Donald Trump has refused to rule out the use of the US military to gain control of Greenland. The US president in an interview said that he's not saying he's going to use force to take the Denmark territory, but that he won't "rule (it) out" either. &nbsp;
Since taking over as President of the United States (POTUS), Trump has been very vocal about his desire to gain control of Greenland, the world's largest island and a self-governing territory under Denmark &mdash; a key NATO ally.

<h2>What did Trump say?</h2>
During an interview with NBC's Meet The Press on Sunday (May 6), Trump was asked if he would take the territory by force. To this, he replied, "I don&rsquo;t rule it out. I don&rsquo;t say I&rsquo;m going to do it, but I don&rsquo;t rule out anything. No, not there."
He then claimed that the US needs Greenland "very badly".
"We need Greenland very badly. Greenland is a very small amount of people, which we&rsquo;ll take care of, and we&rsquo;ll cherish them, and all of that. But we need that for international security," he added.
Trump made the jaw-dropping statement during a wide-ranging conversation marking his first 100 days back in office.

<h2>Will Donald Trump take Canada by force?</h2>
During the interview, Trump was also asked about using force against Canada, which he wants as the 51st state of the US. To this, he said, "It&rsquo;s highly unlikely. I don't see it with Canada. I just don't see it, I have to be honest with you".
He added that Canada would make a "cherished state" and lamented the "artificial" nature of the border, while accusing the US of subsidising Canada by $200 billion a year&mdash;a figure with no factual basis.
"I&rsquo;ll always talk about that. You know why? We subsidise Canada to the tune of $200bn a year," he said, if "Canada was part of the US it wouldn't cost us."
"It would be great &hellip; it would be a cherished state. And, if you look at our map, if you look at the geography &ndash; I&rsquo;m a real estate guy at heart. When I look down at that without that artificial line that was drawn with a ruler many years ago &ndash; was just an artificial line, goes straight across. You don&rsquo;t even realise," he added.

Hollywood actor Sean Penn has never been a fan of Donald Trump. Appearing on Jim Acosta&rsquo;s Subtsack podcast recently, the actor spoke about world politics, on the heels of his new film Words of War. He spoke about the dangers of a president like Trump and the direction in which the country was headed.&nbsp;

While talking about El Salvador&rsquo;s president Nayib Bukele and whether Trump will try to stay in the White House past his term limit, Sean Penn said that &ldquo;we should consider worst cast scenarios&rdquo; and that Trump &ldquo;might try to destroy the world before he ages out of life.&rdquo;
Sean added, &ldquo;I do think it&rsquo;s a reasonable theory that Donald Trump is not unlike the spouse of someone who leaves him, perhaps for another, who then murders their former partner because if they can&rsquo;t have her, nobody can. I think Donald Trump and his solipsism may have that relationship with the world and that this destruction is in part a power play, and also a literal intention of his final out.&rdquo;
Congressman Eric Swalwell also appeared on the podcast alongwith Sean. Eric serves as an executive producer on Words of War. He said, &ldquo;What worries me is if he doesn&rsquo;t believe there&rsquo;s somebody who can protect him, you will see him ratchet up what he&rsquo;s willing to do to the country to protect himself.

Once dismissed by Donald Trump as &ldquo;Li&rsquo;l Marco&rdquo;, Marco Rubio is now one of the most powerful figures in the Trump administration, holding not just one, but four top jobs. His transformation from political lightweight to presidential fixer has surprised many in Washington.
<h2>Trusted by Trump</h2>
Under President Trump&rsquo;s second term, Rubio has taken on a much larger role than expected. Initially seen as a weak player in Trump&rsquo;s circle, he has now become someone the president turns to when things need to get done.
Speaking in the Rose Garden on Thursday, Trump said, &ldquo;When I have a problem, I call up Marco. He gets it solved.&rdquo;
Rubio, a former Florida senator, currently serves as secretary of State, interim national security adviser, acting administrator for USAID, and acting archivist of the United States.

Rubio&rsquo;s rise seems tied to his ability to win Trump&rsquo;s trust by abandoning many of his earlier views and backing some of the president&rsquo;s most hard-line policies. He has managed to work well with other key figures in the administration, including Vice President JD Vance, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Special Envoy&nbsp;Steve Witkoff.

