The Israeli military claimed on Monday (Oct 30) that strikes were carried out on military infrastructure inside Syria. They also released footage of the airstrikes.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that it was responding to "launches from Syria towards Israeli territory" earlier on Sunday.

The military said: "A short time ago, an IDF fighter jet attacked the launchers from which the launches were made last night from Syrian territory towards Israeli territory."

It further added that the Israeli jet "struck military infrastructure in Syrian territory".

Israel 'ground forces' conduct another night raid in Gaza, IDF releases aerial footage

Trigger warning: Some readers may find the details of this report disturbing. Discretion is advised.

As Israel braces for a vote on Jordan's resolution at the UN General Assembly seeking a ceasefire in Gaza, the country's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, on Thursday (Oct 26) played out a very disturbing video during his address which allegedly showed Hamas militants attacking a Thai woman with a garden hoe.

Revealing what he said is the "true face of Hamas," the envoy in a post on X social media platform wrote, "This is not Auschwitz - it's Hamas! We are not fighting against humans - we are fighting monsters! Israel will not stop until Hamas is destroyed! This is what I said at the General Assembly podium when I showed footage of Israeli civilians burnt alive by Hamas and of Hamas savages beheading a wounded Thai civilian. His crime? Being alive in Israel."

According to reports, the video was from the onslaught by Hamas that ensued on October 7 in southern Israel, an unprecedented attack on Israel that allegedly involved butchering civilians, beheading babies, setting houses on fire, and abducting many Israelis and foreign nationals, and taking them to Gaza Strip.

UNGA members are expected to vote on a Jordanian resolution on Friday (Oct 27). Reports say that the resolution is anticipated to pass as a majority of the members back Palestinians.

However, UNGA resolutions are non-binding and may have little effect on the ground situation.

The text of the resolution moved by Jordan, representing the Arab countries, is also seeking the release of hostages held captive by Hamas, ensuring the safety of civilians, and "unhindered" humanitarian access for Palestinians stranded in the Gaza Strip.

Palestine can't vote

Palestine, being just a non-member observer at the UN General Assembly and not recognised in the UN Charter, will not be able to cast its vote. Meanwhile, each of the 193 members of UNGA will get the opportunity to vote on Gaza which is being pounded relentlessly by Israeli airstrikes.

Earlier, two UNSC resolutions failed to pass. As the war prolongs and takes a toll on the well-being of Palestinians stuck in war-ravaged Gaza, Russia and China vetoed the United States-led resolution at the Security Council which called for Israel's right to self-defence and "humanitarian pauses".

Meanwhile, the Russia-led resolution that called for a humanitarian ceasefire also failed to garner enough support, winning only four votes while a resolution needs at least nine.

Palestine’s UN ambassador Riyad Mansour in an emotional speech to the UNGA on October 26 appealed members "to vote to stop the killing. Vote for humanitarian aid to reach those whose very survival depends on it. Vote to stop this madness".

His crime? Palestine can't vote Palestine, being just a non-member observer at the UN General Assembly and not recognised in the UN Charter, will not be able to cast its vote. Meanwhile, each of the 193 members of UNGA will get the opportunity to vote on Gaza which is being pounded relentlessly by Israeli airstrikes. Watch | US strikes 2 Syrian facilities after attacks on its troops by Iran-backed groups × Earlier, two UNSC resolutions failed to pass. I may go: Former US president Trump mulls visiting Israel amid war against Hamas

The Gaza hospital attack is being widely condemned by world leaders and human rights activists alike. Joining the voices now is Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Prize winner who condemned the horrific incident that led to the killing of hundreds of Palestinians. As many continue to await the arrival of humanitarian aid in Gaza, the activist demanded Israel to let the assistance flow into the war-ravaged region.

The Nobel Prize winner also directed $300,000 to three charities in order to lend a helping hand to Palestinians who came under the deadly strike.

In a post on X, she wrote, “I’m horrified to see the bombing of al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza and unequivocally condemn it. I urge the Israeli government to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and reiterate the call for a ceasefire. I am directing $300K to three charities helping Palestinian people under attack."

This comes as US President Joe Biden assured that Israel agreed to allow humanitarian assistance to reach Gaza from Egypt. However, it will be affirmed that the aid reached civilians and not the Hamas Islamist group.

It is worth noting that Israel stopped sending food, fuel, and water to Gaza after the turmoil that set off in Israel after the October 7 Hamas attack. There are many negotiating parties who are striving hard to bring some sort of a truce to unlock aid to Gazans.

US walking tight diplomatic rope

The US and other countries are walking a tight diplomatic rope to bring an end to the air strikes and humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In the latest, UK PM Rishi Sunak, during a press conference in Jerusalem, told his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, "I want to share the condolences for the people. We absolutely back Israel to defend itself as per international law, to go after against Hamas."

He added, "We recognised the Palestinian people are victims of Hamas as well." Sunak backed Israel on its decision to let aid enter Gaza. The British PM also said that the UK will increase aid for the war-torn Gaza Strip.

I am directing $300K to three charities helping Palestinian people under attack." However, it will be affirmed that the aid reached civilians and not the Hamas Islamist group.
International singer and songwriter Alicia Keys recently found herself in the midst of controversy when some social media users accused her of supporting Hamas amid the recent unrest in Israel. The acclaimed artist has since addressed the allegations and clarified the intentions behind her post.

