Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Sanjay Malhotra on Wednesday said it is not inflation but US President Donald Trump's trade tariffs which is more concerning to the central bank. During the first bi-monthly press conference of the fiscal year, the governor also mentioned that the tariff-related uncertainties are the reason the RBI has lowered India's GDP growth forecast.
Donald Trump has been on a tariff spree; the reciprocal tariffs on India include a 26% tax on goods. Now, India is not the only country; these taxes range from 10% to 49%, the highest.

In his address Malhotra said, "The recent trade tariff-related measures have exacerbated uncertainties clouding the economic outlook across regions, posing new headwinds for global growth and inflation."
"Amidst this turbulence, the US dollar has weakened appreciably; bond yields have softened significantly; equity markets are correcting; and crude oil prices have fallen to their lowest in over three years," he added.
Talking about the impact on the country, he said, "We have a comparative advantage." Indicating that this is better than that of other countries.
<h2>More on Trump tariff:</h2>
Trump has been imposing tariffs on the left, right, and centre. This will affect goods worth millions of dollars entering the country. Will this add to the woes of Americans? So far, Trump has imposed taxes ranging from 10% to 49%; the latter is for 'worst offenders'. Canada and Mexico have currently been exempted from these scathing tariffs, though they, along with China, are already paying taxes on select products.
These tariffs have hit even on the world's remotest region &ndash; a place ruled by penguins, seals, and birds. Heard and McDonald Islands &ndash; the icy archipelago does not have a single human on the land. The last time people visited is believed to be about a decade ago.

"We are going to tariff pharma in such a way that companies will come rushing to us very soon. The advantage we have is, we are very big market. Very shortly, will announce major tariffs on pharma and when these companies hear that, they will leave China and other countries because most of their products are sold here. Trump mocks world leaders, claims 'countries are calling us up, kissing my a**,' to negotiate tariffs

Amid worldwide backlash to the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has told the Senate Finance Committee that nearly 50 countries have approached him and are willing to lower tariffs, including India. He said that Trump's tariff move is bearing fruit as more and more countries are ready for negotiations.
&ldquo;Nearly 50 countries have approached me personally to discuss the President's new policy and explore how to achieve reciprocity. And they've spoken with many members of the administration. Several of these, such as Argentina, Vietnam, India, and Israel, have suggested that they will reduce their tariffs and non-tariff barriers in line with the President's policy,&rdquo; Greer said.

Greer added that while the United States maintains an average 5 per cent tariff on agricultural goods, India&rsquo;s average tariff stands at 39 per cent. India has been tariffed 26 per cent and is among the countries hit the hardest. The tariffs would come into effect starting Wednesday (Apr 9).
The comments by Greer echo US National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett's disclosure over the weekend that more countries have reached out to the White House for trade negotiations.
"These obviously are welcome moves. Our large and persistent trade deficit has been over 30 years in the making, and it will not be resolved overnight, but all of this is in the right direction," Greer added.&nbsp;

India, several other countries willing to lower tariffs: Donald Trump administration official

The top US trade official on Tuesday defended President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on nearly every other nation, telling US senators that with dozens of countries seeking a deal the strategy was "already bearing fruit."
Jamieson Greer's appearance in Congress came with Republicans ringing alarm bells over Trump's escalating trade war and Wall Street clamoring for clarity on the president's plans after a historic market sell-off.
"Nearly 50 countries have approached me personally to discuss the president's new policy and explore how to achieve reciprocity," he told the Senate Finance Committee, a figure that other administration officials have also cited.&nbsp;
Several countries -- including Argentina, Vietnam and Israel -- had offered to reduce their tariffs, Greer said, while auto manufacturers were canceling layoffs and companies had announced $4 trillion in new investment in the United States.
The annual hearings on the president's trade policies are often staid affairs.
But they have generated more interest this year after Trump last week announced a baseline tariff of 10 percent and extra levies of up to 50 percent on countries selling more to Americans than they buy in return.
Greer said the country had shed five million manufacturing jobs and 90,000 factories in the last 30 years, since a trilateral free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada was enacted.
"We must move away from an economy based solely on the financial sector and government spending, and we must become an economy based on producing real goods and services," he added.
Senior Republican lawmakers have pledged to allow Trump time to see how his tariff gambit plays out, but are desperate to see progress on trade negotiations they believe will calm markets.&nbsp;
Wall Street stocks surged higher early Tuesday after a three-day rout as global markets rallied in hopes of trade agreements.
<h2>'No clear message'</h2>
But rank-and-file lawmakers remain jittery about the effect of the tariffs and have been demanding briefings on the strategy, with some even seeking to remove Trump's authority to raise import levies.
Republican Senator Chuck Grassley is leading a bipartisan effort to require congressional approval of tariffs within 60 days, although it is not expected to get a floor vote.
Four Republican senators voted with Democrats last week to pass a symbolic resolution to undo Trump's tariff on Canada that does not have the force of law.
Trump himself ruled out any pause in his aggressive new global trade policy on Monday, and threatened to slap an additional 50 percent tariff on China over its retaliation.
He also dismissed the possibility of a trade deal with the European Union and called his critics on trade "weak and stupid" while pledging to veto Grassley's bill.
The top Democrat on the finance committee, Ron Wyden, assailed the White House for having "no clear message" about how Trump determined his tariffs and how long he plans to keep them up.&nbsp;
He suggested Trump was deliberately tanking the economy to bring down interest rates, making borrowing cheaper for the rich.
Greer never had much hope of persuading Democrats over Trump's trade policies, but his overtures did not appear to reassure skeptics on the Republican side either.
"Whose throat do I get to choke if this proves to be wrong?" asked North Carolina free trade advocate Thom Tillis.
Greer's appearance was the first of two annual hearings on the president's trade policies. He will be grilled by the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday.

