<p>A white shark nudged closer, gliding just above actress Cobie Smulders, like a fan asking for a selfie. Smulders welcomed the intrusion. “This is cool,” she said, rapt, as the shark slid past in the waters of the New York Aquarium.</p>

As a mermaid-obsessed child in British Columbia, she visited the Vancouver aquarium often and spent weekends on her father’s sailboat, wondering about the life below the water’s surface. The University of Victoria accepted her to its marine biology program.</p>

With hair like a Westminster-winning Afghan hound, legs like the Eiffel Tower and a voice as clipped and polished as a high-end manicure, her version of Coulter finds pleasure everywhere she goes, usually because she brings multiple bottles of wine along. The “Impeachment” producers had approached her a few weeks before the 2020 presidential election, the first in which Smulders, a proud Canadian who recently became a U.S. citizen, could vote. Smulders votes a liberal ticket, so sharing head space with Coulter, who has written books such as “Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism,” didn’t seem healthy or fun.</p>

But Killam was already attached to the series as Steve Jones, Paula Jones’ husband. And “Stumptown,” the moody procedural on ABC in which Smulders starred, was canceled because of the pandemic, freeing up her schedule.</p>

So after Donald Trump lost the election, Smulders taped an audition. Playing an ultraconservative — especially an ultraconservative with a miniskirt wardrobe and a Champagne habit — no longer felt so dark to her.</p>

“She’s the only one who can actually have any fun,” Smulders said of her character. “This confidence that this woman has, to be able to walk into a room and think you’re the smartest person in the room, that you’re the most powerful person in the room, that is the polar opposite of me and my life.”</p>

“I have grown up, I am a father now, everything has changed but I am still the same somehow,” Sheeran sings on the opener, “Tides,” in a flagrant display of telling rather than showing. Musically, though, “Tides” is one of the most effective songs on the album, a stomping, surging lite-rocker arranged around a neat formal trick. After verses that rush through a list of Sheeran’s fears and neuroses, the track suddenly seems to suspend itself in midair during the chorus, long enough for Sheeran to reveal to his loved ones, “Time stops to still, when you are in my arms it always will.” (Sheeran recycles the effect later in the album, on “Love in Slow Motion.”)</p>

More than any of his previous LPs, “=” finds Sheeran mining the slick, synthesized sounds of ’80s pop. While he works again with writer and producer Johnny McDaid of Snow Patrol, he adds a new collaborator on more than half the tracks: Fred again.., a British dance-music artist.</p>

But the retro aesthetic is most indebted to an album that is only a year and a half old, the Weeknd’s massively successful “After Hours.” His silhouette has lately cast a long shadow across his fellow male pop stars (Justin Bieber, the Kid Laroi), though it’s most apparent on Sheeran’s current hit, “Bad Habits,” a pulsating, strobe-lit lament in the tradition of a Weeknd song: “It started under neon lights and then it all got dark,” Sheeran sings, recounting another night of empty, bleary-eyed partying.</p>

<p><br />
Where the Weeknd’s music often revels in decadence and nihilism, Sheeran’s depictions of wild nights are often accompanied by a potent dose of morning-after guilt and the eventual possibility of redemption — usually a kind of quasi-religious salvation that can be attained through the love of a good woman. As he puts it on “The Joker and the Queen,” a music-box piano ditty on “=” that stretches a poker metaphor exhaustingly far, “When I fold, you see the best in me.”</p>

<p><br />
“=” is the kindest, gentlest Sheeran album, which is something of a shame. “You don’t normally have that opportunity with the story, to have a break in the middle and think about what you’re doing and approach things differently the second way,” Hogg said in an interview at a downtown hotel the day after her movie’s New York Film Festival premiere last month. (Part II takes place only a few days after Part I but was shot two years later.)</p>

Until recently, her films have been like a much-beloved secret. “Joanna Hogg — where have you been all my movie-loving life?” Manohla Dargis wrote when the director’s first three features were finally released in the United States in 2014. A.O. Scott called the first part “an absolute joy to watch.” Distributed by the brand-savvy A24, “The Souvenir Part II” is the latest entry in Hogg’s ardently admired oeuvre.</p>

Scottish novelist Ali Smith (“Summer”), who once screened Hogg’s work at an arts festival, said via email, “Her films are beautiful things in the world, and witty, hyper-intelligent, scalpel-sharp, simultaneously merciless and deeply humane.” Smith added, “She takes class apart, she has a clear eye across the traditions that skewer us or vitalize us.”</p>

Like Julie, Hogg studied filmmaking in the 1980s, at the National Film and Television School in England, and dated a devastatingly charming man with an all-consuming drug addiction. And Julie’s background, like Hogg’s, is solidly upper middle class. Visits to the country home of Julie’s parents punctuate both films; artifacts, clothing and photos from Hogg’s life appear throughout, too. “Part I” broaches the notion of privilege, as Julie faces teachers skeptical of her initial proposal to make a film about a struggling port city. “Part II” sees her coming out of her shell and, as Hogg put it, “joining the world, joining life.”</p>

