Trump wants 'fantastic' Elon Musk to stay around 'as long as possible' amid speculation of Tesla owner leaving DOGE

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> announced on Thursday (April 03) morning that his sweeping tariffs against nearly every country were now in force, declaring&nbsp;that "the operation is over!" But the US financial markets did not share his optimism, with stock futures plunging.
<h2>Trump claims the US economy will emerge stronger</h2>
Taking to Truth Social, Trump posted in all caps, "THE PROGNOSIS IS THAT THE PATIENT WILL BE FAR STRONGER, BIGGER, BETTER, AND MORE RESILIENT THAN EVER BEFORE. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!"
Despite his confidence, the S&amp;P 500 stock futures dropped by over 3.5%, and the Dow Jones was set to open nearly 1,300 points lower.
<h2>Tariffs hit nearly every US trading partner</h2>
As part of his so-called "<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/want-to-avoid-trumps-reciprocal-tariffs-trump-himself-has-a-simple-solution-for-world-leaders-8919111">Liberation Day</a>" on Wednesday, Trump introduced a baseline 10% tariff on all imports, with higher customised rates for specific countries. The only exceptions were nations already under sanctions and those previously hit with tariffs.
Speaking from the White House Rose Garden, Trump argued that the US had long been subject to unfair trade practices, claiming that America had been &ldquo;looted, pillaged, raped, and plundered&rdquo; by foreign nations. He insisted that his tariffs would restore American industry, ushering in a "<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/donald-trump-to-sign-executive-order-on-reciprocal-tariffs-to-usher-in-golden-age-of-america-8919067">golden age of America</a>."
<h2>Some tariffs go as high as 50%</h2>
Under the new rules:
<ul>
<li>A 10% tax applies to all imported goods</li>
<li>Some nations face tariffs as high as 50%</li>
<li>Canada and Mexico remain exempt (as they have already been subject to 25% tariffs since Trump's return to office)</li>
</ul>

Trump declares ‘OPERATION IS OVER’ as tariffs hit nearly every country; claims ‘PATIENT IS HEALING’ while stocks plunge

President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> has imposed at least 10% tariffs on nearly every country in the world, including even two uninhabited islands: the Heard and McDonald Islands near Antarctica, home only to seals and penguins. However, one country has been noticeably left off the list: Russia.
<h2>Why did Russia avoid Trump&rsquo;s tariffs?</h2>
When asked why Russia was exempt, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that US sanctions already "preclude any meaningful trade" between the two nations, Axios reported.

Step one: &lsquo;Carefully examining&rsquo; the impact</a>
However, this isn&rsquo;t entirely true. While trade between the US and Russia has dropped significantly, from $35 billion in 2021 to just $3.5 billion last year, the US still trades more with Russia than with countries like Mauritius or Brunei, both of which did make the tariff list.
Russia has reportedly asked Trump to lift some sanctions as part of US-brokered ceasefire talks over Ukraine, but so far, the US has not offered any concrete response. Instead, Trump recently threatened secondary tariffs on Russian oil and expressed frustration with Vladimir Putin, saying he was "very angry" and "pissed off" over the Russian leader&rsquo;s comments about Ukraine&rsquo;s President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Leavitt added that Russia could still face "additional strong sanctions", though no further details were provided.
<h2>Who else avoided Trump&rsquo;s tariffs?</h2>
A few other nations were also spared from Trump&rsquo;s sweeping trade penalties:
Cuba, Belarus, and North Korea: Leavitt explained that these countries were left out because they are already heavily sanctioned by the US.
Canada and Mexico: These two major economies also escaped new tariffs, but only because Trump had already slapped them with 25% tariffs previously.
Meanwhile, Ukraine was not exempt, despite the ongoing war. Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on Ukrainian imports, adding to the country&rsquo;s struggles.

Trump’s new tariffs hit Ukraine, penguins, and almost every country, but not Russia. Here’s why

A video has surfaced on social media showing a YouTuber interviewing North Korean students. The female students can be seen praising their leader, Kim Jong Un and saying how things have gotten better under him. YouTuber Mike Okay asks them their views on the countryside, to which one of the girls replies, "Under the wise leadership of our fatherly Marshal Kim Jong Un, our countryside has been changing."
Okay then asks her how is it changing, and she says, "New houses were built, also gymnasium, park and swimming pool."
Social media users were quick to point out how important it seemed to be for the girls to say the correct thing and that the words sounded rehearsed. A user commented on Reddit, "No pressure. One wrong word and your whole family gets sent to a labour camp."

Several experts have raised concerns that free speech is under threat in the United States. A green card holder was recently arrested and sent to a Louisiana detention facility for protesting against Israel&rsquo;s conduct of the war in Gaza. The White House stated that the administration disapproves of his views on Middle East politics.
R&uuml;meysa &Ouml;zt&uuml;rk, a PhD student at Tufts, was taken into custody by masked men for allegedly being tied to activities supporting Hamas.
An entire news agency, Associated Press, was banned from the White House press room for not changing their words to "Gulf of America" from "Gulf of Mexico."

