Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to press on with a powerful operation in Gaza's Rafah even as calls mounted for him to hold off sending troops into the territories' overcrowded city. Netanyahu has insisted Hamas battalions must be eliminated in the city as Egyptian and Qatari mediators in Cairo are hoping to secure a ceasefire that would see more of the roughly 130 hostages still in Gaza released in another swap.

Hamas has now proposed a 135-day truce and hostage deal. This is in response to a US backed- Israel plan that reportedly included a six-week truce. The militant group has proposed a three-stage plan with each stage spanning over 45 days. Under the plan, the remaining hostages will be exchanged for around 1500 Palestinian prisoners. The deal also envisages flow of aid to Gaza, withdrawal of Israeli forces along with reconstruction of the besieged strip.

A war monitor claimed on Monday (Feb 5) that seven fighters from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were killed in an attack on an American base in eastern Syria overnight. SDF accused "Syrian regime-backed mercenaries" of carrying out the attack. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights alleged that seven SDF special forces "commandos" were killed and 18 others wounded in "a drone attack after midnight" on the Al-Omar oil field in Syria's eastern province of Deir el-Zour, which is said to be the largest US-led coalition base in the country. The US-backed SDF stated that "six of our fighters were martyred due to a terrorist attack" with a one-way drone hitting a "training academy in the Al-Omar oil field" around midnight. The death toll was earlier five, it rose to seven in the latest update. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which is a loose alliance of pro-Iran fighters opposed to US support for Israel in Gaza, claimed a drone attack on Sunday "against the US occupation base in the Al-Omar oil field". According to Rami Abdel Rahman, who is the head of the Britain-based Observatory, the strike hit an SDF section inside the base, in "the first attack by pro-Iran groups against American bases after the US strikes on Syria and Iraq" late last week. Netanyahu rejects reports of Gaza truce, rules out freeing 'thousands of terrorists'

<p>United States President Joe Biden said on Tuesday (Jan 30) that he has decided how to respond to the drone attack on US troops in Jordan, which killed three service members. Biden also added that Iran is to blame for supplying weapons to the militant groups.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Biden responded to the reporters as he left the White House on a campaign trip to Florida. He was asked whether or not he had made a decision on his response. He said, "Yes."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US president also asked whether Iran was to blame, and he said, "I do hold them responsible, in the sense that they're supplying the weapons to the people who did it."&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an election year, Biden and his party have been facing growing pressure to punish Iran for the drone strike on a US military facility near the Jordanian-Syrian border on Sunday, with some urging direct strikes on Iran itself.</p>

<h2><strong>Middle East crisis</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>In the past few weeks, tensions have escalated sharply in the Middle East (West Asia) region, especially after the Jordan attack in the already unstable region after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and Israel's devastating response in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Global calls have been made to opt for a diplomatic channel and avoid escalation, with Russia, a close ally of Iran, on Tuesday calling for de-escalation.</p>

<p>"In our view, the overall level of tension is very alarming and, on the contrary, now is the time for steps to de-escalate tensions," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow.</p>

<p>"This is the only thing that can help us prevent further spreading of the conflict, especially the Middle East conflict, and somehow achieve de-confliction and de-escalation," Peskov added.&nbsp;</p>

United States President Joe Biden said on Tuesday (Jan 30) that he has decided how to respond to the drone attack on US troops in Jordan, which killed three service members. Biden also added that Iran is to blame for supplying weapons to the militant groups. Biden responded to the reporters as he left the White House on a campaign trip to Florida. He was asked whether or not he had made a decision on his response. He said, "Yes." The US president also asked whether Iran was to blame, and he said, "I do hold them responsible, in the sense that they're supplying the weapons to the people who did it." Biden also said that the US does not need a wider war in the Middle East. Also read: CCTV footage shows undercover Israeli troops raiding West Bank hospital, killing three Palestinians In an election year, Biden and his party have been facing growing pressure to punish Iran for the drone strike on a US military facility near the Jordanian-Syrian border on Sunday, with some urging direct strikes on Iran itself. However, US media reported that Biden's administration believes hitting Iranian territory could escalate tensions, with strikes on Iranian-backed militias and possibly on Iranian Revolutionary Guard facilities in other countries more likely. Meanwhile, the White House had said on Monday that the US will aim at a "very consequential" response. While talking about links to Tehran, Biden said that the US would have that "discussion" when asked if a direct link to Iran had been established. Gal Meir Eisenkot, son of Israeli war cabinet minister killed in Gaza

<p>Israel claimed that Hamas militants kidnapped around 240 hostages when they launched the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/israel-hamas-war-live-released-hostages-handed-over-to-red-cross-in-gaza-664012">surprise attack on October 7</a>, but in a recent report, Qatar said that at least 40 women and children are not with Hamas, and unaccounted for.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thousands were killed on both sides during the war which started after the October 7 attack, but a four-day true came as a brief respite which was extended for 48 hours. As part of the deal, Israel returned Palestinian detainees from prisons, and Hamas agreed to free some hostages.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A total of 60 Israeli hostages have been freed so far, and the families are hoping that the authorities will free the rest of them. But amidst the truce, the report of missing hostages is concerning. Qatar's PM, a mediator in the negotiations, told The Financial Times on Sunday that Hamas was unable to locate some 40 women and children being held.&nbsp;</p>