Hogg went on to a career in British television and did not direct her first theatrical feature until 2007 at age 47: “Unrelated,” starring Tom Hiddleston, also making his feature debut. “The Souvenir Part II” imagines a different trajectory for Julie, giving her a freedom Hogg did not have at the time.</p>

“I didn’t get to make a film at film school that spoke about the relationship that I’d been in,” the director said. Friendly and low-key in a subdued dark top and pants, she chose her words firmly but with a dry sense of understatement that would fit without a rustle right into a Joanna Hogg film.</p>

“I was getting onto a train to go back to London, and Honor was arriving from London coming home,” Hogg said. The two chatted on the platform about “what it is to be in your early 20s,” and for Hogg it just “clicked.”</p>

“I feel like I was very like Julie when I was a bit younger. You know how insecure it is,” Swinton Byrne, 23, said, bubbly over the phone from Edinburgh, where she’s studying psychology after a teaching stint in Namibia, among other things. Hogg’s two-part idea — which she dates at least to a journal entry in 1988 — wasn’t a sure thing. She had planned to shoot both films at the same time, until a financier pulled out. Another twist involved Robert Pattinson, who was slated for a role (later reworked) in “Part II” but was tied up with “Tenet” instead. (No hard feelings from Hogg: “I hope that I’ll work with him in the future.”)</p>

“I wanted desperately to make them at the same time, because I thought there was a danger that if I just made the first one, I wouldn’t get the opportunity to make the second one,” Hogg recalled.</p>

Today, she is grateful for the extra time and even believes the second part would have been “a shadow of its current self” if she’d shot both movies together.</p>

It’s easy to see this ability to adapt and find an alchemy in the shifts of reality as part of her filmmaking style. Despite her movies’ precise ear for the spoken word, Hogg doesn’t write traditional screenplays, giving actors the space to come up with dialogue. After years of sporadic work, he landed a starring role on BET’s “The Game,” a comedy-drama set in the world of professional football, then was booked as the romantic lead on the HBO comedy “Insecure,” playing Lawrence, the boyfriend of series creator Issa Rae’s Issa.</p>

At the end of the show’s first season, Issa cheats on Lawrence. Lawrence retaliates by dangling the promise of a reunion, then bedding a co-worker. Which means that attitudes toward the character — and Ellis — are pretty divisive. (“Insecure” returns for a fifth and final season Sunday.)</p>

Next, they walked through the African market near West 116th Street and past the Masjid Malcolm Shabazz, where incense clouded the late-summer air and a nearby cafe advertised male enhancements and veggie burgers. Ellis had barely been back in 15 years. The burned-out brownstones had been renovated, he noted. And the police presence seemed lighter.</p>

The tour continued past Minton’s Playhouse and alongside Marcus Garvey Park, the site of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival that was chronicled in the documentary “Summer of Soul,” which Ellis had just seen. He stopped outside the house where Maya Angelou once lived, admiring the ivy that tumbled from the lintel.</p>

Throughout the walk, fans stopped Ellis for greetings and pictures — “Take it with me, not of me,” Ellis said to an excitable middle-aged woman who had halted her car just to snap him. Friends and relatives stopped Shoemaker, too, and Ellis, who lives in Los Angeles with his wife and baby daughter, seemed a little jealous of the humming street life.</p>

“It’s the music mecca for Black culture,” Ellis said. “It’s the style mecca. Religiously, it’s a mecca. I come here, and I’m like, ‘Why am I living in LA?’”</p>

Ellis, the only child of an Air Force family, moved to Los Angeles just after his Harlem years. He briefly gave up on acting, then recommitted. A plucky hustle — he pretended that a casting agent had recommended him — hooked him a decent manager, and after a couple of years of acting classes, he began to book roles.</p>

None has meant as much to him as Lawrence, a character who struggles with the obligations of Black masculinity. Lawrence wasn’t supposed to make it past Season 1, but something about Ellis’ layered portrayal made him a fan favorite. And a least favorite.</p>

“I always say that if people are mad at me, if people are happy with me, if they’re sad or whatever, then I did my job,” he said. “Even if you hate Lawrence, I did my job because you felt something. I hope you love him because I love him. But I get it if you don’t.”</p>

Are Lawrence and Issa endgame? Ellis knew better than to comment. “I want both of them to be happy,” he said diplomatically. “I hope that it’s with each other.”</p>

He has already begun his post-“Insecure” career, with a starring role in “Top Gun: Maverick,” due out next year. (His character’s nickname? Payback.) He recently signed onto a romantic comedy, “Somebody I Used to Know,” and is the co-creator of the podcast “Written Off,” which features the work of formerly incarcerated authors.</p>

Ellis followed Shoemaker past Dapper Dan’s atelier, into the Harlem Haberdashery and cater-corner to Harlem Shake, where Ellis would return for a post-walk burger. On 125th Street, he stopped to read the text on a monument to the politician and civil rights leader Adam Clayton Powell Jr.</p>

