Kyle Jamieson was New Zealand’s hero on day three as he claimed his fifth five-wicket haul in just eight Tests to help the Black Caps seize initiative in the ICC World Test Championship Final.

The 26-year-old Jamieson, who only made his Test debut against India in February 2020, secured the all-important wicket of Virat Kohli to prevent the skipper adding to his overnight score of 44.

He also dismissed the dangerous Rishabh Pant (4) before taking the wickets of Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah in successive balls as India slumped to 217 all out from 92.1 overs.

No-one has more WTC five-wicket hauls than Jamieson, while he is only the 11th bowler to take five five-wicket hauls in his first eight Tests - and only the sixth to do so since the First World War.

In reply, openers Tom Latham (30) and Devon Conway (54) put their side in the driving seat with a 70-run partnership before India hit back late on to leave the Black Caps on 101for two heading into day four.

A wet outfield had meant play was delayed by 30 minutes at the start of the day before India resumed on 146 for three, with captain Kohli looking ominous on 44 not out overnight.

But it took no time at all for Jamieson to send India’s talisman packing without adding another run, with the New Zealander trapping the skipper LBW with a perfect in-swinger.

Pant almost lost his wicket in a similar fashion, surviving a marginal LBW on the umpire’s call but Jamieson eventually got his man a few overs later - caught by Latham.

Ajinkya Rahane, India’s highest run-scorer in the WTC, helped steady the ship alongside Ravindra Jadeja but he was unable to add to his three centuries and six half-centuries.

Neil Wagner lured the 33-year-old right-hander into a speculative pull shot which went straight to Latham at forward square leg as Rahane was dismissed for 49 off 117 balls.

Suddenly 149/3 had become 182/6 and while Ravichandran Ashwin provided some stability, he fell victim to Tim Southee for 22 shortly after seeing India past the 200-mark.

Jadeja was given a lifeline on 11 when he was dropped by Southee at third slip after poking at Trent Boult, ensuring India were able to reach the lunchtime interval at 211 for seven.

And Jamieson returned to the fore in the afternoon session, taking the wickets of Sharma and Bumrah in successive balls to seal yet another five-wicket haul.

Sharma was attracted to a rising delivery outside off stump edging through to Ross Taylor at first slip, while a full, straight ball trapped Bumrah plumb LBW for a golden duck.

Jamieson was denied a hat-trick by Mohammed Shami, who anticipated the full-pitched delivery and drove the ball to the boundary with a flourish in response.

Yet just minutes later, following a long sight-screen adjustment break, Jadeja (15 from 53 balls) edged down the leg side to BJ Watling off Boult as India were bowled out for 217.

In reply, Latham and Conway made a cautious start as the Indian seamers looked for an early breakthrough, with Bumrah and Sharma both testing the openers with the swinging ball.

Shami managed to find the edge of Latham’s bat in the 20th over but to the despair of the Indian fans, the ball looped in the air and agonisingly over Jadeja in the gully.

Latham also poked and missed a ball from Bumrah in the final over before tea but New Zealand reached the break without losing a wicket, finishing the afternoon session on 36 for no loss.

Although India continued to threaten with the ball after tea, Conway and Latham remained resolute in overcast conditions as they reached the drinks break 70 without loss.

The partnership was ultimately ended upon the resumption of play, with Latham’s luck running out when he scooped an Ashwin delivery to Kohli at short extra-cover for 30.&nbsp;

But Conway, who scored a double century on his Test debut at the beginning of this month, showed no signs of buckling under the pressure as he reached his half-century from 137 balls.

Conway’s resistance was finally broken just before the close of play for bad light, whipping Sharma to Shami at mid-on, providing India with a late boost to their WTC title hopes.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara was presented with the ICC Hall of Fame cap by former India captain and ICC Hall of Famer Sunil Gavaskar following the wicketkeeper-batsman’s induction last week.

