Major League Cricket: Texas Super Kings beat Los Angeles Knight Riders by 69 runs in opener

Tom Dunmore, the vice president at Major Cricket League joins WION from Dallas to tell us more about Major League cricket.

Major Cricket League Vice President, Tom Dunmore in conversation with WION

Cricket is all set to hit a significant milestone this week with the launch of Major League Cricket in the US as Texas Super Kings face off against Los Angeles Knight Riders at America’s new premier venue in Dallas on Friday.

Major League Cricket begins in US

Even after England won the third Ashes Test, the debate around wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal in the second match refuses to die down. The English cricketer was dismissed by Alex Carey as he wandered out of his crease even before the ball was dead. The wicket of Bairstow sparked a controversy, igniting a debate on the spirit of the game and the rules of cricket. Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has now shared an anecdote about Bairstow’s contentious manner of dismissal. The number one Test bowler revealed that India cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid had an hour-long discussion with a bartender and a waiter on the English wicketkeeper’s controversial dismissal.

What did Rahul Dravid say?

"The other day, all of us were sitting on a beach, and Rahul bhai bought me a lemon juice. He had a one-hour discussion with the waiter and bartender on whether Jonny Bairstow was out or not. They spoke about everything, from the rules to the spirit of cricket in their discussion," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

IND vs WI Test Series: India vs West Indies full schedule, date, time, venue, teams, live streaming details

The custodians of the laws of Cricket the Melbourne Cricket Club feel that it's time for the global game to hit the reset button.

Creation of a fund to protect 'sanctity "of cricket: MCC

After their batting collapse in the first innings, Shafali Verma's three wickets in the last over turned the game in India's way, helping visitors clinch a thrilling 8-run victory over Bangladesh in the second T20I of the three-match series here at Shere Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday. India defend their lowest total against Bangladesh to clinch a thriller as Shafali Verma picked up three wickets and gave away just one run in the final over. Shafali and Deepti Sharma starred with the ball for India as they claimed three wickets respectively. It was Sultana Khatun (3-21) and Fahima Khatun (2-16) who was the star for Bangladesh and rattled India's batting order with stunning spells of bowling, restricting the visitors to 95/8 in 20 overs.

Defending a target of 96, India got off to a fine start in the second over Minnu Mani removed Shamima Sultana for 5. It did not take long for Deepti Sharma to show her fine spin bowling as she claimed the wicket of Shathi Rani in the third over of the game.
Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has criticised Rohit Sharama’s captaincy and said that he was expecting more from one of the two most successful captains of the Indian Premier League.
Speaking at The Indian Express Idea Exchange, the legendary batsman said, “I expected more from him (Rohit). In India, it is different, but when you do well overseas that is the test. That is where he has been a little disappointing. Even in the T20 format, with all the experience of the IPL.”

Gavaskar said that both Rohit Sharma and the Indian head coach Rahul Dravid should be taking more responsibility for the losses and why there was no change of tactics after continuous high-profile losses. He also talked about how current Indian batters are struggling with the same problems for a long time and asked questions about what the coaching staff was doing about it. He criticised Rohit’s comments about ‘lack of preparation time’ after the loss to Australia in the World Test Championship Finals 2023.

Ashes 2023 is turning out to be an exciting series for all cricket lovers. Australia are currently leading the series 2-0, but this hardly tells the story of how nail-biting and competitive the fixtures have been. When England and Australia faced each other on Day 1 of the third Ashes Test, a very peculiar incident happened that is now catching everyone’s attention. Before the toss, England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum was reportedly stopped by the security staff who failed to recognise him.

Brendon McCullum stopped by the security

As reported by The Times UK, Brendon McCullum was stopped by a security guard and was not permitted to enter the ground at Headingley, Leeds. The report said, “The security guard on duty did not recognise McCullum, who tried to argue while the person accompanying the New Zealander pointed out that it was fairly critical to the England team's chances that he was allowed through.”

