An Indian doctoral student at Columbia University, Ranjani Srinivasan, was compelled to leave the United States after her visa was revoked over pro-Palestinian protests and alleged links to Hamas. The US Department of State cancelled her student visa on 5 March, citing security concerns.
Srinivasan, 37, had been pursuing a PhD in urban planning when she found herself caught in the US government's crackdown on pro-Palestinian protests. Despite no evidence being presented, she was accused of supporting violence and having ties to Hamas. The situation escalated when federal immigration agents arrived at her apartment, prompting her to make the sudden decision to leave the country.

<h2>Government claims vs legal defence</h2>
On Friday, the Trump administration confirmed the visa revocation, stating that Srinivasan had been expelled for "advocating for violence and terrorism." However, officials did not provide details of any evidence supporting this claim. Srinivasan&rsquo;s lawyers strongly denied the allegations, insisting she had not engaged in illegal activities or promoted violence.
<h2>What happened when immigration officials approached Srinivasan?</h2>
Srinivasan's first run-in with federal agents occurred eight days before her departure when three immigration officers arrived at her Columbia University apartment. Having recently discovered that her visa had been invalidated, she refused to open the door, according to The New York Times.
The agents returned the following night, only hours after another Columbia student, Mahmoud Khalil, was arrested by immigration authorities. However, Srinivasan was not at home during their second visit.
Following Khalil&rsquo;s arrest, Srinivasan decided to leave immediately. She packed some belongings, left her cat with a friend, and boarded a flight to Canada from LaGuardia Airport. By the time agents returned for a third time on Thursday night with a judicial warrant, she was already out of the country.
<h2>'Fearful for my life'</h2>
In an interview with The New York Times, Srinivasan spoke about her fear and uncertainty, stating, "The atmosphere seemed so volatile and dangerous."
She also raised concerns about the government&rsquo;s crackdown on free speech, adding, "I'm fearful that even the most low-level political speech... can turn into this dystopian nightmare where somebody is calling you a terrorist sympathiser and making you, literally, fear for your life and your safety."
Her departure left her roommate to deal with the pressure as immigration officers continued their search for her.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later confirmed that Srinivasan had voluntarily "self-deported" using the CBP Home App. US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem defended the decision, saying, "It is a privilege to be granted a visa to live and study in the United States of America. <h2>Academic background</h2>
Srinivasan holds an M.Phil. in Urban Planning from Columbia University, a Master&rsquo;s in Design from Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Design from CEPT University in India.
<h2>Columbia University under pressure</h2>
Columbia University has faced increasing scrutiny from the Trump administration in recent weeks. The US government recently revoked $400 million in federal grants and contracts, much of it for medical research, as a penalty for the university&rsquo;s perceived failure to crack down on students and faculty who criticised Israel&rsquo;s military actions in Gaza during protests last spring.
President Donald Trump and other officials accused the protesters of being "pro-Hamas" following the militant group's attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. The administration has since threatened to permanently withdraw federal funding unless Columbia implements major changes, including reforming its admissions process and placing its Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies Department under external control for five years.
Tensions at Columbia have escalated further following the arrest of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, a student who played a key role in last spring's protests.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer shined some light on his "plan B" if the Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree upon the ceasefire with Ukraine. Starmer along with French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, took part in a virtual "coalition of the willing" meeting on Saturday (March 15).
In the meeting, Starmer urged Putin to drop his "unreasonable" demands and commit to the peace. He asked the Russian president to &ldquo;let the guns fall silent&rdquo;.&nbsp;

The UK PM said a &ldquo;coalition of the willing&rdquo; must be prepared to help Ukraine into a strong position even if peace talks fall apart.
&ldquo;We will build up Ukraine&rsquo;s own defenses and armed forces, and be ready to deploy as a &lsquo;coalition of the willing&rsquo; in the event of a peace deal, to help secure Ukraine on the land, at sea, and in the sky," Starmer said.&nbsp;

