The idea is eerily similar to Russian President Vladimir Putin's exhortation to Russian women to have at least eight or more babies.

$5,000 'baby bonus' for new mothers, menstrual cycle education: Weird ideas Trump is hearing for a great American 'baby boom'

The US is either slapping tariffs or deporting people; this has been a major agenda for Trump 2.0. The administration has been certain about deporting all immigrants, and in the quest to do that, it was earlier reported that an erroneous deportation took place. Kilmer Abrego-Garcia, a Maryland resident, was deported to El Salvador, after which a senator visited him on Friday (Apr 18) looking for ways to bring him back. And now, Trump says Abrego-Garcia is not 'innocent'.

The president took to Truth Social, he wrote, "Radical lunatic democrats and their comrades in the fake news media are falsely making Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia out to be a very sweet and innocent person, which is a total, blatant, and dangerous lie."
He added, "Garcia has been found by two separate courts to be a member of the violent, killer gang MS-13, was in our country illegally, and is under a deportation order. It is despicable and unAmerican for liberals and the mainstream media to hate our country so much, and be obsessed with protecting criminals, instead of working to keep our border, streets, and families safe. Those lying to the American people on behalf of violent criminals have to be held responsible by the agencies and the courts. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

Here's the curious case of the Maryland man</a>
<h3>Why did the deportation take place?</h3>
Abrego-Garcia was deported in one of the three high-profile deportation flights to El Salvador in March. The administration said he was a member of the MS-13 gang, which is an international criminal group. In contrast, the judge, in his ruling, prohibited his removal from his home country.
Abrego-Garcia's lawyers have demanded his return to the United States. A complaint filed by his family mentions that his 5-year-old son and wife are both US citizens residing in Maryland. It also noted that he was driving with his son seated in the backseat when ICE officers stopped his car and handcuffed him.
However, the Trump administration refrained from bringing him back from El Salvador, saying they did not have the legal authority to expedite the process of return.

Signal group chat leak: Trump's defence secretary Hegseth 'shared' details of Yemen attack with his wife and family

Amid the tariff war with China, Donald Trump has now brought back the controversial COVID-19 lab-leak theory in the discussion as the White House refreshed an existing website on the virus. Previously, the website was dedicated to information around vaccination and testing of the COVID-19 virus, but now it boldly claims that the virus, which set the entire world on a pause in 2020, was a result of a lab accident primarily from China's Wuhan.&nbsp;

The White House's claim opposes the widely accepted narrative that the virus originated naturally from an animal-to-human spillover. This narrative has been supported by many scientists as well.&nbsp;
<h2>Naturally originated?&nbsp;</h2>
The website ow primarily criticises the &ldquo;The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2,&rdquo; a study against the lab-leak theory.&nbsp;
The White House further alleged that the top medical advisor of Joe Biden, Dr Anthony Fauci, promoted the narrative of animal-to-human spillover. The Website alleges that &ldquo;The Proximal Origin of SARS-Cov-2" was used by public health officials and the media to silence the lab-leak theory in favour of a more widely accepted natural origin.

1. The website claimed that the COVID-19 virus has biological elements that are not typically found in nature.

COVID-19 'lab-leak' theory: What is it as per Trump's new website amid tariff war with China?

The US has imposed new port fees on vessels operated and built by China. This comes after President Donald Trump levied the heftiest tax on Beijing. Trump has slammed a 245% tariff on China. And the new fee is an attempt to reduce China's dominance in the sector and elevate America's position with this move.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian was quoted in news outlet Global Times, "I would like to reiterate that imposing port fees and additional tariffs on cargo handling equipment harm the interests of both others and itself. It raises global shipping costs, disrupts supply chain stability, and increases inflationary pressures in the US, ultimately harming American consumers and businesses, without revitalising the US shipbuilding industry."
"We urge the US side to respect the facts and multilateral rules, immediately cease its wrongdoings. China will take necessary measures to firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," Lin added.

