<p>The story of how India fans borrowed&nbsp;Bella&nbsp;the&nbsp;elephant&nbsp;from Chessington Zoo and brought her to the Oval mid-match -- something the 1971 team saw as a lucky omen as it coincided with the festival of Ganesha, the&nbsp;Hindu god &nbsp;-- has gone down in cricket history.</p>

<p>But an animal of a different kind may have had a bigger influence on the game, according to India leg-spinner Bhagwat Chandrasekhar.</p>

<p>With a bowling arm withered by childhood polio, Chandra was a unique proposition and his superb 6-38 in the second innings left India with a target of 173, which they chased down with four wickets to spare.</p>

<p>"I was walking back to my run-up and Dilip Sardesai shouted "Hey Chandra, bowl him 'Mill Reef'," said Chandrasekhar in a video message to an audience at London's Taj St James Court Hotel celebrating the 'Golden Jubilee' on Wednesday.</p>

<p>"There was a horse called Mill Reef in England, which was winning all the big races (including the 1971 Epsom Derby) and it had tremendous speed," added Chandra, whose quicker ball deceived many a batsman in a career that yielded 242 wickets in 58 Tests.</p>

<p>"I had the idea of bowling my googly to John Edrich but then I thought 'Dilip Sardesai is a good student of the game'."</p>

<p><strong>'Freak bowler'&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>Chandrasekhar bowled Edrich, one of the mainstays of England's top order, for a duck.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Before he could lift the bat, the ball hit the stumps," added the 76-year-old, as he joyfully recalled Edrich's exit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Farokh Engineer, India's wicketkeeper in 1971, was in no doubt of Chandrasekhar's quality.</p>

<p>"Chandra, with due respect I think he is the greatest spin bowler India has produced," said Engineer, who also kept superbly to such outstanding spinners as Erapalli Prasanna, Bishan Bedi and Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan.</p>

<p>"But half the time, he didn't know which way the ball was going," added Engineer speaking in London with Indian cricket journalist Ashis Ray.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"He was a freak bowler. He was a polio victim, and hats off to him, he made his defect into a great asset."</p>

<p>Engineer, 28 not out when Abid Ali hit the winning runs, had little time to enjoy the victory as the next day he was playing for English county Lancashire in Manchester.</p>

<p>"The motorways weren't as good in those days, I got home at about four o'clock in the morning (0300 GMT) and at 10:30 am, I am striding out to open the innings with David Lloyd," the now 83-year-old Engineer recalled.</p>

<p>"To my surprise, I got a standing ovation from the predominately English crowd.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I thought 'this is real sportsmanship -- I've just shafted their country the day before and hear they are giving me a standing ovation. I had a tear in my eye."</p>

<p>England's John Jameson who made a fine 82 in the first innings, told the London audience of an event supported by the ICICI Bank, East African Foods and West Midlands India Partnership: "I am the only one here who has got a foot in both camps.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I'm a Bombay (Mumbai)-wallah -- I was born in Byculla," added Jameson, who revealed he had rejected an approach to play for India as "my home was in England".&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Shastri 'inspired'</strong></p>

<p>For India head coach Ravi Shastri, who later became a successful Test match all-rounder, the game was a key moment in his life.</p>

<p>"I was nine years old, listening to it on Test Match Special from the BBC on 9.74 metres wavelength on the 31 metre band," Shastri said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I listened to every ball in that game... and of course Farokh, he is from my school, my college, we go a long way back. &nbsp;</p>

<p>"For a nine-year-old, it inspired me no end. One day when you play cricket you want to win a series in England. It happened for me as a player (1986) and as a coach (in 2007)."&nbsp;</p>

<p>And, with the current five-match series all square at 1-1, it could still happen again.</p>

<p>Former England captain Nasser Hussain has warned Joe Root-led team not to write India off the fourth Test in south London and the final match at Old Trafford as the Indian side has the ability to make a comeback. <p>Cheteshwar Pujara orchestrated India's spirited resistance with an unbeaten career-reviving 91 but England remained on course for a series-levelling victory in the third test at Headingley on Friday.</p>

<p>Under pressure to save his place in the side, Pujara added 82 runs with Rohit Sharma and 99 with Virat Kohli to steer India to 215-2 when bad light stopped third day's play.</p>

<p>India are still 139 runs behind but it was a much-improved performance by the tourists who had wilted for 78 in their first innings to be on the back foot.</p>

<p>Captain Kohli, who has had a subdued series so far, was batting on 45 and would hope to continue the good work when they resume on Saturday.</p>

<p>England have made a few changes going into the game with Dawid Malan coming in to bat at number three and Haseeb Hameed moving up to open alongside Rory Burns.</p>

<p>Root expects Malan to make an instant impact even though the southpaw has not played a lot of red-ball cricket of late.</p>

