Asian Games 2026: India survive Pakistan fightback for place in gold medal match of men's hockey

At just 18, Sakshi Rana walked into her first senior FIH Women's World Cup carrying little more than the belief that she belonged. She walked out of it with a memorable goal, a historic fifth-place finish and the conviction that India’s next generation is ready to take women’s hockey forward. The young forward has been steadily making her mark on the international stage. She made her senior India debut in February last year and later served as vice-captain of the junior team at the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup in Santiago in December, scoring three goals in the tournament. Her progress continued at the senior level, where she has scored two goals in 12 appearances and played an important role in India’s qualification for the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium & Netherlands 2026. But the World Cup in particular gave Rana a moment she will remember for a long time. Her goal against South Africa was one of the highlights of India’s campaign and was recognised as the FIH Goal of the Day. Recalling the moment, Rana admitted that there was little time to think. “I think, when the rebound came, I thought that it was a goal at first so I didn't think much about it. I just thought that I will give it a try. So, I just tried it," she said in an exclusive interview with WION. The goal arrived almost instinctively, and so did her celebration. When that rebound came, my reaction was so quick. I didn't even realize it. I mean, it was very quick. It was a World Cup goal.” Her World Cup journey was also about learning to handle pressure. After India’s draw to Australia, the team had a meeting in which the coach urged the players not to overthink the situation. “The coach told us to don't take any kind of pressure. Play your natural game. If you think too much, you are under pressure.” That advice resonated with Rana, who was experiencing the intensity of a senior World Cup for the first time. Also Read: WION Exclusive | ‘A lot of young talent’: Sjoerd Marijne on the next generation driving India’s hockey rise
Watch Sakshi's goal against South Africa

The presence of experienced players also helped. Rana spoke warmly about the senior members of the Indian team, including Savita, Salima, Nikki and Navneet, saying their support gave the younger players confidence. “I mean, we get motivation from them, from the seniors. Among the senior players, Rana shared a particularly close equation with Neha, whom she knows from the same hockey ground and university. “We are from the same ground. We are from the same university. So, we know each other well.” For Rana, however, the World Cup was not just about her own breakthrough. It was also evidence of the depth emerging in Indian women’s hockey. India’s campaign featured 11 World Cup debutants, many of whom had gained valuable exposure through the Women's Hockey India League. Rana herself has experienced the benefits of the league and believes it has become an important bridge between domestic hockey and the demands of international competition. “There is a lot of pressure in the World Cup and the game is played very fast." She believes the intensity of HIL prepares young players for exactly that environment. “HIL is very important for us. The experience, the physical toughness, etc we get that in HIL teaches us how to play in big tournaments and big matches.” It is perhaps that experience that helped Rana and the other young players approach their first World Cup without being overawed by the occasion. “We didn't think that we are young. It's okay. It's was our first World Cup. So, we didn't think that we are young.”Instead, the youngsters entered the tournament with ambition. “We wanted to play in the final. But, we couldn't play. But, everyone had the same target. And, we all have the same goal going forward.” For Rana, that mindset could prove crucial to India’s future. She believes the group of young players who made their World Cup debuts can eventually take the team to the highest level. “Yes, absolutely. Everyone has the same target.” Her own most memorable moment from the tournament? There was no hesitation. “I think it will be the goal against South Africa.” It was a goal that announced Rana on the biggest stage, but perhaps more importantly, it reflected the fearlessness she brought to her first World Cup. That confidence has been building for some time. Rana was also nominated for the Hockey India Asunta Lakra Award for Upcoming Player of the Year 2025, recognition that she described as a source of motivation rather than pressure. “I was delighted when I found out. It felt like the hard work that I’ve been putting in is not going unnoticed." Now, after a breakthrough World Cup campaign, the teenager has more than an award nomination or a Goal of the Day to look back on. She has a taste of what it takes to compete at the highest level, and a growing belief that India’s young brigade can go even further. For Sakshi, the message is simple: work hard, trust the process and, when the moment comes, play your game.

