Ishant went on to say that their interactions rarely involve talks about cricket but it's all about humour and banter.&nbsp;"When we meet, we never talk about how we played so many Test matches. We never talk about it. We talk about funny jokes. This is happening, that is happening, look at this, look at that. Funny jokes," he remembered.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans will play against Delhi Capitals on Sunday (May 18) at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium. Gujarat are currently at top of the table with 16 points from 11 matches and need just one win to secure their spot in the playoffs.
The pacer also talked about his relationship with team's head coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ashish-nehra">Ashish Nehra</a>. He said, "If I talk about my relation, like that, I have played with him, we used to play together when I made my debut. Not only international debut, but even in my first-class debut, he was bowling, and I bowled a lot. So we know each other in many ways. We have meetings in the corridor, we discuss batters in the bus, that this batter can do this, or that, and this or that can happen.&rdquo;
&ldquo;So we never actually formally talk about meetings. In our meetings, we drink tea and coffee. So our meeting is not a formal meeting where we discuss batters, that we will do this, we will do that. It's a very chill atmosphere, and it&rsquo;s not just with me, but with everyone,&rdquo; he signed off.

IPL 2025: Mustafizur Rahman granted NOC by Bangladesh Cricket Board, set to join Delhi Capitals

Misery continues to rain on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/delhi-capitals" rel="dofollow">Delhi Capitals (DC)</a> in the Indian Premier League as several overseas players opt out of the ongoing season. After BCCI announced the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ipl-2025" rel="dofollow">IPL 2025</a> resumption plan, starting this Saturday (May 17) and ending on June 3 (Tuesday) following its suspension, the revised schedule clashed with the international calendar.
Among the boards whose most players featured in IPL 2025, Cricket Australia, Cricket South Africa, the ECB and CWI have their respective matches lined up during or around the IPL 2025 final date, putting plenty of those in a tight spot over abiding national and franchise commitments. However, those not part of any squad picked for the upcoming series have begun opting out due to security concerns.

Misery mounts on Delhi Capitals as star overseas players continue to opt out of IPL 2025

Australian pacer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mitchell-starc" rel="dofollow">Mitchell Starc</a> has decided against returning to play in the remainder of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ipl-2025" rel="dofollow">IPL 2025</a> for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/delhi-capitals" rel="dofollow">Delhi Capitals</a>, as the franchise resumes training ahead of their home game against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/gujarat-titans" rel="dofollow">Gujarat Titans</a> on Sunday (May 18). Per the latest report, Starc has informed DC about his decision, with the IPL side prepared to fight for their maiden IPL title without their top wicket-taker thus far this season.
A Times of India (TOI) report states that Starc was not part of DC&rsquo;s first training session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday (May 15), while Sri Lankan seamer Dushmantha Chameera was the only overseas player present at the team practice. South African players, including Faf du Plessis and Tristan Stubbs, will rejoin the team soon, while team mentor Kevin Pietersen has landed in India, linking up with the squad on Friday.
Delhi will host Gujarat on Sunday at home, but will train at the franchise&rsquo;s training ground in Aerocity on Friday. GT also landed in the capital city on Thursday evening and is scheduled to begin practice for their first game this Sunday.
<h2>Changes in the MI squad</h2>
Due to national commitments, several English and South African players scheduled to feature for their countries, including Mumbai Indians&rsquo; overseas duo of Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton, will not be part of the IPL 2025 Playoffs should MI qualify.&nbsp;
Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that all WTC-Final-bound players playing in the cash-rich league must leave the tournament by May 25 to prepare for the summit clash against Australia starting June 11 at Lord&rsquo;s.
Rickelton, part of the Test squad for the WTC Final 2025, would be among the eight South African players who would link up with the Test squad. Per the latest report, MI have roped in England batter Jonny Bairstow and seamer Richard Gleeson as their replacements for the remainder of the season.&nbsp;
As England hosts West Indies for the white-ball series, starting with three ODIs on May 29, the same day IPL 2025 Playoffs get underway, Jacks will return home; although he landed in India following the tournament&rsquo;s resumption update.&nbsp;
Bairstow, his replacement, remained unsold at the mega auction in November last year and has not featured for England since June 2024. On the other hand, Gleeson, 37, made his IPL debut last season while playing for Chennai Super Kings.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians sit in fourth place on the points table with 14 points from 12 contested matches.&nbsp;