&nbsp;Senator James Risch, Republican chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Politico, &ldquo;When you take a job like this, you are no longer a free agent like you are when you're a United States senator&hellip; you commit to make happen what your boss wants to happen, and he has real ability to do that.&rdquo;
While Rubio&rsquo;s influence has grown, critics argue he&rsquo;s paid a steep price for it. Many believe he&rsquo;s abandoned core beliefs to stay in Trump&rsquo;s good graces.
&ldquo;Once you let yourself get trampled on, you lose respect, you lose cache, you lose your future in Washington, and Rubio is a doormat,&rdquo; said Adam Ereli, a former US ambassador to Bahrain.
<h2>Shedding his past positions</h2>
Rubio used to champion human rights and democracy programmes abroad. But now, under pressure from Trump&rsquo;s &ldquo;America First&rdquo; agenda, and his MAGA supporters who see such efforts as wasteful and &ldquo;woke&rdquo;, Rubio has rolled back many of these programmes.
He once supported firm action on authoritarian regimes, spoke out for U.S. military involvement where needed, and was a strong backer of Ukraine in its fight against Russia. But as secretary of State, he has softened his stance, pushing Ukraine towards peace talks instead of continued resistance.

<h2>On immigration, a sharp turn</h2>
Rubio, who once spoke proudly of his Cuban immigrant roots, has now fully embraced Trump&rsquo;s tough anti-immigration policies. He has backed measures to revoke student visas and approved plans to send migrants to a prison facility in El Salvador.
At a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Rubio was asked whether he had requested El Salvador to send back a man the U.S. mistakenly deported. &ldquo;I would never tell you that. And you know who else I&rsquo;ll never tell? A judge,&rdquo; he said.

From Trump's rival to Trump’s problem solver: How Marco Rubio landed four top roles; critics say he did it by ‘becoming a doormat’

Donald Trump's firebrand ally Marjorie Taylor Greene, a congresswoman known for her loyalty to the Republican president, has, in a rare public act of dissent, slammed him.
The Georgia congresswoman once likened Trump to Jesus Christ and said, "'The Democrats and the fake news media want to constantly talk about 'President Trump is a convicted felon'," she said at a Trump rally last year.
"Well, you want to know something? The man that I worship is also a convicted felon. And he was murdered on a Roman cross."
On X, Greene, a Trump loyalist, questioned the logic behind his recent moves, including the mineral deal with Ukraine, and cautioned, "When you are losing MTG (Marjorie Taylor Greene), you are losing the base."
<h2>What did she say?</h2>
It seems like Marjorie Taylor Greene's faith in Trump has been shaken. In a scathing, lengthy statement on X, she sought to distance herself from the US commander-in-chief: "I represent the base and when I'm frustrated and upset over the direction of things, you better be clear, the base is not happy".
Amid US' ongoing nuclear talks with Iran, it is feared that the Middle Eastern country may achieve enrichment levels for a nuclear strike. In such a scenario, some, like Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., have &nbsp;suggested the U.S. simply airstrike the Iranian nuclear sites.
"I campaigned for no more foreign wars...And now we are supposedly on the verge of going to war with Iran," said Greene.
Slamming the recent US-Ukraine mineral deal, she then questioned, "So why on earth would we go over and occupy Ukraine and spend an untold amount of future American taxpayer dollars defending and mining their minerals as well as potentially putting American lives at risk and future war?"
"Why don't we just mine our own rare earth minerals that are tied up on federal lands that the government confiscated years ago?," she asked in her over 650-word post, which concluded with the dire warning: "When you are losing MTG, you are losing the base".

Tanks, howitzers, helicopters and 6,000 troops could soon storm through Washington, DC, not for war &mdash; but for a military spectacle straight out of US President Donald Trump's vision for American might and his birthday celebrations.
As the US Army prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump-0">Donald Trump</a>, as per reports, is pushing for a massive military parade that would double as a patriotic pageant and a power play. It just so happens to coincide with his 79th birthday on June 14.

Taking to X, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly wrote: Trump "will honour American Veterans, active-duty service members, and military history with a military parade!"
As per US Army spokeswoman Heather Hagan, the celebration of the US Army's birthday will feature fireworks and a festival on the National Mall.
She further revealed that the grand celebration would feature "approximately 150 vehicles, 50 aircraft, and 6,600 soldiers".

"Given the significant milestone of 250 years, the Army is exploring options to make the celebration even bigger, with more capability demonstrations, additional displays of equipment, and more engagement with the community," Hagan said.
The parade, as per a Daily Mail report citing DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, would run through the heart of the capital &mdash; from Arlington across the Potomac into downtown DC &mdash; a route not unlike those used by other world powers to flaunt their military muscle.
"We're going to start celebrating our victories again," declared Trump on Truth Social on Thursday night. He also announced that he was "renaming May 8th as Victory Day for World War II and November 11th as Victory Day for World War I".

<h2>Trump's Bastille Day-like celebration plans &ndash; rebooted</h2>
Apparently, this isn't Trump's first attempt at a grand parade. His desire for military pageantry began during his first term after watching France's Bastille Day celebrations in Paris alongside the then-French President Emmanuel Macron.
But his earlier plan was estimated by the Pentagon to cost a whopping $92 million and was shelved amid resistance and concerns over tanks destroying DC roads.

