The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) concluded with a fitting final between two of the most deserving sides of the season. Gujarat Titans (GT) got the better of Rajasthan Royals (RR) to cap off an incredible debut season by lifting their maiden IPL trophy. It was a fairytale run for the Titans, who had saved their best for the last and came up with a clinical performance in the final to clinch the elusive trophy for the first time.

Hardik Pandya received the prestigious trophy after a magnificent tournament for the Titans. The star all-rounder was leading a team for the first time in his IPL career and showcased exceptional leadership qualities to prove why he can be one of the strong contenders for Team India's captaincy going forward.

It was a memorable season for Hardik and his men, who proved the naysayers wrong with some terrific cricket throughout the tournament. Debunking the myth that the trophy is won at the auction table, Gujarat Titans, who not many had given a chance after the mega auction earlier this year, got the best out of their players and had to wait for lesser than many for their first title.

While Hardik had a phenomenal debut campaign as captain of the Gujarat Titans, not all new captains managed to impress with their leadership in IPL 2022. There were a total of four new captains, who were leading a side for the first time in their IPL careers this year and all four had contrasting journeys.

While Hardik was roped in as their captain by the Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore replaced the mighty Virat Kohli with a cool and calm head in Faf du Plessis. Mayank Agarwal took over the reins at Punjab Kings after KL Rahul's departure and it was Ravindra Jadeja, who was in charge of the Chennai Super Kings after MS Dhoni pulled off yet another surprise to step down from captaincy ahead of the season only to make a comeback later.

Here is a look at how the four new captains fared in IPL 2022:

Hardik Pandya

The most impressive of the lot was unarguable Hardik Pandya, who proved many wrong with display some brilliant leadership qualities throughout the season. After being released by Mumbai Indians, Hardik was appointed as captain by debutants Gujarat Titans, with many questioning the decision to hand over the reins to the star all-rounder, who had dealt with injury issues over the past couple of years and had not contributed much with the ball either.

Hardik led from the front as the season began and promoted himself up the order to take more responsibility with the bat. While he didn't bowl regularly, he always stepped up when his team needed him with the ball and picked up wickets at crucial junctures. Besides being an inspiring leader, he always let his game do the talking on the pitch.

Hardik finished as the highest run-getter for the Titans with 487 runs in 15 matches and also picked up 8 wickets. He delivered a match-winning all-round performance in the final against the Rajasthan Royals to power his side to their maiden title with 3 wickets and 34 runs. Hardik became only the third captain in IPL history to bag the Man of the Match award in an IPL final.

Ravindra Jadeja

<img alt="jadeja" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="b7b23850-6b71-437c-bcf2-d54c39abec60" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Jadeja%20CSK.png" />

Expectations were not too high from Ravindra Jadeja after he surprisingly took over from MS Dhoni as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2022. While there were indications that CSK might groom a successor for Dhoni under him this season, not many had expected the legendary wicket-keeper batter to give up captaincy and not lead the team at all this season.

As it turned out, Dhoni managed to spring a surprise once again for his fans by handing over the charge to Jadeja. CSK got off to a torrid start and were expected to bounce back but they ended up losing their first four games in a row before bagging their first win against RCB in their fifth game of the season.

Jadeja looked far from a leader on the field and was finding it difficult to marshal his troops initially. His bowling changes were being found out and the absence of key players due to injuries was not helping his cause. The pressure got the better of the formidable all-rounder taking a toll on his personal game.

He was failing to deliver with the bat and wickets too had dried up. If that was not enough, Jadeja also made costly errors on the field. Before it could have gotten worse, Jadeja decided to step down and hand back the reins to Dhoni after six losses and just two wins in their first eight matches. Safe to say, it was far from a perfect captaincy stint for Jadeja and was a short-lived one which ended with just a couple of wins in 8 games.

Mayank Agarwal&nbsp;

Punjab Kings found themselves without a leader of the pack yet again ahead of the start of IPL 2022 after KL Rahul decided to part ways with the franchise. Punjab Kings had invested in Rahul back in 2018 with an aim to groom their future leader in him but his exit left the franchise seeking a captain once again in the mega auction.

While they bought some experienced campaigners in Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada and Jonny Bairstow, Punjab Kings showed their faith in Mayank Agarwal for the leadership role. Mayank had been part of the franchise for a while now and had also got significant experience at the international and domestic levels.

However, he couldn't impress much in his debut stint as captain and had an average run with the franchise. Punjab Kings remained inconsistent throughout the tournament and failed to win two matches on the trot even once. They came close but failed to qualify for the playoffs with 14 points from 14 games.

Their approach with the bat was lauded by many as they played some aggressive cricket and showed the right intent but their bowlers failed to compliment the batters at times in what was yet another season of ups and downs for the Anil Kumble-coached side.

Faf du Plessis

There was immense excitement surrounding Faf du Plessis' appointment as the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of the start of the season. Du Plessis had replaced Virat Kohli, a bonafide superstar who had led the team to back-to-back playoffs in the last two seasons but failed to get them over the line.

With Du Plessis' arrival, it seemed RCB might go on to crack&nbsp;the IPL-winning code in the 2022 season and it did see to unfold as the season began. RCB were a much better unit under the former CSK man, who had been part of several IPL-winning squads with the Yellow Army.

Du Plessis had the pedigree of a leader who could inspire RCB to their maiden IPL title and he did take them to the playoffs for the third season in a row. However, the team faltered again on the big stage and was knocked out of the playoffs.