The tour ended at the Apollo Theater, “where stars are born, legends are made,” Shoemaker said. Ellis is already a star, but he still fantasizes about appearing in one of its amateur nights. Would he sing? Tell a joke?</p>

<p>"As Warner Bros. Television has stated, they decided not to exercise the option to engage Ruby for season two of ‘Batwoman’ based on multiple complaints about her workplace behaviour. I absolutely and completely refute the defamatory and damaging claims made against me by her; they are entirely made up and never happened," Scott said.</p>

(The first: Wanda Sykes’ “Wanda at Large,” which premiered in 2003 on Fox.) “Insecure” briefly overlapped on HBO with “Girls,” which ended in 2017 — both descendants of the network’s “Sex and the City,” but which swapped Blahniks and Birkins for millennial angst and awkwardness.</p>

“Insecure” countered the racial homogeneity of those New York predecessors, but it also stood in contrast to other shows and films set in Los Angeles. Neighborhoods like Baldwin Hills, Windsor Hills and View Park (where Rae grew up) had rarely been seen onscreen; if South Los Angeles was portrayed at all, it tended to happen in movies like “Boyz ’N the Hood” and “Menace II Society” that depicted predominantly Black communities like Watts and Inglewood (where Rae’s father had his dental practice) as plagued by gangs and gun violence. Rae has said her goal was to make those neighborhoods feel as sexy as any other place in the city.</p>

Part of that sexiness came from the look and sound of the show’s world. Melina Matsoukas, best known when the show debuted for having just directed Beyoncé’s “Formation” video, set a visual tone as a director and executive producer. Experimental R&amp;amp;B singer Solange Knowles served as a music consultant. (Neo-soul legend Raphael Saadiq also composed music for the score.) It also came from the fashion — Molly’s couture work wardrobe, Issa’s chic political T-shirts — and from the dazzling array of natural hairstyles. The aesthetics made for a sleek, inviting backdrop to the show’s trailblazing casting, which centered two dark-skinned Black women as stars and romantic leads.</p>

But the most revolutionary aspect of “Insecure” was the abundance of decidedly unsexy moments — when Issa and friends messed up, hurt themselves and others, indulged in the kinds of mistakes and bad decisions most of us make as young adults.</p>

“True representation is the ability to show your vulnerability and be able to say, ‘I don’t have it all together, just like the next white person doesn’t have it all together,’” Rae said recently. “I think the show gave Black people permission to also be like, ‘You’re right: We are insecure.’”</p>

Like Rae and Matsoukas, most of the show’s creative team had new jobs or new levels of responsibility when “Insecure” began. The showrunner Prentice Penny and executive producer Amy Aniobi had never before filled those positions. Playing Molly was the first major acting role for Orji, a stand-up comedian. Five years later, they are a tight-knit group of veterans, proud of what they created together.</p>

For a video interview about the end of “Insecure,” Rae and Orji were together in Miami; their co-star Jay Ellis, who plays Lawrence, dialed in from that city’s airport; Aniobi was in New York City; and Matsoukas and Penny were in Los Angeles. Despite being all over, their intimacy was genuine. There was plenty of ribbing — Penny’s oversized Packers cap and Ellis’ bad phone reception were targets — but after nearly every joke came sincere reflection about a colleague’s talent or insights. Issa, when “Insecure” debuted, you described it as a show that wasn’t exclusively about the struggle of being Black but rather “just regular Black people living life.” Looking back, did it live up to that vision?</p>

I think we nailed it. The goal was to elevate regular Black people and make us look as beautiful in our regularness as humanly possible. I think we achieved that.<br />
One of the problems we show is that Black people face racial microaggressions at random. Like, in Episode 3 of the first season, when Issa Dee realized that her white co-workers were leaving her out of their emails. Not everybody’s shot by the police, but everybody knows what it feels like when white people are talking about you behind your back. Those are the things that felt regular, right? Or what is life like for a Black person on any given Tuesday? A day that’s not special, but super regular. That was our North Star.<br />
And when we did include Lawrence getting pulled over by the police, a high tension moment that we know ends up so fatally for so many men and women in our community, we asked ourselves, “How does that encounter affect the next events of your day?” We deal with these things all the time and do not get an opportunity to pause and reflect. Instead, Black people experience microaggression or racism and keep pushing. You may come home mad and yell at your partner, or you might journal. “Insecure” is more interested in those moments and how they affect your day-to-day life.</p>

Issa said in the writers’ room at one point: “When you’re white, racism is a period. Like, ‘This is wrong, this needs to stop, period.’ But when you’re Black, it’s a comma.” It’s like, this racist thing happened to me, but I still have to go pay bills, still have to drive and go home and see my kids. Yes, this thing happened, but how are you going to deal with it?<br />
"Insecure" and "Atlanta" broke ground as comedies about Black millennials. Did you feel pressure to speak for your generation?</p>

I never felt the burden of having to speak for an entire generation of people. The task we felt was to show these characters and this environment authentically. That meant actually shooting in the neighborhoods these characters are from, speaking to and incorporating those people into our storytelling, using strong female relationships and all the things that are authentic to a real, vibrant community and the world where Issa Dee comes from.<br />
Was representing Black people of varying class statuses part of that honesty? The characters Issa and Lawrence, for example, live in the Dunes, an apartment complex with predominantly working-class Black residents, even though they graduated from Stanford and Georgetown.</p>