'Putin will HAVE to come to the table': Starmer's 'Plan B' for Ukraine ceasefire

Donald Trump tried Saturday to invoke a law last used during World War II against Japanese residents to target a Venezuelan gang -- only to find his decision blocked by a judge.
The US president had issued an order to deport alleged members of the Venezuelan drug gang Tren de Aragua, arguing he had a right to declare them "alien enemies" under a wartime act.
But rights lawyers went to court and a federal judge ordered the administration not to deport anyone until he has more time to consider the legality of the order. &nbsp;
The Alien Enemies Act of 1798 is a wartime authority that allows a president to detain or deport citizens of an enemy nation, and has been invoked three times.
It was used in the War of 1812, World War I and -- most famously -- between 1942 and 1946 during World War II to intern around 120,000 Japanese and Japanese-Americans.
Now, Trump, who has promised supporters an aggressive drive to deport thousands of undocumented migrants, is targeting Tren de Aragua.
In a proclamation, the White House declared that the transnational criminal organization is closely linked to the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
"The result is a hybrid criminal state that is perpetrating an invasion of and predatory incursion into the United States," the presidential statement said.
<h2>'Extreme measure' </h2>
Trump said Tren de Aragua is "conducting irregular warfare against the territory of the United States both directly and at the direction, clandestine or otherwise, of the Maduro regime."
The statement gives Trump's Attorney General Pam Bondi 60 days to enact the ruling making all Tren de Aragua gang members "subject to immediate apprehension, detention and removal."
The detention and expulsion order will apply to all Venezuelan Tren de Aragua members who are over 14 and not naturalized US citizens or lawful permanent residents.
"The Trump administration's intent to use a wartime authority for immigration enforcement is as unprecedented as it is lawless," said Lee Gelernt, of the American Civil Liberties Union.
"It may be the administration's most extreme measure yet, and that is saying a lot," said Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project and lead counsel.
The ACLU and an allied group, Democracy Forward, asked the US District Court in Washington to bar the deportations -- arguing that the 1798 act was not intended for use in peacetime.
Judge James Boasberg has yet to rule on the substance of the case, but on Saturday he ordered a 14-day halt to any deportation under the new order at least until he has done so.
The White House has until Monday to file a motion if they want to overturn the pause, and failing that the next hearing will be on March 21, the court ruling said.

The United States and Israel are planning to move Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Africa as they reportedly reached out to at least three East African governments to discuss if they can use African territories for the same.&nbsp;

Trump's 'beautiful area' for Gazans? US, Israel eyeing three 'poor' African nations to resettle Palestinians

Mark Carney was officially sworn in as Canada&rsquo;s prime minister on Friday (March 14) during a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. In his first speech as leader, Carney said that his government would focus on safeguarding Canadian workers and their families from "unjustified foreign trade actions," referring to the tariffs recently imposed by US President Donald Trump.
<h2>'Negativity won&rsquo;t win a trade war'</h2>
Addressing the issue further, Carney said, "Negativity won&rsquo;t win a trade war," nor will it help lower grocery prices. He assured Canadians that his government is united and ready to act.

Immediately following his speech, Carney said that his new cabinet would convene for its first meeting.
<h2>Carney on US relations and trade</h2>
Responding to the question from the press, whether he intended to meet President Trump, Carney said that his initial foreign visits would be to France and the UK, prioritising discussions on security and trade diversification.
At present, he said, there are "no plans" for a meeting with Trump but told reporters that one would take place "at the appropriate moment."&nbsp;

Asked again about US-Canada relations Carney said he "looks forward" to speaking with President Trump. The prime minister said he understands Trump's agenda and the goal of getting rid of the "scourge" of fentanyl, which affects Canada as well. But he wants Trump to understand the importance the country puts on Canadian jobs and workers.
Carney was also asked about comments made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the ongoing G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Quebec. Rubio had claimed that "economically speaking, Canada would be better as the 51st state of the United States." Carney dismissed the suggestion outright, calling it "crazy."
<h2>Canada&rsquo;s future and upcoming elections</h2>
The prime minister was questioned about when Canadians could expect to vote, to which he responded that an election would be held &ldquo;before November.&rdquo;
"There will be other news in the coming days with respect to ensuring that we have a stronger mandate," he told reporters.

Carney was then asked if he intended to seek reassurances from European leaders that Canada would never become the "51st state" of the US, as President Trump had recently suggested. "We will never, in any shape or form, be part of the US," he asserted, reiterating his previous stance on the matter.
The prime minister listed the fundamental differences between Canada and the US, saying that the ceremony and government behind him were "nothing like America&rsquo;s system of government." He added that Canada "expects respect" from the US and its leadership.
Carney also made it clear that his government would respond to American economic pressure by strengthening Canada&rsquo;s economy rather than relying on external assistance. "We&rsquo;re masters in our home. We&rsquo;re in charge," he said.