The Third Ashes Test: A game of comebacks

If England want to keep their hopes alive of winning the series they will have to win this Test. The Ben Stokes-led side made 2 changes in their line-up. They brought in Mark Wood to replace James Anderson and Moeen Ali in place of an injured Ollie Pope. The changes seem to have worked as Wood took a five-for and helped dismiss Australia for 263 runs in the first innings.

On the other side, Australia brought in Mitchell Marsh, who made a return to the side after a long gap of nearly four years. Marsh had a dream comeback and carried Australia to a respectable score. The all-rounder scored a brilliant hundred. Later, he took the crucial wicket of English opener Zak Crawley.

The opening two Tests in Ashes 2023 have been riveting, to say the least. Pat Cummins-led Australia held their nerves in the series opener to win by two wickets before coming on top of Ben Stokes & Co. in the second encounter by 43 runs, in defence of 371, amid huge drama at Lord's. As Australia are one victory away from winning their first away Ashes series since 2001, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has a suggestion for Ben Stokes & Co.

Ponting pointed out how James Anderson, England's pace spearhead, has not looked his usual best. In the first two Tests, the 40-year-old only claimed three scalps and looked completely out of sorts. Meanwhile, Stuart Broad has picked 11 wickets whereas Ollie Robinson has ten scalps so far. Even Josh Tongue, who made his debut in the Lord's Test, also returned with 3 for 98 and 2 for 53 in the two innings. Thus, Ponting feels the veteran speedster can be dropped for the Leeds Test with the series on the line for Stokes & Co.

"From what I saw last week, I thought he was the standard of their fast bowlers," Ponting told Sanjana Ganesan on the latest episode of The ICC Review. He opined, "(Stuart) Broad got the wickets in the second innings, but Tongue got early breakthroughs."

'James Anderson looked like the most disappointing bowler for England so far'

The former Aussie skipper highlighted, "They were both very similar dismissals from around the wicket with the ball coming back in. I think that is something that they need to consider as well. He (Anderson) looked like the most disappointing bowler for England so far. What you expect from James Anderson is when he's got that new ball in his hand, he's taking early wickets, he's moving the ball, and he's not going for any runs. We haven't seen that in the series so far."

"And that's not a direct criticism of James Anderson. He's been one of the all-time greats of the game, his longevity and his wicket-taking ability, but if I was looking at the bowlers I saw last week, I think he's the one that's looked to have the least amount of penetration," Punter stated.

He added, "(Ollie) Robinson's had less penetration, but he's probably actually bowled a bit better. He's been in control of the game more than Anderson has. They've still got a few questions there with Moeen. Do they risk going into the game again and having the same (injury) happen?"

"I doubt that he would have bowled enough between the end of Edgbaston and the start of Headingley for them to be 100 per cent convinced that he's going to be physically right to bowl a lot of overs in a Test match. It could get down to the stage where they're bowling last at Headingley and they might need someone like him to bowl 25 or 30 overs in an innings, Ponting concluded."

A lot of drama unfolded on Day 5 of the second Ashes Test, at Lord's, between England and Australia after the visitors defeated Ben Stokes & Co. by 43 runs to go 2-0 up in the series. The final day commenced with England 114-4 but were soon reduced to 193 for 6 before skipper Stokes played a blinder (155) to keep England's hopes alive. His dismissal led to his side's surrender as the home side got dismissed for 327.

While Stokes' knock made heads turn, Jonny Bairstow's dismissal also became a huge talking point. 'When did I....': Ben Stokes hits back at Australian newspaper for 'crybabies' remark after Lord's Test drama

On Sunday (July 02), Ben Stokes kept on fighting for England and produced a masterclass on Day 5 of the second Ashes Test, at Lord's, in his side's chase of 371 versus Australia. He, however, could not take them past the finish line after falling for 155. Coming out to bat at 45 for 4, the England Test captain stitched an impressive 132-run fifth-wicket stand with opener Ben Duckett (83) and an entertaining 108-run seventh-wicket partnership with Stuart Broad before England fell for 327 to lose by 43 runs.