<p>Mark Wood has been ruled out of this week's third Test with India dealing a blow to the hosts' hopes of levelling the five-match series which the tourists lead 1-0.</p>

<p>The 31-year-old has a jarred right shoulder, a result of diving headlong into an advertising hoarding when saving a boundary on the fourth evening of the second Test at Lord's.</p>

<p>Even though he bowled at speeds in excess of 93 mph (150 kph) on the last day of the second Test, which England lost, he has been judged not fit to take his place in the starting line-up for the game at Headingley, which gets underway on Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"He will remain with the squad in Leeds and will continue his rehab with the England medical team.</p>

<p>"The 31-year-old will be assessed at the end of this Test match."</p>

<p>The Durham paceman, whose career has been blighted by injuries, adds to the growing list of unavailable England seam bowlers.</p>

<p>Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer, Olly Stone and Chris Woakes are out due to injury whilst all-rounder Ben Stokes is unavailable owing to a mental health break.</p>

During the third day at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, the England team was trying to get the final wicket that became a bit frustrating for them as the last-wicket stand between Bumrah and Siraj accumulated some crucial runs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During a discussion with India's fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar on his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed what went wrong and why Anderson was furious.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The thing was, Jimmy was like, 'Hey mate! Why are you bowling so fast? Am I doing the same to you?'. The beauty about that is, looks like Jimmy had told Boom (Bumrah), 'All this while, you were bowling in 80mph; suddenly on seeing me, why are you bowling in 90mph?'," Ashwin said.</p>

As an opposition batsman when you look at him, you have to be very good, or rather outstanding, to find it easy against him. <p>In the 84th over, when Anderson was bowling, he said a few words to Siraj. Soon after that, Siraj said something in return and the video of that heated altercation went viral on social media.</p>

'He adds a different flavour to Indian attack': Ex-Pakistan captain praises Mohammed Siraj

<p>An England side reeling from a 151-run defeat by India, and already missing several fast bowlers, could be without Mark Wood for next week's third Test after the express quick injured himself while fielding at Lord's.</p>

<p>Wood landed heavily on his right shoulder while diving headlong into an advertising hoarding when saving a boundary on the fourth evening, but he still bowled at speeds in excess of 93 mph (150 kph) on Monday's last day of the second Test.</p>

<p>There are doubts, however, over whether the Durham paceman, whose career has been blighted by injuries, will be fit to feature at Headingley, with England due to name their squad on Wednesday.</p>

<p>England are already without several seam bowlers in the injured Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes, while all-rounder Ben Stokes is unavailable due to a mental health break.</p>

<p>"The medics are working on him (Wood), we'll find out more in the next couple of days," England coach Chris Silverwood said Tuesday after a crushing loss that left his side 1-0 down in a five-match series following a rain-marred draw at Trent Bridge.</p>

<p>"We will make a decision, along with him and our medics, closer to the time. But if he's not right, he's not right. I certainly won't push him into playing if he tells me he's not right. I will look after him."</p>

<p>But for all Silverwood lauded Wood's "superb effort", many felt he should have taken greater care in the field.</p>

<p>"It was madness," said former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott in his column for Britain's Daily Telegraph.</p>

<p>"Modern-day cricketers all dive athletically to save runs and the effort is commendable, but it is not worth the risk of injury to a leading bowler," he added.</p>

<p>England, now without a win in their last seven Tests, repeatedly bowled too short at Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah during their unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 89.</p>

<p>The India duo then starred with the ball as England, set a target of 272, were shot out for 120 with 49 balls left in the day.</p>

<p>England's tactics 'crazy'</p>

<p>England's quicks appeared more interested in seeking revenge for the rough treatment number 11 James Anderson received when he batted, rather than dismissing the India tailenders.</p>

<p>"Bouncer after bouncer was crazy," said Boycott. "Emotion got the better of England and common sense went out the window."</p>

<p>England captain Joe Root -- who made a superb 180 not out in the first innings -- blamed himself for his side's tactics, but Silverwood said: "It's a collective and I'm part of that as well.</p>

<p>"We tried to go toe-to-toe with them, but what we could have done better is shift from that tactic back to Plan A, and hitting the top of off."</p>

<p>Silverwood, himself a former England bowler, praised Shami and Bumrah by saying: "I thought they handled the situation really well."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, there was no escaping England's ongoing lack of top-order runs, with a first three of Rory Burns, Dom Sibley&nbsp;and&nbsp;Haseeb Hameed&nbsp;each out for a duck at Lord's.</p>

<p>Only left-handed opener Burns, with a first-innings 49, managed a score of any note.</p>

<p>England may drop Sibley, averaging under 20 in Tests this year, following his duck on Monday.</p>

<p>Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami scored crucial runs for the team with their unbeaten 89-run partnership for the ninth wicket.&nbsp;</p>