However, there were a lot of positives from RCB's campaign as they saw the rise of some of the youngsters like Rajat Patidar and Mahipal Lomror while the likes of Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga dazzled with the ball. A lot of the current players in RCB will only get better in the years to come and they might go on to achieve something special if they continue working hard.

From Hardik Pandya to Ravindra Jadeja: How new captains fared in IPL 2022?

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) saw a number of youngsters once again rise to prominence with their impactful performances for their teams throughout the tournament. While the likes of Umran Malik and Mohsin Khan turned out to be the finds of the tournament, several other young guns like Rajat Patidar, Jitesh Sharma and Ayush Badoni also impressed with their talent and skills. Some of the youngsters turned out to be the most valuable players of the season considering their low buying price and brilliant show on the field.

While the youngsters rose to the occasion yet again, a number of superstars failed to deliver in the recently-concluded season. It was a forgetful season for the 'Big 3' - MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. While Dhoni still managed to dazzle with the bat in patches despite being past his prime at 40, a lot was expected from Kohli and Rohit, who struggled to deliver throughout the season.

As per an analysis by the Times of India, Rohit, Dhoni and Kohli were among the least value money buys in IPL 2022. In a report, TOI analysed players' data and statistics based on their performance and the price they were bought for by their respective teams in the recently-concluded IPL 2022. The players were given points per million INR spent on them and were rated accordingly.

Punjab Kings' wicket-keeper batter Jitesh Sharma turned out to be the most valuable player with 241.8 points. He was bought for a sum of just Rs 20 lakh (INR 2 million) and scored 234 runs for his franchise at a strike rate of 163.63. Lucknow Super Giants pacer Mohsin Khan finished at the second spot for his 14 wickets in 9 games at a stunning economy of 5.96. Mohsin was bought by LSG for Rs 20 lakh (INR 2 million)

On the other hand, Kohli, who struggled to get going with the willow throughout the season, was placed at the 157th spot in the overall rankings having managed only 2.6 points per million. The RCB star scored 341 runs in 16 matches and failed to power his team to the final. Dhoni finished at the 161st spot with 232 runs in 14 games while Rohit managed to earn only 1 point per million and got the 178th spot.

Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli among least valuable players for their franchises in IPL 2022 - Report

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) made it to their third straight playoffs in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. However, they failed to go the distance once again as their wait for their maiden IPL title got extended. While it was a great season for the franchise under new skipper Faf du Plessis, RCB superstar Virat Kohli had a forgetful campaign. Kohli struggled for consistency throughout the season and failed to fire with the bat.

A lot was expected from Kohli in IPL 2022 after he gave up captaincy last year and was playing only as a batter this season. He was expected to bat freely and pile on runs for his team but that was not the case as Kohli struggled to score runs against almost every team in the competition.&nbsp;

The batting maestro managed only 341 runs in 16 matches at a poor average of 22.73 and a below-par strike rate of 115.99. It was an abysmal season for the former RCB skipper, who was also dismissed on ducks thrice and was trolled heavily by a section of fans for his dismal show.

However, Kohli has found support from the legendary Shoaib Akhtar after enduring a difficult season for RCB. The former Pakistan pacer has hit out at the critics of the RCB star and said he deserves respect for what he has done in international cricket and IPL. Kohli is the leading run-getter of all time in IPL history and has been one of India's best batters for several years now.

Akhtar called Kohli the greatest of all time and said as a Pakistani, he wishes to see the Indian batter play till the age of 45 and score as many as 10 international centuries. The legendary Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for scoring 100 centuries in international cricket and no batter has managed to come close to the feat. Kohli is the only active batter who can break Tendulkar's record as he has 70 hundreds to his name in international cricket at present.

“Before passing statements, people should understand that small kids look up to them. Say good things about Virat Kohli. Give him the respect he deserves. As a Pakistani, I am saying that he is the greatest player of all time. I want him to score 110 centuries in international cricket. I want him to play till the age of 45,” Akhtar said on Sportskeeda.

“This tough situation is preparing you for 110 centuries. People are writing you off, tweeting against you. If you tweet about Diwali, you are criticised. People tweet about your wife and kid. When you lose the World Cup, you are heavily criticised. Things cannot get any worse. Just go out there, and show everyone who Virat Kohli is,” he added.

A lot was expected from Kohli in IPL 2022 after he gave up captaincy last year and was playing only as a batter this season. He was expected to bat freely and pile on runs for his team but that was not the case as Kohli struggled to score runs against almost every team in the competition. Hardik Pandya led Gujarat Titans (GT) to a memorable triumph in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. After dominating the proceedings in the league stage of the tournament, GT defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) twice in the first Qualifier and the final to cap off a memorable season with the elusive trophy. Gujarat Titans became only the second team after RR to win the IPL in their debut season.

With ten teams entering the competition this year, Hardik was among the new captains to watch out for in the tournament. He was roped in by Gujarat Titans in the players'&nbsp;draft after being released by his former side Mumbai Indians (MI). The star all-rounder was also named captain of the team and led the side exceptionally well throughout the tournament.

Hardik was brilliant as a leader and also led from the front with the bat as he finished as the highest run-getter for his side with 487 runs from 15 matches at an average of 44.27 and a strike rate of over 131. He also picked up 8 wickets with the ball and delivered a match-winning all-round performance in the final against the Royals.

Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja said Mumbai Indians fans would be feeling the pain after witnessing Hardik lift the IPL 2022 trophy following his exit from MI. Hardik had joined MI in 2015 and played only for the five-time champions before being released earlier this year. MI played a key role in Hardik's development as he also went on to become a regular for India across formats.