To Melina’s point, it was authenticity. I graduated from Stanford and didn’t have a job, so I moved back to LA into my parents house, and the first place I moved to after that was a Dunes-like apartment complex where you have people of different classes.</p>

There’s this expectation that we have to be perfect and excellent all the time. I remember we when we were pitching it with the title “Insecure,” there was push back about that because insecurity is not usually associated with Black people. That was such a moment for Issa, Melina and me, and it made me realize, “No, that’s even more reason we want the show to be that.”</p>

They were like, “You guys are flawless, you’re fierce, you’re —</p>

“So dope, you’re so dope.”</p>

I’m literally feeling uncomfortable and insecure right now.</p>

The burden is the expectation that we have for what a Black man or a Black woman who went to Princeton or Stanford is supposed to be like, or what Molly had to go through being in that white law firm, right? But when we got to do the show the way Issa, Prentice, Melina and Amy wanted to do it, we didn’t have to wear a mask for anybody or live up to anybody else’s expectation. This is actual freedom.</p>

For most of you, this was your first time leading a project of this caliber. How do you look back on that risk now?</p>

I think back to our first production meeting when someone asked a really good question. And then I realized, “Oh, I’m supposed to answer that?” It was a bit like working at a teaching hospital; we were all learning for the first time together. That contributed to why we had each other’s backs so hard.</p>

We were trying to create a safe space for failure. We’re going to open the door as fast as possible to get many people in and make a safe space for Black creative people.<br />
What Issa has started for me is a chain reaction. With my specials or next projects, I’m pulling in people that I’ve seen doing amazing things but haven’t had that big break yet. I’m giving them a chance. White people are allowed to do that for their friends.<br />
If you want to get enraged, read the Wikipedia for “Seinfeld.” I’m like, what? It had so many tries.</p>

And I’ve worked with writers from “Seinfeld” and “Friends” after those shows ended, and they still get overall deals all the time. Those shows are 20 years old now. They still believe, “I think those white people still got something in them.”</p>

Even though your show was on HBO, it often felt as if it was written for a Black audience. Characters like Issa and Molly started off code-switching and working in predominantly white offices, and they quit. Their worlds and the show itself started getting more and more.</p>

With “We Got Y’all,” we just felt tired of telling those stories. There is this pressure for Black writers to talk about the Black experience within a white context. In Season 1, we were briefly encouraged to tell the point of view of the Frieda character [Issa’s white colleague at the nonprofit, played by Lisa Joyce]. Why would we do that?</p>

By Season 4, Issa was out of that environment, and Molly went to a Black firm. And when you put the characters in a Black space, you also told a realistic story of what that looks like, too. When Molly goes from the white firm to the Black firm, it’s not like, “Ah! My people!” It’s like, “Hi, this other place did it differently …” and they were like, “You can go back there.” But at the same time, she’s like, “Whatever I lost coming here, I gained this other thing that you can’t put a price tag on.”</p>

Those story lines really paralleled what was happening to us within the industry. We all came together and we were all coming from a place where we were othered, where we were the only Black person working in white spaces. Then naturally gravitating toward one another and really enjoying the freedom that comes with working with each other, speaking the same language and not having to code switch. Now we just have one code.<br />
Making a complex friendship between two dark-brown complexioned Black women, Molly and Issa, the heart of the show still seems rare, even today.</p>

That was very refreshing to see that casting breakdown and realize, “Hold up, she’s talking about me.”</p>

This is based off my real friendship. So I wasn’t interested in the trope of one light-skinned and one dark-skinned friend. I was very interested in staying true to that authentic friendship, and we often don’t get two dark-skinned Black woman leads. So that was a mandate for us, to make sure that was showcased. Portraying a desirable dark-skinned lead over the years — this is something I’m only recognizing now — greatly increased my own sense of self, too.</p>

“Insecure” is ending in a complicated moment, a year after Black Lives Matter protests ignited the country, and we are still in a pandemic. What do you hope the show’s legacy will be?</p>

There’s security in insecurity. There’s something about the journey that these characters go on by the end of Season 5 that it just feels like, “What happened on Tuesday?” I’m good with what happened Tuesday, and I’m going to keep moving on to Wednesday and not let it ruin my day or my life or whatever.</p>

I’ve got to credit Amy. We were really trying to find the right way to end the show and she told us, “We keep trying to land the plane.” Instead, she reminded us that the plane ride continues, and these characters are going to live on. That was so freeing to be able to say to each other, “Oh, we’re not ending this show.” These characters that I know and I’ve grown with are going to continue to make decisions and live on.</p>

‘Insecure’ broke ground by embracing imperfection

<p>There’s a ghoul hanging around Finneas’ house. A dark shadow spinning past the window of his otherwise sunny and calm music studio. “The way it moves, it catches your eye at the wrong time,” he said. It spooks him.</p>