‘Whose throat do I choke if this fails?’: Senators grill Trump’s trade chief as tariffs spark backlash

The United States will slap a 104% tariff on Chinese goods starting from 12:01 AM Eastern Time (12:01 PM Beijing time) on Wednesday, according to a White House official. The move comes after China failed to remove its retaliatory tariffs on American products before a deadline set by Donald Trump for noon on Tuesday.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Donald Trump is taking a &ldquo;custom, tailor-made&rdquo; approach to trade with each country. That could include talks around military presence or foreign aid, depending on America&rsquo;s priorities.
&ldquo;Negotiations will be based on America&rsquo;s needs,&rdquo; she said.

Leavitt revealed that around 70 countries have contacted the US to begin trade discussions. &ldquo;Countries are falling over themselves to reform their unfair trade,&rdquo; she added.
&ldquo;These countries greatly respect President Trump in the sheer power of the American market. These countries realise they've gotten filthy rich by imposing substantial tariffs on American-made products,&rdquo; she said.
She also described Trump as having a &ldquo;spine of steel&rdquo; and insisted he would not back down in the face of retaliatory tariffs, including those from China.

He ended the post by mentioning China, saying he is waiting for them to reach out. &ldquo;China also wants to make a deal, badly, but they don&rsquo;t know how to get it started. In another Truth Social post from Monday, Trump had warned that if China did not roll back what he described as a &ldquo;34% increase above their already long term trading abuses&rdquo; by April 8, the US would respond with an additional 50% tariff, effective from April 9. He also said talks with China would be cancelled, and the US would immediately begin negotiations with other countries that had requested meetings.
&ldquo;Thank you for your attention to this matter!&rdquo; Trump added.

‘China wants a deal, badly’: Trump slaps 104% tariff after Beijing defies ultimatum, says 'waiting for their call'

Tesla CEO Elon Musk made direct appeals to US President Donald Trump over the weekend to lift the tariffs amid the rising tensions with US trade allies, according to a Washington Post report.
The report, citing two people familiar with the matter, said that confirmed Musk&rsquo;s attempted intervention has not brought success so far. On Monday (Apr 7), Trump threatened to impose additional 50 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports unless Beijing withdraws the 34 per cent retaliatory tariff on US goods. Although the US president mentioned that he was open to revising some aspects of the plan.

<h2>A divide between Musk and Trump?</h2>
The recent encounter between Trump and Musk appears to be the most significant disagreement, which comes after Trump announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs on dozens of nations.
Some analysts believe Musk&rsquo;s inability to persuade the US president highlights the growing divide between Trump and his top advisor.
The world&rsquo;s richest person has been sharing his views on tariffs through his social media. Recently, Musk posted a video of the late conservative economist Milton Friedman, who touted the benefits of international trade cooperation through what he referred to as &ldquo;the impersonal operation of prices&rdquo;, describing the source materials that make it possible to produce a simple wooden pencil as an example.

Trump&rsquo;s tariffs have shaken the international markets around the world, causing the stock markets to crash on Monday (Apr 7). Trump&rsquo;s billionaire allies, including Musk, saw a decline in their wealth. The Tesla CEO&rsquo;s fortune is seeing a decline of $300 billion for the first time since last year, according to reports.
Recently, Musk attended a conference hosted by Italy&rsquo;s right-wing party advocating for a tariff-free economic zone between the US and the EU.