Trump planning massive military parade to mark army’s 250th anniversary — and his birthday. Deets inside

Donald Trump on Friday (May 2) shrugged off growing fears of an American recession, saying that the short-term pain is OK as his policies take root.
Appearing in a clip of a pre-recorded interview with NBC's "Meet the Press with Kristen Welker" released on Friday, Trump shrugged off recession fears. This comes despite new government data confirming that the US economy, in the first three months of Trump's second presidency, contracted unexpectedly in the first quarter.
<h2>A 'transition period'</h2>
Striking an upbeat tone, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/trump-0">Trump</a>&nbsp;insisted that his economic blueprint &mdash; including aggressive tariffs &mdash; would eventually spark "the greatest boom in history."

"This is a transition period. I think we're going to do fantastically," he told NBC News. The full interview is due to be released on Sunday (May 4).
<h2>Recession fears vs Trump's optimism</h2>
Asked directly whether he was "comfortable with the country potentially dipping into a recession for a period of time" if he were able to achieve his long-term goals, the US president evaded a direct answer and instead said, "Some people on Wall Street say that we're going to have the greatest economy in history. Why don't you talk about them?"&nbsp;
When pressed about whether he worried about a recession, Trump replied, "Anything can happen".&nbsp;

"But I think we're going to have the greatest economy in the history of our country. I think we're going have the greatest economic boom in history," he added as per excerpts of the interview.
His comments come amid growing unease on Wall Street and in global financial circles, with economists warning that a recession &mdash; triggered by Trump's tariffs &mdash; is increasingly likely.&nbsp;
According to Apollo Global's chief economist, Torsten Slok, the chances of such a "Voluntary Trade Reset Recession" now stand at a staggering 90 per cent.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is due to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday (May 06), according to a report by Bloomberg. This will be their first face-to-face meeting since Carney came to power following an election campaign that partly focused on pushing back against Trump&rsquo;s influence.
<h2>First meeting since anti-Trump election win</h2>
The exact details of the visit are still being finalised, but Carney&rsquo;s office confirmed that the two leaders spoke by phone recently. During that call, President Trump congratulated Carney on his election win.

&ldquo;The two leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the United States working together &ndash; as independent, sovereign nations &ndash; for their mutual betterment,&rdquo; Carney&rsquo;s office said in a statement on Tuesday.
<h2>Trump&rsquo;s remark on '51st state' sparks concern</h2>
The White House also commented on the Canadian election outcome. Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said,
&ldquo;The election does not affect President Trump&rsquo;s plan to make Canada America&rsquo;s cherished 51st state.&rdquo;

Trump had already hinted at the meeting during a Cabinet session earlier this week, saying Carney would visit &ldquo;within the next week or less.&rdquo;
<h2>Why is the Trump-Carney meeting important for Canada?</h2>
The upcoming meeting carries significant weight for Prime Minister Carney, who led the Liberal Party to victory with a firm stance on resetting Canada&rsquo;s relationship with the US. He had promised during his campaign to resolve the ongoing trade tensions between the two countries.
Carney made headlines in his victory speech, saying, "We are over the shock of American betrayal. But we should never forget the lessons.&rdquo;

He had also dismissed Trump&rsquo;s repeated statements about absorbing Canada as a US state, declaring the traditional economic and security partnership with Washington as "over."
The leaders first spoke by phone on 28 March, two weeks after Carney officially replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister. Carney said the two had agreed to begin comprehensive trade and security discussions once the election dust had settled.
A seasoned figure in global finance, Carney previously served as a central banker in both Canada and the UK. He became prime minister last month after Trudeau&rsquo;s resignation, which followed a drop in public support.

‘51st state’ threat, trade tensions: Trump, Canada’s Mark Carney to meet after 'anti-Trump' election win | What’s at stake

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trumps-big-announcement-nsa-mike-waltz-replaced-by-us-state-secretary-marco-rubio-waltz-nominated-as-us-ambassador-to-un-9023871">Mike Waltz</a>'s exit from the National Security Advisor (NSA) post marked the first major departure from US President Donald Trump's cabinet in his second term. Trump wants to send him to the United Nations (UN) as an ambassador and Secretary of State Marco Rubio has taken over as the new NSA. While Mike Waltz's exit is linked to the 'Signal Gate' scandal, it may also be something related to Trump's old habit - as many as six NSAs served in Trump's first tenure, with two being temporarily given the charge. Though Trump has praised Waltz in his post announcing his departure, it remains to be seen if Rubio will stick to the NSA's position for five full years or if he is filling the post temporarily.&nbsp;