<h2>Running for parliament</h2>
Carney also addressed where he would run in the upcoming election. As the first Canadian prime minister never to have served as a member of Parliament, he must secure a seat once the election is called. However, he declined to announce his chosen constituency, saying, "Today is not the day to announce that I will run."

In his first speech as leader, Carney said that his government would focus on safeguarding Canadian workers and their families from "unjustified foreign trade actions," referring to the tariffs recently imposed by US President Donald Trump. 'Negativity won’t win a trade war' Addressing the issue further, Carney said, "Negativity won’t win a trade war," nor will it help lower grocery prices. He assured Canadians that his government is united and ready to act. Also read: Who is Mark Carney? Carney on US relations and trade Responding to the question from the press, whether he intended to meet President Trump, Carney said that his initial foreign visits would be to France and the UK, prioritising discussions on security and trade diversification. At present, he said, there are "no plans" for a meeting with Trump but told reporters that one would take place "at the appropriate moment." The prime minister said he understands Trump's agenda and the goal of getting rid of the "scourge" of fentanyl, which affects Canada as well. But he wants Trump to understand the importance the country puts on Canadian jobs and workers. Carney was also asked about comments made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the ongoing G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Quebec. Rubio had claimed that "economically speaking, Canada would be better as the 51st state of the United States." Carney dismissed the suggestion outright, calling it "crazy." Canada’s future and upcoming elections The prime minister was questioned about when Canadians could expect to vote, to which he responded that an election would be held “before November.” "There will be other news in the coming days with respect to ensuring that we have a stronger mandate," he told reporters. "We will never, in any shape or form, be part of the US," he asserted, reiterating his previous stance on the matter. The prime minister listed the fundamental differences between Canada and the US, saying that the ceremony and government behind him were "nothing like America’s system of government." He added that Canada "expects respect" from the US and its leadership. Carney also made it clear that his government would respond to American economic pressure by strengthening Canada’s economy rather than relying on external assistance. "We’re masters in our home. We’re in charge," he said. However, he declined to announce his chosen constituency, saying, "Today is not the day to announce that I will run." (With inputs from agencies)

‘We will never be part of US’: New Canadian PM Mark Carney calls ‘51st state’ idea ‘crazy’ in first speech

Mark Carney officially took office as Canada&rsquo;s prime minister on Friday (March 14) after being sworn in during a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
<h2>Who is Mark Carney?</h2>
Carney made history in 2013 as the first non-British person to be appointed Governor of the Bank of England.
Before that, he led Canada&rsquo;s central bank, the Bank of Canada, where he played a key role in steering the country through the Great Recession. His leadership during that financial crisis gained him significant recognition, ultimately leading to his appointment in the UK.

Unlike most political leaders, Carney has never held an elected position. Despite this, he won a resounding victory in the race to succeed Justin Trudeau.
As prime minister, he immediately faces pressing challenges, including a growing trade dispute with Canada&rsquo;s largest trading partner, the United States. Although the next federal election is set for October, reports suggest that Carney might call an early vote.
<h2>Early life and education</h2>
Born in Fort Smith, a remote town in Canada&rsquo;s Northwest Territories, Carney has extensive international experience. He worked for Goldman Sachs in major financial hubs such as New York, London, and Tokyo. He attended Harvard University on a scholarship, where he played ice hockey, before earning a PhD in economics from Oxford University in 1995.

His transition from the private sector to public service began in 2003 when he joined the Bank of Canada as a deputy governor. He later served as a senior associate deputy minister at the Department of Finance before being appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada in 2007.
Just months later, global markets crashed, slipping Canada into a deep recession. His leadership at the central bank was widely praised for helping the country weather the crisis better than many others.
<h2>The man tasked with handling the 'crisis' called Trump</h2>
Carney&rsquo;s time in finance also gave him considerable experience dealing with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a>, who has imposed steep tariffs on Canada since returning to office in January. The US president has even suggested that America should annex Canada.

For the second time in under four months, the US government is on the brink of a shutdown as discussions between Republicans and Democrats continue in Congress.
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed a temporary spending bill to fund the government until 30 September. The bill has now moved to the Senate, which must approve it before it reaches President Donald Trump&rsquo;s desk. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill on Friday morning.