Stokes played a composed knock till he saw Jonny Bairstow (10) get out in a bizarre fashion, who was caught wandering outside the crease after ducking a slower bouncer from Cameron Green only to be stumped by Alex Carey, as he accelerated with England reeling at 193/6. However, his fall led to England's surrender as hosts now trail 0-2 in the five-match series versus Pat Cummins & Co. While Day 5 was all about Stokes, Bairstow's dismissal also led to a lot of drama.

While Broad sledged Carey for stumping out Bairstow, the Aussie players were also taunted by some of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) members in the iconic Long Room of the Lord's Stadium. Usman Khawaja, after the game, slammed the members' behaviour and was hurt by their comments. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has now joined in and reacted to the whole incident on his Youtube channel.

'If you are seeing this at the home of cricket, then it is a bit of a problem'

Chopra said, "There was almost a scuffle-like situation in the Lord's Long Room. What does this mean and where does it go from here? It is a big question because if you are seeing this at the home of cricket, then it is a bit of a problem. It seemed like a fish market."

'They have been people with civilised behaviour but one decision made them go up in arms'

Chopra further stated, "These are the traditions at Lord's, the Mecca of cricket, where players go through the members in the Long Room. There have been people with civilized behaviour until now, they clap as well and are happy too, that's what England's culture has been so far but this one decision has made them go up in arms."

Seemed like a fish market: Ex-India opener reacts to Long Room verbal spat on Day 5 of Lord's Test

KL Rahul has been out of the Indian Cricket squad with a thigh injury which he suffered in a game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore during the last season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 31-year-old is right now undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. According to media reports, Rahul is expected to start his training soon. Former Indian cricketer Laxman Sivaramakrishnan has now shared his opinion on Rahul’s comeback. “He should be made to play domestic cricket to assess his match fitness and batting form. Getting back into the Indian team should not be so easy, you bat in the nets and ready for international competition,” the legendary India spinner tweeted.

Lucknow Super Giants had to suffer due to KL Rahul’s injury during the last season of the IPL. Lucknow reached the playoffs having finished their league stage campaign at the third spot. He succeeded in claiming two half-centuries last season. The former India vice-captain has been going through a rough patch in recent times and has not been able to perform consistently at the highest level.

Sachin Tendulkar’s latest post was, quite understandably, loved by fans and it has so far garnered more than 600k likes on Instagram. Reacting to the photos, one Instagram user wrote, “The crowd around is not even aware that two of the best batsmen of the cricket world are present in their midst.”

Interestingly, both Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara are crazy about playing golf. The two legendary cricketers take part in a game of golf whenever they get a chance. Tendulkar also met South African professional golfer Gary Player in Kenya earlier this month. Tendulkar shared a footage in which he can also be seen playing golf. “It was a pleasure to meet and chat with Gary Player, one of the greatest golfers to have played the sport. Since we were playing around the same time, I also had the opportunity to receive some valuable tips from him,” the World Cup-winning cricketer wrote in the caption.

Pakistan Cricket Board awaits government's approval for 2023 ICC men's ODI International World Cup

The International Cricket Council World Cup schedule is out with over three months to go for the marquee event. This is after plenty of speculation and the big news is that Pakistan is travelling to India for this event. The highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan will take place on October 15, 2023.

ICC World Cup 2023: India and Pakistan set for epic showdown

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are involved in a big tussle in recent times over the implementation of the Hybrid Model for the Asia Cup and the World Cup. While the model will be in use for the Asia Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the BCCI have opposed the idea in the World Cup. With present and future tournaments in Pakistan facing an uncertain threshold, the two boards are likely to continue their battle for staging big tournaments.

Team India named squads for the two-match Test series and the three-match ODI series against West Indies earlier this week. While new faces like Yashaswi Jaiswal, Mukesh Kumar and Ruturaj Gaikwad featured in the Test squad, in-form batter Sarfaraz Khan failed to seal his spot in the team. Despite being in fine touch, Sarfaraz’s omission from the India Test squad baffled many ex-cricketers and experts. Former India batter Aakash Chopra has now voiced his opinion on this matter. Rooting for the Mumbai-born, Chopra vehemently criticised the decision to not include Sarfaraz in the Test team.