Hockey India President Dilip Kumar Tirkey on Thursday (Jul 30) defended the decision to change the Indian men's and women's hockey teams' primary blue jerseys to orange, saying the move was based on feedback from players, coaches and support staff over visibility issues on blue turf, which made it harder for players to see each other during matches. The new jersey has sparked debate, with former India captain and Olympian Viren Rasquinha questioning the decision, while Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also criticised the change. Speaking to ANI, Tirkey said that the new jerseys were unveiled ahead of the FIH Men’s and Women’s Hockey World Cups, which begin on Aug 14 and 15 in the Netherlands and Belgium. “So this time, the orange colour has been chosen. And yes, I accept that for many years, there was a legacy where Team India used to wear blue. We have played many tournaments, many important tournaments wearing blue… even I played wearing blue. But the change that has been made this time–and this is not the first time; in 2014 as well, I think the team wore yellow, and in 2018 too, light blue was used–a suggestion came directly from our coaches, supporting staff, players, and team captains,” Tirkey told ANI. Also Read - Indian men's team blitz England 3-0 to reach Commonwealth TT Championship final Explaining the reason behind the change, Tirkey said players and coaches felt the blue jersey reduced visibility because it matched the colour of the turf. “Their suggestion was that on the field, the hockey turf is blue, and the players’ playing kit was also blue. So technical visibility during play was affected because of that overlap. Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said the switch from blue to orange jerseys was made on the recommendation of players and coaches due to visibility issues on blue turf.

Somewhere, they were feeling that issue,” he said. He added that the team suggested two colours , yellow and orange, and orange was chosen because it is one of the colours in the Indian national flag. “They suggested two colour options: yellow and orange. It was noted that orange is also one of our national colours from the Indian flag. So orange was chosen and designed accordingly. If after the tournament or in the future the players feel otherwise, we can work again on improving the kit colour,” he said. The sports ministry has directed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to constitute a neutral, fair and transparent committee to investigate allegations made by former India women's hockey captain Asunta Lakra. The ministry has also sought an explanation from Hockey India over the matter, indicating closer scrutiny of how the federation handled the complaints, sources in sports ministry told news agency ANI. The move follows serious allegations made by Lakra, who claimed Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh threatened her after she raised concerns about alleged misconduct by Jharkhand coach Sudhir Gola towards female players at the state's Eklavya Centre. Lakra, a former India international who represented the country at the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games and two Asia Cups, said she spoke out to protect young players and was allegedly warned to ‘stay within your limits’. In exclusive interview with WION, Deepika talks about her journey, her performance in past year and much more.

Roots in wrestling, destiny in hockey

Deepika hails from a family deeply rooted in wrestling. Her father and elder brother were both accomplished wrestlers, and growing up, she was surrounded by the sport. Watching her brother train at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Hisar, she was initially drawn to the rigorous discipline of wrestling. However, fate had other plans for her.
Her transition from wrestling to hockey was almost accidental. While accompanying her brother to practice sessions, she found herself captivated by the game of hockey. It wasn’t long before she picked up a stick and started training under the guidance of coach Azad Singh Malik. His mentorship was instrumental in shaping her early skills, and soon, Deepika was completely immersed in the sport. She developed a keen understanding of the game, blending her physical strength from wrestling with the finesse required in hockey.

The journey

Deepika’s rise in the hockey world has been meteoric. Her exceptional performances in junior-level tournaments quickly caught the attention of selectors, and she was soon representing India on the international stage. As a forward, her ability to score crucial goals and execute drag flicks with precision made her a formidable presence on the field.
To date, Deepika has played 56 matches for India, scoring an impressive 27 goals. Her journey has been filled with challenges, but she has faced each one with unwavering resolve. Whether it was adjusting to the demands of international hockey or maintaining peak fitness levels, she has constantly pushed herself to improve.
A defining moment in her career was India’s triumph at the 2024 Women’s Asian Champions Trophy, where she played a pivotal role in securing victory. Her ability to perform under pressure and contribute significantly to the team’s success established her as one of the brightest young talents in Indian hockey.

The emotional connection: A photo that tells a story

Among the many milestones in Deepika’s journey, one photograph holds a special place in her heart. It is an old picture showing a young Deepika standing alongside Savita Punia, the veteran goalkeeper of the Indian women’s hockey team.
For Deepika, that photo is an emotional treasure. She recalls how, at that time, she knew little about what it took to play for India. She only knew that the players she admired would return to training camps after coming back from the tournaments. She attended functions where these players were honoured, never imagining that one day she would stand among them.
The memory of being garlanded by those she once looked up to remains etched in her mind. It was a moment of realisation—her childhood dream had turned into reality. Sharing the picture with Savita, they both reminisce about the times when senior players would return from camps and gift her their T-shirts and kits. Now, Deepika is not just a part of the team but a key contributor to its victories. The journey from a fan to a teammate is one that fills her with immense pride.