Speaking to the Indian news agency PTI, an official said the commerce ministry is analysing the impact of the reciprocal tariffs or import duties imposed by the US.
"It is a mixed bag and not a setback for India...The ministry is analysing the impact of the announced tariffs," the official said.
He also said there is a provision that if India would address the concerns of the US, the Trump administration can consider reducing the duties.
As per reports, the universal 10 per cent tariffs will come into effect on all imports into the US from April 5 and the remaining 16 per cent from April 10.

Trump tariffs 'not a setback' for India: Official calls it a mixed bag as US prez imposes 26 per cent tariffs on India

Donald Trump is facing mocking after he vowed he would put tariffs on Fentanyl &mdash; an illegal drug, in a bizarre rant.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump, while slamming Republicans who he claimed were not supportive enough of his trade policy, said he would tariff "the value of this horrible and deadly drug in order to make it more costly to distribute and buy".
The bizarre rant came just before Trump unveiled a raft of tariffs against enemy and ally nations alike, which economists say might plunge the world into a new global recession.

Trump wants to tariff 'illegal drug' Fentanyl, internet labels him 'pathetic' and questions 'Do drug dealers pay tariffs usually?'

United States President Donald Trump announced far-reaching new tariffs on nearly all American trading partners on Wednesday &mdash; a 34% tax on imports from China, 20% on the European Union and 26% in India among others. 'I'm sorry to say that...' Trump's justification after announcing sweeping tariffs, triggering global trade war

US President Donald Trump has launched what he calls a "liberation day" event. He announced an executive order that will introduce new "retaliatory tariffs" aimed at countries imposing trade barriers on the United States.
Trump said that 2 April 2025 would be remembered as the day American industry was revived. &ldquo;For decades our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations near and far,&rdquo; he said, blaming both allies and adversaries for harming US economic interests.

Elon Musk has reacted to a Politico report that claimed that US President Donald Trump has reportedly told his inner circle and Cabinet members that Elon Musk will be stepping back from his current position as governing partner, ubiquitous cheerleader and Washington hatchet man in the coming weeks.
"Yeah, fake news," wrote Musk, responding to a post on X by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who said, "This 'scoop' is garbage."

While Trump is pleased with Musk&rsquo;s work and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), both men have decided that Musk would return to his businesses and take on a supporting role, the report added citing three Trump insiders.
Musk&rsquo;s retreat comes amid criticism from Trump administration officials and outside allies, who have increasingly viewed the billionaire as a political liability.

This also highlights a stark shift in the Trump-Musk relationship from a month earlier, when allies were predicting that Musk was &ldquo;here to stay&rdquo; and Trump would move past the 130-day time limit.

Musk&rsquo;s &ldquo;special government employee&rdquo; status of 130 days, which temporarily exempted him from some ethics and conflict-of-interest rules, is expected to expire in late May or early June.

Musk reacts to report claiming Trump said X boss ‘will be stepping back’; White House calls it ‘garbage’

US President Donald Trump is set to announce reciprocal tariffs on a host of nations on Wednesday (Apr 2) at a White House event. Trump has deemed the day as &ldquo;Liberation Day&rdquo; to &ldquo;make America wealthy again.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Here are some of the biggest questions about what Trump has planned.
<h2>Which countries will be affected by Trump&rsquo;s tariffs?</h2>
In March, Treasury Department Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that the administration would target 15 per cent of countries, which are the biggest trade allies of the US. Calling them &lsquo;the Dirty 15&rsquo;, Bessent did not specify their names.

According to a CNBC analysis based on countries with highest goods trade deficits with the US, it will likely include China, Canada, Mexico, the European Union, India, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Austria, Sweden, Ireland, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.
<h2>How will the tariff rates be calculated?</h2>
Bessent earlier said that the administration would not only consider tariffs but also a wide range of trade policies and economic barriers imposed by each nation to calculate its reciprocal tariff rate.
He added that if a country doesn&rsquo;t change its policies they &ldquo;will put up the tariff wall to protect our economy, protect our workers, and protect our industries.&rdquo;

If Trump imposes a flat universal tariff, the administration will have to decide whether to impose the new levies as additional tariffs to the existing ones or replace them.
Trump has already imposed new taxes on goods from Canada, Mexico and China, along with all steel and aluminium imports.
<h2>Why is Trump imposing tariffs?</h2>
Trump has cited a wide range of reasons to defend his sweeping tariffs on foreign goods. He views tariffs as a flexible economic tool, using them to pressure trade partners and support US industries.

The Trump administration says that tariffs will put pressure on Canada, Mexico, and China to reduce illegal migration and drug trafficking into the US. In addition, it would protect US industries like steel, aluminium, and copper, which are essential for national security.&nbsp;
The US president also believes that tariffs on foreign vehicles will support domestic car manufacturers. He further introduced the &ldquo;reciprocal&rdquo; tariffs to prevent other countries from retaliating and imposing higher levies on US goods.
Trump also aims to generate revenue through tariffs that will help fund tax cuts, government spending, and even balance the federal budget.

