still feature 20 teams, but they will now be divided into five groups of four. If India and Pakistan are drawn in the same group, they would meet in the opening stage. The top two teams from each group will then qualify for the Super 10 stage. The 10 qualified teams will be split into two groups of five. India beat Pakistan 4-3 in a thrilling FIH Pro League match in London. Abhishek, Nilakanta Sharma, Sukhjeet Singh and Rajinder Singh scored as India secured a dramatic victory over their archrivals

The Indian Men's Hockey Team kicked off the London leg of their FIH Pro League European tour with a thrilling 4-3 victory over archrivals Pakistan at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Tuesday (June 23). After a cautious opening quarter, India found their rhythm and produced a clinical attacking display to secure their third outright win of the Pro League season. Despite a late fightback from Pakistan, India held firm to claim all three points and move up to seventh place in the standings. Goals from Abhishek (22'), Nilakanta Sharma (24'), Sukhjeet Singh (40') and Rajinder Singh (52') proved decisive in a pulsating contest. Pakistan struck first in the eighth minute when Ahmad Nadeem converted a well-worked penalty-corner routine to hand his side an early 1-0 lead. India responded positively, creating several opportunities but struggling to find the finishing touch. The closest India came to equalising in the opening quarter arrived in its final minute when they earned three consecutive penalty corners. However, Pakistan goalkeeper Ali Raza denied captain Harmanpreet Singh's drag flick with an impressive save. India stepped up the intensity in the second quarter and finally found the breakthrough in the 22nd minute. Dilpreet Singh's powerful effort was blocked by Raza, but Abhishek reacted quickest to slot home the rebound and level the scores at 1-1. The momentum remained with India, and just two minutes later they completed the turnaround. After earning another penalty corner, Nilakanta Sharma pounced on a loose ball and fired it through the goalkeeper's legs to make it 2-1. Every time a chatbot gives a polished answer or a humanoid robot demo goes viral, there's an invisible workforce behind it - and increasingly, a large part of that workforce is in India. For wages that can work out to just a couple of dollars an hour, Indian workers are doing the repetitive, unglamorous labour of labelling data, correcting AI outputs, and even acting out tasks on camera so robots can learn to mimic them. A Booming But Invisible Industry India's data annotation industry has grown explosively - from roughly $250 million in 2020-21 to a market expected to cross $7 billion by 2030. That growth is being driven almost entirely by demand from US AI labs, which need vast amounts of human-labelled data to train and fine-tune their models. The work itself is mundane: tagging images, transcribing audio, rating chatbot responses, and flagging errors - millions of small tasks that, stitched together, make large AI models usable. The Wage Gap Is Stark While American annotators working on similar tasks for the same companies have reportedly earned between $15 and $25 an hour, workers in India, Kenya, the Philippines and Venezuela doing comparable work have been paid as little as $1 to $3 an hour - a figure that, converted, lands in the range of roughly Rs 100 to Rs 250 an hour. Major US AI labs rarely hire these workers directly; instead, they go through specialist contracting platforms, which in turn route the work to whichever country offers the cheapest labour at any given time. If workers in one country push back on pay, the platforms simply shift the work elsewhere - keeping wages low and workers replaceable. Training The Robots That Could Replace Them Perhaps the most striking part of this story is the newest frontier: humanoid robots. Companies have begun hiring Indian workers - often in factory settings - to wear lightweight cameras and perform everyday tasks, generating ‘egocentric’ video data that is then used to teach robots how to do that same work. One such operation, Egolab.AI - whose India arm is based in Bengaluru - partners with factories across the country, including garment manufacturers, to collect this kind of footage from workers for robotics projects worldwide. In effect, some workers are now being paid small sums to record themselves doing the jobs that the resulting AI and robotics systems may eventually be used to automate. No Safety Net, Constant Surveillance Most of these workers are classified as independent contractors rather than employees, which means they fall outside standard protections like minimum wage enforcement, paid leave, or severance. India's existing labour laws, including the Code on Wages, were not designed for piece-rate, task-by-task digital work and struggle to regulate it. On top of low pay, workers describe intense surveillance - every click, keystroke and submission tracked - and a constant fear of being silently removed from a platform for a single mistake, with no manager or appeals process to turn to. The Bigger Picture AI companies in Silicon Valley are valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars, built in large part on the unglamorous, low-paid work happening in places like India. As India positions itself as a hub for the global AI economy - with government summits, mega data centre deals and ambitious adoption targets - this other side of the story rarely gets the same spotlight: a growing number of Indians whose daily work is to make foreign AI systems smarter, faster and more capable, often for a fraction of what the same work pays elsewhere in the world.

Indian workers are paid as little as Rs 100-250 an hour to label data and train AI and robots for US tech giants - often the same systems that could replace their jobs.

Behind every chatbot and humanoid robot demo is an invisible workforce and a huge share of it is in India. Indian workers are labelling data and training AI systems for American tech giants, often the very systems that could one day take their jobs.

