57.9 percent vote 'yes'; Twitter wants Elon Musk to sell 10 percent of his Tesla stock

Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to decide the fate his 10% stock in the electric car company and asked his 62.6 million followers in a poll if he should sell his stocks.

He has said that he would “abide by the results of this poll, whichever way it goes.”

Musk’s sudden announcement comes amid pressure in Washington to increase taxes on billionaires. Some Democrats have been wanting to impose a new tax on America’s wealthiest by taxing unrealized capital gains—a type of gains that is accrued when the price of the stocks they hold goes up, even if they do not sell any shares.

According to reports, Musk’s unrealized capital gains stand at roughly US $300 billion.

Musk's shareholding in Tesla comes to about 170.5 million shares as of June 30 and selling 10 per cent of his stock would amount close to $21 billion based on Friday's closing, according to Reuters calculations.

The so-called “Billionaires Income Tax” would apply solely to 700 taxpayers who have at least $1 billion in assets or $100 million in income for three straight years.

According to the proposal, the proposed tax would raise around “hundreds of billions of dollars.”

America's billionaires have seen their collected wealth surge 70% since the start of the pandemic to over $5 trillion, according to an analysis by the pro-wealth-tax Americans for Tax Fairness and the Institute for Policy Studies Program on Inequality.

That gain from March 18, 2020, is equal in size to Biden's spending plans over 10 years, news agency AP reported.

Elon Musk is willing to spend $6 billion to fight world hunger, but with a plan

The posting of an ancient Chinese poem by Tesla CEO Elon Musk on social media on Tuesday has driven Chinese internet users to engage in a frenzied debate game over his meaning, with many also praising him for his knowledge of the text.

Musk, who is known for his cryptic Twitter posts, wrote in English "Humankind" before posting an abbreviated version of the 'Seven Steps Verse' in Chinese on his official Twitter and Weibo accounts.

The highly allegorical poem describes the relationship between two brothers from a royal family during China's warring Three Kingdoms period that is taught in all of China's primary schools about the importance of getting along.

Discussions about how to interpret Musk's posts trended heavily on Weibo on Tuesday, receiving over 100 million views. Twitter is blocked in mainland China.

Popular interpretations suggested Musk was alluding to two rivalling dog-themed cryptocurrencies, shiba inu and dogecoin, which he had been tweeting about this week. His tweets are known for moving cryptocurrency markets, although cryptocurrency trading is banned within China's borders.

Musk's posting of the Chinese poem on Weibo marked a departure from his typical messages on the platform, where he has 1.9 million followers and frequently praises China for its space programme and its economic growth over the past three decades.

Twitter war between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and World Food Programme (WFP) chief David Beasley does not seem to end. WFP chief has now said that he is ready to meet the billionaire on 'Earth or space' in order to show him how a one-time contribution from Musk may prove to be decisive in alleviating global hunger.

Musk and Beasley have been trading tweets on this issue for past few days. In his latest tweet, Beasley appears to have nudged Musk by saying 'Instead of tweets' they could meet in person and discuss the issue.

"Instead of tweets, allow me to show you. We can meet anywhere—Earth or space—but I suggest in the field where you can see @WFP’s people, processes and yes, technology, at work. I will bring the plan, and open books," Beasley tweeted.

The Twitter feud has been going on since October 31 when Elon Musk, based on a headline in CNN Business tweeted that if USD 6 billion could solve world hunger, he was ready to sell Tesla shares and donate the amount to UN food agency. However, he appeared pointed in his Twitter by asking WFP to explain how USD 6 billion would solve world hunger.

In next two tweets, WFP chief appeared to explain his side by calling the CNN headline 'not accurate'.

"Headline not accurate. $6B will not solve world hunger, but it WILL prevent geopolitical instability, mass migration and save 42 million people on the brink of starvation. An unprecedented crisis and a perfect storm due to Covid/conflict/climate crises," he tweted.

"With your help we can bring hope, build stability and change the future. Let’s talk: It isn’t as complicated as Falcon Heavy, but too much at stake to not at least have a conversation. I can be on the next flight to you. Throw me out if you don’t like what you hear!" he said in the next tweet.

Meet me on Earth or in space: WFP chief fires new tweet at Elon Musk

Elon Musk, the tech entrepreneur extraordinaire, declared on Twitter that he would be prepared to sell some of his Tesla shares to help fight world hunger, but with one condition.

