Ahead of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/indian-premier-league">Indian Premier League</a> (IPL) 2025 season, India&rsquo;s wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul looked back on last year&rsquo;s auction and shared his excitement about joining Delhi Capitals.
Rahul, who captained <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/lucknow-super-giants">Lucknow Super Giants</a> (LSG) for the past three seasons, was released by the franchise ahead of the auction. Delhi Capitals secured his services for $1 million (₹14 crore) after parting ways with their star wicketkeeper-batter and captain, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rishabh-pant">Rishabh Pant</a>. However, Rahul will focus solely on wicketkeeping duties as Delhi has appointed Axar Patel as their new captain.
"The auction was a nerve-wracking experience," Rahul admitted while speaking to digital broacaster Star. "As a player, not knowing where you will end up is never easy. Over the years, I have seen how unpredictable auctions can be&mdash;there&rsquo;s no set pattern. As a captain, I was involved in building a team, so I understand the pressure franchises face. But as a player, it's even tougher because your career is at stake."

Rahul acknowledged that auctions could shape a player's future or bring unexpected challenges. "I was nervous, even a little anxious. But at the same time, I knew this was the right step for my career. There was excitement, though it didn&rsquo;t last long because reality set in quickly. I&rsquo;m really happy to join Delhi Capitals. Parth Jindal, the team&rsquo;s owner, is a close friend, and we&rsquo;ve had many discussions about cricket beyond the field. I know how passionate he is about the sport, and I&rsquo;m thrilled to be part of this team. We have a strong squad, and I&rsquo;m looking forward to the season ahead," he added.
<h2>'Delhi has an ideal mix of players'</h2>
On the team's composition, Rahul believes Delhi has assembled a well-balanced squad with an ideal mix of experienced players and young talent.
"This is a new experience for me&mdash;joining my fourth or fifth IPL franchise. It&rsquo;s both exciting and nerve-wracking. Every new team brings uncertainties&mdash;how the players will gel, how the management operates, and how the fans will react. But looking at our squad and how the management has built this team, we seem to have most areas covered," he noted.
"There&rsquo;s a great mix of seasoned players and young talent. I am eager to play alongside some incredibly skilled youngsters and learn from them as well. With players like Mitchell Starc, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/axar-patel">Axar Patel</a>, and Kuldeep Yadav&mdash;many of whom I&rsquo;ve played with before&mdash;we have a solid squad. I can&rsquo;t wait for the IPL to begin," the 32-year-old added.
Delhi Capitals will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Rahul&rsquo;s former team, Lucknow Super Giants, in Visakhapatnam on March 23.

IPL 2025: Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals squads celebrate Holi ahead of upcoming season

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals have announced T20 World Cup 2004 and Champions Trophy 2025-winning all-rounder Axar Patel as their new captain ahead of the 2025 season. The new IPL season begins on March 22 when defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Delhi was the only franchise who haven't announced their captain so far with all nine teams already settled on who will lead them in IPL 2025.

"It is my absolute honour to captain the Delhi Capitals, and I'm deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for placing their faith in me," Axar said in a statement released by DC.
"I've grown as a cricketer and a human being during my time here at the Capitals, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward.
"Our coaches and scouts have done a superb job at the mega-auction by putting together a balanced and robust squad, which has tremendous potential. We have plenty of leaders in the group, which is also very helpful for me, and I can't wait to join the team as we look forward to a very successful season for the Capitals, backed by the immense love and support of our fans," he added.
Previously, Axar had led&nbsp;DC in one off-game in the 2024 season but faced a loss in it. The 31-year-old has also led his team Gujarat in 23 domestic matches across formats, with most recent being in T20 tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Axar is the most experienced player for DC with 82 games after Rishabh Pant's departure in the IPL auction in November last year. He scored 235 runs last season and took 11 wickets as well.
Axar's stocks have risen sharply in the national set-up in recent times, so much so that he now bats at number five for India in the ODIs. He is seen as a direct replacement for Ravindra Jadeja's left-arm orthodox bowling and useful batting down the order.

IPL 2025: Two-time ICC trophy winning all-rounder Axar Patel is new Delhi Capitals captain

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) less than two weeks away, the Delhi Capitals (DC) are yet to announce their captain for the upcoming season. The rest of the nine franchises have already announced the skipper for IPL 2025, and a decision from DC is expected soon.
It was Rishabh Pant who led the side last season but he will now lead Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after being traded in the IPL 2025 auction. DC has multiple options for who can lead the team. Let's have a look at who can lead DC in IPL 2025:

KL Rahul - The wicketkeeper-batter was bought by DC from LSG in what can be touted as the like-for-like replacement for Rishabh Pant. Rahul has experience of leading an IPL side with LSG and Punjab Kings as well. Talking about his captaincy record, Rahul has led in 64 IPL games. He has 31 wins and 31 losses to his name, with two games being tied.
Axar Patel - The all-rounder could be a surprise pick by Delhi to lead the team. He has been associated with the team since 2019 and had led them in one off game in the 2024 season. Patel, however, lost the only game he captained the side in.
Faf du Plessis - The former Protea has enough experience of leading a side in international cricket as well as the IPL. He was the skipper of Royal Challengers Bengaluru until being traded to DC for the upcoming season. He has led in 42 IPL games and managed to win 21 of them with 21 losses as well.
DC, which have never won an IPL title, finished as runners-up in their best ever performance under Shreyas Iyer in the 2021 season.
Ahead of the upcoming season, they were also dealt a blow when England batter Harry Brook opted out for the second consecutive season.

KL Rahul or former RCB star - Who will lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025? Have a look at possible options

England batter Harry Brook has withdrawn from the upcoming 18th season of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/indian-premier-league" rel="dofollow">Indian Premier League</a> (IPL) for the second consecutive year, putting him at risk of a two-year ban from future editions of the cash-rich league.
As per ESPNCricinfo, Brook&rsquo;s withdrawal was conveyed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) last week and later communicated to his franchise, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/delhi-capitals" rel="dofollow">Delhi Capitals</a> (DC). DC had acquired Brook for $716,000 (₹6.25 crore) in the last auction. Neither the IPL nor Brook has provided an official reason for his decision.&nbsp;
However, he is considered a frontrunner to replace Jos Buttler as England&rsquo;s white-ball captain following the team&rsquo;s poor performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup and their failure to qualify for the ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy</a>. With 18 months remaining on his central contract and his commitments as an all-format player, workload management could be a contributing factor.