1. Michael Flynn
Donald Trump's first NSA in his first term - Michael Flynn - resigned after just 23 days in the role. He faced allegations of misleading the then Vice President Mike Pence and other top White House officials about his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States. He later agreed and even wrote in his resignation letter that he had given &ldquo;incomplete information&rdquo; regarding a telephone call with the then Ambassador Sergey Kislyak about American sanctions against Russia, ahead of Trump's inauguration.The White House,&nbsp;in the statement, said that it was replacing Flynn with retired Lt. Gen. Joseph K. Kellogg Jr. of the Army, a Vietnam War veteran, as acting national security adviser.
2.&nbsp;Joseph Keith&nbsp;Kellogg Jr
Kellogg was named acting NSA after Flynn left the post. Kellogg who had served 36 years in the military: in the army in Vietnam, as a special forces officer in Cambodia, and during the first Iraq war as&nbsp;chief of staff&nbsp;for the 82nd Airborne Division, was largely a confidant of Trump. However, he was not chosen for the permanent NSA, despite Trump saying that he was "very much in play" for the post.

3. HR McMaster
After seven days of interviewing various candidates, Trump chose HR McMaster, an army lieutenant general, as his NSA. McMaster was widely respected in US defence circles. Trump called McMaster &ldquo;a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience&rdquo;, however, his praise for the man was short-lived. He served as Trump's NSA for one year and 48 days. Trump publicly criticised Gen McMaster after he told a forum in Germany it was "incontrovertible" that Russians had meddled in the 2016 presidential election. He was also displeased with the NSA as he planned to send more American forces to Afghanistan.&nbsp;"He wants to send more troops to Afghanistan, so we're going to send him," Trump had said. And thus, his exit from the White House happened. Nevertheless, Trump did not forget to thank him for his service: "Outstanding job &amp; will always remain my friend," Trump said in a tweet.

4. John Bolton
John Bolton became Trump's third NSA in just 14 months of his first term. This Bush-era defence hawk and former United Nations ambassador backed attacking North Korea and Iran, to ensure the president has "the full range of options". However, this bonhomie was soon gone with both men turning so bitter against each other that they even disagreed over how they parted ways - Trump announced on X&nbsp;that he had fired the adviser, while&nbsp;Bolton maintained that he resigned of his own accord. The major point of difference between them arose in handling major foreign policy challenges like Iran, North Korea and Afghanistan. He served in the Trump cabinet for 17 months.

5. Charles Kupperman
After Bolton's exit, the White House named Charles Kupperman, the deputy national security adviser, to temporarily fill the key post. However, Kupperman was Bolton's right-hand man and after the souring of relations between Trump and Bolton, he was not in a strong position to influence Trump's thinking and it was not long before Trump chose his next NSA after eight days.
6. Robert O'Brien
<div data-component="text-block" class="sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf">
The last NSA who served under Trump in his first term was Robert O'Brien. He&nbsp;had a long career in foreign policy working for both main US parties and heading hostage negotiations at the State Department.&nbsp;"Robert has been fantastic..."We know each other well."," Trump had said, praising his work with hostages. O'Brien had taken up the role saying it was a "privilege". He served for one year 124 days.

<h2>Mike Waltz's exit</h2>
Mike Waltz became the centre of controversy in Trump's cabinet after he mistakenly added The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg in a Signal group chat where top security officials discussed plans for a military strike on Houthi targets in Yemen. The group also included Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Waltz later took "full responsibility" for the 'embarrassing' mistake.&nbsp;
Though Trump has now shown him the exit door of the White House, he did defend Waltz calling him "a good man" who "learned a lesson." Even in his post on Thursday, Trump praised Waltz for his "hard work" in the US administration.&nbsp;"From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation&rsquo;s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. The US president reportedly faced pressure from people inside his cabinet to terminate Waltz after the 'Signal Gate' scandal.&nbsp;