Cricket: WTC Final - Jamieson stars with the ball as New Zealand dominate

Day three of the World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand belonged to Kyle Jamieson. The Kiwi all-rounder scalped a five-wicket haul to limit India to a modest first-innings score of 217, breaking a few records on the way to a second fifer against India in Tests. One of his valued wickets was captain Virat Kohli and Kyle Jamieson shared his experience on the dismissal.&nbsp;

Jamieson was happy to dismiss Virat Kohli during the World Test Championship Final in Southampton. The New Zealand pacer was satisfied to send the Indian skipper back to the pavilion at the beginning of Day 3.&nbsp;

Addressing the media after the game, Kyle Jamieson said: “I think he’s a world-class batter, and those guys don’t tend to have too many chinks in their armors. Certainly, pleasing to get him. Like I said before, he’s obviously a massive part of their line-up, and to get him early certainly set things up nicely for us. Just was pleasing in terms of myself being able to wobble the ball and try and keep him in check a little bit, and to get that wicket was pleasing and just a great start for our game."

The 26-year-old talked about the essential change in the system, as Jamieson received rich benefits for the ideal change.

“It is certainly not my natural length. Naturally, as a taller guy, you are going to be back of a length. While I felt good at times yesterday, I also felt a little bit tentative. My body probably sort of brought my lengths back. Today I felt a lot freer and was able to bring that length fuller. Tried to change my strategy a little bit in terms of trying to get it fuller and getting it to wobble a little bit. That paid off” - he added.&nbsp;

Jamieson was feeling bullish after Day 3, asserting the save day could make things fascinating. The tall pacer glanced back at the game, conceding New Zealand is in an agreeable position going ahead.&nbsp;

“Yeah, I haven’t seen the forecast a huge amount. Obviously, we’ve got a little bit of time up our sleeve with the sixth day. Be interesting to see, I guess, how that plays out. I guess where we’re sitting now it would be pretty comfortable. I think if you said to us at the start of the game that we can get them for low 200s and then to be 100 for two, we’d be pretty happy. We’ll have to see how the next day or so pans out but we’re certainly in a position that we’d like to be in terms of moving the game forward” - he said.

Tom Latham and Devon Conway arranged the precarious beginning stage of the innings with some gutsy batting as the two openers got their heads down and saw off the test.&nbsp;

“From my short time in the team, some of the best batting I've seen. I think the way Tom and Dev approached that, the ball was going to move around, we knew that, and the conditions were probably going to be in the bowlers' favor. The way they approached that pretty tricky period was outstanding” - he said.&nbsp;

With eight wickets close by, New Zealand trail India by 116 runs. Looking forward, Kyle Jamieson wouldn't put a number on a sound lead, repeating the New Zealand bowlers would be content with whatever they were given.&nbsp;

“Well, it’s probably a little bit early to say what sort of lead. I think you’re always hoping for more of a lead or as much of a lead as you can get. I think obviously the key moving forward is to try and build on that, and if we can get ahead, great. If we can get 50, 100, 150, great. I think as a bowling unit we’ll take whatever we can get really” - he signed off.

Kyle Jamieson said his team is satisfied to keep things yet to be determined after India came to 146 for three on day two of the World Test Championship final on Saturday.&nbsp;

Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill showed striking application against the moving ball to share a 62-run stand.

Notwithstanding, New Zealand had the option to take three wickets before terrible light carried an untimely finish to day two. The first day of the season was cleaned out.

During a post-match press conference after the end of day 2, Kyle Jamieson said:&nbsp;"It was a good day for Test cricket, the disruption probably didn't help the momentum that we had at that point of time. It was crucial to try to get balls in reasonable areas for long periods, how we did that throughout the day after they started off well was pretty pleasing, to keep things in the balance."

"There is a reason why they are one of the top teams in the world for a long period of time. For us, it was about putting the ball in the right areas and I think we were able to do that for the most part and take that confidence tomorrow" - he added.

Indian batting mentor Vikram Rathour said that a first innings score of 250 or more will place India in a battling position. After some information about his assessment, Kyle Jamieson said: "We certainly haven't spoken around a number, I think there is an opportunity to score runs as a batting unit and there is still some help with the ball moving around and seaming. The Indian batsmen have shown if you are patient, there are still runs to be had. So whether 250 is a good score, only time will tell."

