Morning news brief: Donald Trump alleges fraud in US elections results, coronavirus and more

President Donald Trump promised early Wednesday morning to ask the Supreme Court to intervene in the election. “We’ll be going to the U.S. Supreme Court,” he said. “We want all voting to stop.”

The first statement was premature. The second did not make sense.

The Supreme Court decides actual disputes, not abstract propositions, and then only after lower courts have made their own rulings. While there have been countless election cases filed around the nation, it is not clear which of them might reach the court in the coming days.

But one candidate is already on the court’s docket. Last month, the court refused to put a case from Pennsylvania on a fast track, but three justices indicated that the court might return to it later if need be.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Trump campaign asked the Supreme Court for permission to participate in the case alongside Republican state lawmakers and the Republican Party of Pennsylvania. The court has not said whether it would hear the case or when it might decide whether to grant review.

As far as voting is concerned, it stopped on Election Day. But some states allow votes cast by mail on or before Election Day to be counted if they are received up to several days afterward. In Pennsylvania, for instance, the state Supreme Court extended the deadline for receiving ballots from Election Day to three days later.

Should the vote in Pennsylvania have the potential to determine the outcome in the Electoral College and should those late-arriving ballots have the potential to swing the state — two big ifs — the U.S. Supreme Court might well intercede.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ordered a three-day extension for ballots clearly mailed on or before Election Day and for those with missing or illegible postmarks “unless a preponderance of the evidence demonstrates that it was mailed after Election Day.”

Late last month, on Oct. 28, the justices refused a plea from Republicans in the state to fast-track a decision on whether the Pennsylvania Supreme Court had acted lawfully.

The court’s refusal to move more quickly came a little more than a week after it deadlocked, 4-4, on an emergency application in the case Oct. 19.

Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh said they would have granted a stay blocking the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision. On the other side were Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s three-member liberal wing: Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who joined the court Oct. 27, did not take part in the decision not to fast-track the case. A court spokesperson said Barrett had not participated “because of the need for a prompt resolution” and “because she has not had time to fully review the parties’ filings.”

The U.S. Supreme Court has not hesitated to block orders from federal judges that sought to alter state rules for conducting elections. Rulings from state courts present more difficult questions because the Supreme Court generally defers to them in cases concerning interpretations of state law, while the Constitution empowers state legislatures to set the times, places and manner of congressional elections.

In a statement issued when the court refused to speed the Pennsylvania case, Alito, joined by Thomas and Gorsuch, criticized his court’s treatment of the matter, which he said had “needlessly created conditions that could lead to serious postelection problems.”

“The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania has issued a decree that squarely alters an important statutory provision enacted by the Pennsylvania Legislature pursuant to its authority under the Constitution of the United States to make rules governing the conduct of elections for federal office,” he wrote, adding that he regretted that the election would be “conducted under a cloud.”

“It would be highly desirable to issue a ruling on the constitutionality of the state Supreme Court’s decision before the election,” Alito wrote. “That question has national importance, and there is a strong likelihood that the state Supreme Court decision violates the federal Constitution.”

But there was not enough time, he wrote. Still, Alito left little doubt about where he stood on the question in the case.

“The provisions of the federal Constitution conferring on state legislatures, not state courts, the authority to make rules governing federal elections would be meaningless,” he wrote, “if a state court could override the rules adopted by the legislature simply by claiming that a state constitutional provision gave the courts the authority to make whatever rules it thought appropriate for the conduct of a fair election.”

Pennsylvania officials have instructed county election officials to segregate ballots arriving after 8 p.m. on Election Day through 5 p.m. three days later. That would as a practical matter allow a ruling from the Supreme Court to determine whether they were ultimately counted.

Alito’s statement in the Pennsylvania case echoed an earlier concurring opinion by Kavanaugh in a voting case from Wisconsin. Kavanaugh also said that state legislatures, rather than state courts, have the last word in setting state election procedures.

Taken together, the Oct. 17 deadlock and statements from four justices suggest that Barrett could cast the decisive vote if the Pennsylvania dispute holds the key to the election.

Morning news brief: US election 2020 result updates and more

Voting for US Presidential Elections is going on and everyone is eager to know the results. Millions of Americans have voted already. However, the election day has its own aura and excitement. Although we are eager to know the results, there is still time for that. The voting in various states closes at different time and different states have different rules as to the permissible time limit for postal votes to be accepted.