Trump publicly criticised Gen McMaster after he told a forum in Germany it was "incontrovertible" that Russians had meddled in the 2016 presidential election. He was also displeased with the NSA as he planned to send more American forces to Afghanistan. "He wants to send more troops to Afghanistan, so we're going to send him," Trump had said. And thus, his exit from the White House happened. Nevertheless, Trump did not forget to thank him for his service: "Outstanding job & will always remain my friend," Trump said in a tweet. This Bush-era defence hawk and former United Nations ambassador backed attacking North Korea and Iran, to ensure the president has "the full range of options". However, this bonhomie was soon gone with both men turning so bitter against each other that they even disagreed over how they parted ways - Trump announced on X that he had fired the adviser, while Bolton maintained that he resigned of his own accord. The major point of difference between them arose in handling major foreign policy challenges like Iran, North Korea and Afghanistan. He served in the Trump cabinet for 17 months. Charles Kupperman After Bolton's exit, the White House named Charles Kupperman, the deputy national security adviser, to temporarily fill the key post. However, Kupperman was Bolton's right-hand man and after the souring of relations between Trump and Bolton, he was not in a strong position to influence Trump's thinking and it was not long before Trump chose his next NSA after eight days. 6. Robert O'Brien The last NSA who served under Trump in his first term was Robert O'Brien. He had a long career in foreign policy working for both main US parties and heading hostage negotiations at the State Department. "Robert has been fantastic..."We know each other well."," Trump had said, praising his work with hostages. O'Brien had taken up the role saying it was a "privilege". He served for one year 124 days. US President Donald Trump seemed to take a jab at Elon Musk, calling out the billionaire just days after he reportedly moved out of his White House workspace.
Speaking to graduating students at the University of Alabama on Thursday (May 01), Trump offered life advice, touched on political issues, and took a surprising dig at his so-called &ldquo;first buddy.&rdquo;
<h2>'Now they&rsquo;re kissing my a**'</h2>
While discussing the importance of disrupting outdated systems, Trump veered off-topic to talk about how tech billionaires have changed their stance on him since his first term.
&ldquo;Change is never easy, and the closer you get to success, the more ferociously those with a vested interest in the past will resist you,&rdquo; Trump said.

Trump's NSA Mike Waltz, guy involved in 'Signalgate' scandal, to leave White House: Reports

Former Vice President Kamala Harris in her first major speech since leaving office, criticised US President Donald Trump, while also accusing him of the "greatest made-made economic crisis in modern presidential history".&nbsp;
While rebuking her former rival, Harris took note of major policy shifts brought by Trump, which led to a crisis in America.&nbsp;
She blamed Trump's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tariff">tariff</a>&nbsp;policies, and immigration crackdown, among other policy changes, saying that it poses the risk of taking the US into recession.&nbsp;
Harris was speaking in San Francisco at a gala event for the organization Emerge America, which helps women run for office.

"Some people are describing what's been happening in recent months as absolute chaos. And of course, I understand why. It's certainly true of those tariffs. Tariffs that &mdash; as I predicted &mdash; are clearly inviting a recession," Harris said.
She further applauded those Americans who are rallying against the tariffs, saying that they will increase everyday costs and impact retirement accounts and small businesses.
Harris said, "Instead of an administration working to advance America&rsquo;s highest ideals, we are witnessing the wholesale abandonment of those ideals.&rdquo;

Stressing that Trump and his allies are counting on the notion that fear can be contagious, Harris said, "They are counting on the notion that, if they can make some people afraid, it will have a chilling effect on others. But what they&rsquo;ve overlooked is that fear isn&rsquo;t the only thing that&rsquo;s contagious. Courage is contagious.&rdquo;

Harris, who herself is a child of immigrants, also called out the Trump administration's deportations of lawful residents, including university students, and its interrogation of US citizens.&nbsp;

She also lauded Democrats who are standing up against Trump and his administration. Harris warned that &ldquo;things are probably going to get worse before they get better,&rdquo; but also expressed confidence that Democrats were &ldquo;ready&rdquo; to face the moment.

‘China getting absolutely hammered’: Trump says Beijing doing ‘very poorly’ due to US tariffs

President Donald Trump plans to mitigate his automotive tariff impact through an executive order which unites tax benefits with foreign parts and materials eligibility exceptions that will be made available on Tuesday. The executive order follows opposition from automobile companies regarding the economic harm that could arise from the tariffs.
The modified automotive policy enables American vehicle manufacturers to claim credits worth 15 percent of their domestic product manufacturing value. The administration gives companies the ability to reduce their expenses through part import costs using these credits which allows time to shift their supply chains into U.S. territories according to a senior official.
The company official stated that car manufacturers receive duty-free permission to import parts worth 3.75 percent of domestic production sticker price during year one and 2.5 percent in the following year. The third-year elimination of the credit benefit will encourage firms to relocate their parts production operations within the U.S. borders.
All auto parts and vehicles covered by these tariffs gain an exemption from all other global levies that President Trump has placed on Canadian-Mexican products and steel/aluminum imports as well as all other international goods. Sections dealing with North American components that conduct business under USMCA standards are not affected by the new exemptions.