<h2>What impact will tariffs have on the economy?</h2>
The tariffs imposed by Trump could result in huge costs for businesses and consumers. Higher levies on foreign food, energy and auto parts could lead to higher costs for Americans amid high inflation.
According to economists at Goldman Sachs, Trump&rsquo;s tariffs could boost inflation, slow the economy and raise the unemployment rate.

As Donald Trump's tariffs kick in on April 2, a speech by former US president Ronald Reagan has resurfaced on the internet. The 40th president of the United States warned of &nbsp;&ldquo;trade wars&ldquo; and asked people to beware of &ldquo;demogogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends&rdquo; in a radio speech he made nearly 40 years ago
The speech by Reagan focusses on Free and Fair Trade and Canadian elections. Reagan stated in the speech that "the way to prosperity for all nations is rejecting protectionist legislation and promoting fair and free competition."
Reagan said that while tariffs might look appealing at first, they are the reason for economic devastation.
"At first, when someone says let's impose tariffs on foreign imports, it looks like they are doing a patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. Sometimes, for a short while, it works, but only for a short time," Reagan said in the speech.

Both Ukraine and Russia complained to the United States about striking each other's energy sites on Tuesday, with Kyiv calling on Washington to strengthen sanctions on Moscow for "violating" agreements made in Saudi Arabia.&nbsp;
Each side has accused the other of breaking a supposed deal to stop firing on energy sites, though a formal agreement has not been put in place and what commitments each side has undertaken remain unclear.

Following separate meetings with US officials, the White House said both Ukraine and Russia had "agreed to develop measures for implementing" an "agreement to ban strikes against energy facilities of Russia and Ukraine".
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his defence minister, Rustem Umerov, was in touch with US officials.
"We have passed on all the necessary information about Russian violations in the energy sector," Zelensky said in his daily evening address.&nbsp;
He earlier called on Washington to strengthen sanctions on Russia as a response.&nbsp;
"I believe we have come to the point of increasing the sanctions impact, because I believe that the Russians are violating what they have promised America. At least what America has told us, and publicly," Zelensky said at a press conference in Kyiv.&nbsp;
"And we very much hope that President (Donald) Trump has all these appropriate tools to increase the sanctions pressure on the Russian side."

He said Ukraine remains "ready" for an unconditional ceasefire with Russia.&nbsp;
In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier discussed allegations of Ukrainian "violations" in a private meeting of top security officials on Tuesday.
Moscow also said it had handed its complaints to Washington.&nbsp;
<h2>'We passed a list'&nbsp;</h2>
"We passed a list of violations... to the US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after the meeting.
"I have passed this list to the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio," he added.
Russia's defence ministry earlier accused Kyiv of striking Russian energy sites in the Russian region of Belgorod and the partially Moscow-controlled Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia.
The allegations come hours after Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said tens of thousands were left without power in the southern Kherson region by a Russian strike.
Local authorities later said power supplies had been restored.
Russia has launched systematic aerial attacks on Ukrainian power plants and grid since invading in February 2022.
Putin last month rejected a joint US-Ukrainian proposal for an unconditional and full ceasefire.
Sybiga also said Kyiv and Washington were holding fresh talks on a minerals agreement that would give the United States access to Ukrainian natural resources in return for more support.
The two countries had planned to sign a deal in February on extracting Ukraine's strategically important minerals, until a spectacular televised White House clash between Trump and Zelensky derailed the agreement.
Trump on Sunday warned Zelensky he would have "big problems" if Kyiv rejected the latest US proposal, details of which have not been published by either side.

Donald Trump's second term in the White House suffered a significant setback on Tuesday (Apr 1) as voters in Wisconsin rejected his preferred candidate for the state's Supreme Court. US President Donald Trump's second term has already seen a lot of deportations. In one such case, Kilmer Abrego-Garcia was erroneously deported to El Salvador. The man was deported in one of the three high-profile deportation flights to El Salvador in March. The administration said he was a member of the MS-13 gang, which is an international criminal group. In contrast, the judge, in his ruling, prohibited his removal from his home country.
Abrego-Garcia's lawyers have demanded his return to the United States. A complaint filed by his family mentions that his 5-year-old son and wife are both US citizens residing in Maryland. It also noted that he was driving with his son seated in the backseat when ICE officers stopped his car and handcuffed him.
However, the Trump administration refrained from bringing him back from El Salvador, saying they did not have the legal authority to expedite the process of return.
US Department of Homeland Security, spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin ,wrote on X, "The media&rsquo;s favorite &ldquo;Maryland father&rdquo; is actually a member of the brutal MS-13 gang in our country illegally. In fact, DHS intelligence reports show that he is involved in human trafficking."