Kyle Jamieson said his team was able to keep the ball in testing regions for an extensive stretch.

"You look at their lineup, you are expecting those guys to do well, they have good records and they have done special things around the world. They have put away slightly bad ball, they were able to score freely," he said.

"They certainly played well in first hours. We tried to wobble the ball a bit and keep guys engaged. It is part of our arsenal, there were no set plans how we want to operate after that first hour."&nbsp;

Kyle Jamieson was glad to see Shubman Gill not getting genuinely hurt by the bouncer bowled to him during the World Test Championship Final.&nbsp;

In the 17th over, Kyle Jamieson bowled a short delivery to Shubman Gill that smacked flush on the helmet. The physios and substitutes of the Indian cricket crew promptly raced to the middle to beware of Shubman Gill. Fortunately, the 21-year-old appeared all good, and he kept on batting in the middle.&nbsp;

"No, we didn't really talk about it too much. Obviously, I'm glad that he's okay and he continued on. It was not nice seeing someone get hurt and have the physios run on, so it was obviously good to see that he was okay and he was able to continue on."

With the New Zealand pacers' bowling pair, the Indian opening couple of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill attempted to descend the track at times.&nbsp;

"It was an interesting one, it is not something we probably expected a huge amount. My take was that, if they were walking then they were not comfortable where I was bowling in the crease, so I tried to take that as a positive. The more they felt that they had to move around to throw us off, we could just hang in there and it sort of can get dividends" - he concluded.

Kyle Jamieson said his team is satisfied to keep things yet to be determined after India came to 146 for three on day two of the World Test Championship final on Saturday. Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill showed striking application against the moving ball to share a 62-run stand. The first day of the season was cleaned out. During a post-match press conference after the end of day 2, Kyle Jamieson said: "It was a good day for Test cricket, the disruption probably didn't help the momentum that we had at that point of time. It was crucial to try to get balls in reasonable areas for long periods, how we did that throughout the day after they started off well was pretty pleasing, to keep things in the balance." "There is a reason why they are one of the top teams in the world for a long period of time. So whether 250 is a good score, only time will tell." Kyle Jamieson said his team was able to keep the ball in testing regions for an extensive stretch. "You look at their lineup, you are expecting those guys to do well, they have good records and they have done special things around the world. They have put away slightly bad ball, they were able to score freely," he said. "They certainly played well in first hours. We tried to wobble the ball a bit and keep guys engaged. It is part of our arsenal, there were no set plans how we want to operate after that first hour." Kyle Jamieson was glad to see Shubman Gill not getting genuinely hurt by the bouncer bowled to him during the World Test Championship Final. In the 17th over, Kyle Jamieson bowled a short delivery to Shubman Gill that smacked flush on the helmet. The physios and substitutes of the Indian cricket crew promptly raced to the middle to beware of Shubman Gill. Fortunately, the 21-year-old appeared all good, and he kept on batting in the middle. "No, we didn't really talk about it too much. Obviously, I'm glad that he's okay and he continued on. It was not nice seeing someone get hurt and have the physios run on, so it was obviously good to see that he was okay and he was able to continue on." He&nbsp;isn't too stressed over Cheteshwar Pujara's common issues with the bouncer. He said that the No.3 player hasn't had specific issues with pace and simply needs to convert over his starts.

WTC Final: India's batting coach discloses what will be a fitting total against New Zealand

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has weighed his opinion on the aspect of stopping play due to bad light during the inaugural World Test Championship final between New Zealand and India at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton. <o:p></o:p>

After a washed-out Day 1, play started on Day 2 but was interrupted a couple of times due to bad light. The third session of Day 2 was a stop-start as players were left frustrated by going on and off the pitch constantly. &nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

Manjrekar has said that the rules for bad light can be a bit more reasonable as he said that concept of a batsman not being able to see the ball which could be potentially dangerous for them has now completely gone out of the equation.<o:p></o:p>

"The rules (for bad light) can be a little bit (more) reasonable. The concept of bad light is that you are so much at a disadvantage that a batsman cannot see the ball and they could get out or could get hurt. But that yardstick is now completely gone," Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo.