Musk's comment was in reaction to a tweet citing a CNN Business report quoting a UN World Food Programme head suggesting that billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk - the world's two richest men – could help end world hunger by donating a percentage of their wealth.

He went on to say that one-sixth of this amount, or $6 billion, might assist save 42 million people who are starving.

In the year 1999, an American magazine named Barron's published a cover story titled "Amazon.bomb" which predicted that Amazon's stock price would come crashing down and the real winners of the Internet boom would be "firms that sell their own products directly."

Jeff Bezos shares an old article predicting Amazon's failure, Elon Musk replies

With a big wheel, music and an appearance by CEO Elon Musk, Tesla is pulling out all the stops Saturday to win over opponents of the electric carmaker's controversial new "gigafactory" near Berlin.

Construction had begun under an exceptional procedure granted by authorities two years ago, but opposition from locals over environmental concerns has held up final approval for the plant.

Some local residents have planned a counter-protest at the site on the day of the event to underline their opposition to the factory.

Musk will personally drop by at the "Giga Fest", where the company has laid on a big wheel, electronic music and vegetarian food trucks -- an event conceived in the image of Berlin, Europe's party capital.

Thousands are expected to attend, with locals given priority for the guest list announced by Tesla earlier this week.

Devotees of the brand shared their excitement ahead of the day on social media. "Gigafest here we come. Thrilled to see what they have built in my hometown," tweeted one.

The project's opponents are planning another form of welcome. "Let's take to the streets against this environmental devastation pushed by politicians," is the call made by protest organisers.

Environmental concerns

Tesla began construction at the site in Gruenheide in 2019 after receiving preliminary approval under a special procedure.

But local authorities are still in the process of evaluating the environmental impact of the factory, despite construction being all but done.

The special treatment afforded to the company angered some residents, who are concerned about the impact the plant could have on the water supply and biodiversity.

Supported by NGOs, opponents have sent letters, held protests and gone to court to try and stop the project.

"Tesla has to follow the same procedures as other companies," the Green League campaign group said recently.

Last year, work at the Tesla site was temporarily stopped after NGOs requested an injunction to protect the nearby natural habitat of endangered species of lizards and snakes while they were in their winter slumber.

A residents' consultation, part of the approval process, is due to close on October 14.

Until the survey is completed, final approval cannot be given and production at the factory will not be allowed to begin.

Even then, the state environment ministry in Brandenburg, where the plant is located, told AFP "no date has been fixed" for this authorisation.

Despite local resistance, construction has been completed in double-quick time, replacing a swathe of pine forest with an enormous concrete-paved expanse accessed via "Tesla Road".

Economies of scale

About 500,000 cars a year should roll off the line at the factory just outside Berlin, Tesla's first production location in Europe.

On the same 300-hectare plot, Musk also plans to build "the world's biggest battery factory".

The site will equally boast the "world's largest die-casting machine", said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, director of the Center for Automotive Research in Germany.

The custom-built equipment should allow Tesla to "significantly reduce production costs", Dudenhoeffer said.

In the event that the factory is not approved, the carmaker will be compelled to dismantle the entire works at its own cost.

Such a turn of events is, however, "unlikely", said Dudenhoeffer, since the project has considerable "political support".

"Every political party is in favour," the car expert explained, while noting that changes to the factory facade could be requested by authorities, delaying the beginning of production further.

First planned for July 2021, the start has already been pushed back to the end of this year as a result of the company's administrative troubles.

Also read | China-made electric vehicles should not be sold in India: Modi govt to Elon Musk Thousands are expected to attend, with locals given priority for the guest list announced by Tesla earlier this week. Environmental concerns Tesla began construction at the site in Gruenheide in 2019 after receiving preliminary approval under a special procedure. Economies of scale About 500,000 cars a year should roll off the line at the factory just outside Berlin, Tesla's first production location in Europe. Tesla holds 'Giga Fest' at disputed German factory

Union minister Nitin Gadkari claimed on Friday that Tesla has been told not to sell vehicles made in China in India and to instead make them here.

He also encouraged the Elon Musk-led firm to export automobiles made in India.

Gadkari went on to say that Tata Motors' electric automobiles are no less good than Tesla's electric cars.

Tesla has requested that import taxes on electric cars (EVs) be reduced in India.

"I have told Tesla that you don't sell electric cars in India that your company has manufactured in China. You should make electric cars in India, and also export cars from India, " he said.

"Whatever support you (Tesla) want, will be provided by our government," Gadkari added.