The making of a champion

One of Deepika’s defining skills is her drag flick, a technique that requires immense power and precision. She credits her mastery of the drag flick to Rupinder Pal Singh, one of India’s finest drag-flickers. Under his guidance, she honed the nuances of the technique, developing the strength and accuracy needed to excel in high-pressure situations.
Before every match, Deepika meticulously studies her opponents, analysing their goalkeepers’ movements and defensive strategies. She works closely with the coaching staff to strategise, ensuring that she is always prepared to exploit weaknesses in the opposition’s defense. This level of preparation has made her one of the most promising forwards in Indian hockey today.

Awards galore

Deepika’s hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed. At the 2024 Hockey India Annual Awards, she was honored with the prestigious Asunta Lakra Award for Upcoming Player of the Year (Women – Under 21). This recognition is a testament to her exceptional performances and the bright future that lies ahead for her in Indian hockey.
Receiving the award was an emotional moment for Deepika. She humbly acknowledged that while her performance in the past year had not been perfect, the nomination itself was a huge honor. She emphasised that hockey is a team sport and that every player’s contribution is vital to the team’s success.

The dream

Playing at the international level comes with immense pressure, and Deepika is no stranger to it. Representing India means carrying the hopes of a billion, and the expectations are always high. However, she thrives under this pressure, using it as motivation to keep improving. Her ultimate goal is to bring more glory to Indian women’s hockey and inspire young athletes to pursue the sport. Hockey India has raised an official complaint over 'umpiring and decision-making' during their quarterfinal match against Great Britain on Sunday (Aug 4) at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

India went on to win the match 4-2 in shootout after the score was level at 1-1 at the completion of four quarters. It is to be noted that India played most of the match with 10 players after Amit Rohidas was given a red card in the second quarter of the match.

"The complaint focuses on a critical match between India and Great Britain, where several inconsistencies in officiating potentially influenced the game's outcome," said Hockey India in a statement.

The issues listed in the organisation's statement are as follows:

Inconsistent video umpire reviews, particularly regarding the red card decision for an Indian player, which has eroded trust in the video review system.

Coaching of a goalkeeper from behind the goalpost during the shoot-out.

Use of a video tablet by a goalkeeper during the shoot-out.

"These incidents have undermined confidence in the officiating process among players, coaches, and fans. Hockey India calls for a thorough review of these matters to uphold the integrity of the sport and ensure fair play in future matches," the statement further added.

During the match, skipper Harmanpreet Singh scored a goal to take India in front after Rohidas' exit.

Great Britain's Morton Lee scored the equaliser nearly five minutes later in the same quarter, and the score remained 1-1 for the remainder of the game.

India goalkepper PR Sreejesh displayed exemplary skills to save attempts from the Brits in the shootout, while the Indians scored on all four attempts.

India will next play the winner of Argentina vs Germany in the semi-final on Tuesday (Aug 6).

Hockey India names 16-member squad for Paris Olympics; Harmanpreet announced captrain

The Indian men's hockey team survived some anxious moments before defeating Argentina 5-4 in the shootout after both teams were locked at 2-2 at the end of regulation time in a FIH Pro League match here on Wednesday. Mandeep Singh (11th minute) and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay scored two field goals for India, while Argentina found the net from penalty corners through Lucas Martinez (20th) and Tomas Domene (60th).

In the shootout, skipper Harmanpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh scored twice each with Abhishek being the other scorer. It was a keen contest between India and Argentina in the first half. While world no.6 India dominated the first quarter, the Los Leones, ranked a rung below, were the better side in the next 15 minutes. The Indians started on a positive note with Sanjay getting the first shot at the goal in the fifth minute, but his reverse hit was saved by an alert Argentina goalkeeper Tomas Santiago. But India were not to be denied for long as six minutes later, Mandeep scored from a field effort after being fed by Rajkumar Pal.

The Argentines came close seconds from the first quarter, hitting the post first and then from the rebound Maico Casella scored, but by then, the hooter went up to keep India's lead intact. Interestingly, India's chief coach Craig Fulton continued with veteran PR Sreejesh in front of the goal, indicating his preference for the sole goalkeeper's slot in the final Paris Olympics squad.