All of this can get very chaotic, so we are bringing you a timeline of what will happen next as per Indian Standard Time

<h2>November 4</h2>

3.30 am IST:&nbsp;Edison Research will release preliminary findings from its exit polls, which are based on in-person interviews with voters on Election Day, in-person interviews at early voting centers before Nov. 3, and telephone interviews with people who voted by mail.

The initial data will look at national and state voter sentiment and motivations, but not detailed percentage estimates. Results from ballot questions in individual states will be released after voting ends in the state.

Edison will refine and update its national and state exit poll results through the night, gathering more voter responses and adjusting the weightings to reflect turnout.

4:30-5:30 IST: Some polling stations begin to close in the Republican strongholds of Indiana and Kentucky, the first in the country to close.

&nbsp;

5:30 am IST: Voting ends in Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Virginia and Vermont.
Some polling stations begin to close in Florida, but many remain open until 8 p.m. (local time)

The initial results from Florida could favor Biden due to the high volume of early ballots that the state began to scan more than three weeks ago; opinion polls suggest more Democrats voted early, whereas more Republicans waited until Election Day. If there is a "blue mirage," it will fade as more in-person ballots from Tuesday are tallied.

6:00 am: Polls close in North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia.

Like Florida, the initial results from North Carolina and Ohio could favor Biden because the states began to scan early ballots weeks before Election Day. A truer picture of the vote will emerge as more ballots are tabulated.

North Carolina counts ballots that arrive as late as Nov. 12 if they are postmarked by Nov. 3. Ohio accepts ballots 10 days after the election if they are postmarked by Nov. 2.

6:30 am IST: Voting ends in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Washington D.C.

Pennsylvania does not begin to process early votes until Election Day and the state will accept mail-in ballots up to three days after the election if they are postmarked by Nov. 3. As a result, the initial vote counts from Pennsylvania may show a "red mirage" favoring Trump until the absentee ballots are counted, experts say.

7 am IST: Reuters expects to publish updated national exit poll results from Edison Research, with percentage estimates of support for Biden vs Trump.
Polling stations close in Arkansas.

7:30 am IST: Voting ends in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Like Pennsylvania, the early results from Michigan and Wisconsin are expected to favor Trump because ballots cannot be counted before Election Day. (Michigan does allow some ballots to be opened, but they cannot be counted.)

Arizona allows ballots to be scanned 14 days before the election.

8:30 AM IST: Polls close in Iowa, Montana, Nevada and Utah.

Iowa allows ballot envelopes to be opened on the Saturday before the election and tabulating to begin on Monday. Ballots postmarked by Nov. 2 can arrive as late as the Monday after the election.

Nevada allows ballot scanning to begin 14 days before the election, and accepts ballots up to seven days after the election if they are postmarked by Nov. 3.

9:30 am IST: Voting ends in California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

10:30 am IST: Polls close in Hawaii.

11:30 am IST: Voting ends in Alaska.

This was about closure of polls. Now let's see what is on cards in coming days. IST is ahead of timezones in the US by roughly 10-12 hours. The exact timing and day of the events in India described ahead will vary as per the time they are held in the US.

<h2>December 8</h2>

States have until this date, known as the "safe harbor" deadline under federal law, to resolve any disputes over their vote totals and certify the winner. If a state fails to finalize its vote count by then, Congress is no longer required to accept its results under the Electoral College system.

<h2>December 14</h2>

Members of the Electoral College cast their ballots for president. Under the U.S. system, the winner of each state`s popular vote earns that state`s electoral votes, which are apportioned by population. The candidate who receives a majority of the 538 electoral votes available, or 270, wins the presidency.

<h2>January 6, 2021</h2>

Congress meets at 1 p.m. in Washington to count the electoral votes and declare a winner.

<h2>January 20, 2021</h2>

Inauguration Day. The winner and his running mate are sworn in as president and vice president at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

US Election 2020: A timeline of what's next according to Indian Standard Time

In the final day of a campaign unlike any other, President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a> and his Democratic challenger <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/joe-biden">Joe Biden</a>&nbsp;spent Monday swarming the swing states that will decide the result of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/us-election">US election</a> 2020.

Meanwhile, over 95 million Americans had cast their votes in the 2020 presidential election by&nbsp;Monday, according to a tally by the US&nbsp;Elections Project at the University of Florida, a harbinger of what is expected to be the highest turnout of modern times.

The record-breaking number is about 69&nbsp;per cent of the 2016 total turnout in which Donald Trump contested against Hillary Clinton.

The new turnout shows the new interest of the Americans in the leadership of the country. it is also being understood as a cry for help by the Americans who are rushing to elect their choice of candidate to make sure their demands and ideologies are met.