World | The recent encounter between Trump and Musk appears to be the most significant disagreement, which comes after Trump announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs on dozens of nations.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk made direct appeals to US President Donald Trump over the weekend to lift the tariffs amid the rising tensions with US trade allies, according to a Washington Post report. The report, citing two people familiar with the matter, said that confirmed Musk’s attempted intervention has not brought success so far. On Monday (Apr 7), Trump threatened to impose additional 50 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports unless Beijing withdraws the 34 per cent retaliatory tariff on US goods. Although the US president mentioned that he was open to revising some aspects of the plan. The recent encounter between Trump and Musk appears to be the most significant disagreement, which comes after Trump announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs on dozens of nations. Some analysts believe Musk’s inability to persuade the US president highlights the growing divide between Trump and his top advisor. The world’s richest person has been sharing his views on tariffs through his social media. Recently, Musk posted a video of the late conservative economist Milton Friedman, who touted the benefits of international trade cooperation through what he referred to as “the impersonal operation of prices”, describing the source materials that make it possible to produce a simple wooden pencil as an example. Musk and Trump growing apart? Billionaire tried to persuade US president to lift tariffs, report claims

A deepening trade row with China could cost US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/blame-china-not-trump-piyush-goyal-says-beijings-malpractices-created-trade-imbalance-8940424">Donald Trump</a> more than he expected; it might threaten his dream aircraft, the F-47 fighter jet that's named after him.
<h2>Beijing hits back with rare earth restrictions</h2>
In response to Trump&rsquo;s decision to raise tariffs on most Chinese imports to 54%, Beijing has imposed new export controls on rare earth elements and key finished products. These materials are vital for advanced electronics, especially in military aircraft.
The move could deal a blow to the US defence industry, just weeks after Trump announced that Boeing had won the contract to build the F-47, a new fighter jet designed to replace the F-22 Raptor and form the core of the US Air Force&rsquo;s future fleet.

<h2>Rare Earths: The hidden weak spot</h2>
China controls around 90% of global rare earth production. These 17 elements are used in a range of industries, including defence, energy, electric vehicles, and electronics. For defence specifically, around 5% of US rare earth usage supports applications like radars, electric motors, and targeting systems.
The F-35 stealth jet, for example, needs about 920 pounds of rare earth materials per aircraft. These are essential in its advanced avionics, radar and flight control systems. The same will likely apply to the F-47.

<h2>What&rsquo;s being restricted?</h2>
China&rsquo;s new rules apply to seven types of medium and heavy rare earths, including samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium. The controls also cover finished goods such as permanent magnets.
Other strategic metals such as tungsten, tellurium, bismuth, molybdenum, and indium are also under export restrictions, according to the state-run Global Times.
Yttrium, in particular, is key for jet engine coatings, high-frequency radar, and lasers. It helps create thermal barriers on turbine blades, preventing engines from overheating during flight.
Although these measures are not a full ban, they limit export licenses, potentially creating shortages for US manufacturers who rely heavily on Chinese suppliers.
Industry insiders told Reuters that some US aerospace manufacturers are entirely dependent on Chinese sources for rare earths used in avionics. With China able to tighten supply at will, companies may struggle to find alternatives quickly.

<h2>What is China saying?</h2>
China&rsquo;s Ministry of Commerce defended the decision, saying, &ldquo;The Chinese government has implemented export controls on relevant items in accordance with the law in order to better safeguard national security and interests and fulfil international obligations such as non-proliferation.&rdquo;
This response shows that China is prepared to use its dominance in the rare earths market as a geopolitical tool, especially in the face of Trump&rsquo;s aggressive tariff policies.

How Trump’s trade war with China could cost him his dream toy: A jet that's named after him

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Apr 8) talked to South Korea's acting President Han Duck-soo over the phone. This comes a day before Trump&rsquo;s 25 per cent tariffs are set to take effect.
&ldquo;I just had a great call with the Acting President of South Korea,&rdquo; the US president posted on his Truth Social platform.&nbsp;
The phone call marks the first time Trump spoke with any of South Korea's acting leaders since he took office in January. Although the US president had a phone call with now-impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol the day after his victory in the November elections last year, the South Korean leader was suspended from duties.