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a> is set to introduce a new wave of "Liberation Day" tariffs, which will take effect immediately after his announcement on Wednesday (April 02), White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed.
"My understanding is that the tariff announcement will come tomorrow, they will be effective immediately," Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday, adding that she had just spoken to Trump about the matter.
So, what do these tariffs mean, who actually pays for them, and how could they affect consumers? Here&rsquo;s a closer look.
<h2>How tariffs work and who pays for them?</h2>
A tariff is a government-imposed tax on goods imported from other countries. While these levies are meant to make foreign products less competitive, the reality is that the costs often get passed along the supply chain.
Contrary to popular belief, tariffs are not paid by foreign governments. Instead, US-based importers bear the direct financial burden. However, the impact doesn&rsquo;t stop there:
<ul>
<li>Consumers in the US often face higher prices as businesses raise costs to cover the tariffs.</li>
<li>Retailers and manufacturers using imported materials may see rising production expenses, forcing them to either absorb the losses or increase prices.</li>
<li>Foreign suppliers may cut their prices to stay competitive, reducing their profits.</li>
<li>Some governments respond by devaluing their currencies or offering tax rebates to counterbalance the tariffs, as China has done previously.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Trump&rsquo;s strategy: What is he trying to achieve?</h2>
Trump views tariffs as a flexible economic tool, using them to pressure trade partners and support US industries. His administration argues that these tariffs will:
<ul>
<li>Put pressure on Canada, Mexico, and China to reduce illegal migration and drug trafficking into the US.</li>
<li>Protect key industries, such as steel, aluminium, and copper, which are vital to national security.</li>
<li>Support domestic car manufacturers by imposing higher import duties on foreign vehicles.</li>
<li>Level the playing field by introducing "reciprocal" tariffs, preventing other countries from imposing higher taxes on American exports.</li>
<li>Generate significant revenue, which Trump claims will help fund tax cuts, government spending, and even balance the federal budget.</li>
</ul>
<h2>How will these tariffs impact consumer prices?</h2>
Since the tariffs will target major trading partners, the costs of everyday goods could rise.
Food prices &ndash; Fresh produce from Mexico, such as avocados, tomatoes, and strawberries, may become more expensive within weeks.
Alcohol and beverages &ndash; Beer, tequila, and other spirits could see significant price hikes, as Mexico supplies a large share of US agricultural imports.
Electronics and automobiles &ndash; Prices may stay steady for a while due to existing inventory, but if tariffs remain in place, expect higher costs on cars and tech products.
Despite warnings from economists and trade experts, Trump has played down concerns about price hikes, telling Congress, "There will be a little disturbance, but we are OK with that. It won&rsquo;t be much."
However, history suggests that American businesses and consumers will ultimately bear the cost, just as they did during his first term.

'To take effect immediately': What are Trump's reciprocal tariffs, and who pays them? Here's your complete guide

With US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s April 2 deadline for imposing reciprocal tariffs approaching, businesses and policymakers remain uncertain about how they will be applied. While the tariffs aim to address America&rsquo;s trade deficit, Washington is simultaneously negotiating a new trade deal with India, adding further complexity to the situation.
The impact on Indian businesses will depend on whether the tariffs are imposed at the product, sector, or country level. The US has been India&rsquo;s largest trading partner from 2021-22 to 2023-24, accounting for 18% of India&rsquo;s total exports, 6.22% of imports, and 10.73% of bilateral trade.

<h2>Key sectors facing higher tariffs</h2>
India exports products from 30 different sectors to the US, including six in agriculture and 24 in industry. If sector-wide tariffs are imposed, the following goods are expected to be affected:
Alcohol, Wines, and Spirits &ndash; The highest tariff hike of 122.10% will be applied, though exports in this category total only $19.2 million.
Dairy Products &ndash; Exports worth $181.49 million will be hit by a 38.23% tariff, making Indian ghee, butter, and milk powder more expensive and reducing market share.

Fish, Meat, and Processed Seafood &ndash; A 27.83% tariff hike will impact $2.58 billion in exports, with shrimp exports suffering the most.
Live Animals and Animal Products &ndash; A 27.75% tariff will affect exports valued at $10.31 million.
Processed Food, Sugar, and Cocoa &ndash; With $1.03 billion in exports, these products will face a 24.99% tariff, making Indian snacks and confectionery costlier in the US.

Footwear &ndash; This sector will see a 15.56% tariff increase.
Diamonds, Gold, and Silver &ndash; Exports worth $11.88 billion will face a 13.32% tariff hike, potentially making Indian jewellery less competitive.
Pharmaceuticals &ndash; A 10.90% tariff differential will push up prices for generic medicines and speciality drugs.
Edible Oils &ndash; Coconut and mustard oil will become more expensive with a 10.67% tariff.
<h2>Sectors unaffected</h2>
Certain industries, including ores, minerals, petroleum, and garments, will not see any new tariffs under the proposed plan.

Price hikes incoming! Trump’s reciprocal tariffs on India hit tomorrow: Here’s how your groceries will be affected

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> on Tuesday (April 01) said that India is planning to reduce tariffs on American products significantly, one day before he imposes reciprocal tariffs, a day he dubbed as 'Liberation Day' for America.
Speaking at a press conference, he said "I think I heard that India just a little while ago is going to be dropping its tariffs very substantially, and I said why didn't somebody do this a long time ago."
Trump&rsquo;s statement comes just before Washington is set to introduce reciprocal tariffs on April 2. The White House has also criticised India, listing it among nations that impose excessive charges, which it says unfairly hurt US exporters.