Legendary former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Sunday reacted to Ajinkya Rahane’s dismissal on Day 3 of the ongoing World Test Championship final against New Zealand at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton.<o:p></o:p>

Rahane did all the hard work to negate the threat in the first hour on Day 3 and was on the verge of getting his 24th Test half-century. However, India’s vice-captain gifted his wicket after playing a half-hearted pull shot against Neil Wagner as Tom Latham took a dolly at square-leg. <o:p></o:p>

Gavaskar, on-air, said that the only reason Rahane went for that shot could be because he was nearing his half-century. <o:p></o:p>

“Only explanation is that he was going for his fifty, he was looking to get a single to reach his milestone by a little dab on the onside. In the end, the ball bounced and he couldn’t control, in fact, the ball before that too he couldn’t control it,” Gavaskar said in commentary.

Brad Hogg trusts India's Test pillar Cheteshwar Pujara's failure to rotate strike in England could cause a touch of pressure to&nbsp;the batsman at the non-striker's end. Pujara's moderate batting has been a state of discussion for various years at this point and Brad Hogg offered his input on it.&nbsp;

The previous Australian left-arm wrist spinner feels that in spite of the fact that Pujara's low strike rate was viable against Australia Down Under, the ball will continue swinging in England for a more drawn-out timeframe. Hogg wants Pujara to be more proactive while batting in these intense conditions.&nbsp;

"In Australia, the ball doesn't swing for long. But in England, the ball continues to swing even after it gets old and this is where Pujara's technique might cause more issues than not. It took a long time to get off the mark yesterday and if the batsman at the non-striker's end is in full flow, it is going to put pressure and that can create a bit of impatience and cause a wicket or two with his partner at the other end."

India Women’s cricket team showed grit and resilience to draw the one-off Test against England in Bristol following a superb show by the likes of Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana among others. Sneh Rana scored an unbeaten 80 and was superbly helped by Taniya Bhatia as they put out a record partnership at number 10 to save the match for India on Day 4 of the one-off Test. I also feel there should be more than one game in a series, there should be a three-match Test series. Women’s cricket is improving and the only way in which you can improve more is by playing more Test cricket," Hogg added.

Former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond has said that the Black Caps couldn’t have asked for a better scenario to take on India in the World Test Championship final. New Zealand headed into the inaugural WTC Final on the back of a 1-0 Test series win over England whereas India prepared for the final with an intra-squad stimulation match. <o:p></o:p>

Bond backed New Zealand to wipe off the hard-luck factor in the WTC Final and get the better of India to lift the Mace. <o:p></o:p>

"We couldn't have asked for a better scenario to play India in England with no practice. Us coming off two Test matches. We are primed to win something," said Bond on the TOI Sportscast.<o:p></o:p>

"So I am hoping that some of the hard-luck stories that we have had in the last couple of World Cups, we will flip the script this time and lift up that mace and be the champions, which will be pretty special, pretty cool for our sport over here, because cricket is the number two sport in the country and for us to achieve that (win WTC Final) will be fantastic," he further said.

India enjoyed a fairly favourable Day 2 of the World Test Championship final at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton on Saturday as the Virat Kohli-led outfit posted 146/3 amid disruptions due to bad light. Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave India a solid start as the duo posted an opening 62-run stand. <o:p></o:p>

Rohit and Gill, both playing their first Test in England as Team India openers, were cautious and aggressive with their approach at the same time with the blend pushing New Zealand’s start with the ball on the back foot. While Trent Boult and Tim Southee were a bit awry in the first spell with the new ball, Rohit and Gill made sure to pounce on the bad deliveries and keep the scoreboard ticking at a brisk pace. <o:p></o:p>

While the duo threw their wickets away after settling down in overcast conditions in Southampton against a world-class New Zealand pace attack, India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour lauded the Rohit and Gill for showing patience under challenging conditions but also showing intent to keep pushing the pressure back on the bowlers. <o:p></o:p>

“They batted well. I would give a lot of credit to even Rohit and I think Gill, as well, because I think they started off really well. It was&nbsp;pretty challenging conditions when we started. It was a fresh wicket, we lost the toss, and it was overcast throughout the day. So credit to the batters. I thought they showed a lot of restraint, a lot of discipline, and I think we have ended it pretty well,” Rathour said at the post-day press conference after Day 2.