“He is one of those who gets inspired by the crowd. He likes the crowd, likes the people. If there is any dard (pain) it will be felt by the Mumbai fans. They will probably feeling that pain today, not the Gujarat fans,” Jadeja said on Cricbuzz talking about Hardik's incredible feat with the Titans.

Jadeja credited Mumbai Indians for their role in Hardik's growth and said the franchise made the star all-rounder what he is today. Not just Hardik, but Mumbai Indians have also unearthed the likes of Krunal Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, who became strong pillars of the franchise ever since.

"He has picked the best from each one of them. You have got to keep learning, it is a process in life. Experience will always make you better. He has had a great run here but he is definitely going to learn as he grows. He has probably grasped most from (MI)," said Jadeja about Hardik's growth at MI.

He has come from Baroda, played local cricket there but Mumbai Indians made Hardik Pandya. The Pandya we see today is thanks to Mumbai Indians. Rohit Sharma the captain and everyone else over there. I think MI has a better setup to educate you," he added.

Mumbai Indians fans will be feeling the pain: Ajay Jadeja on Hardik Pandya inspiring GT to maiden IPL title

Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in IPL 2022 final to cap off a fairytale run by clinching their maiden title in their debut season. The Titans were the most consistent team in the league stage and were the first to qualify for the playoffs before beating Rajasthan Royals twice in the knockout stage to win the elusive trophy for the first time.

Gujarat Titans script fairytale run to win maiden IPL title in debut season

Hardik Pandya has been garnering praise from all corners for his excellent captaincy in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after leading Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden title triumph in their debut campaign. Hardik was roped in by GT ahead of the start of IPL 2022 after being released by his former side Mumbai Indians. The star all-rounder was also appointed as the captain of his side and the moves turned out to be a masterstroke as Hardik inspired his team to their first title in his first season as captain.

Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by seven wickets in the final of IPL 2022 on Sunday (May 29) to clinch the elusive trophy and cap off a fairytale run this season. Gujarat Titans were one of the most consistent teams throughout the league stage and were the first to reach the playoffs. They came up against Rajasthan Royals twice in the knockout stage and defeated them on both occasions to be crowned champions.

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Hardik's captaincy as he spoke about his rise as captain in IPL 2022. Not many had expected the all-rounder to lead his team to their maiden title in their very first season, however, GT managed to pull off some miraculous wins under Hardik to go all the way in the tournament.

“Yes definitely. Not just my estimation, but everybody’s estimation (Hardik’s reputation as a leader has gone up). This was an aspect of his game which nobody had too much information about," Gavaskar said on Star Sports following GT's win over RR in the IPL 2022 final.

“We all knew what he could do with the bat, what he could do with the ball, but there was just a little bit of a concern before the start of the season about whether he would be able to bowl his full quota of 4 overs. He has done that, he has shown that. That all-rounder aspect is done, and everybody is happy. But this now, the way he has led the team, the way he has got them together, the way he has got them to gel together means he has got leadership qualities," he added.

Gavaskar also threw his weight behind Hardik as a potential contender to become India's next captain in the future. Currently, Rohit Sharma is in charge of the Indian team across formats and several players are being groomed to take up the role in the future. Gavaskar believes the leadership qualities shown by Hardik in IPL 2022 have opened the doors for him to be able to captain the Indian team one day.

“When you have leadership qualities, it automatically opens the door for honours at the national level to be able to captain the Indian national team in the near future. So that’s exciting, there are 3-4 other names in the ring. I am not saying he is the next in line. But for the selection committee to have that option is fantastic,” Gavaskar explained.

There were concerns over Hardik's bowling ahead of the start of the season as the all-rounder was making a comeback after a long break and had not bowled too much in the IPL or international cricket over the last couple of years. While he didn't bowl regularly, the GT skipper stepped up with the ball when his team needed him.

In the final against RR, he was the pick of the bowlers for GT with a three-wicket haul while conceding only 17 runs off his four overs. Hardik finished the season with 487 runs and 8 wickets in 15 matches for the Titans to help them win their maiden title in debut season.

Hardik Pandya for India captaincy? Sunil Gavaskar throws weight behind GT skipper after IPL 2022 triumph

Mumbai Indians (MI) had a shambolic campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as they were the first team to be knocked out from the race for the playoffs and finished at the bottom of the table with just eight points from 14 matches. The five-time champions went on to lose a record eight matches in a row at the start of the season and could never recover from the poor start as they eventually bowed out of the tournament.&nbsp;

However, putting the disappointing season behind MI star Suryakumar Yadav is already looking forward to the next season in 2023 and has set out the goals for himself and the franchise. Suryakumar, who is one of the key players in the Mumbai Indians squad, wants the team to bounce back and win their sixth title anyhow next season.

In a video shared by Mumbai Indians on social media, Suryakumar spoke about the franchise's goals for the next season and said they will have to add another trophy to their cabinet. "We've to lift the sixth (trophy) anyhow. It is unfortunate that this can't happen this year, fifth or sixth trophy, but next year, we have to add one more trophy anyhow," said Suryakumar.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is confident of his side's chances in the upcoming series against West Indies at home. The hosts will take on West Indies in a three-match ODI series which will be part of the World Cup 2023 qualifying round. It is all set to be a crucial series for the Men in Green, who will be hoping to continue their fine form after beating Australia 2-1 in the 3-match ODI series at home earlier this year.

Ahead of the start of the series, Babar reserved special praise for young batter Abdullah Shafique. While talking about his talent and skills, the Pakistan skipper went on to compare Shafique with the legendary Rahul Dravid and Kane Williamson. Dravid is regarded as one of the greatest batters of all time and was known for his splendid technique and grit.