Experts are predicting that the total voter count can surpass 138 million with the&nbsp;2016 elections as a comparison model,&nbsp;a total of 47 million voters had cast their ballot four days before the elections in 2016.

A sharp increase in mail-in and early in-person voting was largely prompted by the coronavirus&nbsp;pandemic, which has killed more than 230,000 people in the United States and continues unabated in many US&nbsp;states.

President Donald Trump, his administration criticized for its handling of the COVID-19 outbreak, trails Democratic challenger Joe Biden in national opinion polls. A Reuters/Ipsos poll taken on October 27-29 shows Biden ahead, 51&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;to 43 per cent.

But the race is still a toss-up in battleground states that decide the&nbsp;election&nbsp;through the Electoral College, including Arizona, Florida, and North Carolina.

A large number of Trump's Republican supporters are expected to turn up in person to vote on&nbsp;Election&nbsp;Day after Trump sowed distrust, without evidence, of mail-in voting by asserting it was riddled with fraud.

Democrats have largely embraced early voting, not only because of the pandemic but also because of steps the Trump administration has taken to slow down the processing of US&nbsp;mail.

Experts predict turnout will easily surpass the 138 million who voted in 2016. Only 47 million votes were submitted before&nbsp;Election&nbsp;Day four years ago.

US election 2020: Polls begin as voters decide on Trump's fate

With&nbsp;President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a> and his Democratic challenger, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/joe-biden">Joe Biden</a>&nbsp;locked in a dead heat on&nbsp;the eve of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/us-election">US election</a> 2020, the polls are trying the gauge the preference of the nation.

Latest opinion polls indicate the US presidential race is headed for a tight finish with the margin between Trump and Biden shrinking,&nbsp;particularly in key battleground states.

YouGov America's final&nbsp;poll ahead of the election gives Joe Biden a 9-point lead over Donald Trump, with the Democrat on 53.2 per cent&nbsp;compared to the Republican's 44.3 per cent. The research group suggests this would convert into an electoral college 364—174 majority for Biden. The threshold to win is 270.

Its poll gives Biden a large majority among people who have already voted — and a large majority for Trump among those who intend to turn out on election day. A breakdown of the figures suggests a tight race in some key states.

YouGov says it has carried out more than 99,000 interviews, including over 1,400 in the final 24-hour period, for its weekly polling.

A final Reuters/Ipsos&nbsp;national poll showed Biden with an outright majority among all likely voters: 52&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;said they were backing the Democratic nominee while 44&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;said they were voting for the Republican Trump.

A CNN Poll of Polls&nbsp;tracking the average poll result in the race gives Biden a 10-point lead of 52&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;to Trump's 42 per cent. But the US broadcaster points out that the president is elected by the electoral college, not the popular vote which national polls can only approximate.

The website FiveThirtyEight, which focuses on opinion poll analysis, says Biden is "clearly favoured" to win the election, coming out top in 90&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;of its simulations. But, it adds, bigger polling errors have happened in the past — pointing out that a 10&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;chance attributed to Trump "is roughly the same as the odds that it’s raining in downtown Los Angeles. And it does rain there".

An analysis by RealClearPolitics&nbsp;of "top battleground" states gives Biden the lead in five out of six — in Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona. Trump is given a 0.6 per cent&nbsp;lead in North Carolina. But of the five states the polling aggregator suggests are leaning towards Biden, only in two does the Democrat's lead the top five per cent.

Trump has advanced to a 7-point lead over Biden in Iowa, 48&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;to 41 per cent, according to a&nbsp;Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll. But a&nbsp;RealClearPolitics&nbsp;polling average for the state puts the incumbent president's lead at under one percent — with Trump on 46.5&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;and Biden on 45.8 per cent.

In&nbsp;Euronews' previous analysis of the polls early last week, they reported that the Democrat's poll rating had increased by several percentage points over the incumbent.

Some conservative commentators argue that despite survey adjustments made by pollsters since 2016, they are still ignoring factors that do not show up in their polls — which they suggest underestimate the level of support for Trump.

When asked about his stand on the issue, Joe Biden said that climate change and global warming were 'existential threat' to humanity and that everyone had moral responsibility to tackle it. He said that he was able to get both, environmental organisations and labour on board over his climate plan and that it would create millions of good-paying jobs for the Americans. Biden claimed his plans would create more jobs than the one Trump had. When it was his turn to speak, Biden challenged the numbers Trump cited saying "I don't know where he comes up this with these numbers from". "He is against wind," said Biden as he mentioned that wind and solar energy were one of the fastest-growing sectors in the US. "(Wind energy) is very expensive, kills a lot of birds," said Trump as Biden burst into laughter. Trump claimed that the fumes that come up in making wind turbines were dangerous, on which, Biden said "Find me a scientist who says this" This was the last debate between the presidential candidates. They will square off against each in polls that are due to take place on November 3.

