United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Feb 25) unveiled a new residency permit for wealthy foreigners—a ‘Gold Card’.
The president announced that he would sell this new ‘Gold Card’ to rich foreign nationals, allowing them a right to live and work in the US, similar to the coveted ‘green card’.

What is Gold Card and how is it different from Green Card?

While the Green Card grants people permanent residency in the US, usually through employment, family sponsorship, or investment (via EB-5), the Gold Card offers the same benefits for a whopping $5 million purchase price to help fast-track US citizenship for wealthy applicants.

The Green Card offers US residency on the basis of merit or relationship criteria. However, a Gold Card will serve as a direct route for wealthy foreigners to obtain residency.
The Gold Cards would replace the government’s EB-5 immigrant investor visa programme. This route allowed foreign investors to pump money into US projects that create jobs and then apply for visas to immigrate to the US. Currently, the programme issues green cards to immigrants who invest at least $1,050,000, or $800,000 in economically distressed zones called targeted employment areas to create jobs for American workers.

Who can purchase the ‘Gold Card’?

The president announced that the ‘Gold Card’ would be available for anyone who can afford it, provided they clear the vetting process. The cost of securing US citizenship through this method would be $5 million.
“You have a green card. This is a gold card. We're going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million and that's going to give you green card privileges, plus it's going to be a route to citizenship. And wealthy people would be coming into our country by buying this card,” Trump announced, speaking from the Oval Office at the White House.
According to Trump, even Russian oligarchs—usually heavily sanctioned by the US—could buy this gold card and US citizenship.

The sale of these ‘gold cards’ would begin in the next two weeks, said the US president, adding that millions of such cards could be sold to the highest bidders.

Why did Trump introduce ‘Gold Card’?

Trump claimed that the new programme would generate significant revenue that would help in paying back the national debt. He further predicted strong interest from wealthy individuals and suggested selling one million gold cards.
Trump’s Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who was standing alongside Trump as the announcement was made, said that the EB-5 visa programme was being exploited and has been priced too low.

“The EB-5 program ... it was full of nonsense, make believe and fraud, and it was a way to get a green card that was low price. So the president said, rather than having this sort of ridiculous EB-5 program, we're going to end the EB-5 program. We're going to replace it with the Trump gold card,” he said.

The video further showed people dancing as dollar bills rained down, while an AI-generated Elon Musk was seen enjoying a local dish, basking in the spectacle.
Trump was also seen dancing with a scantily clad woman. Moreover, at the end of the video, Trump was seen lounging with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by the pool at one of his hotels, which was emblazoned with large golden words "Trump Gaza".

Israeli PM Netanyahu said that it was worth paying attention to this idea and that US control of the Gaza Strip "could change history".
However, his proposal sparked worldwide criticism, with countries slamming Trump's move and calling it a "forced transfer" or "unacceptable issue".

Elon Musk's Canadian citizenship at risk? 250,000 citizens sign petition to strip him of Canada passport

Ukraine's infrastructure has been on the frontlines since Russia's invasion began in 2022. 3 years later, a joint assessment by Ukraine, the World Bank, the European Commission, and the UN, reveals that Ukraine needs $524 billion dollars over the next decade to rebuild. This figure is 2.8 times Ukraine's estimated 2024 GDP. Interestingly, this figure is also what US President Donald Trump aims to extract from Ukraine in the form of critical minerals to continue military aid.