Dravid, who is fondly called 'The Wall' by the cricket fans around the world, had a solid defensive game and used to frustrate the best of bowlers with his sublime batting. Williamson, on the other hand, is one of the most graceful batters in world cricket at present. Babar said there are shades of both Dravid and Williamson in Shafique's game.

Ahead of the team's departure next week, some of the members of the Australian team have raised concerns over travelling to the Island nation at such a time but will support the decision taken by the officials of Cricket Australia.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg revealed the players have raised ethical concerns but confirmed that the tour will go ahead as per schedule. Sri Lanka is currently battling one of its worst-ever economic crises with inflation soaring across the country and an acute shortage of resources like fuel and electricity.

The ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka has occurred majorly due to a severe shortage of foreign currency reserves. While COVID-19 impacted the tourism sector in the country, the reduction in exports also took a heavy toll on Sri Lanka's economy. Sri Lanka was under curfew earlier this month after protests in the country turned violent.

With the Sri Lankans battling such difficult conditions at present, some of the Australian players feel it won't augur well to tour the country in the current situation. At a time when there is a fuel shortage&nbsp;and regular power cuts, Australia are scheduled to play 3 T20Is against Sri Lanka under the lights in Colombo before moving to Pallekele for 5 ODIs and Galle for two Test matches.

However, Cricket Australia believes the tour can help Sri Lanka financially as the Aussies have not toured the country since 2016 and a full-fledged series can help in attracting big crowds to the stadiums. CA CEO Greenberg said Australian players are aware of the situation in Sri Lanka and there is a level of discomfort among them but they will follow the advice from CA.

“The players are very aware of the situation in Sri Lanka and it’s fair to say there is a level of discomfort around touring in conditions that contrast those faced by the people of Sri Lanka, such as rising food prices, power cuts and fuel rationing,” Greenberg told AAP.

“Ultimately our players want to continue to play cricket and will take direction, guidance and advice from CA about tour arrangements and planning," he added.

Australia's tour of Sri Lanka will begin on June 07 with the first T20I at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Australia have already announced string squads across all three formats for the series and it remains to be seen if the tour will go ahead smoothly amid the ongoing crisis in Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's struggles with the bat were quite evident in the recently-concluded league stage of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. While Rohit endured his worst ever season with the bat in IPL history as his team Mumbai Indians (MI) were knocked out of the tournament early, Kohli too hasn't managed to score runs consistently for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Their poor form with the willow is also a huge concern for the Indian team going forward.

However, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) president Sourav Ganguly is not losing his sweat over Kohli and Rohit's rough patch and has backed the duo to bounce back strongly. Kohli and Rohit have been two of India's best batters across formats and have been among the runs consistently over the years in international cricket.

While they were expected to deliver for the respective sides in the ongoing IPL 2022, both the superstars failed to make an impact. Rohit failed to score even a single half-century throughout the season as he finished with just 268 runs from 14 matches at a poor average of&nbsp;19.14 and a strike rate of over 120.

Kohli, on the other hand, has been dismissed on golden ducks as many as 3 times in 14 matches so far for RCB this season. The batting maestro has amassed only 309 runs at an average of 23.77 and a strike rate of just over 117. Kohli still has a few games in his hands to end the season on a high as RCB have made it to the playoffs.

"They are very good players. I'm sure they will be back among runs. They play so much of cricket that at times they go out of form. Kohli played very well in the last game, especially when it was required for RCB. That's why he (Kohli) was so happy that RCB qualified," Ganguly said at a promotional event speaking about Kohli and Rohit's rough patch.

"They are all great players, it's a matter of time they will be at their best," the BCCI president added.

Rohit's failure to provide them with good starts at the top resulted in Mumbai Indians' bowling out of the competition early this season. The five-time champions got off to a woeful start in their campaign as they lost as many as eight matches in a row before winning four out of their remaining six games.

Kohli's struggles were undermined at RCB due to the good form of skipper Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik, who has been phenomenal in the role of a finisher for the franchise this season. RCB will take on Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday (May 25).

UAE T20 League: India's ZEE group bags global media rights contract - Here's all you need to know

Punjab Kings ended their campaign on a winning note, crushing an already demoralised Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets in an inconsequential final IPL league match here on Sunday.

Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad managed only 157 for 8 on a good batting track.

But it was never going to be enough as Liam Livingstone made mincemeat of a hapless SRH attack, scoring 49 not out off 22 balls, and also hitting the coveted 1000th six of the tournament.

Shikhar Dhawan (39 off 32 balls) and Jitesh Sharma (19 off 7 balls) also contributed handsomely to the team's cause as the chase was completed in just 15.1 overs.

Punjab Kings, who haven't made the play-offs since their final appearance in 2014, finished sixth while the Sunrisers ended their high-spending IPL on eighth in the 10-team competition.

For Livingstone, it was all about smashing big sixes once again as he hit five in all, while Dhawan helped himself to two fours and two sixes.

It was Jonny Bairstow (23 off 15 balls), who straightaway attacked Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Washington Sundar, with a flurry of boundaries to set the tempo.

It helped Dhawan to play his accumulating game as Punjab maintained their philosophy of all out attack even as Sunrisers dropped some sitters on the field.

Worst was Washington Sundar's blooper when Livingstine tried to hit Jagadeesha Suchit against the turn and offered a dolly at point.

There were too many on-field bungles with Roamrio Shepherd's 15th over going for 23 runs.

Earlier, Punjab Kings bowlers showed a lot of discipline, restricting SRH to 157 for 8 in 20 overs.