The official from the administration stated that the business advantage of manufacturing cars abroad for importation purposes will decrease substantially. Automakers must submit either automobile import taxes or steel and aluminum import taxes depending on which total amount is highest.
The planned relief does not cover Chinese automotive components since they must endure increased 145% duties accompanied by existing duties imposed by Trump.
President Trump has planned a trip to Michigan during Tuesday when he will cross his first 100 day mark as commander in chief. The Detroit Three manufacturers along with various automotive suppliers maintain their operations in this state.
This move to ease auto tariffs reflects the administration's attempt to balance its trade policies with the need to mitigate economic disruption. The tariffs have caused turmoil in financial markets and raised concerns about a potential economic slowdown.
The first quarterly GDP report under Trump's term, due Wednesday, is expected to show a significant drag from the tariffs, primarily due to a surge in imports as companies front-loaded purchases to avoid the new levies. Economists predict a 0.3% annualized growth rate for the first quarter, down from 2.4% in the previous quarter.

US President Donald Trump has time and again expressed his desire to run for the presidency again. He had also claimed that he has 'methods' for doing so. While the US Constitution under the 22nd Amendment bars any individual from running for the presidency for the third time, Trump supporters have said that the law can be interpreted differently as well. Any such manoeuvre would invite legal challenges, and courts would be asked to interpret the meaning of the 22nd Amendment.

The Trump administration plans to introduce measures on Tuesday which will reduce the automotive industry impacts from their newly implemented tariffs by offering support to domestic producers while responding to industry worries. The officials explained this step would reduce fees on components from foreign countries entering production of U.S.-built vehicles and stop the growth of tariffs on imported vehicles.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick declared that the administration aims to establish connections with both American automakers and their workers. The trade policy's major win comes through this agreement that rewards companies which produce their products within U.S. borders according to Lutnick.
According to the Wall Street Journal data reveals that the relief package will protect car manufacturers from extra tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Remember that this package includes money reimbursements for past sections 301 tariff payments. The White House official validated the news by announcing the new policy would officially take effect through a formal statement on Tuesday.

Numerous auto suppliers and the Detroit Three automakers together make the state their industrial base. The administration continues its efforts to minimize economic challenges caused by their auto tariffs through this recent policy revision. Both General Motors and Ford joined numerous manufacturers to endorse the planned trade changes. GM CEO Mary Barra together with Ford CEO Jim Farley commended the administration for its efforts to establish market fairness which supports U.S. economic growth. The coalitions composed of U.S. auto industry groups made their appeal to the administration to avoid applying 25% tariffs on vehicle parts imported into the United States while sharing their forecast of market declines and price surges. The organizations highlighted numerous adverse influences that tariffs would have on worldwide automotive supply system operations and the numerous potential disruptions they would create. The letter, addressed to key administration officials, highlighted the financial vulnerability of many auto suppliers and the potential for production stoppages and job losses. The industry groups argued that tariffs on auto parts would ultimately harm consumers and the overall automotive sector.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a sudden three-day ceasefire from 8 to 10 May, to coincide with Moscow's annual World War II Victory Day events, the Kremlin said on Monday.
In a statement, the Kremlin added, "Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example. In the event of violations of the truce by the Ukrainian side, the Russian armed forces will give an adequate and effective response."

<h2 data-start="502" data-end="740">Not the first time</h2>
This is not the first time Moscow has declared a temporary truce. Putin had earlier called for a ceasefire over Easter. However, Ukraine reported that Russian forces had breached the truce nearly 3,000 times during that period.
Russia has often claimed it is open to peace talks, yet at the same time has continued making sweeping demands. Ukraine has dismissed these conditions, accusing Moscow of using the prospect of negotiations as a propaganda move.
Speaking earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov insisted that any indication of a willingness to resume direct peace talks should come from Ukraine. "It should come from Kyiv. They should at least take some action in this regard. They still have a legal ban on this. We have not seen any action so far," Peskov said when asked whether Russia expected signals from Washington or Kyiv itself.

Kremlin's surprise ceasefire announcement comes days after US President Donald Trump slammed Russian President Vladimir Putin questioning whether the Kremlin truly wants to end the war in Ukraine, suggesting that tougher measures might be needed.

'Ukraine should follow this example': Russia's Putin announces surprise three-day ceasefire: Did Trump effect finally work?

US President Donald Trump launched a fierce attack on the media on Saturday (April 26), claiming that any peace deal he secures in the Russia-Ukraine war would be unfairly criticised.
In a lengthy post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, "No matter what deal I make with respect to Russia/Ukraine, no matter how good it is, even if it&rsquo;s the greatest deal ever made, The Failing New York Times will speak BADLY of it."