Ukraine's cost of recovery

The latest assessment, which covers damage from February 2022 to December 2024, shows a sharp rise from the $486 billion dollar estimate released in early 2024. The report highlights the scale of destruction across key sectors.
The war has destroyed 13 per cent of Ukraine's housing stock, affecting over 2.5 million households. Frontline regions in the East, North, and South account for 75 per cent of the total destruction. Energy infrastructure has been a primary target, with Russian strikes on the power grid causing widespread blackouts. Despite Ukraine's recovery plans focusing on restoring energy systems and housing, the escalating damage presents major hurdles.
This comes as Trump engages with Russia regarding peace restoration in the region. The 'Peace talks' have raised concerns over no Ukrainian participation. Meanwhile, Ukraine's critical minerals are at the centre of Trump-Zelensky negotiations. Trump has asked for strategic access to Ukraine's critical minerals worth $500 billion in exchange for continued military aid. While Zelensky dismissed the offer earlier, saying that such a deal could burden Ukrainians for generations, the latest reports suggest that Ukraine and the US have agreed terms on a minerals deal.
However, the burden is growing on Ukraine to start rebuilding after 3 years of destruction.

Ukraine's $524 billion restructuring bill: How long before Ukraine can 'stand up on its feet'?

The United Kingdom is facing its toughest fiscal test in decades. The country's debt-to-GDP ratio now nears 100 per cent, up from 45 per cent before the 2008 financial crisis. Bond markets are showing signs of strain, and the foreign exchange reserves are dwindling. How is the government tackling this slump? By boosting defence spending!
While this may seem out of place on the surface, this boost is expected to help Starmer when he visits US President Donald Trump on February 27. Starmer, along with other European leaders, is trying to manage what we call the 'Trump effect.' The UK is no exception to Trump's tariff onslaught, as it looks to tackle external challenges along with domestic stagnation. While Trump recently advocated for reduced global military spending, the President has been pressuring NATO allies to increase defence spending to 5 per cent of GDP.

UK hikes defence spending to highest since Cold War

The UK's defence spending is set to rise to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2027. The government has also outlined the long-term goal of increasing it to 3 per cent in the next parliament. This move marks the highest military budget increase since the Cold War. While Starmer believes this boosts the country's defences in the aftermath of the Ukraine war, the broader goal seems to align with Trump's strategies.
However, the defence hike for the UK is tougher, considering the economic challenges gripping the country. Consumers and businesses already oppose the recent tax hike introduced in the budget, with few options for the government to boost their vaults. The question remains...where will the extra money come from?
According to Starmer, it will come by making tough choices. In this case, it means cutting the overseas development aid and diverting that money to the military. ‘In the short term, it can only be funded through hard choices, and in this case, that means we will cut our spending on development assistance, moving from 0.5 per cent of GNI today to 0.3 per cent in 2027, fully funding our increased investment in defence. I want to be clear to the house that is not an announcement I am happy to make,' he said.
How will this move impact the talks between Starmer and Trump? Can the UK become the leader of Europe's collective defence? We will have to wait for the meeting to conclude.

Business & Economy, While Trump recently advocated for reduced global military spending, he has been pressuring NATO allies to increase defence spending to 5 per cent of GDP.

UK hikes defence spending to highest since Cold War The UK's defence spending is set to rise to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2027. Military vs aid: Starmer shifts spending priorities ahead of Washington visit

The United States and Ukraine have agreed to terms on a deal over natural resources and reconstruction, CNN reported citing a Ukrainian official. This comes a day after President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (Feb 25) that his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky wants to come to Washington later this week suggesting a possible end to the three-year-old Russia-Ukraine war.
This comes amid Washington's dramatic shift of policy that includes Trump reaching out to Russia, angering Europe.
The source said the terms were agreed upon after "everything unacceptable was taken out of the text and it is now more clearly spelt out how this agreement will contribute to Ukraine's security and peace".

The news agency Reuters said in its source-based report that the visit is scheduled for Friday (Feb 28). However, the US has not confirmed whether or not the terms of a deal have been agreed.
"I hear that he's coming on Friday. Certainly it's okay with me if he'd like to, and he would like to sign it together with me. And I understand that’s a big deal, very big deal," Trump said from the Oval Office on Tuesday.