‘Things are looking good’: Trump holds phone call with South Korea's acting president

China is planning to ban Hollywood movies after vowing to &ldquo;fight to the end&rdquo; against the sweeping tariffs imposed by Donald Trump. This comes after the US president singled out the nation for additional 50 per cent levies in his recent threats.
Beijing will impose more tariffs on US agricultural products entering China and ban US movies in the country, a Chinese journalist linked to the Communist Party told BBC&rsquo;s Radio 4 programme.

Last year, US films grossed $585 million in China, which is around 3.5 per cent of China's $17.71 billion box office, reported Daily Mail.
A ban on upcoming Hollywood releases, including Jurassic World: Rebirth, The Accountant 2 and the Mission Impossible sequel, could result in a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in the Chinese market.

On Monday (Apr 7), Trump threatened to impose an additional 50 per cent tariff on China if Beijing does not back down from its recently introduced retaliatory tariffs of 34 per cent by Tuesday (Apr 8).&nbsp;
If the US president moves forward with his plans to impose the additional tariffs, unless China withdraws its retaliatory levies on the US, the total new duties on Chinese goods this year could rise to 104 per cent.

China has called Trump&rsquo;s recent tariff threats &ldquo;blackmail&rdquo;, planning to ban certain US imports in response.
In a statement, the Chinese commerce ministry said that the US threats were &ldquo;a mistake on top of a mistake, once again exposing the American side's blackmailing nature,&rdquo; urging the US to resolve the differences through dialogue with mutual respect.

China vows to ‘fight’ against Trump’s tariff. Beijing’s plan to ban Hollywood movies could cost US millions

Donald Trump's tariffs look set to hit the supply of various brands that ship to the United States. Several luxury car and watch brands, besides some toy companies, are halting the export of their products to the country because of the massive tariffs. Trump has slapped a baseline tariff of 10 per cent on many countries. For countries that levy high tariffs on US goods entering their region, the percentages are much worse.&nbsp;
<h2>No Jags and Rovers in the US</h2>
America might soon fight itself empty of various brands who do not want to ship goods to the US because of the high tariffs, the New York Post reported. The luxury car market is the first to be hit, with Jaguar, Range Rover and Land Rover vehicles, all made in the United Kingdom, putting the brakes on sending their items to the US until the matter is resolved.

Jaguar Land Rover is owned by India's Tata Motors and has confirmed the temporary suspension. "As we work to address the new trading terms with our business partners, we are taking some short-term actions, including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid- to longer-term plans," JLR said in a statement.
<h2>Luxury Swiss watches held back</h2>
Next on the list are luxury Swiss watches that have held back on shipping their products to the US, hoping to find a resolution. Rolex, Breitling and Audemars Piguet have halted shipping their goods, The Post reported. Erik Boneta, a businessman who sells luxury watches through his company Boneta, Inc., told the publication.&nbsp;

Notably, the tariffs being levied on these goods are 31 per cent. However, Boneta said the Swiss are not going to take any decision in a hurry and won't make the shipping decision official soon. But if the tariffs stay in place, either the cost of making them or the final price paid by the consumers will be affected.&nbsp;

Several major toys made by Basic Fun, a company based in Boca Raton, Florida, will soon dwindle in the US markets as they are manufactured in China. Trump orders removal of White House 'witness tree': 200-year-old magnolia, planted by Andrew Jackson, cut down

Efforts by Vietnam to delay sweeping new US tariffs have been rejected by a top adviser to President Donald Trump. Trump's trade advisor said, "This is not a negotiation, this is a national emergency based on a trade deficit."
<h2>Vietnam offers zero tariffs</h2>
On Sunday, Vietnam&rsquo;s Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son met with US Ambassador Marc E. Knapper and said that the country is willing to drop tariffs on American goods to zero. They hoped that it would help postpone the 46% reciprocal tariffs set to hit Vietnamese imports.

"Vietnam is ready to negotiate to bring the import tariff rate to 0% for US goods, increase procurement of US products that are strong and in demand by Vietnam, and at the same time create more favourable conditions for US enterprises to do business and invest in Vietnam," said a government dispatch on the meeting.
The Vietnamese side also asked for a delay to the new tariffs, which are due to come into force on April 9. In a letter addressed to Trump, President To Lam proposed a 45-day postponement to allow for continued talks.

He described Vietnam as the "poster child for nontariff cheating" and argued that even with tariff reductions, the trade gap would remain enormous.

&ldquo;If you simply lowered our tariffs and they lowered our tariffs to zero, we'd still run about a $120 billion trade deficit with Vietnam,&rdquo; Navarro said.
He accused the country of relabelling Chinese goods as Vietnamese and using unfair tactics such as export subsidies, currency manipulation and fake standards to keep U.S. products out of Asian markets.

