Walt Disney has always been a champion of using newer technologies and introducing them in the entertainment world so it is no surprise as they announce plans of joining the metaverse bandwagon with Mark Zuckerberg with his Meta (earlier known as Facebook) and Microsoft.

Disney to enter the world of metaverse, to bring revolutionary change in entertainment business

Marvel's superhero film 'Shang-Chi: The Legend of Ten Rings' was released in India recently but Disney has altered the film's lines to suit the Indian palate it seems.&nbsp;

The Hindi dubbed version of Marvel has translated the word 'beef' to 'veg biryani' in a particular scene.&nbsp;

A scene in the film has Shangi Chi (Simu Liu) going to China with his friend Katy (Awwkwafina) to look for his estranged sisters. In the flight, while narrating his backstory to Katy, Shang Chi is interrupted by a flight attendant.&nbsp;
In the original audio, the attendant asks them whether they will have beef or vegetarian, as there is no chicken and those are the only two options. Katy responds, “Vegetarian would be great.” Before Shang-Chi can continue his story, the attendant interrupts them again to say there is no vegetarian either, so beef remains the only option.

In the Hindi version, the attendant instead gives them options between vegetarian or non-vegetarian. The attendant adds later that there is no non-vegetarian food available. When the two opt for vegetarian, she tells them that there is no option in vegetarian either, so their only option is is veg biryani.

Interestingly, the food options change according to the language. An eagle-eyed fan on Twitter noticed that the beef becomes bread omelette in Malayalam and upma in Tamil. Someone on the same Twitter thread wondered if, in Marathi dubbed version, the attendant was offering vada pav.&nbsp;

Mickey Mouse is poised to venture into the metaverse.

Walt Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the entertainment conglomerate is preparing to make the technological leap into a virtual reality world first imagined by science fiction writers.

It is a popular destination these days, ever since Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the future of his company would be devoted to creating a robust, three-dimensional environment where users’ digital avatars would work, hang out and pursue their hobbies.

Other big companies, including game-makers Roblox Corp and Epic Games, and software giant Microsoft Corp, are working on their own metaverses. Disney’s plan was notably devoid of specifics, beyond dropping a buzzword that has animated Silicon Valley.

Chapek told investors Wednesday that entering this new digital frontier is consistent with Disney’s long history of technological innovation, dating back nearly a century to Steamboat Willie, the first cartoon to feature synchronized sound.

“Our efforts to date are merely a prologue to a time when we`ll be able to connect the physical and digital worlds even more closely, allowing for storytelling, without boundaries in our own Disney Metaverse,” Chapek said during Disney’s fourth-quarter earnings call.

In an interview with CNBC, Chapek said he envisions it as an extension of streaming video service Disney+ -- through the “three-dimensional canvass” he envisions for new types of storytelling.

Disney’s former executive vice president of digital, Tilak Mandadi, wrote on LinkedIn in 2020 about creating a theme park metaverse, where “physical and digital world converge” through wearable devices, smartphones and digital access points.

Not all of Disney’s digital forays have had happy endings. Its online children’s social network, Club Penguin, shuttered in 2017, after 11 years. Its entry into social gaming, via its $563.2 million purchase of Playdom in 2010, resulted in a write-down. Its efforts to capitalize on the galloping popularity of short-form YouTube videos through a $500 million acquisition of Maker Studios in 2014, resulted in the operation being absorbed into other parts of the company.

Disney India announces 2021-2022 movie slate, kickstarting with 'Eternals'

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson and Walt Disney Co have resolved their legal dispute over the release of the film 'Black Widow'. The production company and actress announced in a joint statement, that the matter was resolved, although terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Earlier this year in July, Johansson&nbsp;sued Disney, accusing the entertainment giant of breaching her contract when the company offered the movie on its subscription streaming service Disney+ at the same time the film was released in theatres.

In her complaint, Johansson alleged that the dual-release strategy for 'Black Widow'&nbsp;had reduced her compensation, which she said was to be based in part on box office receipts from an exclusive run in cinemas.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-disney-ceo-weighs-in-on-scarlett-johansson-controversy-our-talent-is-our-most-important-asset-414876" hreflang="en">Disney CEO weighs in on Scarlett Johansson controversy: Our talent is our most important asset</a>

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson and Walt Disney Co have resolved their legal dispute over the release of the film 'Black Widow'. The production company and actress announced in a joint statement, that the matter was resolved, although terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Earlier this year in July, Johansson sued Disney, accusing the entertainment giant of breaching her contract when the company offered the movie on its subscription streaming service Disney+ at the same time the film was released in theatres. In her complaint, Johansson alleged that the dual-release strategy for 'Black Widow' had reduced her compensation, which she said was to be based in part on box office receipts from an exclusive run in cinemas. Tommy Kirk, Disney's 'Old Yeller' and 'The Shaggy Dog' actor, dies at 79

Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt starrer 'Jungle Cruise' sets out to be an adventure-fantasy film that has the usual tropes of the genre. Complete with folklore, mythical figures, cursed invaders and daredevil hero and heroine- 'Jungle Cruise' sets out to be an exhilarating ride. It doesn't always succeed but manages to sail through mainly due to its lead pair.&nbsp;

Based on Disney's theme park ride 'Jungle Cruise', the story is set in 1916 and revolves around Dr Lily Houghton(Emily Blunt) who wants to travel to the Amazon Rainforest to extract a flower from the ancient Tree Of Life. The extracts of the petal are life-saving and can cure any illness, we are told. The challenge is that the tree, many feels is just a part of the folklore and the river doesn't offer anything other than danger. Lily reluctantly takes the help of Frank Wolff(Dwayne Johnson), captain of a rickety boat, who gives the cheapest guided cruise on the Amazon river. Lily and her brother McGregor along with Frank set out on a journey full of hurdles, enemies and adventure.&nbsp;

With six writers onboard, 'Jungle Cruise' takes a leisurely time to establish the plot. A lot of time is spent highlighting Lily's character- who for her time is far more adventurous than any other woman, who believes in the goodness of humanity and who throws caution to the wind when it comes to pursuing something that gives her an adrenaline rush.&nbsp;

While it takes director Jaume Collet Serra some time to reach the main plot of the film, the adventure film heavily borrows from several other hits of the same genre to make the film exciting. He succeeds to quite an extent. There are predictable chase sequences, action stunts and the usual CGI tropes to make the film engaging. But perhaps what scores most is the humour that runs through the film in the best possible way. Be it with the pun intended dialogues of Johnson or dry humour by Jack Whitehall who plays Blunt's younger brother or unassuming humour by Jessie Plemons- the screenplay is laced with humour which makes the film enjoyable. Whitehall plays a pansy, uppity British man and perhaps Disney's first openly gay character. The moment when he comes out to Johnson's character is well written and sensitively shot - making it one of the special scenes of the film.&nbsp;

'Jungle Cruise' though meanders a bit in the middle with relentless chases, and a slightly unnecessary romantic track. The screenplay never really peaks and is repetitive after a point. But overall it wins over for its simplistic approach to an adventure story, deftly told by the entire team. It is also enjoyable to watch Blunt and Johnson's war of words - as the actors play their characters with ease.&nbsp;

In as many words as possible Disney confronted publicly the controversy with their Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson who sued the studio for cutting her money by making the film available both in theatres and their streamer simultaneously.&nbsp;

At the Goldman Sachs’ 30th annual Communacopia Conference, Disney CEO Bob Chapek was asked about the compensation of Hollywood talent going forward in the wake of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-scarlett-johansson-sues-disney-over-black-widow-streaming-release-401624">Scarlett Johansson controversy.</a> He said, “Disney has had a long history of having very symbiotic and cooperative deals with the talent and we will continue to.”

“Certainly the world is changing, and the talent deals going forward will have to reflect the fact that the world is changing. We’re in a moment of time where films were envisioned under one understanding about what the world would be, because frankly it hadn’t changed much,” he said.

He added, “Remember, those films were made three or four years ago; those deals were cut three or four years ago. Then they get launched in the middle of a global pandemic where that pandemic itself is accelerating a second dynamic, which is this changing consumer behavior. So we’re sort of putting a square peg in a round hole right now where we’ve got a deal conceived under a certain set of conditions, that actually results in a movie that is being released in a completely different set of conditions.”

“So there’s a bit of rest going on right now. Ultimately, we’ll think about that as we do our future talent deals and plan for that and make sure that’s incorporated. But right now we have this sort of middle position, where we’re trying to do right by the talent, I think the talent is trying to do right by us, and we’re just figuring out our way to bridge the gap. Ultimately we believe our talent is our most important asset, and we’ll continue to believe that, and as we always have, we’ll compensate them fairly per the terms of the contract that they agreed to us with,” he continued.

Disney had <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-disney-lashes-at-scarlett-johansson-for-suing-it-on-taking-black-widow-film-to-disney-401634">bashed Scarlett Johansson</a> when she sued them for eating up her money and said it was insensitive of the actress to ask for the film to be available only in theatres amid the pandemic when most people are not comfortable walking out of their homes because of the COVID-19 situation.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-scarlett-johansson-has-no-plans-to-return-as-black-widow-397293">Scarlett Johansson has 'no plans' to return as 'Black Widow'</a>

Disney had then said, “There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”&nbsp;

Walt Disney Co said on Friday it will release 'Eternals',&nbsp;'West Side Story'&nbsp;and the rest of its 2021 films exclusively in theatres before sending them to streaming, a show of confidence that moviegoing will rebound.

The company had experimented during the pandemic with debuting some movies on the Disney+ streaming service at the same time they ran in theatres. Cinema operators have been closely watching how Disney, which has dominated movie box offices in recent years, would handle its upcoming slate as the Delta variant slowed audiences` return to multiplexes.

