MS Dhoni donates to help 100 poor families in Pune during COVID-19 pandemic

The all-powerful ICC Board on Friday discussed various contingency plans for its flagship tournaments, including World T20 and World Test Championship in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic that has brought cricket to a standstill. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was India’s representative when it was being speculated that a former Board president would attend the meeting, held via video conference.

The sporting world has been under complete lockdown and several bilateral Test series under World Test Championship also run the risk of being cancelled. “The impact of the pandemic on the sport globally was discussed,” an ICC release stated.

ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said, “We continue to undertake a comprehensive business continuity and contingency planning exercise which will allow us to adapt to the rapidly evolving world in which we find ourselves.” While no decisions were taken as any shifting of tournament or change of dates involves gigantic logistical exercise which needs meticulous planning at every stage.

“The ICC management will continue our contingency planning around ICC events and will also work with Members to explore all options available to us based on a range of scenarios connected to the pandemic.” When a Board member was asked what happens if England, which is due to host Pakistan and West Indies at home is unable to do so, he said the matter of points allocation will be referred to the technical committee.

“It can’t happen unless an amicable solution is reached. You might have India playing six series and perched at top and England get to play three due to lockdown and tight FTP schedule. You need a solution to distribution of points and matter should be referred to the technical committee,” a representative of a member told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

A couple of Board members felt that World T20 in Australia is not under threat as October is still some time away. “If things are under control from June, we can then work on a specific contingency plan. Right now, ICC would be working on various plans and would come up with their proposals in course of time,” the senior official said.

The Board also approved th audited financial statements for 2019 and the final accounts for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019. The local organizing committee of Women’s World T20 was thanked for conducting a successful tournament.

"Hello, I am Virat Kohli. Today I am speaking to you not as an India player, but as a citizen of the country. But this fight is not as easy as it looks or feels," Kohli said in the video.

WATCH: 'Wake up & take responsibility' - Virat Kohli appeals Indian citizens to stay at home amid COVID-19 lockdown

While India continues to fight against the deadly COVID-19 amid a nationwide lockdown, sportspersons have come forward in a bid to keep motivating everyone during tough times. Former World Cup-winning Indian captain, Kapil Dev has shared a heartfelt message for everyone as he urged the citizen to stay at home and help the authorities to fight against the deadly novel coronavirus.&nbsp;

Dev further motivated everyone by saying that there’s an entire world inside your home as a person can spend time by reading books, watching TV and listening to music while adding the best way to enjoy is by interacting with family members.&nbsp;

“You are supposed to stay at home. So, stay at home. It is the least one can do to help the competent and relevant authorities to fight this life-threatening virus,” Dev told a leading daily.

He further said: “It can be taken in a positive way. Lockdown or Stay at Home. You have to challenge yourself to accept this situation. You have the world inside your home - your family. You have means of entertaining yourself - books, TV, music. Best is the interaction you have with your family members.”

Explaining how he is spending his time during the 21-day lockdown period, Dev said that he is contributing in keeping his house clean and spending time with his family, something he missed in the last years.&nbsp;

“I sweep the house, clean the garden. My little garden is now my golf course also. I am getting to spend so much time with my family. Something that I had missed in the last so many years,” he said

“I give the cook a break and cook for everyone. I take turns to do the dishes. I had learnt all this while playing in England when Romi (his wife) would join me.”&nbsp;

An inspiring captain during his playing days and even more inspiring now, Dev further said that India’s strength lies in its culture while adding the nation will win this battle by staying together and helping everyone by staying indoors.&nbsp;

“I always believe in being positive. In cricket you get out for zero after scoring a century in the preceding innings. You end up wicketless after having done your best in the previous spells.”

“I have read and heard how the human race has fought and set examples when dealing with a crisis. India’s strength lies in our culture - looking after each other and caring for elders. Dhoni on Thursday donated a sum of Rs 1 lakh to the Mukul Madhav Foundation via a crowdfunding website Ketto in Pune which will support 100 families for 14 days as India continues to remain in lockdown in a bid to fight against the deadly COVID-19. While some sportspersons have come forward and donated their bit in this time of crisis, Twitteratis&nbsp;were left completely baffled and angered to see Dhoni donating just Rs 1 lakh.

Fans and social media users raised their voice on micro-blogging platform Twitter to slam Dhoni as many stated that with a worth of around Rs 800 crore, Dhoni could have or rather should have donated more.

'Rs 1 lakh only?' - Twitteratis lash out at MS Dhoni for his donation to Pune-based NGO amid COVID-19 pandemic

BCCI should not "wait forever" to start the women's IPL, said India women's ODI captain Mithali Raj, urging the board to make it happen next year on a smaller scale before gradually developing it.