Mitchell Starc opts out of remainder of IPL 2025 as Delhi Capitals resume training – Report

Bangladesh seamer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mustafizur-rahman" rel="dofollow">Mustafizur Rahman</a> has reached the UAE for the scheduled two-match T20Is starting May 17, the day <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ipl-2025" rel="dofollow">IPL 2025</a> resumes. However, he can still be part of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/delhi-capitals" rel="dofollow">Delhi Capitals (DC)</a> squad for the remainder of the tournament. In the latest development, as explained and confirmed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the board is working on managing Mustafizur's national and franchise cricket commitments.

Delhi roped in Mustafizur as Jake Fraser-McGurk&rsquo;s replacement for the remainder of the season. The BCB denied his participation by saying they never received any request for the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) required in this case. It put his IPL 2025 participation in jeopardy.

Per the latest report, the BCB continues to analyse the India-Pakistan cross-border situation, which forced the BCCI and the PCB to postpone their respective premier T20 tournaments. While the BCCI suspended IPL 2025 for a week owing to escalating tensions between both countries, the PCB tried staging the remainder of PSL 2025 outside of Pakistan in the UAE, only to face rejection from the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB).
Though both tournaments will resume shortly, the BCB finds itself in a tight spot over offering NOCs to the players playing across both leagues. A BCB source close to the information revealed they have no issues allowing Mustafizur to play in IPL 2025, but should that happen, they then have to offer NOCs to two other players, Rishad Hossain and Nahid Rana, who played in PSL 2025.
Given the board is conscious of making a rational decision here, they are also keen to avoid getting into an uncomfortable situation with their neighbouring boards &ndash; BCCI and PCB.
"We are not saying that we won't let Mustafizur play in the IPL for the Delhi Capitals, but at the same time, there is a thing called national commitment, and he needs to fulfil that," a BCB director said on request of anonymity.&nbsp;
"Along with that, if we had released him in that case, what would we have done with the two cricketers who took part in PSL, as they could have asked why we were not releasing them?
"We don't want to be in a position that allows any Board to point a finger at us," the source continued, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
<h2>How can he play in IPL 2025?</h2>
The latest report suggests that there are two possible scenarios.
Mustafizur could be released following the T20Is concluding on May 21 (Monday), and he could then link up with the DC team for the remainder of the IPL 2025 games. In another case, should Bangladesh release him after the first T20I (May 17), the left-armer would be available for DC&rsquo;s three league games, while the number could increase should DC qualify for the playoffs.&nbsp;
If they fail to progress further in the tournament, Mustafizur could re-link with the Bangladesh team for the away T20Is against Pakistan starting May 27.&nbsp; The BCB, however, awaits the government&rsquo;s directives regarding their tour of Pakistan.&nbsp;

