The women's cricket final between India and Australia at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Sunday was marred with controversy after Tahlia McGrath was allowed to play for the Aussies despite testing positive for COVID-19 ahead of the game. McGrath returned a positive test and had mild symptoms but was allowed to take the field in the gold medal match after the approval of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Due to the conundrum over her participation, the toss between India and Australia was delayed for 12 minutes at Edgbaston. Had the tournament been in Australia, McGrath wouldn't have featured but she was allowed to play the game as the rules regarding COVID-19 at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham are relaxing.

Nonetheless, questions were raised as McGrath was spotted sitting with a mask on in the dugout during Australia's innings at Edgbaston. She was seen isolated from the rest of the squad. However, McGrath took the mask off later when she came out to bat and later while fielding for her team.

Amid controversy over her appearance in the game despite having tested positive for COVID-19, Australian fast bowler Megan Schutt said the Aussie payers were happy to play with McGrath and didn't care about contracting COVID-19.

"We were all happy to play, she was happy to play. She feels absolutely fine so I think the positive result was a bit of a shock to her, but that’s Covid isn’t it, we’re all going to live through it," Schutt was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

McGrath scored 2 runs and bowled two overs conceding 24 runs during India's innings. She also took the catch of Indian opener Shafali Verma and was spotted asking her teammates to stay away when they ran towards her to celebrate the dismissal.

"We didn’t want to get in trouble, we felt bad for Tahlia at the end there. Obviously, when you’re part of a game that’s so thrilling like that, that’s all you want to do (is celebrate) and at the end screw it, if we get Covid, so be it," said Schutt.

While she batted and fielded without a mask, McGrath was spotted wearing a mask while receiving her medal after Australia won the final by 9 runs. Australia successfully managed to defend the total of 161 runs as they bundled out India for 152 with three balls to spare to win their maiden gold medal in women's cricket at the Commonwealth Games.

India gained the tempo as the match progressed and built their attacks using both the flanks. But it was New Zealand who came close to taking the lead in the first quarter, in the form of a penalty corner which was well defended by the Indians.

Minutes later, Sangita Kumari's shot on target was blocked by the Kiwi defence. Seconds later, Salima's shot zoomed across the right side of New Zealand goal.

India kept up the pressure after the change of ends, and in the 35th minute, secured their first variation, but the chance was wasted. Minutes later, excellent work by Navneet and Neha Goyal set it up for Sonika, who just had to get her stick on the ball, but failed.

Merry seemed to have equalised for New Zealand in the 43rd minute against the run of play, but the goal was disallowed after India went for the referral, claiming that the free hit wasn't taken from the 5m line.

India got three penalty corners in succession in the 52nd minute but Gurjit Kaur failed to get past New Zealand custodian Grace O'Hanlon.

The Indians lived dangerously in the fag end of the match and with two-and-half minutes remaining, Lalremisiami got an unnecessary yellow card, reducing her side to 10 players.

The Kiwis took advantage of that and secured a penalty corner with seconds from the hooter, which resulted in a penalty stroke, as Navneet deliberately kicked the goal-bound ball. Merry stepped up and foxed Savita to draw level and take the match into a shoot-out.

CWG 2022: Indian wrestler Ravi Dahiya defeats Nigeria's Ebikewenimo Welson to clinch gold

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat won the gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the women`s 53kg event and completed the hat-trick of top podium finishes, here on Saturday.

The 27-year-old Vinesh entered Birmingham 2022 as a two-time champion and ensured her third straight CWG gold after going undefeated. She had won the 48kg gold at Glasgow 2014 and the 50kg division at Gold Coast 2018.

With only four wrestlers in the women's 53kg division at Birmingham, the medals were decided through a single-phase Nordic Group system, in which all the wrestlers faced each other once. The group topper after the sequence of matches won the gold while the second and third-placed grapplers took silver and bronze, respectively.

World championships 2021 bronze medallist Samantha Stewart, Nigeria`s Mercy Bolafunoluwa Adekuoroye and Sri Lanka`s Chamodya Keshani Maduravalage Don were the other wrestlers competing in the division.

Mercy is the younger sister of three-time Commonwealth Games champion Odunayo Adekuoroye, who beat Vinesh's compatriot Anshu Malik on Friday to pocket the women's 57kg gold.

Indian boxer Amit Panghal (51kg) displayed his class as he reached his second consecutive Commonwealth Games final while Nitu Ghanghas (48kg) also remained on course for a gold in her maiden appearance here on Saturday.

Panghal, who is vying to win the yellow metal after his silver in the last edition, came from behind to beat an aggressive Patrick Chinyemba of Zambia with a 5-0 unanimous decision win.

Nitu, on the other hand, prevailed over Canada's Priyanka Dhillon as she notched a RSC (Referee Stops Contest) win in the minimum weight category.

Such was the 21-year-old Nitu's confidence that she played with an open guard, inviting her opponent to strike while using her straight jabs and combination punches to great effect. In the end, the referee had to end the contest.

Both the boxers will have to overcome local challengers in Kiaran Macdonald (men's fly) and Demie-Jade Resztan (women's minimum) in their respective finals on Sunday in pursuit of their maiden gold medals.