You could be forgiven for thinking that Finneas, 24, the multi-instrumentalist who’s earned a global following — and eight Grammys — as the producer and songwriting collaborator of his teen-phenom sister Billie Eilish, is a little goth. As siblings, their work is often not just brooding but haunted, even deviant. Finneas’ debut studio album as a solo artist, released on Friday and entitled “Optimist” (“it’s aspirational,” he told me) features a track called “The Kids Are All Dying,” followed shortly by “Love Is Pain.” With his vocals at a ballad pitch, it is suffused with generational and personal anxiety, along with the gloss of romance.</p>

So it was with the ghoul — Halloween décor, put up by Finneas’ girlfriend, the social media personality Claudia Sulewski, while he was out of town. (He was mystified that it didn’t creep her out.) Finneas isn’t a prince of darkness, but he is forthcoming about his fears. Emotionally unfiltered, confessional: “It’s kind of how I am, on and off the microphone,” he said.</p>

The studio is where he works out those feelings. Except for the first track’s subtle violin and cello, he wrote, performed, arranged and produced “Optimist” entirely on his own, playing all the instruments (bass, guitar, piano, synths, and doing the drum programming and sound effects). “It was like, why you would build your own house if you were a carpenter,” he said, sitting barefoot and cross-legged on a rolling chair in his studio here recently, in ripped jeans and bed head. “Why would I hire someone else to do something I know how to do and can execute myself? And it’s also really fun.”</p>

It’s a significant insult on this show, on which the question of who does and doesn’t qualify as “real” comes up repeatedly. Most shockingly, it arises in the corporate designation for incidents of sexual abuse and violence against workers on the cruise lines owned by the family business, Waystar Royco: “NRPI,” or No Real Person Involved.</p>

This chilling language gets to a core theme of “Succession”: that today’s very rich have become more different from you and me than F. Scott Fitzgerald could have dreamed. The Roys, and the handful of hyperrich that they move among, are not simply a breed apart from us. They have become another species.</p>

“Succession,” whose scabrously funny third season begins Sunday, is superficially in the same genre as “Dynasty,” “Dallas” and other bygone soaps about the unhappy superrich. Minus the lyrically deployed obscenities, it would have fit perfectly on prime time in 1981 with its thumbnail premise: Kendall, Roman and their sister, Shiv (Sarah Snook), strive and connive to become either the favorite of their mogul dad, Logan (Brian Cox), or his destroyer.</p>

<p><br />
But in key ways, the show is also nothing like its predecessors, because being rich is nothing like it used to be.</p>

The wicked oil tycoons of ’80s TV soaps were different from you and me in the way of Ernest Hemingway’s rejoinder to Fitzgerald: They had more money. They used that money the way their viewers would have if they had won the lottery. The opening sequence of the original “Dynasty” is a time-capsule rendering of champagne wishes and caviar dreams, with John Forsythe cradling a snifter of something expensive and Joan Collins wearing bejeweled earrings the size of squash racquets.</p>

<p><br />
Like wealth itself today, “Succession” is both a logical progression from its Reagan-era predecessors and something of an entirely different order. The show is made for a time when the richest are proportionally so much richer that it has made them alien. (Even the ones not literally going to space.)</p>

Being rich, on “Succession,” does not look fun. If anything, it is aggressively anti-fun, as if fun itself were just a tatty concept for the lumpen masses who crowd the family’s amusement parks.</p>

The show’s libido is not hot but warped; Roman, for instance, gets most aroused by being shamed and insulted, preferably by the family consigliere Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron). Its aesthetic is not glitzy but cold.<br />
The opening episodes of the new season — which pick up immediately from Season 2’s climax in which Kendall dramatically pinned the cruise ship cover-ups on his father — take place largely in conference rooms and on tarmacs, in the interiors of airplanes and corporate cars. The Roys move from one sleek, arid bubble to another. Occasionally they go to parties, which look like conceptual art installations and feel like work.</p>

<p><br />
Compared with the covetable glitter of ’80s soaps, the modern luxury of “Succession” is both unattainable and alienating. It says, not only will you never have this, you NRP, your primitive mind doesn’t even have the cultivation to want it.</p>

<p><br />
This may be one reason that “Succession,” unlike its predecessors, is a niche sensation rather than a mass broadcast hit. It’s a bitter acquired taste, like expensive imported licorice, with twisted pleasures but little wish fulfillment.</p>

<p><br />
Unless, at least, the wish is for untouchability. The Roys’ surname — &lt;em&gt;roi&lt;/em&gt;, king — is an understatement. They are more like Greek gods. They may occasionally descend and sport among us. But they recognize obligations only to one another — if that — and they can be hurt only by their own transhuman kind. (Vulture reported that the creator, Jesse Armstrong, decided not to rewrite the new episodes to address COVID-19, in part on the theory that the pandemic doesn’t really touch people like them.)</p>

<p><br />
The new season, the most overtly political and gleefully dark one yet, is focused on whether the forces of reckoning can penetrate the force fields of the Roys and their ilk. It is not optimistic.</p>