Brook&rsquo;s withdrawal may trigger a two-year IPL ban, as per a rule introduced ahead of the 2025 mega auction. The rule, established in response to multiple last-minute withdrawals, states: "Any overseas player who registers for the auction and, after being picked, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will be banned from participating in the IPL and IPL auction for two seasons. The only exception will be for an injury or medical condition, which must be confirmed by the player's home board."
Last year, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/harry-brook" rel="dofollow">Brook</a> pulled out of the IPL to be with his family following his grandmother&rsquo;s passing, which also led him to miss England&rsquo;s Test series in India. He was part of the Delhi Capitals squad but was released ahead of the 2025 mega-auction.
The upcoming IPL season for Delhi begins on March 24, with Delhi Capitals facing Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). In addition to finding a replacement for Brook, Capitals has yet to announce their captain for the season.
Brook previously played in the 2023 edition for Sunrisers Hyderabad, scoring 190 runs in 11 matches at an average of 22.11. His standout performance was a century against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

IPL 2025: Harry Brook opts out for second successive season, faces possible two-year ban

Sarah Bryce&rsquo;s journey in the 2025 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/womens-premier-league">Women&rsquo;s Premier League</a> (WPL) has been nothing short of inspiring. As the only associate player in the ongoing edition, she has embraced the intensity of the competition, relishing both the challenges and the excitement of being part of a high-profile tournament.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s definitely been a high-intensity tournament with lots going on behind the scenes as well, which has been fun to be part of,&rdquo; she said, reflecting on her experience. Having already played in The Hundred and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/womens-big-bash-league">Big Bash League</a>, Sarah credits those stints for helping her adapt to the pressures of the WPL. &ldquo;I think I&rsquo;ve been lucky to be involved in The 100 for a few years now and the Big Bash at the end of last year, which has helped prepare me a little bit for it.&rdquo;
Playing for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/delhi-capitals">Delhi Capitals</a>, Sarah has featured in all the matches so far, making valuable contributions both with the bat and behind the stumps. Her WPL debut was particularly memorable, with a quickfire 21 runs off just 10 balls against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mumbai-indians">Mumbai Indians</a>, shifting the momentum in her team's favor. Despite not always being required to make an impact with the bat, she has embraced her role with enthusiasm. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve not actually had to do a huge amount with the bat recently because we&rsquo;ve been doing so well, which has been great for the team. But I&rsquo;m really pleased with how it&rsquo;s been going.&rdquo;
Balancing the dual roles of wicketkeeper and batter is something Sarah enjoys, particularly the tactical element of the game. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s one of my favorite parts about cricket&mdash;the tactical side to it, the fact that you can be put in any sort of different situation and you&rsquo;ve got to find a way. I love that kind of thinking element.&rdquo; Adjusting to the number seven spot in the batting order has been a challenge, but one she has embraced wholeheartedly. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a slightly new role than what I play in a lot of teams, but I&rsquo;m really enjoying the challenge of trying to figure that out.&rdquo;
<h2>'I love training sessions'</h2>
Beyond her on-field performances, Sarah has found great value in working with the Delhi Capitals&rsquo; coaching staff, particularly head coach Jonathan Batty. Having previously worked with him at the Oval Invincibles, she has enjoyed the opportunity to refine her game under his guidance. &ldquo;They&rsquo;ve all been brilliant. I&rsquo;ve absolutely loved the training sessions, getting to pick their brains and get little nuggets off them.&rdquo; The experience of sharing the dressing room with world-class players has been another highlight for her. &ldquo;You can just pick up so much from them, seeing them go about their business.&rdquo;
Looking ahead, Sarah is eager to carry this experience forward as she prepares to represent Scotland in the upcoming global qualifiers in Pakistan. &ldquo;Obviously, getting used to conditions in the subcontinent is going to be invaluable,&rdquo; she noted, emphasising how playing in the WPL will benefit her international career.
Her long-term ambitions remain focused on helping Scotland qualify for major tournaments, including the next T20 World Cup in England in 2026. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s going to be tough work because it&rsquo;s only an eight-team World Cup, but that&rsquo;s a big goal for us.&rdquo; For now, her focus remains on putting in performances that help her team succeed. &ldquo;Being able to put in performances to help whatever team I&rsquo;m playing in be successful is the main goal at the moment.&rdquo;
Sarah Bryce&rsquo;s journey in the WPL is a testament to her determination and the growing opportunities for associate players in top-tier leagues. Her presence in the tournament is not just about personal success but also about paving the way for more players from associate nations to be part of future editions.
&ldquo;Hopefully, I can represent associate nations well and get more of us in future editions,&rdquo; she signed off.&nbsp;With her talent, work ethic, and hunger to learn, she is well on her way to making a lasting impact in the world of women&rsquo;s cricket.

Her long-term ambitions remain focused on helping Scotland qualify for major tournaments, including the next T20 World Cup in England in 2026. “It’s going to be tough work because it’s only an eight-team World Cup, but that’s a big goal for us.” For now, her focus remains on putting in performances that help her team succeed. “Being able to put in performances to help whatever team I’m playing in be successful is the main goal at the moment.” Sarah Bryce’s journey in the WPL is a testament to her determination and the growing opportunities for associate players in top-tier leagues. Her presence in the tournament is not just about personal success but also about paving the way for more players from associate nations to be part of future editions. “Hopefully, I can represent associate nations well and get more of us in future editions,” she signed off. With her talent, work ethic, and hunger to learn, she is well on her way to making a lasting impact in the world of women’s cricket.

IPL 2025: England legend Kevin Pietersen named Delhi Capitals mentor ahead of upcoming season

Delhi Capitals delivered a clinical performance to outclass Gujarat Giants by six wickets in a one-sided <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/womens-premier-league">Women&rsquo;s Premier League</a> (WPL) encounter on Tuesday. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shafali-verma">Shafali Verma</a>&rsquo;s explosive 44 off 27 balls and Jess Jonassen&rsquo;s unbeaten 61 off 32 powered Delhi to a comfortable chase of 128 in just 15.1 overs.
With this victory, Delhi moved to the top of the points table with three wins in five matches, though their net run rate remained negative (-0.223).
After Gujarat Giants posted a modest 127/9, Delhi lost captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/meg-lanning">Meg Lanning</a> early for just 3. However, Shafali and Jonassen took charge with an aggressive 74-run stand for the second wicket.

Shafali was at her destructive best, smashing five fours and three sixes before being trapped leg-before by Ashleigh Gardner. Jonassen, however, ensured there were no hiccups, playing a brilliant counter-attacking knock laced with nine boundaries and two sixes. Her first half-century of the season sealed a dominant win for Delhi.
Despite losing Jemimah Rodrigues (5) and Annabel Sutherland (1) in quick succession towards the end, Delhi cruised home without much trouble.
Earlier, Gujarat Giants endured a horrific start, crumbling to 60/6 by the halfway mark. The Delhi Capitals' pace trio of Marizanne Kapp (2/17), Shikha Pandey (2/18), and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/annabel-sutherland">Annabel Sutherland</a> (2/20) ripped through the top order, leaving Gujarat reeling in the powerplay.
Kapp set the tone by dismissing Harleen Deol (5) and trapping Phoebe Litchfield (0) leg-before. Pandey then struck twice in the fourth over, removing Beth Mooney (10) and Kashvee Gautam (0) in quick succession, both caught in the deep.
Titas Sadhu (1/15) added to Gujarat&rsquo;s misery, dismissing skipper Ashleigh Gardner (3), while Sutherland ended Deandra Dottin&rsquo;s brief resistance at 26.
Batting at No. 8, Bharti Fulmali fought back with an unbeaten 40 off 29 balls, hitting two sixes and four fours to drag Gujarat past 125. However, the lack of partnerships meant they never looked set for a competitive total.
With a well-rounded performance, Delhi Capitals reaffirmed their status as title contenders. While their bowling unit dismantled Gujarat&rsquo;s batting, their chase was executed with authority. Despite some late wickets, they never looked in danger.
The Gujarat Giants, meanwhile, remain under pressure, needing a turnaround to keep their playoff hopes alive.

