Did Trump compare US Iran airstrikes to Hiroshima, Nagasaki? US president says it's 'essentially the same thing'

US President Donald Trump, during a press conference on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in The Hague on Wednesday (Jun 25), hailed the ceasefire in the Israel-Iran war as a "tremendous victory for everyone, including Iran". Amid uncertainty around the ceasefire, Trump insisted that it was "going very well" and said that thanks to the US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites, Tehran "won't be building bombs for a long time". Ridiculing reports that suggest that the US strikes, contrary to what Trump says, did not "obliterate" the Iranian nuclear programme, the US president insisted that a "total obliteration" happened and said that the Iranian nuclear programme has been set back "decades".
Trump takes credit for setting back Iran's nuclear programme
Doubling down on his "total obliteration" claims, Trump claimed that Tehran's nuclear programme has been set back by "decades". "They're not going to be building bombs for a long time," he added. The SU President also stated that progress was being made on the war in Gaza. He said he believed that "great progress" was being made to bring an end to the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, thanks to the US strikes. Suggesting that the bombing could have a positive impact on the Middle East, he said, “I think great progress is being made on Gaza, I think because of this attack that we made.”
Trump slams the media
Slamming media publications that reported on the leaked US intel on the assessment of damage at the nuclear sites, Trump called out reporters from certain media houses, including CNN and The New York Times, insisting that their publications were "going down".

A leaked intel report on the early assessment of the damage wrought by US bombing on three Iranian nuclear strikes has concluded that the strike has only set Tehran's nuclear programme back by a few months. As per reports, the damage was further lessened by the fact that Iran moved enriched uranium out of the sites before the US strikes. Citing people in the know, reports suggest that Iran's enriched uranium stockpiles were moved before US President Donald Trump ordered strikes that could destroy them. Trump, on his part, has doubled down on his "obliterated" Iran's nuclear sites claim and has slammed news websites that published the US leaked intel.
Iran moved nuclear stockpiles
Citing two people familiar with the classified US assessment, CNN reported that Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium was not destroyed and that its centrifuges were largely "intact." US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised both Israel and Iran for breaching a ceasefire he claimed to have brokered, singling out Israel for striking targets after the truce deadline had passed. Trump: ‘I’m not happy’ with Israel’s actions Speaking before departing for the NATO summit in The Hague on Tuesday (24 June), Trump told reporters he was “not happy that Israel is going now” and accused the country of firing “one missile… after the time limit.” “I gotta get Israel to calm down now,” Trump said as he left the White House, Reuters reports. “Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs, the likes of which I’ve never seen before, the biggest load that we’ve seen," he added. “We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing,” Trump told reporters/ Also read: Was Iran's missile attack on US bases in Qatar just for show? Trump also posted a warning to Israel on his Truth Social platform, writing in capital letters, “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES” This message came just hours after both Israel and Iran reportedly accepted a US-proposed ceasefire to halt their 12-day conflict. Ceasefire brokered after ‘simultaneous’ calls for peace Announcing the agreement on Truth Social, Trump claimed both nations had reached out to him at the same time to ask for peace. “Israel & Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, ‘PEACE!’” he wrote. “The World, and the Middle East, are the real WINNERS! Both Nations will see tremendous LOVE, PEACE, AND PROSPERITY in their futures.” He also said that Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been “destroyed” and would “never rebuild”. 'DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS': Trump 'unhappy' with Israel for attacking Iran; says both nations 'violated ceasefire'

“THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT,” US President Donald Trump wrote on Tuesday (June 24), adding, “PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!” This comes after the US president announced a US-brokered ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel hours after Iran struck a US air base in Qatar. While Iran's attack seemed a big move, it turned out to be a calculated and choreographed move, ultimately meant for the de-escalation of the conflict. The missile launch targeting US forces in Qatar may have made headlines, but US officials suggest it was more symbolic than strategic. 'Trump, the gambler…': Iran threatens US after Trump’s ‘bullseye’ strike on nuclear sites; says 'we will end' this war

Amid fears of Iran closing down the Strait of Hormuz and severely impacting oil supplies, US President Donald Trump issued a warning to global oil producers and urged them to resist any move that could increase costs. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important oil routes in the world, and about one-fifth of the global oil supply passes through it daily. “EVERYONE, KEEP OIL PRICES DOWN. I’M WATCHING! YOU’RE PLAYING RIGHT INTO THE HANDS OF THE ENEMY. DON’T DO IT!” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Monday morning in all caps and using exclamation marks, as he mostly does.