Tesla has urged the government to standardise EV pricing and remove the social welfare surcharge placed on them, claiming that it would help the country's EV ecosystem without jeopardising local interests.

Gadkari stated that he was in discussions with Tesla executives over the company's desire for tax breaks.

Last month, the Union minister demanded that Tesla begin manufacturing in India before any tax breaks could be considered.

The Indian government imposes a 100% import tariff on vehicles, whereas fully built units (CBUs) are subject to a customs duty ranging from 60% to 100%, depending on engine size and cost, insurance, and freight (CIF) value less or greater than $40,000.

The taxes are intended to safeguard domestic producers, and despite Musk's open appeal, the government's stance has remained unaltered thus far.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk's one of the latest tweets has left the Indian cricket fans confused as he wrote "Maxwell was incredible" just moments after Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore registered a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League 2021 on Wednesday (September 29). During the match, Maxwell hit his second successive half-century to fire RCB to a convincing win. The Australian batting all-rounder made an unbeaten 50 off 30 deliveries as Bangalore chased down their victory target of 150 in 17.1 overs. ALSO READ | UK's fuel crisis hits Cristiano Ronaldo! But many Indian cricket fans assumed that Elon Musk has appreciated the cricketer, and rightly so as the IPL fever is high with the second leg of the 14th edition of cash-rich league underway in UAE. One of the Twitter users commented, "Yes sir. We all just saw the RCB match too." "So the richest person also looks interested In cricket!" another chimed in. One user even went on to say, "AB is better." ALSO READ | Ashwin reacts sharply after rumours of him complaining against Virat Kohli to the BCCI go viral Who was James Clerk Maxwell? So, it is clear that Tesla owner Elon Musk didn't compliment the cricketer, his tweet was actually for James Clerk Maxwell, who was a Scottish mathematician and scientist responsible for the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation describing electricity, magnetism and light as different manifestations of the same phenomenon for the first time. According to Space.com, the scientist's insights took the form of 20 interconnected equations, which, a few years later, were reduced to four equations of electromagnetism that are still taught to scientists and engineers today. His revolution followed Isaac Newton's first unification of physics, in which Earth's gravity was joined with the gravity of the heavens under a single law, and Maxwell's equations became known as the second great unification in physics. Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, has insulted his wealthy competitor Jeff Bezos yet again on Twitter for initiating lawsuits against his company.

It's the latest in a long line of insults between the two billionaires. Both Bezos and Musk are competing for a contract with Nasa to build a moon lander.

Despite the fact that Musk's SpaceX has already secured the lucrative Nasa contract, Bezos Blue Origin has launched a lawsuit alleging that Nasa's bidding process was flawed.

As a result, Bezos Blue Origin filed a lawsuit against Nasa after losing a government contract to send astronauts to the Moon.

This action by Bezos' company has impeded SpaceX's own project progress.

According to CNBC, Amazon requested that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reject SpaceX's latest update to its Starlink satellite network.

"While Amazon has waited 15 months to explain how its system works, it has lodged objections to SpaceX on average about 16 days this year," SpaceX said in a letter addressed to Marlene Dotch, Secretary of the FCC.

Russia's space agency Roscosmos has postponed its first mission to the moon's surface in decades as a result of "problems" encountered during tests of the Luna-25 spacecraft.

Russia had announced last week that the mission, originally scheduled for October 1, from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Far East had been moved to May 2022.

The Luna-25 mission to the Moon's south pole aims to probe ice deposits there. It is set to be Russia's first mission to the moon's surface in 45 years and the first in its post-Soviet history.

The chief engineer of Russia's state NPO Lavochkin design bureau explained the delay Tuesday saying that "more time" was needed to complete successful trials.

"We have encountered certain problems during testing," Alexander Shirshakov told the Interfax news agency.

"A safe landing system is of crucial importance and we are working on Luna-25's soft landing system," Shirshakov said.

The race back to the moon is in full swing after China in December 2020 became the first country to return samples from the moon since the Soviet Luna-24 mission in 1976.

US space agency NASA also has pledged to land the next man and the first woman on the moon in 2024 as part of its Artemis programme.

Meanwhile, Russia and China signed a memorandum of understanding to set up an international lunar research station.

Russia's space programme inherited from the Soviet Union has in recent years suffered from problems like corruption scandals and budget cuts.

Its space industry took a blow in 2020 when it lost its monopoly over manned flights to the ISS after the successful mission of Space X, the company belonging to US billionaire Elon Musk.