He went on to criticise journalist Peter Baker, saying, "Liddle&rsquo; Peter Baker, the very biased and untalented writer for The Times, followed his Editor&rsquo;s demands and wrote that Ukraine should get back territory, including, I suppose, Crimea, and other ridiculous requests, in order to stop the killing that is worse than anything since World War II."
Trump also pointed fingers at former President Barack Obama over the loss of Crimea, adding, "Why doesn&rsquo;t this lightweight reporter say that it was Obama who made it possible for Russia to steal Crimea from Ukraine without even a shot being fired. It was also Liddle&rsquo; Peter who wrote an absolutely fawning, yet terribly written Biography, on Obama. It was a JOKE! Did Baker ever criticize the Obama Crimea Giveaway? NO, not once, only TRUMP."

A controversy has broken out over US President Donald Trump's seating arrangement at Pope Francis' funeral mass, that will be held on Saturday. Pope Francis passed away on April 21, aged 88.&nbsp;
As per a report on DailyMail, Trump is expected to get a 'third-tier seat' despite being among the first to confirm that he would be attending the service. Trump would miss the front row because as per precedence front row would be given to Catholic royalty. Reports also suggest that the seating arrangement is not in order of importance but according to alphabetical order &mdash; in French. Thus, the US President may have to sit between African leaders and near French President Emmanuel Macron. Reports say that the arrangement as per Italian alphabetical order would have seen Trump and Ukrainian President Vlodymyr Zelenskyy sitting uncomfortably close together.

It is noteworthy to recall that Trump had mocked his predecessor Joe Biden for being seated at the rear at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral three years ago. He said that Biden's 14th row seat showed there was 'no respect' for the US anymore and alleged that if he was president he would have been moved closer to the front. It remains to be seen if Trump is displeased or irked by the seating arrangement.&nbsp;

Trump mocked Biden for seating arrangement at Queen's farewell: Will he be upset with his seat at Pope's funeral?

Crimea has been the latest bone of contention between Russia, Ukraine and the United States. The US, which is eager to finalise a peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv to effectively end the Russia-Ukraine war, has called out Ukrainian President Zelenskyy's insistence on giving away Crimea to Russia. US president Donald Trump has accused the Ukrainian leader of making &ldquo;very harmful&rdquo; statements after he pushed back on ceding occupied Crimea to Russia as a part of the peace deal.
<h2>What is the history of Crimea?</h2>
The history of Crimea is long, complex, and marked by a constant shift in control between several powers. Back in 1200s, the land was controlled by the Mongols. In the 15th century, it became a vassal of the Ottoman Empire.
The first Russian invasion of Crimea happened in 1783 when Catherine the Great annexed Crimea from the Ottomans, expanding Russian control over the Black Sea. In the 19th century Crimean War (1853&ndash;1856).&nbsp;Russia unsuccessfully fought against Britain, France, and the Ottoman Empire but Sevastopol remained a key naval port. In the Soviet era of 20th century, Crimea became an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the Russian SFSR. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev transferred Crimea from the Russian SFSR to the Ukrainian SSR (both part of the USSR) in 1954. Crimea became part of independent Ukraine, with autonomous status after the fall of USSR.

However, due to Russia's monopoly over the strategic port of Sevastopol, pro-Russian sentiments remained high in this region despite Crimea being part of Ukraine.&nbsp;
In November 2013, the then President of Crimea - Viktor Yanukovych - abruptly rejected a trade agreement with the European Union (EU), choosing instead closer ties with Russia. This paved the way for Euromaidan Protests that soon turned violent amid police using force. Hundreds of protesters were killed, and Yanukovych eventually fled to Russia by February 2014. Ukraine&rsquo;s parliament declared him unable to fulfill his duties and installed an interim government. This was also called the Ukrainian Revolution, however, Russia claimed it was a coup. The Revolution redirected Ukraine's course towards the West.
However, the political vacuum in Kyiv allowed Russia to act quickly in Crimea. In late February 2014, unmarked soldiers, termed as &ldquo;Little Green Men&rdquo; and confirmed to be Russian troops, seized key buildings and infrastructure in Crimea. At the time, Russia denied that they were Russian troops. Crimea&rsquo;s parliament was under siege and eventually voted to hold a referendum on joining Russia.
In March 2014, a referendum was held under Russian military presence, with two choices: join Russia or return to the 1992 constitution (which gave Crimea more autonomy). The ballot reportedly did not include an option to stay in Ukraine.&nbsp;Official results claimed 97 per cent supported joining Russia, though the vote was widely condemned as unfair by Ukraine. Russia formally annexed Crimea, signing a treaty with local pro-Russian leaders.

1. Strategic Location:&nbsp;Crimea gives direct access to the Black Sea, a crucial waterway for trade and military presence. Control of Crimea allows dominance over sea routes in the region.
2. Geopolitical Leverage: From Crimea, Russia can project power into the Mediterranean and Middle East, especially through its naval base at Sevastopol.
3. Military Significance: Sevastopol Naval Base is home to Russia&rsquo;s Black Sea Fleet. It&rsquo;s one of the few warm-water ports Russia can use year-round, which is critical for naval strategy.
4. Natural Resources and Economy:&nbsp;Crimea has offshore energy resources, including oil and gas in the Black Sea shelf.&nbsp;Control of Crimea gives Russia influence over regional energy supplies and maritime economic zones.