Since coming to the office for the second time, Trump has often claimed that had he been the president, the Russia-Ukraine war would never have started.
He has now demanded that Ukraine give access to its rare earth minerals to compensate for the billions of dollars of wartime aid it received under Joe Biden.
A senior Ukrainian source told the news agency AFP on the condition of anonymity late Tuesday that the deal would see the US jointly develop Ukraine's mineral wealth, with revenues going to a newly created fund that would be "joint for Ukraine and America".

The source further added that the draft of the deal included a reference to "security". However, it did not set out America's commitments -- one of Kyiv's prior demands for an agreement.
"There is a general clause that says America will invest in a stable and prosperous sovereign Ukraine, that it works for a lasting peace, and that America supports efforts to guarantee security."

Earlier, Zelensky had denied Trump's demands to give the United States $500 billion worth of valuable minerals used in aerospace, electric vehicles and other technologies. While markets remain volatile amid US President Donald Trump's tariffs onslaught, big tech giants seem to follow Trump's aggressive 'America First' stance. The country is witnessing a surge in AI and semiconductor investments, with major firms committing hundreds of billions of dollars to expand domestic production.

Apple bets on US

Apple has announced a $500 billion investment over the next 4 years. This includes a new AI server plant in Texas and the creation of 20,000 research and development jobs across the country. Apple is also doubling its advanced manufacturing fund to $10 billion, with a major focus on semiconductor production.
However, Analysts note that Apple's pledge includes spending that was already planned, raising questions about whether this represents a true expansion. The investment announcement comes after reports of Apple CEO Tim Cook meeting with Donald Trump. Trump had earlier announced Apple's plan with no specifics on the investment details.
‘Yesterday I had Tim Cook in the office from Apple. He's investing hundreds of billions of dollars. I don't know. I hope he's announced it. I hope I didn't announce this. But what the hell all I do is tell the truth. That's what he told me. Now he has to do it, right?' he said.
Apple's announcement is part of a larger trend of AI and infrastructure investments in the US. Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son committed $100 billion over the next 4 years, aimed at AI-driven job creation. The Japanese tech giant had earlier pledged $50 billion in 2016.
Trump also unveiled a $500 billion AI initiative called 'Stargate,' in partnership with Oracle, Softbank, and OpenAI. The venture will start with 10 data centres under construction in Texas. Trump credits these investments to growing confidence in his economic policies. Meanwhile, Trump's tariffs continue to dictate volatility in global markets.

Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) leader Elon Musk on Monday (Feb 24) warned federal employees who have not returned to the office that they would be put on administrative leave if they fail to report back.
This comes a month after US President Donald Trump said that government workers must return to office how it was before the pandemic “or be terminated.”
“Those who ignored President Trump’s executive order to return to work have now received over a month’s warning,” Musk wrote in an X post.
“Starting this week, those who still fail to return to office will be placed on administrative leave.”
Musk’s post was a reply to a post by Rep. Ralph Norman, who said that no government agency was occupying even half of their office space.
In January, the president said that he believed very few federal workers would return to the office and “therefore our government will get smaller and more efficient.”
Trump signed an executive order to end work from home and require employees to return to the office in person. The department heads were ordered to “as soon as practicable, take all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to work in-person at their respective duty stations on a full-time basis.”
All government agencies have given deadlines to employees for when they must return to the office full-time. Employees were offered buyouts in case they did not wish to return to the office.

Musk’s previous email

Over the weekend, federal workers were sent an email by Musk’s team asking workers, “What did you do last week?” Musk warned that failing to reply to the email would be taken as their resignation.
However, FBI Director Kash Patel instructed the staff in his agency to “please pause any responses”, making clear that “no employee is obligated to report their activities outside of their Department chain of command.” This email sparked confusion among the employees.

A former officer of Russia’s Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (KGB) has made a stunning claim: US President Donald Trump was allegedly recruited as a potential Soviet asset in the 1980s. Alnur Mussayev, a former Kazakh intelligence chief who served in the KGB’s 6th Directorate, insists that recruiting Western businessmen was a strategic priority for the KGB, and Trump, with his rising real estate empire, was a prime candidate.

A still-active KGB file?