Argentina pushed hard and slowly started to build pressure on the Indian defence in the second quarter. Argentina, in the process, got three quick penalty corners, the last of which was converted by Lucas Martinez from a rebound after Sreejesh made a brilliant save to keep out Nicolas della Torre's fierce flick.

In the final five minutes of the second quarter, the Indians secured three back-to-back penalty corners but skipper Harmanpreet failed to find the back of the net. It was a neck-and-neck fight between the two sides after the change of ends with both India and Argentina managing a few circle entries but goals eluded them.

Seconds from the third quarter, India had a bright chance through Abhishek but his reverse hit was off target. Then, India scored through Lalit, who pushed in Jarmanpreet Singh's pass.

Down by a goal, a desperate Argentina withdrew their goalkeeper for an extra field player in search of the equaliser.

Their ploy worked as they exerted tremendous pressure on the Indian defence, which conceded two penalty corners seconds from the final hooter, and Sreejesh was beaten by a fierce fierce flick from Domene to take the match into shootout. The Indian men's team will take on hosts Belgium on Friday in the European leg of the Pro League.

FIH Pro League: Indian men overcome scare to go past Argentina 5-4 in shootout

On Wednesday (Feb 28), Hockey India released a joint statement in response to former senior women's team coach Janneke Schopman and outgoing CEO Elena Norman's allegations about differential treatment and division in the governing body. Schopman, who resigned from her post after women's team's failure to qualify for Paris Olympics, and Norman recently made heads turn with their serious claims.

Now, the Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey and Secretary General, Bhola Nath Singh, have rubbished all allegations. "Recently there have been statements by outgoing officials published in the media, claiming that there are divisions within the organisation. This is not correct. We remain united in working together, and as always in the best interest of the sport."

"The Federation has treated the teams and all players equally with equal benefits and training facilities, including cash awards and monetary recognition that is at-par and is purely based on performance. We have built our ethos around equity and equal opportunities right from the grassroots levels across states as well as on a national level."

"We now seek the ongoing support of ardent hockey fans to continue to back what is important - the teams and the players like they have always done in this important year. And we look forward to keep our entire focus on the task at hand," read the statement.

On the sidelines of the FIH Pro League early this month, the former Netherlands player Schopman stated, "Because I come from a culture where women are respected and valued. I don’t feel that here. From not very many people – and I do feel people working here on the ground are amazing from Hockey India. But I feel it’s so hard."

She further opined, "I look at the difference in how men’s coaches are treated between me and the men’s coach, or the girls and the men’s team, just in general. They never complain and they work so hard. I am not saying, I don’t know, I don’t know why and I shouldn’t speak for them so I won't."

"I love them. I think they work so hard, they do what I ask, they wanna learn, wanna do new things but for me personally coming from the Netherlands, having worked in the USA, this country is extremely difficult as a woman, coming from a culture where, yeah, you can have an opinion and it’s valued. It’s really hard," the Dutch woman added.

Meanwhile, the 49-year-old Norman told PTI that there were two factions in Hockey India. In addition, she claimed that the environment had become suffocating.

Norman explained, "Absolutely, it was getting tough to deliver in the fight between two factions. The environment was becoming suffocating. There are two factions in Hockey India. We remain united in working together, and as always in the best interest of the sport." "The Federation has treated the teams and all players equally with equal benefits and training facilities, including cash awards and monetary recognition that is at-par and is purely based on performance. We have built our ethos around equity and equal opportunities right from the grassroots levels across states as well as on a national level." "We now seek the ongoing support of ardent hockey fans to continue to back what is important - the teams and the players like they have always done in this important year. And we look forward to keep our entire focus on the task at hand," read the statement. This became India's fourth title in the Asian Champions Trophy and first-ever since the 2018 edition, where they ended as the joint-winners along with arch-rivals Pakistan. The whole squad was on a roll throughout the tournament. Harmanpreet led from the front, ending with as many as nine goals, whereas Arshdeep also scored on four instances, including the decisive goal in the finale. Above all, India's fitness stood out as the players were upbeat after trailing for long in the summit clash and didn't get bogged down from doing the hard yards.

Earlier, Japan beat South Korea 5-3 to settle for bronze whereas Pakistan finished fifth after their win against China on Friday (August 11). For India, the win is crucial with the Asian Games to be held later this year, commencing next month in China.

Commenting on her unexplained and sudden exclusion from the team, Rani said whatever happened to her in the past two years was wrong, adding despite being the top-scorer at the National Games, she didn’t get picked and left it to the Chief Selector and the Coach to answer for this.