<p><br />
As Logan musters his defense, he leans on the show’s fictional American president, an unseen Republican he derisively calls “the raisin.” In the end, raisins are grapes, and grapes are meant to be stomped. Or cultivated, when the old ones stop giving juice.</p>

<p><br />
With an election looming, Logan — who owns a Fox-like cable news network with conservative kingmaking power — begins auditioning candidates, including a slick quasi-fascist played by Justin Kirk. To Logan, the leader of the free world is, as he puts it in Season 1, basically an “intern.” This may explain his contempt for the presidential ambitions of his oldest son, Connor (Alan Ruck): Connor’s dream isn’t just absurd, it’s slumming.</p>

<p><br />
Is there anyone good in all of this? Shiv, once a political consultant of modest principle, has ideals she’ll cling to a touch longer than the other Roys, before discarding them like a champagne flute onto a waiter’s tray. Roman is an irresistible imp, but his eternal joking-not-joking mode makes him all the more sneakily dangerous, like a circa-2016 internet memelord.</p>

<p><br />
Beyond the family core, you get to the characters who are merely morally weak in the way you or I might be if thrown into this world. Shiv’s husband, Tom (Matthew Macfadyen), is an arriviste with a tormenting awareness of his dispensability. Greg (Nicholas Braun), a cousin from a poorer branch of the family, is delightfully squirmy, a worm constantly twisting to avoid the hook and maybe wriggle a few inches higher up the fishing line.</p>

<p><br />
Greg’s haplessness makes him sympathetic, but is he honorable? His grandfather Ewan (James Cromwell), Logan’s embittered brother, tells him in the new season that he is “in the service of a monstrous enterprise.” Ewan may be a sanctimonious scold — he is the most principled and least likable character on the show — but he is not wrong.</p>

<p><br />
That’s “Succession” for you. The best lack all charisma, while the worst are full of panache and intensity.<br />
This is where the Kendall 2.0 of the new season is especially interesting. You might expect him, in rebel mode, to fill the Bobby Ewing good-guy role, and it’s hard to argue with his attack on the toxic Waystar culture.</p>

<p><br />
But he comes off like a rich poseur trying to make idealism his #brand, manically quoting progressive catchphrases the way he spat bad rap at a Season-2 party for Logan. Morality, for him, is like an exciting new market in which he can claim first-mover advantage — or like a handy Oedipal cudgel to brain his father with.</p>

<p><br />
The only unifying figure is Logan, the blustering, manipulative Kronos whose children vie to make sure he doesn’t snack on them first. He always seems to be tantalizingly close to destruction — corporate, legal or physical — yet his kids can never shake the fear that he will rise vengefully from his sickbed like the father from Kafka’s “The Judgment.” There is no tyrant as absolute as the one who knew you when you were in diapers.</p>

<p><br />
But the evil genius of “Succession” is that it knows that drama pulls the audience to want to root for someone regardless. You skip from one allegiance to another — Team Shiv, no, Team Gerri, no, Team Greg! — as if hopping barefoot on hot pavement. The viewers are like the citizens of a country fallen to one-party authoritarian rule. The good guys are not going to win; the good guys are not even in the game. You can only hope to see a terrible person do something terrible to a more terrible person.<br />
This makes “Succession” both an addictive spectator sport and one of TV’s great horror stories. We NRPs can enjoy it knowing that we have no stake, except for the tiny fact that people like the Roys run the world. And we can take comfort in the certainty that whoever wins out in this Greek drama — whoever, in Roman’s words, ends up “climbing Mount Olympus to be the new Dr. Zeus” — will at least have the decency not to enjoy it.</p>