Mussayev asserts that Trump’s KGB file remains active and is now under the supervision of a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. While no concrete evidence has been presented, the claim has reignited long-standing suspicions regarding Trump’s ties to Russia.

Trump’s 1987 Moscow trip

Mussayev claims that Trump’s recruitment allegedly took place during his 1987 visit to the Soviet Union. At the time, Trump was exploring potential real estate deals in Moscow, but according to the former KGB officer, his meetings with Soviet officials may have had a more covert purpose. The KGB, in the mid-1980s, had reportedly adjusted its recruitment strategy to focus on influential Western figures.
However, Trump has consistently denied any connection to Russian intelligence, dismissing claims of collusion with Putin as "ridiculous" and "fake news." While some US officials, including former members of his administration, have raised concerns about his notably respectful approach toward the Russian president. There is no official confirmation or hard proof to support Mussayev’s statements.

Zelensky backing down on minerals deal? Ukrainian Prez's video suggests Trump may have won this round of negotiations

US trans actress Hunter Schafer, known for HBO hit show "Euphoria," has said her passport gender marker was changed to male, slamming the Trump administration which has demonized any recognition of gender diversity.

Schafer blamed the policies of US President Donald Trump for the modification of her gender -- despite having identity documents marked female "coming up on a decade now" -- in a TikTok story published Thursday evening and rebroadcast as a video Friday.
"I filled everything out just like I normally would. I put female and when it was picked up today and I opened it up, they had changed the marker to male," she said, brandishing her passport and explaining she had had to renew the document after it was stolen last year.
Trump in his first days in office declared the country would recognize only two genders -- men and women -- and has targeted transgender people in a slew of other orders.
According to the State Department, under an executive order on what the Trump administration calls "Gender Ideology Extremism," the Bureau of Consular Affairs would stop issuing identification documents with an "X" marker for non-binary people.

"We will only issue passports with an M or F sex marker that match the customer's biological sex at birth," the website says.
Schafer said her gender on her birth certificate hasn't been changed to female, leading her to believe that "the agencies who are in charge of passports... are now required to cross reference birth certificates."
"This is the first time this has happened to me since I changed my gender marker... and I do believe it is a direct result of the administration our country is currently operating under."
She said she was "shocked" to see the "M" on her passport and that she was spurred to post about it to "note the reality of the situation and that it is actually happening."
Despite her concerns, Schafer was defiant.
Trans people "are never going to stop existing. I'm never gonna stop being trans, a letter in a passport can't change that and fuck this administration," the actress in her twenties said, speaking firmly into the camera on her phone.

Euphoria actress calls out Trump govt after passport gender change

The Associated Press filed a lawsuit against three White House officials on Friday after the news agency was barred from some of US President Donald Trump's events.
The AP, in the suit filed in a federal court in Washington, said the denial of access violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and of the press.
The White House began blocking AP journalists from the Oval Office 10 days ago over the news agency's refusal to follow Trump's executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America."
The ban on AP reporters was later extended to Air Force One.
The news group said it was bringing the suit against three Trump administration officials to "vindicate its rights to the editorial independence guaranteed by the United States Constitution."
"The White House has ordered The Associated Press to use certain words in its coverage or else face an indefinite denial of access," the AP said.
"The press and all people in the United States have the right to choose their own words and not be retaliated against by the government," it said.
"The Constitution does not allow the government to control speech. Allowing such government control and retaliation to stand is a threat to every American's freedom."
The suit names as defendants White House chief of staff Susan Wiles and deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich, as well as White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
"We'll see them in court," Leavitt said during an appearance Friday at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.
"We feel we are in the right. We are going to ensure that truth and accuracy is present at that White House every single day," she said.
In its style guide, the AP noted that the Gulf of Mexico has "carried that name for more than 400 years."
"The Associated Press will refer to it by its original name while acknowledging the new name Trump has chosen," it said.
"As a global news agency that disseminates news around the world, the AP must ensure that place names and geography are easily recognizable to all audiences."
Trump called the AP a "radical left organization" on Thursday and said the new Gulf of America name is "something that we feel strongly about."
His leveraging of press access underscores the Republican president's longstanding animosity toward traditional news outlets, which he accuses of bias against him.
The White House Correspondents' Association has called AP's exclusion from Trump events "outrageous."