Chelsea Handler is offering to pay 50 cents taxes provided he changes his political stand on the upcoming US presidential elections.

Earlier this week rapper 50 Cent took to Instagram to urge fans to 'vote for Trump' after learning about some of the numbers associated with Trump opponent Joe Biden's tax plan

The 45-year-old hip-hop mogul shared an image from a news broadcast stating that New York City would be taxed at a rate of 62% if Biden came to power. The Democratic candidate later clarified that such percentages will only apply to those making $400,000 or more per year.

"WHAT THE F---! (VOTE ForTRUMP) IM OUT," he wrote in the caption. "F--- NEW YORK The KNICKS never win anyway. I don’t care Trump doesn’t like black people 62% are you out of ya f---ing mind."

The following day, he took to Twitter and wrote, "Yeah, i don’t want to be 20cent. 62% is a very, very, bad idea. i don’t like it !"

Handler,&nbsp; who had once dated the rapper briefly 10 years ago, commented on his tweet and said, "You used to be my favorite ex-boyfriend."

"Oh my God this is effecting (sic) my love life now," 50 Cent responded.

"Hey f--ker! I will pay your taxes in exchange for you coming to your senses. Happily! Black lives matter. That’s you, f--ker! Remember?" Handler tweeted.

US Elections 2020: Quotes from Donald Trump and Joe Biden during the presidential debate

US President is known for his unique stance on various issues. Countless of his quotes have caused an outcry as well as have left people in splits. This happened again during the presidential debate between him and Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden. During the course of the debate, Trump said that wind energy "kills all the birds. Joe Biden gave a chuckle at this bizarre assertion.

Trump said his knew more about wind energy than Joe Biden

"It (wind energy) is very expensive, kills all the birds. It's very intermittent. It has got a lot of problems," said Trump.

He went on to say that the windmills were made in China and Germany and said that the fumes coming out during the manufacturing process "is more than anything we are talking about" with respect to carbon emissions.

"Find me a scientist who says that," Joe Biden said coolly.

Biden underlined that energy sector pertaining to wind and solar were the fastest growing fields that would create new jobs

"He thinks wind causes cancer, windmills," said Biden in an incredulous tone.

Trump is known for his hawkish views on environmental matters. In past, he has even claimed that climate change and global warming was a "hoax".

He defended his decision to take the US out of Paris accords.

"The Paris accords, I took us out because we were going to have to spend trillions of dollars and we were treated very unfairly," said Trump.

Lashing out at previous administrations, Trump said that they did a great 'disservice' by being part of the treaty and alleged that previous governments were going to take away our businesses.

US Elections 2020: Wind energy kills birds, says Donald Trump during presidential debate

Before the president’s last, best chance to change the trajectory of his reelection bid, his mandate Thursday evening was at once clear and complicated: Be less like Donald Trump.

It can be said that he tried, by his standard. He succeeded at various points in acting like the type of person he claims to disdain: a typical politician in a debate. He spoke with an inside voice while saluting his own pandemic response. He interrupted far less. He thanked the moderator for letting him chime in and did not sound sarcastic while doing so.

And it is far from certain that he helped himself enough anyway.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/us-election-2020-donald-trump-joe-biden-appear-for-last-presidential-debate-337290">Have a look|&nbsp;US Election 2020: Donald Trump, Joe Biden appear for last presidential debate</a>

Swiveling all night between heeding the advice of allies who have pleaded for uncharacteristic discipline and succumbing to impulses that can still consume him as he faces down an opponent he cannot process losing to, Trump stood before the electorate a candidate in conflict at his late campaign hour.

If Trump appeared to recognize that the debate represented his final mass audience less than two weeks before Election Day, he also showed the limits of even a more finely calibrated executive performance.

In an election that Joe Biden’s team has sought to frame as a referendum on the incumbent, particularly his handling of the coronavirus — an endeavor that Trump has often made quite straightforward for his rival — it was the president who entered Thursday night with more work to do, given the national and battleground state surveys showing him behind.

At times, his answers seemed tailored explicitly with this deficit in mind, targeted at groups with whom he must improve his standing, like seniors, whom he pledged at one point to “protect” four times in a matter of seconds.

