Future American investments in Poland could be jeopardised if the country does not renew the licence of 24-hour news channel TVN24, US State Department Counselor Derek Chollet said on Thursday, referring to potential new Polish laws against its ownership by American media company Discovery Inc.

The station is in the process of renewing its licence, but the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party is planning changes to the law that could force Discovery to sell a majority stake.

The National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) on Thursday voted on the TVN24 licence, which expires on September 26, but the results were inconclusive.

"This is a very significant American investment here in Poland. And there will be knock-on effects perhaps, if the license is not renewed, to future US investments...," Chollet told TVN24 in an interview.

He added he had raised the issue during meetings with Polish officials.

TVN, estimated to be worth over $1 billion, is the biggest American investment in Poland.

In July, PiS lawmakers submitted to parliament amendments to the Broadcasting Act that would restrict companies from outside the European Economic Area from controlling Polish radio and television stations.

The proposed changes have fuelled tension between Poland and the United States and prompted fresh criticism from Polish opposition groups that PiS is seeking to curb media freedom.

PiS argues that foreign companies have too much influence in the media sector, distorting public debate.

"Media freedom is absolutely critical," Chollet said.

Big boss Mike Wazowski (voice by Bily Crystal) makes a small mistake and is now huffing and puffing at the office floor. Irate with all the paperwork that’s pushed down his throat, in a moment of weakness, Mike challenges his arch nemesis Gary (voice by Gabriel Iglesias) to a bowling face-off at the upcoming Bowl-off-a-thon at Monsters Inc. Only hindrance? He neither knows how to throw a ball nor does he know anyone who does.

Meanwhile, Tyler Tuskman (voice by Ben Feldman) is desperate to move away from the MIFT team and ‘get in good’ with his boss, Mike, with the hope that the latter would finally promote him to the role of a jokester. Mike’s in a limbo, Tyler finds the perfect pitch to impress. What happens next—leading up to the Bowl-off-a-thon tournament—constitutes the rest of this 22-minute long episode, titled ‘The Big Wazowskis’

Kaitlyn Ritter’s approach towards this episode is of heightening the drama: she focuses more on the preparation revolving around the face-off than the main event itself. Through blink-and-you-miss-it jokes and the power of animation, Ritter makes you one and all roll on the floor… literally!

‘The Big Wazowskis’ also serves as a behavioral insight into office politics, the innate quality of betrayal humans posses—brought to light through the eyes of cutesy creatures like ‘No Gutter Cutter’ and ‘No Splitz Fritz’—all the while staying true to its central theme: of love and laughter.

Unlike episode three, the Monsters Inc. team deviates from high-octane emotions.
The world of Cruella is expanding.

Emma Stone starrer Disney live-action movie just released and the studio is already working on a sequel. The live-action prequel to the animated feature '101 Dalmatians' debuted in theatres and on Disney+ just last week and is raking good numbers with impressive ratings.

As per the reports, it is still unclear whether Stone is reprising her villainous role or not, but director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara both are expected to return.

"We are very pleased with Cruella's box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement provided to THR. "The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film."

'Cruella' opened on May 28 and to date, the film earned $32.4 million domestically and $48.5 million worldwide and is still earning; although as per the Variety, Disney characterizes the film’s Disney Plus performance as “strong,” as with all streamers.

The much-talked movie tells the story of Cruella De Vil, the antagonist of the 1961 animated classic '101 Dalmatians'. The movie is set in 1970s London during the punk rock revolution and follows young grifter Estella (Stone), an ambitious, unfettered, and arguably unhinged designer determined to make a name for herself in the ruthless fashion business.

The events and revelation during the course of the film will see Estella embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella.

Disney is reportedly working on 'Cruella' sequel!

“The thing is, I was born brilliant,” Cruella de Vil says in the new live-action Disney prequel to 'One Hundred and One Dalmatians.' “Born bad. And a little bit mad.”

Not quite.

In her first incarnation, Cruella de Vil was a married woman with a cat.

Created by British playwright and children’s novelist Dodie Smith, Cruella was born in a 1956 children’s novel, 'The 101 Dalmatians.' Yes, the skunk hair and selfish nature were there from the start, but the original Cruella was more of a spoiled socialite than a Maleficent — at least outwardly — and conveyed a preternatural calm. She doused her food in pepper, was expelled from school for drinking ink, boasted of having the loudest car horn in London and was married to a wealthy furrier — though not for love, apparently.

She wanted unfettered access to as many fabulous fur coats as possible.

Through the years, the Cruella character has been featured in a number of adaptations, including two Disney animated films, an animated TV series, two live-action '101 Dalmatians' takes (in which she is portrayed by Glenn Close), a BBC audio drama, a stage musical, a young-adult book series and now the live-action origin story, 'Cruella,' with Emma Stone as the title character.