Trump also issued an appeal to increase America’s domestic oil and gas supply, “To The Department of Energy: DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!! And I mean NOW!!!”

The Iranian lawmakers had threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key commercial shipping channel for the world’s oil supply, in retaliation for the US strikes. Any rise in oil prices would lead to higher inflation for American consumers that may become a big political problem for Trump, who won his second stint in the White House on promises to bring down prices. It would also negatively impact his efforts to boost the US economy by increasing business costs that would in turn deter investment and job growth. So far, oil prices have been subdued after jumping 4 per cent after trading began on Sunday night but pared back soon.On Monday morning, the price of a barrel of US oil was marginally up by 0.4 per cent at $74.16 after briefly dipping, while Brent crude, the international standard, edged up by 0.2 per cent to $77.17 per barrel. Both are still higher than before strikes began on Iran over a week ago. The subdued market reaction shows investors believe Iran is unlikely to block the Strait of Hormuz, as it is itself a major oil producer and would suffer from a closure. Analysts also suspect if Iran would close the waterway, since it itself uses it to move its own crude, mostly to China, and needs the revenue. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that any attempt by Iran to block the strait would be “economic suicide” and would draw a response from Washington.

'Take away power of this regime': Trump 'still interested' in Iran diplomacy but asks why Iranians don’t overthrow 'violent' regime

As the United States deploys its most advanced B-2 Spirit stealth bombers in support of Israel amid growing tensions with Iran, few realise that this cutting-edge aircraft owes part of its existence to the Third Reich’s secret war files. The sleek flying wing design of the B-2, capable of evading radar and penetrating deep into enemy airspace, was inspired by a top-secret Nazi project known as the Horten Ho 229, a revolutionary jet developed in the final years of Adolf Hitler’s Germany. This curious connection between Nazi science and modern American airpower was made possible through Operation Paperclip, a covert post-war US programme that recruited hundreds of German scientists and engineers. Their expertise, once devoted to Hitler’s war machine, soon powered America’s own military ambitions from space travel to stealth technology. During the Second World War, the Horten brothers, Reimar and Walter, were pioneers of aviation design, working under the Luftwaffe’s command. Their masterpiece was the Ho 229, the world’s first jet-powered flying wing, a radical aircraft without tail or fuselage. Its shape, designed for aerodynamic efficiency, had the added effect of reducing its visibility to radar, a principle we now call “stealth”. The Ho 229 never flew in combat, as the war ended before the aircraft could be fully developed. This curious connection between Nazi science and modern American airpower was made possible through Operation Paperclip, a covert post-war US programme that recruited hundreds of German scientists and engineers.

However, in April 1945, American forces overran the German base where the prototype was stored. Recognising its potential, the Allies seized not only the airframe but also an entire trove of scientific documents — blueprints, notes, and aerodynamic data. These materials became part of the haul brought to the United States under Operation Paperclip. B-2 Bomber helped Israel, but its origins lie in Hitler’s secret Nazi war files

When President Donald Trump abruptly left the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, a full day ahead of schedule, the official explanation was swift and stern: the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran required his immediate presence in Washington. But among diplomats and intelligence officials, a more unsettling theory quickly began to spread— one that linked Trump’s exit not just to the Middle East, but to threats much closer to home. Specifically, there were reports that Iran had activated or threatened to activate sleeper cells within the United States. Could this be the real reason behind the sudden leaving of the American president from the G7 stage? According to senior intelligence sources, chatter picked up in the days leading up to the summit suggested that Tehran, reeling from the devastation inflicted was preparing asymmetric retaliation. One threat loomed particularly large: attacks on American targets through covert operatives embedded in the West. The CIA reportedly flagged multiple signals indicating potential “active positioning” of these sleeper units. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron, in a pointed remark to the press, claimed Trump was leaving “to play a role in de-escalation” between Israel and Iran, hinting at US backchannel talks. But Trump fired back while still in the air, using Truth Social to accuse Macron of being “publicity-seeking” and “getting it wrong.” He added ominously: “Much bigger than that. Stay tuned.” Those five words — “much bigger than that” — have since become the focus of intense speculation. Was Trump referring to the evolving war in the Middle East? After US B-2 stealth bombers hit Iran’s key nuclear sites, Tehran has vowed retaliation

