Indian skipper Virat Kohli turned 33 on Friday (November 5), on the same day he led his side to win a crucial ICC Men's T20 World Cup contest against Scotland. Virat had his 'birthday luck' on his side as he won the toss and opted to bowl first, which helped the team massively.

Indian bowlers bundled out Scotland for 85 in 17.4 overs. The batters then entered the field with all guns blazing as they reached the set target in 6.3 overs. In order to redress their net run rate (NRR) and have any chance to make it to the semi-final of the tournament, India needed to register big wins after losing their first two matches Pakistan and New Zealand. And they managed to do so as they defeated Afghanistan by 66 runs and Scotland by eight wickets in the Super 12 matches. The win against Scotland was more or less a birthday present for the Indian skipper by the teammates as India are still, somehow, in the contention of reaching the semi-finals. The hopeful Indian team celebrated Virat's birthday after the Scotland win. The official handle of the Indian cricket board BCCI posted a small video, where Virat can be seen cutting the cake and teammates, other members of staff clapping and wishing for him. India batter Suryakumar Yadav shared a story on Instagram in which the players can be seen smearing cake on Kohli's face.
After an outstanding all-around performance, India defeated Scotland by eight wickets in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup on Friday (November 5) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.

After winning the toss, Indian skipper Virat Kohli opted to bowl first. Indian bowlers bundled out Scotland for 85 in 17.4 overs. The batters then entered the field with all guns blazing as they reached the set target in 6.3 overs for their second win in four matches.

Openers were in top form as Rohit Sharma scored a quick 30 off 16 balls and KL Rahul blasted an 18-ball fifty to give India a much-needed win with an improved net run rate.

The semi-final conundrum

If you are a cricket fan and follow the Indian team closely, then you must have thought about how Virat Kohli & Co. can still qualify for the semi-final of the T20 World Cup? Well, for some, it has become even trickier than the Shakuntala Devi puzzles. But nothing to worry about, here are all the possible permutations for India to book a semi-final berth.

Emitting a perfect World Cup vibe, the scenario in the Group 2 is pretty interesting as three strong contenders — India, New Zealand and Afghanistan are fighting for a place in the semi-final after Pakistan already reached the last four.

IN PICS | Happy Birthday Virat Kohli: Top five records owned by the Indian captain

India's big win against Scotland has left the Men In Blue hopeful of making it to the semis, however, they will have to win their remaining game of the Super 12 stage with an improved net run rate, to have any chance of making the semi-finals after New Zealand defeated Namibia earlier in the day. But even a win won't give a semi-final berth.

Group 2 situation. How can India qualify for the semi-final?

Pakistan (NRR +1.065) are already through, however, they will next face Scotland on November 7 and will look forward to finishing top of the table.

New Zealand (NRR +1.277) are just one win away from reaching the semis as if New Zealand beat Afghanistan on November 7, they will be guaranteed a spot in the next stage. In case they lose the match, then the net run rate will decide the fate of Group 2 because then NZ will be level on points with Afghanistan.

Afghanistan (NRR +1.481) team's run rate was rattled after a heavy loss against India and if they defeat New Zealand in the upcoming match and manage to finish with a superior NRR to India, then they will win the semi-final race.

IN PICS | Happy Birthday Virat Kohli: Top five records owned by the Indian captain India's big win against Scotland has left the Men In Blue hopeful of making it to the semis, however, they will have to win their remaining game of the Super 12 stage with an improved net run rate, to have any chance of making the semi-finals after New Zealand defeated Namibia earlier in the day. T20 World Cup: Virat Kohli-led Team India crush Scotland by eight wickets to keep semi-final hopes alive

A clinical bowling attack then carried forward the momentum by taking wickets at regular intervals as India needed to redress their net run rate to keep their hopes of making it to the semi-final in the ongoing tournament alive.

Captain of the Indian cricket team Virat Kohli reacted to the return of spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the Playing XI after the Men In Blue registered a crucial 66-run win against Afghanistan in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup. In a much-win contest for both the teams, India emerged victorious after the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul laid the foundation as India posted a mammoth 210 for a loss of two wickets at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday (November 3). A clinical bowling attack then carried forward the momentum by taking wickets at regular intervals as India needed to redress their net run rate to keep their hopes of making it to the semi-final in the ongoing tournament alive. ALSO READ | Rahul Dravid appointed as Team India's head coach, set to take over from New Zealand home series With the help of a disciplined attack, bowlers kept the game in their control with India's new-ball bowlers Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah taking out the Afghanistan openers early in the innings. Ashwin returned figures of 2-14 in his first white-ball international since 2017. Afghanistan could score 144-7 in reply. During the post-match presentation, Kohli said, "The return of Ash (is the biggest positive), we saw him doing well in the IPL and when he does this, we get control in the middle overs. That's what I'm most pleased about (today)." Ashwin, who came in to the XI in place of Varun Chakravarthy, got down to business as he trapped Gulbadin Naib lbw for 18 and bowled Najibullah Zadran to put Afghanistan in trouble at 69-5. Ashwin was returned to India's XI after 1,578 days — previous to this, he played a T20I match for India was against West Indies at Kingston on July 09, 2017. During pacer Mohammed Shami's last over of the match, Afghanistan's Karim Janat tried to hit big, but didn't connect it properly as the ball went high. It was Jadeja who sprinted and made a superhuman-like dive to take almost the catch of the tournament but it was given "not out" after on-field umpires referred it to the third umpire. The issue was whether the ball has touched the turf. Jadeja, who didn't look happy, and skipper Virat Kohli's reaction went viral as it appeared that both the players couldn't believe that it was "not out".
As the Virat Kohli & Co. prepares to face New Zealand in a very crucial contest on Sunday (October 31) in the ongoing T20 World Cup, they have been warned by the opponent's pace spearhead Trent Boult. The bowler is plotting to replicate something similar to what Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi did to wreck India's top-order during the Indo-Pak match that India lost by 10 wickets.