<h2>Trump slams Zelensky over Crimea&nbsp;</h2>
Earlier on April 19, it was reported that the Trump administration would walk away from the mediation role if both Russia and Ukraine did not seal a deal soon. Multiple reports claimed that America might recognise Russian control of Crimea as part of the peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv. Following this, Zelensky said that Crimea is "the land of the Ukrainian people."
US President Trump came down heavily on Zelensky and said that if it was so important for Ukraine to have control over Crimea, why didn't they fight for it in 2014. &ldquo;Nobody is asking Zelenskyy to recognize Crimea as Russian Territory but if he wants Crimea, why didn&rsquo;t they fight for it eleven years ago when it was handed over to Russia without a shot being fired?&rdquo; he posted on Truth Social.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president said that talks were held in London between the US, Ukrainian and European officials, despite US Secretary of State Marco Rubio cancelling his trip. Rubio reportedly cancelled his trip after Ukraine said that "it would not enter negotiations on territorial issues until a full and unconditional ceasefire is achieved." As per reports, the ministerial-level talks were downgraded, however, Zelensky said that the meeting was marked by heightened emotions and that he hopes future talks would be positive with allies. Al Jazeera reported that Trump&rsquo;s Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg called the talks with Zelenskyy&rsquo;s chief of staff Andriy Yermak "positive."
US peace plan reportedly accommodates Russia's two major demands - control over Crimea and cancellation of any talks on Ukraine's NATO membership. Ukraine and critics have called the plan in favour of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump's Russia-Ukraine peace plan meets Crimea roadblock: Why Russia wants it desperately? What is its history?

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> has said that talks with China are underway to reach a new agreement on tariffs and claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping recently called him. In an interview published by Time magazine on Friday (April 25), Trump said, &ldquo;He&rsquo;s called. And I don&rsquo;t think that&rsquo;s a sign of weakness on his behalf.&rdquo;
Trump did not say when the call happened or what was discussed, but he expressed confidence that a deal could be finalised soon. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ll be finished making US deals on tariffs in about three or four weeks,&rdquo; he added. When asked if maintaining tariffs as high as 50% in a year would be considered a win, Trump replied, &ldquo;Total victory.&rdquo;

<h2>China responds with economic plans amid trade pressures</h2>
Meanwhile, in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping chaired a key politburo meeting on Friday to address the country's ongoing economic troubles and the lasting effects of the US trade war. According to a statement released by state media outlet Xinhua, the meeting discussed the &ldquo;positive trend&rdquo; in the economy but acknowledged that &ldquo;the impact of external shocks has increased.&rdquo;
The politburo called for greater preparedness and resilience, emphasising the need to protect businesses and citizens from external pressures, including US tariffs. The statement said China must &ldquo;oppose unilateral bullying practices&rdquo; and push for stronger multilateral cooperation.

To stabilise the domestic economy, the meeting proposed several support measures. These include boosting unemployment insurance payouts, increasing incomes for low- and middle-income groups, expanding the service industry, and encouraging consumer spending.
The government also pledged to offer more financial help to struggling businesses, strengthen trade integration, and speed up housing and urban renewal projects.
The meeting came amid reports that China may cut or remove some of the steep tariffs, currently at 125%, placed on US goods. According to sources cited by Bloomberg and Reuters, items such as semiconductors, medical equipment, and certain industrial chemicals like ethane are being considered for exemption.

‘Xi called me’: Trump claims ‘total victory’ as China signals tariff retreat; Xi plans economic rescue as Beijing reels

As the United States scrambles for trade deals with nations before the 90-day tariff pause ends, South Korea has proposed a 'July Package' in an effort to avoid US tariffs. The export-driven economy of South Korea stands to lose a lot if tariffs are imposed, particularly for major firms like Samsung and Hyundai.
South Korea's ministers have been vocal about the long-term potential damage these tariffs could cause to the $100 billion trade between the two nations. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently said the countries have agreed to a framework for future consultations. Additional discussions are scheduled during the APEC trade ministers' meeting in Seoul this May.
<h2>South Korea's economy braces for tariffs</h2>
South Korea's central bank reported a 0.1 per cent contraction in GDP for the first quarter of 2025. The decline is attributed to market volatility tied to tariff concerns, along with domestic instability. While the US believes the talks are 'very successful,' officials in South Korea are racing to Fast-track the deal.