Here&rsquo;s what you need to know about a possible government shutdown, including when it might happen and how it could impact you.
<h2>When is the government shutdown deadline?</h2>
The current funding expires on Friday night. If a new spending bill is not passed and signed by President Trump before 11:59 pm ET on Friday, a shutdown will begin at 12:01 am ET on Saturday.
<h2>What happens during a government shutdown?</h2>
During a shutdown, essential government functions continue, but nonessential operations are put on hold. For example, the Department of Energy will continue maintaining nuclear reactors, and military and border security functions will remain active.

Federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and DEA, will remain operational. Prison staff, the Secret Service, and the Coast Guard will also continue working.
Federal employees stop receiving pay, with many being temporarily suspended until funding is restored. The extent of the shutdown's impact depends on how long it lasts. A brief shutdown over a weekend may have minimal effects, but a prolonged one could disrupt public services and the economy.
<h2>Why would the government shut down?</h2>
The Republican-led House narrowly passed a spending bill to fund the government through 30 September. However, in the Senate, Republicans need 60 votes to pass the bill but control only 53 seats. This means they require support from some Democrats, and it remains uncertain whether they will secure enough votes.

<h2>Which services could be affected?</h2>
Federal agencies providing public services may experience delays. Applying for a Social Security card, for instance, could take longer. In previous shutdowns, food safety and environmental inspections were postponed. The US Department of Agriculture&rsquo;s nutrition programmes, which assist millions, would likely operate with minimal staff. Additionally, new loans for small farmers may be put on hold.
<h2>How many federal employees will be affected?</h2>
As many as 900,000 federal workers could be temporarily discharged, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center. This number excludes active-duty military personnel and US Postal Service employees.
<h2>Who doesn&rsquo;t get paid during a shutdown?</h2>
Most federal employees, both essential and nonessential, will not receive pay during a shutdown. However, a 2019 law ensures that they receive back pay once the shutdown ends. Private contractors working with federal agencies are not guaranteed back pay.
<h2>Will Social Security and Medicare be affected?</h2>
Retirement and disability benefits will continue to be issued without interruption. However, some delays in processing may occur. Medicare benefits will also proceed as usual.
<h2>Will national parks remain open?</h2>
National parks, monuments, and other sites will close, with rangers furloughed and facilities shut down. In previous shutdowns, some states temporarily funded park operations to keep them running.

<h2>How will transportation be affected?</h2>
Airport security screeners and air traffic controllers will continue working. However, new hires and certain infrastructure projects could face delays. Absenteeism among staff, as seen in past shutdowns, may affect airport operations.
As the Friday deadline approaches, it remains uncertain whether Congress can prevent another government shutdown.

US government shutdown looms: What it is, who it affects, and how it could impact millions

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has dismissed claims that Russia requested the exclusion of US presidential special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, from diplomatic talks due to his pro-Ukrainian stance.
When asked about reports suggesting that Moscow sought to have Kellogg removed from negotiations, Peskov said, "No, I cannot confirm [information on Kellogg's exclusion at Russia's request]. It's their [US] decision whom to appoint. No, I cannot confirm this at all."

His comments follow reports that Kellogg was left out of high-level discussions at Russia's request. According to NBC News, the former US general and close ally of Donald Trump was not present at two key summits in Saudi Arabia, one involving Russian officials and another with Ukrainian representatives, despite these meetings falling within his remit.
A senior Russian official, speaking to NBC News, claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin viewed Kellogg as too supportive of Ukraine. "Kellogg is a former American general, too close to Ukraine. Not our kind of person, not of the calibre we are looking for," the official reportedly said.
A US official also confirmed to NBC News that Russia did not want Kellogg involved in the discussions.

Kellogg, 80, who previously served as Vice President Mike Pence&rsquo;s national security adviser, was notably absent when Trump&rsquo;s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, travelled to Moscow on 11 February. Witkoff, a New York real estate developer and long-time Trump associate, spent three and a half hours in a closed-door meeting with Putin.
While the details of their conversation remain undisclosed, Witkoff later described the meeting as a &ldquo;trust-building&rdquo; exercise in an interview with CBS News. He revealed that he was the sole US representative in attendance and had carried a message from Trump to Putin. He also stated that Putin had given him something to relay back to the former president but did not disclose specifics.