WPL 2025: All-round Delhi Capitals thrash Gujarat Giants by six wickets

A blistering start by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shafali-verma">Shafali Varma</a> and composed knocks by Niki Prasad and Sarah Bryce helped Delhi Capitals secure a two-wicket win against Mumbai Indians in an edge-of-the-seat thriller during the ongoing Women's Premier League (<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/wpl">WPL</a>) at Vadodara on Saturday (Feb 15).<o:p></o:p>
Former Indian Women's captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mithali-raj">Mithali Raj</a> shared her insights on the thrilling match between Mumbai and Delhi in an interview with the digital broadcasters.
&ldquo;What a game we witnessed today! The intensity was remarkable. Last night, we saw a high-scoring chase of 201 with big hits, but today was all about nerve and momentum. The game kept swinging between the teams, and until the final ball, the winner was anyone's guess,&rdquo; Mithali remarked.
Reflecting on Niki Prasad&rsquo;s performance, Mithali emphasised the young cricketer's significant contribution. &ldquo;Delhi Capitals' victory was largely driven by Shafali Verma's explosive start, but Niki Prasad's crucial 35-run innings was equally pivotal. When wickets were tumbling, she held her ground, offering much-needed stability. Playing her first match after leading India to victory in the ICC Women&rsquo;s U-19 World Cup, she showed remarkable poise under pressure. There must have been nerves, but she battled through brilliantly. Her maturity stood out today. With solid support from Alice Capsey and Sarah Bryce, she anchored the innings. Though she fell short with two runs needed off two balls, her contribution was massive for Delhi Capitals.&rdquo;

Speaking about Shafali Verma, Mithali praised her fearless approach. &ldquo;Shafali never plays defensively. From the second ball, she was scoring freely, playing her shots with signature flair. The only way to stop her today was to outthink her, and I've been in that position myself. As the fielding side adjusted, bringing mid-on up and pushing deep square leg back, Shafali instinctively aimed to clear mid-on but ended up getting caught. That was a key moment in the match.&rdquo;
<h2>'It was a joy to watch Niki play'&nbsp;</h2>
Former West Indian cricketer Stacy-Ann King also lauded Niki Prasad&rsquo;s innings, saying, &ldquo;We knew her potential from the India U-19 team, though she didn&rsquo;t get many opportunities to bat with G Trisha and Kamalini in form. After a slightly shaky start, she found her rhythm and played her shots beautifully. It was a joy to watch.&rdquo;
Analysing Mumbai Indians' performance, King highlighted a crucial lapse. &ldquo;Harmanpreet mentioned that not batting the full 20 overs cost Mumbai. Even a single run in that phase could have changed the result. This is a learning opportunity for them to reassess their approach, especially against spinners. Hayley Matthews took key wickets, including Shafali and Sarah, but conceded 15 runs before that. Both teams can learn a lot from each other about pacing their innings and fine-tuning their bowling strategies.&rdquo;

The 19th over was a thrilling one. While Shikha was run out for three, Radha Yadav tonked the final ball for a six, bringing down the equation to 10 runs in the last over.<o:p></o:p>

Sports, Cricket: The Meg Lanning-led side reached Vadodara ahead of their tournament-opening game against Mumbai Indians on February 15 after their pre-season camp in Pune

Delhi Capitals have reached the Women's Premier League (WPL) final twice, demonstrating their consistency and strength as a team. However, they have yet to secure the coveted title. As they gear up for the upcoming season, the focus remains on refining their strategy, building on past successes, and making slight tactical adjustments to take that final step toward victory. Exclusive | WPL 2025: MEG-nitude of change as Delhi Capitals chase elusive trophy

With just days remaining for the start of WPL 2025, former India men&rsquo;s cricketer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/aakash-chopra">Aakash Chopra</a> believes the Delhi Capitals&rsquo; are one of the favourites to win the title this year, saying that despite the trophy eluding them twice, their consistency in playing will make them go one step further this time.
DC have been table-toppers in league stages of WPL 2023 and 2024, but have ended up runners-up on both occasions, including at their home ground <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/arun-jaitley-cricket-stadium">Arun Jaitley Stadium</a>. DC will open their WPL 2025 campaign against Mumbai Indians in Vadodara on February 15.
&ldquo;Success is always defined by trophies, but in the first two seasons of the TATA WPL, Delhi Capitals have truly stood out with their style of play and consistency. I know they haven&rsquo;t won a title yet, but they came very close last season. Given their performances, they will definitely be one of the favourites this year as well,&rdquo; Chopra said in an interview to the digital broadcasters.

<h2>Who will open for Delhi Capitals?</h2>
DC&rsquo;s opening pair will once again be captain Meg Lanning and young <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shafali-verma">Shafali Verma</a>, but Chopra sounded not too optimistic about them clicking as a pair in WPL 2025. Meg has played cricket sporadically since her international retirement, while Shafali has been out of the Indian team set-up after a poor ODI series against New Zealand last year.
It meant Shafali was back to playing domestic cricket, and finished as the leading run-getter in the Senior Women's One-Day Challenger Trophy, amassing 414 runs in five matches at an average of 82.80 and a strike rate of 145.26, including hitting one hundred and three fifties.
She was also the highest run-scorer in Senior Women's One Day Trophy via 527 runs at an average of 75.29 and a strike-rate of 152.31. &ldquo;Since Meg Lanning&rsquo;s retirement from international cricket, she hasn&rsquo;t been in her best form. Meanwhile, Shafali Verma has also lost her spot in the Indian squad.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Neither of them has been scoring runs consistently, but I&rsquo;m eager to see how they perform in Season 3 of the WPL. One thing is certain&mdash;it&rsquo;s going to be both challenging and exciting,&rdquo; concluded Chopra.

WPL 2025: Delhi Capitals will be one of the favourites to win the title, says former Indian batter

Almost a fortnight after the much-discussed IPL auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Delhi Capitals' new head coach Hemang Badani opened up on Rishabh Pant’s shock departure from the franchise. Per DC’s co-owner Parth Jindal, Pant leaving the IPL team he captained the previous season was never about the money. But Badani’s comments tell a different story.

Pant entered the IPL 2025 mega auction for a purpose, and with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bagging him for a whopping $3.18 million (INR 27 crore), making him the costliest player ever, it perhaps served it.