R. Sridhar, Team India's fielding coach has affirmed that the playing XI announced for the World Test Championship Final isn't 100% certain to play.&nbsp;

Addressing the media on Friday, R. Sridhar said the team management is certain that the playing XI reported for the WTC Final will perform well under any conditions. In any case, if necessary, Team India may consider changing the playing XI at the hour of the toss.&nbsp;

“I think the XI which has been announced is an XI that takes the pitch and conditions out of the equation. Having said that, the toss is not yet over, so if it needs to be taken, a decision will be taken at the time of the toss” - he said

Sridhar additionally spoke about the significance of being in a positive mindset given the conceivable stop-start nature of the final.&nbsp;

“To keep them in a good mental space, that is something that is very important because they are going to be on and off the field with the weather so they will have to know how to keep their concentration going, switching on, switching off. &nbsp;

“That is something all the players are aware of, they are a very experienced bunch of players. They have played a few finals, won a few tournaments, and played a few Test matches, each one in that XI. So they all know how to do it and are in a good frame of mind, a good space.”

“There is no mental challenge really. Tomorrow is going to be the first day of the Test, and we will go in like we approach any new game. That wouldn’t be a big challenge for the boys” - he added.

The 21-year-old enrolled a pitiful 119 runs in seven innings with a solitary fifty and two ducks against England. R. Sridhar dissipated worries over Shubman Gill's structure, he said:&nbsp;

“Shubman Gill is a million-dollar cricketer, isn’t he? I am not in a position to give the technical changes in his batting. But I have given throwdowns to him all these days, and he looks in good nick with an excellent mindset. He is clear about his role. That puts him in good stead for this match, irrespective of the weather. He is an excellent prospect for India, and I can’t wait to watch him perform.”

WTC Final: If needed final decision on playing XI to be taken before toss, says R. Sridhar

Virat Kohli has by and large enlisted his resistance to the ICC's abrupt changes&nbsp;in rules for the debut World Test Championship points table. The Indian captain said his team had viewed itself as qualified before the framework came into force, and the change just made them more resolved to perform.&nbsp;

To relieve the COVID-19 pandemic's effect on the cricketing schedules, the ICC had moved to a percentage-based focuses framework in October last year. The amended guidelines implied India lost their top position and staggered to the third position.

Ahead of the WTC final, Kohli&nbsp;spoke of how his team assumed its part obediently by partaking in all the series introduced to it.

"It wasn't supposed to be a topsy-turvy ride, to be honest. When you are sitting at home and the rules change suddenly you get confused as to what happened. Without anyone's control, we did not miss or choose to miss any series through the course of the World Test Championship apart from the scheduling that wasn't done at all. We pretty much played everything that was presented to us," said the Indian skipper.

"And yeah, in our minds, we had qualified way before things got complicated anyway. That just gave us more determination and more clarity as to where we want to go and what we want to achieve," he said.

Kohli additionally took a gander at the positive side of the issues, declaring that the difference in rules kept the group from getting careless and made them much more eager to win.

"So, looking back now, it was probably a good thing that happened. There was no room for complacency. If we had qualified earlier maybe we would have relaxed a little bit but the situation allowed us to be more hungry and more determined and know exactly what was going at that moment and use that as a fueling factor and a motivation to keep moving forward regardless of whatever was going on the outside," he added.

Kohli suggested changes to the WTC rules, including some guidelines against the groups who didn't take an interest in the scheduled arrangement. He added that the general idea of the WTC is a positive step and pervades Test cricket with context and a more anima.&nbsp;

"Firstly, not for the rules to change overnight. That'll be helpful if there's more clarity around what's happening and which direction we are heading into and you know also for the teams who haven't played series for some reasons to have some kind of ruling there as to what happens after," he said.