Disney to debut rest of 2021 films exclusively in theaters

'Loki' star Owen Wilson is once again headed to Disney as he is set to star in the studio's new film adaptation of the popular theme park ride 'The Haunted Mansion'.

The actor joins previously announced cast members Tiffany Haddish and LaKeith Stanfield in the production that is described as an ensemble in nature. According to The Hollywood Reporter, story details are being kept in the dark, but it is known that the film will follow a family that moves into the titular mansion.

Justin Simien, known for 'Dear White People' and 'Bad Hair', will direct the latest version from Katie Dippold's script. "The Haunted Mansion" is based on the spooky theme park ride which first opened at Disneyland in 1969.

Disney's working on Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt 'Jungle Cruise' sequel

Movie theater bosses have plenty of cause for cheer this week -- not least because 2,000 of them are spending it at a bustling Las Vegas casino adorned with posters proclaiming "The Big Screen Is Back."

After a year-and-a-half of big film releases placed on hold due to Covid, the CinemaCon trade summit has seen studios show off a glut of forthcoming blockbuster offerings, with James Bond, Batman, Spider-Man and The Matrix all headed for the big screen soon.

But beneath the talk of theatrical renaissance is a great deal of uncertainty -- highlighted by the absence from Caesars Palace of Disney, which unlike its rivals did not put on a presentation of its theatrical schedule for the next few months.

The Delta variant is keeping Disney executives at home -- the same strain of Covid that has reduced US consumer confidence in the safety of going to theaters from its early-summer high.

But Disney bosses may have drawn a frosty reception in the desert heat had they met with owners of international multiplexes and independent mom-and-pop theaters, who rely heavily on their wildly popular product.

Hollywood's biggest studio has launched multiple recent films on its own Disney+ streaming platform, including 'Black Widow,'&nbsp;'Jungle Cruise'&nbsp;and 'Cruella,'&nbsp;taking money out of box office registers and popcorn concession stands.

While its comedy 'Free Guy'&nbsp;and next big Marvel superhero film 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings'&nbsp;are exclusive to theaters, nobody knows what Disney is planning next.

"We need to know where they're going in the future," National Association of Theatre Owners chief John Fithian told AFP.

"We just don't know what's coming from them after those movies. We need some greater signals about what their release models are," he added.

Disney is not alone -- rival Warner Bros for instance was slammed by theaters and A-listers for releasing all its 2021 titles on HBO Max, although it has since committed to a shorter, 45-day exclusive big-screen window for next year's movies.

But the competition between entertainment giants to drive new subscribers to their streaming platforms at any cost is a broader issue, and movie theaters are currently caught in the crossfire.&nbsp;

"The streaming wars are hot and heavy, and some studios have their streaming platforms as a big priority, and some don't," said Fithian.&nbsp;

"We are concerned about the attitude of some on the studio side, that profitability doesn't matter -- all that matters is subscribers," he added.

- 'Concerned' -&nbsp;

The concern raised by Hollywood studios experimenting with streaming is nothing compared to the ever-growing reach of Big Tech.

Earlier in the week historic studio MGM confirmed the long-delayed James Bond movie 'No Time To Die'&nbsp;will finally see the light of day in October -- important due to the franchise's enormous popularity, and symbolic as 007's outing was the first major movie delayed in March 2020.

But any mention of the Hollywood Golden Age-era studio's ongoing takeover by tech giant Amazon was, like Disney, conspicuously absent.

"What does an Amazon acquisition of MGM mean? We don't know," said Fithian.&nbsp;

"I hope it means that the creative vision, and the ways that movies are released by the MGM team, continues and is encouraged and is fostered. But it might not."

While theater owners insist studios will make more money by putting all their films back on the big screen once the pandemic eases, the equation changes for the deep-pocketed likes of Amazon, who have other priorities.

"It's not a business model that means they want big returns on their movies -- they want to drive people to Amazon Prime," Fithian said.

"It does concern us when a gigantic tech company like that proposes to acquire a historic film studio with filmmakers that want their movies in our theaters," he added.&nbsp;

The Amazon-MGM deal was announced in May, and is currently the subject of a federal antitrust probe.&nbsp;

While the theater owners' group has not taken a formal position, Fithian noted that regulators have the power to block or attach specific conditions to any merger.

"We are concerned about conditions on that acquisition, and we'd like to see movies released by MGM for theatrical release," he said.

Disney, Delta and Big Tech dampen movie theater party at CinemaCon

Tired of long waits for the Haunted Mansion or the Millennium Falcon? Walt Disney Co's US&nbsp;theme parks will offer an option to pay for quicker access to some of the most popular rides, the company said on Wednesday.

The feature is part of the rollout this fall of Disney Genie, a digital tool designed to help park visitors maximize their time at Disney's US&nbsp;parks, now operating at limited capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic and requiring masks while visitors are indoors.

Disney Genie will be free through the Disneyland and My Disney Experience apps, the company said in a blog post. An upgrade called Disney Genie+ will provide access to "Lightning Lanes" for quicker entry at a specific time to more than 15 attractions at California`s Disneyland and 40+ rides at Walt Disney World in Florida.