The United States on Saturday (Jun 21) officially entered the war in the Middle East as it bombed three nuclear sites inside Iran. Taking to his Truth Social profile, US President Donald Trump announced the strikes on Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan nuclear sites. He said that a "full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow". As per reports, this dramatic escalation of the Israel-Iran war was done by Trump without authorisation from the US Congress and the Pentagon. But did he have the authority to do so? Or did Trump overreach his authority as the POTUS? The US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities—ordered by President Donald Trump—have ignited a constitutional firestorm in Washington. The operation, called as 'Midnight Hammer', was executed with surgical precision but has left behind a trail of political and legal fallout. While some Republicans lauded the move as a bold show of strength, many Democrats—and even a few conservatives—are sounding the alarm, calling the strikes “unconstitutional,” “unauthorised,” and potentially “impeachable.” As questions mount over the legality of Trump’s actions, so do concerns over their long-term consequences. Did Trump overstep his constitutional bounds? Was Congress bypassed? And what precedent does this set for future presidents? Here’s a deep dive into the legality, authority, and political reverberations of Trump’s latest move against Iran—and what it means for American democracy and global stability.
Did Trump overstep his authority?
At the heart of the controversy lies a foundational question: who in the US government has the power to declare war? The US Constitution grants Congress the sole authority to declare war (Article I), while the President, as Commander-in-Chief (Article II), can direct military operations. This delicate balance has often been tested—and Trump’s recent Iran strike has pushed it to the brink. As per the US Constitution, the President of the United States, be it Trump or another, must go to Congress before declaring war on any nation. As per Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 of the US Constitution, “[The Congress shall have Power …] To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water…” However, it must be noted that the US Congress has not declared war in over 80 years – since World War II. Yet, the US has been part of many wars, including the Afghanistan War, officially known as Operation Enduring Freedom, which happens to be the longest war in US history (from 2001 to 2021). Progressive Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Ro Khanna, have accused Trump of violating both the War Powers Resolution and the Constitution by failing to obtain Congressional approval before launching the strikes. “We need to vote on a War Powers Resolution to prevent America from being dragged into another endless war,” Khanna said. Ocasio-Cortez went further, calling the move “grounds for impeachment.” Even some Republicans expressed concern. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), a known constitutional conservative, declared bluntly: “This is not Constitutional.” Trump’s defenders argue that the President acted within his authority to protect national security. The White House later said it had made “bipartisan courtesy calls” before the operation, but it’s clear no formal consultation or approval from Congress took place before the missiles launched.
Presidential authority & historical precedents
Presidents have long taken military action without prior Congressional approval—often citing urgent threats or previous authorisations. From Clinton’s airstrikes in Kosovo to Obama’s intervention in Libya and Trump’s own 2020 strike on Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, there is precedent for limited military actions conducted under executive authority. Trump’s supporters, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, argue that “the imminent danger outweighed the time it would take for Congress to act.” Others point out that the President’s role as Commander-in-Chief does allow for defensive measures without a declaration of war. But critics counter that the latest strike was not reactive or time-sensitive in the way previous emergency actions have been. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), a long-time advocate for reining in presidential war powers, labeled the operation “horrible judgment” and vowed to push for a War Powers Resolution to curtail further hostilities. The broader concern is the erosion of Congressional oversight. If presidents continue acting unilaterally, critics warn, the legislative branch may become a mere spectator in matters of war and peace.
Republicans rally, Democrats rebuke
Among Republicans, the response has largely been supportive. Sen. Lindsey Graham called the strike “the right call,” while Rep. Mike Lawler praised it for neutralising the nuclear threat without declaring war. Former Trump officials and conservative think tanks framed the move as necessary to prevent a nuclear Iran. However, the party isn’t monolithic. Isolationist voices like Rep. Massie questioned not just the constitutionality but the strategic wisdom of escalating conflict in the Middle East—especially when Trump's base had long opposed “forever wars.” Meanwhile, Democrats, particularly progressives, have taken a sharply critical stance. Rep. Sean Casten (IL) and Sen. Bernie Sanders both labeled the action “grossly unconstitutional.” Casten even called it “an unambiguous impeachable offense.” DNC Chair Ken Martin added, “Americans overwhelmingly do not want to go to war. This is reckless.” Interestingly, not all Democrats toed the same line. Sen. John Fetterman, known for his centrist pragmatism, said he supported the strike because “Iran cannot be allowed to have nuclear capabilities.” This shows how concerns over Iran’s ambitions cross party lines, even if agreement on Trump’s method is lacking.
Global and domestic consequences
The most immediate concern is regional escalation. Iran has vowed to retaliate, calling the strikes “criminal” and warning of “everlasting consequences.” The attack could reignite hostilities across the Middle East, where US forces remain vulnerable, and tensions with Iran-backed militias are already high. Observers fear that a tit-for-tat spiral could destabilise the entire region—from the Strait of Hormuz to the Golan Heights. With Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria already embroiled in conflict, the addition of a direct US-Iran confrontation could prove catastrophic.
Diplomatic fallout
The strikes all but obliterate hopes of a diplomatic thaw with Iran. Trust, already frayed since Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal, is now likely beyond repair. Any backchannel or formal negotiations around nuclear containment are off the table for the foreseeable future. Domestically, the strikes could boomerang. Public opinion has shifted against military adventurism, and any US casualties or drawn-out confrontation could sour voters. Already, Congressional Democrats are preparing legal challenges and legislative remedies. Sen. Kaine and Rep. Khanna have introduced measures to curtail Trump’s war-making powers, setting the stage for a renewed debate on the War Powers Resolution. Most crucially, the strikes may set a precedent. If Congress fails to push back, future presidents—regardless of party—may feel emboldened to bypass legislative oversight in matters of war.
A defining moment
Trump’s decision to strike Iran has reawakened a fundamental constitutional question: where does presidential authority end, and Congressional oversight begin? This moment may prove pivotal—not just for Trump, but for American democracy itself. The legal and political battles playing out in Washington will shape how war powers are exercised, contested, and understood for years to come. Whether Trump’s actions are ultimately vindicated or condemned, they have already triggered a reckoning—one that will define the limits of presidential power in an era of high-stakes global conflict.