On Thursday (Apr 18), United States Trade Representative (USTR) issued a statement which mentioned, "USTR took targeted action to restore American shipbuilding and address China&rsquo;s unreasonable acts, policies, and practices to dominate the maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding sectors. These responsive actions come after a year-long Section 301 investigation."
Ambassador Greer further highlighted, "Ships and shipping are vital to American economic security and the free flow of commerce. The Trump administration&rsquo;s actions will begin to reverse Chinese dominance, address threats to the U.S. supply chain, and send a demand signal for U.S.-built ships."

'Cease wrongdoings': Beijing slams US' port fee plan for Chinese ships

US President Donald Trump on Thursday (Apr 17) called former president Joe Biden&rsquo;s administration the worst in American history, adding that former president Jimmy Carter &ldquo;died a happy man&rdquo; knowing that someone was worse than him.
&ldquo;And then you had like the last administration (Joe Biden's), the only thing they were good at was cheating in elections,&rdquo; Trump told reporters during an Oval Office meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. &ldquo;That&lsquo;s about all they could do. They couldn&lsquo;t do anything. They were useless. They were incompetent.&rdquo;

He added, &ldquo;Worst administration in the history of our country. Worse than Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter died a happy man. You know why? Because he wasn&lsquo;t the worst. President Joe Biden was.&rdquo;
Carter, who was the 39th president of the United States, recently died on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. Earlier his death, Trump had also mocked Carter&rsquo;s administration, calling it the &ldquo;worst&rdquo; in history, reported The Independent.

&ldquo;I think he&rsquo;s terrible, but I can't complain because we had the most successful administration economically in the history of our country,&rdquo; he said during the press briefing. &ldquo;I think we&lsquo;re going to do even better this time, because you will see that the numbers that we&lsquo;re taking in are astronomical. We&rsquo;re taking in tremendous amounts of money with the tariffs.&rdquo;
<h2>A &lsquo;good man&rsquo;</h2>
During his 2024 election campaign, Trump often compared the two Democratic leaders, saying Biden, who was &ldquo;the worst&rdquo;, made Carter look &ldquo;brilliant&rdquo;.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday (Apr 17) called former president Joe Biden’s administration the worst in American history, adding that former president Jimmy Carter “died a happy man” knowing that someone was worse than him. “And then you had like the last administration (Joe Biden's), the only thing they were good at was cheating in elections,” Trump told reporters during an Oval Office meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. “That‘s about all they could do. In political terms, Trump's third-term statements aligns quite perfectly with the Overton Window - a model that describes how the range of acceptable discourse can be expanded by gradually introducing extreme ideas, often through humour or hyperbole.

Is Trump’s ‘third-term’ talk just a joke or a test? Here’s what history suggests | WION Explains

US President Donald Trump has been imposing tariffs on countries globally; it ranges from 10% to 125%. Bearing the brunt of the heftiest taxes is China.&nbsp;
On Thursday (Apr 17), Trump touted that the 'US is getting rich on tariffs'. This also came as he chose to lash out at Federal Reserve Chief Jerome Powell for his comments on tariffs and linking it to inflation.

Powell said, "Tariffs are highly likely to generate at least a temporary rise in inflation."
"We're making a fortune with tariffs" &ndash; these are Trump's claims. But is it true? Is it factual? Let's find out.
<h3>Are tariffs making America rich?</h3>
Amid the tariff-imposing spree, Trump chose to give a breather for discussions. And so, he announced a 90-day pause before the tariffs bring in money to the US.
While addressing the media, he said the country is making $2 billion a day. Now, is it with the tariff in place, or is it an estimated figure?&nbsp;
The US Treasury Department publishes data daily, and nowhere do the figures align with Trump's claims.
<h3>What are the claims based on?</h3>
Data from the Treasury Department suggests that with 'customs and certain excise taxes', the average for this month is $200 million a day. And for February, the country raised $7.25 billion.
White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro had said tariffs would raise $700 billion a year. Now, that possibly could be where Trump is rounding off the magic '$2 billion' figure.
<h3>Trump's Truth:</h3>
On Truth Social, Trump went all guns blazing as he wrote, "The ECB is expected to cut interest rates for the 7th time, and yet, "Too Late" Jerome Powell of the Fed, who is always TOO LATE AND WRONG, yesterday issued a report which was another, and typical, complete "mess!"&nbsp;
He added, "Oil prices are down, groceries (even eggs!) are down, and the USA is getting RICH ON TARIFFS. Too Late should have lowered interest rates, like the ECB, long ago, but he should certainly lower them now. Powell's termination cannot come fast enough!"