Disney Genie+ will cost $15 per ticket per day at Walt Disney World in Florida and $20 at California's Disneyland.
The company will also let visitors pay individually for Lightning Lane privileges at up to two select rides per day. The price for that access has not been announced.

The new line options will replace the quicker FastPass lines at both parks and the MaxPass queues at Disneyland. MaxPass, launched in 2017, let Disneyland viewers pay to book FastPass access from their phones for $20 a day.

The free Disney Genie service also aims to cut wait times by steering guests to their most coveted experiences at the optimal moment. Disney Chief Executive Bob Chapek, who previously ran the theme parks division, told analysts last week: "Guests are going to spend less time waiting and more time having fun."

Visitors can tell Disney Genie if they are most interested in Star Wars, princesses, superheroes or Pixar, for example, and which rides, restaurants and shows they want to experience. The service will suggest the itineraries based on real-time information and provide updates as circumstances change, the company said.

Is Disney planning for a ‘Free Guy’ sequel? Ryan Reynolds reacts

At the age of nine, Avantika Vandanapu—who goes by her first name on social media—won the dance reality show, 'Dance India Dance Lil Masters North America'. But, deep within, she was reeling under the stress of racial profiling and a sense of insecurity that came with incessant bullying. "The racial discrimination I faced was when I was younger and that did kind of set the tone for my growth and the kind of insecurities I would have," Disney’s 'Spin' lead actress tells WION during&nbsp;a conference call from America.&nbsp;

In this&nbsp;exclusive conversation with us, on the day of her big musical release 'Spin', the dancer- &nbsp; &nbsp;turned-actor—all of 16—recounts the horrid details of racism she had to face in the hands of 'fellow kids', her dreams and hopes for the future and how an unorthodox move by Disney shaped her career, hopefully for the better.

Excerpts from the chat:

WION: You are Disney’s first Indo-American lead. How did you land a gig like that?

AVANTIKA: I actually auditioned for this role when I was 12 years old and it was my first Hollywood audition ever and I was still working in India at the time. But I still auditioned and got a call back, and that was my ticket to Los Angeles, ticket to Disney to see Hollywood for the first time. Unfortunately, after that, the project (referring to 'Spin') went on hold. Actually, not unfortunately though, it was going on hold for further development for authenticity and make it as well-rounded as possible. But, it came back (to life) at the beginning of last year and I re-auditioned for it again and here, the audition process is pretty standard and it lasts about four months for a feature film. You have to do an audition, a call back and a producer session and then you perform in front of the entire network and in this case, it was Disney. So, this is the same process that i went through and Disney actually told me in the (audition) room—which is a bit unorthodox, that rarely happens—that I was booked and that was so exciting! It was like a full-circle project for me that I auditioned for and also the first big project that I booked.&nbsp;

<img alt="Avantika in Disney's 'Spin' posters" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="5128d534-3a0f-4258-b004-065bd9afde9b" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/pjimage%20-%202021-08-15T123108.162.jpg" />

WION: As an Indian-American, what kind of racial discrimination have you faced so far, if at all?

AVANTIKA: As an Indian-American, the kind of racial discrimination I have faced has mostly ever come up when I was younger. When I was younger, I had comments like 'Go back to your country', calling me a Paki (a slang for Pakistani immigrants living in America). I think it was common a lot for kids my age and people of South Asian descent faced, and making fun of me putting oil in my hair and making fun of the fact that I eat curry. It was just really disappointing comments and things that were being said by, unfortunately, kids my age which I think is even more hurtful to see. You know, a child spout that kind of hateful things. But, as I have grown up and seen the rise of social media, bring awareness to how these words can impact people, I have been fortunate to experience less of this racial discrimination and it’s helped my confidence a lot more. So, predominantly the racial discrimination I faced was when I was younger and that did kind of set the tone for my growth and the kind of insecurities I would have. But, I am finding that my confidence is growing because of how social media has made other South Asians and I feel less alone in our struggles and they are bringing awareness and bringing to light how these comments are affecting us. People are being a little bit more considerate and a little bit more sensitive, which I think is good.&nbsp;

WION: Through 'Spin', what are the most common stereotypes about India that you wish to shatter?

AVANTIKA: I would like to shatter through ‘Spin’ that, you know, Indians can only be in STEM because we have so much talent and our culture is specially so art-centric as well. We teach our kids Carnatic music and instruments and dance. So I hope that at least the American perception of us Indians would be that we are equally as talented and equally as capable in artistic fields as well in STEM. So that is one stereotype I would like to shatter I would also like to shatter (the belief) that all of our parents are rigid and super strict because even though they may be hesitant to send us to artistic fields for career-wise—STEM comes from a sense of protectiveness, and a sense of ‘we want to keep our kids safe and make sure they have a comfortable life’—but it doesn’t come from a hyper sense of control even though that maybe a by product. I hope this movie conveys the nuances of that kind of a relationship and enlighten the public.&nbsp;

<img alt="Indians are artistically inclined, feels the 'Spin' actor-dancer" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="6af7393d-c5b0-4f2c-a5ca-d9bd6e75b2fd" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/pjimage%20-%202021-08-15T122606.457.jpg" />

WION: India turns 75 today, what are your dreams and hopes for the Indian youth?