What Aakash Chopra said

“What should Sarfaraz Khan do? If you look at his numbers in the past three years, he's head and shoulders above the rest. He's scored everywhere. Even then, if he's not selected... what message does it send? This is a question worth asking. If there's some other reason, something which you and I don't know, make it public. I don't know if someone told Sarfaraz about that,” Aakash Chopra said on his official YouTube channel.

Ben Stokes-led England have entertained one and all with their playing style in the first Test of Ashes 2023 in Edgbaston, Birmingham. After setting a challenging 282-run target for Australia on Day 4, England ended the day's proceedings with the visitors being 107 for 3, needing another 174 runs for a win. Smart cricket: AB de Villiers in awe of England's Day 1 declaration in Edgbaston Test

There's a thriller brewing in Edgbaston, 18 years after that jaw-dropping 2005 Ashes Test. Australia are chasing 174 runs for the win on final day in 2023 and England look to take seven wickets before that happens. Aussie openers made a solid start in chase of 281 before Stuart Broad rocked them with two quick wickets. Broad's twin strikes cracked the game wide open for England who were dismissed for 273 in their second innings.

Australia opener David Warner, meanwhile, has said that his team won't go into shell. He's also confident of Australia going long in the game if they are patient enough.

“For us it’s about going out there and playing the way that you play. You can’t go into your shell. The positive thing is the wicket isn’t going up and down as much as you’d think from a deteriorating wicket, probably on the lower side. If we keep being patient and we keep looking to score, we’ll go a long way in this game,” said Warner in a conversation with SEN cricket.

There, however, are chances of rain on day 5 but Warner looks unperturbed by that as he 'can't control that.'

“There’s going to be a bit of weather around but we can’t control that. If it rains and rains heavy, I think it will burn off and that’s what the predictions are," added the Aussie opener.

Speaking on the the affect rain could have on the batting, Warner said, "You’ve got to just keep that out of your mind and play as the ball comes at you, respect each delivery and then look to score.”

Final day equation

England, playing the Bazball way, went hard after Australia in the second innings as well. The hosts, however, kept losing wickets at regular interval and eventually folded out for 273. A seven-run lead in the first innings meant that Australia required 281 for a win.

The visiting openers looked good as they added 61 for the first wicket before Ollie Robinson got Warner (36) out caught behind. Veteran English pacer Broad then got his tail up as he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne (13) and Steve Smith (6) in space of 11 runs.

Night watchman Scott Boland (13 not out), however, stood strong with first innings hero Usman Khawaja (34 not out) to take Australia back without further damage. Australia finished the day with 107 run on board and seven wickets in hand, setting up a exciting final day in Birmingham.

Ashes 2023: David Warner confident of Australia 'going long way' on final day sans rain interruption

The opening Test of Ashes 2023 has lived up to expectations. After England opted to bat first, they rode on Joe Root's 118 not out to declare at 393 for 8. In reply, Australia made 386 all-out courtesy of Usman Khawaja's 141 as Ben Stokes & Co. ended Day 3 at 28 for 2, with a lead of 35 runs. Day 4 turned out to be another exciting contest between bat and ball with the hosts restricting Australia to 107 for 3 in pursuit of 282. The penultimate day's play also saw the English fans target Steve Smith once again.

Ever since Smith returned to international cricket post the infamous sandpaper gate fiasco, which took place during his captaincy tenure in Australia's tour of South Africa in early 2018, the English fans have given him a hard time. They mocked him during the 2019 ODI World Cup, Ashes 2019 and the Edgbaston fans sledged him during Day 4's proceedings on Monday (June 19).