'Any country that retaliates..': Trump threatens China with 50% tariffs if Beijing doesn't back down

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-tariffs-global-stock-market-update-latest-asian-indian-freefall-us-recession-trade-war-reciprocal-tariffs-8935169" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> launched a fresh attack on China on Monday (April 7), labelling it &ldquo;the biggest abuser&rdquo; of tariffs. Trump's comments come as European and Asian markets crash due to the impact of his sweeping tariffs announced on Wednesday.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump defended the sweeping tariffs he announced last week, which have shaken markets across Europe and Asia. He claimed the US was finally collecting &ldquo;billions of dollars a week&rdquo; from what he described as &ldquo;abusing countries.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Oil prices are down, interest rates are down (the slow moving Fed should cut rates!), food prices are down, there is NO INFLATION,&rdquo; Trump wrote.

<h2>Market fallout after Trump's tariffs</h2>
Trump&rsquo;s announcement of what his administration has dubbed the biggest tariff package in a century has crashed the financial markets. The sharp increase in tariffs on imports from numerous countries, including a 34% rise in Chinese goods, has led to a major sell-off across global exchanges.

World: In a post on Truth Social, Trump defended the sweeping tariffs he announced last week, which have shaken markets across Europe and Asia.

US President Donald Trump launched a fresh attack on China on Monday (April 7), labelling it “the biggest abuser” of tariffs. Trump's comments come as European and Asian markets crash due to the impact of his sweeping tariffs announced on Wednesday. In a post on Truth Social, Trump defended the sweeping tariffs he announced last week, which have shaken markets across Europe and Asia. He claimed the US was finally collecting “billions of dollars a week” from what he described as “abusing countries.” “Oil prices are down, interest rates are down (the slow moving Fed should cut rates!), food prices are down, there is NO INFLATION,” Trump wrote. “The long-time abused USA is bringing in Billions of Dollars a week from the abusing countries on Tariffs that are already in place. This is despite the fact that the biggest abuser of them all, China, whose markets are crashing, just raised its Tariffs by 34%, on top of its long-term ridiculously high Tariffs (Plus!), not acknowledging my warning for abusing countries not to retaliate,” he said. China on tariffs: 'US seeking hegemony in the name of reciprocity in trade war'

Billionaire investor Bill Ackman has shared his thoughts on US President Donald Trump's tariffs on countries. This matter has been discussed globally, as these tariffs have not spared even seals and penguins.&nbsp;
"The country is 100% behind the president on fixing a global system of tariffs that has disadvantaged the country. But, business is a confidence game and confidence depends on trust. President Donald Trump has elevated the tariff issue to the most important geopolitical issue in the world, and he has gotten everyone&rsquo;s attention. So far, so good," Ackman tweeted.

He highlighted how other countries have taken advantage of the US by protecting their home industries at the expense of millions of American jobs and economic growth.
He said, "But, by placing massive and disproportionate tariffs on our friends and our enemies alike and thereby launching a global economic war against the whole world at once, we are in the process of destroying confidence in our country as a trading partner, as a place to do business, and as a market to invest capital."
Further added, "The president has an opportunity to call a 90-day time out, negotiate and resolve unfair asymmetric tariff deals, and induce trillions of dollars of new investment in our country. If, on the other hand, on April 9th we launch economic nuclear war on every country in the world, business investment will grind to a halt, consumers will close their wallets and pocket books, and we will severely damage our reputation with the rest of the world that will take years and potentially decades to rehabilitate."
Talking of market crashes, Ackman highlighted that when new investments stop, consumers stop spending money, and businesses have no choice but to curtail investment and fire workers.

"It is not just the big companies that will suffer. Small and medium size businesses and entrepreneurs will experience much greater pain. Almost no business can pass through an overnight massive increase in costs to their customers. And that&rsquo;s true even if they have no debt, and, unfortunately, there is a massive amount of leverage in the system."
He added, "The consequences for our country and the millions of our citizens who have supported the president &mdash; in particular low-income consumers who are already under a huge amount of economic stress &mdash; are going to be severely negative. This is not what we voted for."