AVANTIKA: My dreams and hopes for the Indian youth is that we show the world how amazing we are. I think India is so underestimated in so many ways and I hope our youth is able to show everyone their power and all the things we are capable of, and I also hope that we make India a safe place for people from different walks of life. I hope that the Indian youth is able to change the mindset that India has had and begins to turn us into a more progressive direction and allow for LGBTQ+ youth to be themselves and for women to be themselves. I hope we are able to promote that kind of a direction and I feel like for such a beautiful country, we need to have a sense of beautiful sense of diversity for our community as well. That’s my hope!

WION: What are your aims and aspirations for your acting career? Do you see yourself being a full-blown lead in Hollywood movies, even as a grown up woman?

AVANTIKA: My aims and aspirations are that I&nbsp;would love to be a lead in a Hollywood movie even as a grown up. I chose this career seeing myself doing this for a very, very long time. Probably, for the rest of my life. I would absolutely love to do it and I am working really hard. Hopefully, it will happen for me. But, no one can tell the future, right&nbsp;(laughs!)?
&nbsp;

'Spin' is streaming on Disney + Hotstar.&nbsp;

So, this is the same process that i went through and Disney actually told me in the (audition) room—which is a bit unorthodox, that rarely happens—that I was booked and that was so exciting! It was like a full-circle project for me that I auditioned for and also the first big project that I booked. WION: As an Indian-American, what kind of racial discrimination have you faced so far, if at all? AVANTIKA: As an Indian-American, the kind of racial discrimination I have faced has mostly ever come up when I was younger. When I was younger, I had comments like 'Go back to your country', calling me a Paki (a slang for Pakistani immigrants living in America). I think it was common a lot for kids my age and people of South Asian descent faced, and making fun of me putting oil in my hair and making fun of the fact that I eat curry. It was just really disappointing comments and things that were being said by, unfortunately, kids my age which I think is even more hurtful to see. You know, a child spout that kind of hateful things. But, as I have grown up and seen the rise of social media, bring awareness to how these words can impact people, I have been fortunate to experience less of this racial discrimination and it’s helped my confidence a lot more. So, predominantly the racial discrimination I faced was when I was younger and that did kind of set the tone for my growth and the kind of insecurities I would have. But, I am finding that my confidence is growing because of how social media has made other South Asians and I feel less alone in our struggles and they are bringing awareness and bringing to light how these comments are affecting us. People are being a little bit more considerate and a little bit more sensitive, which I think is good. WION: Through 'Spin', what are the most common stereotypes about India that you wish to shatter? AVANTIKA: I would like to shatter through ‘Spin’ that, you know, Indians can only be in STEM because we have so much talent and our culture is specially so art-centric as well. We teach our kids Carnatic music and instruments and dance. So I hope that at least the American perception of us Indians would be that we are equally as talented and equally as capable in artistic fields as well in STEM. So that is one stereotype I would like to shatter I would also like to shatter (the belief) that all of our parents are rigid and super strict because even though they may be hesitant to send us to artistic fields for career-wise—STEM comes from a sense of protectiveness, and a sense of ‘we want to keep our kids safe and make sure they have a comfortable life’—but it doesn’t come from a hyper sense of control even though that maybe a by product. I hope this movie conveys the nuances of that kind of a relationship and enlighten the public. AVANTIKA: My aims and aspirations are that I would love to be a lead in a Hollywood movie even as a grown up. I chose this career seeing myself doing this for a very, very long time. Probably, for the rest of my life. I would absolutely love to do it and I am working really hard. Hopefully, it will happen for me. But, no one can tell the future, right (laughs!)? 'Spin' is streaming on Disney + Hotstar.

Owing to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, Walt Disney had to release some of its films—including ‘Black Widow’—both in theatres as well as OTT platforms, Disney Chief Bob Chapek said on Thursday.&nbsp;

&nbsp;“These films were conceived during a time when … we certainly didn’t know about COVID. Just like what we’ve done many times before, we’ve found ways to fairly compensate our talent so that, no matter what, everyone feels satisfied,” Chapek reported told trade analysts.&nbsp;

“Both Bob Iger (Chairman, Disney) and I determined this was the right strategy. And, just to reiterate, distribution decisions are made on a film by film basis. We will continue to utilize all options going forward,” the CEO added.&nbsp;
Disney’s other hybrid releases include ‘Cruella’, ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ and the recently released ‘Jungle Cruise’, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

Right before the release of his film, Johnson had openly supported the company’s decision to release it in theatres as well as on Disney +.

Scarlett Johansson, one of Hollywood's biggest and top-paid stars, was entitled to a percentage of box office receipts from the much-anticipated Marvel film, ‘Black Widow’, according to a lawsuit filed at Los Angeles Superior Court in July.