In a video that has gone viral on social media platforms, home fans chanted 'Saw you cry on the telly' for Smith, reminding him of his press conference where he accepted his involvement in the sandpaper gate saga in 2018. Smith, however, didn't react much to the taunts. Here's the video -

Here's the video - English Crowd Mocking Steven Smith: We Saw You Crying on the Telly.
Millions of flightless crickets swarming their towns have left residents of a US state in a state of panic. Since early June, parts of Nevada have experienced an onslaught of Mormon crickets, which can grow up to 5cm in length.

India locked horns with Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final and lost by 209 runs at The Oval, London earlier this month. With another failure in an ICC event, India's trophyless run continues in mega tournaments since 2013. Ever since Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli, he was expected to take the national side to some big wins in ICC events. But India have failed twice under his leadership. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, India were hammered by eventual winners England by ten wickets and now lost to Australia in the WTC finale.

India's ICC title drought continues since 2013 when they won the ICC Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni. Thus, a lot of questions are now being raised about Rohit's captaincy. He has a herculean task ahead as Hitman not only needs to win the next ICC tournament, i.e. the 2023 ODI World Cup at home later this year but find an able successor for a smooth transition. While many are calling for his removal as captain, especially in whites, former Australian skipper Michael Clarke has backed him.

'I think he is a very good captain. I like his aggressive approach'

Speaking to RevSportz after India's WTC final loss, Clarke stated, "I would be keeping the faith with Rohit. I think he is a very good captain. I like his aggressive approach, he looks to be as positive as he can be. He has had a lot of success as a leader. Look at his IPL record for Mumbai (Indians). Just because India didn’t win the Test World Championship doesn’t mean Rohit is not the right guy to lead India. The fact that India qualified again, they are the only team to make consecutive finals, says a lot about how they have played their Test cricket over the past four years. It is also a very important time for stability with the One-Day World Cup right around the corner."

To do so in Test cricket is commendable and I would urge you to look at that as well before making any kind of judgment call."

Team India have a lot on their plate going forward. 'Just because they didn’t win WTC final...': Former Aussie skipper backs Rohit Sharma to remain India captain

England batters found themselves in a precarious situation on the third day of the opening Ashes Test. Australia secured a seven-run lead on Sunday after they were bowled out for 386. Relentless rain on day three of the Test offered pacers some assistance and Aussie bowlers made full use of the conditions at Edgbaston. The hosts lost their opening batters - Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett - in the final session of the day’s play. When asked about how difficult it was to bat in such challenging conditions, former England skipper Nasser Hussain came up with a hilarious reply on-air. Ex-England batter Kevin Pietersen had asked Hussain, “Horrible time to bat Naz?" Hussain did not wait much before responding, “Absolutely, I'm not worried about Bazball. Nazball is walking out there very slowly at the moment. Making sure I take my guard wrong. Delay as much as possible."

Aussie pacers dominate

Australia skipper Pat Cummins and fast bowler Scott picked up one wicket each to gain an upper hand for their side in the opening Ashes Test. Consistent rain in Birmingham enforced interruptions on the third day of the game. The proceedings had to be stopped right before the final ball of the seventh over during England’s second innings. Action did start again after one hour but only 3.4 overs could be bowled following the resumption.

Ben Duckett was the first to depart in the second innings after skipper Cummins dismissed the southpaw in the ninth over. Cameron Green, standing at gully, took a fabulous catch to send Duckett back to the dressing room for just 19. Crawley was the second batter to be dismissed in the very next over. Ollie Pope and Joe Root remained in the crease at stumps as England currently trail by 35 runs.

Khawaja’s century

Earlier, Australia ended their first innings at 386. Usman Khawaja scored a magnificent century to help his side in earning a valuable first-innings lead. The left-hander displayed resilient batting to achieve his first Test hundred on England soil. He breached the three-digit mark in 199 deliveries. Two English pacers - Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson - scalped three wickets each in the first innings.

The England cricket team are aiming to win their first Ashes series since 2015. A lot has already been said about the Bazball - a new attacking style of playing the game under Ben Stokes and Brendon Brendon McCullum - and only time will tell whether the brand-new method will guide the English cricketers to Ashes glory this time.