“Whatever happened with me in the last two years wasn’t right. I came back from an injury, was the top scorer at the National Games but wasn’t picked. The best person who can answer this is the Chief Coach or the selectors because I don’t know the answer,” Rani Rampal said, as quoted by The Indian Express.

‘Not going anywhere’

Upon being asked if getting a new role is any indication of her career coming to an end, Rani said, “I am not retiring since I know I still have more to give to the sport as a player. I have this thing in me to not give up. If I had to, I’d have given up after the Olympics. I accepted this since is a short-term programme that could be converted into a long-term project. Initially, it’s a 45-day camp.”

While Sardar (among the selectors) remained tight-lipped on the matter, saying he wasn’t present in the meeting when this decision was taken, legendary Indian hockey star and Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey came up saying he has spoken with both coach and the selector regarding Rani’s exclusion from the team.

“We can understand Rani isn’t in the team, and we have asked the coach and selector why such a player isn’t included. When a team is selected, the president and secretary don’t interfere, it’s the responsibility of the selectors and coach. I have spoken to Rani, who was very upset. We can’t share all the details, but after talking to her, we proposed to her the offer to become a coach,” Tirkey said.

FIH Hockey Pro League: Hockey India announces 24-member national men's squad

Hockey has once again regained mileage in the country. In the recent past, Indian teams have brought several laurels to the nation and earned accolades for their performances. The senior men's team won bronze in the Tokyo Olympics, after a 41-year-hiatus, whereas the women's team ended fourth -- their best-ever showing -- after a close defeat at the hands of Great Britain.

While the senior men's and women's teams are making heads turn and contributing to the game's growth and popularity nationwide, the elusive World Cup title continues to evade countrymen since 1975; their solitary trophy at the showpiece event (which came in the men's category). The current Indian men's team, who is an eight-time Olympic champion overall, is a promising unit but bowed out of the last two World Cups in the quarter-finals and crossovers, respectively.

In the 2023 Hockey World Cup, held in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, Harmanpreet Singh-led India won twice and drew a game in the group stage before losing to New Zealand in the crossovers in an epic battle. The match was interestingly poised at 3-3 before India lost in the shootouts, 3-5, to face an early exit. The last two World Cups have displayed India's limitless talent and skills but their ability to win knockout games remains their Achilles heel.

During the recently-held Hockey Annual Awards at the national capital, on March 17 (Friday), WION's Aditya Sahay interacted with India's forward Mandeep Singh who reflected on their heartbreaking loss vs NZ, the road ahead, and shared a message for aspiring athletes.

Overall WC experience

Mandeep stated, "We did play very well in the World Cup. But the game versus New Zealand is the one we lost in the shootouts. We can say it wasn't our day. We were very hopeful as it was our game but we lost. We couldn't believe it ourselves. Yet, we have made a comeback. In the ongoing FIH Pro League, we are on a roll having beaten Australia and Germany, and are at the top. Our focus will now be to win gold in the Asian Games."

How did a depleted Indian side recover post their WC heartbreak?

"It is difficult. You can't take any team lightly. Every game is tough. We were very disheartened (after the loss vs New Zealand). But we have realised that hockey isn't over for us. Winning and losing are part and parcel of the game. In the upcoming event, we have to make sure we don't repeat the same mistakes and march ahead," the 28-year-old further opined.

Indian hockey is flourishing at the junior level as well. In late 2022, the junior men's hockey team triumphed in the Sultan of Johar Cup. Hence, the future is certainly bright and some memorable WC wins are round the corner. In this regard, Mandeep shared a message for the young hockey players.

Message for youngsters?

"Firstly, create a goal for yourself. Whatever your aim or goal is and if you are clear in your mind, you will achieve success. Apart from following the coach, you have to give yourself some extra time as well. Even if it is for half an hour. That creates a lot of difference. And, whatever you do, do it with your 100 % into it," he concluded.

Hockey has once again regained mileage in the country. In the recent past, Indian teams have brought several laurels to the nation and earned accolades for their performances.

Also Read: Hardik Singh, Savita Punia bag Hockey India Balbir Singh Sr. Award for Player of the Year 2022 Overall WC experience Mandeep stated, "We did play very well in the World Cup. Our focus will now be to win gold in the Asian Games." How did a depleted Indian side recover post their WC heartbreak?