"I personally feel they should start a women's IPL by next year, even if it's on a slightly smaller scale and with some changes in rules, such as, say, have five to six foreign players in the first edition instead of four as is the case with the men's IPL," Raj told 'ESPNCricinfo'

After India lost the T20 World Cup in the finals earlier this month, former skipper Sunil Gavaskar had called for a full-fledged women's IPL from next year to unearth talent.

In 2019, a three-team women's tournament was held featuring sides called IPL Velocity, IPL Trailblazers and IPL Supernovas.

This year, the BCCI had decided to organise a four-team women's T20 challenge to run parallel to the men's IPL playoffs, but now it has been put on hold along with the main event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

India don't have enough women cricketers for a full-fledged IPL but Raj said it can still be conducted if existing IPL franchises own teams to begin the process.

"I agree we don't have the depth in the domestic pool yet, but the key is to get the existing franchises to form teams, even if (only) five or six of them are keen to begin the process because in any case, the BCCI was going to have four teams," she said.

"You cannot wait forever; you have to begin at some point, and gradually, year by year, you can keep evolving the league and then bring it down to four foreign players."

Raj also said that teen sensation Shafali Verma, who impressed with the bat in the T20 World Cup, should be included in the ODIs too.
"It's not a bad idea to consider her for the ODIs. She is young but that should not be a criterion for not giving her opportunities in the ODI side," she said.

The ICC Board members are set to meet via video conference on Friday in a bid to discuss plans for its numerous tournaments in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The COVID-19 outbreak has not only left the entire sporting calendar shattered but has also brought almost the entire world to a standstill.&nbsp;

While a PTI reports states that a couple of ICC Board members have confirmed that no concrete decisions are expected on Friday, the meeting is important to discuss the contingency plans amid the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

ICC’s biggest tournament in the year 2020 is the Men’s T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be held in October-November in Australia. Apart from the T20 World Cup, the points system of ICC World Test Championship will also be on the agenda as several bilateral series has already been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Right now, the situation is such that no decision can be taken as no one knows when normalcy returns. Obviously the members will give a lowdown of the situation in their respective countries.

"But we need to be ready with plans if this lockdown continues for two more months. The complete FTP will be topsy turvy," an official of a member nation told PTI.

The England versus Sri Lanka Test series was postponed amid the COVID-19 outbreak and the official said that points allocation of Test Championship matches will be discussed in case of cancelled series.

"The England versus Sri Lanka series got postponed but where will it be slotted considering the FTP calendar is choc-a-bloc. It's not one series that will be affected but a few more which are lined up," he said.

Moreover, under the ICC World Test Champions, England are scheduled to host West Indies and Pakistan in June and July whereas New Zealand will head to Bangladesh in August. India’s next Test series is against Australia in November and in case all the series gets cancelled then how will the ICC distribute the points? What happens to the FTP?

"So like what could be the ideal points distribution system. Whether giving 60 points each to both teams will be a fair deal is something that members need to discuss," he added.

All the major sporting tournaments and sporting events have been cancelled or postponed, including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. While all eyes are on the future Indian Premier League (IPL) and ICC T20 World Cup 2020, another major cricketing event that has been hit by the novel coronavirus is the ICC World Test Championship.&nbsp;

Unlike other tournaments, the ICC World Test Championship is to be played in two years with every Test-playing nation playing home and away series as per the schedule. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has left everything shattered. Meanwhile, there have been doubts over the Asia Cup 2020, which is scheduled to be held in Pakistan – as of now – in the month of September. While it is impossible for India to participate in the event given it is being held in Pakistan, an ACC meeting was scheduled to decide a neutral venue for the event.

The debate surrounding who is the better all-rounder between Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya and Englishman Ben Stokes has always been stiff. With mixed opinions, the cricket fraternity has always been left divided when it comes to picking the better all-rounder between Hardik and Stokes. While Stokes has won matches for England single-handedly, Hardik, in the last year or so, has emerged as one of the biggest threats with both bat and ball when it comes to white-ball cricket.&nbsp;

To which Hogg replied: “I have to go with the Englishman on this one. Hardik has huge potential, but hasn't played enough international cricket to challenge Stokes as the all-rounder of my World XI."

With the novel coronavirus spreading like wildfire, the sporting calendar has been put to an unusual halt. Major tournaments and leagues have been either cancelled or postponed owning the grave conditions due to the COVID-19. As Indian cricketers continue to spend their time, away from the game, at their respective houses, their fitness is crucial given that they have to step in whenever the sporting events resume. Team India’s strength and conditioning coach Nick Webb, in consultation with physio Nitin Patel, has created customised training routines for Virat Kohli and Co in a bid to keep them in top shape despite the break.

All the players have been handed with fitness routines which they will follow during this break while providing regular updates to Webb and Patel. The routine has been created keeping the demands of the players in mind.