While the Dalmatians have always been a constant, Cruella has gotten more fabulous, funny and — dare we say it? — likable.

Though the headstrong heiress of Smith’s novel lacked the spiky charisma of Close’s domineering fashion designer or the sympathetic shadow of Stone’s tragically orphaned girl who breaks bad, Walt Disney found the character intriguing enough to enough to acquire the rights from Smith for a 1961 animated film — which produced an instantly recognizable theme song.

Marc Davis, who oversaw the animation of Cruella in 'One Hundred and One Dalmatians,' deserves credit for creating the on-screen standard, from Cruella’s disheveled hair and crazed temperament to her unhinged driving and long green cigarette holder, which was modeled on one of his own. He also gave her red lipstick and an exaggerated fur coat with a red lining (she’s a devil, remember?), while Bill Peet, who wrote the screenplay, axed her cat and husband from the story.

Richard Keen, a professor of psychology at Converse College in South Carolina who has studied the appeal of villains, said we’re drawn to Cruella in part because she is the character we are supposed to hate.

“If society generally tells us we should not root for a bad guy, then in effect, it is like a choice is being restricted,” he said, “increasing the likelihood that you will start to like that character more.”

He credits Close’s charismatic take with helping elevate Cruella’s reputation from a spiteful socialite to a pop-culture icon of haute, vindictive glamour. It also doesn’t hurt, he said, that she’s beautiful, unlike Disney villains like Ursula in 'The Little Mermaid' or the old hag in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” who tend to be more repulsive than ravishing.

“When there are exceptions, such as when Glenn Close played Cruella, we may have a bias to root for them due to our expectations, developed from previous experiences, that the beautiful characters should win,” he said.

Unlike the novel’s wealthy, married heiress, or the animated film’s sinister, skulking puppy-napper, Close’s Cruella is a glamorous fashion magnate. She’s snobbish, independent and incredibly successful. And, for the first time, the true star of the film.

Until, of course, Stone came along and one-upped her. Stone’s young, careerist fashion designer, who nabs title billing in the new film, set in 1970s London, is the first incarnation of Cruella to get a PG-13 rating.

Stone’s Cruella is the youngest — and most sympathetic — take on the character yet. Sure, she lies, steals and hot-wires a luxury car, but she has a clear motive: revenge. And, as a lower-middle-class girl who becomes a rising fashion star by cleaning bathrooms and scrubbing floors, weirdly relatable.

It’s been a journey from a haughty, ink-drinking heiress to a character you can almost — almost — cheer for.

Disney is in a clear mind to release Marvel's much-awaited film 'Black Widow' in theaters. Disney CEO Bob Chapek has insisted that Scarlett Johansson-front superhero movie is still on course to make its debut in theatres worldwide.

According to Deadline, during an investor call on Thursday, Chapek said the company has no plans to send the Marvel Studios project to its streamer Disney Plus.

"We are still intending for it to be a theatrical release. We are going to be watching very carefully to see whether that strategy needs to be revisited," he said.

"Black Widow", featuring Johansson in her last appearance as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow, was originally scheduled for release in May 2020 but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As of now, the film is slated to release on May 7.

During the pandemic, Disney made some bold moves to compensate for the closure of movie theatres. It took the decision of sending its big-budget live-action movie 'Mulan' to Disney Plus. The studio also sent the animated feature "Soul" to the streamer, while another movie "Raya and the Last Dragon" will be debuting simultaneously in theatres and on Disney Plus.

"Some films we will take theatrically. Some films we will take to Disney Premiere Access. And in some cases, we will take it directly to service (Disney Plus). It's really about flexibility. We're going to steer our decision making over time given (the needs) of our subscriber base," Chapek said.

Sabrina Carpenter and Joshua Bassett have something exciting cooking. The 21-year-old singer gave a little insight on her and 'The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' star's upcoming collaboration. Titled 'We Both Know,' Carpenter expressed that the song is "very dear" to her heart.

In an interview, Sabrina said, "I can't say too much and it's on his project so I'm like, I don't want to say too much that I can't say. But it's a collaboration very dear to my heart that I'm very excited about."

Carpenter added that she and Bassett, her rumored boyfriend, worked on it "a while ago. I guess you'll have to see."

Bassett, Carpenter, and Rodrigo have been the subject of a social media frenzy since Rodrigo, 17, released her debut single "drivers license," a breakup ballad seemingly inspired by a messy split from Bassett, her 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' costar.