Australian cricketer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/alyssa-healy">Alyssa Healy</a>, currently in India to support her husband <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mitchell-starc">Mitchell Starc</a> during the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/indian-premier-league">IPL</a> 2025 season, shared a chilling account of the chaos that unfolded in Dharamshala following a sudden power blackout during the IPL match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 8, 2025.
What began as a thrilling cricket match quickly descended into confusion and panic, not just for the players on the field but also for their families and support staff watching from the stands.
Speaking candidly in an interview, Healy described the eerie moment when the lights at the HPCA Stadium went out unexpectedly, plunging the entire arena into darkness. &ldquo;It was surreal. One moment we were enjoying the game, and the next, everything went black. There was no communication, no explanation &ndash; just darkness and uncertainty,&rdquo; she recalled.
<h2>'It was very quite scary'</h2>
What followed was even more disturbing. Healy revealed that players&rsquo; families and non-playing members were hurriedly evacuated from the venue. &ldquo;We were crammed into vans, quite literally shoved in without any clear idea of what was going on,&rdquo; she recalled. &ldquo;It was very disorganised, and frankly, quite scary. We didn&rsquo;t know if it was a technical glitch or something more serious.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Starcy even said at one point, &lsquo;I heard a town got smacked by a missile.&rsquo; It sounds outrageous, but in that moment of chaos and fear, anything seemed possible,&rdquo; Healy recounted.

The scene was further marked by confusion as several players, including Faf du Plessis, were seen scrambling to evacuate without having time to gather their belongings. &ldquo;Faf didn&rsquo;t even have shoes on. That&rsquo;s how sudden everything was. No one knew what was happening or what we were being evacuated from,&rdquo; Healy added.
But perhaps the most unnerving aspect of the ordeal, according to Healy, came in the aftermath &ndash; when they were informed that travel out of Dharamshala might need to be done by train, given logistical disruptions and the suspension of flights. &ldquo;That was the scariest part of all,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;The idea of traveling by train, especially given the current political tensions, just felt unsafe. It was the uncertainty that made it terrifying.&rdquo;
&ldquo;As players and families, we understand the risks of travel and competition. But in a tournament as big as the IPL, there must be clear protocols and assurances for everyone&rsquo;s safety. No one should be left in the dark &ndash; literally or figuratively,&rdquo; Healy concluded.

From CSK to MI, 6 teams with most IPL Playoff appearances

Punjab Kings (PBKS) head coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ricky-ponting">Ricky Ponting</a> was about to take off for home when the ceasefire between India and Pakistan came into force.
Despite that, the former Australian captain had the option to fly back to Australia but he chose not to, making a last-minute disembarkation from the Qantas plane packed with anxious passengers.
Ponting stayed back in Delhi but he also ensured that the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/punjab-kings">PBKS</a>' foreign players, who were considering the possibility of a full scale war between two nuclear-armed countries, were convinced about returning to India with the event likely to resume later in the week.
"It shows Ponting's character. Only he could have pulled that off. Not only he voluntarily decided to stay back, he gave a motivational talk to the foreign players who had left for their respective destinations but now will be joining the team at the earliest," Punjab Kings CEO Satish Menon was quoted saying to PTI.

Considering the heightened security at the Delhi Airport, the franchise officials had to make plenty of phone calls to ensure Ponting's luggage was off-loaded from the plane.
The anxious batch of players, who had to make a nervous road/train journey from Dharamsala to Delhi following the abandonment of the IPL game on May 8, included Marcus Stoinis, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis and Xavier Bartlett (all from Australia).
<h2>Jansen, Omarzai in Dubai</h2>
South Africa's Marco Jansen and Afghanistan's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/azmatullah-omarzai" rel="dofollow">Azmatullah Omarzai</a> have camped themselves in Dubai which is a short flight from India.
The foreign players are not used to something like this (war like situation). So, it was natural for them to feel anxious. Led by Stoinis, they all wanted to leave at the earliest and understandably so. But Ponting has convinced them to come back post ceasefire which I think is remarkable," said a source in the team.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; With the announcement of IPL resumption imminent, Punjab find themselves well-placed with majority of their star Indian and foreign players already in the country and on standby.&nbsp;With Ponting galvanising the team from a nervous situation, it could motivate the squad to do something special in this IPL.&nbsp;
In the first season of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer">Shreyas Iyer</a> and Ricky Ponting era, Punjab stand on the cusp of its first play-off berth since 2014. The other stranded team in Dharamsala was Delhi Capitals after the game was abandoned after Punjab Kings raced to 122/1 in 10.1 overs.&nbsp;The match will resume from that position at a yet to be decided venue and date.