Harvard student visa revocation move can affect Indians: Studying at Harvard, one of the most prestigious American universities, is a dream for many Indian students, but they could lose a chance to do so in the Ivy League institution. According to reports, the administration of President Donald Trump has warned that Harvard might lose the ability to host international students.
This comes amid an ongoing tussle between Harvard and Trump, who described it as a 'joke university' over its support of student activism and alleged antisemitism on campus.

<h2>Trump's war on universities</h2>
Trump has threatened universities with funding cuts over activism he deems antisemitic and 'terrorist'.&nbsp;A Trump executive order of January 28 had asked universities to monitor international students for suspected participation in crime or terrorism.
<h2>Department of Homeland Security wants to see Harvard records&nbsp;</h2>
The Department of Homeland Security or DHS has threatened to revoke Harvard's eligibility to host foreign students unless it opens up the records on disciplinary action against its students who engage in activism.
DHS now wants universities to have certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) if they are to host international students on student visas.
The records have to be given by April 30, failing which SEVP "will automatically withdraw the school's certification&rdquo; to host international students.
This was revealed in a letter sent on Wednesday (Apr 16), signed by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
<h2>What information is DHS asking from Harvard? </h2>
In its letter, DHS asked Harvard to give information on:&nbsp; &gt; visa holders who are known threats to other students or university personnel
&gt; those who cause obstruction of the school&rsquo;s learning environment &gt; disciplinary actions against those who made threats to other students or populations or participated in protests.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/harvard-university-widener-library-has-a-strange-link-to-the-titanic-8966557">Harvard library donated by man who died on the Titanic has 92 kilometres of bookshelves</a>

Harvard student visa revocation move can affect Indians: Studying at Harvard, one of the most prestigious American universities, is a dream for many Indian students, but they could lose a chance to do so in the Ivy League institution. According to reports, the administration of President Donald Trump has warned that Harvard might lose the ability to host international students. This comes amid an ongoing tussle between Harvard and Trump, who described it as a 'joke university' over its support of student activism and alleged antisemitism on campus. Trump's war on universities Trump has threatened universities with funding cuts over activism he deems antisemitic and 'terrorist'. A Trump executive order of January 28 had asked universities to monitor international students for suspected participation in crime or terrorism. Department of Homeland Security wants to see Harvard records The Department of Homeland Security or DHS has threatened to revoke Harvard's eligibility to host foreign students unless it opens up the records on disciplinary action against its students who engage in activism. DHS now wants universities to have certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) if they are to host international students on student visas. The records have to be given by April 30, failing which SEVP "will automatically withdraw the school's certification” to host international students. This was revealed in a letter sent on Wednesday (Apr 16), signed by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. What information is DHS asking from Harvard? In its letter, DHS asked Harvard to give information on: > visa holders who are known threats to other students or university personnel > those who cause obstruction of the school’s learning environment > disciplinary actions against those who made threats to other students or populations or participated in protests. China, for the first time in more than a decade, convened an unusual Central Conference on Work Relating to Neighbouring Countries on April 9, raising eyebrows as it comes right after Trump began its tariff war.&nbsp;
As US President Donald Trump singled out China from its "mercy list", imposing higher and higher tariffs, Beijing has been making efforts to stabilise its territory and strengthen ties with the neighbours.&nbsp;
<h2>How tariffs went from 34% to 245%?&nbsp;</h2>
The trade war begins with Trump imposing 34% tariffs on China on its "Liberation Day". Following this, Beijing retaliated and imposed 34% tariffs on the US.&nbsp;
Of course, Trump did not like it, as he slammed China in a Truth Social post, saying, China panicked and they should not have done this. "CHINA PLAYED IT WRONG, THEY PANICKED - THE ONE THING THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO DO!," the US president said in a post on Truth Social.&nbsp;