<h2>Kellogg left off the US delegation list</h2>
On 13 February, Trump unveiled a list of diplomats set to engage in talks with Russia. The team, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, included CIA Director John Ratcliffe, national security adviser Michael Waltz, and Witkoff. Kellogg&rsquo;s name was absent.
When questioned about whether Russia had specifically asked for Kellogg&rsquo;s exclusion, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova refrained from confirming or denying the claim, instead saying that it was up to the US to &ldquo;fix their delegation&rdquo; and that Russia had &ldquo;great experience of dealing with different envoys.&rdquo;
<h2>US-Ukraine tensions and ceasefire agreement</h2>
Relations between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have soured in recent weeks, reaching a breaking point after their heated Oval Office exchange on 28 February. Following the dispute, the US temporarily halted intelligence sharing and security assistance to Ukraine.

The freeze was lifted on Tuesday after Ukrainian officials, in a meeting with Rubio&rsquo;s delegation in Saudi Arabia, agreed to a 30-day interim ceasefire proposal. Kellogg was again absent from these discussions.
Shortly after Trump sent Witkoff back to Russia on Thursday, Putin addressed the situation, saying at a press conference that he agreed &ldquo;with the proposals to stop the hostilities&rdquo; but noted that some matters still required discussion. The prestigious Johns Hopkins University said Thursday it is being forced to lay off more than 2,000 employees in the aftermath of the Trump administration's massive reduction in foreign aid funding.
"This is a difficult day for our entire community. The termination of more than $800 million in USAID funding is now forcing us to wind down critical work here in Baltimore and internationally," the school, a leading institution of scientific research, said in a statement.
Hopkins, in Maryland's largest city an hour's drive north of the US capital, is eliminating more than 2,000 positions -- 1,975 in projects across 44 countries and 247 jobs in the United States.
The cuts impact several key programs, including the university's medical school and school of public health, and Jhpiego, a global health non-profit organization founded at the university more than 50 years ago and which works to improve health in countries worldwide.
"Johns Hopkins is immensely proud of the work done by our colleagues in Jhpiego, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the School of Medicine to care for mothers and infants, fight disease, provide clean drinking water, and advance countless other critical, life-saving efforts around the world," the university said.
The cuts make Johns Hopkins one of the universities most deeply impacted by the slash of federal funding for research.&nbsp;
The university receives roughly $1 billion annually in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is currently running 600 clinical trials, according to The New York Times, adding that Hopkins is one of the plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit challenging such cuts.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID), the largest funding agency for Jhpiego, distributes humanitarian aid around the world, with health and emergency programs in around 120 countries.
US President Donald Trump, who is dismantling the humanitarian agency, signed an executive order in January demanding a freeze on all US foreign aid to allow time to assess overseas expenses. Critics warn that slashing USAID work will affect millions of people.

Johns Hopkins University ends 2,000 positions after Trump administration's cuts in foreign aid funding

US President Donald Trump on Thursday (March 13) asked the US Supreme Court to allow his administration's attempt to restrict birthright citizenship.
Trump's executive order barred a child born in the US to have the country's citizenship if not at least one of the parents is a permanent US citizen. It further blocked federal agencies from issuing or recognising documentation that prove US citizenship for children born to unauthorised immigrants and also to those having a temporary immigrant status in America.
Sarah Harris, the justice department&rsquo;s acting solicitor general, filed a petition to the US apex court, asking it to restrict orders by district courts of three states that blocked Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship.&nbsp;

The court filing has called the Trump administration's request &ldquo;modest&rdquo;, asking it to &lsquo;restrict the scope&rsquo; of multiple preliminary injunctions that &lsquo;purport to cover every person in the country,&rsquo; limiting those injunctions to parties actually within the courts&rsquo; power.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Universal injunctions have reached epidemic proportions since the start of the current administration,&rdquo; Sarah said, The Guardian reported.&nbsp;

She added: "That sharp rise in universal injunctions stops the executive branch from performing its constitutional functions before any courts fully examine the merits of those actions, and threatens to swamp this court&rsquo;s emergency docket."
The court filing comes after Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office on January 20. The order was part of the US president's crackdown on immigration.&nbsp;

‘Restrict the scope’: Donald Trump asks SC to allow order against birthright citizenship

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a> was handed a pre-written sales pitch by Elon Musk during a Tesla-buying event at the White House on Tuesday, a move widely seen as an effort to promote the electric car company amid growing backlash against Musk&rsquo;s role in a controversial government restructuring.
<h2>'They gave me notes'</h2>
Photographers captured Trump holding note cards detailing the price and specifications of various Tesla models as he inspected the vehicles on display. The president openly admitted the words were not his own. &ldquo;They gave me notes,&rdquo; he said, shuffling through the papers before stepping into one of the cars.