<h2>White House condemns India's tariffs</h2>
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that India levies a 100 per cent tariff on American agricultural goods, making it "virtually impossible" for US exports to enter certain markets.
&ldquo;These countries have been ripping off our nation for far too long,&rdquo; Leavitt said. She accused these nations of showing disregard for American workers.
&ldquo;You have 100% tariff from India on American agricultural products,&rdquo; she said.
Leavitt added that "it&rsquo;s time for reciprocity," and declared that President Trump "is going to make historic changes, and that will happen on Wednesday."

In addition to India, the White House also pointed to high tariff rates imposed by the European Union, Japan, and Canada, indicating they may also be targeted under the upcoming tariff measures. &ldquo;This makes it virtually impossible for American products to be imported into these markets,&rdquo; Leavitt explained.
<h2>&lsquo;Liberation Day&rsquo; and new tariff plan</h2>
President Trump is set to announce his new tariff policy on April 2 in the Rose Garden, calling it "Liberation Day." This will be his first major economic announcement of his second term.
Leavitt confirmed that the entire cabinet will be present for the event but did not disclose details of the plan, noting that various proposals have been under discussion in recent weeks.
"Wednesday, it will be Libration Day in America, as President Trump has so proudly dubbed it," Leavitt said.

A senior Hamas official has called on supporters worldwide to take up arms in response to US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump's</a> proposal to relocate over two million Gazans to neighbouring countries, including Egypt and Jordan.
"In the face of this sinister plan, one that combines massacres with starvation, anyone who can bear arms, anywhere in the world, must take action," Sami Abu Zuhri said in a statement on Monday.
"Do not withhold an explosive, a bullet, a knife, or a stone. Let everyone break their silence," he added.

Abu Zuhri&rsquo;s statement follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu&rsquo;s offer to allow Hamas leaders to leave Gaza, provided the group disarms as the war nears its final stages. While Hamas has shown openness to yielding control over Gaza&rsquo;s administration, it insists that its weapons remain a "red line".
Netanyahu confirmed that Israel was working to implement Trump&rsquo;s plan to displace Gazans to other countries. "After the war, Israel will maintain overall security in Gaza and enable the implementation of the Trump plan," Netanyahu said, referring to what had initially been described as a "voluntary migration plan" for all 2.4 million people in the Palestinian territory.

In mid-March, Trump appeared to backtrack, saying, "Nobody's expelling any Palestinians," in comments at the White House. These remarks were welcomed by Egypt, Jordan, and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
Since then, Arab nations have put forward an alternative plan for rebuilding Gaza without displacing its residents.

A senior Hamas official has called on supporters worldwide to take up arms in response to US President Donald Trump's proposal to relocate over two million Gazans to neighbouring countries, including Egypt and Jordan. Netanyahu confirmed that Israel was working to implement Trump’s plan to displace Gazans to other countries. "After the war, Israel will maintain overall security in Gaza and enable the implementation of the Trump plan," Netanyahu said, referring to what had initially been described as a "voluntary migration plan" for all 2.4 million people in the Palestinian territory. US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a> has suggested he might consider pursuing a third term in office, despite the US Constitution barring it under the 22nd Amendment. In a phone interview with NBC News on Sunday morning, Trump said there were ways this could happen and made clear he was &ldquo;not joking&rdquo;.
&ldquo;A lot of people want me to do it,&rdquo; Trump said, referring to support from his allies. &ldquo;But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it&rsquo;s very early in the administration,&rdquo; he said.

When asked directly if he wanted a third term, he replied, &ldquo;I like working,&rdquo; before stressing again, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not joking. But I&rsquo;m not &mdash; it is far too early to think about it.&rdquo;
Trump confirmed that he had heard of potential ways to seek a third term. &ldquo;There are methods by which you could do it,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;
One option discussed was having Vice President JD Vance run for president and later step aside to hand over the role to Trump. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s one,&rdquo; Trump admitted.
&ldquo;But there are others too,&rdquo; he added, though he declined to share any further details, simply replying &ldquo;no&rdquo; when asked to elaborate.

Changing the Constitution to allow a third term would require considerable political effort, needing a two-thirds majority in Congress or agreement from two-thirds of the states to call a constitutional convention. Any changes would then need to be approved by three-quarters of the states.
Trump also referred to his high poll numbers, saying, &ldquo;A lot of people would like me to&rdquo; continue as president for a third term.
Although Trump has previously made similar comments, many Republicans have brushed them off as jokes or attempts to provoke critics. However, Tennessee Republican Representative Andy Ogles has proposed a resolution to remove the current two-term limit, potentially allowing Trump to seek another term in office.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on Sunday (March 30) that Tehran has refused to hold direct talks with the United States over its nuclear programme. This marks the country's first public response to a letter sent by US President Donald Trump to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iran-supreme-leader-khamenei-warns-us-president-donald-trump-against-making-unwise-threats-says-tehran-will-inflict-a-blow-8848103" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Iran&rsquo;s Supreme Leader</a>.