It says, not only will you never have this, you NRP, your primitive mind doesn’t even have the cultivation to want it. This may be one reason that “Succession,” unlike its predecessors, is a niche sensation rather than a mass broadcast hit. It’s a bitter acquired taste, like expensive imported licorice, with twisted pleasures but little wish fulfillment. Unless, at least, the wish is for untouchability. The Roys’ surname — <em>roi</em>, king — is an understatement. They are more like Greek gods. They may occasionally descend and sport among us. But they recognize obligations only to one another — if that — and they can be hurt only by their own transhuman kind. (Vulture reported that the creator, Jesse Armstrong, decided not to rewrite the new episodes to address COVID-19, in part on the theory that the pandemic doesn’t really touch people like them.) The new season, the most overtly political and gleefully dark one yet, is focused on whether the forces of reckoning can penetrate the force fields of the Roys and their ilk. It is not optimistic. As Logan musters his defense, he leans on the show’s fictional American president, an unseen Republican he derisively calls “the raisin.” In the end, raisins are grapes, and grapes are meant to be stomped. Or cultivated, when the old ones stop giving juice. With an election looming, Logan — who owns a Fox-like cable news network with conservative kingmaking power — begins auditioning candidates, including a slick quasi-fascist played by Justin Kirk. To Logan, the leader of the free world is, as he puts it in Season 1, basically an “intern.” This may explain his contempt for the presidential ambitions of his oldest son, Connor (Alan Ruck): Connor’s dream isn’t just absurd, it’s slumming. Is there anyone good in all of this? Shiv, once a political consultant of modest principle, has ideals she’ll cling to a touch longer than the other Roys, before discarding them like a champagne flute onto a waiter’s tray. Roman is an irresistible imp, but his eternal joking-not-joking mode makes him all the more sneakily dangerous, like a circa-2016 internet memelord. Beyond the family core, you get to the characters who are merely morally weak in the way you or I might be if thrown into this world. Shiv’s husband, Tom (Matthew Macfadyen), is an arriviste with a tormenting awareness of his dispensability. Greg (Nicholas Braun), a cousin from a poorer branch of the family, is delightfully squirmy, a worm constantly twisting to avoid the hook and maybe wriggle a few inches higher up the fishing line. Greg’s haplessness makes him sympathetic, but is he honorable? His grandfather Ewan (James Cromwell), Logan’s embittered brother, tells him in the new season that he is “in the service of a monstrous enterprise.” Ewan may be a sanctimonious scold — he is the most principled and least likable character on the show — but he is not wrong. That’s “Succession” for you. The best lack all charisma, while the worst are full of panache and intensity. This is where the Kendall 2.0 of the new season is especially interesting. You might expect him, in rebel mode, to fill the Bobby Ewing good-guy role, and it’s hard to argue with his attack on the toxic Waystar culture. But he comes off like a rich poseur trying to make idealism his #brand, manically quoting progressive catchphrases the way he spat bad rap at a Season-2 party for Logan. Morality, for him, is like an exciting new market in which he can claim first-mover advantage — or like a handy Oedipal cudgel to brain his father with. The only unifying figure is Logan, the blustering, manipulative Kronos whose children vie to make sure he doesn’t snack on them first. He always seems to be tantalizingly close to destruction — corporate, legal or physical — yet his kids can never shake the fear that he will rise vengefully from his sickbed like the father from Kafka’s “The Judgment.” There is no tyrant as absolute as the one who knew you when you were in diapers. But the evil genius of “Succession” is that it knows that drama pulls the audience to want to root for someone regardless. You skip from one allegiance to another — Team Shiv, no, Team Gerri, no, Team Greg! — as if hopping barefoot on hot pavement. The viewers are like the citizens of a country fallen to one-party authoritarian rule. The good guys are not going to win; the good guys are not even in the game. You can only hope to see a terrible person do something terrible to a more terrible person. This makes “Succession” both an addictive spectator sport and one of TV’s great horror stories. We NRPs can enjoy it knowing that we have no stake, except for the tiny fact that people like the Roys run the world. And we can take comfort in the certainty that whoever wins out in this Greek drama — whoever, in Roman’s words, ends up “climbing Mount Olympus to be the new Dr. Zeus” — will at least have the decency not to enjoy it.

‘Succession’ Returns, with no real people involved

<p>Lance Bass is father to two little babies now!</p>

<p>The *NSYNC singer has welcomed a baby boy and a baby girl into the world &nbsp;with his husband, Michael Turchin. The couple has named them Violet Betty and Alexander James respectively and these new addition to the Bass-Turchin family happened via surrogate, reports claim.</p>

<p>On Thursday, Bass took to Instagram to share that the day before, the 'baby dragons' had arrived.&nbsp;<br />
"The baby dragons have arrived!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I can not express how much love I feel right now. Thank you for all the kind wishes. It meant a lot. Now, how do you change a diaper??! Ahhhhhhhh!" Bass captioned the twins' birth certificates he has posted as part of the announcement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bass and Turchin have been married since 2014 and announced in June of this year that they were expecting twins.</p>

<p>In July, Bass said the surrogate was 25 weeks pregnant and their twins were 'growing beautifully'.&nbsp;<br />
"I can't believe we will be dads in less than 3 months!" he had written.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2018, Bass told a global news website that they were starting the process to have kids.</p>

<p>"It's something we're very excited about. I mean, the reason I wanted to get married to this guy is I know he'll be an amazing dad," he had said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Unfortunately, Bass revealed in March of 2020 that his surrogate had been eight weeks pregnant with a baby boy before losing the pregnancy to miscarriage. It was his and Turchin's ninth IVF attempt.&nbsp;<br />
"It's been a very long process, years in the making. There have been a lot of ups and downs … way more downs than ups," Bass said, reportedly.&nbsp;</p>

"You try to trick yourself into not getting excited because you know anything can happen at any time, especially in those first few weeks when there's a huge possibility that the [embryos] won't stick," he explained. <p>Singer-songwriter Gloria, husband Emilio Estefan and niece Lili have opened up about their respective journeys of fleeing their home country of Cuba when they were mere kids.</p>

<p>On Thursday, in the episode of 'Red Table Talk: The Estefans'--Gloria, Lili and Emily--talked about the ongoing human rights crisis in Cuba and talked in great detail about their own harrowing experiences of fleeing the country when they were children.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I left Cuba when I was literally two and a half years old. In May of 1960 I was brought to the U.S. because my father was a police officer for the Cuban government. The night of the coup, that Fidel Castro took over power, my father came home and he told my mother, 'We’re in trouble, the president just left the country.' "And she said, 'Don’t go back, they’re going to arrest you,' and he said, 'I have to go back, my job is to protect the Cuban people.'" Gloria said.</p>