Although DC also chased Pant, even willing to use an RTM or right to match option for him at $2.4mn (INR 21 crore), LSG outbid them, offering Pant the staggering amount and eventually securing him for three seasons.

In a chat with former India cricketer and CSK batter Subramaniam Badrinath during a YouTube show, Badani revealed what happened behind the scenes.&nbsp;

"I think it's the other way around. He wanted not to be retained. He said he wanted to go to the auction and test the market. If you want to retain a player, both parties (the team and the player) have to agree on certain things. We tried talking to him; the management tried talking to him. Badani also admitted that Delhi was always keen to retain Pant in the first place.

However, the India keeper-batter insisted on entering the auction and testing the market, believing chances of him getting for money were higher, which eventually happened.&nbsp;

“Yes (Delhi Capitals were interested in retaining him). He said he wanted to go to the auction and test the market. He said he had a feeling that there were chances he would get more money than the highest cap for retained player, which is Rs 18 crore."&nbsp;

"And, at the end of the day, he felt he was worth more. And the market said the same thing. He got Rs 27 crore. Good for him. He is a very good player. We will obviously miss him. But, life goes on," Badani added.&nbsp;

In a social media statement earlier, Pant had said the decision not to continue playing for DC wasn’t motivated by money.&nbsp;

IPL 2025: ‘He said he wanted to go…’ – Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani opens up on Rishabh Pant’s departure

Prithvi Shaw was the captain of India’s Under-19 World Cup winning team in 2018; he is among the 17 Indian batters to date to score a Test hundred on debut; even experts, fans, and ICC’s YouTube channel called him the next Sachin Tendulkar only for him to get distracted and find no buyers in the just concluded mega auction in Jeddah. Delhi Capitals ex-coach Pravin Amre reflected on his downfall.&nbsp;

None of the ten IPL teams bid for Shaw, leaving him nowhere in India’s top-flight cricket.

Considering Shaw is not on BCCI's central contract list due to several reasons related to fitness and off-field chaos that made headlines earlier, and having not played one whole season of IPL since 2021, his cricket career has come down crashing.

Amre, who worked with Shaw at Delhi Capitals during the batter’s last run in the IPL, commented on his current status, saying Shaw could have earned $3.5 million (INR 30-40 crore) by the age of 23. Amre added because Shaw failed to handle the glamour and money that IPL brought along, he has himself to blame.

While Shaw’s contemporaries, Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, are top players for India and their respective IPL teams, earning in crores, Shaw remained unsold despite his lower base price this time (INR 75 lakh).

"It's so disappointing to see that a talent like him is going in reverse direction... Even today, he can hit a 30-ball fifty in the IPL. Maybe he couldn't handle the glamour and money, the side-effects of the IPL. His example can be a case study in Indian cricket... Talent alone can't take you to the top. The three Ds - discipline, determination and dedication - are important," Amre said of Shaw during a chat with Times of India (TOI).

<h2>Don't be another Kambli - Amre to Shaw</h2>

Amre continued how he (three years ago) gave Shaw Vinod Kambli’s example, hoping for him to learn from his experience and try and work harder to avoid suffering the same fate; however, as destiny had it, Shaw seemed to be on the same track.

"Three years back, I gave him Vinod Kambli's example. I've seen Kambli's downfall from close quarters. It's not easy to teach certain things to this generation. Thanks to being retained by DC, Prithvi must have earned Rs 30-40 crore by the time he was 23. Will even an IIM graduate get that type of money? When you earn so much at such a young age, you tend to lose focus," Amre continued.

Meanwhile, Amre wants Shaw to take this snub as a positive, as he has age on his side and the talent to bring him back on track.

"I hope he takes this IPL auction snub positively. It's an eye-opener for him. He's still got age on his side. He's just 25," Amre noted.&nbsp;

ALSO READ: BGT 2024/25 - Damien Fleming hails India quick Jasprit Bumrah as ‘terminator’ Amre, who worked with Shaw at Delhi Capitals during the batter’s last run in the IPL, commented on his current status, saying Shaw could have earned $3.5 million (INR 30-40 crore) by the age of 23. Don't be another Kambli - Amre to Shaw Amre continued how he (three years ago) gave Shaw Vinod Kambli’s example, hoping for him to learn from his experience and try and work harder to avoid suffering the same fate; however, as destiny had it, Shaw seemed to be on the same track. "I hope he takes this IPL auction snub positively. It's an eye-opener for him. He's still got age on his side. He's just 25," Amre noted. (With inputs from agencies)

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) co-owner Parth Jindal has revealed the reason behind their marquee player Rishabh Pant's exit from the team. Pant, one of the most fearsome T20 players in the world, wasn't retained ahead of the recently-concluded mega auction.&nbsp;

"My heart wanted him back in the auction, and I tried getting him back. Kiran also was like, it is OK," Jindal said while talking to RevSportz.

"We will make up later. Both of us will make up with him after the auction if we get him, we will figure it out. We tried, but then the price became too high. So, it was nothing to do with ownership. It was a joint decision that we took," he added.

As for the reason behind not retaining Pant, Jindal noted: "I think we were very aligned as an ownership group. It was a collective decision that was taken. We had a lot of discussions with Rishabh. There were things that we expected of Rishabh that we did not get last season or in the previous seasons and we gave him honest feedback on that," Parth said.

"We both, GMR, JSW, we are one family. We are one, we are united and it was a decision we took. We gave him feedback. Feedback was not taken as we expected it to be taken. He took an emotional call. He has also grown up in this franchise and he was a young boy when he started," he added.

The batter, however, went on to become the costliest buy in IPL history after being acquired by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for INR 27 crore ($3.21 million). While DC tried to use Right-to-Match (RTM) option to retain the southpaw, the price became too steep for them.

IPL 2025: 'Feedback was not taken...,' says DC owner Parth Jindal on why Rishabh Pant wasn't retained

KL Rahul parted ways with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) during the two-day IPL 2025 mega auction, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. On the first day of the auction proceedings, Rahul was up for grabs as the Delhi Capitals (DC) acquired him for INR 140 million (INR 14 crore) with LSG not using the Right To Match (RTM) card. Rahul led the Lucknow franchise from IPL 2022-24. However, the franchise failed to reach the playoffs in IPL 2024 and a lot of questions were raised on Rahul's strike rate. LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka's animated chat with Rahul during the 2024 edition also made a lot of noise. Hence, his exit was always on the cards.

After his departure, Rahul reacted on X with a heartfelt post. He wrote on the social media platform, "Grateful to the coaches, teammates and the fans who made this journey with LSG unforgettable. Thank you for the trust, memories, energy and unwavering support. Here’s to new beginnings!"