"For me, it's been a very positive step in the right direction because you understand that in every series you are playing and competing for something and there's no room for complacency, or for playing out an easy draw. If you can afford to go for a few points, you'll go for them. I think it's a step in the right direction for Test cricket," he added.

WTC Final: Reserve day will be used in India vs New Zealand clash as rain wipes off Day 1

Sunil Gavaskar trusts Team India may change their playing XI not long before the toss in the World Test Championship finale. Sunil Gavaskar, who is at present at Southampton for discourse obligations, said the severe climate there is helpful for pacers, which could provoke India to incorporate an expert batsman almost too late.&nbsp;

India declared their playing XI on Thursday evening, with a bowling mix of three seamers and two twist bowling all-rounders in Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. New Zealand, then again, has conveyed a careful, pause-and-watch approach and will just uncover their group at the throw.&nbsp;

Sunil Gavaskar thought that both of the Indian spinners may need to clear a path for a batsman while Rishabh Pant could be shunted by one spot in the batting order. In a conversation with AajTak, Sunil Gavaskar said:&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Yes, that's the thing. See, they might have announced the team yesterday, nothing is finalized until the captains share the sheets with each other during the toss. So, you can change the team till the very last moment. As a captain, when I used to be confused between playing a spinner or an extra batsman, I used to see the opposition's eleven and scratch and change the team on my paper just before the toss."

"So, the eleven can be changed anytime before the toss. So I feel like maybe they'll think of playing another batsman because of the weather. Because these conditions are suitable for New Zealand fast bowlers so Rishabh Pant is at six, he might shift to seven and an extra batsman might play. Seeing this weather, one spinner might be dropped" - he added.&nbsp;

The first 15-part crew incorporates Hanuma Vihari, Wriddhiman Saha, Umesh Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj as stores. Hanuma Vihari would be the most probable alternative for an additional batsman, while Mohammed Siraj could be acquired if the team chooses to bargain it's anything but an extra seamer.&nbsp;

The main look on the pitch showed an even layer of grass. Sunil Gavaskar has uncovered that as opposed to assumptions, it hasn't been shaved off yet because of the deluge, and all things considered, the last pitch will have some grass on it. He added that this could mean the group winning the throw may handle first without a second thought.&nbsp;

"Yes, that will be the thinking of both the captains. It has been raining since yesterday so the groundsman hasn't got the chance to trim the grass and roll the pitch. There will definitely be some grass then. That's why I feel that as both India and New Zealand have brilliant new-ball attacks, they'll want to safeguard their own batters and field first if they win the toss. If they can pick up 3-4 wickets in the first hour, the match will be in their control" - he said.

The WTC final didn't get off to the best of starts as the first session was wiped out. The ground is doused and the conjecture for the remainder of the day is additionally hopeless. The reserve day, June 23, may prove to be useful if conditions improve in the coming days.

Cricket: India's Sneh Rana dedicates stellar Test debut to late father

Playing fearless cricket is top of the agenda for Ajinkya Rahane as he urged India’s batsmen to express themselves against New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship Final.

The 33-year-old right-hander has been India’s highest run-scorer in the inaugural WTC, scoring 1,095 runs at 43.80 during the cycle and notching three centuries and six half-centuries.&nbsp;

But he will need to be at his very best in Southampton against New Zealand’s greatest WTC wicket-taker in the form of Tim Southee in one of the most hotly-anticipated battles.&nbsp;

And while a place in cricketing history is up for grabs for the victorious team in Southampton, Rahane insists India’s focus is only on playing their natural game rather than the high stakes.

“We just want to take this as just another game, play it as just another game. What is important for us is to start well, we know New Zealand are a very good team,” said Rahane.&nbsp;

“We don’t want to take them lightly and as a team, we have been doing so well and we just want to continue what we’ve been doing over the last two years, play one day, one session at a time.&nbsp;

“Our planning, our strategies will be completely different from when we last played against England here in Southampton [in 2018], the plan was different that time.&nbsp;

“We just want to take this as just another game. We don’t want to put ourselves under pressure especially playing a Test match after a long time now.&nbsp;

“I think what is important in this Test match is playing with freedom, playing fearless cricket as a team and backing each other. That will really help us rather than thinking about the result.&nbsp;

“As long as we’re backing ourselves and following our processes and playing our natural game as an individual and as a team, that will matter a lot.”&nbsp;

India’s last Test in Southampton ended in a 60-run defeat to England in 2018 but while Rahane hopes his experience at the venue comes in handy, he is only worried about the present.&nbsp;

“I have played at this venue many times now, I’ve played for Hampshire also here, so I do know the conditions well, but what is important is to be in the moment, be in the present,” he added.