The tariff war kept on intensifying as both nations did not back out and kept on imposing higher and higher tariffs. The US then warned China, saying that it will impose a 50% tariff if China doesn't back down.&nbsp;
However, China being brave and unbothered, didn't back down, which led to Trump announcing a whopping 104% tariffs on Beijing. China again retaliated with 84% tariffs on all American goods.&nbsp;
This annoyed Trump, and he imposed 125% tariffs on China while showing compassion to other 75+ nations, which according to him have contacted the US representatives for trade talks. Trump did not stop here, and on Tuesday, the White House announced 245% tariffs on Chinese goods.&nbsp;

<h2>'Amicable, secure and prosperous neighbourhood'</h2>
Coming to China's new in-making friendship with neighbouring countries, Chinese President Xi Jinping, during the neighbourhood conference, pledged to strengthen China's ties with neighbouring nations by "appropriately" managing differences.
He also noted that China&rsquo;s relations with neighbouring countries were at a "critical phase&rdquo; amid global uncertainties.&nbsp;
The ongoing trade war between China and the US has also pushed and made Beijing realise to mend ties with the neighbouring countries, showing it a "sense of urgency".&nbsp;
Despite China's differences with multiple neighbouring countries, including &nbsp;Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam and India, Jinping's statement claimed that ties with neighbouring countries were &ldquo;at their best in modern times&rdquo;, while entering &ldquo;a critical phase of deep linkage between the regional landscape and the world changes&rdquo;.

<h2>How it flipped for India?</h2>
During the "rough phase" China is going through, it also flipped towards India. Despite the growing issues between the two nations, China shockingly turned all friendly towards India on April 9.&nbsp;
A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in India said that the two "largest developing" countries should "stand together" to overcome the difficulties brought by the ongoing trade war.&nbsp;
Even after many clashes, now China has emphasised mutual benefits, saying that the China-India economic and trade relationship is based on complimentarity and mutual benefit.
"Facing the U.S. abuse of tariffs, which deprives countries, especially Global South countries, of their right to development, the two largest developing countries should stand together to overcome the difficulties," Spokesperson Yu Jing said earlier this month.&nbsp;
Even though Trump has been imposing higher tariffs on China, and not letting this war take a pause, he also showed openness to strike a deal with China, saying that "the ball is in China's court."
Yet, it is unclear what the future holds for these two nations as the raging tariff war keeps on getting intense and intense, with neither the US nor China wanting to back down.&nbsp;

The United States has reportedly stopped a planned G7 statement condemning Russia&rsquo;s deadly missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy, Bloomberg reported on 15 April, citing unnamed sources. The move was made to avoid disrupting peace talks between Moscow and Washington.
Russia&rsquo;s attack on Sumy took place on Palm Sunday, 13 April, leaving 35 people dead and 119 injured. It was one of the deadliest assaults on the city since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a> lashed out at a journalist after she questioned him in the Oval Office on Monday (Apr 14) over the wrongful deportation of an El Salvadoran national.&nbsp;
During the White House visit of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, the CNN journalist, Kaitlan Collins, asked the president why his administration is refusing to comply with a Supreme Court order, which directed the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident. The Salvadoran national was mistakenly deported to El Salvador&rsquo;s notorious CECOT prison last month.