Arshdeep Singh (0/25 in 4 overs) celebrated his maiden India call-up with another parsimonious spell but it was his state team colleague Harpreet Brar (3/26 in 4 overs), who was the pick of the bowlers with wickets of Priyam Garg, Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram.

With four qualifiers already decided on Saturday, there was little more than academic interest left in the game and the 'Orange Army' in fact looked jaded and more like going through the motions while batting before sprucing up their scores in the final few overs.

SRH's best batter of the season, Abhishek Sharma (43 off 32 balls) once again got a start but should have converted it into a big one which didn't happen.

A solemn looking Tripathi (20) did cross a personal milestone of 400 runs for the season but disappointment of not making it to the national team was writ large in his body language as he failed to connect the big hits.

Brar didn't do anything extraordinary and kept it mostly on the stumps, stifling the opposition batters for runs.

It was left to Romario Shepherd (26 not out off 15 balls) and Washington Sundar (25 off 19 balls) to take the Sunrisers past the 150-run mark, as both of them used the long handle to good effect in their 58-run sixth-wicket partnership off only 4.5 overs.

In fact, 50-plus runs came in the last four overs as Nathan Ellis (3/40 in 4 overs) erred in length despite a couple of back-to-back wickets that he got in the bargain.

Ellis did bowl a good hat-trick delivery which Bhuvneshwar Kumar averted only to get run-out of the very next delivery.

Venkatesh Iyer has opened up on comparisons with star all-rounder Hardik Panda ahead of Team India's T20I series against South Africa at home. While Iyer has managed to retain his spot in the squad, Pandya will be making his comeback to the Indian side after a long spell on the sidelines due to injury and recovery.

Pandya had opted for a break from all forms of cricket after his dismal show in the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE last year. The star all-rounder worked on his bowling and recovered fully from his back injury before returning as the captain of Gujarat Titans in the ongoing IPL 2022.

In Pandya's absence, Venkatesh Iyer was slotted into the Indian side as his replacement and featured in T20I series against the likes of New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies at home. He also impressed with the bat in the finisher's role and is all set to share the dressing room with Pandya for the first time in the T20Is against South Africa.

During Pandya's absence from international cricket, Iyer often earned comparisons with the star all-rounder owing to his heroics for the Indian team. He recently opened up on comparisons with Pandya and said the GT captain is way ahead of him and has won many matches for India already.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced Team India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home. India will take on South Africa in a five-match T20I series starting on June 09 after the conclusion of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

While senior players like Virat Kohli, captain Rohit Sharma and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah were rested from the T20I series, several youngsters also made the cut in the squad owing to their impressive performances in IPL 2022. Young pacers Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh were handed their maiden call ups for the T20I series.

Among the biggest talking points from the squad announcement was the return of Dinesh Karthik to the Indian squad after a gap of three years. Karthik last featured for India during the 2019 ODI World Cup in England and has managed to make his comeback to&nbsp;the team owing to his finishing exploits for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2022.

Besides Karthik, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya also made his comeback after a long layoff while the likes of Ishan Kishan and Venkatesh Iyer were selected despite average performances from the duo this season. The likes of Sanju Samson, Rahul Tripathi and Shikhar Dhawan were among the notable exclusions from the squad.

Former India batter Suresh Raina questioned Dhawan's absence from the squad despite the veteran batter's prolific run in the ongoing season. Dhawan finished as the highest run-getter for Punjab Kings this season amassing 460 runs in 14 games at an average of&nbsp;&nbsp;38.33 and a strike rate of over 122.

Raina believes Dhawan also deserved a spot in India's T20I squad if Karthik was picked after his performances this season. The former India batter said Dhawan must be sad over his non-selection as he has been scoring runs consistently for the last few seasons.

"Obviously, Shikhar would have been disappointed. Every captain wants a player like him in the team. He is fun loving person who brightens up the environment. And he has always scored runs - be it domestic, international or T20," Raina said on Star Sports.

"If you've brought Dinesh Karthik back in the team, Shikhar Dhawan deserved a place too. He has performed runs the last 3-4 years and has scored runs non-stop. Somewhere deep down, he must be sad," he added.

Dhawan had lost his opening slot to KL Rahul in both ODIs and T20Is before the emergence of the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan ensured he didn't get a chance to make his comeback in the team despite his purple patch in the IPL. Kishan, Rahul and Gaikwad are the three openers India have selected for the T20I series against South Africa.

Pakistan's former captain Salman Butt has landed himself in a new role after being roped in by the&nbsp;Singapore Cricket Association as&nbsp;a consulting head coach for the national side for the 2022 season.&nbsp;

Singapore, an affiliated country at ICC since 1974, will take part in the three major tournaments in a bid to finalise a berth among the ICC marquee tournaments in the next&nbsp;five months. Thus, the Singapore Cricket Association has appointed the ex-international cricketer Butt in the new role to hone the players' skills and help them in delivering at the big stage in what is going to be a very crucial few five months for them.

In this regard, the Singapore Cricket Association chief executive officer Saad Janjua also confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the 37-year-old Butt&nbsp;will be staying in Singapore and will travel with the team as head coach under a consultant contract.

For the unversed, it is an action-packed season for the Singapore team as&nbsp;it comprises&nbsp;three qualifiers during Butt's&nbsp;tenure - ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe in July, followed by the&nbsp;Asia Cup qualifier in August in Sri Lanka and the ICC Men's Challenge League A in Canada - i.e. a tournament&nbsp;to claim the ICC's ODI World Cup qualification.