"It's no secret that Disney is releasing films like Black Widow directly onto Disney+ to increase subscribers and thereby boost the company's stock price -- and that it's hiding behind Covid-19 as a pretext to do so," said Johansson's attorney John Berlinski in a statement to a global news agency.

"This will surely not be the last case where Hollywood talent stands up to Disney and makes it clear that, whatever the company may pretend, it has a legal obligation to honor its contracts," he added.

A spokesperson for Disney—which owns superhero movie powerhouse Marvel Studios—dismissed the lawsuit, telling the agency in a statement that Disney had not breached any contract and that "there is no merit whatsoever to this filing."

"The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic," it had said.

US entertainment giant Disney said Thursday its online streaming services have boomed while it grapples with how to release films as the Delta coronavirus variant drives viewers from movie theatres.

Disney+ subscriptions in the recently ended quarter more than doubled from the same period a year earlier to 116 million, while its Hulu and ESPN offerings also attracted more members, the company said.

Disney chief executive Bob Chapek said on an earnings call that a priority is to tell "great stories" and win viewers by leveraging hit franchises such as its Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars movies and shows, and Pixar animated features and shorts.

The pandemic prompted Disney to release some films on its streaming service when contracts and conditions allowed with a focus on remaining flexible, according to Chapek.

"In light of the prolonged and unpredictable nature of the pandemic we needed to find alternative ways to bring our movies to consumers while theatres were closed," Chapek said.

"We will continue to utilize all available options going forward, learn from insights gained from each release and innovate accordingly."

Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney over its decision to release superhero movie "Black Widow" on streaming at the same time as in theatres, alleging a breach of contract which cost the star millions of dollars.

Johansson, one of Hollywood's biggest and top-paid stars, was entitled to a percentage of box office receipts from the much-anticipated Marvel film, according to a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The film was originally due for a big-screen release last year, but was delayed multiple times due to the Covid-19 pandemic and was eventually released in July simultaneously in theatres and on Disney+.

"We value flexibility in terms of making as many last minute calls as we can," Chapek said about the future of theatrical releases for films.

"We did not anticipate the resurgence of Covid with the Delta variant that would have such a significant impact on the marketplace."

Disney's tactics regarding theatrical releases of films will have a "big impact" on the industry, according to Third Bridge senior analyst Joe McCormack.

Disney debuting all of its films simultaneously on its streaming service could potentially cut movie theatre revenue in half, he said.

- Covid costs -

Disney reported a net income of $923 million in the quarter ending July 3, compared with a loss of about $5 million during the same period last year when the pandemic closed its theme parks and other businesses.

"We ended the third quarter in a strong position, and are pleased with the company's trajectory as we grow our businesses amidst the ongoing challenges of the pandemic," Chapek said.

Disney's portfolio of streamers ended the quarter with a combined 174 million subscribers, according to Chapek.

"With Disney+'s launch in most major markets in the rearview mirror, the tough work has just begun," said eMarketer senior analyst Eric Haggstrom.

Disney said it was continuing to deal with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly on its theme parks, resorts and cruise ships.

Theme parks and resorts have been able to reopen at various points, but with reduced capacity.

Disney has delayed, shortened or canceled theatrical runs for films and stage plays, and as theatres re-open the company faces capacity restrictions and shifts in regulations as the pandemic ebbs and surges.

"Although most film and television production resumed beginning in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020, we continue to see disruption of film and television production, as well as live sports events, depending on local circumstances," the company said in the earnings release.

"We have and will continue to incur additional costs to address government regulations and implement safety measures for our employees, talent and guests."

Disney expects costs related to the pandemic to total about $1 billion in the current fiscal year.

Disney shares were up more than five percent in after-hours trading that followed release of the earnings figures.

The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) President, Gabrielle Carteris, has made a few observations about Disney’s handling of the ‘Black Widow’ lawsuit by Scarlett Johansson. And it is not in the media giant’s favour.&nbsp;

“Disney should be ashamed of themselves for resorting to tired tactics of gender-shaming and bullying. Actors must be compensated for their work according to their contracts. Scarlett Johansson is shining a white-hot spotlight on the improper shifts in compensation that companies are attempting to slip by talent as distribution models change,” Carteris reportedly said.&nbsp;

She went on to add, “Nobody in any field of work should fall victim to surprise reductions in expected compensation. It is unreasonable and unjust. Disney and other content companies are doing very well and can certainly live up to their obligations to compensate the performers whose art and artistry are responsible for the corporation’s profits.”
In late July, Johansson filed a lawsuit against the company alleging that the studio breached her contract when it released ‘Black Widow’ simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, a move she claims potentially cost her as much as 50 million USD.