US President Donald Trump met El Salvador&rsquo;s President Nayib Bukele and if there was one major takeaway from the meeting, it was that Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a man mistakenly deported to El Salvador from Maryland, will not be coming back to the United States, despite a Supreme Court decision saying his return must be &ldquo;facilitated.&rdquo;
In a meeting at the White House, both leaders stood firm on the issue, with Bukele calling the suggestion of returning Abrego Garcia &ldquo;preposterous.&rdquo;

According to Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller, the Supreme Court&rsquo;s ruling only stated that if El Salvador chose to return Abrego Garcia, the United States would provide the necessary support, like transportation.

Asked if he would personally request Bukele to return the man to the US, President Trump passed the question to US Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Bondi backed the administration&rsquo;s position, saying, &ldquo;In 2019 two courts ruled that he was a member of MS13 and he was illegally in our country. <h2>Confusion over Supreme Court wording</h2>
The Supreme Court&rsquo;s recent unsigned decision upheld a lower court ruling by Judge Paula Xinis that the US government must &ldquo;facilitate&rdquo; Abrego Garcia&rsquo;s return but not necessarily &ldquo;effectuate&rdquo; it. The wording has become central to the dispute, with officials arguing that &ldquo;facilitate&rdquo; means simply providing a plane, not forcing El Salvador to act.
Senior White House aides have voiced their opposition to Judge Xinis&rsquo; ruling, saying a court cannot interfere in matters of foreign policy.
President Trump himself has shifted his view in recent days. After initially saying he would respect the Supreme Court's decision. &ldquo;If the Supreme Court said bring somebody back, I would do that. I respect the Supreme Court,&rdquo; he told reporters, he now backs the White House interpretation that leaves the final decision up to El Salvador.

<h2>Why was Abrego Garcia deported?</h2>
Abrego Garcia reportedly entered the United States illegally around 2011. In 2019, an immigration judge reviewed his case and decided not to deport him, citing credible threats to his life from gangs in El Salvador. The judge noted that one gang had targeted him due to his family&rsquo;s pupusa business.
Despite the judge&rsquo;s ruling, he was still removed from the country earlier this year in what officials now admit was a mistake. However, the Trump administration maintains that Abrego Garcia has gang ties and was never legally entitled to remain in the US.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned that trade wars benefit no one in a thinly veiled message aimed at Donald Trump&rsquo;s continued tariffs on Chinese goods. Xi&rsquo;s comments were made as he set off on a diplomatic tour of Southeast Asia, which includes stops in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia.
The warning appeared in a joint editorial published in Chinese and Vietnamese media just before he arrived in Hanoi. Experts believe the trip is part of a wider attempt by China to present itself as a responsible global power, in contrast to Trump&rsquo;s more aggressive approach.

Although Trump briefly paused most of the tariffs last week after a sharp drop in the stock market, the bulk of the import taxes on Chinese goods remain in place. China faces tariffs as high as 145 percent on several exports to the US. In response, Beijing imposed 125 percent tariffs on American products and has promised to keep retaliating.

While the Vietnam trip was arranged before Trump&rsquo;s new round of &ldquo;Liberation Day&rdquo; tariffs came into force, it has taken on new importance. Southeast Asian countries are now trying to manage the risks of being caught in the middle of the US-China trade dispute.
Vietnam, although governed by a one-party communist system like China, has managed to strike a balance by keeping strong ties with both Washington and Beijing. Trump admin forcing FEMA officials to take polygraph tests amid DHS leak probe: Report

'Martial law' has started trending on social media periodically, with users claiming that United States (US) President Donald Trump will&nbsp;announce it after invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807. As per rumours, by using this act, Trump may send soldiers to the southern border of Mexico to protect "America&rsquo;s sovereignty" that is under attack.&rdquo;

The rumours came in as Donald Trump upon entering White House in January signed an executive order declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border. He had directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to provide a report within 90 days about the state of the border to determine &ldquo;whether to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807.&rdquo; The date of the 90-day ultimatum is April 20.
"Because of the gravity and emergency of this present danger and imminent threat, it is necessary for the Armed Forces to take all appropriate action to assist the Department of Homeland Security in obtaining full operational control of the southern border," the executive order stated.&nbsp;
Notably, the act has been invoked at least 30 times in the past, with the most recent occurrence being in 1992 when former US President George W Bush used it in response to the Rodney King protests and riots in Los Angeles.