Butt is a former Pakistan skipper, who represented the Men in Green in 33 Tests, 78 ODIs and 24 T20Is, ending with 11 tons. His career was cut short following his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal in 2010, which led to him being suspended for five years. Despite him being&nbsp;reintegrated into the system in Pakistan in January 2016, he never managed to play at the highest level any further, leading to him concluding his playing career in 2020.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer Umran Malik earned his dream maiden call up to the Indian team on Sunday (May 22) as the selectors announced India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home. Malik enjoyed an impressive campaign for SRH in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and has also been deemed one of the finds of the tournament.

The 21-year-old fast bowler has been consistently clocking over 150 kmph with the ball and has impressed with his raw pace. He was on the selectors' radar ahead of the squad announcement and has been rewarded for his bowling exploits in IPL 2022. Umran is among a host of players who have made the cut in India's squad on the back of their brilliant show in IPL this season.

While he has been fast-tracked into the Indian team for the South Africa ODI series, it remains to be seen if Umran will make the cut in India's playing XI for the first T20I against the Proteas directly. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri recently shared his views on the chances of Umran's inclusion straightway in India's playing XI.

Shastri believes going by his current form Umran deserves to be included in the playing XI for the series opener between India and South Africa which will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on June 09.&nbsp;

"On current form, they might just play (him). If he is bowling well in the nets, doing the right things, they will unleash him at the earliest against South Africa. His (Umran) association with the team is the absolute right thing because at least he can be groomed properly," Shastri said on ESPNCricinfo.

Umran made his IPL debut for SRH last season but did enough to impress the team management as he was retained ahead of the mega auction this year. He featured in all 14 matches for the franchise this season and finished the season as the highest wicket-taker for the Kane Williamson-led side with 22 wickets in 14 matches.

However, Umran's bowling heroics failed to inspire SRH to the playoffs as Williamson &amp; Co. could only manage 12 points in 14 matches in IPL 2022.

Mumbai Indians (MI) pacer Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the clash between the two sides in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday (May 21). Bumrah breathed fire with the ball as he went on to pick up a three-wicket haul to dismantle the DC batting line-up and achieve a staggering IPL feat.

Bumrah piled on the pressure on Delhi Capitals after Daniel Sams dismissed David Warner cheaply on just 5 off 6 balls to draw the first blood for his team. Bumrah got rid of in-form Mitchell Marsh on a golden duck before bagging the wickets of Prithvi Shaw and Rovman Powell to finish with excellent figures of 3/25 in his 4 overs.

With the help of Bumrah's heroics, MI managed to restrict DC to 159 runs and went on to thrash them by five wickets to knock them out of the tournament. Bumrah became the first Indian bowler in the history of IPL to take 15 wickets in as many as seven consecutive seasons.

No other Indian bowler has managed to achieve the feat since the inception of the tournament in 2008. Bumrah also surpassed Harbhajan Singh to become the second-highest wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians in IPL history. Bumrah now has 148 wickets for Mumbai Indians across competitions and is behind only Lasith Malinga, who scalped a staggering 195 wickets for the franchise.

Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by 5 wickets in their final league game of the season on Saturday (May 22) to end their disappointing season on a high and help Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) qualify for the playoffs. However, Rishabh Pant &amp; Co. went down fighting against MI as RCB finished at the 4th spot with 16 points from 14 matches. RCB players were seen cheering for Mumbai Indians throughout the crucial encounter on Saturday. MS Dhoni responded to a heartfelt letter from a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fan amid the franchise's horrific run in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Dhoni-led CSK are out of the race for playoffs already and have just one game remaining in the season. CSK were knocked out of the tournament after a disappointing five-wicket loss against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians last week.

One of the most successful franchises in the league, CSK had headed into the tournament as one of the favourites having lifted their fourth IPL title last season. However, it turned out to be a forgetful season for the defending champions, who witnesses a massive change ahead of the start of the season as star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was appointed as captain of the side.

While CSK were expected to get off to a good start, they ended up losing their first four games in a row under Jadeja before bagging their first win of the tournament against RCB. After leading CSK to only two wins in their first eight games, Jadeja decided to step down as captain and handed over the reins back to Dhoni.

While results did improve slightly under Dhoni, it was too late for a turnaround for CSK as they ended up becoming the second team after Mumbai Indians to bow out of the tournament. A fan wrote a heartfelt letter to Dhoni expressing his gratitude to the CSK captain and explaining how he always left him in awe with his leadership qualities.

Dhoni responded to the letter from the fan and wrote - "Well Written. Best Wishes". He also signed the letter which was shared by CSK on social media. "Words from the heart framed for life &amp; signed with love," CSK captioned the post.

"Words from the heart framed for life & signed with love," CSK captioned the post. Despite being 40, Dhoni has fired with the bat and has scored 206 runs at an average of over 34.

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has made a controversial claim regarding Ex-Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar's action. Famously known as the Rawalpindi Express, Akhtar is regarded as one of the fastest bowlers of all time and also holds the record for bowling the quickest delivery in international cricket.

During his peak, Akhtar was a nightmare for every batter with his brute pace. He used to trouble the best of batters with the ball and enjoyed some intense on-field duels with Sehwag, who got the better of Akhtar on several occasions. The former India opener recently claimed Akhtar used to chuck while bowling in international cricket.

Calling out Akhtar, Sehwag said the former Pakistan fast bowler was aware that he was chucking and that his action was not legal. The ex-India opener pointed out ICC's ban on Akhtar for his illegal action to further support his claim. It was in 1999 that Akhtar was banned by ICC for a month for chucking before returning with a remodelled action.