US President Donald Trump has once again criticised USAID funding to India, this time labeling the $21 million allocated for "voter turnout" as "a kickback scheme". Trump didn't provide evidence or clarify who benefited from the alleged scheme.
The BJP responded to Trump's comments, accusing Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of seeking foreign interference in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. They pointed to Gandhi's remarks at a London event as evidence.
"$21 million for voter turnout in India. Why are we caring about India turnout? We got enough problems... it's a kickback scheme, you know," Trump said at a Republican Governors' conference.
"In many cases, many of these cases actually, you have no idea what we’re talking about. That means there's a kickback because nobody has any idea what's going on," Trump said.
Trump's latest allegation comes a day after he questioned a move by former president Joe Biden's administration to provide $21 million to India for "voter turnout" and questioned if they were "trying to get somebody else elected".
"USD 21 million for voter turnout in India. Why do we need to spend USD 21 million for voter turnout in India? I guess they (the Biden administration) were trying to get somebody else elected. We have got to tell the Indian government... This is a total breakthrough," he said.

Trump's second term sparks controversy: 57% Americans say he overstepped authority

US President Donald Trump said that he likes the idea of sending some of the savings from the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) back to the US citizens as a kind of dividend.
During an investment conference in Miami on Wednesday (Feb 19), the president said that the administration is considering a concept where 20 per cent of the savings generated by DOGE’s cost-cutting efforts go back to Americans. While another 20 per cent would go to paying down the national debt, he said.
He added that this arrangement would also incentivise people to report any wasteful spending.

‘I love it’: Trump backs idea of sending some savings from DOGE back to US citizens

An appeals court upheld an order on Wednesday blocking President Donald Trump from ending birthright citizenship for children whose parents are in the United States illegally.
The emergency request was filed by the Justice Department in an attempt to clear the path for Trump's executive order, which has been blocked by judges in lower district courts since it was issued in January.
Trump's order attempts to redefine the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which decrees that anyone born on US soil is a citizen.
Among the most controversial of Trump's executive orders, it claims the right does not apply to the children of anyone other than permanent residents and citizens.
The request was denied by a panel of three judges from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, who were nominated by Trump and former presidents Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush.
"Here, the Government has not shown that it is entitled to immediate relief," judge Danielle Forrest, who was appointed by Trump in 2019, said in the ruling.

She said the "sole basis" for seeking the emergency request was that the district court had "stymied the implementation of an Executive Branch policy... nationwide for almost three weeks."
She said "deciding important substantive issues on one week's notice turns our usual decision-making process on its head" and that the circumstances did not "dictate that we must."
Trump's executive order was due to come into effect by February 19 but was first blocked temporarily by a federal judge in January, and the timeframe has since been extended.
His orders have faced growing pushback from the courts, with about a dozen injunctions issued so far from among some 40 lawsuits.
The Trump administration made its first appeal to the Supreme Court in a separate case on Sunday to allow him to fire the head of a whistleblower protection agency.
The Supreme Court, which includes three Trump-nominated justices, is primed to play a significant role in what some experts suggest is a looming constitutional crisis as the president tests the limits of his executive power and the judiciary pushes back.

The Ukraine peace talks between the US and Russia are also turning into pro-economic discussions. Representatives from Russia and the United States have initiated talks on reviving economic cooperation. Kirill Dmitriev, the CEO of the Russian direct investment fund, is at the centre of the negotiations.
According to him, US companies suffer equally from these sanctions, having lost an estimated $300 billion after exiting the Russian market. While details remain undisclosed, Dmitriev indicated that both sides are considering economic initiatives that could move forward within 2-3 months.