<h2>What is the Insurrection Act of 1807?</h2>
The Insurrection Act of 1807 allows the president to utilise federal military troops or federalize National Guard troops in order to suppress uncontrollable protests or other civil disturbance situations.&nbsp;As per the Independent, the Insurrection Act is a series of laws enacted by Congress between 1792 and 1871 that specifically address utilising the military within the US. The act is an exception to the Posse Comitatus Act, which typically prevents the federal government from using the federal military or National Guard to enforce domestic policies.

'Martial law' has started trending on social media periodically, with users claiming that United States (US) President Donald Trump will announce it after invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807. As per rumours, by using this act, Trump may send soldiers to the southern border of Mexico to protect "America’s sovereignty" that is under attack.” WATCH | Trump replaces Obama’s White House portrait with his own portrait The rumours came in as Donald Trump upon entering White House in January signed an executive order declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border. He had directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to provide a report within 90 days about the state of the border to determine “whether to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807.” The date of the 90-day ultimatum is April 20. "Because of the gravity and emergency of this present danger and imminent threat, it is necessary for the Armed Forces to take all appropriate action to assist the Department of Homeland Security in obtaining full operational control of the southern border," the executive order stated. Notably, the act has been invoked at least 30 times in the past, with the most recent occurrence being in 1992 when former US President George W Bush used it in response to the Rodney King protests and riots in Los Angeles. Trump to declare martial law? What is Insurrection Act of 1807 and rumours circulating about it

In an unscripted 40-minute speech, Kennedy referenced conspiracy theories, criticised agency staff, and accused the FDA of being controlled by corporate interests.
<h2>'The Deep State is real,' says Kennedy</h2>
&ldquo;President Trump always talks about the Deep State, and the media, you know, disparages him and says that he&rsquo;s paranoid,&rdquo; Kennedy told the audience, according to a transcript and audio obtained by Politico.

He went on to argue that every human institution eventually ends up in the hands of powerful interest groups.
&ldquo;All of us are subject to those gravities of agency capture,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Be conscious of that gravity because it&rsquo;s going to be pulling you every single day of your career. We want to break away from this so we can make our kids healthy,&rdquo; he added.

Kennedy urged FDA staff to see his term as a chance to listen to &ldquo;dissidents&rdquo; and free the department from outside influence.
<h2>'Sock puppet' of industry</h2>
In another controversial moment, Kennedy described the FDA as having become a &ldquo;sock puppet&rdquo; for the very industries it is meant to regulate. He blamed rising rates of chronic disease, allergies, and other illnesses on unknown environmental toxins.
&ldquo;This whole generation is damaged,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;The information is out there. But those studies aren&rsquo;t done because they may offend the financial interests of powerful entities,&rdquo; he added.
In a personal anecdote, Kennedy reflected on the time he spent at the Wassaic State School in New York.
&ldquo;Because of my family&rsquo;s commitment to these issues, I spent 200 hours at Wassaic Home for the Retarded when I was in high school,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;So I was seeing people with intellectual disabilities all the time. I never saw anybody with autism.&rdquo;

The comment drew further criticism, especially as Kennedy has previously been accused of pushing discredited theories linking vaccines and autism.
Just days earlier, Kennedy had justified the planned removal of 10,000 federal employees, saying HHS would have to &ldquo;do more with less.&rdquo; The mass layoff plan has already sparked pushback from both inside and outside the department.