"I know it would be tough, there would be loud cheers for him but I've to stay focused. Can't let it go this time," a determined Panghal, who lost to another Briton and Tokyo Olympics champion in Galal Yafai in 2018, told PTI.

Panghal, 26, was left on the back foot as his younger, more aggressive opponent landed a barrage of punches on the world championship silver medallist.

Trailing 2-3 after the opening round, Panghal, who looked to put behind the ghost of the Tokyo Olympics where he made a first round exit, had to dig deep in his reservoir of experience. The Asian Games champion upped the ante, landing hooks and jabs at will to take the round.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Saturday apologised for the clock controversy that took place during the Indian women's team's semifinal loss against Australia at the Commonwealth Games, saying it would "thoroughly review" the incident.

Australia's Rosie Malone, who missed her first attempt during the penalty shootout, was gifted another chance as the eight second countdown on the scoreboard hadn't started. The forward did not miss the second time, putting her side in the lead.

The Indians eventually lost the semifinal 0-3 in the shootout after both teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time as the crowd booed the technical officials for the decision.

CWG 2022: FIH apologises for clock howler during Indian women's semifinal loss, will review incident

Bajrang Punia claimed his second straight Commonwealth Games gold medal at the ongoing Games in Birmingham on Friday (August 06) after defeating Lachlan McNeil of Canada 9-2 in the final of the men's freestyle 65kg category. It was a comfortable victory for the star Indian wrestler, who is on his way to becoming one of the country's most successful wrestlers.

Punia was always a favourite to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games this year as he has been in terrific form on the mat over the last few years. He lived up to his favourite tag in the final on Sunday and successfully defended his title to bag his second straight gold medal at the Games.

However, the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist played down the suggestions that it was an easy contest for him to dominate. Punia said nothing comes easy in life and that he never considers his opponent weak ahead of any match and wants to give his best.

"Nothing comes easy in life. You have to work hard for everything. I don’t come here thinking that my opponent is weak. In whatever contest I am in, I want to give my best performance," Punia was quoted as saying by India Today after his win over McNeil in the final on Friday.

Punia had suffered a knee injury during the Tokyo Olympics last year where he had to settle with a bronze medal. The Indian wrestler said he was looking to bounce back strongly at the Commonwealth Games this year and has been slowly regaining momentum after recovering from the injury.

"After the injury (knee injury at Tokyo Olympics and another one after it), I was searching for my best performance. I was working hard for it. I was not able to get things right in a couple of tournaments before. I have a feeling that I am getting back to my best and the hard work is paying off," Punia said.

Commonwealth Games 2022: India's wrestling team in action today led by Bajrang Punia

Indian contingent continues to inspire in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 edition, being held in Birmingham, England. On Day 8, India's medal hopes were pinned on the wrestling squad -- comprising some big names such as Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia, Sakshi Malik, etc.

Well, the majority of them have not disappointed as both Bajrang and Deepak have stormed into the final of their respective categories. Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Bajrang registered an easy win by 'victory by fall' in his opening clash to proceed ahead and didn't break a sweat to reach the final courtesy of a big win over England's George Ramm of England via technical superiority (without any point achieved by his opponent).

Deepak also followed suit and joined Bajrang in the final after the World Championships silver medalist win in the men's 86kg category. Meanwhile, the women wrestlers also continued to shine and give plenty to cheer for the Indian fans back home with their performances. The likes of Sakshi Malik (62kg) and Anshu Malik (57kg) entered the summit clash whereas Divya Kakran (in 68kg) won her repechage bout and will now compete for bronze. In men's, the 22-year-old Mohit Grewal also conceded his match in the 125kg category semi-final. Thus, he will now shift focus to compete for a third-spot finish.

Among others, the likes of PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth have also moved into the quarter-finals in the badminton singles category, after the mixed team fetched silver early this week. Thus, a lot more medals are in store for Team India in the remaining days of CWG 2022.

Indian athletes continue to win hearts with their glittering performances at the CWG 2022 edition, being held in Birmingham. Murali Sreeshankar, on Thursday (August 04), scripted history after clinching the silver medal in the men's long jump event in Birmingham 2022. The 23-year-old Sreeshankar, thus, has now became the first-ever Indian to claim a silver medal in the men's long jump event at the Games.

The youngster produced a sensational performance in his event with a jump of 8.08 metres in his fifth attempt and secured the second spot, behind Bahamas' Laquan Nairn. It is to be noted that Nairn also had the best jump of 8.08 metres. However, he edged past Sreeshankar by a whisker as his second best attempt was of 7.98 metres, compared to the Indian counterpart's 7.84 metres. Thus, there wasn't much to separate between the two.

For the unversed, the rules state that if two jumpers are tied on the same distance, the one with a better second-best effort will go past the other to claim the first spot. On the other hand, another talented Indian long jumper Mohammed Anees Yahiya had also qualified for the finals. He, however, finished at the fifth position courtesy of a best jump of 7.97 metres.

Before Sreeshankar's heroics in the ongoing CWG, India's Suresh Babu had settled for bronze in the 1978 edition of the games. Talking about the women's long jumpers from the country, Prajusha Maliakkal fetched silver in the 2010 edition in Delhi whereas legendary athlete Anju Bobby George earned a bronze medal 20 years back.