But in a moment of relentless national upheaval, manifesting in protest, public health crisis and immense financial turmoil, Trump also could not help but accentuate the most essential qualities of his tenure Thursday, reverting to fits of magical-thinking-aloud and grievance-stuffed nonrestraint.

He set off on an extended meditation — most likely to resonate with only dedicated consumers of right-wing media — on whether Biden’s nickname was “the big man” as it related to his son’s business dealings. He dwelled on “the emails, the emails, the horrible emails” with conspiratorial repetition.

He invoked Abraham Lincoln to praise his own contributions to Black Americans.

He specked his virus defense with an aside that “we can’t lock ourselves up in a basement like Joe does,” before nodding at purportedly shadowy sources of Biden family wealth. (“He’s obviously made a lot of money someplace,” he said.)

The president’s opponents like to say there is only one Trump, and his advisers like to describe a different one: compassionate in private, they insist; altruistic in nature; brawling only when the task dictates as much.

Too often — and despite his best efforts Thursday — this latter case has tended to collapse in a hail of misstatement and self-congratulation.

He can resemble a chef with one dish, a golfer with one club in his bag — regardless of what the next stroke might require — and a propensity to blame his caddie for the attendant result.

If voters reject him next month, this will be the chief reason: The 2020 campaign is different, and Trump is not.

He still focused extensively Thursday on often unsubstantiated allegations against his opponent’s son, defying some Republican allies who have counseled that the attacks connect little beyond the conservative echo chamber where Trump is already beloved.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-election-2020-joe-biden-calls-donald-trumps-immigration-policies-criminal-337306">Also read|&nbsp;US election 2020: Joe Biden calls Donald Trump's immigration policies 'criminal'</a>

He still made virtually no attempt to outline a comprehensive second-term agenda that might appeal to any remaining political fence-sitters — to the extent that there are many left, in an election where many millions have already voted and most others are largely set in their views, according to polling.

Of course, political pliability was probably never going to be a prominent feature in a contest between two proud men in their 70s. Biden likewise demonstrated Thursday that he is very much the candidate that voters have come to know, for good or ill, across the decades: a creature of a bygone Washington, prone to throwback references, never entirely smooth.

He spoke of “Bidencare” and made a curious allusion to Hitler. He strained to supply a compelling rebuttal to Trump’s charge that he has been around Washington for almost a half-century to little effect.

Biden was often at his strongest pressing Trump on his stewardship during the pandemic, suggesting the president did not have the capacity to evolve in the job.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-elections-2020-i-think-hes-a-democrat-but-thats-ok-says-trump-on-fauci-337286">Also read|&nbsp;US Elections 2020: I think he's a Democrat, but that's OK, says Trump on Fauci</a>

“He says we’re learning to live with it,” Biden said of the virus. “People are learning to die with it.”

In an exchange about immigration, Biden highlighted the 545 children who were separated from their parents at the border, and whose parents cannot be located. “It makes us a laughingstock, and violates every notion of who we are as a nation,” Biden said.

Trump’s retort was to claim the children are “well taken care of,” and then to focus on the cages that have been used to hold them. “Who built the cages, Joe?”

A businessman who has long specialized in setting Houdini-like traps for himself and then trying to escape, Trump appeared mindful that this is almost certainly the last time he will ever be on a debate stage. In 2016, he managed to stay relatively disciplined for the final 10 days of the race, something his advisers have lamented since the disastrous last debate.

And if he was not his most unruly self Thursday, he also remains a man who believes firmly that a refusal to modulate is part of what delivered him to his position in the first place — reason enough, supporters say, to be reminded that this race is not yet over.

Through essentially his entire professional life, the president has delighted in making others adjust to his tics and whims, secure in the knowledge that if history was instructive, everything would more or less work out for him anyway.

He created the impression of business success by insisting, as loudly and frequently as possible, that he was successful at business. He flattened campaign precedent with gleeful name-calling and race-baiting and was rewarded with the presidency. He faced impeachment after encouraging a foreign government to investigate a rival and was, in his estimation, thoroughly vindicated when Senate Republicans declined to expel him from office.

Even the debate rules Thursday were an exercise in adapting to Trump and not the other way around: The candidates were muted for their counterpart’s opening answers to each topic, given Trump’s fire hose of interruptions the last time.