Southee praises Indian batting line-up:&nbsp;Southee proved a menace in both games and comes into the final showdown with 51 wickets at 20.66 in the WTC, with three five-wicket hauls and a six-for against England last time out.&nbsp;

But despite the veteran Kiwi pacer being in superb form, he acknowledged that the New Zealand bowling attack will have little room for error against India’s dynamic batting line-up.&nbsp;

“It’s an exciting batting line-up, the mix of experienced guys and a couple of young guys who have come in and played with that freedom and that excitement that they have,” he said.&nbsp;

“Rohit Sharma’s a tremendous player in all three formats and personally a guy I like watching bat, his style and the way he can take a game away from the opposition is great to watch.&nbsp;

“But I know as a bowling group that it’s a dangerous line-up throughout, Rohit is only one of many very good batters in this Indian batting line-up that we have to be on top of our game against.”&nbsp;

On India’s skipper, he added: “As a player, you like to test yourself against the best and Virat [Kohli] is one of the best to play the game, definitely one of the modern-day greats but it’s not only him.&nbsp;

“We know there are so many dangerous players in this Indian batting line-up so we’re going to have to be on top of our game as a bowling unit and we know how dangerous they can be.”&nbsp;

Playing fearless cricket is top of the agenda for Ajinkya Rahane as he urged India’s batsmen to express themselves against New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship Final.

Playing fearless cricket is top of the agenda for Ajinkya Rahane as he urged India’s batsmen to express themselves against New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship Final. The 33-year-old right-hander has been India’s highest run-scorer in the inaugural WTC, scoring 1,095 runs at 43.80 during the cycle and notching three centuries and six half-centuries. But he will need to be at his very best in Southampton against New Zealand’s greatest WTC wicket-taker in the form of Tim Southee in one of the most hotly-anticipated battles. And while a place in cricketing history is up for grabs for the victorious team in Southampton, Rahane insists India’s focus is only on playing their natural game rather than the high stakes. “We just want to take this as just another game, play it as just another game. Fearless cricket the priority for Rahane as WTC Final vs New Zealand nears

The inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle of 2019-21 will conclude with the high-octane final between India and New Zealand at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, starting Friday. While there have been predictions, permutation&nbsp;and combinations being floated around by many former cricketers and pundits, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar has weighed his opinion on the much-anticipated WTC Final. <o:p></o:p>

In an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, Sachin Tendulkar talked about a range of topics in the build-up to the WTC Final including the team balance of India and New Zealand, the format of World Test Championship, phases that could define the grand finale, strengths of both the squad and much more.

There has been a lot of talk&nbsp;around the format of the WTC Final with many irked with it being a one-off Test. Opining on the matter, Tendulkar said the continuity of a two-year cycle comes to a disruptive end when the winner is decided in a one-off contest. &nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

“When you are playing a 50-over or T20 World Cup, you play each side only once so it is fair to have a one-final match. But in World Test Championship, you play against Australia, New Zealand, England and other teams in a series format. The continuity breaks as soon as you play just one match as a final. Ideally, it should have been a three-match series but with the pandemic and restrictions, it has become tricky for the time being. Maybe in future, ICC can find a window where two finalists can play the WTC final in a series format.” Sachin Tendulkar told WION in an exclusive interview.

Indian skipper Kohli said that a one-off Test match to determine the winner of WTC is not a “true reflection” of his team while adding he is treating it as “just another” match. With the Test Mace on the line, Kohli isn’t too bothered about winning or losing the match yet and wants to enjoy the occasion of being in the inaugural edition of the WTC.<o:p></o:p>

“If we win, cricket will not stop and if we lose also, cricket won’t stop. We are playing in quest of excellence and understand who we are as a team," the eloquent Indian captain added.