“Shoaib knows he used to jerk his elbow; he knew he was chucking too. Why would ICC ban him otherwise?” Sehwag said while speaking on Sports 18.&nbsp;

“Brett Lee’s hand came down straight, so it was easy to pick the ball. But with Shoaib, you could never guess where the hand and the ball will come from," he added.

While he called Akhtar his 'boundary bowler', Sehwag picked former Australian pacer Brett Lee as the easier one to face between him and the Rawalpindi Express. Sehwag said he could not trust Akhtar with what he would throw at him next after being struck for two boundaries on the previous deliveries.

“I never feared facing Brett Lee, but with Shoaib, I could not trust what he would do if I hit him twice to the fence. Maybe a beamer or a toe-crushing yorker,” explained Sehwag.

The Chetan Sharma-led selection panel is reportedly set to pick two separate squads for Team India as they gear up to face South Africa in a five-match T20I series at home followed by a full-fledged tour of England post the conclusion of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. India will play a one-off Test, 3 T20Is and as many ODIs against England.

Last year, India had selected two separate squads when the Test team toured England while Shikhar Dhawan led the T20I team in a series in Sri Lanka. As per a report in Cricbuzz, a similar situation is expected to arise this time around. The senior players are likely to be rested from the T20I series against South Africa and will leave for England for the one-off Test.

As per the report, the likes of captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah are likely to be rested from the T20I series against South Africa which gets underway from June 09 and will conclude on June 19. The senior players will leave for England on June 16.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who was dropped from the Indian Test side earlier this year, is expected to make his comeback to the squad after his brilliant performances for Sussex in county cricket in England. Meanwhile, the T20I squad against Sri Lanka will see a mix of youth and experience.

While the likes of Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are expected to feature, youngsters like Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Ruturaj Gaikwad and others might get a chance as well. The selectors are likely to announce both squads by the end of this week. As per the report, Dhawan might lead the Indian team against South Africa in the T20I series.

Ajinkya Rahane to miss England tour

Veteran batter Ajnkya Rahane was part of the Indian squad which had taken a 2-1 lead in the Test series against England last year before the final game was called off due to COVID-19. However, Rahane is unlikely to make the cut in the squad this time around for the 5th Test.

As per Cricbuzz, Rahane has suffered a Grade III hamstring injury and is set to miss the England tour. He was dropped from the Test squad along with Pujara and Wriddhiman Saha earlier this year but was expected to return. However, the injury has come as a huge setback for the right-hander.

Rahane suffered the injury while playing for his IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders in their last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 14. He got injured while batting and didn't come out to filed during the game. While Rahane's absence isn't a huge concern, picking two squads can be a challenging task for the selectors.

The selectors are likely to announce both squads by the end of this week. As per the report, Dhawan might lead the Indian team against South Africa in the T20I series. A clinical Rajasthan Royals inched closer to securing a play-offs berth with a convincing 24-run win over Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League here on Sunday.

Both RR and LSG are now tied on 16 points from 13 matches and need another win to confirm their place in the next stage of the tournament. Thanks to their margin of victory, RR also toppled LSG from the second place.

Batting first, Yashasvi Jaiswal top-scored with 41 while Devdutt Padikkal blazed away to an 18-ball 39, as Rajasthan Royals posted 178 for six. Skipper Sanju Samson made 32 off 24 balls.

Ravi Bishnoi was the most successful bowler for LSG, picking 2/31 in four overs.

When their turn to bat came, LSG were stopped at 154 for eight.

The Super Giants got off to a terrible start as Trent Boult (2/18) sent back two of their top batters -- Quinton de Kock (7) and Ayush Badoni (0) -- in successive deliveries in the beginning of the third over.

De Kock was caught at point by an agile Jimmy Neesham, while Badoni was trapped in front of the wicket, after which the batter opted for a review to clear his doubts.

Deepak Hooda (59 off 39 balls) denied Boult a hat-trick -- the ball headed towards the slip but after one bounce.

In the next delivery though, Hooda got off the mark with a beautiful drive through covers.
Following the New Zealand pacer's double blow, Prasidh Krishna (2/32) and Boult conceded only two runs in the next two overs, as RR kept things tight.

However, KL Rahul (10) struck Prasidh for a six to begin the final power play over but the bowler had the last laugh as he had the LSK skipper caught with his smart bowling.

LSG were in deep trouble at 29 for three in the sixth over when Krunal Pandya joined Hooda in the middle.

The two quickly added 65 runs for the fourth wicket to keep their team in the game, before Ravichandran Ashwin removed Pandya at a crucial juncture, thanks to some excellent work by Jos Buttler and Riyan Parag in the deep.

Meanwhile, Hooda brought up his fifty but Yuzvendra Chahal had the charging batter stumped after Sanju Samson nearly made a hash of it.

Obed McCoy (2/35) then picked up the wickets of Jason Holder and Dushmantha Chameera to take RR closer to victory.

Earlier, Jaiswal started the proceedings for Royals on a confident note, hitting successive fours off Mohsin Khan in the first over.

But the RR soon suffered a body blow when Avesh Khan knocked over the in-form Jos Buttler's (2) off-stump in the beginning of the third over as the batter tried to scoop it over fine leg.

Buttler's early dismissal brought skipper Sanju Samson into the middle and, looking to regain his touch, he straightaway got into the act, flicking Avesh past midwicket for a boundary at the Brabourne Stadium.

Samson then played a late cut against Mohsin and the ball flew over the slip cordon for a boundary. Then came a lovely cover drive from the blade of the RR captain as the team reached 25 for one in four overs.