'Deep State is real': US health chief RFK Jr. pushes conspiracy claims, says media thinks Trump is 'paranoid'

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/too-many-people-dying-trump-pushes-russia-for-ceasefire-asks-kremlin-to-get-going-as-thousands-die-in-senseless-war-8952054" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> has once again called on Congress to back a bill that would make Daylight Savings Time (DST) permanent across the country.
In a post shared on Truth Social on Friday, Trump wrote, &ldquo;The House and Senate should push hard for more Daylight at the end of a day. Very popular and, most importantly, no more changing of the clocks, a big inconvenience and, for our government, A VERY COSTLY EVENT!!! DJT&rdquo;
The debate on whether to stop changing the clocks twice a year has been around for decades. On Thursday, during a Senate hearing, Commerce Chair Ted Cruz said that most lawmakers agree on ending the current system, but there&rsquo;s no consensus on what should replace it. Some prefer permanent DST, which brings more light in the evening. Others want permanent standard time, which gives more light in the early morning.

<h2>What is Daylight Saving Time?</h2>
Daylight Saving Time runs from March to November. Most states move the clocks forward by one hour, meaning the sun sets later in the evening, but people lose an hour of sleep when the change happens.
The idea was first introduced during World War I to give workers more daylight hours and cut down on energy use. That early law also created the five time zones the US still follows today.

See data</a>
<h2>The ongoing debate</h2>
Efforts to get rid of DST have been going on for over a century. The original World War I version lasted just over a year before being scrapped in 1919. It returned during World War II under the name &ldquo;wartime&rdquo; but was again removed once the conflict ended.
After that, different parts of the country did things their own way, leading to widespread confusion. In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act to bring order to the system. It created a national start and end date for DST, but gave states the option to opt out. Only Arizona and Hawaii chose to stay on standard time year-round.
<h2>Why do people want to end clock change?</h2>
Many people support ending the twice-yearly clock shift. For people, the concern is mostly about health. Changing the clocks can throw off sleep schedules, raise the risk of accidents, and even increase the chance of heart attacks and strokes, at least temporarily.
Others argue that keeping clocks in line with &ldquo;natural&rdquo; time, the natural rhythm of daylight and darkness, is better for overall well being.
The National Council of State Governments says more than 750 bills and resolutions have been introduced in state legislatures, most of them pushing for permanent daylight saving time.

Trump first showed support for ending the clock change last December. But in March, he noted that the issue still divides public opinion, &ldquo;If something is a 50/50 issue, it&rsquo;s hard to get excited about it. I assume people would like to have more light later, but some people want to have more light earlier because they don&rsquo;t want to take their kids to school in the dark.&rdquo;

Research conducted by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Ann Arbor, Michigan reveals U.S. automakers will need to spend an extra USD 108 billion by 2025 due to President Donald Trump's imposed 25% auto tariffs.
Research findings document how rising tariffs which began on April 3 inflicted substantial financial strain upon companies operating in the U.S. automotive industry. According to an analysis the Detroit Three auto manufacturers &mdash; Ford Motor, General Motors, and Stellantis &mdash; will experience USD 42 billion of the entire financial impact. According to research the three major automakers should expect to pay USD 4,911 in additional tariffs for each vehicle they assemble in the U.S. The cost for fully imported vehicles exceeds USD 8,641 for each vehicle.
The trade taxes extend to every imported automobile and component regardless of their origin from either Mexico or Canada. American companies benefiting from the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) can subtract the amount of U.S.-made content to receive some relief from compliance costs.
Shared industry data indicates that automotive part tariffs reach USD 4289 per vehicle and complete import tariffs exceed USD 8722 per vehicle.