Trump channelling Elon Musk? France accuses US President of ‘interference’ after he labels Le Pen ruling ‘witch hunt’

A man once accused of plotting to assassinate <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> says the allegation has shattered his personal life, driven him into hiding and even made him &ldquo;less datable.&rdquo; Vem Miller, who was arrested ahead of a Trump rally in California&rsquo;s Coachella Valley last October, is now suing Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco for $100 million in a defamation lawsuit.
Miller strongly denies the sheriff&rsquo;s suggestion that he was &ldquo;probably&rdquo; a would-be assassin and says the fallout has left him with death threats, strained family ties, and a reputation he can't escape.

<h2>&ldquo;This &lsquo;assassin guy&rsquo; label destroyed everything&rdquo;</h2>
In a phone interview with Newsweek, Miller opened up about the impact the sheriff&rsquo;s claim has had. &ldquo;I went through a very messy divorce. There was a lot of tension and little contact with my children already. But following the Coachella Valley incident, the little contact I had has now gone away because I was dubbed this 'assassin guy,&rsquo;&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;I've had a difficult time in all aspects of my life,&rdquo; he added. &ldquo;If you're going to rent something or you're going to date someone, do you choose the person who has 40 pages of controversy online, or do you choose somebody who doesn't have that?"

<h2>Why was he arrested?</h2>
Miller was arrested after deputies discovered a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine in his vehicle near the Trump rally. He was also said to be carrying fake press passes and identification documents, claims he completely denies.
Despite the serious nature of the initial reports, Miller was never charged with attempting to kill Trump. He has pleaded not guilty to two charges of possessing loaded firearms and insists one charge will be dropped because the shotgun wasn&rsquo;t loaded.
A joint statement from the US Attorney&rsquo;s Office, Secret Service, and FBI confirmed that Trump &ldquo;was not in any danger&rdquo; during the rally and that &ldquo;the incident did not impact protective operations.&rdquo;

<h2>Who is 'assassin guy' Vem Miller?</h2>
Miller says he attended the October 12 rally as part of his work as an investigative journalist. He runs the America Happens Network, which he founded in 2007, producing podcasts and shows critical of mainstream media.
He claims he was upfront with law enforcement, telling officers at the checkpoint that he had firearms in the car. &ldquo;I categorically dispute every single thing Bianco has said about me,&rdquo; Miller told Newsweek, insisting he never carried fake IDs nor intended harm. &ldquo;He was trying to character-assassinate me to gain national prominence for his governor run.&rdquo;
Bianco, a Republican, is running for California governor in the 2026 election.
<h2>&ldquo;Holding people like this accountable&rdquo;</h2>
Miller says the lawsuit is about more than just clearing his name, it&rsquo;s about confronting what he sees as a worrying trend. &ldquo;This lawsuit really is about holding individuals like this accountable, because unfortunately, the Chad Bianco types in the United States are becoming the rule and not the exception,&rdquo; he said.

Miller strongly denies the sheriff’s suggestion that he was “probably” a would-be assassin and says the fallout has left him with death threats, strained family ties, and a reputation he can't escape. Also read: 'Makes no economic sense': Trump’s tariff math is 'based on an error' and it could cost the US economy dearly - Here's how “This ‘assassin guy’ label destroyed everything” In a phone interview with Newsweek, Miller opened up about the impact the sheriff’s claim has had. “I went through a very messy divorce. There was a lot of tension and little contact with my children already. But following the Coachella Valley incident, the little contact I had has now gone away because I was dubbed this 'assassin guy,’” he said. “I've had a difficult time in all aspects of my life,” he added. “If you're going to rent something or you're going to date someone, do you choose the person who has 40 pages of controversy online, or do you choose somebody who doesn't have that?" Also read: Falling in line after Trump’s tariffs? Over 50 countries rush to negotiate with US - Who are they? Why was he arrested? Miller was arrested after deputies discovered a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine in his vehicle near the Trump rally. He was also said to be carrying fake press passes and identification documents, claims he completely denies. Despite the serious nature of the initial reports, Miller was never charged with attempting to kill Trump. He has pleaded not guilty to two charges of possessing loaded firearms and insists one charge will be dropped because the shotgun wasn’t loaded. A joint statement from the US Attorney’s Office, Secret Service, and FBI confirmed that Trump “was not in any danger” during the rally and that “the incident did not impact protective operations.” Also read: Crypto, $TRUMP and Truth Social: How 'greatest salesman' Trump doubled his net worth in last one year Who is 'assassin guy' Vem Miller? Miller says he attended the October 12 rally as part of his work as an investigative journalist. He runs the America Happens Network, which he founded in 2007, producing podcasts and shows critical of mainstream media. He claims he was upfront with law enforcement, telling officers at the checkpoint that he had firearms in the car. “I categorically dispute every single thing Bianco has said about me,” Miller told Newsweek, insisting he never carried fake IDs nor intended harm. “He was trying to character-assassinate me to gain national prominence for his governor run.” Bianco, a Republican, is running for California governor in the 2026 election. “Holding people like this accountable” Miller says the lawsuit is about more than just clearing his name, it’s about confronting what he sees as a worrying trend. “This lawsuit really is about holding individuals like this accountable, because unfortunately, the Chad Bianco types in the United States are becoming the rule and not the exception,” he said. More than 50 countries have approached the White House to start trade negotiations, according to a top adviser to US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a>. The announcement comes as the global economy faces mounting pressure following Trump&rsquo;s sweeping new tariffs.
Speaking on ABC News' This Week, Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council, pushed back against claims that the tariffs were part of a larger plan to trigger market chaos and influence the US Federal Reserve.
"I got a report from the USTR last night (the office of the US trade representative) that more than 50 countries have reached out to the president to begin a negotiation. But they are doing that because they understand that they bear a lot of the tariff," Hassett said.&nbsp;