Roscosmos has however announced a number of ventures including a mission to Venus and the creation of a rocket capable of making round trips to space.

Russia has also indicated that it plans to start building its own space station with the aim of launching it into orbit by 2030 if President Vladimir Putin gives the go-ahead.

The project would mark a new chapter for Russian space exploration and an end to more than two decades of close cooperation with the United States aboard the ageing International Space Station (ISS).

Speaking at Tesla's AI Day event, the billionaire entrepreneur said the robot, which stands around five foot eight inches tall, would be able to handle jobs from attaching bolts to cars with a wrench, or picking up groceries at stores.

The robot would have "profound implications for the economy," Musk said, addressing a labour shortage. He said it was important to make the machine not "super-expensive."

He said Tesla will also introduce new hardware for its self-driving computer for its Cybertruck electric pick-up truck in "about a year or so."

A few years ago, Musk asked Tesla engineers "to design a superfast training computer and that's how we started Project Dojo," Tesla director Ganesh Venkataramanan said at the AI Day event.

Pushing the boundaries

Musk has a history of skirmishing with regulators, but the controversies have had little effect on Tesla's ascendance over the last year and a half as the company has hit key production targets.

His achievement in building Tesla from a fledgling startup into a pacesetter in the electric car market stands out as a success as other electric auto startups like Lordstown Motors and Nikola have stumbled.

At the same time, Musk has sparked blowback from critics as he pushed or flouted the rules on everything from his use of social media to discuss Tesla's operations to his response to Covid-19 health protocols required by local authorities near the California plant.

Tesla Inc said on Friday, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk's total compensation for 2020 was nil, compared to $23,760 in 2019.

The electric-car maker also said in a regulatory filing that finance chief Zachary Kirkhorn's total compensation was $46.6 million, versus the $21.2 million he got in 2019.

The pay package of Musk, who is also a major shareholder and CEO of rocket maker SpaceX, requires Tesla's market capitalisation and financial growth to hit a series of rising targets.

As of April, Musk had qualified for Tesla options in his 2018 pay package that are now worth over $30 billion.

Tesla added "Technoking of Tesla" to Musk's list of official titles in a regulatory filing in March that also named Kirkhorn "Master of Coin."

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Musk will be also subject of a biography by Walter Isaacson, the US author, who penned a best-selling tome on Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Elon Musk has criticised Jeff Bezos, a wealthy competitor, for allegedly focusing on government lobbying rather than rocket development.

In recent years, the two have exchanged places as the world's wealthiest people, leveraging their huge fortunes to support their private space enterprises.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Cook had said: "I've never spoken to Elon, although I have great admiration and respect for the company he's built".

Cook replied after Musk in December last year tweeted that he offered Cook to sell his electric car company at one-tenth of its value during the struggling period in 2017 but the Apple CEO refused to meet him.

Musk denies attempting to replace Cook as Apple CEO, says he tried to sell Tesla

A US agency on Friday rejected a protest by Blue Origin and defense contractor Dynetics Inc over NASA`s decision to pick a single lunar lander provider.

The companies challenged the $2.9 billion award to SpaceX for the lander, arguing NASA was required to make multiple awards.

The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) said it "denied the protest arguments that NASA acted improperly in making a single award to SpaceX."

Blue Origin, the rocket company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, did not immediately comment. It had contended NASA gave SpaceX an unfair advantage by letting it revise its pricing. Dynetics, a unit of Leidos Holdings, also did not immediately comment.

On Monday, Bezos offered to cover up to $2 billion in NASA costs if the US space agency awarded Blue Origin a contract to make a spacecraft designed to land astronauts back on the moon.

In April, NASA awarded rival billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk`s SpaceX a deal to build a spacecraft to bring astronauts to the lunar surface as early as 2024.

In a letter to NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, Bezos said Blue Origin would waive payments up to $2 billion, and pay for an orbital mission to vet its technology. In exchange, Blue Origin would accept a firm, fixed-priced contract, and cover any system development cost overruns.

"Without competition, NASA`s short-term and long-term lunar ambitions will be delayed, will ultimately cost more, and won`t serve the national interest," Bezos added.

Before choosing SpaceX, NASA sought proposals for a spacecraft that would carry astronauts to the lunar surface under its Artemis program to return humans to the moon for the first time since 1972.

Bezos` offer came six days after he flew alongside three crewmates to the edge of space aboard Blue Origin`s rocket-and-capsule New Shepard.