Photos of the document revealed phrases such as &ldquo;SAFEST car,&rdquo; &ldquo;state of the art,&rdquo; and &ldquo;affordable,&rdquo; suggesting Musk had provided Trump with a script to bolster Tesla&rsquo;s image.
The publicity stunt, which critics likened to an unpaid "Tesla advert," followed a sharp 15% drop in Tesla&rsquo;s stock on Monday, the steepest decline in five years. The plunge has been largely attributed to Musk&rsquo;s ties to Trump and the controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
<h2>Musk is &lsquo;putting it on the line&rsquo;&nbsp;in order to help our nation: Trump</h2>
Trump, hoping to demonstrate support for his billionaire ally, praised Musk as a &ldquo;truly great American.&rdquo; He appeared unconcerned about using his position to promote Tesla, writing on Truth Social, &ldquo;Elon Musk is &lsquo;putting it on the line&rsquo; in order to help our Nation, and he is doing a FANTASTIC JOB!&rdquo;

He went on to accuse political opponents of unfairly targeting Musk and Tesla. &ldquo;But the Radical Left Lunatics, as they often do, are trying to illegally and collusively boycott Tesla, one of the World&rsquo;s great automakers, and Elon&rsquo;s &lsquo;baby,&rsquo; in order to attack and do harm to Elon, and everything he stands for.&rdquo;
While Trump ultimately did not follow the script word for word, he enthusiastically took on the role of car salesman, sitting behind the wheel of a Tesla as he praised its features.
<h2>Trump's tariffs' effect on Tesla</h2>
However, despite his promotional efforts, Trump&rsquo;s policies have so far hindered electric vehicle sales. He revoked a 2021 order by former president Joe Biden that aimed for half of all car sales to be electric by 2030 and froze unspent government funds for EV charging stations.

Additionally, Trump&rsquo;s tariff policies could negatively impact Tesla. In January, Tesla&rsquo;s chief financial officer, Vaibhav Taneja, warned that tariffs on parts sourced from Canada and Mexico could affect the company&rsquo;s profitability.
Beyond Tesla, Musk&rsquo;s other ventures have also faced setbacks. SpaceX has suffered two consecutive failures in launching its Starship rocket, while its social media platform, X, experienced a widespread outage on Monday.

‘Safest, state-of-the-art, affordable’: Did Elon Musk hand Trump a ‘Tesla ad’ script amid stock plunge?

In a retaliatory action, the European Union has announced new tariffs on $28.3 billion worth of US products in response to America&rsquo;s latest metal tariffs.
The decision was made on Wednesday, just hours after the US imposed a 25% tax on steel and aluminum imports, increasing tensions between the two sides. The EU will now consult its member countries, with the new tariffs expected to take effect by mid-April.

<h2>EU condemns tariffs as 'harmful to businesses and consumers'</h2>
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticised the US decision, warning of its economic impact. &ldquo;We firmly believe that in a world fraught with geo-economic and political uncertainties, it is not in our common interest to burden our economies with such tariffs,&rdquo; she told reporters.
She further emphasised the negative consequences, saying, &ldquo;Tariffs are taxes. They are bad for business, and even worse for consumers&hellip; Jobs are at stake. Prices will go up. In Europe and in the United States&hellip; The countermeasures we take today are strong but proportionate.&rdquo;

<h2>What the EU&rsquo;s tariffs will target</h2>
The EU&rsquo;s response will be much stronger than its last trade fight with Trump in 2018 when the US imposed tariffs on about $7 billion of European metals.
This time, the EU will target US steel, aluminum, textiles, farm products, and household appliances. It will also bring back tariffs on products previously hit during past trade disputes, such as bourbon, boats, and motorbikes.
Meanwhile, Trump has announced new US tariffs, set to start in early April. These will focus on European goods, especially cars, as part of a response to EU trade policies, including its value-added tax.

<h2>Failed negotiations and history of trade disputes</h2>
EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic recently visited Washington to negotiate with senior US officials, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. He offered to lower tariffs on industrial goods, particularly cars, one of Trump&rsquo;s key demands, and increase Europe&rsquo;s imports of US liquefied natural gas and defence equipment.
However, after talks failed, Sefcovic voiced disappointment, saying, &ldquo;The disruption caused by tariffs is avoidable if the US administration accepts our extended hand and works with us to strike a deal. We are ready to negotiate.&rdquo;
The conflict between the US and EU over metal tariffs began in 2018 when Trump first imposed taxes on European steel and aluminum, claiming national security concerns. The EU rejected this argument and responded with tariffs on politically important American goods, such as Harley-Davidson motorcycles and Levi&rsquo;s jeans.