The BCCI, IPL and the Indian Railways pulled off a brave feat of safely bringing all Punjab Kings-Delhi Capitals <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ipl-2025" rel="dofollow">IPL 2025</a>-bound players and staff members, including the crew, back to Delhi from Dharamsala on Friday (May 9). A day after their game at the HPCA stadium came to an unexpected halt for security concerns, causing panic within the camp, the tournament organisers ensured everyone remained safe and was home.
The latest reports also suggest that all players, Indian and overseas, will head home at the earliest amid prevailing cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.
On Thursday, the start of the PBKS-DC game was delayed by rain and then a wet outfield. Punjab won the toss and elected to bat first, with their openers making light work of Delhi's bowlers. The Indian batting pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh added 122 runs for the first wicket; however, Arya&rsquo;s dismissal on the first ball of the 11th over broke the stand, and with any hopes of the game getting underway.
Though floodlight failure was one of the early reasons behind pausing the game, the IPL chairman asking the fans to vacate the venue ensured the real reason behind it.

For that to happen, they are willing to scrap India’s tour of Bangladesh and the Asia Cup 2025, the schedule of which has yet to be announced, if the need arises.

IPL 2025 - All PBKS-DC-bound players reach Delhi safely from Dharamsala, BCCI thanks Indian Railways

Delhi Capitals are all set to play against Punjab Kings as they both look to book their place in the Playoffs of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). The contest on Wednesday (May 8) in Dharamsala will have bearings on the Playoff scenarios of Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals and Punjab. So what happens if Delhi Capitals beat Punjab Kings in Dharamsala?
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Will KKR get knocked out of IPL 2025?</h2>
If Delhi Capitals beat Punjab Kings, it could spell the end of the road for KKR in IPL 2025. The result would mean, Punjab Kings (15 points with 2 matches remaining), Delhi Capitals (15 points with 2 matches remaining) and Mumbai Indians (14 points with 2 matches remaining) will fight for a place in the top four. Since the three teams are also playing head-to-head matches between them and KKR, with two matches could reach a maximum of 15 points, at least two teams from the trio will reach 16 or more points.
KKR&rsquo;s defeat to Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday proved vital as they could reach a maximum of 15 points, even if they win against SunRisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Benglauru (RCB).
On the contrary, a defeat in either of those matches will spell the end of the road for KKR in the IPL 2025.
Lucknow Super Giants, on the other hand, will also have to win their remaining three matches to stand any chance of reaching the Playoffs in the IPL 2025.

<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">What next for KKR?</h2>
KKR will need Punjab Kings to win all their matches, including beating Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians in the head-to-head matches.
This means PBKS will finish in the top three, leaving Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Lucknow Super Giants scrambling for the fourth place. Since Mumbai and Delhi are facing each other in a head-to-head contest on Thursday (May 15), KKR will need the Capitals to win at the Wankhede Stadium. KKR will also need Lucknow Super Giants to lose at least one of their three matches.
If the above set of equations are achieved, then KKR and DC will finish on 15 points while Mumbai will end the league phase with 14 points. Lucknow will also end with 14 points or fewer, leaving Delhi and Kolkata scrambling for a place in the Playoffs.
In this case, NRR will play a vital role in sending either team to the IPL 2025 Playoffs.