Elon Musk, the tech mogul and current US government official running <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/shame-on-you-trump-americans-gather-for-hands-off-protest-against-us-president-musk-say-dont-be-doge-bag-8930270" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">DOGE</a> (Department of Government Efficiency), has voiced his aspiration for a tariff-free trade zone between the United States and Europe.&nbsp;
Speaking via video link at a congress organised by Italy's right-wing League Party, Musk said he hoped that both regions would "move ideally, in my view, to a zero tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America."
<h2>Diverging from Trump's protectionist policies</h2>
Musk's comments come on the heels of President Donald Trump's announcement of a 20 per cent tariff on all imports from the European Union and a 10 per cent standard tariff on almost all other countries, a move that has caused economic disruptions globally.

Despite his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and his close advisory relationship with Trump, Musk's call for eliminating tariffs marks a notable deviation from the administration's current protectionist stance.
<h2>Tesla's challenges</h2>
Tesla has had a rough start to the year. The company recently reported a sharp drop in vehicle deliveries for the first quarter, with sales falling significantly in multiple European markets. The company&rsquo;s share price has nearly halved since December.
Musk himself has taken a major financial hit, losing billions following Trump&rsquo;s tariff decisions. The latest trade policies could worsen Tesla's already strained supply chain and further affect its global performance.

<h2>Musk wants freer movement and fewer rules</h2>
During the interview, Musk also called for greater freedom of movement between Europe and North America and criticised the level of regulation in Europe.
&ldquo;There are too many rules and regulations that make it very difficult to create a company and do too much to protect large companies at the expense of small to medium-sized companies,&rdquo; Musk said. WATCH | Musk seen ‘jamming’ on live stream as thousands protest against him and Trump

Despite a steep drop in the US stock market last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says that President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/cant-stomach-trumps-absurd-tariff-math-trumps-treasury-secy-looking-for-exit-door-after-tariffs-ruin-his-credibility-8930074" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump&rsquo;s</a> new tariff plans aren&rsquo;t the real reason behind the fall.
Instead, Bessent pointed the finger at DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence platform launched earlier this year, claiming that its release had a bigger impact on investor confidence than any political decision.
&ldquo;For everyone who thinks these market declines are all based on the President's economic policies, I can tell you that this market decline started with the Chinese AI announcement of DeepSeek,&rdquo; Bessent said during an interview with Tucker Carlson posted on Friday.

<h2>'I'd say it's more a Mag 7 problem, not a MAGA'</h2>
DeepSeek, which rivals platforms like ChatGPT, introduced its latest version in January. According to Bessent, it triggered the downturn in the share prices of leading US tech firms, often referred to as the &ldquo;Magnificent 7.&rdquo;
&ldquo;I'd say it's more a Mag 7 problem, not a MAGA problem,&rdquo; Bessent told Carlson.
Bessent, a former hedge fund manager before becoming Treasury Secretary under Trump, explained, &ldquo;If I were to analyse in my old hat, and this is the only time I'm going to talk about it ... what's happening with the market, I'd say it's more a Mag 7 problem, not a MAGA problem.&rdquo;