Meanwhile, after getting an awkward boundary, Jaiswal got a life when Mohsin dropped him off the bowling of Avesh, failing to hold on to the ball despite getting both hands to it.

LSG paid heavily for the profligacy on Mohsin's part as Jaiswal made full use of the reprieve, accumulating 21 runs off Chameera to lift RR to 51 for one in the six power play overs.

He began the over with a four, found the fence two more times, and then finished it in style, carting the Sri Lankan pacer's short ball for a massive six over the midwicket region.

Even as Jaiswal went after the bowling, the usually flamboyant Samson seemed content playing second fiddle.

Samson, however, looked to cut loose against Ravi Bishnoi as he hit him for two fours before Jason Holder brought about the former's downfall in the next over with a slower ball outside off for Deepak Hooda to take a catch in the deep.

Devdutt Padikkal came and raced to 14 off 5 balls, with the help of two fours and a six against Marcus Stoinis.

Padikkal then scored two boundaries off Chameera as RR crossed 100 in the 11th over.

However, at the other end, Jaiswal was out caught and bowled by Ayush Badoni. But, unperturbed by the loss of the set Jaiswal, Padikkal continued to play his shots and got a six off Krunal Pandya.

Going for one too many though, Padikkal hold out in the deep.

Matthew Hayden recently recalled his fondest memories of his former Australian teammate Andrew Symonds, who passed away on Saturday (May 14) after a tragic car crash in Queensland, Australia. Symonds was driving his car when it got off the road and rolled over resulting in serious injuries to the former Aussie all-rounder.

Hayden, who shared the dressing room with Symonds for a number of years while playing for Australia, recalled a Test match between England and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) when he slammed a brilliant knock of 156 runs. Hayden revealed Symonds, who was often labelled as a white-ball specialist, always wanted to be a Test cricketer.

“My one beautiful memory of Symonds was when he leapt into my arms at the MCG because he always wanted to be known not just as a white-ball specialist but as a Test cricketer. To see him score those runs at the Boxing Day Test in front of 90,000 people," Hayden said while speaking on Star Sports.

"I've still got a crushing injury from when he landed on top of my head with his hands elated in the heaven. His mother, father, brother, sister so proudly recognised on that day what a special human being he was,” he added.

It was a sensational knock from Symonds with Hayden batting on the other hand during the MCG Test. Hayden also recalled a funny episode from the game and revealed how Kevin Pietersen got an epic response from Symonds after continuously trying to sledge him during his knock.

"He was batting at MCG and Kevin Pietersen was giving him a hard time from cover point. He took about 20 balls to get off strike and Symonds was just gutted because he desperately wanted to play Test cricket," Hayden said.

"Kevin continued after which Symonds said ‘Kevin, just because you have tough stickers on your arm doesn’t mean you're tough," he added.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer's recent revelations had sparked a massive debate on social media. In the post-match interview after KKR's win over Mumbai Indians (MI) earlier this month, Iyer revealed that KKR's CEO Venky Mysore is also involved in team selection at the franchise.

His comments soon went viral as fans and experts slammed the KKR team management for not letting the captain and coaches take control of the cricketing matters in the team. Many also felt the CEO's involvement in selection has played a role in KKR's poor show so far this season.

KKR have not enjoyed the best of campaigns in IPL 2022 as they currently lie at the sixth spot on the points table with six wins and seven losses in the tournament so far. The two-time champions have just one game remaining this season and have an outside chance of making it to the playoffs if they manage to win it.

Reacting to Iyer's revelations about KKR CEO's involvement in team selection, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt slammed KKR head coach Brendon McCullum calling his style of cricket 'senseless'. He also asserted that McCullum should treat the skipper with respect and not like a 'peon' who is there to follow all his commands.

"McCullum has some issues. He knows one way. He won't look at the pitch, the venue, what can we score, how much we need for a particular opposition. He just says play freely, score quickly. He starts senseless cricket in the garb of fearless cricket at times," Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"You need to give leverage to the team. When you make someone a captain, he is allowed to make mistakes. Captain is not your peon, who will follow all your commands," he added.

Butt recalled McCullum's stint with Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and revealed former New Zealand&nbsp;captain's tactics didn't work out for the franchise. Butt said McCullum insisted on playing attacking cricket irrespective of the team's situation which more often than not resulted in failure.

"Lahore gave a lot of chances to him but his method didn't work out. That kind of tactic can work on good pitches but it's not a remedy for all conditions. As a coach, you must plan for all conditions," he added.

'Captain is not your peon': Former Pakistan captain slams KKR head coach after Shreyas Iyer's revelations

Former Australia cricketer Andrew Symonds' tragic demise has left the entire cricket fraternity in shock. Regarded as one of the finest all-rounders to have played for Australia, Symonds passed away on Saturday (May 14) after a fatal car crash. The former cricketer died on the spot after his car went off the road and rolled over.

The tragic accident took place in the outskirts of the Townsville area in Queensland, Australia. While police have launched an investigation into the matter, details of the tragic accident have started to emerge. As per an eyewitness, Symonds was accompanied by his two pet dogs when the fateful accident took place.

Both the dogs managed to survive the car crash and one of them refused to leave his master's side even after his death. The witness revealed her partner tried to revive Symonds but the cricketer had no pulse.

“When we got there we could see a car upside down with a man in it. One of them (dog) was very sensitive and didn’t want to leave him. It would just growl at you every time we tried to move him or go near him,” the witness was quoted as saying by Australia’s Courier Mail.

“My partner tried to get (Symonds) out of the car, to put him on to his back. He was unconscious, not responsive, and had no pulse,” she added.