In 2021, both sides agreed to a temporary truce. The US eased some tariffs, replacing them with limits on metal imports, while the EU suspended its countermeasures.
Now, all those suspended tariffs, covering about $8 billion worth of US goods will return at the end of March. Some new tariffs that were never used before will also be introduced.

Trump defended the tech billionaire against &ldquo;Radical Left Lunatics&rdquo;, who are staging nationwide protests against Tesla as the CEO has been leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to slash government spending and jobs.

<h2>Tesla stock crashes amid protests</h2>
The electric car company&rsquo;s shares have significantly dropped by a third since Trump became president. In the last month, Tesla&rsquo;s stock suffered a loss of more than 28 per cent in its price and nearly 32 per cent since January 1.
Protests have been staged at multiple Tesla dealerships across the country, including at a Manhattan showroom, where six people were arrested on Saturday (Mar 8).

‘Putin’s useful idiots’: JD Vance’s cousin who fought in Ukraine slams Trump, VP for ‘ambushing’ Zelensky

President Donald Trump on Sunday (Mar 9) didn't rule out the possibility that the United States might enter a recession this year.&nbsp;
During an interview with Fox News, he was asked about his economic goals for the nation and a possible recession in 2025.&nbsp;
"I hate to predict things like that. There is a period of transition because what we're doing is very big. We're bringing wealth back to America," said Trump.&nbsp;
"That's a big thing. And there are always periods of...it takes a little time. It takes a little time, but I think it should be great for us,&rdquo; Trump added.
He was then asked whether or not he thought his tariffs on US imports would fuel inflation, he said: "You may get it. In the meantime, guess what? Interest rates are down."&nbsp;

A recession is a period of economic decline, typically defined as a decline in gross domestic product (GDP) for two or more consecutive quarters. Recessions are often accompanied by economic contraction, job losses, reduced consumer spending, business closures and reduced investment.&nbsp;
The US was briefly in recession in early 2020 as the Covid pandemic spread. Millions of people lost jobs.
Howard Lutnick, who is Trump's commerce secretary, was more definitive when asked Sunday about the possibility of a recession.&nbsp;
"Absolutely not," he told NBC when asked whether Americans should brace for a downturn.&nbsp;

<h2>US tariff war with Canada, Mexico and China&nbsp;</h2>
The US financial markets have been in turmoil amid Trump's tariff threats against Canada, Mexico, China and others.
The consumers are unsure what the year might bring even as global markets also plummeted.&nbsp;
However, it seems that the Trump administration is aware of a possible slump as it has insisted that while the economy will pass through a possibly bumpy "transition," things are headed in a positive direction.&nbsp;
During his address to Congress last Tuesday, Trump told Americans to expect "a little disturbance" because of the tariffs, while adding, "We're okay with that. It won't be much."&nbsp;

The US imposition of tariffs is likely to provoke retaliatory actions from other countries.&nbsp;
"The point is that if all parties respond with similar measures, the scale of the trade war will expand, leading to more serious consequences. As I mentioned earlier, it could trigger inflation and economic and trade crises, hindering economic growth," he said.&nbsp;

Imprisoned transgender women in the US have been forcibly moved to men prisons under US President Donald Trump's executive order. This, as per reports, have been done despite multiple court rulings blocking the policy, civil rights lawyers and incarcerated individuals report.
<h2>Trump's executive order on transgender women and men's prisons</h2>
The directive was issued by Trump on his first day in office. It orders the attorney general to ensure that "males are not detained in women's prisons or housed in women's detention centres" and blocks federal funding for gender-affirming medical care for those in custody.&nbsp;

However, Trump's order was swiftly challenged in court, with federal judges ruling that the US Bureau of Prisons (BOP) could not deny medical care or transfer trans women to men's facilities. One judge even warned that "irreparable harm will follow" if the order is enforced.
Despite these rulings, trans women not specifically named by the lawsuits have reportedly been transferred.&nbsp;
As per the report, Whitney, a 31-year-old trans woman, was recently moved to a men's facility. Prison records show her gender marker was changed from "female" to "male." Before her transfer, she expressed fear, calling herself a "pawn in others' political games."