The costly tariffs have started to force companies into production modifications. The Indiana plant of GM now produces more trucks while Stellantis reduced operations at Mexican and Canadian facilities temporarily. The production disruptions caused by this incident affect five domestic facilities that are connected to those plants through their workforce.
Matt Blunt from the American Automotive Policy Council stress that these tariffs threaten US automobile industry market competition. According to Blunt the researched findings show how much economic burden this 25 percent duty will impose on automotive operations. Auto manufacturers in America plan to preserve their conversation with government officials to accomplish increased domestic vehicle manufacturing goals.
GM and Stellantis deferred comment to the policy council, while Ford did not immediately respond.
Industry analysts say the added costs could lead to higher vehicle prices for consumers and may reduce overall car sales in an already challenging market environment.

A United States Department of Homeland Security task force has been created to use data analytic tools to search through the social media histories of around 1.5 million international students studying in the US to look for potential grounds for revoking their visas, reported NBC News.
The officials will also be looking for any charges or criminal convictions of the student visa holders, the report citing three sources familiar with the matter added.

Amid tariff war, post on zodiac of Donald Trump-Xi Jinping viral: '...until the end of time'

The automotive industry in Michigan strongly criticized President Donald Trump's decision to keep existing U.S. trade tariffs on automotive imports at 25% after he granted a temporary delay to many other import measures.
Detroit Regional Chamber joined forces with MichiganAuto to warn that extended trade barriers would create problems for Michigan's essential complex global supply systems. The signature Michigan industry experiences ongoing uncertain times because traditional supply chains alongside their essential workforce remain at risk from unstable trade policies according to these joint industry statements.
Automotive industry leaders in Michigan have consistently warned about the negative effects of these tariffs which threaten global market positions and decrease employment levels. Furthermore the Trump administration maintains 25% tariffs on both aluminum and steel imports which automakers are currently paying.

Trump announced on Wednesday that certain American companies might receive exemptions from the tariff program though he provided no information about whether automobile manufacturers qualified. The companies experience higher adverse impacts due to structural business factors. Trump responded to reporters that his administration would evaluate this case.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer urged the White House to entirely remove the auto and energy sectors from potential steel and aluminum trade restrictions. Analysis shows that the economy will suffer impacts as a result of these developments. Trump&rsquo;s auto import tariffs took effect April 3, impacting vehicles from Mexico and Canada. New tariffs on auto parts are scheduled to begin May 3. Stellantis has already announced temporary shutdowns at two plants in Mexico and Canada, leading to temporary layoffs at five connected U.S. facilities and affecting 900 workers. "The bond market is very tricky. I was watching it. But if you look at it now, it's beautiful. The bond market right now is beautiful. But yeah, I saw last night where people were getting a little queasy," he said.
<h2>A strategic pause?</h2>
Trump labelled the pause a "transition to greatness." He hinted that he might consider exempting some US companies from tariffs during the 90-day window, but said that the decisions would be made "instinctively".

But yeah, I saw last night where people were getting a little queasy," he said. A strategic pause? Trump labelled the pause a "transition to greatness." He hinted that he might consider exempting some US companies from tariffs during the 90-day window, but said that the decisions would be made "instinctively". <h2>EU calls US tariffs unjustified and damaging</h2>
&ldquo;The EU considers US tariffs unjustified and damaging, causing economic harm to both sides, as well as the global economy. The EU has stated its clear preference to find negotiated outcomes with the US, which would be balanced and mutually beneficial,&rdquo; the European Commission said.
The duties would start being collected from April 15, said the European Commission. The 27-nation bloc had warned of measures to protect European business and consumers after Trump announced the 25 per cent tariffs on the metals.

The EU also faces 20 per cent levies on almost all US imports as announced by the US president on April 2.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier said that the EU was ready to retaliate unless talks to negotiate with the Trump administration were successful.
&ldquo;We are prepared to respond,&rdquo; she had said. She further added that the EU was preparing to take countermeasures against Trump&rsquo;s sweeping tariffs to protect its interests and businesses. However, von der Leyen also said that it was &ldquo;not too late to address concerns through negotiations&rdquo; with the US.