“All the players, irrespective of whether they play red-ball cricket or white-ball cricket or all formats have been given fitness routines which they are to follow and give updates to Webb and Patel from time to time. The routines have been created keeping in mind the demands of the players. So, for example, a bowler has been given exercises which work to make his core and lower body strong. Similarly, a batsman has been given exercises which also work on his shoulders and wrists,” a source was quoted as saying by a news agency.

“So, for example, someone like a Kohli loves to train with weights as well. So, his routine would have weights involved like the clean and jerk and deadlifts and other exercises. While another player might be more comfortable doing free-hand exercises, so in that case, he has been given more free weight functional training options,” the source added.

Like all others, the veteran spinner is with his family (wife Geeta and daughter Hinaya) in Mumbai, hoping that scientists and doctors would make a breakthrough to tackle pandemic that has claimed more than 20,000 lives.

"You see life from a completely different perspective in these times of crisis. Sport is farthest from your mind at this point in time. Now that I am home, I am spending most of my time reading anything and everything about COVID-19," Harbhajan told PTI on Wednesday.

So what exactly does he read? "I try to read every authentic piece of information available. All updates provided by the government about the current situation. And yes, most importantly, I try to read and find out what kind of breakthrough scientists, biologists and doctors are making.

"You need to keep your spirits up and be self-motivated in these trying times. Any positive information lifts your spirits," the 39-year-old said.

Harbhajan was in Chennai at the CSK pre-season camp when the IPL got postponed. While this is a forced break from his busy schedule, which also includes commentary, he is getting to spend some precious time with his wife and daughter.

"Me and my wife do yoga together in the morning. We are now taking time out to play scrabble and darts in the evening. At times, we watch a movie together," he said.

The best part is spending time with his three-year-old daughter, playing with her.

"The break has given me an opportunity to spend quality time with Hinaya. It's really joyful when I get to play with her. It lifts my spirit. Right now all I want is everybody to be safe," he added.

There has been a lot of talks around the form and future of Rishabh Pant. While the southpaw has been backed by the Indian team management and most of the experts to be the face of Indian cricket for a long time, there are others who have asked Pant to be dropped from the Indian team given his inconsistency with the willow and gloves. Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg has opined that Pant has got “too much talent to know what to do with” while adding the youngster will be better with a coach who will see him through his troubles.

"Definitely, I turn on my television when Rishabh Pant comes to the crease, the entertainer," said Hogg.

"His issue is he has got too much talent to know what to do with. He could do with a mind coach, a lot of great sportsmen use them. It is all in the mind for him," Hogg added.

Hogg’s take on Pant came during an interactive session with fans on Twitter on Wednesday where the chinaman bowler was asked whether the Indian wicket-keeper can become one of the best wicket-keepers in the world.

Pant’s inconsistent run of form has seen him lose the gloves and place to the in-form KL Rahul in white-ball cricket. While he was preferred over Wriddhiman Saha in the Test series against New Zealand, Pant returned with scores of 19, 25, 12 and 4.

Earlier, former Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist had urged Pant to not follow what Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been doing and make an identity for himself.

After the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was postponed by a year, all eyes have shifted to the much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. The onus lies on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to deal with the situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and take a final call on the cash-rich tournament which was earlier scheduled to start from March 29 but was suspended until April 15 due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.&nbsp;

However, the IPL franchises and stakeholders aren’t even discussing the IPL 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are not even discussing IPL right now. It will be premature to say anything but hosting the IPL this year looks a bit difficult,” a top franchise official told a leading daily.

While the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly looked pessimistic about conducting IPL 2020 later in the year due to the FTP being in place. A Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) official has now said that all IPL related work was stopped in mid-march as the employees were forced to go on a work-from-home routine due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.&nbsp;

“All IPL related work was stopped in mid-March. Only the construction of VIP boxes was underway when this coronavirus pandemic forced us to go on a work-from-home. We were already told not to hold IPL-related work till April 15,” said a Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) official privy to the development.

Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia was the first to announce a ban on IPL and that meant all IPL-related work at the Arun Jaitley Stadium – home ground of Delhi Capitals – including pitch preparation was halted mid-way.&nbsp;

“The IMGR (Delhi Capitals) guys came here last week and they were told about the developments. Even they looked less hopeful of the IPL taking place this year. Generally, it takes about two weeks for the pitch and construction work to complete before every IPL that means till the end of April it is highly unlikely,” the official added.