IPL 2025: 'Thank you...', KL Rahul reacts as he parts ways with LSG to join DC

Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif slammed Prithvi Shaw after the youngster went unsold in the just-concluded IPL 2025 mega auction, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Shaw had a base price of INR 7.5 million (75 lakhs), but still failed to find any takers in the two-day mega auction. Kaif has worked closely with Shaw during his tenure as Delhi Capitals (DC) assistant coach and revealed how the team management kept giving chances to Shaw but the Indian opener hardly got going for the DC franchise, where he played from 2018-2024.&nbsp;

<h2>'He had a lot of potential and DC backed him to the hilt'</h2>

Speaking on Jio Cinema during the IPL auction, Kaif said, "Delhi has backed Prithvi Shaw a lot. DC hoped he is a powerplay player and would hit 6 boundaries in one over. And he did that too. He hit Shivam Mavi for 6 fours in an over. He had a lot of potential and DC backed him to the hilt. We always thought that if Shaw manages to score, we will win. And we gave him a lot of chances."

Kaif further opined, "There were meetings at night where we would sit and ponder if Prithvi should play because he has been failing. So at night we would decide that Prithvi would not be in the playing XI, and then later on the day of the match, we would change our decision - that, no he will because maybe if he goes big, we would win." He added, "Prithvi got a lot of chances and teams have now finally moved on, and it is a matter of embarrassment that he did not get a bid for Rs 75 lakh. Maybe now, he finally goes back to basics. Someone like Sarfaraz Khan got into the national team by scoring lots and lots of runs."

Shaw rose to fame after leading India to the U-19 World Cup&nbsp;title in 2018. He earned an IPL contract from the DC franchise, then known as the Delhi Daredevils (DD), but ended his journey with the team with&nbsp;1,892 runs in 79 matches, at an average of&nbsp;23.95 and strike-rate of 147.47.

IPL 2025 mega auction: Axar Patel surprises Delhi Capitals fan contest winners - WATCH

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant broke his silence on parting ways with IPL franchise Delhi Capitals (DC), ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction, stating that the reason was not money.&nbsp;The swashbuckling keeper-batter, currently part of India's Test squad who is gearing up for the Australia series starting on Nov 22 (Friday) in Perth, responded to a post by one of the IPL broadcasters, where former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar reasoned out why Delhi chose to move on from Pant before the mega auction. Gavaskar felt the money was the main reason, however, Pant rubbished all such claims.&nbsp;

Responding to Gavaskar's claims, Pant wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "My retention wasn’t about the money for sure that I can say." Here is the post:

Gavaskar had told Star Sports, "What I feel is Delhi Capitals would want Rishabh Pant back in their squad. Sometimes, when a player has to be retained, there are talks between the franchise and players over the fees, as expected. As some of the players who have been retained by their franchises, they have gone for more than what the No. 1 retention fee deduction would be. So clearly, I think there may be some disagreement there. But, my feeling is Delhi would want Rishabh Pant back."

Ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction, slated to be held in&nbsp;Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Nov 24 and 25, DC announced their retention list, comprising Axar Patel (INR 165 million or 16.5 crore), Kuldeep Yadav (INR 135 million or 13.5 crore), Tristan Stubbs (INR 100 million or 10 crore) and Abhishek Porel (INR 40 million or 4 crore). Pant, who led DC in IPL 2021, IPL 2022 and IPL 2024, is set to enter the auction proceedings. He is expected to be sold at a whopping price. DC can use the Right To Match (RTM) card to bring back Pant, however, it seems the keeper-batter will find a new franchise for the next IPL edition.

Not about money: Rishabh Pant breaks silence on leaving Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

Former Australia captain and India coach Greg Chappell contacted out-of-favour opener Prithvi Shaw over his career crashing due to fitness and disciplinary issues. Dropped from the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad (after two rounds) for the ongoing season due to fitness concerns, Shaw, once tipped to be India’s next ‘big thing’, is nowhere to be found in this conversation for a long time.

Per a report in the Times of India, Chappell wrote to Shaw, urging him to get over his recent setbacks on and off the field, offering him assistance to get back on the right path.&nbsp;

Chappell, who, during his time with the Indian Cricket Team, made headlines for all good, bad and ugly reasons, cited examples of the great Sir Don Bradman and himself, saying both revived their careers after being dropped at a certain point. &nbsp;

Shaw’s downfall began when Mumbai lost trust in him following his underwhelming performances in the first two rounds this season; however, they cited fitness and disciplinary issues as reasons behind his omission. Moreover, Shaw’s IPL franchise, Delhi Capitals, also decided against retaining him ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

"The past doesn't define you, Prithvi. It's what you do from here that matters. You're still in your prime, with so many years ahead to make your mark. Take this time to visualise the cricketer and person you want to become. Surround yourself with people who inspire you to improve," Chappell wrote in the letter, as quoted by the Times of India.

"Remember, setbacks are a part of every great athlete's story. Even legends like Don Bradman faced the disappointment of being dropped and had to fight their way back. What made them great was not avoiding challenges, but how they responded to them."

Chappell wrote asking Shaw to embark on a journey of self-reflection, which led Bradman and himself to find their right paths in professional cricket.

"That shift – from results-focused to process-focused – transformed my approach to both practice and matches. I encourage you to embark on a similar journey of self-reflection. It’s easy to blame circumstances, but ultimately, your response to these challenges will define your path. Elite athletes know that discipline and sacrifice are essential. It’s about honing not just your physical game, but your lifestyle – from diet to fitness – with the understanding that the pain of discipline is far less than the pain of regret," Chappell wrote.

Shaw made his India debut six years ago, scoring a Test hundred in his maiden outing against West Indies in Rajkot. Shaw played in five Tests for India, including his failed stint Down Under the last time. The right-handed batter, however, made a name for himself in the English County last year, scoring the bulk of runs, but failed to fight for a spot in the Indian Team across formats.

In the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai last season, Shaw played a handy role in helping his team clinch the domestic title, scoring 451 runs across nine innings, averaging 83.52 at a strike rate of 58.5. Even against the Rest of India (ROI), Shaw hit a vital fifty for Mumbai.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Take care of your body’</h2>

Chappell concluded by asking Shaw to take care of his body and build strength and focus to move out of this dark area.

"Take care of your body, get the right amount of rest, and build the strength and focus you need. The door back to the Indian team is open if you're willing to walk through it, but it requires a commitment to growth and change. Know that I – and many others – believe in you and are here to support your journey back to the top. If there's ever a way I can help or if you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out. You have everything within you to reach your full potential. Wishing you all the best on this journey. Regards, Greg," he added.

Ace Indian keeper-batter Rishabh Pant is on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) radar ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The latest reports suggest that Delhi Capitals have decided against retaining their captain and marquee player, and with Pant entering the mega auction, CSK are among several teams eyeing&nbsp;his services.

The five-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings, are said to retain their skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, seamer Matheesha Pathirana and former captain and star player MS Dhoni (under the uncapped player category). Though CSK is undecided over retaining all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube is another name they will take a final call on with the deadline fast approaching.

However, with MS Dhoni hinting at enjoying his last few years in the IPL, the franchise is looking forward to the future; who better than to replace Dhoni with India Test great Pant at CSK?&nbsp;

With Pant bringing along the captaincy perk, several teams will approach him during the mega auction, scheduled for late next month. To cut down on competition, CSK might put Jadeja’s name in the auction to make more room for Pant should the management decide to bring him on board from next season onwards.