Boult has said he has seen how Shaheen swung the ball as he told the reporters on Sunday (October 30) that the way Shaheen bowled was "amazing" and he can mirror that.

During the presser, Boult also said, "There's quality batsmen in that Indian lineup and early wickets are definitely the focus for us as a bowling group. Hopefully, from my point of view, it swings around a little bit and I can mirror what Shaheen did the other night."

In the India vs Pakistan match, Afridi dismissed Rohit Sharma for a golden duck with a searing, swinging delivery and, in his next over, bowled the other opener, KL Rahul, to set up Pakistan's victory in the Group II blockbuster in Dubai.

New Zealand are also smarting from their defeat by Pakistan and need a win against Kohli's "Men in Blue" to revive their campaign. Talking about the match, Boult said, "There's always a lot of excitement that comes with playing India."

"We've probably enjoyed some success over the last few years in these ICC tournaments but it definitely doesn't mean that we're going to treat them lightly or anything like that. ALSO READ | T20 World Cup: Virat Kohli slams 'spineless people' for abusing Shami, calls it 'lowest level of human form' During the presser, Boult also said, "There's quality batsmen in that Indian lineup and early wickets are definitely the focus for us as a bowling group. Hopefully, from my point of view, it swings around a little bit and I can mirror what Shaheen did the other night." In the India vs Pakistan match, Afridi dismissed Rohit Sharma for a golden duck with a searing, swinging delivery and, in his next over, bowled the other opener, KL Rahul, to set up Pakistan's victory in the Group II blockbuster in Dubai. Talking about the match, Boult said, "There's always a lot of excitement that comes with playing India." "We've probably enjoyed some success over the last few years in these ICC tournaments but it definitely doesn't mean that we're going to treat them lightly or anything like that. It's a big game for both teams. I'm sure both are looking forward to putting on a good show," added the 32-year-old.

T20 World Cup: Virat Kohli slams 'spineless people' for abusing Shami, calls it 'lowest level of human form'

The Virat Kohli-led India didn't get a start they had hoped for in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup as in their first match of the tournament's Super 12 stage, they suffered a heavy 10-wicket defeat against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday (October 24).

During the match, India were asked to bat first after losing the toss and the Virat's side was off to the worst possible start when Pak's left-arm quick Shaheen Shah Afridi (3-31) thrashed the Indian batting order. Pakistan's bowling department was outstanding as they kept India to 151-7 despite a valiant 57 from Kohli.

In reply to that, Pakistan chased down the target with 13 balls to spare thanks to their opening pair Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan's half-centuries. Pakistan registered their first-ever win over arch-rivals at a Twenty20 World Cup.

During the post-match presentation, Kohli weighed in on the embarrassing loss, as he said that the team "didn't execute properly". He further added, "Credit where it's due and Pakistan outplayed us today. They started brilliantly with the ball, and 3 wickets for 20 runs was not a good start."

T20 WC: Ajay Jadeja 'disappointed' with Kohli's remarks post Pakistan clash, says 'It shows India's approach'

After India lost their T20 World Cup opener against Pakistan on Sunday (October 24), India's star pacer Mohammad Shami was subjected to a fierce online attack. It was Men in Blue's first-ever loss to Pakistan in World Cup history.

However, from legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to Virender Sehwag to Yuzvendra Chahal, past and present Indian cricketers condemned the targetting of Shami's religious identity by social media trolls.

Now, some media reports have highlighted that the troll and online abuses were created and circulated in Pakistan, and they started trending on social media forums instantly. And after probing it, one can find that the majority of tweets were posted by Pakistani handlers.

The question here is, was it orchestrated in Pakistan by a group of people to malign India's image? After it started trending in India - from politicians to cricketers, people in India were condemning the trolls, showing their support to Shami, but did they fall for the trap which appears to be meant to weaken the spirit of sports.

In war and in peace, passion for cricket alive and well in Afghanistan

On the cricket field, India and Pakistan are arch-rivals, but players from both sides have a strong bond off the field, as evidenced by the Men in Green's 10-wicket victory against Virat Kohli's team at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on October 24.

During an exclusive chat with WION's Digvijay Singh Deo, the two-time World Cup-winning coach John Buchanan opened up on India vs Pakistan clash. He said, "It's going to hurt, that's for sure. It's hammering. That's just a real comprehensive loss against a fantastic Pakistan."

"However, your first game in the tournament is always a little bit tricky. You are just not quite settled as a team, you are just not sure about a range of things. It's always nice to get the first game underway and ideally get away with a win but in this case, India haven't"

"I don't think there will be of long-term concern for India, I think it reflects on a range of this 'can I change the bowling line-up' also the batting. But I think there won't be too many changes on India's side. One of these games tends to reflect relatively quickly and just go back to what you were doing in the lead-up and in individual performance and prepare for the next game".