Soon after, Carpenter dropped 'Skin,' an emotional pop 'answer-song' that is seemingly a direct response to Rodrigo's claims. "Maybe you didn't mean it/ Maybe blonde was the only rhyme," she sings on the track.

In one of her earlier interviews, Carpenter opened up about her writing process, saying her songs are a reflection of what is happening in her life.

"I definitely felt that within the songs that I was writing, it wasn't so much struggling with my identity, as struggling with coming to terms with who I am," she said at the time. "I feel like this past year is definitely — ups and downs-wise — like a roller coaster. It's taught me a lot, that's for sure. But it also stretched me to different places that I didn't think that I could go before."

Disney Pixar's critically lauded animated film 'Soul' became the first feature film to top Nielsen's weekly streaming rankings, debuting at No. 1 for the last week of December. Read the review of Soul here.

The movie, which premiered on Disney+, topped two other high-profile premieres during Christmas week: Drama series 'Bridgerton' and George Clooney's feature film 'The Midnight Sky', both on Netflix. Wonder Woman 1984 also premiered on Christmas on HBO Max, but Nielsen's streaming measurement doesn't currently include that platform, and WarnerMedia doesn't release viewership data for HBO Max.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, capturing about 1.67 billion minutes of viewing time 'Soul' has achieved a landmark as the equivalent of almost 16.7 million full runs of the 100-minute film. Bridgerton (1.2 billion minutes) and The Midnight Sky (1.11 billion) claimed the third and fourth spots on the chart behind The Office, whose last full week on Netflix before moving to Peacock delivered 1.44 billion minutes of viewing time.

A second Disney+ property, 'The Mandalorian', remained in the top 10 a week after its season finale, drawing slightly more than a billion minutes of viewing time. Two other originals, Netflix's The Crown and The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two, also made the top 10.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming platforms contend Nielsen`s methodology doesn`t capture the full scope of viewing on devices other than TV sets. Nielsen also only measures U.S. audiences, not those in other countries.

Nielsen's top 10 streaming programs for Dec. 21-27 are below, with the prior week's rank in parentheses. Original streaming series and films are marked with an asterisk.

Was 'afraid' to talk about race before working on Pixar's 'Soul', admits co-director Pete Docter A second Disney+ property, 'The Mandalorian', remained in the top 10 a week after its season finale, drawing slightly more than a billion minutes of viewing time. 1 (nr). Soul* (Disney+), 1.67 billion minutes viewed 2 (2). The Office (Netflix), 1.44 billion 3 (nr).
Shot on a phone amid a global lockdown, sci-fi expert Arati Kadav, delivered a fine film in her newest outing. Best known for last year’s 'Cargo' that wowed everyone upon dropping on Netflix in September last year, the filmmaker seems to have upped her game this time around shooting an entire film locked at home.

The film that rides on its high concept idea stars Richa Chadha in the lead part. Floored by Kadav's script, this was Chadha’s first project that she shot during the lockdown.

There are only a few things in life that matter. The will to appreciate life is the purpose one needs to strive for, and people often forget, while running behind their dreams and passion. Pixar’s latest animated film ‘Soul’ talks exactly about that. The passion to live over the passion to achieve something grand.

Told brilliantly through the life of a music teacher who is trying hard to make it into the world of jazz music, while holding on to a job as a temporary middle-school music teacher. His life turns upside-down (literally), when he dies on the very day he gets the gig of his dreams and reaches the path to ‘the great beyond’. Flustered by the sudden happening, he tries his best to make it back to his body and reach the ‘purpose’ of his life, he’s waited for his entire life. On his quest to reach the Earth, he meets a soul called 22, an Earth-virgin soul who has no plans to enter the mortal world despite being mentored and ridiculed by the souls of Mother Teresa, Abraham Lincoln, and more. However, circumstances have them both sent to Earth and their adventure leads them to greater revelations.

Voiced by Jamiee Fox and Tina Fey, the key characters of the story Joe Gardener and Soul 22, are as adorable as any other Disney-Pixar characters. The beauty of these characters is their relatability in the year 2020, the year infamously crowned as hopeless. The vigour of Joe to reach his dreams is marred by an unforeseen circumstance, forcing him to step back. Something everybody in 2020 faced, when their long-due plans were pushed back by the ongoing pandemic, however the push back also made everyone take the necessary break and reflect, just like Joe. With soul 22, the nihilist in us realized the importance of the bare minimum and how essential it is to recognise the beauty of mundane life.

The entire life-affirming journey is told in an interesting, humorous manner that leaves you teary-eyed by the end of the film - a typical Disney-Pixar trait. There’s a great chance that it will provoke you to think beyond the reaches of your goals and reflect on life with an easy glare. Of course, life is hard and dreams are definitely worth chasing, but they are not the purpose. The purpose is to live life to every moment and cherish being in every moment. Because, in the end, it’s all you ever have - a moment. While big achievements give you character, tiny little moments make you human and that’s all the spark you need to be happy.