Presidential authority & historical precedents Presidents have long taken military action without prior Congressional approval—often citing urgent threats or previous authorisations. Republicans rally, Democrats rebuke Among Republicans, the response has largely been supportive. Global and domestic consequences The most immediate concern is regional escalation. Diplomatic fallout The strikes all but obliterate hopes of a diplomatic thaw with Iran. A defining moment Trump’s decision to strike Iran has reawakened a fundamental constitutional question: where does presidential authority end, and Congressional oversight begin? This moment may prove pivotal—not just for Trump, but for American democracy itself. The legal and political battles playing out in Washington will shape how war powers are exercised, contested, and understood for years to come. Whether Trump’s actions are ultimately vindicated or condemned, they have already triggered a reckoning—one that will define the limits of presidential power in an era of high-stakes global conflict.

US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday (June 22) to slam Republican Congressman Thomas Massie after the latter criticised recent American military strikes on Iran. The president posted a lengthy post, calling Massie “weak” and a “pathetic loser”. This comes after Massie took to X (formerly Twitter) to express concern about the constitutionality of the strikes. He wrote, “This is not our war. But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our constitution.”In a strong defence of the US action, Trump wrote, “Iran has killed and maimed thousands of Americans, and even took over the American Embassy in Tehran under the Carter Administration. We had a spectacular military success yesterday, taking the ‘bomb’ right out of their hands (and they would use it if they could!) but, as usual… this ‘lightweight’ Congressman is against what was so brilliantly achieved last night in Iran.”Also read: Did Iran anticipate US strike?