Impact of sanctions on the Russian economy

Russia has been severely impacted by the sanctions onslaught following the war in Ukraine. Measures include trade restrictions, freezing Russian assets worth $300 billion, and cutting Russian banks off global financial networks. Despite this, the Russian economy has survived, instead thrived, driven by military spending and 'shadow' oil revenues. The discussions in Saudi Arabia have come as a major relief for the Russian economy, which is slowly seeing the adverse effects of sanctions in the long run.
The question remains --- Could the US lift or ease economic sanctions on Russia? President Donald Trump has already voiced scepticism over economic sanctions. While he hinted at putting sanctions on the negotiations table to get some leverage, he also signalled a willingness to strike a broader deal.
While the Russian economy dealt with the consequences of sanctions, western brands were also in the crossfire. Many had to exit a lucrative Russian market and reassess their business priorities as geopolitical uncertainties mount.

Strategy shift for the European Union?

The European Union has not embraced the idea of opening to Russia, at least economically. The region controls most of Russia's frozen assets and has implemented 15 rounds of sanctions targeting Russian energy.
The EU will face a reality check if the US softens its stance on Russia. The union is also facing its own economic challenges, with corporations periodically highlighting the economic consequence of sanctions.
The coming months will determine whether these talks lead to a strategic realignment.

"Probably," Trump said at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach when asked if he still expected to meet with Putin before the end of the month.

As per AFP news agency, it is standard practice for incoming presidents to replace US attorneys, the chief federal prosecutors overseeing the 94 federal court districts across the country.
In anticipation of being replaced, many Biden-era US attorneys had already resigned following Trump’s November election victory.

Mexico on Monday (Feb 17) warned Google that it was prepared to take legal action against the tech giant if it insists on renaming the "Gulf of Mexico" as the "Gulf of America" for US-based Maps users.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, speaking at her daily press briefing, said that her government has once again reiterated its opposition to the change in a letter to Google.

"We will wait for Google's response and, if not, we will proceed in court," added the Mexico president added, doubling down on a threat she first made previously.

Parts of host David Tennant’s jokes on US President Donald Trump during his BAFTA Awards monologue have now been edited. A sizeable chunk of his monologue was removed from the broadcast. The BAFTA Awards event was pre-recorded two hours before airing.
BAFTA Awards took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday (Feb 16). Due to time constraints, the final broadcast was edited down from three hours to two, resulting in the removal of several segments. What caught everyone’s attention was that Tennant’s jokes on Trump didn’t make it to the final broadcast.

Many jokes on Trump were cut from BBC

One of the omitted jokes compared Trump to the supernatural character Beetlejuice. Tennant joked, “Donald Trump—I’m worried. I’ve said his name three times. It’s like Beetlejuice—I’ve summoned him.”
Another comment that didn’t make it to the broadcast was Tennant referencing the film, The Apprentice, in which Sebastian Stan stars as a young Trump. Tennant joked that the former president had probably never watched the film because “it’s a 15 [referring to the UK film rating], and it’s not on Nickelodeon.”
Some other jokes that didn’t it to air included his remarks about Conclave, including playful comparisons between the film’s setting and Pop Idol. Also, a joke about actor Stanley Tucci making the best Bellini cocktails, was also left out of the final broadcast.

Notably, one Trump joke did make it, in which Tennant poked fun at his signature hairstyle. He said, “It’s the boldest architecture in film this year, apart from Donald Trump’s hair in The Apprentice.”
In another joke, David Tennant compared Trump with infamous villains and said, “Nosferatu, Hugh Grant in Heretic, and most chilling of all, [Wallace and Gromit antagonist] Feather McGraw.”

BBC's reply on omission

When asked why BBC decided to cut out many jokes, the British broadcaster explained that the show’s broadcast requires editing due to time constraints.
BBC said the trims were not unusual, as the awards show typically needs to be condensed before airing.