The music in the film deserves a special mention, as it captures the essence of jazz and celebrates creativity. It picks up the traditional points and takes them to another dimension creating something truly enjoyable.

It’s beautiful how ‘Soul’ deals with the complexity and heaviness of life-theory through a child-gaze and brings out a rosy picture while acknowledging the struggles. Writers Pete Docter Mike Jones and Kemp Powers deserve all the credit here. The film is a captivating journey of joy that leaves you hopeful and at ease, something that one should feel after a stressful year like this.

Next year, as coronavirus vaccines roll out around the world, consumers are expected to return to restaurants, sports arenas and cinemas.
But with films like 'Matrix 4', 'In the Heights' and 'Dune' hitting TVs at the same time as theatres, and Marvel series 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' and 'Loki' streaming on Disney+, will they even want to?

The pandemic accelerated a push to subscription streaming video services like Netflix and Disney+ that was already underway, leading to a surplus of top-shelf content being available to consumers in 2021. But behind the scenes of this new golden age of television is a battle over the future of Hollywood.

2020 was the year major media companies placed their bets, with AT&T Inc, Comcast Corp and Walt Disney Co announcing new strategies around how and where they will distribute content. While their approaches vary, they are united by a singular focus on streaming video to appeal directly to viewers.

Less clear is who will emerge victorious once the pandemic is over. Will the experience of watching a film in a theatre - with a community of fans, a giant screen and enveloping sound - trump the convenience and lower cost of watching it at home?
The answer will help decide the future of Hollywood in 2022 and beyond.

AT&T’s Warner Bros studio took the boldest step of its peers when it announced plans to debut all of its 2021 films in theatres and on the HBO Max streaming service on the same day, including potential blockbusters like 'Matrix 4', 'The Suicide Squad', 'Dune' and 'In the Heights'. It is releasing 'Wonder Woman 1984' in theatres and on HBO Max on Dec. 25.

Warner Bros said the strategy, which AT&T Chief Executive John Stankey described as a "win-win-win" for consumers and partners, would stay in effect for one year. “I don`t know why they had to decide about the whole year,” said “Wonder Woman 1984” director Patty Jenkins in an interview with Reuters. “I wish we could have waited and seen what was happening with theatres."

Comcast’s Universal Pictures took a less drastic approach, chipping away at the theatrical window through deals with three major theatre operators - AMC Entertainment Holdings and Cinemark Holdings Inc, and Canada`s Cineplex.

The parties agreed to shorten the window between a film’s theatrical and at-home release. After as few as 17 days in theatres owned by one of those operators, Universal could make films such as “Sing 2” or "Minions: The Rise of Gru" available on digital platforms for $19.99.
Rather than announce sweeping changes to its movie release strategy, Disney opted to super-charge its streaming services. The company plans to release 10 new TV series each in the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, including two spinoffs of “The Mandalorian,” on the Disney+ streaming service over the next few years.

It will make another 15 live-action Disney Animation and Pixar shows and 15 Disney Animation and Pixar feature films available on the service.
Customers should expect about 100 or more titles on Disney+ every year, executives said on Dec. 10. To help fund the $16 billion Disney is planning to spend on new content in fiscal year 2024, in March 2021 Disney will raise the price of Disney+ by $1 in the U.S. to $7.99 per month and by 2 euros in continental Europe to 8.99 euros ($10.92).

In early 2021, ViacomCBS is rebranding its CBS All Access streaming service as "Paramount+" - which will include episodes and movies from ViacomCBS-owned brands such as Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures, including series such as “The Twilight Zone” and “The Good Fight.”
These changes may not have happened as quickly without the pandemic, although some Hollywood insiders consider them inevitable.

“Without a doubt, we are into the big curve of change that I think has been due ever since people first had (premium video on demand),” actor Tom Hanks said in December. “(Arguably) since the VHS cassette tape was first introduced in a cheap way, this has been just across the horizon."

The Empires Strike Back: Disney, Comcast, AT&T set streaming battle

It's been 10 years since Miley Cyrus broke the image of being a Disney darling with leaked footage of smoking up with friends.

Recently, the singer who started out as 'Hannah Montana' shared on her Instagram a part of the now-infamous video of herself as 18-year-old smoking from a bong and wrote, "Happy 10 year anniversary to the groundbreaking video of a teenager smoking a bong & saying dumb s--t to their friends. (Not sure the director of this fine film should be considered a 'friend' but...)"