In its initial statement on the suit, Disney lashed out, saying, “There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”

&nbsp;“Additionally, we are deeply concerned by the gendered tone of Disney’s criticism of Ms. Johansson. Women are not ‘callous’ when they stand up and fight for fair pay – they are leaders and champions for economic justice. Women have been victimized by pay inequity for decades, and they have been further victimized by comments like those in Disney’s press statements. These sorts of attacks have no place in our society and SAG-AFTRA will continue to defend our members from all forms of bias,” concluded Carteris.&nbsp;

Recently, Women In Film, ReFrame and Time’s Up have also released a joint statement to accuse the Walt Disney Company of a ‘gendered character attack’ in its response to litigation filed by the ‘Black Widow’ star.

Disney VS Scarlett Johansson: SAG-AFTRA President calls it ‘gender-shaming and bullying’ tactic

In a first, a Disney film will have an Indo-American story at its heart.&nbsp;

Yes, you read that right. Disney is releasing a full-blown movie with an Indian-American girl—Rhea Kumar (played by Avantika Vandanapu)—at the centre of its narrative. And, naturally, the director— Manjari Makijany, another Indian—felt the need to shatter the stereotypes sticking to the Indian Diaspora globally.&nbsp;

Speaking to a news agency, Makijany talked about the kind of ‘responsibilities’ she had shouldered while working on this project. “When I came on board for directing Spin I felt responsible and excited at the same time. Excited because it is one of the great opportunities for me as an Indian filmmaker to show our culture and portray the right representation of the next generation Indian-American community to the international audience, to the Disney fans,” she reportedly said.

“I also felt responsible because it is a chance to break all the stereotype that is showcased about Indian community, culturally. I wanted to get those nuances right. For instance, Abhay is playing an Indian immigrant, I made sure his character doesn't speak with a fake American accent! From production design, cinematography and every other department in the making of the film, I attempted to include diversity,” added the helmer.&nbsp;

&nbsp;‘Spin’ revolves around 15-year-old Rhea who is born and bred in America, and is of Indian descent. Over time, she falls in love with her school friend Max, which in turn, leads her towards her life’s true calling.&nbsp;

The director also touched upon the importance of blending East with the West.&nbsp;

“In one of the sequences, Rhea's grandmother is dancing to old Hindi film song 'Jab Chhaye' and in the end, there is a celebration song created by Indian music director duo -- Salim Suleiman. There are other music tracks that are sounding very young and fresh because our protagonist wishes to become a DJ! My responsibility as a film director was to get this very eclectic fusion in the right way,” Manjari makijani reportedly added.&nbsp;

Starring Bollywood actor Abhay Deol, along with Avantika Vandanapu and Meera Sayal, Disney’s ‘Spin’ releases in India on August 15 on Disney + Hotstar.&nbsp;

Disney’s ‘Spin’ director: Felt responsible for breaking stereotypes about India

Disney has revealed the first look of its Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser, a two-night Florida hotel experience that costs more than going on an actual cruise.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, Disney released more details about its Star Wars-themed hotel that included a trailer and an out-of-this-world price breakdown: 6000 USD per family to be precise.&nbsp;

A two-night immersive experience at Walt Disney World that’s billed as “part live immersive theater, part themed environment, part culinary extravaganza, part real-life role-playing game,” the company claims, as per reports.&nbsp;

The lowest announced pricing tier is 4,809 USD for two guests. That includes a standard cabin, food and drink (alcohol excluded, which would cost extra) and ‘the experience’ includes activities such as light saber training, bridge crew training and a planet excursion to Batuu (a.k.a. the Galaxy’s Edge park).&nbsp;

A family of four can expect to pay a minimum of $5,999 (approx).

However, Disney is yet to reveal the prices of the hotel’s upgraded rooms, dubbed the Galaxy Chess Suite — which includes two windows, looking out into “space” — and the Grand Captain Suite (comprising three space windows), but it would not be wrong to assume that these experiences are most impressive. There are other add-ons too such as Captain’s Table seating as opposed to eating at communal tables in the “Crown of Corellia Dining Room.”

Disney has also launched a FAQ section that aims to answer further guest questions that might have.

A two-night immersive experience at Walt Disney World that’s billed as “part live immersive theater, part themed environment, part culinary extravaganza, part real-life role-playing game,” the company claims, as per reports. The lowest announced pricing tier is 4,809 USD for two guests. That includes a standard cabin, food and drink (alcohol excluded, which would cost extra) and ‘the experience’ includes activities such as light saber training, bridge crew training and a planet excursion to Batuu (a.k.a. the Galaxy’s Edge park). There are other add-ons too such as Captain’s Table seating as opposed to eating at communal tables in the “Crown of Corellia Dining Room.” Disney has also launched a FAQ section that aims to answer further guest questions that might have. Star Wars: Galactic Starcrusier launches in spring 2022.

Women In Film, ReFrame and Time’s Up have released a joint statement to accuse the Walt Disney Company of a ‘gendered character attack’ in its response to litigation filed by Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson on Thursday.

Johansson filed a lawsuit against the company alleging that the studio breached her contract when it released ‘Black Widow’ simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, a move she claims potentially cost her as much as 50 million USD.