As he breached the latest league law that expels the concerned player from registering in the auction for a specific period as punishment, Brook faced a two-year ban from the IPL. DC mentor Kevin Pietersen, who admitted looking forward to working with Brook, was &lsquo;bitterly disappointed&rsquo; with his decision this season.
It&rsquo;s not the first time that Brook pulled out of an IPL season despite getting picked in the auction. Following his debut season two years ago for SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), Brook pulled out of IPL 2024 for personal reasons before doing the same this time, but for a different reason. Brook&rsquo;s actions had repercussions, as IPL banned him from featuring in the auction list until the 2028 season.&nbsp;

<h2>'Wanted to work on his subcontinent game'</h2>
He also picked on Brook's weakness, especially in the subcontinent, saying that he wanted to work with him this season, but respects Brook&rsquo;s decision to pull out this season.
"So, he can properly play, but he has technical flaws in the subcontinent - in India, in particular. I really wanted to work with him, but people make their own choices in life, and you've got to respect them. He has a flaw playing spin in India - a real big flaw. Two months here, imagine what might have happened if he had fixed that?&rdquo; KP continued.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I would've worked the same with him as I did with [Joe] Root and [Jonny] Bairstow at the start of their careers. Root turned out to be the greatest player of spin England's ever had. I'm not saying it's because of what we did when he was a youngster, but we spent hours together batting in the nets, going through drills and practising. I love that stuff,&rdquo; Pietersen added.
Meanwhile, Brook's decision to skip this season led to Delhi making last-minute changes to its strategies, making KL Rahul bat at number four.&nbsp;
Reflecting on his statement a couple of years ago, wherein he called KL batting in the middle order &lsquo;the most boring thing&rsquo;, Kevin said, "He never lets me forget. Every day, we have a dart at each other. I'm the villain. He's hammering me!"

Every year Indian Premier League (IPL) season brings the best talent from around the world and one such talent was on display during KKR vs DC game in IPL 2025 on Tuesday (Apr 29). Batting first KKR posted a formidable total of 204 runs but it could have been at least four more if not were for a sensational catch by DC's Dushmantha Chameera.
The moment came in the second half of the last over when KKR's Anukul Roy smacked Aussie Mitchell Starc towards midwicket. The ball seemed sure to cross the boundary when Chameera flung himself to his left and grabbed the ball mid-air and horizontal to the ground. Have a look at the video:

Suryakumar Yadav does not have less than 20 runs in the whole tournament; there is always someone who is scoring there. KL Rahul is DC's man. They will be happy that Faf is back at the top of the order, but I just think the other three need to score runs more consistently. They need 3–4 guys to score consistently every game," Pollock added. Rahul, who switched sides from LSG to DC ahead of this season, has been their best batter with 371 runs in nine games. The next best is Abhishek Porel with only 257 runs - which highlights Pollock's point of consistency. DC have looked strong this season to go into the playoffs and before their three losses in last four games, they were among the top two teams on the points table along with Gujarat Giants. Currently, DC have six wins and four losses from 10 games which gives them 12 points. In the rest four games, they need two to three wins to finish in top two to have a double shot at making it to the final.

Opener Abishek Porel and KL Rahul struck half centuries and shared a 69-run partnership as Delhi Capitals thrashed Lucknow Super Giants by eight wickets in an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/indian-premier-league">Indian Premier League</a> match here on Tuesday (April 22).
Chasing 160 for victory, Porel scored 51 off 36 balls, while in-form Rahul struck an unbeaten 57 (42 balls) to make it a one-sided contest, as DC completed the task in 17.5 overs. Skipper Axar Patel made 34 not out off 20 balls.
Rahul also completed 5,000 runs in IPL on way to his half-century.