Such guard rails were only ever going to curb him so much. Trump had made clear that he was going to spend a portion of the night hammering Biden over his son’s business ventures, the subject of fevered attention (and more than occasional misinformation and misleading innuendo) on the president’s favored media outlets in recent days.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-elections-2020-quotes-from-donald-trump-and-joe-biden-during-the-presidential-debate-337286">Also read|&nbsp;US Elections 2020: Quotes from Donald Trump and Joe Biden during the presidential debate</a>

The strategy presented perils for both candidates. Biden has been known to grow flustered when challenged on matters of family, lashing out not only at opponents but also at members of the news media who question whether his son Hunter leveraged the Biden name for personal gain.

But there is little evidence that the approach has much helped Trump with the voters he needs: seniors, suburban women, those disinclined to share the president’s interest in the Fox News prime-time lineup.

Biden is also often at his most sympathetic when discussing his personal history, rife with tragedies like the car crash that killed his first wife and baby daughter in 1972 and the death of his son Beau from brain cancer in 2015.

Discussing Hunter, who has struggled with addiction, the former vice president has often appended a pointed descriptor: “my surviving son.”

Trump was undeterred, as ever.

For days leading up to the debate, he bypassed formal preparation but heard from a core group of advisers conveying a singular message with varying degrees of urgency: Control your temper. Do not talk over Biden. Do not come off as angry. They discussed with him issues they believe voters would want to hear about, including the economy and the competitive threat of China, in keeping with persistent Trump campaign insinuations that any foreign contacts by anyone should be examined.

But inevitably, Trump is liable to return to the subject that most grabs him: himself, and how unfairly he feels he is being treated.

The first debate appeared to hurt his cause not simply because Trump could not resist talking over Biden. It was, more precisely, a very public window into the version of Trump that led former White House counsel Donald McGahn to call him “King Kong” — the version that aides have long argued is a figment of the news media’s hyperbolic imagination.

That initial debate spectacle underscored what some people who have known Trump for years have said privately: that his volatility and anger do not wear well on people.

In this second night of what was supposed to be a three-debate run — the president’s own coronavirus case and refusal to debate virtually doomed another — Trump was less openly hostile.

But he still made the case that five years into his career in political debates, he is a different kind of leader, hoping to run as an outsider even after four years in office.

“It’s all-talk-no-action with these politicians,” he said in one exchange.

“I’m not a typical politician,” he said in another.

He was just trying to play one on television, in moderation, for at least one night.

Have a look| US Election 2020: Donald Trump, Joe Biden appear for last presidential debate Swiveling all night between heeding the advice of allies who have pleaded for uncharacteristic discipline and succumbing to impulses that can still consume him as he faces down an opponent he cannot process losing to, Trump stood before the electorate a candidate in conflict at his late campaign hour. Also read| US election 2020: Joe Biden calls Donald Trump's immigration policies 'criminal' But in a moment of relentless national upheaval, manifesting in protest, public health crisis and immense financial turmoil, Trump also could not help but accentuate the most essential qualities of his tenure Thursday, reverting to fits of magical-thinking-aloud and grievance-stuffed nonrestraint. (“He’s obviously made a lot of money someplace,” he said.) Also read| Other countries 'will pay a price': Joe Biden and Donald Trump talk about Russian interference The president’s opponents like to say there is only one Trump, and his advisers like to describe a different one: compassionate in private, they insist; altruistic in nature; brawling only when the task dictates as much. Also read| US election 2020: Joe Biden calls Donald Trump's immigration policies 'criminal' He still made virtually no attempt to outline a comprehensive second-term agenda that might appeal to any remaining political fence-sitters — to the extent that there are many left, in an election where many millions have already voted and most others are largely set in their views, according to polling. Also read| US Elections 2020: I think he's a Democrat, but that's OK, says Trump on Fauci “He says we’re learning to live with it,” Biden said of the virus. “People are learning to die with it.” In an exchange about immigration, Biden highlighted the 545 children who were separated from their parents at the border, and whose parents cannot be located. “It makes us a laughingstock, and violates every notion of who we are as a nation,” Biden said. Trump’s retort was to claim the children are “well taken care of,” and then to focus on the cages that have been used to hold them. “Who built the cages, Joe?” A businessman who has long specialized in setting Houdini-like traps for himself and then trying to escape, Trump appeared mindful that this is almost certainly the last time he will ever be on a debate stage. Also read| 'I cannot guarantee': Donald Trump backtracks on COVID-19 vaccine; Joe Biden slams his approach Through essentially his entire professional life, the president has delighted in making others adjust to his tics and whims, secure in the knowledge that if history was instructive, everything would more or less work out for him anyway. Also read| US Elections 2020: Quotes from Donald Trump and Joe Biden during the presidential debate The strategy presented perils for both candidates. Discussing Hunter, who has struggled with addiction, the former vice president has often appended a pointed descriptor: “my surviving son.” Trump was undeterred, as ever. A mandate to be less like himself? It can be said that Trump tried

Since getting tested for the novel coronavirus, Melania Trump has maintained a low profile and had cancelled all her public appearances. However, she made her first appearance since recovery on Wednesday during the final presidential debate.