<p>Gloria 's father and grandfather were prisoned in their effort to protect the Cuban people, she claimed. Soon, they realised they had to flee the country they had ever known.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"His father, who was a commander in the army, and him were jailed. They let him go about three, four months later and he told my mother, 'I have to get you out of Cuba because this is going to get very bad.' They knew who Fidel Castro was, what was coming, because Castro attached himself to communism. My father left Cuba, he went to the U.S. My mother and I came through Pan Am airlines. I have the roundtrip ticket still," Gloria added.</p>

<p>Gloria's husband, Emilio and his niece, Lili, have similar stories to tell.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I was born in a place where there’s no freedom of speech -- you are told how to think, what to say, and what to believe. You are taught from a very early age that Fidel is the Commander in Chief...the whole island is like a military base," Lili said.</p>

And after that, it was on a Mother’s Day when my father sat me down, I will never forget, 1980, he says, 'Guys, there’s an opportunity for you and your brother to get out of Cuba. Are you guys willing?' How do you make those decisions when you’re 13? That’s one of the biggest problems with the communist regime, they have separated families. And I think this is one of the...why we wanted to tape this show, because we want to do anything to reunite these families again," she went on to add.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Emilio's story is not too different from Gloria's and Lili's. He, too, had to be separated from his immediate family to ensure safetry: for himself and those he loved.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I was 11 years old when they came to my house looking for dollars because Castro decided to change the money. They looked around and went to the safe. My dad got nervous and couldn't open the safe. They blew out the whole wall and found nothing. That night, I cried all night, and in the morning I told my mother I was leaving. Four years later, I was almost military age, we were leaving because my mom was from Spain. I cried leaving Cuba, but my mom said, 'Don't cry.' One of the hardest things for me, was my grandfather and uncles gave me a photograph and said, 'You will never see me again.' I never saw them again," Emilio said.</p>

"We had no money to speak of. He got in a 20-foot boat! You don’t get in the ocean in a 20-foot boat," Gloria said of Emilio chartering the boat to get his family out of Cuba. "None of them knew what they were doing, what they did was run out of gas. For 10 days they were lost at sea, and all I kept hearing through the news was -- the name of their boat was Popea, but there were other ones -- and they said there’s been a Popea lost at sea. I’m pregnant here, I don’t know what’s happening."</p>

For Emilio, food and water meant nothing in comparison to the lives of his family members.&nbsp;</p>

"You’ll know when you have kids in the future what you’d do for your family. The only thing we do is try to save our family to be in a free country. So we spent six days without eating and hardly drinking any water, and then when I get there, they say, 'The boat is too small, you cannot be able to bring them back,'" Emilio shared.</p>

<p>It was six months before Gloria and Emilio could obtain visas that legally allowed them to bring their families to the U.S. It's something Lili is grateful for.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Thank you both, for you [Gloria] letting him go and you [Emilio] risking your life to save mine, my father’s and my brother’s," Lili said to the couple. "I have worked so hard for you guys to be proud of me. For you to know that it was not in vain."</p>

<p>"Of course it was not in vain!" Gloria exclaimed. "It was the best thing to happen in my life," Emilio concluded.</p>

<p>'Riverdale' writer Evan Kyle confirmed this during an Q&amp;A session on Wednesday after the season 5 finale. Further, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed the same in a statement to EW.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We've been talking about having Sabrina visit Riverdale since season 1, so it's thrilling that this is finally happening, as part of our 'Rivervale' special event. It's also perfect that she shows up to help Cheryl Blossom during her hour of greatest need. Everyone on set lost their minds — I think fans will, too. It's really fun and special," Aguirre-Sacasa said.</p>

I never thought this could happen to me. At just 36, with 3 kiddos, and a wife that loves me. I want to be able to help those that might experience something, maybe, hopefully. By showing that it’s possible to make it through," he wrote in a separate post. "I want to be able to help those that might be experiencing something like this- a life altering disease full of questions and doubt- maybe, hopefully. I think even just the language of being like, ‘Hey, I’m sorry that I’ve been distant with you or snappy with you. I’m just struggling and I’m feeling kind of anxious.’ That level of transparency really helps a lot," Cabello reportedly said.&nbsp;</p>

How do I do that when I feel nervous?’ I did this without being like, ‘Am I even happy right now? Do I even feel healthy?’ I didn’t have the space to ask myself those questions. I’m still working a ton now, but after quarantine I’m able to be like, ‘You know what? Right now I’m just not happy. I need to change something'."</p>

<p>Social media and its negativity has had an impact on Camila Cabello, but the singer is working her way around it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When stuff that’s negative is out there, it’s going to get to you. So yeah, that’s very, very challenging. I feel like it’s another thing therapy has been really helpful for," she said.</p>