'No trust, no talks': Iran rejects direct talks with US over nuclear program despite Trump’s warnings

As President Donald Trump&rsquo;s new tariffs are set to take effect in just two days, India and the United States have agreed to wrap up part of a trade agreement by the end of the year.
Despite this progress, there has been no word on whether India will be granted any relief from the incoming tariffs. Starting 2 April, Indian exports are likely to be hit by fresh import duties from the US.
Officials from both nations held discussions in New Delhi this week, working on the first stage of a wider trade deal that they hope to finalise by autumn 2025.

Aside from that, Washington&rsquo;s move to apply a 25% tariff on countries that buy oil from Venezuela could hurt India, a long-time importer of Venezuelan crude.
<h2>What was discussed?</h2>
In a statement released on Saturday night, India&rsquo;s commerce ministry said both sides had "broadly come to an understanding on the next steps towards a mutually beneficial, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), to finalise its first tranche by fall 2025".

The talks covered ways to "deepen bilateral cooperation in priority areas including increasing market access, reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers and deepening supply chain integration".
Still, there was no indication that either side would act before Tuesday when the new US tariffs are due to start.
According to India Ratings and Research, a credit rating agency, the US tariff hike could cause India&rsquo;s exports to fall by as much as $7.3 billion in the next financial year.

<h2>India&rsquo;s efforts to ease tensions</h2>
India has recently made some tariff cuts in a bid to smooth things over with Washington. This includes slashing duties on high-end motorbikes and bourbon whiskey.
Ahead of the latest round of talks, Indian media had reported that the government was considering dropping a tax on online services such as digital ads.
There were also suggestions that India might reduce tariffs on products like cars, electronics, and medical equipment to help move the talks forward.

Clock's ticking! Trump’s tariffs to take effect in 48 hours and India could lose $7.3 billion in exports

President Donald Trump is preparing to roll out his most aggressive trade move yet&nbsp;as his long-promised &ldquo;Liberation Day in America&rdquo; arrives on Wednesday. After already imposing tariffs that have shaken global markets, Trump is now set to launch a sweeping round of reciprocal tariffs aimed at shrinking the United States&rsquo; record trade deficit.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has slapped tariffs on goods from China, Mexico, and Canada, as well as on steel, aluminium, foreign vehicles, and auto parts. He has also threatened further duties on traditional allies like the European Union, going as far as to mention tariffs on European wine.

But April 2 is seen as the real turning point in Trump&rsquo;s &ldquo;America First&rdquo; trade agenda. That&rsquo;s the day he will formally announce the reciprocal tariffs, targeting countries responsible for the bulk of the US&rsquo;s $1.2 trillion trade deficit. The measures will officially take effect on Thursday.
<h2>What are reciprocal tariffs?</h2>
Trump&rsquo;s plan involves levying tariffs on imports from countries that currently impose tariffs on US goods. Back in February, he signed a memorandum instructing US trade officials to compile a country-by-country list of matching tariff rates.
<h2>Why is Trump doing this?</h2>
According to Trump, the aim is to counter what he sees as unfair trade practices by foreign governments. By matching tariffs, the administration hopes to make importing into the US more costly, thereby encouraging companies to manufacture within the country.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the US has allowed other nations to apply tariffs on its exports without any pushback. &ldquo;We can&rsquo;t do without it,&rdquo; he said, insisting the tariffs are necessary for both national and international economic security.
<h2>Who are the 'Dirty 15'?</h2>
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently explained that the tariffs would primarily target countries responsible for the largest share of the US trade deficit and those imposing the steepest tariffs on US exports.
Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/bad-bad-things-will-happen-trump-warns-iran-on-nuclear-deal-8902025">'Bad, bad things will happen': Trump warns Iran on nuclear deal</a>
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s what we would call the &lsquo;Dirty 15,&rsquo;&rdquo; Bessent said, noting these countries account for just 15% of US trading partners but represent a large portion of overall trade. While the official list has not been published, countries with significant trade imbalances include China, the EU, Mexico, Vietnam, Japan, and Canada, among others.
<h2>Is Trump narrowing the scope?</h2>
Bessent hinted that the administration might limit the scope of the tariffs, contrary to earlier sweeping proposals. For instance, while Trump has imposed new tariffs on the auto industry, other sectors&mdash;such as semiconductors and pharmaceuticals&mdash;have not yet been affected.
Asked about potential exemptions for life-saving medicines, Trump said, &ldquo;We&rsquo;ll be announcing it soon. But we have to bring pharmaceuticals, drugs and pharmaceuticals, back into our country.&rdquo;
Despite weeks of building anticipation, Trump softened his rhetoric this week. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to make it very lenient,&rdquo; he told reporters after signing the latest round of auto tariffs. &ldquo;It&rsquo;ll be, in many cases, less than the tariff that they&rsquo;ve been charging us for decades.&rdquo;
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed this, saying Trump believes the tariff levels &ldquo;would be more conservative than many people are expecting.&rdquo;
<h2>Will this hurt the US economy?</h2>
Economists have warned that extensive tariffs could harm an already fragile economy. Tariffs tend to raise prices for consumers and businesses, and retaliatory measures from other countries could dampen exports and shake investor confidence.
Stock markets have already shown signs of concern. On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by over 700 points, while the S&amp;P 500 also took a hit. The losses came after inflation data showed a 2.8% rise in core prices compared to last year&mdash;higher than expected.
<h2>How are other nations responding?</h2>
Several countries have already hit back. Canada and China imposed retaliatory tariffs following earlier rounds, and the European Union is expected to respond soon.
Canadian Prime Minister Mike Carney criticised the US&rsquo;s 25% auto tariffs, saying America is &ldquo;no longer a reliable partner.&rdquo; He added that Canada will seek deeper trade ties elsewhere and announce fresh countermeasures next week. &ldquo;Nothing is off the table as we defend our workers and our country,&rdquo; he said.