Melania Trump was spotted supporting her husband and the&nbsp;current US President&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;as he debated his&nbsp;Democratic rival and former Vice President&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/joe-biden">Joe Biden</a>&nbsp;few days before the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/us-election">US elections</a>.

The First Lady had stayed back in the White House after her diagnose, while the President had shifted to the army hospital. Her condition, reports claim, had been more stable than the President's — a reason for which&nbsp;could be her younger age, the President had joked in an address.

The debate hall also saw the presence of Donald Trump's children&nbsp;Ivanka, Tiffany and Eric who were, in a rare moment, spotted wearing face masks this time at&nbsp;the debate hall in the Belmont University in Nashville.

Jill Biden, Joe Biden's wife, was also spotted in the room who came out to support her husband. Jill, too, was wearing a face mask, like last time.&nbsp;

Many believe that the only reason the Trump family was wearing masks this time, unlike last time, was because the&nbsp;Belmont University had made it mandatory for all attendees to cover their mouths and noses. Anyone who was found without a mask would have been asked to leave the room, as per local media.

However, the Trump children, who had opted for surgical masks, were seen removing their masks as soon as they were seated in the hall. Melania Trump, who matched her mask with her black dress, also left her mask on her seat when she rose to join her husband on the stage after the debate ended. She did, however, take her mask along later. Jill Biden, however, flaunted her mask all through the debate, and also on the stage while she hugged and congratulated her husband for the last presidential debate.

Former intelligence chief of Saudi slams Palestinian leadership's criticism of UAE-Israel deal

First US Presidential Debate is over. Millions viewed it across the world. Since the US is an important country, the competence of the US President matters in world affairs.

As usual, journalists and people from all walks of life would now discuss to decide who was the winner of the first debate. Many surveys would be carried out to check what people think. Some would support Trump, some would support Biden, and the result of the online opinion survey would be interpreted by journalists as per their perspectives and prejudices.&nbsp;

While presidential debates of previous US Presidential Elections were not known to have been of scholarly standards the first debate this time around appears to mark a new low standard. Presidential aspirant Joe Biden brought down the standards of the debate by calling Trump a liar and saying that he was bluffing. Trump was a little better, though he unnecessarily and mischievously made reference to Biden's son.

Most of the viewers must have realised that whatever was being said in the debate was said several times before during the last few weeks and nothing interesting was being brought into focus.

Ultimately, what stood out in the debate was Biden calling Trump a liar. People may have been left wondering whether this was a language befitting a presidential aspirant.&nbsp;

The anchor who conducted the debate did not do any better. That's because he gave the impression that he was questioning Trump more critically than Biden. One could not help but note the fact that the anchor did not caution Biden to not use words such a liar.

There was much cross-talk and interruptions by both the candidates which reduced the presidential debate to an acrimonious TV debate. Should those aspiring to become US President reflect such standards?

It was surprising that queries raised by the anchor were very ordinary and it seemed that he did not do his homework properly.

For example, during the debate on COVID-19, there was space for the anchor to ask challenging questions. Questions should have been crafted on the origin of the virus and Trump's criticism of WHO. Trump would have struggled to answer.

Similarly, Biden should have been asked about how he would have handled the COVID 19 crisis better.

It was surprising to see Trump bring up India saying that COVID-19 figures from India were not correct. It would have been appropriate if he would have mentioned the veracity of the figures from China.

The debate may throw up paramount doubts in the minds of the viewers about the possible dearth of talent in US for the choice of the next president.

One only hopes that the second round of debate would be more productive with all three of them namely Trump, Biden and the anchor doing better homework and coming out with probing questions and intelligent answers.

The candidates should avoid abuses. Sarcastic humour is necessary for such debates. However, it can only be an interesting tool when the contesting candidates and the anchor have the debating talent to emphasise their points with humour and impact.