Australian batsman David Warner reckons the ICC World Test Championship between India and New Zealand will be won by the side who bowls better during the course of the much-awaited match, starting Friday in Southampton.<o:p></o:p>

On the battle between two world-class captains and high-quality batters – Kane Williamson and Virat Kohli – Warner didn’t pick his favourite but lauded the duo for their class and quality. <o:p></o:p>

"You look at two world-class batsmen and world-class captains, both average above 50," he told India Today on eSalaamCricket.<o:p></o:p>

Warner feels while New Zealand have played two-Test series against England in the build-up to the WTC final, the conditions in Southampton will be completely different to what London and Birmingham had to offer in the rubber. He further predicted that with the Dukes ball, it is going to be a battle of the bowlers.

It is going to be a great battle, both teams are using a Dukes ball, so I think it is going to be a battle of the bowlers," he said.<o:p></o:p>

Former England captains Alastair Cook and Michael Vaughan have backed New Zealand to win the much-awaited ICC World Test Championship, against India, in Southampton, starting Friday. <o:p></o:p>

Vaughan and Cook agreed that New Zealand are a high-class team and well capable of playing disciplined cricket with both bat and ball for long periods in the longest format of the game. <o:p></o:p>

"I fancy New Zealand. I know I'm going to get absolute pelters on social media for going against India. But the way New Zealand played in the two Tests against England, I think they're going to do it. They are a high-class cricket team - I like every aspect of their game," Vaughan told 'BBC'.<o:p></o:p>

"New Zealand play long periods of disciplined cricket, with bat and ball. They bat with a great maturity and read the situation perfectly.<o:p></o:p>

"If you analyse Test cricket, generally it is the side that are able to cover all the bases the longest that wins, and New Zealand are able to do that because they have a very skillful bowling attack," he added.

While India are heading into the WTC final without any match practice, England have played a two-Test series against England, winning it 1-0. Cook reckons that New Zealand’s match sharpness will help them get a favourable result in the WTC final. <o:p></o:p>

"New Zealand are going to win. They're two matches further into match-sharpness after the series win against England - they're used to playing under pressure and in English conditions."<o:p></o:p>

"The only thing they've got to deal with is the selection question - and getting the balance of the side right. I hope they go in with Ajaz Patel, the left-arm spinner.<o:p></o:p>

"But that means one of their big four seam bowlers - Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner or Matt Henry - who have done such a good job for them, isn't going to play," he added.<o:p></o:p>

Cricket: WTC Final, India vs New Zealand: Day-wise weather forecast as rain threat looms in Southampton

India Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane on Wednesday said that he would play his natural game in the much-anticipated ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand, beginning June 18 in Southampton. <o:p></o:p>

When asked how he takes criticism when representing India on the international stage, Rahane said that he always plays for the team and is happy to take criticism as long as he is contributing to the Indian team.<o:p></o:p>

"I will be playing my natural game. Winning is really important whether I score a hundred or not. I don't want to put too much pressure on myself and even if my 30 or 40 is valuable for the team, I am happy. I am happy to take criticism. I feel it's because of the criticism I'm here. I always want to give my best whether people criticise me or not," said Rahane during a virtual press conference. <o:p></o:p>

"I don't really think about criticism. If people criticise me, that's their thing, and that's their job. I cannot control all these things. For me, I always focus on controllable, putting my best foot forward, working hard, and following my process and the result follows,” he added.

The Indian side has a blend of youth and experience. While the experienced players have bailed out India numerous times in the WTC cycle, the youngsters have stepped in whenever they have been asked to win matches for their country. "Personally, I am not telling them anything. They know their game-plan. It's about giving them freedom, backing them, believing in their abilities. We don't want any kind of confusion," he added. <o:p></o:p>

"I like to be in the present. I know the conditions. It's about being in the moment, adjusting to the conditions. Also, me being the highest scorer doesn't matter now. It's past. I just don't want to put extra pressure and would want to play freely," he added. <o:p></o:p>