Earlier in the innings, opener&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/aiden-markram">Aiden Markram</a> scored a half century and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mitchell-marsh">Mitchell Marsh</a> too made a quick 45 but hosts Lucknow Super Giants could only manage 159 for 6 against Delhi Capitals.&nbsp;Markram scored a 33-ball 52, while Marsh smashed a 36-ball 45 as the opening pair put on 87 in 10 overs.
<h2>DC's pace trio</h2>
But LSG lost momentum thereafter as right-arm pacer Mukesh Kumar (4/33) struck twice in the 14th over, taking the wickets of Abdul Samad and Marsh. Ayush Badoni (36 off 21 balls), though struck three boundaries in the last over, bowled by Mukesh, to give some respectability to the total.
The trio of Mukesh Kumar (4/33 in 4 overs), Mitchell Starc (1/25 in 4 overs) and Dushmantha Chameera (1/25 in 3 overs) used different kinds of slower deliveries to perfection as LSG huffed and puffed their way past the 150-run mark after being 87/1 at the end of 10 overs.
In the remaining 10 overs, LSG could manage only 72 runs recording their lowest team total of the tournament so far.&nbsp;Pant's injured palm also hurt LSG's chances of propping up their total with the skipper coming in at No.7 for a two-ball duck.
The diminutive Ayush Badoni (36 off 21 balls), who relies more on timing the ball than brute power, did play his part but one doesn't know if that would be enough considering the depth in the Delhi Capitals batting.&nbsp;It was another superb show by the DC bowling unit, which has been brilliant throughout the first half of the tournament.

Against Rajasthan, he was at the top of his game. Accounting for RR&rsquo;s best batter, Nitish Rana, on 51, Starc returned to bowl the final over, with his team needing to defend just nine runs. For as good as he is, Starc bowled rockets and tight lines, defending nine runs, as Rajasthan could complete only eight, resulting in the game going into the Super Over &ndash; the first for this season and in four years.

<h2>Jaiswal&rsquo;s cheeky &lsquo;too slow&rsquo; remark</h2>
Playing his first Test Down Under and that too in Perth, where the pitches on offer aid the seamers big time, Jaiswal returned to the pavilion early in the first innings (to Starc) but made the most of his chance in the second, hammering his third-highest Test score. He took the attack to the seamers, including Starc, later taunting him, saying, &lsquo;too slow&rsquo; &ndash; referring to his bowling speed.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is a newbie in international cricket, and Mitchell Starc has been around for over a decade, both being great at what they love doing. However, following Delhi Capitals’ home game against Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday night in IPL 2025, which the hosts won inside the Super Over, both caught up candidly, with Jaiswal hugging and lauding the Aussie quick for his heroics in the last over during the chase and DC’s Super Over. Although both had crossed paths several times since Jaiswal’s ‘too slow’ remarks to him during the second innings of the BGT opener in Perth, where he scored a match-winning 161, this was their first public catch-up, with both greeting each other with all but respect. IPL 2025: DC captain Axar Patel drops hint on Faf du Plessis' return after Rajasthan win

Delhi Capitals beat Rajasthan Royals in season's first super over on Wednesday (April 16). After Delhi Capitals forced the match into Super Over, thanks to a superb last over by Mitchell Starc, Rajasthan Royals put up a score of 11 runs in the super over. KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs came to the crease and chased down the target in four balls.
Earlier in the innings, Abishek Porel's composed 49 was complemented by skipper Axar Patel's explosive cameo as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/delhi-capitals">Delhi Capitals</a> posted a mammoth 188/5 against Rajasthan Royals.
If Porel and KL Rahul (38) laid a solid foundation with a 63-run stand, Axar's blistering 13-ball 34, along with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tristan-stubbs">Tristan Stubbs</a>&rsquo; (34 no off 18 balls) late surge, provided the final flourish in an innings where momentum swung like a pendulum between the two sides.
It&rsquo;s the first time after 2023 that a score above 200 wasn&rsquo;t posted in IPL games in New Delhi. On a slow pitch, which offered ample help for slower deliveries and balls were stopping at times, RR bowled brilliantly to keep DC on a tight leash, as they reached 111/4 in 15 overs.

Put to bat first, Jake Fraser-McGurk got going by smashing Jofra Archer for two boundaries in the opening over. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/abhishek-porel">Abhishek Porel</a> took a liking to Tushar Deshpande&rsquo;s pace and lengths by hitting four boundaries and a six in the 23-run second over, with the wristy flick going over the deep-backward square-leg fence being the standout shot.
DC ended their power-play at 46/2. After that, RR kept things tight, especially with Wanindu Hasaranga bowling slower through the air and finding some grip, especially when bowling the googly.
With Sandeep bowling four wides and a no-ball, Stubbs took DC past 180 with a whipped four and slogged six, before being dropped by Theekshana on the last ball of the innings, as 19 runs came off an 11-ball final over.