Vehicles protected under the USMCA deal&mdash;negotiated during Trump&rsquo;s first term&mdash;will not face full tariffs. However, parts sourced from outside North America will still be taxed.
Germany and France have also called for an EU-wide response.
<h2>What if countries retaliate?</h2>
Trump was clear that any retaliatory tariffs would be met with further US action. &ldquo;That has to stop,&rdquo; he said, referring to decades of what he sees as exploitation of US trade policy. He also claimed that some world leaders privately admitted to having taken advantage of the US&mdash;though he didn&rsquo;t name names.

Who are the 'Dirty 15'? Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently explained that the tariffs would primarily target countries responsible for the largest share of the US trade deficit and those imposing the steepest tariffs on US exports. Also read: 'Bad, bad things will happen': Trump warns Iran on nuclear deal “There’s what we would call the ‘Dirty 15,’” Bessent said, noting these countries account for just 15% of US trading partners but represent a large portion of overall trade. While the official list has not been published, countries with significant trade imbalances include China, the EU, Mexico, Vietnam, Japan, and Canada, among others. Is Trump narrowing the scope? Bessent hinted that the administration might limit the scope of the tariffs, contrary to earlier sweeping proposals. For instance, while Trump has imposed new tariffs on the auto industry, other sectors—such as semiconductors and pharmaceuticals—have not yet been affected. Asked about potential exemptions for life-saving medicines, Trump said, “We’ll be announcing it soon. But we have to bring pharmaceuticals, drugs and pharmaceuticals, back into our country.” Despite weeks of building anticipation, Trump softened his rhetoric this week. “We’re going to make it very lenient,” he told reporters after signing the latest round of auto tariffs. “It’ll be, in many cases, less than the tariff that they’ve been charging us for decades.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed this, saying Trump believes the tariff levels “would be more conservative than many people are expecting.” Will this hurt the US economy? Economists have warned that extensive tariffs could harm an already fragile economy. Tariffs tend to raise prices for consumers and businesses, and retaliatory measures from other countries could dampen exports and shake investor confidence. Stock markets have already shown signs of concern. On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by over 700 points, while the S&P 500 also took a hit. The losses came after inflation data showed a 2.8% rise in core prices compared to last year—higher than expected. How are other nations responding? Several countries have already hit back. Canada and China imposed retaliatory tariffs following earlier rounds, and the European Union is expected to respond soon. Canadian Prime Minister Mike Carney criticised the US’s 25% auto tariffs, saying America is “no longer a reliable partner.” He added that Canada will seek deeper trade ties elsewhere and announce fresh countermeasures next week. “Nothing is off the table as we defend our workers and our country,” he said. Also read: RECORD BREAKING! Trump signed 107 executive orders in two months, nearly triples Biden's count Vehicles protected under the USMCA deal—negotiated during Trump’s first term—will not face full tariffs. However, parts sourced from outside North America will still be taxed. Germany and France have also called for an EU-wide response. What if countries retaliate? Trump was clear that any retaliatory tariffs would be met with further US action. “That has to stop,” he said, referring to decades of what he sees as exploitation of US trade policy. He also claimed that some world leaders privately admitted to having taken advantage of the US—though he didn’t name names. (With inputs from agencies)

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he had a &ldquo;very productive&rdquo; conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, even as tensions between the two countries continue to rise.
&ldquo;I just finished speaking with Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. It was an extremely productive call, we agree on many things, and will be meeting immediately after Canada&rsquo;s upcoming Election to work on elements of Politics, Business, and all other factors, that will end up being great for both the United States of America and Canada,&rdquo; Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
The statement comes amid a deepening rift between the US and Canada, fuelled by Trump&rsquo;s recent move to impose tariffs and his call for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States.
Speaking a day earlier, Carney criticised the US stance and questioned its reliability as an ally. &ldquo;It is clear that the United States is no longer a reliable partner. It is possible that, with comprehensive negotiations, we will be able to restore some trust, but there will be no turning back,&rdquo; he said.
Carney also stressed the need for Canada to reduce its trade dependence on its southern neighbour. &ldquo;We will need to dramatically reduce our reliance on the United States. We will need to pivot our trade relationships elsewhere,&rdquo; he added.
In response to the planned US tariffs on imported vehicles, Carney warned that Canada would retaliate. He temporarily paused his election campaign to take charge of a Cabinet committee focused on relations with the US.
&ldquo;We will fight the US tariffs with retaliatory trade actions of our own that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impacts here in Canada,&rdquo; he stated.

US Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, are expected to arrive in Greenland on Friday (March 28) for a significantly pulled-back visit, following backlash over the original plans. The initial itinerary triggered a diplomatic stir between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland.
The American delegation includes White House National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and Republican Senator Mike Lee from Utah.
<h2>'We would rather not have Vance in Greenland'</h2>
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s safe to say we would rather not have him [Vance] in Greenland,&rdquo; a source from the Danish government told The Guardian.

The visit began as what was described as a personal trip by Usha Vance. She had planned to attend cultural events in Greenland&rsquo;s capital, Nuuk, including a dog-sledding race, and spend time with her son. However, the scale of the security arrangements quickly suggested the trip was more than just a private tour.
Protests were anticipated, and the people of Greenland expressed unease which stemmed from President Donald Trump&rsquo;s remarks about wanting to acquire Greenland, which he considers vital for American national security.
The announcement that National Security Advisor Waltz would join the group only added to the controversy.

Greenland&rsquo;s acting Prime Minister, M&uacute;te B Egede, criticised the visit, calling it a &ldquo;provocation&rdquo; and a &ldquo;demonstration of power&rdquo;. He urged the global community to pay attention.
&ldquo;Just for the record, the government of Greenland has not extended any invitations for any visits, neither private nor official,&rdquo; Egede said.
On Thursday, Denmark&rsquo;s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, responded to the situation, repeating, &ldquo;Greenland is part of the Danish kingdom. That is not going to change.&rdquo;

She added, &ldquo;We in the kingdom would really like to work together with the Americans on defence and security. We want that in Ukraine, we want that in Europe, and of course we also want that when it comes to the high north. But Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.&rdquo;
Originally, the second lady&rsquo;s tour included stops in Nuuk and Sisimiut, with plans to attend the annual dog race. Security vehicles, including bulletproof cars, had already arrived in Greenland in preparation.
However, after statements from Greenland&rsquo;s leadership and Prime Minister Frederiksen, the US scaled back the plans. The updated schedule now features just one stop, Pituffik Space Base, a remote American military installation in Greenland.

In Sisimiut, the mayor declined to organise a meeting with Mrs Vance, citing the upcoming local elections. Locals were also preparing a silent protest, planning to turn their backs on the American visitors.
Within two days of the trip&rsquo;s announcement, the cultural events were cancelled. Instead, the focus shifted solely to the military base visit and Vice-President Vance himself was added to the trip. Although Waltz had briefly been removed from the official list, his name was later reinstated.
<h2>'Leaders in US, Denmark ignored Greenland for far too long'</h2>
Speaking ahead of the visit, JD Vance said, &ldquo;Leaders in both America and in Denmark, I think, ignored Greenland for far too long. That&rsquo;s been bad for Greenland. It&rsquo;s also been bad for the security of the entire world. We think we can take things in a different direction.&rdquo;
Vance is now the most senior American official to ever visit Greenland. While Denmark appears relieved by the trimmed-down nature of the trip, his presence still stresses the Trump administration&rsquo;s growing focus on the island.
President Trump has continued to express interest in acquiring Greenland, recently saying that the United States will &ldquo;go as far as we have to go&rdquo; to pursue that goal.

‘Cold reception’ awaits JD Vance, wife Usha in Greenland as scaled-back trip draws global attention: What to know

Turkish national Rumeysa Ozturk, a doctoral student at Tufts University, was detained by federal immigration officers near her residence in Somerville, Massachusetts, on Tuesday (Mar 25) evening. The incident has sparked debate after CCTV footage of the incident emerged on social media.
According to her attorney, Masha Khanbabai, she was on her way to meet friends for an Iftar dinner, where they would break their Ramadan fast, but never made it there, reported CNN. Her arrest has raised concerns among legal experts, civil rights advocates and university officials.
The surveillance footage of her arrest showed six plainclothes agents, with their faces covered, from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) surrounding her while she was walking alone. Khanbabai said that Ozturk was physically restrained, handcuffed and taken into custody, without any explanation, despite she was in possession of a valid student visa.

According to Khanbabai, Ozturk was enrolled in a PhD program at Tufts University with a valid F-1 visa, which allows foreign students to pursue academics in the US.
Ozturk was detained as she &ldquo;engaged in activities in support of Hamas&rdquo;, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday (Mar 26), without specifying the activities. Her visa has been revoked, while her attorney told CNN that no formal charges have been filed against her.

In some cases, the email address and even associated passwords were accessible. Der Spiegel warned that foreign intelligence agencies may have monitored their communications, including the now-infamous Signal group chat that inadvertently included The Atlantic journalist Jeffrey Goldberg.&nbsp;
Details of the chat, which contained sensitive military discussions, were published by The Atlantic on Wednesday.&nbsp;