In a statement shared via her Instagram story, the "If I Ain't Got You" hitmaker made it unequivocally clear that her Instagram photo was in no way related to the recent events and loss of innocent lives in the Middle East. Keys expressed her profound sorrow over the ongoing situation and affirmed her commitment to peace. She emphasised, "My heart has been breaking.... I pray for and stand for peace."

The controversy began when Alicia Keys posted a photograph of herself wearing a green leather racing jacket with black and white highlights, colours that some believed resembled the black, white, green, and red seen on the Palestinian flag.

In the post's caption, she engaged with her followers, asking, "What would u do if you weren't afraid of anything??? Tell me your truth... I've had my eyes on paragliding."

Although Keys later removed the post, it had already garnered attention from social media users, some of whom speculated about its meaning and intentions. Certain individuals believed that the singer was sending coded messages to indicate her support for Hamas.

The advocacy group StopAntisemitism posted a screenshot of Keys' controversial post on X (formerly Twitter) and questioned her intentions, insinuating a connection to recent violent events in the region. They wrote, "Is this some sick ode to the Hamas terrorists that infiltrated Israel, killed over 1300 people, beheaded babies, raped women, and kidnapped Holocaust survivors @aliciakeys?" before the singer issued her statement to refute the accusations.

Alicia Keys clarifies paragliding post amid accusations of supporting Hamas

My recent chat with an angry resident of Jaffa in southern Tel Aviv made me want to write this piece. I am not going to downplay the human cost and deep-seated anger many Israelis feel in the wake of the October 7 terror attack by Hamas on Israel.

While the emotions of the residents were undeniably raw and understandable, it is also crucial to approach the situation from a more nuanced perspective.

Beyond the sudden outburst of shock, anger, despair, and calls for revenge, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a complex issue with deep historical roots and multiple points of view.

The resident I spoke with told me that "Hamas only wants death".

It is reasonably fair to say so. The European Union and the US have already designated the Palestinian organisation as a terrorist group.

While Hamas has been involved in acts of terrorism, one should not forget that not all Palestinians support their actions.

'No more Gaza' is an unfair war cry in face of a traumatic event

The US intelligence community is believed to have briefed President Joe Biden about the imminent violence between Hamas and Israel in the weeks ahead of the October 7 terrorist attacks, a CNN report has revealed.

One update came on September 28, backed by multiple intelligence inputs that indicated Hamas was planning a massive rocket attack on Israel. The second assessment was produced on October 5, when the country’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) warned of the increasing possibility of violence by Hamas.

On October 6, the day before Hamas’ assault, US officials reportedly circulated inputs that came directly from Israel. All of this heralded a massive Gazan attack on Israel.

It was unclear whether or not the US intelligence assessments were shared with the Israeli administration.

While the intelligence hinted at the possibility of violence, none of the inputs gave details or indicated the sheer scale and brutality of the attack.

Intelligence failure?

Since Israel-Hamas tensions are so frequent and prevalent, it is sometimes an arduous task for intelligence experts to predict or assess the gravity of the situation.

The evaluations were part of a series of stern alerts conveyed to the Biden administration by its own intelligence agencies and allies in the Middle East over the past year, prompting doubts about whether the United States and Israel were adequately prepared for the potential risks.

Israel has launched incessant air strikes at Hamas targets in Gaza after members of the Palestinian militant group stormed Israeli towns in the first week of October in a surprise and unprecedented assault.

The attack by Hamas on Saturday (Oct 7) was launched from the Gaza enclave, killing over 1,000 Israelis, mostly civilians. Hamas militants also took dozens hostage, including from a famous music festival.

The subsequent armed conflict continues to escalate as hundreds of people have died on both sides and the toll is expected to rise further.

However, other concerns have been raised over the way this war is going forward. Experts have called out Israel after a video purportedly showed the alleged use of white phosphorus bombs in densely populated areas.

The matter is contested, but WION here decodes everything you need to know about the white phosphorus bombs.

What are white phosphorus bombs?

White phosphorus is a waxy crystalline solid, which turns dark on exposure to light. This toxic substance comes in white to yellow transparent. White phosphorus has a match-like or garlic-like, acrid odour, however, it is not feasible to depend on odour for its detection.

It is used by the military in the form of various types of ammunition as an incendiary agent because it spontaneously catches fire in the air when it comes into contact with oxygen.

The substance is also used by the militaries across the world as a smoke agent because it produces clouds of irritating white smoke.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, an intergovernmental implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention, has not listed White Phosphorous in any of the three Schedules of Chemical Weapons.

White phosphorus can ignite fast-burning and fast-spreading fires on the ground, and several reports have claimed it is extremely difficult to extinguish once ignited.

How can white phosphorus be disseminated?

White phosphorus munitions can cause severe harm as exposure to them leads to burn injuries and vapour inhalation.

It can be absorbed into the body when inhaled, ingested, or through skin contact. It sticks to many surfaces, including skin and clothing.

It can be released into indoor air as smoke and can contaminate water bodies if contacted, which will impact millions — humans and animals.

A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) mentioned that white phosphorus cannot be used to contaminate food. It added that if white phosphorus is released as smoke, it may not contaminate agricultural products. However, particles of white phosphorus that do not react with air may contaminate agricultural products.