Even if CSK retains four or five players, they’d have RTM options to be used for Jadeja or any other player.

CSK will look at all options - although given how much they value their players, considering retaining their core group over the years, CSK will do everything possible to have Jadeja on board.&nbsp;

With Pant, CSK has to strategise well and plan accordingly, keeping an option open for someone else if the bid for Pant goes beyond their purse for him.&nbsp;

Another name the CSK could chase is India keeper-batter KL Rahul, who also said to part ways with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the auction.&nbsp;

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Rishabh Pant on CSK’s radar after DC exit – Reports

Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rishabh Pant have decided to part ways as the association finally comes to an end since 2016. As Thursday (Oct 31) is the retention deadline day, DC and Pant have separated with the star batter set to enter the IPL 2025 mega auction, to be held later in the year. Meanwhile, DC have retained four players: Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs, Kuldeep Yadav and Abhishek Porel.&nbsp;

As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, it is learnt that talks between DC's ownership group and Pant failed despite stretching over months and, hence, the star India keeper-batter has been released. However,&nbsp;it is understood that the 2020 runners-up will still&nbsp;attempt to buy back Pant via the Right To Match (RTM) card in the auction proceedings. The franchise will have two RTM cards available at the auction table.

With three capped and one uncapped retentions, DC's purse will be depleted by at least INR 470 million (INR 47 crore),&nbsp;they will have INR 730 million (INR 73 crore) to rebuild their squad at the IPL 2025 auction.

Pant joined the DC franchise in 2016 and soon became a regular in the line-up. He became&nbsp;DC's permanent captain in IPL 2022 and remained at the helm till the 2024 season (he missed the IPL 2023 edition due to a car crash). Under him, DC had a mixed run, ending at the middle of the table. However, he led the team to the playoffs in IPL 2021, where he led the whole season after then captain Shreyas Iyer's injury.

For DC, they have retained Axar (INR 180 million or 18 crore), Kuldeep (INR 111 million or 11 crore), Stubbs (INR 111 million or 11 crore) and uncapped player Porel (INR 40 million or 4 crore). If they are not able to reacquire Pant at the auction, they will have to pick&nbsp;a new captain.

Per the latest reports, the DC’s ownership took this call to overhaul the coaching staff and overall running structure of the franchise that is yet to win an IPL title. As part of the franchise’s restructuring, DC’s co-owners – GMR Group and JSW Sports – are said to be swapping the operational leadership roles every two years for the respective teams in the IPL and the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

In a media statement on Thursday (Oct 17), the franchise said, "Key decisions like auctions, captaincy, player release and retentions of both teams will be made by the Delhi Capitals' board, and will be decided mutually by senior leadership of both groups."

<h2>Badani’s impressive CV urged DC</h2>

Despite having had several top names in the leadership group before, DC ownership seemed impressed by Badani’s CV as a coach. Badani has been a successful coach in the domestic T20 circuit. During his early days in the IPL, Badani was part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) backroom staff before joining Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), winning the title three times with them.

Besides, Badani joined SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) as a fielding coach and scout in IPL 2022.&nbsp;

The former India batter also tried his hand at coaching in the overseas T20 leagues, working as an assistant coach with SunRisers Eastern Cape in 2023, when they won the inaugural SA20 title.&nbsp;

Lately, Badani worked as a coaching consultant for Jaffna Kings in the Lankan Premier League (LPL), helping them win the latest edition.

Meanwhile, DC hasn't announced the list of retentions, with the submission date being October 31.

IPL 2025: Hemang Badani joins Delhi Capitals as new head coach; Venugopal replaces Ganguly as team director

With the IPL 2025 mega auction just around the corner, Delhi Capitals have zeroed in on the players leading the retention race, with Captain Rishabh Pant first on the list. Shortly after Pant hammered his sixth Test hundred against Bangladesh in Chennai – the joint-most by an Indian keeper-batter in Tests, the latest reports began surfacing, claiming the management locked in Pant as the number one pick.

Per Cricbuzz, the Delhi Capitals’ ownership group confirmed that Pant is the first name on the retention list, while all-rounder Axar Patel and ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav are next in line. Though the BCCI has yet to release the revised retention rules, with the announcement expected shortly, this decision came following a constructive meeting between franchise co-owner Parth Jindal and Pant in Mumbai.

Pant’s current IPL salary is $1.91 million (INR 16 crore), which is likely to increase based on the total player purse allowed to a team and the retention fee guidelines set by the apex cricket body in India.

Meanwhile, Pant returned to on-field cricket in IPL this year, having missed the last edition following his horrific car crash. Though ahead of the start of the tournament, Ganguly – DC’s Director of Cricket, claimed that Pant might only play as a batter, the India gloveman attained full fitness and kept wickets throughout the tournament.

In IPL 2024, Pant scored 443 runs in 13 matches, with an impressive strike-rate of 155.&nbsp;

Participating in the T20 World Cup in the Americas, Pant guided his team to their second title. Currently, on his Test return against Bangladesh in Chennai, Pant completed a hundred (109) in the second innings.

<h2>Overseas options for DC</h2>

Going by the general narrative of five retentions allowed to each of the ten franchises, DC are sure of picking the abovementioned three Indian players, with rookie top-order batter Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tristan Stubbs leading the race for the remaining two spots in the overseas players category.

In the case of BCCI allowing provision to retain uncapped players, the Delhi team might retain keeper-batter Abishek Porel.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the BCCI is closing in on finalising the revised retention rules, with a number of retentions and clarity surrounding bringing back the Right to Match (RTM) card being the top highlights.&nbsp;

Delhi, earlier this year, parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting after seven seasons, with the Australian joining Punjab Kings in a similar capacity ahead of IPL 2025.&nbsp;

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel on top of retention list for Delhi Capitals - Reports

Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Punjab Kings (PBKS) have reportedly appointed legendary Australia player Ricky Ponting as their new head coach. Ponting, sacked in July by Delhi Capitals after a seven-year stint, will have a huge task in hand to guide PBKS back into the IPL playoffs. PBKS finished ninth in IPL 2024 and have not reached the playoffs since 2014 when they were runners-up having lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final.

<h2>Ponting set for PBKS role</h2>

According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, Ponting has signed a multi-year deal with PBKS and will have huge decision-making ahead of the mega-auctions that are set to take place at the end of the month. His first job will be to appoint a coaching staff which currently comprises Trevor Bayliss (head coach), Sanjay Bangar (head of cricket development), Charl Langeveldt (fast-bowling coach), and&nbsp;Sunil Joshi (spin-bowling coach).

The second job will be to prepare a strategy for the IPL auctions and retain players for the next season. The likes of Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran and Harshal Patel remain top of the retention list while Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma could also give a good headache to the Aussie.

The IPL auction strategy will also include getting a new captain for the side after Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement.