'For Rs 250 per hour': How Indians are selling their future to American AI companies

Scroll through the news and India looks like an AI superpower in the making - enterprise adoption rates among the highest in the world, government AI summits, and billion-dollar data centre deals. But step outside the boardrooms and city offices, and for a huge share of people across the Indian subcontinent, AI is still something that exists mainly on a screen, in a Hollywood movie, a viral video, or a headline about ChatGPT, not something they have ever opened or used themselves. The Numbers Behind The Gap The disconnect shows up clearly in the data. Fewer than one in five rural residents across the Asia-Pacific region can perform even a basic digital task like a spreadsheet calculation, compared to roughly one in four in urban areas and AI naturally requires a layer of digital comfort above that. Around a quarter of the Asia-Pacific population remains offline entirely, with no realistic path to encountering AI tools in daily life. Smartphones, But Not Equal Access On paper, smartphone penetration looks promising, over 85% of Indian households now own at least one smartphone. But ownership doesn't mean equal access. Within those households, usage is often skewed heavily towards one or two members, typically men. Across South Asia, women remain up to 40% less likely than men to own a smartphone or have independent internet access - which means the household ‘having a smartphone’ often translates to almost no hands-on AI exposure for large numbers of women and older family members. The Language Wall Perhaps the biggest barrier isn't the device, it's the language on the screen. Most AI tools, from chatbots to voice assistants, are built first for English or a handful of major national languages. For the hundreds of millions across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka who are most comfortable in regional languages and dialects, that's an immediate wall. Education data reflects this too: in surveys of rural schools, none offered any AI-related curriculum, compared to over 40% of urban schools, meaning an entire generation in rural areas is growing up without even classroom exposure to how these tools work. Two Different Countries, One AI Story AI is an abstract concept for majority of people, something that exists in the same mental category as flying cars or robots that talk, impressive, a little unsettling, but fundamentally not part of daily life. Interestingly, surveys show young people in India and other emerging economies are actually more optimistic about AI than their counterparts in wealthier nations but that optimism is often based on what they've seen depicted online or in films, rather than direct experience. Why Closing This Gap Matters The risk is that AI becomes another technology that arrives in the subcontinent only for those who are already digitally privileged, urban, English-speaking, smartphone-owning, and male - while everyone else watches from the outside, the same way many experienced the early years of the internet and smartphones. Bridging that gap will require AI tools that work natively in regional languages, are designed for low-bandwidth and shared-device environments, and are introduced through schools and community programmes - not just enterprise dashboards. Until then, for a large share of people across the Indian subcontinent, AI will keep feeling exactly like what it currently is to them: something that only really exists in the movies.

India leads in enterprise AI adoption, but for hundreds of millions across the subcontinent, AI remains something seen only in movies. Here's why the gap exists.

Can fans ever see India and Pakistan playing bilateral cricket again? Perhaps not! IPL founder Lalit Modi has provided a reality check behind the lack of bilateral cricket between the arch-rivals and why it might remain a distant dream for everyone, at least in the near future. India and Pakistan share tense geopolitical relations, and with recent history fuelling it, the two cannot think of getting together on a cricket field outside of the ICC events.
So, where does the problem lie?
Modi pointed out the root cause behind the lack of bilateral cricket between the two powerhouses. Speaking on ‘The Overlap Podcast’ with Michael Vaughan, Modi said that the politicisation of the Pakistan Cricket Board is a significant reason for restricting the resumption of head-to-head cricket between India and Pakistan. Also read | MCA launches BCCI-like contract system in domestic cricket, becomes first board to implement Modi stressed that had the PCB been run independently, without any political influence, there could have been some traction. “The problem is, if the Pakistan Cricket Board were independent and ran independently without political influence, we would have some traction. But today, it is so politicised by the powers that be,” Modi said. Further commenting on how things usually shape up at the political level, Modi admitted to rising tensions at the top, which are unlikely to fade away anytime soon. Lalit Modi has ruled out the resumption of India-Pakistan bilateral cricket, blaming the "politicisation" of the PCB. In a candid interview with Michael Vaughan, Modi reflects on his role in the 2006 Friendship Series and why current tensions make a neutral venue series "impossible" for now.

But today, it is so politicised by the powers that be,” Modi said. Further commenting on how things usually shape up at the political level, Modi admitted to rising tensions at the top, which are unlikely to fade away anytime soon. The IPL founder concluded by saying that we cannot expect cricket to take precedence. “There is tension at the political level, and that is not going away. It’s only going to get worse, so I fear for the players,” he said, before concluding, “I don’t think it will be possible in the near future. In the latest development surrounding India-Pakistan's ongoing conflict regarding venues and decisions around it, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is mulling shifting significant ICC tournaments out of India due to increasing yet unpleasant chaos involving the two countries and their cricket boards, which also puts the ICC in a spot ahead of its marquee match in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. Even though the scheduled match went ahead as planned, it took a lot of convincing from the ICC, something they wish to avoid doing in future. T20 World Cup 2026: What happens if India vs Pakistan washes out

The spotlight of the cricketing fraternity will be on Colombo as India and Pakistan will take the field for the ninth time in the T20 World Cup on Saturday (Feb 15). Maintaining a hot record in the fixture, India will walk into the Group A contest as the favourites, while Pakistan will look to record just their second senior men’s World Cup win over India. However, there could be an uninvited member on Sunday as rain could play spoilsport. Ahead of the high-octane clash at the R. However, quick fire round of meetings in Lahore saw the International Cricket Council (ICC) make a breakthrough and get the fixture back on track. India will walk out as the favourites to win the match, having won seven out of the eight matches in the past, while Pakistan’s solitary win came in the 2021 T20 World Cup. India are likely to field Abhishek Sharma back into the Playing XI after he was passed fit and traveled to Colombo with the rest of the squad. While captain Suryakumar Yadav did not confirm his availability, he is likely to get back into the Playing XI, replacing Sanju Samson. Samson will be the obvious choice to be dropped from the Playing XI, having been on a poor run of form.
