In a major overnight operation, the Delhi and Bihar Police jointly neutralised four of Bihar’s most-wanted criminals linked to the Sigma Gang, one of the most feared criminal networks in the region. The shootout occurred around 2:20am on Bahadur Shah Marg, between Dr. Ambedkar Chowk and Pansali Chowk in Rohini, Delhi, after police teams intercepted a suspicious vehicle. According to senior police officials, the gangsters opened fire when officers tried to stop their car. In retaliation, the police fired back, resulting in a fierce gun battle that lasted several minutes. All four gang members sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
The gangsters and their crime network
The deceased were identified as Ranjan Pathak (25), Bimlesh Mahto (25), Manish Pathak (33), and Aman Thakur (21) — all key members of the Sigma Gang, which has been operating across Bihar’s Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, and adjoining districts for several years. Ranjan Pathak, the leader of the gang, had a reward of ₹25,000 on his arrest. Police records reveal he was involved in at least eight major criminal cases, including five high-profile murders and multiple extortion rackets targeting business owners and contractors. The Sigma Gang, active for nearly seven years, was notorious for its organised operations involving extortion, contract killings, and illegal arms trafficking.
Police tracking
Investigators confirmed that Pathak had been openly taunting law enforcement agencies through social media posts and audio clips. In one intercepted recording, he allegedly discussed plans to expand the gang’s influence ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. Authorities had been monitoring their digital activity for weeks. Using phone tracking and informant inputs, teams from Delhi and Bihar coordinated the operation that culminated in the late-night encounter.
Post-encounter investigation
After the shootout, the entire stretch of Bahadur Shah Marg was sealed off. Forensic experts were called to examine the site, collect bullet shells, and document evidence from the gangsters’ vehicle. The police are now probing the Sigma Gang’s funding sources, hideouts, and possible links with other criminal syndicates in northern India. Authorities also believe that several Sigma Gang associates may still be hiding in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and raids are being planned to trace and arrest them.

Police were able to reach out to the accused by tracking their phone numbers. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vichitra Veer said that they have recovered Rs 1 lakh (approx. $1177) of the stolen money, the car used in the crime and the pistol.

Police were able to reach out to the accused by tracking their phone numbers. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that the Delhi Police have withdrawn the notification imposing a prohibitory order in the national capital.

Solicitor General Mehta apprised a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud when a plea relating to the issue was mentioned before the top court.

His reply came when a petition mentioned in the Supreme Court challenging the order of Delhi Police restricting large gatherings in Delhi, saying it would affect Ram Leela, Durga Puja pandals, Dussehra, and public gatherings.

Sunil, a priest of the famous Kalkaji Temple in Delhi and the Secretary of Manas Naman Sewa Society, who organises the grand Ramlila at the Satpula Ground in Chirag Dilli, filed the plea through advocate Prateek Chadha. He has challenged the Delhi Police Prohibitory Order banning assembly of five or more people from September 30 to October 5, saying that it will affect footfall during Dussehra and Navratri festivals. The petitioner said that the order would hinder religious celebrations during this period.

"The Ramlila and the fair around it see significant footfall each year during Dussehra and Navratri. Such festivities are organised in every nook and cranny of the city, and these were scheduled to commence on October 3, 2024. However, now, in light of the order assailed in this present petition, the commencement of these festivities across the city and long-standing traditions observed by innumerable residents of Delhi is in jeopardy for no constitutionally valid reason," the petition said.

"Given that the highly religiously significant period of the Navratas begins on 03.10.2024, any assemblies to celebrate the festivities in the notified areas [New Delhi, North Delhi, Central Delhi, and all the border areas of the NCT of Delhi] will be adversely affected," the petition read.

In the plea, the petitioner sought quashing and setting aside of the order dated September 30, 2024, issued by the Commissioner of Police. Delhi Police exercising and enacting the powers under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, prohibited the assembly of five or more unauthorised persons from September 30 to October 5. During this period, there is a prohibition on the assembly of five or more unauthorised persons, carrying of firearms, banners, placards, lathis, and so on and dharnas in public areas.

"The impugned order will have a significant effect on the ingress and egress of citizens wishing to enter the NCT of Delhi from other states," the petition said.

The reasons provided in the order do not relate to any emergency or unforeseen circumstance that necessitates the curfew sought to be imposed by the police, the petition said.

"The elections, amendments to the Waqf laws, as well as the upcoming festivals, are all well known to the public authorities in advance, and necessary security arrangements ought to be made for the same. The practice of invoking Section 163 of BNSS for such foreseeable scenarios, without a grave apprehension of security breaches or disruption of public order is unsustainable in light of the pronouncements of this Court," the petitioner said.

The petitioner submitted that it appears that instead of performing its duties in respect of the maintenance of law and order and crowd management, the respondent simply seeks to evade them by trying to prohibit legitimate gatherings that would ordinarily take place in plural and thriving metropolises such as Delhi.

The petitioner said that the Delhi police decision is a serious hindrance to the general day-to-day life of individuals, and their fundamental rights, which cause grave hindrance to the rights, life, and livelihood of the citizens of Delhi.

Ladakh climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was released from custody after nearly 36 hours on Wednesday (Oct 2). Wangchuk was detained by the Delhi police at the Singhu border on Monday (Sep 30) after he along with 150 protesters marched to the national capital from Ladakh.

Who is Sonam Wangchuk?

Sonam Wangchuk is an engineer and education reformer who hails from Ladakh. He is known for his innovations in sustainable technology. Wangchuk also designed the SECMOL campus, which runs on solar power and is free from using any fossil fuels even in cooking, heating and lighting.

Wangchuk was born in 1966 near Alchi in Ladakh’s Leh district. He enrolled in a school in Srinagar at the age of nine after his father Sonam Wangyala, a Congress politician, was stationed in Srinagar. However, he did not fit in due to language differences and moved to Delhi alone in 1977, where he pleaded his case to Vishesh Kendriya Vidyalaya’s principal.

He went against his father’s wishes to pursue a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Srinagar in 1987. He then started the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), where he launched Operation New Hope in collaboration with the government and villagers to bring educational reforms. He also went for Earthen Architecture at Craterre School of Architecture in Grenoble, France, in 2011.

Wangchuk has been involved with various NGOs and worked as an editor of Ladags Melong, the only print magazine in Ladakh. He is known for his sustainable innovations like Ice Stupa, which creates an artificial glacier for storing water, and mobile solar-powered tents for the Indian Army.

Wangchuk gained limelight in 2009 with Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, which is inspired by his life story. While many refer to him as "The real life Phunsukh Wangdu", he denies it.

What is Wangchuk fighting for?

Sonam Wangchuk launched a ‘Delhi Chalo Padyatra’ on September 1, demanding constitutional safeguards for Ladakh. The march was set to culminate at Rajghat on October 2, the day of Gandhi Jayanti, but Wangchuk and his followers were detained at the Delhi-Haryana border on the night of September 30.

Their key demands are the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, granting law-making powers to the locals to protect their land and defend their cultural identity.

Previously in March, he went on a fast-unto-death to demand constitutional safeguards. He advocates protection from industrial and mining lobbies in Ladakh and also started a 21-day Climate Fast.