<h2>New team for Ponting</h2>

Having started his IPL career with Kolkata Knight Riders, Ponting’s first piece of silverware came in 2013 when he won the title with Mumbai Indians. He would then serve in a coaching role at Mumbai before being appointed as the Delhi Capitals head coach in 2017, with him taking over during the IPL 2018 season.

During his stint as DC coach, he helped the franchise reach playoffs from 2019 to 2021. The IPL 2020 season remains the most successful in the franchise’s history having reached the IPL final but lost to Mumbai Indians.

IPL 2025: Punjab Kings appoint Ricky Ponting as new head coach; takes over after Delhi Capitals sacking

Former Australia captain and batting great Ricky Ponting has turned down any possibility of taking over England’s white-ball head coach role. Since Matthew Mott’s departure, the ECB has been actively looking out for a high-profile name to replace him with the single aim of winning ICC titles, and Ponting’s name was one of the options discussed, British media reports&nbsp;suggested. Ponting, however, hasn’t ruled out a potential return to the IPL in the leadership group.

Knowing he has his hands full regarding coaching and other commitments and being transparent about maintaining his work-life balance, Ponting feels he is far from taking up a national team's head coach job.

He, however, sounded hesitant in taking up England’s white-ball coach role, considering the age-old history between the two behemoths of world cricket.&nbsp;

"No, I wouldn't ever consider doing that actually," he said on The ICC Review podcast, as per news agency PTI.&nbsp;

"I'm on record saying that international jobs, for me right now, are not really where my life is at, as there's just so much more time taken up with an international job.

"Coaching other international teams is one thing, and coaching England for an Australian is probably something slightly different, but right now, there's sort of enough on my plate as I've got a bit more coming up in the next couple of months in the UK," Ponting added.

<h2>Ponting wishes to return to IPL</h2>

After parting ways with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, with whom he spent seven years at the head coach position, Ponting is keen on retrying his luck with some other franchise ahead of IPL 2025. At DC, he could guide them to an IPL final only once (in 2020), failing to bring home the silverware during his tenure.

"I'd love to coach again in the IPL. I've had a great time every year that I've been involved, whether that was in the early days as a player or the couple of years I had at Mumbai as head coach there," Ponting said.&nbsp;

He added, "I've had seven seasons at Delhi, which unfortunately didn't really work out the way that I would have wanted and certainly the way that the franchise would have wanted."

"Me going there was all about trying to bring some silverware to the team, and that didn't happen," Ponting noted.

Explaining what happened behind the scenes, Ponting said the DC management was honest about what they want, saying they are looking for an Indian coach who can also remain available beyond the IPL season.

"What you'll find is that they'll probably end up with an Indian-based head coach. Certainly, that's some of the dialogue that I've had with them anyway.

"They made it pretty clear that they wanted to head in a different direction with someone that could give them a bit more time and a bit more availability through the off-season," Ponting added.

Ricky Ponting turns down England white-ball head coach role; hints at IPL return

Former Australia great and Delhi Capitals coach in the IPL, Ricky Ponting, reflected on his time coaching in the cash-rich league. Ponting, who parted ways with Delhi after six years with the franchise, hints at returning to the leadership role with&nbsp;another team in times to come. A close ally of India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant, Ponting admits how he once felt Pant could never play cricket again following his horrific road accident.

Pant suffered multiple fractures and countless injuries in a road accident on New Year's Eve in 2022, ruling him out of competitive cricket for more than a year. Such was his state following the car crash that he had to be pulled out of the vehicle before it caught fire. Per the onlookers, Pant almost lost his life.&nbsp;

Speaking on the same lines, Ponting, who was at DC then, said looking at Pant’s condition, he didn’t believe the India star could pick up a bat again. However, he admits feeling very emotional about watching Pant standing on his feet and returning to the cricket field.&nbsp;

Just ahead of the IPL 2024, the NCA cleared Pant to partake in the 17th edition, although DC Director of Cricket, Sourav Ganguly, said Pant would play as a batter and not keep wickets.&nbsp;

The swashbuckling batter returned in style, scoring over 400 runs for the team and doing relatively okay behind the stumps. Though Pant failed to lead his team to the playoffs, he won his maiden ICC title with India – the T20 World Cup in the Americas last month.&nbsp;

In an exclusive chat with Cricbuzz, Ponting talked about Pant, saying,

“I mean what Rishabh's been through last year is one that's probably the most emotional, with how close I was with him and what he went through and the fear of all of us that he might not play cricket again. Seeing him back and doing what he's doing and leading DC, I think it's a pretty emotional time for everyone,” Ponting said.

<h2>Time to return to IPL</h2>

Shortly after Ponting and Delhi mutually decide to part ways, Ponting is on record saying he does not rule out a potential return to the league, but with some other franchise this time.&nbsp;

Considering IPL’s mega auction is a hot topic nowadays and several franchises seeking coaches and mentors, Ponting is not far from bagging a deal elsewhere.&nbsp;

“So it is what it is, we've decided to part ways, and we decided to move on, but that doesn't mean that I won't be coaching again. I'm very keen to get back involved in the IPL. There might be a few opportunities coming up and we'll see what happens over the next few weeks,” Ponting noted.

He, however, feels grateful for his time at Delhi for the past six seasons, where he failed to lead the team to an IPL trophy even once.

“I had a great time there. DC, for me, was like my second home, and my family was there with me for a month or five weeks in the last three or four years. It hasn't always been the most successful franchise. So, we tried to build a real family-inclusive environment where everyone was treated the same, and everyone was on the same page,” Ponting added.

IPL: Ricky Ponting reflects on his time at Delhi Capitals, hints at returning as coach for another franchise

Delhi Capitals captain and ace keeper-batter Rishabh Pant could join MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings in a trade deal ahead of IPL 2025, per the latest reports. The most capped Delhi player, Pant, could switch bases for the first time since his league debut, as franchise owners are undecided on his retention. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giant captain (LSG) KL Rahul might leave the team and rejoin Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of the upcoming season.

Pant returned to on-field cricket last year for the first time since suffering multiple injuries in a horrific road accident on New Year’s Eve in 2022. After NCA cleared him to take the field, Pant returned to captain Delhi Capitals last year. Following a shallow start to the 17th edition, Pant was among the runs, finishing the tournament with 446 runs in 13 innings, averaging 40.55.

However, despite his valiant efforts as a captain and batter, he failed to guide his team to a playoff finish, as they ended up sixth on the points table, with seven wins and as many losses.&nbsp;

With head coach Ricky Ponting also departing and considering the mega auction will take place ahead of the next season, DC’s decision-makers are contemplating removing Pant from the captaincy and trading with a player at CSK.

And being unclear about MS Dhoni’s participation in the next edition, Pant’s trade to the franchise could be a win-win situation for both the team and the batter.&nbsp;

But, per a report in Dainik Jagran, Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly wishes to stick with Pant as a marquee player in the side going forward.