The fate of IPL 2020 hangs by thin thread with no preparations and talks

With the novel coronavirus taking the entire world under its dreaded wings, the sporting calendar has been left completely shattered with a number of high-profile tournaments and events getting cancelled or postponed due to COVID19 pandemic. While tournaments like IPL has been already suspended until April 15 and a final call is expected soon, dark clouds are hovering over major events like the Olympics and ICC T20 World Cup.&nbsp;

As the dreaded COVID-19 continues to spread like wildfire, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to conduct preliminary discussions on the fate of the ICC T20 World Cup on March 29, according to reports. An 18-member board of directors including heads of 12 Test playing nations are set to hold discussions surrounding T20 World Cup 2020 on March 29. &nbsp;

ICC set to have preliminary discussions on ICC T20 World Cup on March 29 as COVID-19 continues to impact global sports

The novel coronavirus has left the entire world in a stand-still. While the worldwide economy has taken a massive hit, the sporting calendar has been left shattered as well. Almost every sporting event has been cancelled or postponed with all eyes on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, which was earlier suspended until April 15. However, with the situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to deteriorate with each passing day, the chances are extremely slim that the cash-rich tournament will go ahead after April 15.&nbsp;

As per a report, IPL 2020 might even not happen this year considering the current scenario due to the novel coronavirus. If the cash-rich tournament doesn’t take place in 2020 then the BCCI will take a massive hit on an approximate revenue of INR 2000 crore whereas the eight participating franchises could lose around IJNR 100 crore each.

<h2>"IPL this year might not happen"</h2>

“Given the present situation, I feel the IPL this year might not happen. That’s what it looks like,” a franchise official told a leading daily.

Whereas there’s a sense of unclarity and confusion in the BCCI as no one knows when the travel and visa restrictions will be normalized.&nbsp;

“Nobody has clarity about the future. We don’t know when travel restrictions/visa restrictions will go, when things will settle down. Till then, there’s no point (thinking about the IPL),” a top BCCI official said.

However, the biggest hurdle for IPL will be to bring the overseas players on the same ship. While the coronavirus outbreak has taken almost the entire world under its dreaded wings, some big-name players could opt out of the tournament if it goes ahead in 2020.

“And even if it settles down here but continues in some other country… we are not clear about that also. Japan, the host nation of the Olympics, is talking about a possible postponement. This (the outbreak) is far bigger than any sport or the IPL,” the BCCI official said.

IPL 2020 unlikely to happen this year; BCCI could lose Rs 2000cr, franchises Rs 100cr each

The dark clouds hovering over the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 became darker on Tuesday as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday cancelled a conference call with the franchise owners to discuss the future of the cash-rich tournament amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

IPL 2020 is also looking towards a possible cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the situation surrounding the deadly virus continues to deteriorate. In India, over 450 positive cases and nine deaths have been reported as of Tuesday and almost the entire country is under complete lockdown amid the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

“...humanity first, everything else comes second. The situation has not improved so there is no point in even talking about it. If IPL doesn’t happen so be it,” Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia told PTI.

”There is no point in discussing anything at this point. The whole country is in lockdown. We have to deal with matters much more important than IPL,” added another franchise official, who did not wish to be named.

IPL 2020 was previously scheduled to start on March 29 but was suspended until April 15 given the coronavirus crisis all over the world. Wadia is of the view that everything is irrelevant at the moment because the entire world is fighting against the novel coronavirus

“I can’t even think about the IPL at this point. It is irrelevant along with everything else. The only thing which is relevant is in what we are living in and it is a world war three situation where we are fighting to help so many people,” Wadia said.

'Going toe to toe in the gym' - Herschelle Gibbs picks Virat Kohli as his quarantine partner

There has been a lot of talks surrounding the future of Indian Premier League (IPL) which was earlier scheduled to start from March 29 but got suspended until April 15 amid the coronavirus pandemic that has wrecked havoc not only in India but the entire world. The sporting calendar has already been destroyed with many major events and tournaments getting either postponed or completely cancelled.&nbsp;

With the novel coronavirus spreading like a wildfire and at least 137 positive cases being reported in India, including foreign nationals, the sporting calendar including the IPL 2020 has been shredded into pieces. While the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) being optimistic of conducting the cash-rich tournament after April 15, IPL franchises are ready for a scenario wherein foreign players will need to be quarantined for at least 14 days once they fly to India.

"Yes, the fresh advisory calls for 14-day quarantine for travel from some countries and if the stance remains the same post March 31, that shouldn't be an issue. If we get a clearance from the government and visas are issued, then quarantining the players shouldn't be a big deal. In such a scenario, we can fly them into the country in the first week of April and follow the process of 14-day quarantine,” an official of one of the franchises was quoted as saying by an agency.

"But first, the foreign players need to be given the visa and that is why we need to wait till March 31 to see what the government decides going forward," the official added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the franchise owners are in constant communication and even held a conference call on Monday where they evaluated the entire situation surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. However, there was no update provided as the situation has not improved with reported cases increasing with each passing day.