The &ldquo;Mag 7&rdquo; includes seven top-performing technology companies whose success has heavily influenced the stock market&rsquo;s recent highs. &ldquo;MAGA,&rdquo; meanwhile, refers to Trump&rsquo;s &ldquo;Make America Great Again&rdquo; slogan.
US markets have fallen by roughly 10% over two days since Trump introduced a global 10% import tax, with even steeper tariffs for certain countries. But signs of weakness were already visible earlier in the year when DeepSeek&rsquo;s free AI assistant launched, boasting lower data use and cheaper running costs. Despite a steep drop in the US stock market last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says that President Donald Trump’s new tariff plans aren’t the real reason behind the fall. Instead, Bessent pointed the finger at DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence platform launched earlier this year, claiming that its release had a bigger impact on investor confidence than any political decision. “For everyone who thinks these market declines are all based on the President's economic policies, I can tell you that this market decline started with the Chinese AI announcement of DeepSeek,” Bessent said during an interview with Tucker Carlson posted on Friday. New tariffs introduced by US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> could pose a serious threat to the country&rsquo;s defence industry, potentially harming international military projects and pushing up the cost of producing weapons, Politico reported.
Trump announced a wide-reaching list of &ldquo;reciprocal tariffs&rdquo; on 2 April, setting a standard 10% duty on all countries with higher rates imposed on key partners like the European Union.
<h2>How will new tariffs affect US weapon production?</h2>
The new tariffs could disrupt long-standing international defence cooperation, with experts warning that joint projects like the F-35 fighter jet, missile defence systems, and nuclear submarines could be affected.

The duties, which include a 20% levy on EU goods and 10% on imports from the UK and Australia, risk destabilising defence partnerships that have taken years to build.
The F-35 jet programme, which includes 20 nations and was designed to give partners a role in manufacturing, could face major delays. Other critical collaborations with countries such as Norway and Israel are also in question.
These projects are seen as vital for defence in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, particularly as tensions rise with Russia and China.&ldquo;There&rsquo;s going to be shortages of supplies, tit-for-tats, and our allies and other partners are going to retaliate,&rdquo; warned Bill Greenwalt, a former Pentagon acquisition official told Politico.

&ldquo;We count on the US for the best equipment,&rdquo; a European official told Politico.

&ldquo;Our defence budget, if we want to maintain the same type of force, will get more expensive,&rdquo; he added.

'Pentagon will pay': Did Trump shoot US weapon production in foot with reciprocal tariffs? F-35, NATO partnerships at risk

President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump </a>on Friday (April 04) said that he is committed to his economic policies despite global market disruption following a new wave of sweeping US tariffs, insisting the move would ultimately benefit American investors.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, &ldquo;To many investors coming into the United States and investing massive amounts of money, my policies will never change. This is a great time to get rich, richer than ever before.&rdquo;
He added, &ldquo;GREAT JOB NUMBERS, FAR BETTER THAN EXPECTED. IT&rsquo;S ALREADY WORKING. HANG TOUGH, WE CAN&rsquo;T LOSE!!!&rdquo;

<h2>Market chaos follows tariff war</h2>
The latest market slide came after China hit back with a 34% tariff on US imports, a direct response to Trump&rsquo;s earlier decision to impose the same rate on all Chinese goods. That brings the total US tariff on Chinese products to at least 54%, fuelling fears of a deepening global trade war.
Financial analysts and global investors have voiced serious concerns about the move. Following the announcements, stock futures fell by as much as 4.1% on Friday, after the US markets endured their worst one-day loss since 2020 on Thursday, according to Bloomberg.
In Europe, shares dropped by roughly 1% at the opening, with bank stocks hit hardest as fears grow over a slowdown in economic activity, The New York Times reported. Asian markets also fell, though US stocks have taken the most severe beating.

<h2>Will there be a recession in the US?</h2>
Despite the market slide, the Trump administration is pushing back against fears of long-term economic damage. The president compared the US economy to a patient recovering from a medical procedure.
Trump said the economy is like a &ldquo;patient that was very sick&rdquo; and that it had to undergo an operation, but was now on the mend.
However, financial experts are not so optimistic. JPMorgan analysts have raised the likelihood of a global recession to 60%, up from 40% the day the tariffs were unveiled, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
While Trump insists his approach will help revive American industry and create opportunities for local investors, concerns over a broader economic fallout continue to grow.

The Trump administration has removed Gen. Timothy Haugh, head of both the National Security Agency (NSA) and US Cyber Command, without providing an official explanation. Haugh, who took on the dual roles just over a year ago, was dismissed alongside his NSA deputy, Wendy Noble, according to two officials who spoke with The Washington Post.
The decision follows a Wednesday meeting between President Donald Trump and far-right activist Laura Loomer, who reportedly pushed for the removal of Haugh and several others she viewed as disloyal to the president.