Attorney Kara Janssen, who represents trans women in ongoing litigation, told she has received reports of other trans women being relocated to men's prisons or having their gender markers altered.&nbsp;
<h2>What's the rule?</h2>
Under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), prisons must assess the risk of sexual violence for LGBTQ+ individuals and consider their status when making housing decisions. Legal experts argue that Trump's broad directive violates this federal mandate.

"This is cruel and unnecessary," said Janssen, adding, "Our clients are desperate and scared."
Beyond forced transfers, attorneys say Trump's order has unleashed chaos, exacerbating the already harsh conditions trans people face behind bars. Internal memos obtained by The Guardian reveal that prison staff have been instructed to refer to trans inmates by their legal names and incorrect pronouns, prohibit gender-appropriate clothing, and revoke policies allowing trans women to be searched by female guards. Reports also suggest that some trans women have been forced to surrender personal underwear, including bras and boxers, and subjected to invasive searches by male officers.
Susan Beaty, a senior attorney for the California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice, described reports of male guards searching trans women in ways some inmates characterised as "groping." Beaty added that the administration's policies are "intentionally terrorizing and traumatizing incarcerated trans people".
"It is essentially sanctioning sexual assault in some instances," said Janssen. Some trans women have reported experiencing suicidal thoughts and nightmares due to the changes.

Maxar Technologies, one of the companies contracted by the US program that provided the imagery to Kyiv, confirmed the suspension, while saying there is "no change to the way we support our other customers nor their programs or contracts."
The suspension of intelligence sharing comes after Trump previously ordered a halt of key assistance to Kyiv.
With the suspension of Ukraine's access to the satellite imagery, the war-torn nation's battlefield loses are on the rise. To Ukraine&rsquo;s military battling Russian forces, American intelligence is as critical as military supplies. These intelligence briefings had provided Kyiv crucial early warnings of incoming attacks.

Soon after, Trump took to Truth Social with a stark message aimed at the Kremlin.
"Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely 'pounding' Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED," he wrote.
He followed up with an appeal to both sides: "To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!"

The historic document, which marked the United States&rsquo; separation from British rule, is nearly 250 years old and requires strict preservation measures.

Due to the document&rsquo;s fragile condition, some of Trump&rsquo;s aides were initially hesitant about the proposal. However, discussions have since shifted towards possibly displaying historical copies rather than the original.

'Alarming': Trump wanted 'original' US Declaration of Independence as Oval Office decoration. What is it?

Is Trump reining in Musk, finally? US President Donald Trump on Thursday (March 6) addressed mounting criticism over sweeping government cuts led by billionaire advisor Elon Musk, stressing that staff cuts should be carefully targeted.
In what could be seen as the first move to rein in the seemingly unlimited power accorded to Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Trump on Truth Social wrote: "We say the 'scalpel' rather than the 'hatchet'," while emphasising that department heads&mdash;not Musk&mdash;would ultimately control personnel decisions.

<h2>Trump-Musk at odds?</h2>
No, Trump and Musk are not at odds, if one goes by the tone of his Truth Social post.
At the outset, the US president supported DOGE and its chief. According to a recent AP report, Musk in private talks told lawmakers this week that the firings of thousands of federal workers, including veterans, are the responsibility of individual agencies, not him.

"DOGE has been an incredible success, and now that we have my Cabinet in place, I have instructed the Secretaries and Leadership to work with DOGE on Cost-Cutting measures and Staffing. As the Secretaries learn about, and understand, the people working for the various Departments, they can be very precise as to who will remain, and who will go," said Trump.

According to Politico, Trump also conveyed directly to his cabinet, with Musk in attendance, that while the DOGE chief can make recommendations, the ultimate authority lies with his officials.
<h2>Federal workforce in turmoil</h2>
As part of the administration&rsquo;s effort to streamline government operations, tens of thousands of federal workers have already been dismissed or face termination. Millions of employees received directives from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and Musk, demanding justification for their roles in bullet-pointed memos&mdash;or risk losing their jobs.

Meanwhile, Musk, facing a backlash from within his task force, admitted to missteps during a meeting with Republicans on Wednesday (March 5).
According to Politico, nearly a third of DOGE's staffers resigned by February, citing concerns that the drastic measures endangered national stability.
"We swore to serve the American people and uphold our oath to the Constitution across presidential administrations," 21 DOGE members wrote in a letter to White House Chief of Staff Susan Wiles, reported the AFP news agency. "However, it has become clear that we can no longer honour those commitments," they wrote.