First US Presidential Debate is over. Millions viewed it across the world. Since the US is an important country, the competence of the US President matters in world affairs. As usual, journalists and people from all walks of life would now discuss to decide who was the winner of the first debate. Many surveys would be carried out to check what people think. Some would support Trump, some would support Biden, and the result of the online opinion survey would be interpreted by journalists as per their perspectives and prejudices. Ultimately, what stood out in the debate was Biden calling Trump a liar. People may have been left wondering whether this was a language befitting a presidential aspirant. One could not help but note the fact that the anchor did not caution Biden to not use words such a liar. (Text has been translated) 1- O candidato à presidência dos EUA, Joe Biden, disse ontem que poderia nos pagar U$ 20 bilhões para pararmos de "destruir" a Amazônia ou nos imporia sérias restrições econômicas. — Jair M. Bolsonaro (@jairbolsonaro) September 30, 2020 × Bolsonaro openly condemned the statement by Biden and urged him to not act out of 'greedy' motives. "However, the explicit demonstration of this greed by someone who is running for the presidency of his country is a clear sign of contempt for cordial and fruitful coexistence between two sovereign nations." He also hinted towards his friendship with the Presiden Donald Trump by mentioning his ongoing conversation with Trump. "US cooperation is welcome, including for sustainable investment projects that create decent jobs for the Amazonian population, as I have been talking to President Trump." × The Bolsonaro-led government has often clashed with the international media and western governments over protection and destruction of the Amazon forests.

Kangana Ranaut found herself trending on social media over the weekend for a rather unusual reason. The Bollywood actress who is known to speak her mind on issues related to the film industry and the country at large found her name trending amid the conversation around the upcoming US Presidential elections.

On Sundat, President Donald Trump said he would "strongly demand a drug test" of opponent Joe Biden" before Tuesday’s presidential debate.

Trump tweeted, "I will be strongly demanding a Drug Test of Sleepy Joe Biden prior to, or after, the Debate on Tuesday night. Naturally, I will agree to take one also. His Debate performances have been record setting UNEVEN, to put it mildly. Only drugs could have caused this discrepancy,."

Kangana's earlier tweets on drug abuse in Bollywood has led to the Narcotics Control Bureau to inititate a large scale investigation in the matter. What started off as a probe in Sushant Singh Rajput's case with Rhea Chakraborty's arrest, the probe has now been widened with several prominent Bollywood actresses including Deepika Padukone being summoned by the NCB for questioning.

The NCB has already arrested 20 people in connection with the case including Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik.

The United States Treasury on Thursday imposed sanctions on two&nbsp;Lebanon-based firms&nbsp;for allegedly funnelling millions to Hezbollah.

The US Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC, sanctioned the companies Arch Consulting and Meamar Construction ''for being owned, controlled, or directed by Hezbollah.''

OFAC also sanctioned Sultan Khalifah Asaad, saying that he is a Hezbollah official closely associated with both companies.

''Hezbollah leverages Arch and Meamar to conceal money transfers to Hezbollah's own accounts, further enriching Hezbollah's leadership and supporters, and depriving the Lebanese people of much-needed funds,''&nbsp;the Treasury said.

The US&nbsp;move comes at a sensitive time, as a new government is being formed under a tight deadline in a bid to extricate Lebanon from a deep economic crisis that poses the biggest threat to the country's stability since the 1975-1990 civil war.

The country is also facing a political deadlock amid delays in the formation of a new, crisis Cabinet, because of a portfolio dispute.

&nbsp; The United States considers the Iran-backed Hezbollah a terrorist organisation and has imposed sanctions on many of the militant group's officials in the past.

Last week, Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah had condemned&nbsp;US sanctions against two former ministers from allied political parties over alleged corruption and aid to the group.

"We view this unjust decision as a badge of honour for our two dear friends," the Iran-backed movement had said in a statement after Washington&nbsp;blacklisted and imposed sanctions on former finance minister Ali Hassan Khalil and ex-transport minister Youssef Fenianos.

So&nbsp;now that a whole day has passed, the timeline was expected to get shorter, and so it did. In an interaction with few local reporters on Wednesday, Trump told them the vaccine will be ready till October, i.e. two weeks.

In a race to win the&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/us-election">US elections</a>, which are scheduled for November 03, Trump seems to be ready to play with every possible trick down his sleeve and COVID-19 vaccine happens to be one of them.

The recent claim of the vaccine being ready within two weeks has come after the remarks made in the&nbsp;Senate testimony by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Robert Redfield.

On Wednesday, Redfield had told lawmakers that a "very limited" distribution to of the vaccine will be made available to priority groups including first responders, and the timeline for that may be around November or December, clearing that this was not guaranteed. He had also added&nbsp;that full implementation would take many more months at least.