IPL 2025: Delhi Capitals beat Rajasthan Royals in season's first Super Over

Delhi Capitals pacer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohit-sharma">Mohit Sharma</a> believes bowlers finally have something to smile about in IPL 2025. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he said the return of saliva application on the ball and a new rule allowing teams to change the ball giving bowlers more control and a fairer chance to perform.
&ldquo;100% it&rsquo;s helping,&rdquo; Mohit said when asked about using saliva again. &ldquo;In 70% of matches, the ball is tailing in. That&rsquo;s only because saliva is heavier than sweat. When one side of the ball is heavier, it helps in reverse swing. Sweat doesn&rsquo;t give that effect.&rdquo;
Use of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/saliva-ban">saliva</a> was banned in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic and it stayed for five years. Ahead of IPL 2025 though, most team captains requested that it (use of saliva) be brought back and the rule was changed consequently. For fast bowlers like Mohit, it&rsquo;s been a game-changer, especially in the second half of the innings when reverse swing becomes more effective.

And that&rsquo;s not all, another new rule is also giving bowlers an advantage. The team bowling second can now change the ball anytime after the 10th over, even if there&rsquo;s no dew. This is especially useful when the ball gets too wet or soft, making it harder to grip and bowl accurately.&nbsp;
<h2>'I can go for my yorkers confidently'</h2>
Mohit shared an example from DC&rsquo;s last match against the Mumbai Indians. &ldquo;There was some dew, and MI changed the ball after 13 overs. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/karn-sharma">Karn Sharma</a> came in to bowl with the new ball, and it turned straightaway. He got Stubbs out in that same over.&rdquo;
Mohit explained that a dry, harder ball makes a big difference, especially in the death overs. &ldquo;If I&rsquo;m bowling the 14th or 15th over after the change, I can go for my yorkers confidently. The ball won&rsquo;t slip.&rdquo;
These two rule changes, the use of saliva and ball change, may seem small, but they&rsquo;re helping bowlers to get back in the contest. In a tournament usually ruled by batters, IPL 2025 is slowly turning into a season where bowlers can finally fight back.

IPL 2025 | 'I can go for...,' DC pacer Mohit Sharma on ball change and use of saliva rules

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel was fined INR 12 lakh ($14,000 approx) for his team's slow over rate during their IPL 2025 match against Mumbai Indians at Arun Jaitley stadium on Sunday (Apr 13). This was DC&rsquo;s first offence for slow over rate this season and as per the IPL's code of conduct, the captain faces a fine for this. Earlier, there were match suspensions for slow over rates but after their removal, fines and in-game field restrictions are the only penalties for such offences.
While chasing 206, DC were solid stage with 113/1 after 10 overs. With 93 runs needed from the last 10 overs and nine wickets in hand, they seemed to have control of the chase. But things started to fall apart for DC after they lost wickets one after another.

The middle order failed to step up, and things got worse when they suffered a hat-trick of run-outs in the 19th over. Despite the efforts of their lower-order batters, they ended up falling short by 12 runs, which was a tough pill to swallow. It was their first defeat in IPL 2025 that displaced them from the top position in points table.
Axar Patel was clearly disappointed after the loss. &ldquo;We had the game,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I think we had soft dismissals from the middle order, some bad shots. We lost by 12 runs with an over to go, so we could have still won it. It can't happen that your lower-order batters will always save you in chases. There are some odd days where you play wrong shots, so I don&rsquo;t think there is any point in thinking too much about it.&rdquo;
Despite the loss, Axar&rsquo;s comments show his belief that cricket is a game of small margins. He acknowledged that it wasn&rsquo;t just the poor shots but also the run-outs that cost them the match. While DC would be disappointed, this defeat can serve as a lesson on the importance of maintaining focus and making smarter decisions in crunch situations. It&rsquo;s a setback, but with a bit of reflection and improvement, DC will hope to bounce back stronger in their next match against Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday (Apr 16).