In response to her allegation, a Disney spokesperson said in a statement, “The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premiere Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”

Women In Film, ReFrame and Time’s Up didn’t take that well. In the joint statement, the organizations did not comment “on the business issues in the litigation” and focused instead on comments about the pandemic and her salary.

“While we take no position on the business issues in the litigation between Scarlett Johansson and the Walt Disney Company, we stand firmly against Disney’s recent statement which attempts to characterize Johansson as insensitive or selfish for defending her contractual business rights. This gendered character attack has no place in a business dispute and contributes to an environment in which women and girls are perceived as less able than men to protect their own interests without facing ad hominem criticism,” read the combined statement.

On Friday, Johansson also received support from her high-profile agent, CAA co-chair Bryan Lourd. In a rare move, Lourd also took issue with the tone of Disney’s statement.

“They have shamelessly and falsely accused Ms. Johansson of being insensitive to the global COVID pandemic, in an attempt to make her appear to be someone they and I know she isn’t. Scarlett has been Disney’s partner on nine movies, which have earned Disney and its shareholders billions. The company included her salary in their press statement in an attempt to weaponize her success as an artist and businesswoman, as if that were something she should be ashamed of. Scarlett is extremely proud of the work that she, and all of the actors, writers, directors, producers and the Marvel creative team have been a part of for well over a decade” Lourd said.

Scarlett Johansson VS Disney: Women in Film, ReFrame, Time’s Up accuse the giant of ‘gendered character attack’

"Jungle Cruise," Disney's new nostalgia-soaked adventure film based on a 1950s theme park ride, has an unexpectedly modern twist -- one of its main characters comes out as gay.

A scene in which Jack Whitehall's character discusses his sexuality with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Amazon boat captain, though far from ground-breaking by modern cinema terms, is a departure for the traditionally conservative studio.

Young British fop MacGregor does not use the specific word "gay," but explains how he broke off three engagements with women because his "interests happily lay elsewhere," prompting skipper Frank to raise a toast to "elsewhere."

"I felt that the scene was really exactly what it was, which was two men talking about what they loved, and who they loved," Johnson -- the world's top-paid movie star -- told a press conference this week.

But the exchange is likely to make waves upon the film's release Friday, with each of Disney's tiny steps toward LGBT representation in recent years having been slammed at home and abroad -- and not just by conservatives.

US evangelical group One Million Moms (1MM) organized a boycott of "Toy Story 4" in 2019 for briefly depicting two moms dropping their child at school, accusing Disney of "pushing an agenda and exposing children to controversial topics."

And a fleeting lesbian kiss in "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" was cut from versions of the film playing in Singapore and Dubai, where same-sex marriage is illegal.

But the historic "Star Wars" lip-lock was also condemned by LGBT rights advocates as tokenistic -- as was a brief scene in Marvel's record-grossing "Avengers: Endgame" in which an openly gay man participates in a support group.

The "Jungle Cruise" representation goes further -- MacGregor explains he joined his scientist sister (Emily Blunt) on her expedition to Brazil because she "stood by" him while others in World War I-era London spurned him because of who he "loved."

"It was a scene that we really wanted to get right," said Whitehall, a British comedian-turned-actor, who is straight.

Expanding on the theme at Sunday's world premiere in California, Whitehall told Variety he thought the scene was "significant" and "one that we certainly thought about and talked about a lot."

"I hope that it's a scene that audiences enjoy and I certainly felt at the time that I was proud of the work that we'd done," he said, adding that he hoped it would be a positive for LGBT children watching.

- 'Innuendo' -

But the film's failure to use the word "gay" has already stoked criticism on social media.

"Disney will really do anything to avoid using the word 'gay' in its mainstream content won't it," wrote Declan Cashin, a curator for Twitter.

Jeremy Blacklow, director of entertainment media at LGBT advocacy group GLAAD, said in a statement to AFP the "heartwarming exchange" was "a powerful addition to a big budget film that will reach audiences around the world."

But "the scene's innuendo makes it easy to overlook by anyone not paying close attention, or by youth who are too young to understand the reference," he added.&nbsp;

GLAAD's "Studio Responsibility Index" counted only 20 LGBTQ characters in films released by major studios last year, and 30 percent of those were only on screen for under one minute.&nbsp;

Blacklow called on Disney to include more diverse storylines in upcoming films including Marvel superhero titles such as "Eternals" and the upcoming "Doctor Strange" and "Thor" sequels.

- Shrunken heads -

"Jungle Cruise" follows Blunt's character Dr Lily Houghton and her brother as they employ a charismatic, pun-cracking but mysterious boat owner to sail up the Amazon in search of a tree with magical healing powers.

Following in the footsteps of "Pirates of the Caribbean," it is loosely based on the "Jungle Cruise" river boat attraction at various Disney theme parks -- the earliest of which dates back to the original opening of California's Disneyland more than six decades ago.

In another example of Disney changing with the times, the theme park rides in California and Florida were recently altered to remove offensive depictions of indigenous people who waved spears and traded shrunken heads.