<h2>Rahul to lead RCB</h2>

KL Rahul has been the mainstay for LSG since the side’s debut in 2022. But after what unfolded last year following the game against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), when owner Sanjeev Goenka publicly lashed out at his team’s captain, the relationship between the two turned sour.

Although Goenka did invite Rahul over dinner at his place to mend things, it seemed to have gone too far by then.

Considering the new season is approaching, Rahul is reportedly returning to RCB and replacing Faf du Plessis as the side’s new captain. With Faf unlikely to get retained or picked at the auction table, given his age,&nbsp;he remains fittest among many. Rahul’s appointment as the new captain could help the owners build a team around him, aiming for the long-eluded IPL trophy.&nbsp;

However, despite his valiant efforts as a captain and batter, he failed to guide his team to a playoff finish, as they ended up sixth on the points table, with seven wins and as many losses. ALSO READ: WATCH: Shamar Joseph breaks roof tiles at Trent Bridge with MONSTER six as West Indies take first innings lead With head coach Ricky Ponting also departing and considering the mega auction will take place ahead of the next season, DC’s decision-makers are contemplating removing Pant from the captaincy and trading with a player at CSK. And being unclear about MS Dhoni’s participation in the next edition, Pant’s trade to the franchise could be a win-win situation for both the team and the batter. But, per a report in Dainik Jagran, Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly wishes to stick with Pant as a marquee player in the side going forward. Rahul to lead RCB KL Rahul has been the mainstay for LSG since the side’s debut in 2022. Considering the new season is approaching, Rahul is reportedly returning to RCB and replacing Faf du Plessis as the side’s new captain. With Faf unlikely to get retained or picked at the auction table, given his age, he remains fittest among many. Rahul’s appointment as the new captain could help the owners build a team around him, aiming for the long-eluded IPL trophy. (With inputs from agencies)

IPL 2025: Delhi Capitals plots Rishabh Pant’s trade to CSK; KL Rahul to leave LSG for ex-franchise - Reports

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals have parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting with immediate effect on Saturday (July 13). Delhi Capitals, who finished sixth and missed out on a top-four finish in the IPL 2024, confirmed the news on Saturday penning an emotional note for the legendary figure. The franchise, however, hasn't announced a replacement for Ponting with the next season still 10 months away.

"As you move on as our head coach, we're finding it incredibly hard to put this down in words," DC said in a post on social media.

"The four things you told us about in every huddle - care, commitment, attitude and effort - they sum up our seven summers together. Seven summers of you being hands-on, but also hands-off, so that we could become better."

“As athletes, yes, but more importantly, as human beings. Seven summers of you reaching every training session first, and leaving last. Seven summers of you sprinting out of the dugout during strategic timeouts, and biting your nails off until there were none left."

Ponting’s departure marks the end of an era for Delhi Capitals who peaked under the Australian coach during the IPL 2020 when they reached the final before losing to Mumbai Indians. Despite being a popular figure in the camp, Ponting could not help DC win the IPL and had an empty trophy cabinet. While nothing is yet clear on the next head coach, DC will have months to contemplate before stepping into the mega auctions.

<h2>DC to have major changes before Mega Auctions</h2>

Before the next season, IPL will have its mega auctions with DC planning a huge overhaul, including the futures of a few players who could be released. The franchise has largely been unsuccessful in reaching the Playoff during Ponting’s reign. However, reports suggest DC will opt to stay with Pravin Amre who will continue to serve the side while Sourav Ganguly will also continue with the franchise.

IPL franchise Delhi Capitals parts ways with head coach Ricky Ponting with mutual consent

Delhi Capitals (DC) hosted Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 64 of the IPL 2024 edition on Tuesday (May 14), at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. Opting to bowl first, KL Rahul-led LSG invited Rishabh Pant's DC to bat first. Pant &amp; Co. rode on Abhishek Porel's 58, Shai Hope's 38 (27), skipper's 23-ball 33 and Tristan Stubbs' 25-ball 57* to post 208 for 4.

In reply, LSG only managed 189 for 9 courtesy of Nicholas Pooran's entertaining 27-ball 61 and Arshad Khan's fighting 58 (33). With this defeat, LSG are very much out of contention in the playoffs race whereas DC remain alive but with a very slim chance mathematically. After the loss, Mohammed Kaif lashed out at Lucknow for their poor tactics, inviting DC to bat first at the venue.

Kaif told on Star Sports, "Take the video analyst's computer and throw it away. They didn't go with any numbers. 200 has not been chased here at all. I am telling you this year's numbers. In all four matches, the team batting first has won. You won the toss and said you would field first."

The former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator further added, "The biggest mistake was the decision at the toss... So, there will be a question mark on the bowling as well. Lucknow had everything to gain from this match... I believe it was an absolute flop show from Lucknow."

In IPL history, DC have never lost while defending anything over 200. Meanwhile, no team has managed to chase down any total in excess of 200 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in this year's IPL. Hence, LSG team management certainly made a big mistake, pushing them closer to an early exit.

At present, DC are at the fifth spot with 14 points in their league games. Meanwhile, LSG are two&nbsp;spots below DC, with 12 points and a game in hand.

Delhi Capitals (DC) director of cricket Sourav Ganguly has labelled Rishabh Pant as an 'instinctive captain' after DC ended their league games with a 19-run win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 64 of IPL 2024 on Tuesday (May 14). Under Pant, DC ended their league games with 7 wins and equal number of losses. They have a very slim chance, mathematically, of qualifying for the playoffs.

Reflecting on Pant's captaincy -- who has impressed at times but also made mistakes from time to time this season -- Ganguly told Jio Cinema, "Pant is a young captain, he'll learn with time. The way he returned from injury to play a full season; we had our doubts during the off-season."

"Indian players are crucial, especially since the TATA IPL shifted to 10 teams. I am very happy for him that he returned to play so well over a full season. He has all my well-wishes for whatever is next," Ganguly&nbsp;opined.

He further opined, "With time, he'll become a better captain. Nobody is a great captain from day one, but he is an instinctual captain, he makes decisions on the ground. With more time, he'll get better."

Pant returned to competitive cricket after 1.5 years during this IPL season. In 14 games, he ended with 446 runs -- ninth-most -- at a strike-rate of 155.40 along with three fifties. As a result, he got selected in India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad.&nbsp;

DC had a topsy-turvy ride in the league stage but saw plenty of new match-winners emerge such as Jack Fraser-McGurk, Abhishek Porel, Rasikh Dar Salam, Triston Stubbs, Mukesh Kumar, etc.

On pacer Rasikh, former Indian skipper Ganguly said, "You've seen Rasikh's development over time. The more matches he played, the better he got. It's not easy to bowl on the Delhi wicket. This wicket is great, and the ground isn't that big, so I think for any bowler, it isn't easy to bowl here. Rasikh has improved a lot. Mukesh has been our best bowler this season. He bowls all the difficult overs, whether at the start or at the death. There has been no match this season where we didn't need his bowling in the death. "

He added, "We knew that conceding sixes would lead to more losses, so he has consistently delivered there. Our Indian bowlers have been great this season."