"After Karun got out, their momentum broke," that&rsquo;s how Mumbai Indians (MI) spinner Karn Sharma described the moment things started to change in Mumbai&rsquo;s way against Delhi Capitals on Sunday (April 13) in IPL 2025.
DC were chasing 206 and were in a strong position at 113/1 after 10 overs, and it looked like they had the game in hand. Karun Nair was in sublime touch scoring 89 of 40 balls, but once he was bowled by Mitchell Santner, MI started to find a way back.

Karn, who was playing his first match of the season, came in as the Impact Player. He leaked runs in his first over but returned with three important wickets of Abishek Porel, Tristan Stubbs, and KL Rahul in his next three. He ended with 3/36 in four overs and played a pivotal role in slowing Delhi down.
Karn said, &ldquo;At that time, the situation was like they were going 10-11 runs per over. So my role was just to take wickets in the middle overs, and the way they were batting, every wicket was important. Obviously, KL Rahul is a big name and he had finished the game for them in the last match. But all the wickets were important for us at that time. After Karun got out, their momentum broke. And after that, we got two-three wickets quickly. That changed the game.&rdquo;
Mumbai also used the new ball change rule in the second innings due to dew. After the 13th over, they replaced the ball, which helped Karn take quick wickets.
He explained, &ldquo;When you get the ball replaced, the new ball has an upright seam, so it gives you purchase from the wicket. That helped us.&rdquo;
Piyush Chawla, former India legspinner, praised Karn&rsquo;s performance. &ldquo;You have to give a lot of credit to Karn because it's not easy when you come to a team after six-seven [five] games and then all of a sudden you get a chance in this kind of situation where the other team is going berserk.&rdquo;
Karn Sharma's heroics helped MI win by 12 runs and eventually break DC's five-match winning streak.

He explained, “When you get the ball replaced, the new ball has an upright seam, so it gives you purchase from the wicket. That helped us.” Piyush Chawla, former India legspinner, praised Karn’s performance. “You have to give a lot of credit to Karn because it's not easy when you come to a team after six-seven [five] games and then all of a sudden you get a chance in this kind of situation where the other team is going berserk.” Karn Sharma's heroics helped MI win by 12 runs and eventually break DC's five-match winning streak.

The IPL innings has been long in making for Nair who is now knocking on the door for a spot in the Indian cricket national team - specifically on the upcoming Test tour of England in June after the IPL 2025 get over.
<h2>Karun played three more Tests after scoring famous 303 not out</h2>
Karun, famously scored 303 not out in only his third Test, after being handed a debut in 2016 against England. He is only the second India batter to score a triple hundred in Tests after Virender Sehwag.
Despite popular belief, Nair was not dropped right after scoring his triple hundred but was selected to play against Australia in Feb-Mar next year. The batter, however, didn't play the first Test of the four-match series but was part of rest of the three games.
He replaced spinner Jayant Yadav to reinforce the batting after India lost the match in Pune by 333 runs. Nair, however, could not replicate his form in the next four innings he batted in and scored 26, 0, 23 and 5 before losing his place permanently.
As for IPL, he last played for Rajasthan Royals on May 3, 2022 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but managed to score only 13 runs. In the previous two games of the season, he had scored only three runs and was subsequently dropped from the side.
Nair's form could not have come at a better time with Indian batters, especially Rohit Sharma, struggling in red-ball cricket as evident on the last tour of Australia in Dec-Jan 2024-25 where India lost the five-match Border Gavaskar Series 3-1.
